Job and His Family
1 There was once a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job. That man was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil. 2 There were born to him seven sons and three daughters. 3 He had seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred donkeys, and very many servants; so that this man was the greatest of all the people of the east. 4 His sons used to go and hold feasts in one another’s houses in turn; and they would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. 5 And when the feast days had run their course, Job would send and sanctify them, and he would rise early in the morning and offer burnt-offerings according to the number of them all; for Job said, ‘It may be that my children have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts.’ This is what Job always did.
Attack on Job’s Character
6 One day the heavenly beings[a] came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan[b] also came among them. 7 The Lord said to Satan,[c] ‘Where have you come from?’ Satan[d] answered the Lord, ‘From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it.’ 8 The Lord said to Satan,[e] ‘Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man who fears God and turns away from evil.’ 9 Then Satan[f] answered the Lord, ‘Does Job fear God for nothing? 10 Have you not put a fence around him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. 11 But stretch out your hand now, and touch all that he has, and he will curse you to your face.’ 12 The Lord said to Satan,[g] ‘Very well, all that he has is in your power; only do not stretch out your hand against him!’ So Satan[h] went out from the presence of the Lord.
Job Loses Property and Children
13 One day when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in the eldest brother’s house, 14 a messenger came to Job and said, ‘The oxen were ploughing and the donkeys were feeding beside them, 15 and the Sabeans fell on them and carried them off, and killed the servants with the edge of the sword; I alone have escaped to tell you.’ 16 While he was still speaking, another came and said, ‘The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them; I alone have escaped to tell you.’ 17 While he was still speaking, another came and said, ‘The Chaldeans formed three columns, made a raid on the camels and carried them off, and killed the servants with the edge of the sword; I alone have escaped to tell you.’ 18 While he was still speaking, another came and said, ‘Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house, 19 and suddenly a great wind came across the desert, struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young people, and they are dead; I alone have escaped to tell you.’
20 Then Job arose, tore his robe, shaved his head, and fell on the ground and worshipped. 21 He said, ‘Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return there; the Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.’
22 In all this Job did not sin or charge God with wrongdoing.

Las calamidades de Job
1 Hubo en tierra de Uz un varón llamado Job; y era este hombre perfecto y recto, temeroso de Dios y apartado del mal. 2 Y le nacieron siete hijos y tres hijas. 3 Su hacienda era siete mil ovejas, tres mil camellos, quinientas yuntas de bueyes, quinientas asnas, y muchísimos criados; y era aquel varón más grande que todos los orientales. 4 E iban sus hijos y hacían banquetes en sus casas, cada uno en su día; y enviaban a llamar a sus tres hermanas para que comiesen y bebiesen con ellos. 5 Y acontecía que habiendo pasado en turno los días del convite, Job enviaba y los santificaba, y se levantaba de mañana y ofrecía holocaustos conforme al número de todos ellos. Porque decía Job: Quizá habrán pecado mis hijos, y habrán blasfemado contra Dios en sus corazones. De esta manera hacía todos los días.
6 Un día vinieron a presentarse delante de Jehová los hijos de Dios, entre los cuales vino también Satanás. 7 Y dijo Jehová a Satanás: ¿De dónde vienes? Respondiendo Satanás a Jehová, dijo: De rodear la tierra y de andar por ella. 8 Y Jehová dijo a Satanás: ¿No has considerado a mi siervo Job, que no hay otro como él en la tierra, varón perfecto y recto, temeroso de Dios y apartado del mal? 9 Respondiendo Satanás a Jehová, dijo: ¿Acaso teme Job a Dios de balde? 10 ¿No le has cercado alrededor a él y a su casa y a todo lo que tiene? Al trabajo de sus manos has dado bendición; por tanto, sus bienes han aumentado sobre la tierra. 11 Pero extiende ahora tu mano y toca todo lo que tiene, y verás si no blasfema contra ti en tu misma presencia.(A) 12 Dijo Jehová a Satanás: He aquí, todo lo que tiene está en tu mano; solamente no pongas tu mano sobre él. Y salió Satanás de delante de Jehová.
13 Y un día aconteció que sus hijos e hijas comían y bebían vino en casa de su hermano el primogénito, 14 y vino un mensajero a Job, y le dijo: Estaban arando los bueyes, y las asnas paciendo cerca de ellos, 15 y acometieron los sabeos y los tomaron, y mataron a los criados a filo de espada; solamente escapé yo para darte la noticia. 16 Aún estaba este hablando, cuando vino otro que dijo: Fuego de Dios cayó del cielo, que quemó las ovejas y a los pastores, y los consumió; solamente escapé yo para darte la noticia. 17 Todavía estaba este hablando, y vino otro que dijo: Los caldeos hicieron tres escuadrones, y arremetieron contra los camellos y se los llevaron, y mataron a los criados a filo de espada; y solamente escapé yo para darte la noticia. 18 Entre tanto que este hablaba, vino otro que dijo: Tus hijos y tus hijas estaban comiendo y bebiendo vino en casa de su hermano el primogénito; 19 y un gran viento vino del lado del desierto y azotó las cuatro esquinas de la casa, la cual cayó sobre los jóvenes, y murieron; y solamente escapé yo para darte la noticia. 20 Entonces Job se levantó, y rasgó su manto, y rasuró su cabeza, y se postró en tierra y adoró, 21 y dijo: Desnudo salí del vientre de mi madre, y desnudo volveré allá. Jehová dio, y Jehová quitó; sea el nombre de Jehová bendito. 22 En todo esto no pecó Job, ni atribuyó a Dios despropósito alguno.

Job sometido a prueba
1 Érase una vez un hombre llamado Job, que vivía en el país de Hus. Era justo, honrado y respetuoso de Dios, y vivía apartado del mal. 2 Tenía siete hijos y tres hijas. 3 Poseía siete mil ovejas, tres mil camellos, quinientas yuntas de bueyes, quinientas burras y muchísimos siervos. Era el más rico de los hombres de Oriente. 4 Sus hijos solían juntarse para comer, cada día en casa de uno, e invitaban a sus tres hermanas. 5 Terminados esos días de fiesta, Job los hacía venir para purificarlos; y de mañana ofrecía un holocausto por cada uno, por si habían pecado maldiciendo a Dios en su interior. Cada vez hacía Job lo mismo. 6 Un día se presentaron ante el Señor los hijos de Dios; también Satán entró con ellos. 7 El Señor preguntó a Satán:
— ¿De dónde vienes?
Satán respondió al Señor:
— Vengo de dar vueltas por la tierra; de andar por ella.
8 El Señor añadió:
— ¿Te has fijado en mi siervo Job? En la tierra no hay otro como él: es un hombre justo, honrado y respetuoso de Dios, y vive apartado del mal.
9 Satán contestó al Señor:
— ¿Y crees que Job respeta a Dios sin motivo? 10 Tú mismo lo has rodeado de seguridad; lo has protegido, junto con su hogar y sus pertenencias: has bendecido sus trabajos, y sus rebaños llenan el país. 11 Pero te apuesto que si extiendes tu mano y dañas sus posesiones, te maldecirá a la cara.
12 El Señor respondió a Satán:
— Haz lo que quieras con sus cosas, pero no se te ocurra tocar su persona. Satán abandonó la presencia del Señor.
13 Un día que sus hijos e hijas banqueteaban en casa del hermano mayor, 14 llegó un mensajero a casa de Job con la siguiente noticia:
— Mientras los bueyes estaban arando y las burras pastando a su lado, 15 cayeron sobre ellos unos sabeos, acuchillaron a los mozos y se llevaron el ganado. Sólo yo he podido escapar para contártelo.
16 Aún no había acabado el mensajero de hablar, cuando llegó otro con la siguiente noticia:
— Ha caído un rayo del cielo que ha quemado y consumido a las ovejas y a los pastores. Sólo yo he podido escapar para contártelo.
17 Aún no había acabado este de hablar, cuando llegó otro con la siguiente noticia:
— Una banda de caldeos, divididos en tres grupos, ha caído sobre los camellos y se los ha llevado, después de acuchillar a los mozos. Sólo yo he podido escapar para contártelo.
18 Aún no había acabado este de hablar, cuando llegó otro con la siguiente noticia:
— Estaban tus hijos y tus hijas banqueteando en casa del hermano mayor, 19 cuando un huracán que cruzaba el desierto embistió la casa por los cuatro costados; la casa se derrumbó sobre los jóvenes y los mató. Sólo yo he podido escapar para contártelo.
20 Job se levantó, se rasgó la ropa, se afeitó la cabeza, se echó por tierra 21 y dijo: “Desnudo salí del vientre de mi madre y desnudo volveré a él. El Señor me lo dio, el Señor me lo quitó; bendito sea el nombre del Señor”.
22 A pesar de todo lo sucedido, Job no pecó ni maldijo a Dios.

1 There was a man in the country of Uz(A) named Job.(B) He was a man of perfect integrity,(C) who feared God and turned away from evil.(D) 2 He had seven sons and three daughters. 3 His estate included 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, 500 female donkeys, and a very large number of servants. Job was the greatest man among all the people of the east.
4 His sons used to take turns having banquets at their homes. They would send an invitation to their three sisters to eat and drink with them. 5 Whenever a round of banqueting was over, Job would send for his children and purify them, rising early in the morning to offer burnt offerings for[a] all of them. For Job thought: Perhaps my children have sinned, having cursed God in their hearts. This was Job’s regular practice.
Satan’s First Test of Job
6 One day the sons of God(E) came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan[b] also came with them. 7 The Lord asked Satan, “Where have you come from?”
“From roaming through the earth,”(F) Satan answered Him, “and walking around on it.”
8 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? No one else on earth is like him, a man of perfect integrity, who fears God and turns away from evil.”
9 Satan answered the Lord, “Does Job fear God for nothing? 10 Haven’t You placed a hedge around(G) him, his household, and everything he owns? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. 11 But stretch out Your hand and strike(H) everything he owns, and he will surely curse You to Your face.”
12 “Very well,” the Lord told Satan, “everything he owns is in your power. However, you must not lay a hand on Job himself.” So Satan left the Lord’s presence.
13 One day when Job’s sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, 14 a messenger came to Job and reported: “While the oxen were plowing and the donkeys grazing nearby, 15 the Sabeans(I) swooped down and took them away. They struck down the servants with the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
16 He was still speaking when another messenger came and reported: “A lightning storm[c] struck from heaven.(J) It burned up the sheep and the servants and devoured them, and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
17 That messenger was still speaking when yet another came and reported: “The Chaldeans formed three bands, made a raid on the camels, and took them away. They struck down the servants with the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
18 He was still speaking when another messenger came and reported: “Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house. 19 Suddenly a powerful wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on the young people so that they died, and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
20 Then Job stood up, tore(K) his robe, and shaved(L) his head.[d] He fell to the ground and worshiped, 21 saying:
Naked I came from my mother’s womb,(M)
and naked I will leave this life.[e](N)
The Lord gives, and the Lord takes away.
Praise the name of Yahweh.(O)
22 Throughout all this Job did not sin or blame God for anything.[f](P)
