The Triumphal Entry

21 ^(A)Now when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to ^(B)the Mount of Olives, then Jesus ^(C)sent two disciples, ² saying to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me. ³ If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them at once.” ⁴ This took place ^(D)to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying,

⁶ The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them. ⁷ They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them. ⁸ Most of the crowd ^(G)spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. ⁹ And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, ^(H)“Hosanna to ^(I)the Son of David! ^(J)Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna ^(K)in the highest!”

¹⁹ Besides, while he was sitting on ^(A)the judgment seat, his wife sent word to him, “Have nothing to do with ^(B)that righteous man, for I have suffered much because of him today ^(C)in a dream.” ²⁰ Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ^(D)ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. ²¹ The governor again said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas.” ²² Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” ^(E)They all said, “Let him be crucified!” ²³ And he said, “Why? ^(F)What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Let him be crucified!”

Pilate Delivers Jesus to Be Crucified

²⁴ So when Pilate saw that he was gaining nothing, but rather that ^(G)a riot was beginning, he took water and ^(H)washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of ^(I)this man's blood;^{[a] (J)}see to it yourselves.” ²⁵ And all the people answered, ^(K)“His blood be on us and ^(L)on our children!” ²⁶ Then he released for them Barabbas, and having ^(M)scourged^[b] Jesus, delivered him to be crucified.

^33 (A)And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, ^(B)one on his right and one on his left. ³⁴ And Jesus said, “Father, ^(C)forgive them, ^(D)for they know not what they do.”^[a] And they cast lots ^(E)to divide his garments. ³⁵ And ^(F)the people stood by, watching, ^(G)but ^(H)the rulers ^(I)scoffed at him, saying, ^(J)“He saved others; ^(K)let him save himself, ^(L)if he is ^(M)the Christ of God, ^(N)his Chosen One!” ³⁶ The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and ^(O)offering him sour wine ³⁷ and saying, ^(P)“If you are ^(Q)the King of the Jews, save yourself!” ^38 (R)There was also an inscription over him,^[b] “This is ^(S)the King of the Jews.”

The Death of Jesus

^44 (A)It was now about the sixth hour,^[a] and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour,^{[b] 45} while the sun's light failed. And ^(B)the curtain of the temple was torn in two. ⁴⁶ Then Jesus, ^(C)calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, ^(D)into your hands I ^(E)commit my spirit!” And having said this ^(F)he breathed his last.

Jesus Is Buried

^57 (A)When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also was a disciple of Jesus. ⁵⁸ He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. ⁵⁹ And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud ⁶⁰ and ^(B)laid it in his own new tomb, ^(C)which he had cut in the rock. And he rolled ^(D)a great stone to the entrance of the tomb and went away. ⁶¹ Mary Magdalene and ^(E)the other Mary were there, sitting opposite the tomb.

The Guard at the Tomb

⁶² The next day, that is, after the day of ^(F)Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate ⁶³ and said, “Sir, we remember how ^(G)that impostor said, while he was still alive, ^(H)‘After three days I will rise.’ ⁶⁴ Therefore order the tomb to be made secure until the third day, ^(I)lest his disciples go and steal him away and tell the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last fraud will be worse than the first.” ⁶⁵ Pilate said to them, “You have ^(J)a guard^[a] of soldiers. Go, make it as secure as you can.” ⁶⁶ So they went and made the tomb secure by ^(K)sealing the stone and setting a guard.

The Resurrection

28 ^(L)Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and ^(M)the other Mary went to see the tomb. ² And behold, there was a great earthquake, for ^(N)an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. ^3 (O)His appearance was like lightning, and ^(P)his clothing white as snow. ⁴ And for fear of him the guards trembled and ^(Q)became like dead men. ⁵ But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. ⁶ He is not here, for he has risen, ^(R)as he said. Come, see the place where he^[b] lay. ⁷ Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, ^(S)he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.” ⁸ So they departed quickly from the tomb ^(T)with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples.
