Prólogo
1 En el país de Uz vivía un hombre llamado Job. Era un hombre recto, que amaba y honraba a Dios y no hacía ningún mal a nadie. 2 Tenía siete hijos y tres hijas. 3 Era el hombre más rico del oriente, pues tenía siete mil ovejas, tres mil camellos, quinientas yuntas de bueyes, quinientas asnas y muchísimos criados. 4 Todos los días sus hijos se turnaban para hacer banquetes en sus casas, e invitaban a sus hermanas para que se les unieran a comer y beber. 5 Una vez terminados los banquetes, Job los mandaba a purificarse; se levantaba muy temprano y le ofrecía un sacrificio al Señor, de acuerdo al número de sus hijos, pues pensaba que tal vez en su interior ellos habrían ofendido al Señor. Esto lo hacía todos los días.
6 Pero un día se presentaron ante el Señor sus servidores, y entre ellos llegó también Satanás. 7 Cuando el Señor lo vio, le preguntó:
«¿De dónde vienes?»
Y Satanás le contestó:
«Vengo de andar recorriendo la tierra.»
8 Entonces el Señor le preguntó:
«¿Y no has pensado en mi siervo Job? ¿Acaso has visto alguien con una conducta tan intachable como él? ¡No le hace ningún mal a nadie, y es temeroso de Dios!»
9 Pero Satanás le respondió al Señor:
«¿Y acaso Job teme a Dios sin recibir nada a cambio? 10 ¿Acaso no lo proteges, a él y a su familia, y a todo lo que tiene? Tú bendices todo lo que hace, y aumentas sus riquezas en esta tierra. 11 Pero pon tu mano sobre todo lo que tiene, y verás cómo blasfema contra ti, y en tu propia cara.»(A)
12 Entonces el Señor le respondió a Satanás:
«Ahí está Job. Haz lo que quieras con todas sus riquezas. Pero te prohíbo que a él le hagas daño.»
Y dicho esto, Satanás salió de la presencia del Señor.
13 Un día, mientras los hijos y las hijas de Job comían y bebían en la casa del hermano mayor, 14 llegó un mensajero a la casa de Job y le dijo:
«Estábamos arando el campo con los bueyes, y las asnas pacían cerca, 15 cuando de pronto llegaron los sabeos y nos atacaron, y mataron a los pastores y se llevaron los animales. Sólo yo pude escapar para traerte la noticia.»
16 Todavía estaba hablando el mensajero, cuando llegó otro y dijo:
«Dios permitió que del cielo cayera un fuego destructor, que fulminó a tus ovejas y a los pastores. ¡Todo lo consumió! Sólo yo pude escapar para traerte la noticia.»
17 Enseguida llegó otro mensajero con otra mala noticia:
«Tres escuadrones de caldeos llegaron y atacaron a los criados, y se llevaron los camellos. Sólo yo pude escapar para traerte la noticia.»
18 Aún no terminaba de hablar este hombre, cuando llegó otro con esta noticia:
«Tus hijos y tus hijas estaban comiendo y bebiendo en casa de su hermano mayor, 19 cuando del desierto llegó un fuerte tornado, y azotó la casa, y ésta se derrumbó sobre tus hijos y los mató. Sólo yo pude escapar para darte la noticia.»
20 Entonces Job se levantó y se rasgó las vestiduras, se rapó la cabeza en señal de luto, y con el rostro en tierra adoró al Señor, 21 mientras decía:
«Desnudo salí del vientre de mi madre, y desnudo volveré al sepulcro. El Señor me dio, y el Señor me quitó. ¡Bendito sea el nombre del Señor!»
22 Y en todo esto Job no pecó ni le atribuyó al Señor ninguna mala intención.

Dios permite que Job caiga en la miseria
1 En la región de Us había un hombre llamado Job, que vivía una vida recta y sin tacha, y que era un fiel servidor de Dios, cuidadoso de no hacer mal a nadie. 2 Job tenía siete hijos y tres hijas, 3 y era dueño de siete mil ovejas, tres mil camellos, quinientas yuntas de bueyes y quinientas asnas. Tenía también un gran número de esclavos. Era el hombre más rico de todo el oriente.
4 Los hijos de Job acostumbraban celebrar banquetes en casa de cada uno de ellos, por turno, y siempre invitaban a sus tres hermanas. 5 Terminados los días del banquete, Job llamaba a sus hijos y, levantándose de mañana, ofrecía holocaustos por cada uno de ellos, para purificarlos de su pecado. Esto lo hacía Job siempre, pensando que sus hijos podían haber pecado maldiciendo a Dios en su interior.
6 Un día en que debían presentarse ante el Señor sus servidores celestiales, se presentó también el ángel acusador entre ellos. 7 El Señor le preguntó:
—¿De dónde vienes?
Y el acusador contestó:
—He andado recorriendo la tierra de un lado a otro.
8 Entonces le dijo el Señor:
—¿Te has fijado en mi siervo Job? No hay nadie en la tierra como él, que me sirva tan fielmente y viva una vida tan recta y sin tacha, cuidando de no hacer mal a nadie.
9 Pero el acusador respondió:
—Pues no de balde te sirve con tanta fidelidad. 10 Tú no dejas que nadie lo toque, ni a él ni a su familia ni a nada de lo que tiene; tú bendices todo lo que hace, y él es el hombre más rico en ganado de todo el país. 11 Pero quítale todo lo que tiene y verás cómo te maldice en tu propia cara.
12 El Señor respondió al acusador:
—Está bien. Haz lo que quieras con todas las cosas de Job, con tal de que a él mismo no le hagas ningún daño.
Entonces el acusador se retiró de la presencia del Señor.
13 Un día, mientras los hijos y las hijas de Job estaban celebrando un banquete en casa del hermano mayor, 14 un hombre llegó a casa de Job y le dio esta noticia:
—Estábamos arando el campo con los bueyes, y las asnas estaban pastando cerca; 15 de repente llegaron los sabeos, y se robaron el ganado y mataron a cuchillo a los hombres. Sólo yo pude escapar para venir a avisarte.
16 Aún no había terminado de hablar aquel hombre, cuando llegó otro y dijo:
—Cayó un rayo y mató a los pastores y las ovejas. Sólo yo pude escapar para venir a avisarte.
17 Aún no había terminado de hablar ese hombre, cuando llegó un tercero y dijo:
—Tres grupos de caldeos nos atacaron y se robaron los camellos, y mataron a cuchillo a los hombres. Sólo yo pude escapar para venir a avisarte.
18 Aún no había terminado de hablar este hombre, cuando llegó uno más y dijo:
—Tus hijos y tus hijas estaban celebrando un banquete en la casa de tu hijo mayor, 19 cuando de pronto un viento del desierto vino y sacudió la casa por los cuatro costados, derrumbándola sobre tus hijos. Todos ellos murieron. Sólo yo pude escapar para venir a avisarte.
20 Entonces Job se levantó, y lleno de dolor se rasgó la ropa, se rapó la cabeza y se inclinó en actitud de adoración. 21 Entonces dijo:
—Desnudo vine a este mundo, y desnudo saldré de él. El Señor me lo dio todo, y el Señor me lo quitó; ¡bendito sea el nombre del Señor!
22 Así pues, a pesar de todo, Job no pecó ni dijo nada malo contra Dios.

Job and His Family
1 There was a man in the country of Uz(A) named Job.(B) He was a man of perfect integrity,(C) who feared God and turned away from evil.(D) 2 He had seven sons and three daughters. 3 His estate included 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, 500 female donkeys, and a very large number of servants. Job was the greatest man among all the people of the east.
4 His sons used to take turns having banquets at their homes. They would send an invitation to their three sisters to eat and drink with them. 5 Whenever a round of banqueting was over, Job would send for his children and purify them, rising early in the morning to offer burnt offerings for[a] all of them. For Job thought: Perhaps my children have sinned, having cursed God in their hearts. This was Job’s regular practice.
Satan’s First Test of Job
6 One day the sons of God(E) came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan[b] also came with them. 7 The Lord asked Satan, “Where have you come from?”
“From roaming through the earth,”(F) Satan answered Him, “and walking around on it.”
8 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? No one else on earth is like him, a man of perfect integrity, who fears God and turns away from evil.”
9 Satan answered the Lord, “Does Job fear God for nothing? 10 Haven’t You placed a hedge around(G) him, his household, and everything he owns? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. 11 But stretch out Your hand and strike(H) everything he owns, and he will surely curse You to Your face.”
12 “Very well,” the Lord told Satan, “everything he owns is in your power. However, you must not lay a hand on Job himself.” So Satan left the Lord’s presence.
13 One day when Job’s sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, 14 a messenger came to Job and reported: “While the oxen were plowing and the donkeys grazing nearby, 15 the Sabeans(I) swooped down and took them away. They struck down the servants with the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
16 He was still speaking when another messenger came and reported: “A lightning storm[c] struck from heaven.(J) It burned up the sheep and the servants and devoured them, and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
17 That messenger was still speaking when yet another came and reported: “The Chaldeans formed three bands, made a raid on the camels, and took them away. They struck down the servants with the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
18 He was still speaking when another messenger came and reported: “Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house. 19 Suddenly a powerful wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on the young people so that they died, and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
20 Then Job stood up, tore(K) his robe, and shaved(L) his head.[d] He fell to the ground and worshiped, 21 saying:
Naked I came from my mother’s womb,(M)
and naked I will leave this life.[e](N)
The Lord gives, and the Lord takes away.
Praise the name of Yahweh.(O)
22 Throughout all this Job did not sin or blame God for anything.[f](P)

Job Was Greatest of the Sons of the East
1 There was a man in the (A)land of Uz whose name was (B)Job; and that man was (C)blameless, upright, (D)fearing God, and (E)turning away from evil. 2 (F)Seven sons and three daughters were born to him. 3 (G)His possessions also were 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 pairs of oxen, 500 female donkeys, and very many servants; and that man was (H)the greatest of all the sons of the east. 4 His sons used to go and hold a feast in the house of each one on his day, and they would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. 5 Now it happened when the days of feasting had completed their cycle, that Job would send and set them apart as holy. And he would rise up early in the morning and offer (I)burnt offerings according to the number of them all; for Job said, “(J)Perhaps my sons have sinned and [a](K)cursed God in their hearts.” Thus Job did continually.
All Job Has Is in Satan’s Hand
6 (L)Now it was the day that the (M)sons of God came to stand before [b]Yahweh, and [c]Satan also came among them. 7 And Yahweh said to Satan, “From where do you come?” Then Satan answered Yahweh and said, “(N)From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it.” 8 Then Yahweh said to Satan, “Have you set your heart upon (O)My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, (P)a blameless and upright man, [d]fearing God and turning away from evil.” 9 And (Q)Satan answered Yahweh and said, “Does Job [e]fear God without cause? 10 (R)Have You not made a hedge about him and his house and all that he has, on every side? (S)You have blessed the work of his hands, and his (T)possessions have increased in the land. 11 (U)But send forth Your hand now and (V)touch all that he has; he will surely curse You to Your face.” 12 Then Yahweh said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your hand, only do not send forth your hand toward him.” So Satan went out from the presence of Yahweh.
Messengers Speak of the Fire of God
13 Now it happened that on the day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their brother, the firstborn, 14 a messenger came to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the [f]donkeys feeding beside them, 15 and [g]the (W)Sabeans fell upon them and took them. They also struck down the young men with the edge of the sword, and [h]I alone have escaped to tell you.” 16 While this one was still speaking, another also came and said, “(X)The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the young men and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” 17 While this one was still speaking, another also came and said, “The (Y)Chaldeans set up three companies and made a raid on the camels and took them and struck down the young men with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” 18 While this one was still speaking, another also came and said, “Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their brother, the firstborn, 19 and behold, a great wind came from across the wilderness and touched the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young people, and they died, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”
20 Then Job arose and (Z)tore his robe and shaved his head, and he fell to the ground and worshiped. 21 And he said,
“(AA)Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
And naked I shall return there.
(AB)Yahweh gave, and Yahweh has taken away.
Blessed be the name of Yahweh.”
22 (AC)Through all this Job did not sin, nor did he give offense to God.

Prologue
1 In the land of Uz(A) there lived a man whose name was Job.(B) This man was blameless(C) and upright;(D) he feared God(E) and shunned evil.(F) 2 He had seven sons(G) and three daughters,(H) 3 and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys,(I) and had a large number of servants.(J) He was the greatest man(K) among all the people of the East.(L)
4 His sons used to hold feasts(M) in their homes on their birthdays, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. 5 When a period of feasting had run its course, Job would make arrangements for them to be purified.(N) Early in the morning he would sacrifice a burnt offering(O) for each of them, thinking, “Perhaps my children have sinned(P) and cursed God(Q) in their hearts.” This was Job’s regular custom.
6 One day the angels[a](R) came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan[b](S) also came with them.(T) 7 The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?”
Satan answered the Lord, “From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.”(U)
8 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job?(V) There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God(W) and shuns evil.”(X)
9 “Does Job fear God for nothing?”(Y) Satan replied. 10 “Have you not put a hedge(Z) around him and his household and everything he has?(AA) You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land.(AB) 11 But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has,(AC) and he will surely curse you to your face.”(AD)
12 The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has(AE) is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.”(AF)
Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.
13 One day when Job’s sons and daughters(AG) were feasting(AH) and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house, 14 a messenger came to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing(AI) nearby, 15 and the Sabeans(AJ) attacked and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”
16 While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, “The fire of God fell from the heavens(AK) and burned up the sheep and the servants,(AL) and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”
17 While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, “The Chaldeans(AM) formed three raiding parties and swept down on your camels and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”
18 While he was still speaking, yet another messenger came and said, “Your sons and daughters(AN) were feasting(AO) and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house, 19 when suddenly a mighty wind(AP) swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on them and they are dead,(AQ) and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!(AR)”
20 At this, Job got up and tore his robe(AS) and shaved his head.(AT) Then he fell to the ground in worship(AU) 21 and said:
“Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
and naked I will depart.[c](AV)
The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away;(AW)
may the name of the Lord be praised.”(AX)
22 In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.(AY)
