The Parable of the Dishonest Manager
16 Now he said to the disciples, “There was a rich(A) man who received an accusation that his manager(B) was squandering(C) his possessions. 2 So he called the manager in and asked, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your management,(D) because you can no longer be my manager.’
3 “Then the manager said to himself, ‘What will I do since my master is taking the management away from me? I’m not strong enough to dig; I’m ashamed to beg. 4 I know what I’ll do so that when I’m removed from management, people will welcome me into their homes.’
5 “So he summoned each one of his master’s debtors. ‘How much do you owe my master?’ he asked the first one.
6 “‘A hundred measures of olive oil,’ he said.
“‘Take your invoice,’ he told him, ‘sit down quickly, and write fifty.’
7 “Next he asked another, ‘How much do you owe?’
“‘A hundred measures of wheat,’ he said.
“‘Take your invoice,’ he told him, ‘and write eighty.’
8 “The master praised the unrighteous manager(E) because he had acted shrewdly. For the children of this age(F) are more shrewd than the children of light(G) in dealing with their own people.[a] 9 And I tell you, make friends(H) for yourselves by means of worldly wealth[b](I) so that when it fails, they may welcome you into eternal dwellings. 10 Whoever is faithful(J) in very little(K) is also faithful in much, and whoever is unrighteous in very little is also unrighteous in much. 11 So if you have not been faithful with worldly wealth, who will trust you with what is genuine? 12 And if you have not been faithful with what belongs to someone else, who will give you what is your own? 13 No(L) servant can serve two masters, since either he will hate(M) one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”
Kingdom Values
14 The Pharisees, who were lovers of money,(N) were listening to all these things and scoffing(O) at him. 15 And he told them, “You are the ones who justify(P) yourselves in the sight of others, but God knows your hearts.(Q) For what is highly admired by people is revolting(R) in God’s sight.
16 “The(S) Law and the Prophets(T) were until John; since then, the good news of the kingdom of God(U) has been proclaimed, and everyone is urgently invited to enter it.[c] 17 But it is easier(V) for heaven and earth to pass away than for one stroke of a letter in the law to drop out.
18 “Everyone(W) who divorces(X) his wife and marries another woman commits adultery,(Y) and everyone who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery.
The Rich Man and Lazarus
19 “There was a rich man who would dress in purple and fine linen,(Z) feasting lavishly every day. 20 But a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, was lying at his gate.(AA) 21 He longed to be filled(AB) with what fell from the rich man’s table,(AC) but instead the dogs(AD) would come and lick his sores. 22 One day the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s side.[d](AE) The rich man also died and was buried. 23 And being in torment(AF) in Hades,(AG) he looked up and saw Abraham a long way off, with Lazarus at his side. 24 ‘Father Abraham!’(AH) he called out, ‘Have mercy on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony(AI) in this flame!’
25 “‘Son,’[e] Abraham said, ‘remember that during your life you received your good things,(AJ) just as Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here,(AK) while you are in agony. 26 Besides all this, a great chasm has been fixed between us and you, so that those who want to pass over from here to you cannot; neither can those from there cross over to us.’
27 “‘Father,’ he said, ‘then I beg you to send him to my father’s house— 28 because I have five brothers—to warn(AL) them, so that they won’t also come to this place of torment.’
29 “But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the prophets;(AM) they should listen to them.’
30 “‘No, father Abraham,’ he said. ‘But if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’
31 “But he told him, ‘If they don’t listen to Moses and the prophets, they will not be persuaded if someone rises from the dead.’”(AN)

L'amministratore fedele
16 Diceva anche ai discepoli: «C'era un uomo ricco che aveva un amministratore, e questi fu accusato dinanzi a lui di sperperare i suoi averi. 2 Lo chiamò e gli disse: Che è questo che sento dire di te? Rendi conto della tua amministrazione, perché non puoi più essere amministratore. 3 L'amministratore disse tra sé: Che farò ora che il mio padrone mi toglie l'amministrazione? Zappare, non ho forza, mendicare, mi vergogno. 4 So io che cosa fare perché, quando sarò stato allontanato dall'amministrazione, ci sia qualcuno che mi accolga in casa sua. 5 Chiamò uno per uno i debitori del padrone e disse al primo: 6 Tu quanto devi al mio padrone? Quello rispose: Cento barili d'olio. Gli disse: Prendi la tua ricevuta, siediti e scrivi subito cinquanta. 7 Poi disse a un altro: Tu quanto devi? Rispose: Cento misure di grano. Gli disse: Prendi la tua ricevuta e scrivi ottanta. 8 Il padrone lodò quell'amministratore disonesto, perché aveva agito con scaltrezza. I figli di questo mondo, infatti, verso i loro pari sono più scaltri dei figli della luce.
Il buon uso del denaro
9 Ebbene, io vi dico: Procuratevi amici con la disonesta ricchezza, perché, quand'essa verrà a mancare, vi accolgano nelle dimore eterne.
10 Chi è fedele nel poco, è fedele anche nel molto; e chi è disonesto nel poco, è disonesto anche nel molto.
11 Se dunque non siete stati fedeli nella disonesta ricchezza, chi vi affiderà quella vera? 12 E se non siete stati fedeli nella ricchezza altrui, chi vi darà la vostra?
13 Nessun servo può servire a due padroni: o odierà l'uno e amerà l'altro oppure si affezionerà all'uno e disprezzerà l'altro. Non potete servire a Dio e a mammona».
Contro i farisei, amici del denaro
14 I farisei, che erano attaccati al denaro, ascoltavano tutte queste cose e si beffavano di lui. 15 Egli disse: «Voi vi ritenete giusti davanti agli uomini, ma Dio conosce i vostri cuori: ciò che è esaltato fra gli uomini è cosa detestabile davanti a Dio.
All'assalto del regno
16 La Legge e i Profeti fino a Giovanni; da allora in poi viene annunziato il regno di Dio e ognuno si sforza per entrarvi.
Perennità della Legge
17 E' più facile che abbiano fine il cielo e la terra, anziché cada un solo trattino della Legge.
Indissolubilità del matrimonio
18 Chiunque ripudia la propria moglie e ne sposa un'altra, commette adulterio; chi sposa una donna ripudiata dal marito, commette adulterio.
Il ricco cattivo e il povero Lazzaro
19 C'era un uomo ricco, che vestiva di porpora e di bisso e tutti i giorni banchettava lautamente. 20 Un mendicante, di nome Lazzaro, giaceva alla sua porta, coperto di piaghe, 21 bramoso di sfamarsi di quello che cadeva dalla mensa del ricco. Perfino i cani venivano a leccare le sue piaghe. 22 Un giorno il povero morì e fu portato dagli angeli nel seno di Abramo. Morì anche il ricco e fu sepolto. 23 Stando nell'inferno tra i tormenti, levò gli occhi e vide di lontano Abramo e Lazzaro accanto a lui. 24 Allora gridando disse: Padre Abramo, abbi pietà di me e manda Lazzaro a intingere nell'acqua la punta del dito e bagnarmi la lingua, perché questa fiamma mi tortura. 25 Ma Abramo rispose: Figlio, ricordati che hai ricevuto i tuoi beni durante la vita e Lazzaro parimenti i suoi mali; ora invece lui è consolato e tu sei in mezzo ai tormenti. 26 Per di più, tra noi e voi è stabilito un grande abisso: coloro che di qui vogliono passare da voi non possono, né di costì si può attraversare fino a noi. 27 E quegli replicò: Allora, padre, ti prego di mandarlo a casa di mio padre, 28 perché ho cinque fratelli. Li ammonisca, perché non vengano anch'essi in questo luogo di tormento. 29 Ma Abramo rispose: Hanno Mosè e i Profeti; ascoltino loro. 30 E lui: No, padre Abramo, ma se qualcuno dai morti andrà da loro, si ravvederanno. 31 Abramo rispose: Se non ascoltano Mosè e i Profeti, neanche se uno risuscitasse dai morti saranno persuasi».

Parábola del administrador astuto
16 Jesús contó otra parábola a sus discípulos: «Un hombre rico tenía un administrador a quien acusaron de derrochar sus bienes. 2 Así que lo mandó llamar y le dijo: “¿Qué es esto que me dicen de ti? Rinde cuentas de tu administración, porque ya no puedes seguir en tu puesto”. 3 El administrador reflexionó: “¿Qué voy a hacer ahora que mi patrón va a quitarme del puesto? No tengo fuerzas para cavar, y me da vergüenza pedir limosna. 4 Tengo que asegurarme de que, cuando me echen de la administración, haya gente que me reciba en su casa. ¡Ya sé lo que voy a hacer!”
5 »Llamó entonces a cada uno de los que debían algo a su patrón. Al primero le preguntó: “¿Cuánto debes a mi patrón?” 6 “Cien barriles[a] de aceite”, le contestó él. El administrador le dijo: “Toma tu factura, siéntate en seguida y escribe cincuenta”. 7 Luego preguntó al segundo: “Y tú, ¿cuánto debes?” “Cien sacos[b] de trigo”, contestó. El administrador le dijo: “Toma tu factura y escribe ochenta”.
8 »Pues bien, el patrón elogió al administrador de riquezas mundanas[c] por haber actuado con astucia. Es que los de este mundo, en su trato con los que son como ellos, son más astutos que los que han recibido la luz. 9 Por eso os digo que os valgáis de las riquezas mundanas para ganar amigos,[d] a fin de que cuando estas se acaben haya quienes os reciban en las viviendas eternas.
10 »El que es honrado[e] en lo poco también lo será en lo mucho; y el que no es íntegro[f] en lo poco tampoco lo será en lo mucho. 11 Por eso, si no habéis sido honrados en el uso de las riquezas mundanas,[g] ¿quién os confiará las verdaderas? 12 Y, si con lo ajeno no habéis sido honrados, ¿quién os dará lo que os pertenece?
13 »Ningún sirviente puede servir a dos patrones. Menospreciará a uno y amará al otro, o querrá mucho a uno y despreciará al otro. No podéis servir a la vez a Dios y a las riquezas».
14 Oían todo esto los fariseos, a quienes les encantaba el dinero, y se burlaban de Jesús. 15 Él les dijo: «Vosotros os hacéis los buenos ante la gente, pero Dios conoce vuestros corazones. Daos cuenta de que aquello que la gente tiene en gran estima es detestable delante de Dios.

16 »La ley y los profetas se proclamaron hasta Juan. Desde entonces se anuncian las buenas nuevas del reino de Dios, y todos se esfuerzan por entrar en él.[h] 17 Es más fácil que desaparezcan el cielo y la tierra que caiga una sola tilde de la ley.
18 »Todo el que se divorcia de su esposa y se casa con otra comete adulterio; y el que se casa con la divorciada comete adulterio.
El rico y Lázaro
19 »Había un hombre rico que se vestía lujosamente[i] y daba espléndidos banquetes todos los días. 20 A la puerta de su casa se tendía un mendigo llamado Lázaro, que estaba cubierto de llagas 21 y que hubiera querido llenarse el estómago con lo que caía de la mesa del rico. Hasta los perros se acercaban y le lamían las llagas.
22 »Resulta que murió el mendigo, y los ángeles se lo llevaron para que estuviera al lado de Abraham. También murió el rico, y lo sepultaron. 23 En el infierno,[j] en medio de sus tormentos, el rico levantó los ojos y vio de lejos a Abraham, y a Lázaro junto a él. 24 Así que alzó la voz y lo llamó: “Padre Abraham, ten compasión de mí y manda a Lázaro que moje la punta del dedo en agua y me refresque la lengua, porque estoy sufriendo mucho en este fuego”. 25 Pero Abraham le contestó: “Hijo, recuerda que durante tu vida te fue muy bien, mientras que a Lázaro le fue muy mal; pero ahora a él le toca recibir consuelo aquí, y a ti, sufrir terriblemente. 26 Además de eso, hay un gran abismo entre nosotros y vosotros, de modo que los que quieren pasar de aquí para allá no pueden, ni tampoco pueden los de allá para acá”.
27 »Él respondió: “Entonces te ruego, padre, que mandes a Lázaro a la casa de mi padre, 28 para que advierta a mis cinco hermanos y no vengan ellos también a este lugar de tormento”. 29 Pero Abraham le contestó: “Ya tienen a Moisés y a los profetas; ¡que les hagan caso a ellos!” 30 “No les harán caso, padre Abraham —replicó el rico—; en cambio, si se les presentara uno de entre los muertos, entonces sí se arrepentirían”. 31 Abraham le dijo: “Si no hacen caso a Moisés y a los profetas, tampoco se convencerán aunque alguien se levante de entre los muertos”».

16 Jesus told his disciples: “There was a rich man whose manager was accused of wasting his possessions.(A) 2 So he called him in and asked him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your management, because you cannot be manager any longer.’
3 “The manager said to himself, ‘What shall I do now? My master is taking away my job. I’m not strong enough to dig, and I’m ashamed to beg— 4 I know what I’ll do so that, when I lose my job here, people will welcome me into their houses.’
5 “So he called in each one of his master’s debtors. He asked the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’
6 “‘Nine hundred gallons[a] of olive oil,’ he replied.
“The manager told him, ‘Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it four hundred and fifty.’
7 “Then he asked the second, ‘And how much do you owe?’
“‘A thousand bushels[b] of wheat,’ he replied.
“He told him, ‘Take your bill and make it eight hundred.’
8 “The master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly. For the people of this world(B) are more shrewd(C) in dealing with their own kind than are the people of the light.(D) 9 I tell you, use worldly wealth(E) to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.(F)
10 “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much,(G) and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. 11 So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth,(H) who will trust you with true riches? 12 And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else’s property, who will give you property of your own?
13 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”(I)
14 The Pharisees, who loved money,(J) heard all this and were sneering at Jesus.(K) 15 He said to them, “You are the ones who justify yourselves(L) in the eyes of others, but God knows your hearts.(M) What people value highly is detestable in God’s sight.
