Jesus Drives Out an Impure Spirit(A)

31 Then he went down to Capernaum,(B) a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people. 32 They were amazed at his teaching,(C) because his words had authority.(D)

33 In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice, 34 “Go away! What do you want with us,(E) Jesus of Nazareth?(F) Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are(G)—the Holy One of God!”(H)

35 “Be quiet!” Jesus said sternly.(I) “Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.

36 All the people were amazed(J) and said to each other, “What words these are! With authority(K) and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!” 37 And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area.(L)

Jesus Heals Many(M)(N)

38 Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her. 39 So he bent over her and rebuked(O) the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.

40 At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one,(P) he healed them.(Q) 41 Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!”(R) But he rebuked(S) them and would not allow them to speak,(T) because they knew he was the Messiah.

42 At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them. 43 But he said, “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God(U) to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.” 44 And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.(V)

14 I cannot carry all these people by myself; the burden is too heavy for me.(A) 15 If this is how you are going to treat me, please go ahead and kill me(B)—if I have found favor in your eyes—and do not let me face my own ruin.”

16 The Lord said to Moses: “Bring me seventy of Israel’s elders(C) who are known to you as leaders and officials among the people.(D) Have them come to the tent of meeting,(E) that they may stand there with you. 17 I will come down and speak with you(F) there, and I will take some of the power of the Spirit that is on you and put it on them.(G) They will share the burden of the people with you so that you will not have to carry it alone.(H)

18 “Tell the people: ‘Consecrate yourselves(I) in preparation for tomorrow, when you will eat meat. The Lord heard you when you wailed,(J) “If only we had meat to eat! We were better off in Egypt!”(K) Now the Lord will give you meat,(L) and you will eat it. 19 You will not eat it for just one day, or two days, or five, ten or twenty days, 20 but for a whole month—until it comes out of your nostrils and you loathe it(M)—because you have rejected the Lord,(N) who is among you, and have wailed before him, saying, “Why did we ever leave Egypt?”’”(O)

21 But Moses said, “Here I am among six hundred thousand men(P) on foot, and you say, ‘I will give them meat to eat for a whole month!’ 22 Would they have enough if flocks and herds were slaughtered for them? Would they have enough if all the fish in the sea were caught for them?”(Q)

23 The Lord answered Moses, “Is the Lord’s arm too short?(R) Now you will see whether or not what I say will come true for you.(S)

24 So Moses went out and told the people what the Lord had said. He brought together seventy of their elders and had them stand around the tent. 25 Then the Lord came down in the cloud(T) and spoke with him,(U) and he took some of the power of the Spirit(V) that was on him and put it on the seventy elders.(W) When the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied(X)—but did not do so again.

On the first day of every week,(A) each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with your income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made.(B) Then, when I arrive, I will give letters of introduction to the men you approve(C) and send them with your gift to Jerusalem. If it seems advisable for me to go also, they will accompany me.

Personal Requests

After I go through Macedonia, I will come to you(D)—for I will be going through Macedonia.(E) Perhaps I will stay with you for a while, or even spend the winter, so that you can help me on my journey,(F) wherever I go.
