Layunin ng Aklat

1 Yamang marami ang nagsikap bumuo ng isang maayos na salaysay tungkol sa mga naganap sa ating kalagitnaan, 2 ayon sa inilahad sa atin ng mga taong noon pa mang simula ay mga saksi na at mga lingkod ng salita; 3 at, matapos ang aking masusing pagsisiyasat sa lahat buhat sa simula, minabuti kong sumulat din ng isang maayos na salaysay para sa iyo, kagalang-galang na Teofilo, 4 upang maunawaan mo ang katiyakan ng mga bagay na itinuro sa iyo.

Ipinahayag ang Kapanganakan ni Juan na Tagapagbautismo

5 Noong si Herodes pa ang hari ng Judea, may isang pari mula sa pangkat ni Abias na ang pangalan ay Zacarias. Ang asawa niyang si Elizabeth ay mula sa angkan ni Aaron. 6 Kapwa sila matuwid sa paningin ng Diyos, nabubuhay na walang kapintasan sa pamamagitan ng pagsunod sa lahat ng mga utos at alituntunin ng Panginoon. 7 Subalit wala silang anak, sapagkat baog si Elizabeth at sila'y kapwa matanda na. 8 Isang araw, ginagampanan ni Zacarias ang kanyang tungkulin bilang pari noong manungkulan ang kanyang pangkat, 9 nabunot ang kanyang pangalan ayon sa kaugalian ng mga pari, upang pumasok sa templo ng Panginoon at magsunog ng insenso. 10 Sa oras ng paghahandog ng insenso, maraming tao ang nananalangin sa labas. 11 Bigla na lamang nagpakita sa kanya ang anghel ng Panginoon na nakatayo sa kanan ng dambana ng insenso. 12 Matinding takot ang naramdaman ni Zacarias nang makita niya ang anghel. 13 Ngunit sinabi sa kanya ng anghel, “Huwag kang matakot, Zacarias. Sapagkat dininig na ang iyong panalangin. Magdadalang-tao ang asawa mong si Elizabeth at bibigyan ka niya ng anak na lalaki at tatawagin mo ito sa pangalang Juan. 14 Matutuwa ka at magagalak, at marami ring matutuwa sa kanyang pagsilang. 15 Sapagkat siya'y magiging dakila sa harapan ng Panginoon. Hinding-hindi siya iinom ng alak o ng inuming nakalalasing. Sa sinapupunan pa lamang ng kanyang ina ay mapupuspos na siya ng Banal na Espiritu. 16 Marami sa mga anak ni Israel ang aakayin niyang magbalik-loob sa Panginoon nilang Diyos. 17 Mauuna siya sa lalakaran ng Panginoon taglay ang espiritu at kapangyarihang gaya ng kay Elias, upang pagkasunduin ang mga puso ng mga ama sa kanilang mga anak, at panumbalikin ang mga suwail sa karunungan ng matutuwid, upang ihanda ang isang bayang nakalaan para sa Panginoon.” 18 Sinabi ni Zacarias sa anghel, “Paano ko ito matitiyak? Matanda na ako, gayundin ang aking asawa.” 19 At sinabi sa kanya ng anghel, “Ako si Gabriel, na isang lingkod ng Diyos, ay isinugo upang magsabi sa iyo at maghatid ng mga Magandang Balitang ito. 20 Subalit dahil hindi mo pinaniwalaan ang mga sinabi ko na mangyayari sa takdang panahon, magiging pipi ka at hindi ka makapagsasalita hanggang sa araw na mangyari ang mga ito.” 21 Samantala, ang mga taong naghihintay kay Zacarias ay nagtaka kung bakit siya'y nagtatagal sa loob ng templo. 22 Nang lumabas siya ay hindi na siya makapagsalita. Napagtanto nilang siya'y nakakita ng isang pangitain sa templo. Sumesenyas lamang siya sa kanila at nanatiling pipi. 23 Nang matapos na ang panahon ng kanyang paglilingkod, umuwi siya sa kanyang bahay. 24 Pagkalipas ng mga araw na iyon ay naglihi ang kanyang asawang si Elizabeth. Limang buwan itong hindi nagpakita sa iba. Sinabi ni Elizabeth, 25 “Ganito ang ginawa ng Panginoon sa akin nang mga araw na ako'y kanyang pansinin upang alisin ang dahilan ng pang-aalipusta ng mga tao sa akin.”

Ipinahayag ang Kapanganakan ni Jesus

26 Nang ikaanim na buwan, isinugo ng Diyos ang anghel na si Gabriel sa isang bayan ng Galilea na kung tawagin ay Nazareth. 27 Isinugo(A) siya sa isang birheng nakatakdang ikasal sa isang lalaking mula sa angkan ni David na ang pangalan ay Jose. Maria ang pangalan ng birhen. 28 Lumapit sa kanya ang anghel, at sinabi nito, “Magalak ka, ikaw na pinagpala! Ang Panginoon ay sumasaiyo.”[a] 29 Subalit lubha niyang ikinalito ang sinabing iyon at inisip niya kung ano ang kahulugan ng pagbating iyon. 30 Sinabi sa kanya ng anghel, “Huwag kang matakot, Maria, sapagkat kinalugdan ka ng Diyos. 31 Kaya, magdadalang-tao ka at magsisilang ng isang lalaki, at tatawagin mo siya sa pangalang Jesus. 32 Siya'y (B) magiging dakila at tatawaging Anak ng Kataas-taasan. Ibibigay sa kanya ng Panginoong Diyos ang trono ng kanyang amang si David. 33 Maghahari siya magpakailanman sa sambahayan ni Jacob at ang paghahari niya ay walang katapusan.” 34 Sinabi ni Maria sa anghel, “Paano mangyayari ito gayong wala pa akong nakatalik na lalaki?” 35 Sumagot ang anghel sa kanya, “Bababa sa iyo ang Banal na Espiritu at lilimliman ka ng kapangyarihan ng Kataas-taasan. Kaya't ang isisilang ay banal at tatawaging Anak ng Diyos. 36 Dapat mong malaman na ang kamag-anak mong si Elizabeth ay naglilihi rin ng isang anak na lalaki, bagama't siya'y matanda na. Siya na dating tinatawag na baog ay anim na buwan nang buntis. 37 Sapagkat (C) sa Diyos ay walang imposible.” 38 At sinabi ni Maria, “Narito ako na lingkod ng Panginoon; mangyari sa akin ang ayon sa iyong salita.” Pagkatapos, iniwan siya ng anghel.

Dinalaw ni Maria si Elizabeth

39 Hindi nagtagal at naghanda si Maria at nagmadaling pumunta sa isang maburol na lupain sa bayan ng Judea. 40 Pumasok siya sa bahay ni Zacarias at binati si Elizabeth. 41 Nang marinig ni Elizabeth ang bati ni Maria, sumipa ang sanggol sa kanyang sinapupunan at si Elizabeth ay napuspos ng Banal na Espiritu. 42 Sumigaw siya nang malakas, at sinabi niya, “Pinagpala ka sa mga babae, at pinagpala rin naman ang bunga ng iyong sinapupunan! 43 Ano ang nangyari at ako ay dinalaw ng ina ng aking Panginoon? 44 Sapagkat pagkarinig ko ng iyong pagbati ay sumipa sa tuwa ang sanggol sa aking sinapupunan. 45 Mapalad ang babaing sumampalataya na matutupad ang mga bagay na sinabi sa kanya ng Panginoon.”

Umawit ng Papuri si Maria

46 Sinabi (D) ni Maria,

47 “Ang aking kaluluwa'y Panginoon ang dinadakila,
    at sa aking Diyos na Tagapagligtas, espiritu ko'y labis ang tuwa.
48 Sapagkat (E) nilingap ang kanyang hamak na alipin.
    At mula ngayo'y tatawagin akong mapalad ng lahat ng salinlahi.
49 Sapagkat siya na makapangyarihan ay gumawa ng mga dakilang bagay para sa akin
    at banal ang pangalan niyang angkin.
50 Kanyang pagkahabag, lahat ng salinlahi ang abot
    sa lahat ng sa kanya tunay na may takot.
51 Siya'y nagpakita ng lakas ng kanyang mga bisig;
    pinagwatak-watak niya ang mga palalò sa mga haka ng kanilang puso at isip.
52 Ang (F) mga makapangyarihan mula sa trono'y kanyang ibinagsak,
    at ang mga nasa abang kalagayan, kanya namang iniangat.
53 Binusog niya ng mabubuting bagay ang mga nagugutom,
    at ang mayayaman ay kanyang pinaalis na walang dalang baon.
54 Ang Israel na lingkod niya'y kanyang tinulungan,
    bilang pag-alaala sa kanyang kahabagan.
55 Ito'y (G) bilang pagtupad sa pangako niya sa ating mga magulang,
    kay Abraham at sa kanyang salinlahi magpakailanman.”

56 Nanatiling kasama ni Elizabeth si Maria nang may tatlong buwan bago ito umuwi sa kanyang tahanan.

Isinilang si Juan na Tagapagbautismo

57 Sumapit na ang kabuwanan ni Elizabeth at isinilang niya ang isang lalaki. 58 Nabalitaan ng kanyang mga kapitbahay at mga kamag-anak na nagpakita ng dakilang awa sa kanya ang Panginoon at sila'y nakigalak sa kanya. 59 Pagsapit (H) ng ikawalong araw ay dumating sila upang tuliin ang sanggol. Papangalanan sana nila ng Zacarias ang sanggol tulad ng pangalan ng kanyang ama. 60 Ngunit sinabi ng kanyang ina, “Hindi. Juan ang ipapangalan sa kanya.” 61 “Wala kang kamag-anak na may ganyang pangalan,” tugon nila. 62 Sinenyasan nila ang kanyang ama kung ano ang ibig niyang itawag sa sanggol.[b] 63 Humingi siya ng isang masusulatan at kanyang isinulat, “Ang kanyang pangalan ay Juan.” At namangha silang lahat. 64 Noon di'y nabuksan ang kanyang bibig at nakalagan ang kanyang dila. Siya'y nagsimulang magsabi ng pagpupuri sa Diyos. 65 Natakot ang lahat ng naninirahan sa kanilang paligid, at pinag-usapan ang mga ito sa buong maburol na lupain ng Judea. 66 Lahat ng mga nakarinig nito ay nag-isip, “Magiging ano nga kaya ang batang ito?” Sapagkat maliwanag na sumasakanya ang kamay ng Panginoon.

Ang Propesiya ni Zacarias

67 Napuspos ng Banal na Espiritu si Zacarias na ama ng bata, at nagpahayag ng propesiyang ito,

68 “Ang Diyos ng Israel dapat na papurihan,
    sapagkat kanyang dinalaw at tinubos ang kanyang bayan,
69 itinaas niya ang isang sungay ng kaligtasan para sa atin
    mula sa sambahayan ni David na kanyang alipin,
70 gaya nang sinabi niya sa pamamagitan ng kanyang mga banal na propeta mula noon pa man,
71 na tayo'y ililigtas niya mula sa ating mga kaaway at sa kamay ng lahat ng napopoot sa atin
72 upang ang habag sa ating mga ninuno ay ipakita
    at ang kanyang banal na tipan ay maalala,
73 ang pangakong ibinigay niya sa ating amang si Abraham,
74 na ipagkaloob sa atin, na tayong mga iniligtas sa kamay ng ating mga kaaway,
ay maglingkod sa kanya nang walang takot,
75 sa kabanalan at katuwiran
    sa harapan niya sa lahat ng ating mga araw.
76 At (I) ikaw, anak, ay tatawaging propeta ng Kataas-taasan,
    sapagkat mauuna ka sa Panginoon upang ihanda ang kanyang mga daan;
77 upang ipaalam ang kaligtasan sa kanyang bayan,
    sa pamamagitan ng pagpapatawad sa kanilang mga kasalanan,
78 sa pamamagitan ng magiliw na habag ng ating Diyos,
sisilay[c] sa atin ang bukang-liwayway,
79     upang (J) bigyang-liwanag ang mga nakaupo sa kadiliman at sa lilim ng kamatayan,
upang patnubayan ang ating mga paa sa daan ng kapayapaan.”

80 Lumaki ang sanggol at lumakas sa espiritu. Nanirahan siya sa ilang hanggang sa araw na siya'y magpakita sa Israel.

Introducción

1 Por cuanto muchos han tratado de compilar una historia de las cosas que entre nosotros son muy ciertas[a](A), 2 tal como nos las han transmitido los que desde el principio(B) fueron[b] testigos oculares(C) y ministros(D) de la palabra[c](E), 3 también a mí me ha parecido conveniente, después de haberlo investigado[d] todo con diligencia desde el principio(F), escribírtelas ordenadamente(G), excelentísimo(H) Teófilo(I), 4 para que sepas la verdad precisa acerca de las cosas que te han sido enseñadas[e](J).

Anuncio del nacimiento de Juan el Bautista

5 Hubo en los días de Herodes(K), rey de Judea, cierto sacerdote llamado Zacarías, del grupo de Abías(L), que tenía por mujer una de las hijas de Aarón[f] que se llamaba Elisabet. 6 Ambos eran justos delante de Dios(M), y se conducían intachablemente(N) en todos los mandamientos y preceptos del Señor. 7 No tenían hijos, porque Elisabet era estéril, y ambos eran de edad avanzada[g].

8 Pero aconteció que mientras Zacarías[h] ejercía su ministerio sacerdotal delante de Dios según el orden indicado a su grupo(O), 9 conforme a la costumbre del sacerdocio, fue escogido por sorteo para entrar al templo del Señor y quemar incienso(P). 10 Y toda la multitud del pueblo estaba fuera orando(Q) a la hora de la ofrenda de incienso. 11 Y se le apareció un ángel del Señor(R), de pie, a la derecha del altar del incienso. 12 Al verlo, Zacarías se turbó, y el temor se apoderó de[i] él(S). 13 Pero el ángel le dijo: No temas(T), Zacarías, porque tu petición ha sido oída, y tu mujer Elisabet te dará a luz un hijo, y lo llamarás[j] Juan(U). 14 Y tendrás gozo y alegría, y muchos se regocijarán por su nacimiento. 15 Porque él será grande delante del Señor; no beberá ni vino ni licor(V), y será lleno del Espíritu Santo aun desde el vientre de su madre. 16 Y él hará volver a muchos de los hijos de Israel al Señor su Dios(W). 17 E irá delante de Él(X) en el espíritu y poder de Elías(Y) para hacer volver los corazones de los padres a los hijos(Z), y a los desobedientes a la actitud de los justos, a fin de preparar(AA) para el Señor un pueblo bien dispuesto.

18 Entonces Zacarías dijo al ángel: ¿Cómo podré saber esto? Porque yo soy anciano y mi mujer es de edad avanzada[k](AB). 19 Respondiendo el ángel, le dijo: Yo soy Gabriel(AC), que estoy en[l] la presencia de Dios(AD), y he sido enviado para hablarte y anunciarte estas buenas nuevas. 20 Y he aquí, te quedarás mudo, y no podrás hablar hasta el día en que todo esto acontezca, por cuanto no creíste mis palabras, las cuales se cumplirán a su debido tiempo. 21 Y el pueblo estaba esperando a Zacarías, y se extrañaba de su tardanza en el templo. 22 Pero cuando salió, no podía hablarles, y se dieron cuenta de que había visto una visión en el templo; y él les hablaba por señas(AE), y permanecía mudo. 23 Y[m] cuando se cumplieron los días de su servicio sacerdotal, regresó a su casa.

24 Y después de estos días, Elisabet su mujer concibió, y se recluyó[n] por cinco meses, diciendo: 25 Así ha obrado el Señor conmigo en los días en que se dignó mirarme para quitar mi afrenta entre los hombres(AF).

Anuncio del nacimiento de Jesús

26 Y al sexto mes, el ángel Gabriel(AG) fue enviado por Dios a una ciudad de Galilea llamada Nazaret(AH), 27 a una virgen desposada[o] con un hombre que se llamaba José(AI), de los descendientes[p] de David(AJ); y el nombre de la virgen era María. 28 Y entrando el ángel, le dijo: ¡Salve, muy favorecida[q]! El Señor está[r] contigo; bendita eres tú entre las mujeres[s]. 29 Pero ella se turbó(AK) mucho por estas[t] palabras, y se preguntaba qué clase de saludo sería este. 30 Y el ángel le dijo: No temas(AL), María, porque has hallado gracia delante de Dios. 31 Y he aquí, concebirás en tu seno y darás a luz un hijo, y le pondrás por[u] nombre Jesús(AM). 32 Este será grande y será llamado Hijo del Altísimo(AN); y el Señor Dios le dará el trono de su padre David(AO); 33 y reinará sobre la casa de Jacob(AP) para siempre, y su reino no tendrá fin(AQ). 34 Entonces María dijo al ángel: ¿Cómo será esto, puesto que soy virgen[v]? 35 Respondiendo el ángel, le dijo: El Espíritu Santo vendrá sobre ti(AR), y el poder del Altísimo(AS) te cubrirá con su sombra; por eso el santo Niño(AT) que nacerá[w] será llamado Hijo de Dios(AU). 36 Y he aquí, tu parienta Elisabet en su vejez también ha concebido un hijo; y este es el sexto mes para ella, la que llamaban estéril. 37 Porque ninguna cosa[x] será imposible para[y] Dios(AV). 38 Entonces María dijo: He aquí la sierva del Señor; hágase conmigo conforme a tu palabra. Y el ángel se fue de su presencia.

María visita a Elisabet

39 En esos[z] días María se levantó y fue apresuradamente a la región montañosa(AW), a una ciudad de Judá; 40 y entró en casa de Zacarías y saludó a Elisabet. 41 Y aconteció que cuando Elisabet oyó el saludo de María, la criatura saltó en su vientre; y Elisabet fue llena del Espíritu Santo(AX), 42 y exclamó a gran voz y dijo: ¡Bendita tú entre las mujeres, y bendito el fruto de tu vientre! 43 ¿Por qué me ha acontecido esto a mí[aa], que la madre de mi Señor(AY) venga a mí? 44 Porque he aquí, apenas la voz de tu saludo llegó a mis oídos, la criatura saltó de gozo en mi vientre. 45 Y bienaventurada(AZ) la que creyó que tendrá[ab] cumplimiento lo que le fue dicho de parte del Señor. 46 Entonces María dijo:

(BA)Mi alma engrandece al Señor(BB),
47 y mi espíritu se regocija en Dios(BC) mi Salvador(BD).
48 Porque ha mirado la humilde condición de esta su sierva;
pues he aquí, desde ahora en adelante todas las generaciones me tendrán por bienaventurada(BE).
49 Porque grandes cosas me ha hecho el Poderoso;
y santo es su nombre.
50 Y de generación en generación[ac] es su misericordia
para los que le temen(BF).
51 Ha hecho proezas[ad] con su brazo(BG);
ha esparcido a los soberbios en el pensamiento de sus corazones.
52 Ha quitado a los poderosos de sus tronos;
y ha exaltado a los humildes(BH);
53 a los hambrientos ha colmado de bienes(BI)
y ha despedido a los ricos con las manos vacías.
54 Ha ayudado a Israel, su siervo,
para recuerdo de su[ae] misericordia
55 tal como dijo a nuestros padres,
a Abraham y a su descendencia[af] para siempre(BJ).

56 Y María se quedó con Elisabet[ag] como tres meses, y después regresó a su casa.

Nacimiento de Juan el Bautista

57 Cuando a Elisabet se le cumplió el tiempo de su alumbramiento, dio a luz un hijo. 58 Y sus vecinos y parientes oyeron que el Señor había demostrado su gran[ah] misericordia(BK) hacia ella; y se regocijaban con ella. 59 Y[ai] al octavo día vinieron para circuncidar al niño(BL), y lo iban a llamar Zacarías según el nombre de su padre. 60 Pero la[aj] madre respondió, y dijo: No, sino que se llamará Juan(BM). 61 Y le dijeron: No hay nadie en tu familia[ak] que tenga ese nombre. 62 Entonces preguntaban por[al] señas(BN) al padre, cómo lo quería llamar. 63 Y él pidió una tablilla y escribió lo siguiente[am]: Su nombre es Juan(BO). Y todos se maravillaron. 64 Al instante le fue abierta su boca y suelta su lengua, y comenzó a hablar(BP) dando alabanza a Dios. 65 Y vino temor sobre todos los que vivían a su alrededor; y todas estas cosas se comentaban en toda la región montañosa(BQ) de Judea. 66 Y todos los que las oían las guardaban en su corazón, diciendo: ¿Qué, pues, llegará a ser este niño? Porque la mano del Señor ciertamente estaba con él(BR).

Profecía de Zacarías

67 Y su padre Zacarías fue lleno del Espíritu Santo(BS), y profetizó(BT) diciendo:

68 Bendito sea el Señor, Dios de Israel,
porque nos ha visitado y ha efectuado redención(BU) para su pueblo,
69 y nos ha levantado un cuerno de salvación(BV)
en la casa de David su siervo(BW),
70 tal como lo anunció[an] por boca de sus santos profetas(BX) desde los tiempos antiguos(BY),
71 salvación[ao](BZ) de nuestros enemigos
y de la mano de todos los que nos aborrecen(CA);
72 para mostrar misericordia(CB) a nuestros padres,
y para recordar su santo pacto(CC),
73 el juramento que hizo[ap] a nuestro padre Abraham(CD):
74 concedernos que, librados de la mano de nuestros enemigos,
le sirvamos sin temor
75 en santidad y justicia(CE) delante de Él, todos nuestros días.
76 Y tú, niño, serás llamado profeta(CF) del Altísimo(CG);
porque irás delante del Señor(CH) para preparar sus caminos(CI);
77 para dar a su pueblo el conocimiento de la salvación
por[aq] el perdón de sus pecados(CJ),
78 por la entrañable misericordia de nuestro Dios,
con que la Aurora(CK) nos visitará desde lo alto,
79 para dar luz a los que habitan en tinieblas y en sombra de muerte(CL),
para guiar nuestros pies en el camino de paz.

80 Y el niño crecía y se fortalecía(CM) en espíritu; y vivió en lugares desiertos hasta el día en que apareció en público a Israel.

Introduction(A)

1 Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled[a] among us, 2 just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first(B) were eyewitnesses(C) and servants of the word.(D) 3 With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account(E) for you, most excellent(F) Theophilus,(G) 4 so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.(H)

The Birth of John the Baptist Foretold

5 In the time of Herod king of Judea(I) there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah;(J) his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. 6 Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly.(K) 7 But they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old.

8 Once when Zechariah’s division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God,(L) 9 he was chosen by lot,(M) according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense.(N) 10 And when the time for the burning of incense came, all the assembled worshipers were praying outside.(O)

11 Then an angel(P) of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense.(Q) 12 When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear.(R) 13 But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid,(S) Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John.(T) 14 He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth,(U) 15 for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink,(V) and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit(W) even before he is born.(X) 16 He will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God. 17 And he will go on before the Lord,(Y) in the spirit and power of Elijah,(Z) to turn the hearts of the parents to their children(AA) and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”(AB)

18 Zechariah asked the angel, “How can I be sure of this?(AC) I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.”(AD)

19 The angel said to him, “I am Gabriel.(AE) I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news. 20 And now you will be silent and not able to speak(AF) until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their appointed time.”

21 Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed so long in the temple. 22 When he came out, he could not speak to them. They realized he had seen a vision in the temple, for he kept making signs(AG) to them but remained unable to speak.

23 When his time of service was completed, he returned home. 24 After this his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion. 25 “The Lord has done this for me,” she said. “In these days he has shown his favor and taken away my disgrace(AH) among the people.”

The Birth of Jesus Foretold

26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel(AI) to Nazareth,(AJ) a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph,(AK) a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”

29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid,(AL) Mary; you have found favor with God.(AM) 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.(AN) 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.(AO) The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David,(AP) 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom(AQ) will never end.”(AR)

34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”

35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you,(AS) and the power of the Most High(AT) will overshadow you. So the holy one(AU) to be born will be called[b] the Son of God.(AV) 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child(AW) in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. 37 For no word from God will ever fail.”(AX)

38 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.

Mary Visits Elizabeth

39 At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea,(AY) 40 where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.(AZ) 42 In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women,(BA) and blessed is the child you will bear! 43 But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord(BB) should come to me? 44 As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”

Mary’s Song(BC)

46 And Mary said:

“My soul glorifies the Lord(BD)
47     and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,(BE)
48 for he has been mindful
    of the humble state of his servant.(BF)
From now on all generations will call me blessed,(BG)
49     for the Mighty One has done great things(BH) for me—
    holy is his name.(BI)
50 His mercy extends to those who fear him,
    from generation to generation.(BJ)
51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;(BK)
    he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.(BL)
52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones
    but has lifted up the humble.(BM)
53 He has filled the hungry with good things(BN)
    but has sent the rich away empty.
54 He has helped his servant Israel,
    remembering to be merciful(BO)
55 to Abraham and his descendants(BP) forever,
    just as he promised our ancestors.”

56 Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.

The Birth of John the Baptist

57 When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son. 58 Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy.

59 On the eighth day they came to circumcise(BQ) the child, and they were going to name him after his father Zechariah, 60 but his mother spoke up and said, “No! He is to be called John.”(BR)

61 They said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who has that name.”

62 Then they made signs(BS) to his father, to find out what he would like to name the child. 63 He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone’s astonishment he wrote, “His name is John.”(BT) 64 Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue set free, and he began to speak,(BU) praising God. 65 All the neighbors were filled with awe, and throughout the hill country of Judea(BV) people were talking about all these things. 66 Everyone who heard this wondered about it, asking, “What then is this child going to be?” For the Lord’s hand was with him.(BW)

Zechariah’s Song

67 His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit(BX) and prophesied:(BY)

68 “Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel,(BZ)
    because he has come to his people and redeemed them.(CA)
69 He has raised up a horn[c](CB) of salvation for us
    in the house of his servant David(CC)
70 (as he said through his holy prophets of long ago),(CD)
71 salvation from our enemies
    and from the hand of all who hate us—
72 to show mercy to our ancestors(CE)
    and to remember his holy covenant,(CF)
73     the oath he swore to our father Abraham:(CG)
74 to rescue us from the hand of our enemies,
    and to enable us to serve him(CH) without fear(CI)
75     in holiness and righteousness(CJ) before him all our days.

76 And you, my child, will be called a prophet(CK) of the Most High;(CL)
    for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him,(CM)
77 to give his people the knowledge of salvation
    through the forgiveness of their sins,(CN)
78 because of the tender mercy of our God,
    by which the rising sun(CO) will come to us from heaven
79 to shine on those living in darkness
    and in the shadow of death,(CP)
to guide our feet into the path of peace.”(CQ)

80 And the child grew and became strong in spirit[d];(CR) and he lived in the wilderness until he appeared publicly to Israel.
