19 calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to the Lord, saying, “Are you the one (A)who is to come, or (B)shall we look for another?” 20 And when the men had come to him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, ‘Are you the one (C)who is to come, or (D)shall we look for another?’” 21 In that hour (E)he healed many people of diseases and plagues and evil spirits, and (F)on many who were blind he bestowed sight. 22 And he answered them, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: (G)the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, (H)lepers[a] are cleansed, and (I)the deaf hear, (J)the dead are raised up, (K)the poor have good news preached to them. 23 And blessed is the one who is (L)not offended by me.”

24 When John's messengers had gone, Jesus[b] began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out (M)into the wilderness to see? (N)A reed shaken by the wind? 25 What then did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who are dressed in splendid clothing and live in luxury are in kings' courts. 26 What then did you go out to see? (O)A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 27 This is he of whom it is written,

(P)“‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face,

28 I tell you, among those born of women none is greater than John. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” 29 ((Q)When all the people heard this, and (R)the tax collectors too, they declared God just,[c] (S)having been baptized with (T)the baptism of John, 30 (U)but the Pharisees and (V)the lawyers (W)rejected (X)the purpose of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.)

19 he sent them to the Lord to ask, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”

20 When the men came to Jesus, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to you to ask, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?’”

21 At that very time Jesus cured many who had diseases, sicknesses(A) and evil spirits, and gave sight to many who were blind. 22 So he replied to the messengers, “Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy[a] are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.(B) 23 Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”

24 After John’s messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 25 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear expensive clothes and indulge in luxury are in palaces. 26 But what did you go out to see? A prophet?(C) Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 27 This is the one about whom it is written:

“‘I will send my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way before you.’[b](D)

28 I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God(E) is greater than he.”

29 (All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus’ words, acknowledged that God’s way was right, because they had been baptized by John.(F) 30 But the Pharisees and the experts in the law(G) rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.)

19 And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?

20 When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?

21 And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight.

22 Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.

23 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.

24 And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind?

25 But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings' courts.

26 But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet.

27 This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.

28 For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.

29 And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.

30 But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.

He said therefore to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, (A)“You brood of (B)vipers! Who warned you to flee from (C)the wrath to come? Bear fruits (D)in keeping with repentance. Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. (G)Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”

Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

11 And he answered them, (A)“Whoever has two tunics[a] is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise.” 12 (B)Tax collectors also came to be baptized and said to him, “Teacher, (C)what shall we do?” 13 And he said to them, (D)“Collect no more than you are authorized to do.” 14 Soldiers also asked him, “And we, (E)what shall we do?” And he said to them, (F)“Do not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusation, and be content with your (G)wages.”

15 As the people were in expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, (H)whether he might be (I)the Christ, 16 (J)John answered them all, saying, “I baptize you with water, but (K)he who is mightier than I is coming, (L)the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you (M)with the Holy Spirit and (N)fire. 17 His (O)winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to (P)gather the wheat into his barn, (Q)but the chaff he will burn with (R)unquenchable fire.”

18 So (S)with many other exhortations he preached good news to the people. 19 But (T)Herod the tetrarch, who had been reproved by him for Herodias, his brother's wife, and for all the evil things that Herod had done, 20 added this to them all, that (U)he locked up John in prison.

21 Now when all the people were baptized, and when (V)Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, (W)the heavens were opened, 22 and (X)the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove; and (Y)a voice came from heaven, (Z)“You are my beloved Son;[b] with you I am well pleased.”[c]

12 Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?

13 And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.

14 And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.

15 And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not;

16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:

17 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.

18 And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.

19 But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done,

20 Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.

21 Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,

22 And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.
