Job and His Family
1 There was a man in the country of Uz(A) named Job.(B) He was a man of complete integrity,(C) who feared God and turned away from evil.(D) 2 He had seven sons and three daughters.(E) 3 His estate included seven thousand sheep and goats, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred female donkeys,(F) and a very large number of servants. Job was the greatest man among all the people of the east.(G)
4 His sons used to take turns having banquets at their homes. They would send an invitation to their three sisters to eat and drink with them. 5 Whenever a round of banqueting was over, Job would send for his children and purify them, rising early in the morning to offer burnt offerings for[a] all of them. For Job thought, “Perhaps my children have sinned, having cursed God in their hearts.”(H) This was Job’s regular practice.
Satan’s First Test of Job
6 One day the sons of God(I) came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan[b] also came with them. 7 The Lord asked Satan, “Where have you come from?”
“From roaming through the earth,”(J) Satan answered him, “and walking around on it.”
8 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? No one else on earth is like him, a man of perfect integrity,(K) who fears God and turns away from evil.”(L)
9 Satan answered the Lord, “Does Job fear God for nothing? 10 Haven’t you placed a hedge around(M) him, his household, and everything he owns? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. 11 But stretch out your hand and strike(N) everything he owns, and he will surely curse you to your face.”
12 “Very well,” the Lord told Satan, “everything he owns is in your power. However, do not lay a hand on Job himself.” So Satan left the Lord’s presence.
13 One day when Job’s sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, 14 a messenger came to Job and reported, “While the oxen were plowing and the donkeys grazing nearby, 15 the Sabeans(O) swooped down and took them away. They struck down the servants with the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
16 He was still speaking when another messenger came and reported, “God’s fire fell from heaven.(P) It burned the sheep and the servants and devoured them, and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
17 That messenger was still speaking when yet another came and reported, “The Chaldeans formed three bands, made a raid on the camels, and took them away. They struck down the servants with the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
18 He was still speaking when another messenger came and reported, “Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house. 19 Suddenly a powerful wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on the young people so that they died, and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
20 Then Job stood up, tore(Q) his robe, and shaved(R) his head. He fell to the ground and worshiped, 21 saying:
Naked I came from my mother’s womb,(S)
and naked I will leave this life.[c](T)
The Lord gives, and the Lord takes away.
Blessed be the name of the Lord.(U)
22 Throughout all this Job did not sin or blame God for anything.[d](V)

1 Yr oedd gŵr yng ngwlad Us a’i enw Job; ac yr oedd y gŵr hwnnw yn berffaith ac yn uniawn, ac yn ofni Duw, ac yn cilio oddi wrth ddrygioni. 2 Ac iddo y ganwyd saith o feibion, a thair o ferched. 3 A’i olud oedd saith mil o ddefaid, a thair mil o gamelod, a phum can iau o ychen, a phum cant o asynnod, a llawer iawn o wasanaethyddion; ac yr oedd y gŵr hwn yn fwyaf o holl feibion y dwyrain. 4 A’i feibion ef a aent ac a wnaent wledd yn eu tai, bob un ar ei ddiwrnod; ac a anfonent ac a wahoddent eu tair chwaer i fwyta ac i yfed gyda hwynt. 5 A phan ddeuai dyddiau y wledd oddi amgylch, yna Job a anfonai ac a’u sancteiddiai hwynt, ac a gyfodai yn fore, ac a offrymai boethoffrymau yn ôl eu rhifedi hwynt oll: canys dywedodd Job, Fy meibion ond odid a bechasant, ac a felltithiasant Dduw yn eu calonnau. Felly y gwnâi Job yr holl ddyddiau hynny.
6 A dydd a ddaeth i feibion Duw ddyfod i sefyll gerbron yr Arglwydd; a Satan hefyd a ddaeth yn eu plith hwynt. 7 A’r Arglwydd a ddywedodd wrth Satan, O ba le yr ydwyt ti yn dyfod? A Satan a atebodd yr Arglwydd, ac a ddywedodd, O dramwy ar hyd y ddaear, ac o ymrodio ynddi. 8 A dywedodd yr Arglwydd wrth Satan, A ddeliaist ti ar fy ngwas Job, nad oes gyffelyb iddo ar y ddaear, yn ŵr perffaith ac uniawn, yn ofni Duw, ac yn cilio oddi wrth ddrygioni? 9 Yna Satan a atebodd yr Arglwydd, ac a ddywedodd, Ai yn ddiachos y mae Job yn ofni Duw? 10 Oni chaeaist o’i amgylch ef, ac o amgylch ei dŷ, ac ynghylch yr hyn oll sydd eiddo oddi amgylch? ti a fendithiaist waith ei ddwylo ef, a’i dda ef a gynyddodd ar y ddaear. 11 Eithr estyn yn awr dy law, a chyffwrdd â’r hyn oll sydd ganddo, ac efe a’th felltithia o flaen dy wyneb. 12 A’r Arglwydd a ddywedodd wrth Satan, Wele, yr hyn oll sydd eiddo ef yn dy law di; yn unig yn ei erbyn ef ei hun nac estyn dy law. Felly Satan a aeth allan oddi gerbron yr Arglwydd.
13 A dydd a ddaeth, pan oedd ei feibion ef a’i ferched yn bwyta ac yn yfed gwin yn nhŷ eu brawd hynaf. 14 A daeth cennad at Job, ac a ddywedodd, Yr ychen oedd yn aredig, a’r asynnod oedd yn pori gerllaw iddynt; 15 A’r Sabeaid a ruthrasant, ac a’u dygasant ymaith; y llanciau hefyd a drawsant hwy â min y cleddyf, a mi fy hunan yn unig a ddihengais i fynegi i ti. 16 Tra yr oedd hwn yn llefaru, un arall hefyd a ddaeth, ac a ddywedodd, Tân Duw a syrthiodd o’r nefoedd, ac a losgodd y defaid, a’r gweision, ac a’u hysodd hwynt; ond myfi fy hunan yn unig a ddihengais i fynegi i ti. 17 Tra yr ydoedd hwn yn llefaru, un arall hefyd a ddaeth, ac a ddywedodd, Y Caldeaid a osodasant dair byddin, ac a ruthrasant i’r camelod, ac a’u dygasant ymaith, ac a drawsant y llanciau â min y cleddyf; a minnau fy hun yn unig a ddihengais i fynegi i ti. 18 Tra yr ydoedd hwn yn llefaru, un arall hefyd a ddaeth, ac a ddywedodd, Dy feibion a’th ferched oedd yn bwyta ac yn yfed gwin yn nhŷ eu brawd hynaf: 19 Ac wele, gwynt mawr a ddaeth oddi ar yr anialwch, ac a drawodd wrth bedair congl y tŷ, ac efe a syrthiodd ar y llanciau, a buant feirw; ond myfi fy hun yn unig a ddihengais i fynegi i ti. 20 Yna y cyfododd Job, ac a rwygodd ei fantell, ac a eilliodd ei ben, ac a syrthiodd i lawr, ac a addolodd; 21 Ac a ddywedodd, Noeth y deuthum o groth fy mam, a noeth y dychwelaf yno. Yr Arglwydd a roddodd, ar Arglwydd a ddygodd ymaith; bendigedig fyddo enw yr Arglwydd. 22 Yn hyn i gyd ni phechodd Job, ac ni roddodd yn ynfyd ddim yn erbyn Duw.

Prologue
1 In the land of Uz(A) there lived a man whose name was Job.(B) This man was blameless(C) and upright;(D) he feared God(E) and shunned evil.(F) 2 He had seven sons(G) and three daughters,(H) 3 and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys,(I) and had a large number of servants.(J) He was the greatest man(K) among all the people of the East.(L)
4 His sons used to hold feasts(M) in their homes on their birthdays, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. 5 When a period of feasting had run its course, Job would make arrangements for them to be purified.(N) Early in the morning he would sacrifice a burnt offering(O) for each of them, thinking, “Perhaps my children have sinned(P) and cursed God(Q) in their hearts.” This was Job’s regular custom.
6 One day the angels[a](R) came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan[b](S) also came with them.(T) 7 The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?”
Satan answered the Lord, “From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.”(U)
8 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job?(V) There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God(W) and shuns evil.”(X)
9 “Does Job fear God for nothing?”(Y) Satan replied. 10 “Have you not put a hedge(Z) around him and his household and everything he has?(AA) You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land.(AB) 11 But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has,(AC) and he will surely curse you to your face.”(AD)
12 The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has(AE) is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.”(AF)
Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.
13 One day when Job’s sons and daughters(AG) were feasting(AH) and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house, 14 a messenger came to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing(AI) nearby, 15 and the Sabeans(AJ) attacked and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”
16 While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, “The fire of God fell from the heavens(AK) and burned up the sheep and the servants,(AL) and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”
17 While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, “The Chaldeans(AM) formed three raiding parties and swept down on your camels and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”
18 While he was still speaking, yet another messenger came and said, “Your sons and daughters(AN) were feasting(AO) and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house, 19 when suddenly a mighty wind(AP) swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on them and they are dead,(AQ) and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!(AR)”
20 At this, Job got up and tore his robe(AS) and shaved his head.(AT) Then he fell to the ground in worship(AU) 21 and said:
“Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
and naked I will depart.[c](AV)
The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away;(AW)
may the name of the Lord be praised.”(AX)
22 In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.(AY)

Job’s Faithfulness
1 There once was a man in the land of Uz[a] named Job. The man was blameless as well as upright. He feared God and kept away from evil. 2 Seven sons and three daughters had been born to him. 3 His livestock included 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 teams[b] of oxen, 500 female donkeys, and many servants. Indeed, the man’s stature greatly exceeded that of many people who lived in the East. 4 His sons used to travel to each other’s houses in turn on a regular schedule and hold festivals, inviting their three sisters to celebrate[c] with them.
5 When their time of feasting had concluded, Job would rise early in the morning to send for them[d] and consecrate them to God.[e] He would offer a burnt offering for each one,[f] because Job thought, “Perhaps my children sinned by cursing God in their hearts.” Job did this time and again.[g]
Satan’s First Attack on Job
6 One day, divine beings[h] presented themselves to the Lord, and Satan[i] accompanied them. 7 The Lord asked Satan, “Where have you come from?”
In response, Satan answered the Lord, “From wandering all over the earth and walking back and forth throughout it.”
8 Then the Lord asked Satan, “Have you considered[j] my servant Job? There is no one like him on earth. The man is blameless as well as upright. He fears God and keeps away from evil.”
9 But in response, Satan asked the Lord, “Does Job fear God for nothing? 10 Haven’t you surrounded him with a fence on all sides, around his house, and around all that he owns? You have blessed everything he puts his hands on and you have increased his livestock in the land. 11 However, stretch out your hand and strike everything he owns, and he will curse you to your face.”
12 Then the Lord told Satan, “Very well then, everything he owns is under your control,[k] only you may not extend your hand against him.” So Satan left the Lord’s presence.
13 Some time later, when his children[l] were celebrating[m] in their oldest[n] brother’s house, 14 a messenger approached Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the female donkeys were grazing nearby 15 when the Sabeans attacked, captured the servants, and killed them with swords. I alone escaped to tell you!”
16 While this messenger[o] was still speaking, another[p] came and announced, “A lightning storm struck[q] and incinerated the flock and the servants while they were eating. I alone escaped to tell you!”
17 While this messenger[r] was still speaking, another[s] came and announced, “The Chaldeans formed three companies, raided the camels, captured the servants, and killed them with swords. Only I alone escaped to tell you.”
18 While this messenger[t] was still speaking, another[u] came and announced, “Your children were celebrating[v] in their oldest[w] brother’s house 19 when a strong wind came straight out of the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on the young people, and they died. I alone escaped to tell you!”
Job Blesses God Despite the Catastrophe
20 Then Job stood up, tore his robe, shaved his head, fell to the ground, bowed very low, 21 and exclaimed:
“I left my mother’s womb naked,
and I will return to God naked.
The Lord has given,
and the Lord has taken.
May the name of the Lord be blessed.”
22 Job neither sinned nor charged God with wrongdoing in all of this.
