Judas verraadt Jezus
22 Het was al bijna Pasen en het Feest van de Ongegiste Broden.[a] 2 De leiders van de priesters en de wetgeleerden probeerden een plan te bedenken om Jezus uit de weg te ruimen. Maar ze waren bang voor de mensen. 3 Toen kwam de duivel in Judas Iskariot, één van de twaalf leerlingen. 4 Judas ging naar de leiders van de priesters en de leiders van het volk. Hij besprak met hen hoe hij Jezus aan hen zou kunnen verraden. 5 Ze waren erg blij en beloofden dat ze hem ervoor zouden betalen. 6 Hij zocht naar een moment om Hem aan hen te verraden als er geen grote groepen mensen om Hem heen waren.
Het Paasfeest
7 Het was de eerste dag van het Feest van de Ongegiste Broden. Op die dag moet het paaslam worden geslacht. 8 Jezus vroeg aan Petrus en Johannes om de paasmaaltijd te gaan klaarmaken. 9 Ze vroegen: "Waar wilt U dat we het klaarmaken?" 10 Hij zei tegen hen: "Zodra jullie de stad binnen komen, zullen jullie een man tegenkomen die een kruik water draagt.[b] Volg hem en ga het huis in waar hij naar binnen gaat. 11 Zeg tegen de heer van dat huis: 'De Meester vraagt in welke kamer Hij met zijn leerlingen de paasmaaltijd kan eten.' 12 Hij zal jullie een grote bovenzaal laten zien. Daar staat alles wat nodig is. Maak daar de paasmaaltijd klaar." 13 Ze gingen op weg en alles gebeurde zoals Jezus had gezegd. En ze maakten het paaslam klaar.
14 Toen het tijd was voor de maaltijd, ging Hij met de twaalf leerlingen aan tafel. 15 Hij zei: "Ik heb er heel erg naar uitgekeken om deze paasmaaltijd met jullie te eten voordat Ik lijd. 16 Want Ik zal het paaslam niet meer eten, totdat het werkelijkheid zal zijn geworden in het Koninkrijk van God." 17 Hij nam een beker met wijn en dankte God ervoor. Toen zei Hij: "Drink uit deze beker en geef hem aan elkaar door. 18 Want Ik zeg jullie dat Ik geen wijn meer zal drinken, totdat het Koninkrijk van God is gekomen." 19 En Hij nam een brood en dankte God ervoor. Toen brak Hij het in stukken, gaf die aan hen en zei: "Dit is mijn lichaam dat voor jullie wordt gebroken. Eet hiervan en denk aan Mij." 20 Hetzelfde deed Hij met de beker na de maaltijd, en zei: "Deze wijn is het bloed waarmee God een nieuw verbond sluit met de mensen.[c] Het is mijn bloed dat voor jullie wordt uitgegoten. 21 Maar let op: de man die Mij zal verraden, zit hier met Mij aan tafel. 22 De Mensenzoon zal sterven op de manier die God heeft bepaald. Maar het zal slecht aflopen met de man die Hem verraadt!" 23 Toen begonnen ze er met elkaar over te praten wie van hen dat zou doen.
24 Ook kregen ze ruzie over de vraag wie van hen het belangrijkste was. 25 Maar Jezus zei tegen hen: "De koningen van de volken heersen over de volken. En de machtige mensen worden weldoeners genoemd. 26 Maar zo moet het bij jullie niet zijn. Als je de oudste bent, wees dan net zo bescheiden alsof je de jongste was. En als je een leider bent, gedraag je dan als een dienaar. 27 Want wie is het belangrijkste: de man die aan tafel zit, of de man die hem bedient? De man die aan tafel zit toch zeker? Maar Ík heb Me bij jullie als een dienaar gedragen.
28 Jullie zijn aldoor bij Mij gebleven, wát er ook gebeurde. 29 Aan jullie geef Ik het Koninkrijk, net zoals mijn Vader het aan Mij heeft gegeven. 30 Want Ik wil dat jullie in mijn Koninkrijk bij Mij aan tafel eten en drinken. En jullie zullen op twaalf tronen zitten om over de twaalf stammen van Israël te oordelen."
Jezus waarschuwt Simon Petrus
31 De Heer Jezus zei: "Simon, Simon, de duivel zal jullie allemaal zeven als graan in een zeef. 32 Maar Ik heb voor je gebeden dat je je geloof niet zal verliezen. En luister, Simon. Als je eenmaal hebt ingezien dat je verkeerd hebt gedaan, moet je je broeders moed inspreken." Simon zei tegen Hem: 33 "Heer, ik ben bereid om met U gevangen genomen en gedood te worden!" 34 Maar Hij zei tegen hem: "Ik zeg je, Petrus, dat je vandaag drie keer zal zeggen dat je Mij niet kent. Nog vóórdat de haan kraait zal dat gebeuren."
35 Hij zei tegen hen: "Toen Ik jullie op pad stuurde zonder geld of reistas of sandalen, hebben jullie toen aan iets tekort gehad?" Ze zeiden: "Nee, Heer, aan niets." 36 Toen zei Jezus: "Maar nú zeg Ik: als je geld hebt, moet je dat meenemen, en ook een reistas. En als je geen zwaard hebt, moet je je mantel verkopen en een zwaard kopen. 37 Want Ik zeg jullie dat wat er over Mij in de Boeken geschreven is, nu gaat gebeuren. Daar staat: 'Hij is als een misdadiger behandeld.' En dat gaat nu gebeuren." 38 Ze zeiden: "Kijk Heer, hier zijn twee zwaarden!" Hij zei tegen hen: "Dat is genoeg."
In de tuin van Getsémané
39 Jezus verliet de stad en ging zoals altijd naar de Olijfberg. Zijn leerlingen gingen met Hem mee. 40 Toen ze daar waren aangekomen, zei Hij tegen hen: "Bid dat jullie je geloof niet zullen verliezen door wat er gaat gebeuren." 41 En Hij liep een eindje bij hen vandaan. Op ongeveer een steenworp afstand knielde Hij neer en begon te bidden. 42 Hij bad: "Vader, laat Mij alstublieft niet de beker van uw straf leeg hoeven te drinken."[d] Maar Ik zal niet doen wat Ik Zelf wil, maar wat U wil." 43 Toen kwam er een engel bij Hem om Hem kracht te geven. 44 Daarna bad Hij nog vuriger. Hij begon zó bang te worden, dat zijn zweetdruppels veranderden in bloeddruppels die op de grond vielen. 45 Toen Hij klaar was met bidden, stond Hij op en ging naar zijn leerlingen. Hij merkte dat ze van verdriet in slaap waren gevallen. 46 Hij zei: "Waarom slapen jullie? Sta op en bid dat jullie je geloof niet zullen verliezen."
Jezus wordt gevangen genomen
47 Op datzelfde moment kwam er een grote groep mensen op hen af. De man die Judas heette, één van de twaalf leerlingen, liep voor hen uit. Hij liep naar Jezus toe om hem met een kus te begroeten. 48 Jezus zei tegen hem: "Judas, verraad je de Mensenzoon met een kus?" 49 De leerlingen die met Hem waren meegekomen, zagen wat er ging gebeuren. Ze vroegen: "Heer, zullen we er met ons zwaard op los slaan?" 50 En één van hen raakte de slaaf van de hogepriester en hakte hem het rechteroor af. 51 Maar Jezus zei: "Zo is het genoeg." Hij raakte het oor aan en genas de man.
52 De mannen die op hen afgekomen waren, waren de leiders van de priesters en de bewakers van de tempel en de leiders van het volk. Jezus zei tegen hen: "Jullie doen alsof jullie een rover gevangen moeten nemen, met die zwaarden en die knuppels. 53 Elke dag zat Ik bij jullie in de tempel. Maar toen hebben jullie geen hand naar Mij uitgestoken. Maar dit is jullie moment. Nu heeft de duisternis de macht."
Petrus zegt dat hij Jezus niet kent
54 Toen ze Jezus gevangen hadden genomen, namen ze Hem mee naar het huis van de hogepriester. Petrus volgde hen op een afstand. 55 De mensen maakten een vuur op de binnenplaats en gingen bij elkaar zitten. Petrus ging tussen hen in zitten. 56 Bij het licht van het vuur zag een slavin hem daar. Ze bekeek hem eens goed en zei: "Die man daar was óók bij Hem!" 57 Maar hij zei: "Mens, ik ken Hem niet!" 58 Even later zag een ander hem en zei: "Jij hoort óók bij hen!" Maar Petrus zei: "Man, ik niet!" 59 Ongeveer een uur later zei een ander heel stellig: "Ja hoor, hij hoort ook bij Hem, want hij is óók een Galileeër!" 60 Maar Petrus zei: "Man, ik weet niet waar je het over hebt!" Op datzelfde moment kraaide er een haan. 61 De Heer Jezus draaide Zich om en keek Petrus aan. Toen herinnerde Petrus zich wat Jezus gezegd had: 'Voordat de haan kraait, zul je drie keer gezegd hebben dat je Mij niet kent.' 62 Hij liep naar buiten en begon vreselijk te huilen.
63 De mannen die Jezus vasthielden, maakten Hem belachelijk en sloegen Hem. 64 Ze gooiden een doek over zijn hoofd en zeiden: "Profeteer eens! Wie heeft Je geslagen?" 65 En ze zeiden nog veel meer dingen om Hem te beledigen.
Jezus voor de Vergadering
66 Zodra het dag werd, kwam de Vergadering van de leiders van het volk bij elkaar. Dat waren de leiders van de priesters en de wetgeleerden. Ze brachten Jezus voor de Vergadering. 67 Ze zeiden: "Als Jij de Messias bent, zeg het ons dan." Jezus antwoordde: "Al zou Ik dat zeggen, dan zouden jullie het toch niet geloven. 68 En al zou Ik jullie ernaar vragen, jullie zouden toch niet antwoorden en Mij niet vrijlaten. 69 Vanaf dit moment zal de Mensenzoon naast God zitten." 70 Ze zeiden: "Ben Jij dan de Zoon van God?" Hij zei tegen hen: "Jullie zeggen zelf dat IK dat BEN."[e] 71 Toen riepen ze: "Wat hebben we verder nog voor bewijs nodig dat Hij de doodstraf verdient? We hebben zelf gehoord wat Hij heeft gezegd!"

- Lukas 22:1 Het Feest van de Ongegiste Broden is direct na het Paasfeest. Het Paasfeest wordt op de eerste avond van het feest gevierd. De twee feesten horen bij elkaar. De Joden vieren daarmee het vertrek van het volk Israël uit de slavernij in Egypte. Lees Exodus 12. Tijdens de zeven dagen van het feest mag er helemaal geen brood met gist gegeten worden.
- Lukas 22:10 Water dragen was vrouwenwerk, dus deze man viel op.
- Lukas 22:20 God had eeuwen geleden al een verbond gesloten met Abraham en later met het hele volk dat uit hem was ontstaan. Lees Genesis 15:7-20 en Exodus 6:1-6. Dat was het oude verbond. Het nieuwe verbond van Jezus' dood is de vervulling van de beloften van het oude verbond.
- Lukas 22:42 Jezus ging de straf op Zich nemen die wíj verdiend hadden met onze ongehoorzaamheid aan God. Met de 'wijnbeker' wordt in de bijbel vaak Gods straf bedoeld. Lees bijvoorbeeld Jeremia 25:15.
- Lukas 22:70 Jezus gebruikt hier de woorden IK BEN. In het Grieks staat daar 'ego eimi,' wat veel nadrukkelijker is dan de gewone manier om 'ik ben...' te zeggen. In het oude testament maakt God Zich met de naam IK BEN aan Mozes bekend. Lees Exodus 3:14. Door deze naam te gebruiken geeft Jezus dus aan dat Hijzelf God is. Vergelijk met Matteüs 14:27.

Yesu Akwatibwa
47 Awo Yesu bwe yali ng’akyayogera, ekibiina ky’abantu ne batuuka nga Yuda, omu ku bayigirizwa be ekkumi n’ababiri, y’abakulembedde. Yuda n’ajja butereevu awali Yesu, n’amunywegera. 48 Naye Yesu n’amugamba nti, “Yuda, Omwana w’Omuntu omulyamu olukwe ng’omugwa mu kifuba?”

22 Now (B)the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called Passover. 2 And (C)the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might kill Him, for they feared the people.
3 (D)Then Satan entered Judas, surnamed Iscariot, who was numbered among the (E)twelve. 4 So he went his way and conferred with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray Him to them. 5 And they were glad, and (F)agreed to give him money. 6 So he promised and sought opportunity to (G)betray Him to them in the absence of the multitude.
Jesus and His Disciples Prepare the Passover
7 (H)Then came the Day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover must be [a]killed. 8 And He sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat.”
9 So they said to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare?”
10 And He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered the city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house which he enters. 11 Then you shall say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?” ’ 12 Then he will show you a large, furnished upper room; there make ready.”
13 So they went and (I)found it just as He had said to them, and they prepared the Passover.
Jesus Institutes the Lord’s Supper
14 (J)When the hour had come, He sat down, and the [b]twelve apostles with Him. 15 Then He said to them, “With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; 16 for I say to you, I will no longer eat of it (K)until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”
17 Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves; 18 for (L)I say to you, [c]I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”
19 (M)And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My (N)body which is given for you; (O)do this in remembrance of Me.”
20 Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, (P)“This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you. 21 (Q)But behold, the hand of My betrayer is with Me on the table. 22 (R)And truly the Son of Man goes (S)as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!”
23 (T)Then they began to question among themselves, which of them it was who would do this thing.
The Disciples Argue About Greatness
24 (U)Now there was also a dispute among them, as to which of them should be considered the greatest. 25 (V)And He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called ‘benefactors.’ 26 (W)But not so among you; on the contrary, (X)he who is greatest among you, let him be as the younger, and he who governs as he who serves. 27 (Y)For who is greater, he who sits at the table, or he who serves? Is it not he who sits at the table? Yet (Z)I am among you as the One who serves.
28 “But you are those who have continued with Me in (AA)My trials. 29 And (AB)I bestow upon you a kingdom, just as My Father bestowed one upon Me, 30 that (AC)you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, (AD)and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.”
Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(AE)
31 [d]And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, (AF)Satan has asked for you, that he may (AG)sift you as wheat. 32 But (AH)I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, (AI)strengthen your brethren.”
33 But he said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You, both to prison and to death.”
34 (AJ)Then He said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster shall not crow this day before you will deny three times that you know Me.”
Supplies for the Road
35 (AK)And He said to them, “When I sent you without money bag, knapsack, and sandals, did you lack anything?”
So they said, “Nothing.”
36 Then He said to them, “But now, he who has a money bag, let him take it, and likewise a knapsack; and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one. 37 For I say to you that this which is written must still be [e]accomplished in Me: (AL)‘And He was numbered with the transgressors.’ For the things concerning Me have an end.”
38 So they said, “Lord, look, here are two swords.”
And He said to them, “It is enough.”
The Prayer in the Garden(AM)
39 (AN)Coming out, (AO)He went to the Mount of Olives, as He was accustomed, and His disciples also followed Him. 40 (AP)When He came to the place, He said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.”
41 (AQ)And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless (AR)not My will, but Yours, be done.” 43 [f]Then (AS)an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. 44 (AT)And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
45 When He rose up from prayer, and had come to His disciples, He found them sleeping from sorrow. 46 Then He said to them, “Why (AU)do you sleep? Rise and (AV)pray, lest you enter into temptation.”
Betrayal and Arrest in Gethsemane(AW)
47 And while He was still speaking, (AX)behold, a multitude; and he who was called (AY)Judas, one of the twelve, went before them and drew near to Jesus to kiss Him. 48 But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a (AZ)kiss?”
49 When those around Him saw what was going to happen, they said to Him, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?” 50 And (BA)one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear.
51 But Jesus answered and said, “Permit even this.” And He touched his ear and healed him.
52 (BB)Then Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and the elders who had come to Him, “Have you come out, as against a (BC)robber, with swords and clubs? 53 When I was with you daily in the (BD)temple, you did not try to seize Me. But this is your (BE)hour, and the power of darkness.”
Peter Denies Jesus, and Weeps Bitterly(BF)
54 (BG)Having arrested Him, they led Him and brought Him into the high priest’s house. (BH)But Peter followed at a distance. 55 (BI)Now when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them. 56 And a certain servant girl, seeing him as he sat by the fire, looked intently at him and said, “This man was also with Him.”
57 But he denied [g]Him, saying, “Woman, I do not know Him.”
58 (BJ)And after a little while another saw him and said, “You also are of them.”
But Peter said, “Man, I am not!”
59 (BK)Then after about an hour had passed, another confidently affirmed, saying, “Surely this fellow also was with Him, for he is a (BL)Galilean.”
60 But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are saying!”
Immediately, while he was still speaking, [h]the rooster crowed. 61 And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then (BM)Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, (BN)“Before the rooster [i]crows, you will deny Me three times.” 62 So Peter went out and wept bitterly.
Jesus Mocked and Beaten(BO)
63 (BP)Now the men who held Jesus mocked Him and (BQ)beat Him. 64 [j]And having blindfolded Him, they (BR)struck Him on the face and asked Him, saying, “Prophesy! Who is the one who struck You?” 65 And many other things they blasphemously spoke against Him.
Jesus Faces the Sanhedrin(BS)
66 (BT)As soon as it was day, (BU)the elders of the people, both chief priests and scribes, came together and led Him into their council, saying, 67 (BV)“If You are the Christ, tell us.”
But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will (BW)by no means believe. 68 And if I [k]also ask you, you will by no means answer [l]Me or let Me go. 69 (BX)Hereafter the Son of Man will sit on the right hand of the power of God.”
70 Then they all said, “Are You then the Son of God?”
So He said to them, (BY)“You rightly say that I am.”
71 (BZ)And they said, “What further testimony do we need? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth.”

Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus(A)
22 Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching,(B) 2 and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus,(C) for they were afraid of the people. 3 Then Satan(D) entered Judas, called Iscariot,(E) one of the Twelve. 4 And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard(F) and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. 5 They were delighted and agreed to give him money.(G) 6 He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present.
The Last Supper(H)(I)(J)(K)(L)
7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.(M) 8 Jesus sent Peter and John,(N) saying, “Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.”
9 “Where do you want us to prepare for it?” they asked.
10 He replied, “As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, 11 and say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 12 He will show you a large room upstairs, all furnished. Make preparations there.”
13 They left and found things just as Jesus had told them.(O) So they prepared the Passover.
14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles(P) reclined at the table.(Q) 15 And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.(R) 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.”(S)
17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you. 18 For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”
19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it,(T) and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”
20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant(U) in my blood, which is poured out for you.[a] 21 But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table.(V) 22 The Son of Man(W) will go as it has been decreed.(X) But woe to that man who betrays him!” 23 They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this.
24 A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest.(Y) 25 Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. 26 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest,(Z) and the one who rules like the one who serves.(AA) 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.(AB) 28 You are those who have stood by me in my trials. 29 And I confer on you a kingdom,(AC) just as my Father conferred one on me, 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom(AD) and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.(AE)
31 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked(AF) to sift all of you as wheat.(AG) 32 But I have prayed for you,(AH) Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”(AI)
33 But he replied, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.”(AJ)
34 Jesus answered, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.”
35 Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals,(AK) did you lack anything?”
“Nothing,” they answered.
36 He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. 37 It is written: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors’[b];(AL) and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment.”
38 The disciples said, “See, Lord, here are two swords.”
“That’s enough!” he replied.
Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives(AM)
39 Jesus went out as usual(AN) to the Mount of Olives,(AO) and his disciples followed him. 40 On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.”(AP) 41 He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down(AQ) and prayed, 42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup(AR) from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”(AS) 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.(AT) 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.[c]
45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. 46 “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”(AU)
Jesus Arrested(AV)
47 While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, 48 but Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”
49 When Jesus’ followers saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, should we strike with our swords?”(AW) 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear.
51 But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.
52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard,(AX) and the elders, who had come for him, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? 53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts,(AY) and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour(AZ)—when darkness reigns.”(BA)
Peter Disowns Jesus(BB)
54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest.(BC) Peter followed at a distance.(BD) 55 And when some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. 56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, “This man was with him.”
57 But he denied it. “Woman, I don’t know him,” he said.
58 A little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.”
“Man, I am not!” Peter replied.
59 About an hour later another asserted, “Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.”(BE)
60 Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 The Lord(BF) turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.”(BG) 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly.
The Guards Mock Jesus(BH)
63 The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. 64 They blindfolded him and demanded, “Prophesy! Who hit you?” 65 And they said many other insulting things to him.(BI)
Jesus Before Pilate and Herod(BJ)(BK)(BL)
66 At daybreak the council(BM) of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the teachers of the law, met together,(BN) and Jesus was led before them. 67 “If you are the Messiah,” they said, “tell us.”
Jesus answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe me, 68 and if I asked you, you would not answer.(BO) 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.”(BP)
70 They all asked, “Are you then the Son of God?”(BQ)
He replied, “You say that I am.”(BR)
71 Then they said, “Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips.”
