18 1-2 主はモーセに、次のことを人々に教えるように言いました。「わたしはあなたがたの神、主である。 3 だから、異教徒のまねをしてはならない。長い間住んでいた異教の地エジプトや、これから行こうとするカナンの人々のようにふるまってはならない。 4-5 わたしのおきてだけに従いなさい。細かな点に至るまできちんと守りなさい。わたしはあなたがたの神、主だからだ。だれでも、わたしのおきてに従うなら生きる。わたしは主である。
6 近親者と性的に交わってはならない。わたしは主である。 7 娘が父と、息子が母と性的に交わってはならない。 8 また、父の妻（継母）も同じである。 9 実の姉妹とでも片方の親が違う姉妹とも、交わってはならない。同じ家で生まれても、ほかの家で生まれても変わりはない。 10 また、娘の娘であれ、息子の娘であれ、孫娘と交わってはならない。 11 腹違いの妹とも、 12 父方のおばとも交わってはならない。 13 母方のおばとも交わってはならない。 14 父方のおじの妻である義理のおばとも交わってはならない。

18 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘I am the Lord your God.(A) 3 You must not do as they do in Egypt, where you used to live, and you must not do as they do in the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you. Do not follow their practices.(B) 4 You must obey my laws(C) and be careful to follow my decrees.(D) I am the Lord your God.(E) 5 Keep my decrees and laws,(F) for the person who obeys them will live by them.(G) I am the Lord.
6 “‘No one is to approach any close relative to have sexual relations. I am the Lord.
7 “‘Do not dishonor your father(H) by having sexual relations with your mother.(I) She is your mother; do not have relations with her.
8 “‘Do not have sexual relations with your father’s wife;(J) that would dishonor your father.(K)
9 “‘Do not have sexual relations with your sister,(L) either your father’s daughter or your mother’s daughter, whether she was born in the same home or elsewhere.(M)
10 “‘Do not have sexual relations with your son’s daughter or your daughter’s daughter; that would dishonor you.
11 “‘Do not have sexual relations with the daughter of your father’s wife, born to your father; she is your sister.
12 “‘Do not have sexual relations with your father’s sister;(N) she is your father’s close relative.
13 “‘Do not have sexual relations with your mother’s sister,(O) because she is your mother’s close relative.
14 “‘Do not dishonor your father’s brother by approaching his wife to have sexual relations; she is your aunt.(P)
15 “‘Do not have sexual relations with your daughter-in-law.(Q) She is your son’s wife; do not have relations with her.(R)
16 “‘Do not have sexual relations with your brother’s wife;(S) that would dishonor your brother.
17 “‘Do not have sexual relations with both a woman and her daughter.(T) Do not have sexual relations with either her son’s daughter or her daughter’s daughter; they are her close relatives. That is wickedness.
18 “‘Do not take your wife’s sister(U) as a rival wife and have sexual relations with her while your wife is living.
19 “‘Do not approach a woman to have sexual relations during the uncleanness(V) of her monthly period.(W)
20 “‘Do not have sexual relations with your neighbor’s wife(X) and defile yourself with her.
21 “‘Do not give any of your children(Y) to be sacrificed to Molek,(Z) for you must not profane the name of your God.(AA) I am the Lord.(AB)
22 “‘Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman;(AC) that is detestable.(AD)
23 “‘Do not have sexual relations with an animal and defile yourself with it. A woman must not present herself to an animal to have sexual relations with it; that is a perversion.(AE)
24 “‘Do not defile yourselves in any of these ways, because this is how the nations that I am going to drive out before you(AF) became defiled.(AG) 25 Even the land was defiled;(AH) so I punished it for its sin,(AI) and the land vomited out its inhabitants.(AJ) 26 But you must keep my decrees and my laws.(AK) The native-born and the foreigners residing among you must not do any of these detestable things, 27 for all these things were done by the people who lived in the land before you, and the land became defiled. 28 And if you defile the land,(AL) it will vomit you out(AM) as it vomited out the nations that were before you.
29 “‘Everyone who does any of these detestable things—such persons must be cut off from their people. 30 Keep my requirements(AN) and do not follow any of the detestable customs that were practiced before you came and do not defile yourselves with them. I am the Lord your God.(AO)’”

19 アポロがコリントにいる間に、パウロはトルコを通ってエペソに来ました。そこで会った何人かの弟子たちに、パウロは尋ねました。 2 「ところで、信じた時、聖霊を受けましたか。」「いったい何のことでしょう。聖霊のことなど聞いたこともありません。」
3 「では、バプテスマ（洗礼）を受けた時、どんな信仰告白をしたのですか？」「バプテスマのヨハネの教えた……。」
4 これを聞いたパウロは、ヨハネのバプテスマは、罪を離れて神に立ち返る決意を表すものだから、それを受けた者が、ヨハネの証言どおり、あとから来られたイエスを信じるのは当然のことだと説明しました。 5 彼らはすぐ、主イエスの名によってバプテスマを受けました。 6 そして、パウロが彼らの頭に手を置くと、聖霊が下りました。すると彼らは、外国語で話したり、預言したりし始めたのです。 7 みなで十二名ほどでした。
8 このあと、パウロは三か月のあいだ会堂で、安息日ごとに大胆に説教し、神の国のことを教えました。 9 しかしある者たちがパウロの話を非難し、人々の面前でキリストに逆らうことばを口にしたので、もう二度と相手にしないことに決め、会堂での説教はそれきりになりました。代わりに、クリスチャンたちを誘って、ツラノの講堂で別の集会を開き、毎日そこで語りました。 10 これが二年間も続いたので、アジヤ州に住む人たちは、ユダヤ人だろうが外国人だろうが、主の教えを聞かない人はほとんどいないほどでした。 11 しかもパウロは、神によって驚くべきすばらしい奇跡を行う力に恵まれたので、 12 彼の手ぬぐいや前かけを病人にかけるだけで、病気は治り、悪霊は出て行きました。
13 そこへ、町から町へと渡り歩く、ユダヤ人の魔よけ祈祷師の一行がエペソにやって来ました。彼らも自分たちで、試しに主イエスの名を使ってみようと、「パウロが伝えている、イエスによって命令する。出て行け！」と、まじないを唱えることにしました。 14 こんなことをしたのは、実は、ユダヤの祭司長スケワの七人の息子たちでした。 15 しかし、悪霊につかれた人に実際に試してみると、結果はさんざんでした。悪霊は平然と、「イエスなら知っている。パウロだって知っている。だが、おまえらは何者だ」と言い返してきたのです。 16 そればかりか、悪霊につかれた男が、一行のうちの二人に飛びかかり、なぐったり押さえつけたりしたので、彼らは裸にされ、重傷を負って、命からがらその家から逃げ出しました。
17 この出来事は、あっという間にエペソ中のユダヤ人やギリシヤ人に伝わり、町中が大きな恐れに包まれると同時に、主イエスの御名がほめたたえられました。 18-19 それまで魔術を行っていた信者たちも、そのことを告白し、呪文の本やお札を持って来て積み上げ、みんなの見ている前で焼き捨てました。ざっと見積もっても、銀貨五万枚にはなりそうな量でした。 20 このこと一つ取ってみても、この地方一帯が、どれだけ神のことばによって揺り動かされたかが、よくわかります。
エペソでの騒動
21 事件が一段落すると、パウロは聖霊の導きで、ギリシヤを回ってからエルサレムに帰ることにしました。あとでローマへも行くつもりでした。それをはっきりさせると、 22 まず助手のテモテとエラストとをギリシヤへやり、自分は、なおしばらくアジヤ州にとどまりました。
23 ちょうどそのころ、エペソで、キリスト教の伝道を巡って大騒動が持ち上がりました。 24 事件を起こしたのは、デメテリオという銀細工人です。この男は職人を大ぜい雇い、ギリシヤの女神アルテミスの神殿の模型作りを手広くやっていました。 25 この男が、自分のところの職人や同業者を集めて、こう演説をぶったのです。「皆さん。私たちは神殿の模型作りで食べています。 26 ところが、ご存じのように、あのパウロとかいう男が、手で造ったものは神じゃないなどと不届きなことを言って、大ぜいの人にふれ回っているのです。おかげで、こちらの売り上げはがた落ちです。エペソばかりか、この地方全体がそうなのです。 27 もちろん、商売が圧迫されるとか、もうけが減るとかいったことだけを言うつもりはありません。私が声を大にして言いたいことは、このままでは、偉大な女神アルテミス様の神殿のご威光が薄れ、この地方は言うにおよばず、世界中の人たちが礼拝してきた、すばらしい女神アルテミス様が忘れられてしまうということです。」
28 この演説で人々は興奮し、大声で、「偉大なのはエペソ人の女神アルテミス様だ！」と叫び始めました。
29 たちまち町中は大混乱に陥りました。人々は、パウロに同行したガイオとアリスタルコの二人をむりやり引っ立て、円形劇場へなだれ込みました。 30 これを見て自分も中に入ろうとするパウロを、弟子たちが必死に押しとどめました。 31 パウロの友人であるこの地方のローマの役人たちも使いの者をよこし、危険だから中に入らないようにと言ってきました。
32 一方、劇場の中では、それぞれが自分勝手なことをわめき立てるので、ほとんどの人は、なぜ集まっているのかさえわからない有様でした。
33 そうこうするうちに、ユダヤ人たちが、群衆の中からアレキサンデルという男を前に押しやりました。演説させようというのです。アレキサンデルは、進み出て、静かにするよう身ぶりで合図しました。 34 しかし、彼がユダヤ人だとわかると、群衆は前よりも激しく騒ぎだし、手のつけようがありません。「エペソ人の偉大な女神アルテミス様、ばんざーい！ ばんざーい！」と二時間も叫び続けました。
35 とうとう市長が乗り出し、やっとのことで、なんとか話ができるまでに騒ぎを鎮めました。「市民の皆さん。エペソが偉大なアルテミス様の宗教の本山であることは、だれもが知っています。アルテミス様のご神体は、天からわれわれのもとに下って来たのです。 36 それははっきりしているのだから、何を言われても、あわてることはありません。くれぐれも、軽はずみなことだけはしないようにしてください。 37 さて、ここへ連れて来た二人のことですが、女神の神殿から何かを盗み出したり、女神を冒瀆したりしたわけではありません。 38 もしデメテリオや職人たちが二人を訴えたいのなら、法廷があるのだから、裁判官の前に持ち出せばいいのです。何事も法律にのっとって進めてもらいたいものです。 39 また、それ以外のことで不平があれば、定例の市議会に提出すればすむことです。 40 とにかく、今日のこの騒動は、ローマ政府から暴動を起こした罪に問われるかもしれません。なにしろ訴える正当な理由が一つもないのだから、どうなっても責任は負えませんよ。」
41 こうして、市長は人々を解散させました。

Paul in Ephesus
19 While Apollos(A) was at Corinth,(B) Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus.(C) There he found some disciples 2 and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit(D) when[a] you believed?”
They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”
3 So Paul asked, “Then what baptism did you receive?”
“John’s baptism,” they replied.
4 Paul said, “John’s baptism(E) was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.”(F) 5 On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.(G) 6 When Paul placed his hands on them,(H) the Holy Spirit came on them,(I) and they spoke in tongues[b](J) and prophesied. 7 There were about twelve men in all.
8 Paul entered the synagogue(K) and spoke boldly there for three months, arguing persuasively about the kingdom of God.(L) 9 But some of them(M) became obstinate; they refused to believe and publicly maligned the Way.(N) So Paul left them. He took the disciples(O) with him and had discussions daily in the lecture hall of Tyrannus. 10 This went on for two years,(P) so that all the Jews and Greeks who lived in the province of Asia(Q) heard the word of the Lord.(R)
11 God did extraordinary miracles(S) through Paul, 12 so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured(T) and the evil spirits left them.
13 Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits(U) tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, “In the name of the Jesus(V) whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.” 14 Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. 15 One day the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?” 16 Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding.
17 When this became known to the Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus,(W) they were all seized with fear,(X) and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in high honor. 18 Many of those who believed now came and openly confessed what they had done. 19 A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas.[c] 20 In this way the word of the Lord(Y) spread widely and grew in power.(Z)
21 After all this had happened, Paul decided[d] to go to Jerusalem,(AA) passing through Macedonia(AB) and Achaia.(AC) “After I have been there,” he said, “I must visit Rome also.”(AD) 22 He sent two of his helpers,(AE) Timothy(AF) and Erastus,(AG) to Macedonia, while he stayed in the province of Asia(AH) a little longer.
The Riot in Ephesus
23 About that time there arose a great disturbance about the Way.(AI) 24 A silversmith named Demetrius, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought in a lot of business for the craftsmen there. 25 He called them together, along with the workers in related trades, and said: “You know, my friends, that we receive a good income from this business.(AJ) 26 And you see and hear how this fellow Paul has convinced and led astray large numbers of people here in Ephesus(AK) and in practically the whole province of Asia.(AL) He says that gods made by human hands are no gods at all.(AM) 27 There is danger not only that our trade will lose its good name, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be discredited; and the goddess herself, who is worshiped throughout the province of Asia and the world, will be robbed of her divine majesty.”
28 When they heard this, they were furious and began shouting: “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”(AN) 29 Soon the whole city was in an uproar. The people seized Gaius(AO) and Aristarchus,(AP) Paul’s traveling companions from Macedonia,(AQ) and all of them rushed into the theater together. 30 Paul wanted to appear before the crowd, but the disciples(AR) would not let him. 31 Even some of the officials of the province, friends of Paul, sent him a message begging him not to venture into the theater.
32 The assembly was in confusion: Some were shouting one thing, some another.(AS) Most of the people did not even know why they were there. 33 The Jews in the crowd pushed Alexander to the front, and they shouted instructions to him. He motioned(AT) for silence in order to make a defense before the people. 34 But when they realized he was a Jew, they all shouted in unison for about two hours: “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”(AU)
35 The city clerk quieted the crowd and said: “Fellow Ephesians,(AV) doesn’t all the world know that the city of Ephesus is the guardian of the temple of the great Artemis and of her image, which fell from heaven? 36 Therefore, since these facts are undeniable, you ought to calm down and not do anything rash. 37 You have brought these men here, though they have neither robbed temples(AW) nor blasphemed our goddess. 38 If, then, Demetrius and his fellow craftsmen(AX) have a grievance against anybody, the courts are open and there are proconsuls.(AY) They can press charges. 39 If there is anything further you want to bring up, it must be settled in a legal assembly. 40 As it is, we are in danger of being charged with rioting because of what happened today. In that case we would not be able to account for this commotion, since there is no reason for it.” 41 After he had said this, he dismissed the assembly.
