16 “Sinabi ko ito sa inyo upang huwag ninyong talikuran ang inyong pananalig sa akin. 2 Ititiwalag kayo sa mga sinagoga. Darating ang panahon na ang sinumang pumatay sa inyo ay mag-aakalang naglilingkod siya sa Diyos. 3 At gagawin nila ito sapagkat hindi nila ako kilala, ni ang Ama. 4 Subalit sinabi ko na ito sa inyo upang kapag dumating na ang oras na gagawin na nila ang mga ito, maaalala ninyo ang sinabi ko sa inyo tungkol sa kanila.”
Ang Gawain ng Espiritu Santo
“Hindi ko ito sinabi sa inyo noong una sapagkat kasama pa ninyo ako. 5 Ngunit ngayo'y pupunta na ako sa nagsugo sa akin at wala ni isa man sa inyo ang nagtatanong kung saan ako pupunta. 6 Ngayon sinabi ko na sa inyo, lubha naman kayong nalungkot. 7 Subalit sinasabi ko sa inyo ang katotohanan. Ang pag-alis ko'y sa ikabubuti ninyo, sapagkat hindi paparito sa inyo ang Patnubay kung hindi ako aalis. Ngunit pag-alis ko, isusugo ko siya sa inyo. 8 Pagdating niya ay kanyang patutunayan na mali ang mga taga-sanlibutan tungkol sa kasalanan, tungkol sa katuwiran at tungkol sa paghatol ng Diyos. 9 Patutunayan niya ang tungkol sa kanilang kasalanan sapagkat hindi sila naniwala sa akin. 10 Patutunayan niya ang tungkol sa katuwiran sapagkat ako'y pupunta sa Ama at hindi na ninyo makikita; 11 at ang tungkol sa paghatol ng Diyos, sapagkat hinatulan na ang pinuno ng sanlibutang ito.
12 “Marami pa akong sasabihin sa inyo subalit hindi pa ninyo kayang tanggapin sa ngayon. 13 Ngunit(A) pagdating ng Espiritu ng katotohanan, papatnubayan niya kayo sa buong katotohanan. Sapagkat ang sasabihin niya ay hindi mula sa kanyang sarili, kundi ang kanyang narinig; at ipahahayag niya sa inyo ang mga mangyayari sa hinaharap. 14 Pararangalan niya ako sapagkat tatanggapin ng Espiritu mula sa akin ang ipahahayag niya sa inyo. 15 Ang lahat ng sa Ama ay sa akin, kaya ko sinabing tatanggapin ng Espiritu ang mula sa akin at ipahahayag niya ito sa inyo.”
Kalungkutang Magiging Kagalakan
16 “Kaunting panahon na lamang at hindi na ninyo ako makikita, at pagkaraan ng kaunti pang panahon, ako'y inyong makikitang muli.”
17 Nag-usap-usap ang ilan sa kanyang mga alagad, “Ano kaya ang ibig niyang sabihin na kaunting panahon na lamang at hindi na natin siya makikita, at pagkaraan ng kaunti pang panahon ay makikita natin siyang muli? Sinabi pa niya, ‘Sapagkat ako'y pupunta sa Ama.’ 18 Ano kaya ang kahulugan ng, ‘kaunting panahon na lamang’? Hindi natin maunawaan ang kanyang sinasabi!”
19 Alam ni Jesus na ibig nilang magtanong, kaya't sinabi niya, “Nagtatanungan kayo tungkol sa sinabi kong ‘kaunting panahon na lamang at hindi na ninyo ako makikita, at pagkaraan ng kaunti pang panahon, ako'y makikita ninyong muli.’ 20 Pakatandaan ninyo: iiyak kayo at tatangis, ngunit magagalak ang sanlibutan. Labis kayong malulungkot, subalit ang inyong kalungkutan ay mapapalitan ng kagalakan.
21 “Kapag manganganak na ang isang babae, siya'y nalulungkot sapagkat dumating na ang oras ng kanyang paghihirap. Ngunit pagkapanganak niya, nakakalimutan na niya ang kanyang paghihirap; sapagkat nagagalak siya dahil sa pagsilang ng isang sanggol sa sanlibutan.
22 “Gayundin naman, nalulungkot kayo ngayon, ngunit muli ko kayong makikita, at mag-uumapaw sa inyong puso ang kagalakang hindi maaagaw ninuman. 23 Sa araw na iyon, hindi na ninyo kailangang humingi sa akin. Pakatandaan ninyo: anumang hingin ninyo sa Ama sa aking pangalan ay ibibigay niya sa inyo. 24 Hanggang ngayo'y wala pa kayong hinihingi sa kanya sa aking pangalan. Humingi kayo, at kayo'y tatanggap upang malubos ang inyong kagalakan.”
Pagtatagumpay sa Pangalan ni Jesus
25 “Ang mga ito'y sinabi ko sa inyo nang patalinghaga. Subalit darating ang panahong hindi na ako magsasalita sa inyo sa ganitong paraan; tuwiran ko nang sasabihin sa inyo ang tungkol sa Ama. 26 Sa araw na iyon ay hihingi kayo sa kanya sa aking pangalan, at hindi ko sinasabing ako mismo ang hihiling sa Ama para sa inyo. 27 Mahal kayo ng Ama sapagkat ako'y minahal ninyo at naniwala kayo na ako'y nagmula sa Diyos.[a] 28 Ako nga'y nanggaling sa Ama at naparito sa sanlibutan; ngayo'y aalis na ako sa sanlibutan at babalik na sa Ama.”
29 Sinabi ng kanyang mga alagad, “Ngayon po'y tuwiran na ang inyong pangungusap sa amin at hindi na patalinghaga! 30 Ngayon alam na po naming alam ninyo ang lahat ng bagay, at hindi na kailangang tanungin pa kayo ninuman. Dahil dito, naniniwala po kami na kayo'y mula sa Diyos.”
31 Sumagot si Jesus, “Talaga bang naniniwala na kayo? 32 Darating ang oras, at ngayon na nga, na magkakawatak-watak kayo. Magkakanya-kanya kayo ng lakad, at iiwan ninyo ako. Gayunma'y hindi ako nag-iisa sapagkat kasama ko ang Ama. 33 Sinabi ko ito sa inyo upang sa inyong pakikipag-isa sa akin ay magkaroon kayo ng kapayapaan. Magdaranas kayo ng kapighatian sa sanlibutang ito, ngunit tibayan ninyo ang inyong loob! Napagtagumpayan ko na ang sanlibutan!”

16 »Les he dicho todo esto para que no dejen de confiar en mí. 2 Ustedes van a ser expulsados de las sinagogas; y llegará el día en que cualquiera que los mate creerá que le está haciendo un favor a Dios. 3 Esa gente hará esto porque no me han conocido a mí, ni han conocido a Dios mi Padre. 4 Pero les digo esto para que, cuando suceda, recuerden que ya se lo había dicho.
El trabajo del Espíritu Santo
»Yo no les dije esto desde un principio porque estaba con ustedes, 5 pero ahora que regreso para estar con Dios mi Padre, ninguno de ustedes me pregunta a dónde voy. 6 Sin embargo, se han puesto muy tristes por lo que les dije. 7 En realidad, a ustedes les conviene que me vaya. Porque si no me voy, el Espíritu que los ayudará y consolará no vendrá; en cambio, si me voy, yo lo enviaré.
8-11 »Cuando el Espíritu venga, hará que los de este mundo se den cuenta de que no creer en mí es pecado. También les hará ver que yo no he hecho nada malo, y que soy inocente. Finalmente, el Espíritu mostrará que Dios ya ha juzgado al que gobierna este mundo, y que lo castigará. Yo, por mi parte, regreso a mi Padre, y ustedes ya no me verán.
12 »Tengo mucho que decirles, pero ahora no podrían entenderlo. 13 Cuando venga el Espíritu Santo, él les dirá lo que es la verdad y los guiará, para que siempre vivan en la verdad. Él no hablará por su propia cuenta, sino que les dirá lo que oiga de Dios el Padre, y les enseñará lo que está por suceder.
14 También les hará saber todo acerca de mí, y así me honrará. 15 Todo lo que es del Padre, también es mío; por eso dije que el Espíritu les hará saber todo acerca de mí.
16 »Dentro de poco tiempo ustedes ya no me verán. Pero un poco después volverán a verme.»
Serán muy felices
17 Algunos de los discípulos empezaron a preguntarse:
«¿Qué significa esto? Nos dice que dentro de poco ya no lo veremos, pero que un poco más tarde volveremos a verlo. Y también dice que todo esto sucede porque va a regresar a donde está Dios el Padre. 18 Pero ¿qué quiere decir con “dentro de poco”? ¡No entendemos nada de lo que está diciendo!»
19 Jesús se dio cuenta de que los discípulos querían hacerle preguntas. Entonces les dijo:
—¿Se están preguntando qué es lo que quise decir? 20 Les aseguro que ustedes se pondrán muy tristes y llorarán; en cambio, la gente que sólo piensa en las cosas del mundo se alegrará. Ustedes estarán tristes, pero luego se llenarán de alegría.
21 »Cuando una mujer embarazada está dando a luz, sufre en ese momento. Pero una vez que nace el bebé, la madre olvida todo el sufrimiento, y se alegra porque ha traído un niño al mundo. 22 Del mismo modo, ahora ustedes están tristes, pero yo volveré a verlos, y se pondrán tan felices que ya nadie les quitará esa alegría.
23 »Cuando venga ese día, ustedes ya no me preguntarán nada. Les aseguro que, por ser mis discípulos, mi Padre les dará todo lo que pidan. 24 Hasta ahora ustedes no han pedido nada en mi nombre. Háganlo, y Dios les dará lo que pidan; así serán completamente felices.
Jesús ha vencido al mundo
25 »Hasta ahora les he hablado por medio de ejemplos y comparaciones. Pero se acerca el momento en que hablaré claramente acerca de Dios el Padre, y ya no usaré más comparaciones. 26 Ya no hará falta que le ruegue a mi Padre por ustedes, sino que ustedes mismos le rogarán a él, porque son mis seguidores. 27 Dios los ama, porque ustedes me aman, y porque han creído que el Padre me envió. 28 Yo vine al mundo porque mi Padre me envió, y ahora dejo el mundo para volver a estar con él.
29 Los discípulos le dijeron:
—¡Ahora sí que estás hablando claramente, y no usas comparaciones! 30 No necesitas esperar a que alguien te pregunte, porque tú lo sabes todo. Por eso creemos que Dios te ha enviado.
31 Entonces Jesús les respondió:
—¿Así que ahora creen? 32 Pronto, muy pronto, todos ustedes huirán, cada uno por su lado, y me dejarán solo. Pero no estaré solo, porque Dios mi Padre está conmigo. 33 Les digo estas cosas para que estén unidos a mí y así sean felices de verdad. Pero tengan valor: yo he vencido a los poderes que gobiernan este mundo.

16 “All this(A) I have told you so that you will not fall away.(B) 2 They will put you out of the synagogue;(C) in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God.(D) 3 They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.(E) 4 I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember(F) that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you,(G) 5 but now I am going to him who sent me.(H) None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’(I) 6 Rather, you are filled with grief(J) because I have said these things. 7 But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate(K) will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.(L) 8 When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 about sin,(M) because people do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness,(N) because I am going to the Father,(O) where you can see me no longer; 11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world(P) now stands condemned.
12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.(Q) 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth,(R) comes, he will guide you into all the truth.(S) He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine.(T) That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”
The Disciples’ Grief Will Turn to Joy
16 Jesus went on to say, “In a little while(U) you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.”(V)
17 At this, some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,’(W) and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?”(X) 18 They kept asking, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand what he is saying.”
19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, “Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me’? 20 Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn(Y) while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.(Z) 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain(AA) because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief,(AB) but I will see you again(AC) and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.(AD) 23 In that day(AE) you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.(AF) 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive,(AG) and your joy will be complete.(AH)
25 “Though I have been speaking figuratively,(AI) a time is coming(AJ) when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name.(AK) I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me(AL) and have believed that I came from God.(AM) 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”(AN)
29 Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech.(AO) 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe(AP) that you came from God.”(AQ)
31 “Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. 32 “A time is coming(AR) and in fact has come when you will be scattered,(AS) each to your own home. You will leave me all alone.(AT) Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.(AU)
33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.(AV) In this world you will have trouble.(AW) But take heart! I have overcome(AX) the world.”
