Monumento conmemorativo
4 Cuando el pueblo terminó de cruzar el río, el Señor le dijo a Josué: 2-3 Elijan a doce hombres, uno de cada tribu de Israel y diles: tomen una piedra del lugar donde están parados los sacerdotes, en medio del Jordán, y llévenlas hasta el lugar donde acamparán esta noche.
4 Josué llamó a los doce hombres 5 y les dijo: «Vayan al centro del Jordán donde está el cofre. Cada uno de ustedes tomará una piedra y la sacará en hombros, doce en total, una por cada tribu. 6 Las usaremos para levantar un monumento a fin de que en el futuro, cuando sus hijos pregunten por qué está aquí este monumento, 7 puedan decirles: “Es para recordar que el río Jordán dejó de correr cuando el cofre de Dios lo cruzó”. El monumento será para el pueblo de Israel un recuerdo permanente de este asombroso milagro».
8 Enseguida los hombres hicieron como Josué les había ordenado. Sacaron doce piedras del río Jordán, una por cada tribu, como el Señor le había ordenado a Josué, y las llevaron al lugar donde iban a acampar durante la noche y levantaron un monumento. 9 Josué también levantó otro monumento de doce piedras en el centro del río, en el lugar donde estaban de pie los sacerdotes. Y están allí hasta el día de hoy.
10 Los sacerdotes que transportaban el cofre estuvieron en medio del río hasta que se cumplieron todas las órdenes que el Señor le había dado a Josué por medio de Moisés. Mientras tanto, el pueblo había cruzado el río. 11 Cuando todos habían pasado, el pueblo observó a los sacerdotes mientras transportaban el cofre y salían del río.
12-13 Los varones de las tribus de Rubén, Gad y la media tribu de Manasés, completamente armados como Moisés había ordenado, formados por cuarenta mil hombres, precedieron a las otras tribus del Señor en su marcha por las llanuras de Jericó.
14 En ese día el Señor engrandeció a Josué ante los ojos de todo Israel, y ellos lo respetaron todos los días de su vida de la misma manera que habían hecho con Moisés. 15 El Señor le dijo, entonces, a Josué: 16 «Diles a los sacerdotes que salgan del Jordán». 17 Entonces, Josué dio la orden, 18 y en cuanto los sacerdotes salieron del lecho del Jordán el agua comenzó a correr como de costumbre y se desbordaba por las orillas como antes. 19 Este milagro ocurrió el veinticinco de marzo. Ese día Israel cruzó el río Jordán y acampó en Guilgal al este de la ciudad de Jericó; 20 y allí se levantó el monumento con las doce piedras del río Jordán.
21 Josué explicó nuevamente el propósito de las piedras: «En el futuro, cuando sus descendientes pregunten “por qué están aquí estas piedras, y qué significan”, 22 ustedes les dirán que estas piedras están puestas aquí para recordarnos que toda la nación de Israel cruzó el río Jordán sobre tierra seca. 23 Les dirán que nuestro Dios secó el río delante de sus ojos y lo mantuvo seco hasta que todos cruzamos, como lo hizo antes con el Mar Rojo. 24 Él hizo esto para que todas las naciones de la tierra comprendan que el Señor es el Dios Todopoderoso. Por lo tanto, debemos adorarlo para siempre».
5 Cuando las naciones que estaban al oeste del río Jordán (los cananeos y los amorreos que vivían a lo largo de la costa del Mediterráneo) oyeron que el Señor había secado el río Jordán para que el pueblo de Israel pudiera cruzarlo, se les disipó completamente el valor y quedaron paralizados de temor.
Liberación del oprobio egipcio
2-3 El Señor entonces le dijo a Josué que apartara un día para circuncidar a toda la población masculina de Israel. El Señor les dio orden de hacer cuchillos de piedra con este propósito. El lugar donde se realizó el rito de la circuncisión fue denominado colina de los Prepucios. 4-5 Esta segunda ceremonia de circuncisión se realizó porque ninguno de los varones nacidos durante la peregrinación en el desierto habían sido circuncidados, a diferencia de quienes habían salido de Egipto, pero aquellos ya habían muerto. 6 Porque el pueblo de Israel había peregrinado en el desierto durante cuarenta años hasta que todos los hombres, que al salir de Egipto tenían edad militar, murieron. Estos no habían obedecido al Señor, y él juró que no los dejaría entrar en la tierra que había prometido a Israel, tierra de la que fluye leche y miel. 7 Así que Josué hizo circuncidar a los hijos de ellos, los cuales habían crecido para tomar el lugar de sus padres.
8-9 Y el Señor le dijo a Josué: «Hoy he quitado de ustedes la humillación de ser esclavos». Por esta razón el lugar donde se realizó esto se llamó Guilgal, y así se llama todavía. Después de la ceremonia todos descansaron en el campamento hasta que sus heridas sanaron.
Celebración de la Pascua
10 Mientras estaban acampados en Guilgal, en los llanos de Jericó, celebraron la Pascua durante la tarde del día catorce del mes. 11 Al día siguiente, comenzaron a comer de lo que sacaban de los huertos y campos sembrados e hicieron panes sin levadura. 12 Al otro día ya no hubo maná y jamás volvieron a verlo. Desde entonces comenzaron a vivir de lo que producía la tierra de Canaán.
El comandante del ejército del Señor
13 Un día que Josué recorría los alrededores de la ciudad de Jericó apareció un hombre junto a él con una espada desenvainada. Josué se dirigió a él y le preguntó:
―¿Eres amigo o enemigo?
14 ―Yo soy el comandante en jefe del ejército del Señor —respondió.
Josué cayó de rodillas delante de él, lo adoró y le dijo:
―Da tus órdenes a tu siervo, Señor.
15 ―Quítate el calzado —le ordenó el comandante—; porque este es terreno santo.
Y Josué obedeció.
La conquista de Jericó
6 Los habitantes de Jericó mantenían las puertas de la ciudad bien cerradas porque tenían miedo de los israelitas. Nadie podía salir ni entrar. Entonces el Señor le dijo a Josué: 2 «Jericó, su rey, y todos sus guerreros ya están derrotados, porque los he entregado en tus manos. 3 Los hombres que puedan pelear caminarán alrededor de la ciudad una vez al día durante seis días. 4 Lo harán con siete sacerdotes que caminarán delante del cofre, cada uno con una trompeta hecha de cuerno de carnero. En el séptimo día caminarán siete veces alrededor de la ciudad, y los sacerdotes irán tocando sus trompetas. 5 Entonces, cuando ellos den un trompetazo largo y estridente, todo el pueblo dará un gran grito y las murallas de la ciudad caerán; entonces entrarán en la ciudad desde todas las direcciones».
6-9 Josué reunió a los sacerdotes y les dio las instrucciones: «Los hombres armados irán a la cabeza de la procesión, seguidos por los siete sacerdotes que tocarán continuamente sus trompetas. Detrás de ellos irán los sacerdotes que transportan el cofre, seguidos por una retaguardia».
10 Josué entonces ordenó: «¡Que haya completo silencio y no se oiga otra cosa que el sonido de las trompetas! Ninguna otra palabra saldrá de su boca hasta que les ordene gritar; y entonces, ¡griten!».
11 El cofre fue transportado alrededor de la ciudad ese día, después de lo cual cada uno regresó al campamento a pasar la noche allí. 12-14 A la madrugada del día siguiente se levantaron, y marchando en el mismo orden del día anterior, rodearon la ciudad y regresaron nuevamente al campamento. Siguieron haciéndolo así durante seis días. 15 Al amanecer del séptimo día comenzaron nuevamente, pero esta vez dieron siete vueltas alrededor de la ciudad en lugar de una. 16 La séptima vez, mientras los sacerdotes tocaban sus trompetas, Josué ordenó a la gente: «¡Griten! ¡El Señor nos ha entregado la ciudad!».
17 Él les había dicho previamente: «Mátenlos a todos, menos a Rajab la prostituta y a los que estén en su casa, porque ella protegió a nuestros espías. 18 No tomen botín porque todo debe ser destruido. Si no lo hacen, toda la nación de Israel sufrirá un gran desastre. 19 Pero todo el oro, la plata y los utensilios de bronce y de hierro serán consagrados al Señor y serán llevados a su tesorería».
20 Cuando el pueblo oyó el sonido de las trompetas, gritaron lo más fuerte que pudieron. Repentinamente las murallas de Jericó se derrumbaron delante de ellos, y el pueblo de Israel entró en la ciudad desde todas direcciones y la capturaron. 21 Destruyeron cuanto había en ella: hombres, mujeres, ancianos y jóvenes; bueyes, ovejas y burros, en una palabra, todo. 22 Entonces Josué les dijo a los espías: «Cumplan lo prometido. Vayan y rescaten a la prostituta y a todos los que están con ella». 23 Los jóvenes la encontraron y la sacaron, juntamente con su padre, su madre, sus hermanos, posesiones y todos los parientes que estaban con ella, y los instalaron fuera del campamento de Israel. 24 Luego quemaron la ciudad y todo lo que había en ella, salvo lo que era de plata, oro, bronce y hierro, que fue guardado para entregarlo en la tesorería del Señor. 25 De esta manera Josué salvó a Rajab la prostituta y a los familiares que estaban con ella en su casa. Todavía viven entre los israelitas porque ella escondió a los espías que Josué envió a Jericó.
26 Entonces Josué lanzó una terrible maldición sobre cualquiera que reedificara la ciudad de Jericó. Advirtió que cuando fueran puestos los cimientos, el hijo mayor del constructor moriría, y cuando fueran colocadas las puertas moriría el hijo menor.
27 El Señor estaba con Josué, y su nombre se hizo famoso en todas partes.
El pecado de Acán
7 Hubo un gran pecado entre los israelitas. Alguien desobedeció el mandato de Dios de destruir todo salvo lo que estaba reservado para los tesoros del Señor. Acán, hijo de Carmí, nieto de Zabdí y bisnieto de Zera, de la tribu de Judá, tomó parte del botín para sí, y el Señor se enojó con toda la nación a causa de esto.
La derrota en Hai
2 Poco después de la derrota de Jericó, Josué envió a sus hombres a reconocer la ciudad de Hai que queda al oriente de Betel. 3 A su regreso le dijeron a Josué: «Es una ciudad pequeña y bastará con dos o tres mil hombres para destruirla; no es necesario que vayamos todos nosotros a tomarla».
4 Mandaron, pues, a unos tres mil soldados a tomarla, y fueron completamente derrotados. 5 Unos treinta y seis israelitas murieron durante el ataque, y muchos otros murieron mientras huían perseguidos por los hombres de Hai por toda la bajada hasta Sebarim. El pueblo israelita se paralizó de temor ante estos acontecimientos. 6 Josué y los ancianos de Israel rasgaron su ropa y se postraron delante del cofre del Señor echando polvo sobre sus cabezas. 7 Josué clamó al Señor:
―Oh Señor, ¿por qué nos hiciste cruzar el río Jordán si ibas a permitir que los amorreos nos dieran muerte? ¿Por qué no nos quedamos en la otra orilla? 8 Oh Señor, ¿qué voy a hacer ahora que Israel ha huido delante de sus enemigos? 9 Porque cuando los cananeos y los demás pueblos cercanos lo oigan, nos rodearán, nos atacarán y nos exterminarán. Y cuando esto ocurra, ¿qué habrá de la honra que merece tu gran nombre?
10 Pero el Señor le dijo a Josué:
―Levántate, ¿por qué estás postrado? 11 Israel ha pecado y ha desobedecido mis órdenes, y ha tomado botín cuando yo les dije que no lo tomaran. No solamente lo han tomado, sino que han mentido acerca de ello y lo han escondido entre sus pertenencias. 12 Por esta razón Israel está siendo derrotado, por esta razón tus hombres están huyendo delante de sus enemigos. ¡Están malditos! No permaneceré con ustedes a menos que se libren completamente de este pecado. 13 Levántate y dile al pueblo: Cada uno de ustedes debe pasar por los ritos de la purificación en preparación para mañana, porque el Señor su Dios dice que alguien ha robado lo que a él le pertenecía y no podremos derrotar a nuestros enemigos hasta que acabemos con este pecado. 14 Mañana por la mañana deben comparecer por tribus y el Señor señalará cuál es la tribu culpable. Luego la tribu se presentará por clanes y el Señor señalará cuál es el clan al que pertenece el hombre culpable. Luego el clan comparecerá por familias y entonces señalará la familia culpable y, por último, cada miembro de esa familia comparecerá por sí solo. 15 El que haya robado lo que pertenece al Señor será quemado junto con todo lo que tiene, porque ha violado el pacto del Señor y ha traído calamidades sobre Israel.
El castigo de Acán
16 Al día siguiente, siendo muy temprano, Josué presentó las tribus de Israel delante del Señor y fue señalada la tribu de Judá. 17 Entonces se presentaron los clanes de Judá y fue señalado el clan de Zera. Luego se presentaron las familias de aquel clan delante del Señor y fue apartada la familia de Zabdí. 18 Los hombres de la familia de Zabdí se presentaron uno por uno y Acán fue señalado como culpable del pecado. 19 Josué entonces le dijo a Acán:
―Hijo mío, da gloria al Dios de Israel y haz tu confesión. Dime lo que has hecho.
20 Acán contestó:
―He pecado contra el Señor, el Dios de Israel. 21 Vi un hermoso manto importado de Babilonia, casi dos kilos y medio de plata y una barra de oro como de seiscientos gramos. Sentí tanto deseo de poseer todo aquello que lo tomé y lo escondí en la tierra debajo de mi tienda. Allí están, y la plata está debajo de todo.
22 Josué envió a algunos hombres a buscar el botín. Corrieron a la tienda y hallaron las cosas robadas donde Acán había dicho, y la plata estaba debajo de todo. 23 Trajeron todo a Josué y lo dejaron en tierra frente al Señor. 24 Josué y todos los israelitas tomaron a Acán, la plata, el manto; el oro, sus hijos, sus hijas, sus bueyes, sus burros, sus ovejas, la tienda y todo lo que él tenía, y lo llevaron al valle de Acor. 25 Allí Josué dijo a Acán:
―¿Por qué has traído esta calamidad sobre nosotros? Ahora el Señor traerá calamidad sobre ti.
Los hombres de Israel los apedrearon y luego quemaron sus cuerpos 26 e hicieron un gran montón de piedras sobre ellos. Las piedras todavía están allí hasta el día de hoy, y ese lugar aún es conocido como el valle de la Calamidad. Entonces el Señor calmó su ira.

4 When the whole nation had finished crossing the Jordan,(A) the Lord said to Joshua, 2 “Choose twelve men(B) from among the people, one from each tribe, 3 and tell them to take up twelve stones(C) from the middle of the Jordan,(D) from right where the priests are standing, and carry them over with you and put them down at the place where you stay tonight.(E)”
4 So Joshua called together the twelve men(F) he had appointed from the Israelites, one from each tribe, 5 and said to them, “Go over before the ark of the Lord your God into the middle of the Jordan.(G) Each of you is to take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, 6 to serve as a sign(H) among you. In the future, when your children(I) ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’(J) 7 tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off(K) before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial(L) to the people of Israel forever.”
8 So the Israelites did as Joshua commanded them. They took twelve stones(M) from the middle of the Jordan,(N) according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, as the Lord had told Joshua;(O) and they carried them over with them to their camp, where they put them down. 9 Joshua set up the twelve stones(P) that had been[a] in the middle of the Jordan at the spot where the priests who carried the ark of the covenant had stood. And they are there to this day.(Q)
10 Now the priests who carried the ark remained standing in the middle of the Jordan until everything the Lord had commanded Joshua was done by the people, just as Moses had directed Joshua. The people hurried over, 11 and as soon as all of them had crossed, the ark of the Lord and the priests came to the other side while the people watched. 12 The men of Reuben,(R) Gad(S) and the half-tribe of Manasseh(T) crossed over, ready for battle, in front of the Israelites,(U) as Moses had directed them.(V) 13 About forty thousand armed for battle(W) crossed over(X) before the Lord to the plains of Jericho for war.
14 That day the Lord exalted(Y) Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they stood in awe of him all the days of his life, just as they had stood in awe of Moses.
15 Then the Lord said to Joshua, 16 “Command the priests carrying the ark of the covenant law(Z) to come up out of the Jordan.”
17 So Joshua commanded the priests, “Come up out of the Jordan.”
18 And the priests came up out of the river carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord. No sooner had they set their feet on the dry ground than the waters of the Jordan returned to their place(AA) and ran at flood stage(AB) as before.
19 On the tenth day of the first month the people went up from the Jordan and camped at Gilgal(AC) on the eastern border of Jericho. 20 And Joshua set up at Gilgal the twelve stones(AD) they had taken out of the Jordan. 21 He said to the Israelites, “In the future when your descendants ask their parents, ‘What do these stones mean?’(AE) 22 tell them, ‘Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground.’(AF) 23 For the Lord your God dried up the Jordan before you until you had crossed over. The Lord your God did to the Jordan what he had done to the Red Sea[b] when he dried it up before us until we had crossed over.(AG) 24 He did this so that all the peoples of the earth might know(AH) that the hand of the Lord is powerful(AI) and so that you might always fear the Lord your God.(AJ)”
5 Now when all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the Canaanite kings along the coast(AK) heard how the Lord had dried up the Jordan before the Israelites until they[c] had crossed over, their hearts melted in fear(AL) and they no longer had the courage to face the Israelites.
Circumcision and Passover at Gilgal
2 At that time the Lord said to Joshua, “Make flint knives(AM) and circumcise(AN) the Israelites again.” 3 So Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the Israelites at Gibeath Haaraloth.[d]
4 Now this is why he did so: All those who came out of Egypt—all the men of military age(AO)—died in the wilderness on the way after leaving Egypt.(AP) 5 All the people that came out had been circumcised, but all the people born in the wilderness during the journey from Egypt had not. 6 The Israelites had moved about in the wilderness(AQ) forty years(AR) until all the men who were of military age when they left Egypt had died, since they had not obeyed the Lord. For the Lord had sworn to them that they would not see the land he had solemnly promised their ancestors to give us,(AS) a land flowing with milk and honey.(AT) 7 So he raised up their sons in their place, and these were the ones Joshua circumcised. They were still uncircumcised because they had not been circumcised on the way. 8 And after the whole nation had been circumcised, they remained where they were in camp until they were healed.(AU)
9 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.” So the place has been called Gilgal[e](AV) to this day.
10 On the evening of the fourteenth day of the month,(AW) while camped at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho, the Israelites celebrated the Passover.(AX) 11 The day after the Passover, that very day, they ate some of the produce of the land:(AY) unleavened bread(AZ) and roasted grain.(BA) 12 The manna stopped the day after[f] they ate this food from the land; there was no longer any manna for the Israelites, but that year they ate the produce of Canaan.(BB)
The Fall of Jericho
13 Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man(BC) standing in front of him with a drawn sword(BD) in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?”
14 “Neither,” he replied, “but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.” Then Joshua fell facedown(BE) to the ground(BF) in reverence, and asked him, “What message does my Lord[g] have for his servant?”
15 The commander of the Lord’s army replied, “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.”(BG) And Joshua did so.
6 Now the gates of Jericho(BH) were securely barred because of the Israelites. No one went out and no one came in.
2 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “See, I have delivered(BI) Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men. 3 March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days. 4 Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams’ horns(BJ) in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets.(BK) 5 When you hear them sound a long blast(BL) on the trumpets, have the whole army give a loud shout;(BM) then the wall of the city will collapse and the army will go up, everyone straight in.”
6 So Joshua son of Nun called the priests and said to them, “Take up the ark of the covenant of the Lord and have seven priests carry trumpets in front of it.”(BN) 7 And he ordered the army, “Advance(BO)! March around the city, with an armed guard going ahead of the ark(BP) of the Lord.”
8 When Joshua had spoken to the people, the seven priests carrying the seven trumpets before the Lord went forward, blowing their trumpets, and the ark of the Lord’s covenant followed them. 9 The armed guard marched ahead of the priests who blew the trumpets, and the rear guard(BQ) followed the ark. All this time the trumpets were sounding. 10 But Joshua had commanded the army, “Do not give a war cry, do not raise your voices, do not say a word until the day I tell you to shout. Then shout!(BR)” 11 So he had the ark of the Lord carried around the city, circling it once. Then the army returned to camp and spent the night there.
12 Joshua got up early the next morning and the priests took up the ark of the Lord. 13 The seven priests carrying the seven trumpets went forward, marching before the ark of the Lord and blowing the trumpets. The armed men went ahead of them and the rear guard followed the ark of the Lord, while the trumpets kept sounding. 14 So on the second day they marched around the city once and returned to the camp. They did this for six days.
15 On the seventh day, they got up at daybreak and marched around the city seven times in the same manner, except that on that day they circled the city seven times.(BS) 16 The seventh time around, when the priests sounded the trumpet blast, Joshua commanded the army, “Shout! For the Lord has given you the city!(BT) 17 The city and all that is in it are to be devoted[h](BU) to the Lord. Only Rahab the prostitute(BV) and all who are with her in her house shall be spared, because she hid(BW) the spies we sent. 18 But keep away from the devoted things,(BX) so that you will not bring about your own destruction by taking any of them. Otherwise you will make the camp of Israel liable to destruction(BY) and bring trouble(BZ) on it. 19 All the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron(CA) are sacred to the Lord and must go into his treasury.”
20 When the trumpets sounded,(CB) the army shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the men gave a loud shout,(CC) the wall collapsed; so everyone charged straight in, and they took the city.(CD) 21 They devoted(CE) the city to the Lord and destroyed(CF) with the sword every living thing in it—men and women, young and old, cattle, sheep and donkeys.
22 Joshua said to the two men(CG) who had spied out(CH) the land, “Go into the prostitute’s house and bring her out and all who belong to her, in accordance with your oath to her.(CI)” 23 So the young men who had done the spying went in and brought out Rahab, her father and mother, her brothers and sisters and all who belonged to her.(CJ) They brought out her entire family and put them in a place outside the camp of Israel.
24 Then they burned the whole city(CK) and everything in it, but they put the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron(CL) into the treasury of the Lord’s house.(CM) 25 But Joshua spared(CN) Rahab the prostitute,(CO) with her family and all who belonged to her, because she hid the men Joshua had sent as spies to Jericho(CP)—and she lives among the Israelites to this day.
26 At that time Joshua pronounced this solemn oath:(CQ) “Cursed(CR) before the Lord is the one who undertakes to rebuild this city, Jericho:
“At the cost of his firstborn son
he will lay its foundations;
at the cost of his youngest
he will set up its gates.”(CS)
27 So the Lord was with Joshua,(CT) and his fame spread(CU) throughout the land.
Achan’s Sin
7 But the Israelites were unfaithful in regard to the devoted things[i];(CV) Achan(CW) son of Karmi, the son of Zimri,[j] the son of Zerah,(CX) of the tribe of Judah,(CY) took some of them. So the Lord’s anger burned(CZ) against Israel.(DA)
2 Now Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai,(DB) which is near Beth Aven(DC) to the east of Bethel,(DD) and told them, “Go up and spy out(DE) the region.” So the men went up and spied out Ai.
3 When they returned to Joshua, they said, “Not all the army will have to go up against Ai. Send two or three thousand men to take it and do not weary the whole army, for only a few people live there.” 4 So about three thousand went up; but they were routed by the men of Ai,(DF) 5 who killed about thirty-six(DG) of them. They chased the Israelites from the city gate as far as the stone quarries and struck them down on the slopes. At this the hearts of the people melted in fear(DH) and became like water.
6 Then Joshua tore his clothes(DI) and fell facedown(DJ) to the ground before the ark of the Lord, remaining there till evening.(DK) The elders of Israel(DL) did the same, and sprinkled dust(DM) on their heads. 7 And Joshua said, “Alas, Sovereign Lord, why(DN) did you ever bring this people across the Jordan to deliver us into the hands of the Amorites to destroy us?(DO) If only we had been content to stay on the other side of the Jordan! 8 Pardon your servant, Lord. What can I say, now that Israel has been routed by its enemies? 9 The Canaanites and the other people of the country will hear about this and they will surround us and wipe out our name from the earth.(DP) What then will you do for your own great name?(DQ)”
10 The Lord said to Joshua, “Stand up! What are you doing down on your face? 11 Israel has sinned;(DR) they have violated my covenant,(DS) which I commanded them to keep. They have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen, they have lied,(DT) they have put them with their own possessions.(DU) 12 That is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies;(DV) they turn their backs(DW) and run(DX) because they have been made liable to destruction.(DY) I will not be with you anymore(DZ) unless you destroy whatever among you is devoted to destruction.
13 “Go, consecrate the people. Tell them, ‘Consecrate yourselves(EA) in preparation for tomorrow; for this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: There are devoted things among you, Israel. You cannot stand against your enemies until you remove them.
14 “‘In the morning, present(EB) yourselves tribe by tribe. The tribe the Lord chooses(EC) shall come forward clan by clan; the clan the Lord chooses shall come forward family by family; and the family the Lord chooses shall come forward man by man. 15 Whoever is caught with the devoted things(ED) shall be destroyed by fire,(EE) along with all that belongs to him.(EF) He has violated the covenant(EG) of the Lord and has done an outrageous thing in Israel!’”(EH)
16 Early the next morning Joshua had Israel come forward by tribes, and Judah was chosen. 17 The clans of Judah came forward, and the Zerahites were chosen.(EI) He had the clan of the Zerahites come forward by families, and Zimri was chosen. 18 Joshua had his family come forward man by man, and Achan son of Karmi, the son of Zimri, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah,(EJ) was chosen.(EK)
19 Then Joshua said to Achan, “My son, give glory(EL) to the Lord, the God of Israel, and honor him. Tell(EM) me what you have done; do not hide it from me.”
20 Achan replied, “It is true! I have sinned against the Lord, the God of Israel. This is what I have done: 21 When I saw in the plunder(EN) a beautiful robe from Babylonia,[k] two hundred shekels[l] of silver and a bar of gold weighing fifty shekels,[m] I coveted(EO) them and took them. They are hidden in the ground inside my tent, with the silver underneath.”
22 So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent, and there it was, hidden in his tent, with the silver underneath. 23 They took the things from the tent, brought them to Joshua and all the Israelites and spread them out before the Lord.
24 Then Joshua, together with all Israel, took Achan son of Zerah, the silver, the robe, the gold bar, his sons(EP) and daughters, his cattle, donkeys and sheep, his tent and all that he had, to the Valley of Achor.(EQ) 25 Joshua said, “Why have you brought this trouble(ER) on us? The Lord will bring trouble on you today.”
Then all Israel stoned him,(ES) and after they had stoned the rest, they burned them.(ET) 26 Over Achan they heaped(EU) up a large pile of rocks, which remains to this day.(EV) Then the Lord turned from his fierce anger.(EW) Therefore that place has been called the Valley of Achor[n](EX) ever since.
