Gods woorden voor koning Kores van Perzië

45 Dit zegt de Heer tegen Kores: 'U bent de man die Ik tot koning heb gezalfd. Ik neem u bij de hand om de volken te overwinnen. Ik zal ervoor zorgen dat koningen hun zwaard neerleggen. Ik doe deuren voor u open. Geen enkele poort blijft gesloten. 2 Ik zal Zelf voor u uit gaan en de weg voor u vrijmaken. Ik zal koperen deuren openbreken en ijzeren grendels stukslaan. 3 Ik zal u geheime schatten en verborgen rijkdommen geven. Zo zult u weten, dat Ik, de Heer, het ben die u geroepen heb. Ik, de God van Israël. 4 Ik riep u, ook al kende u Mij niet. Ik riep u vanwege mijn volk Israël, dat Ik heb uitgekozen. Ik riep u en maakte u machtig. 5 Ik ben de Heer en er is geen andere God. Ik ben de enige God. Ik zal u machtig maken, ook al kent u Mij niet.'

6 Van oost tot west zal iedereen weten dat er behalve Mij geen God is. Alleen Ik ben de Heer, en niemand anders. 7 Alleen Ik maak het licht en de duisternis. Alleen Ik breng vrede en onheil. Ik, de Heer, ben het die dat doet. 8 Hemel, laat rechtvaardigheid neerdruppelen als de dauw. Wolken, laat rechtvaardigheid neerstromen als de regen. Aarde, doe je mond open, zodat goedheid ontkiemt en rechtvaardigheid daaruit opgroeit. Ik, de Heer, heb dit gedaan."

De Heer hoeft aan niemand uit te leggen waarom Hij iets doet

9 De Heer zegt: "Het zal slecht aflopen met de mensen die ruzie zoeken met hun Maker. Ze zijn maar als een potscherf tussen andere scherven. Durft soms de klei tegen de pottenbakker te zeggen: 'Wat maak je?' Of durft de pot die de pottenbakker gemaakt heeft soms van zijn maker te zeggen: 'Hij kan er niets van!'? 10 Je kan ook niet tegen je vader zeggen: 'Waarom heeft u mij gemaakt?' Of tegen je moeder: 'Waarom heeft u mij op de wereld gezet?' 11 Volk van Israël, Ik ben jullie Maker. Ik ben jullie Heilige God. Durven jullie Mij te vragen wat Ik ga doen? Durven jullie Mij te zeggen wat Ik moet doen met het volk dat Ik gemaakt heb? 12 Ik heb de aarde gemaakt en de mensen die daarop wonen. Ik heb dat gedaan. Mijn handen hebben de hemel gemaakt. Ik heb de zon, de maan en de sterren bevolen hoe ze moeten gaan. 13 En Ik heb hem (Kores) gemaakt om mijn plan uit te voeren. Ik zal voor hem de weg vrijmaken. Hij zal mijn stad weer laten opbouwen. Hij zal de mensen die hij van mijn volk gevangen hield, weer vrijlaten. Hij zal hen laten gaan, zonder dat hij losgeld of een geschenk voor hen heeft gekregen,[a] zegt de Heer van de hemelse legers.

14 Israël, de rijkdommen van Egypte en de koopwaar van Ethiopië zullen jullie in de schoot vallen. De grote, sterke Sabeeërs zullen in boeien naar jullie toe komen en jullie dienen. Ze zullen voor jullie neerknielen en smeken: 'Alleen bij jullie is God, en er is geen andere God.' "

15 Jesaja zegt: U bent een God die Zich verborgen houdt. U bent niet te zien. U bent de God van Israël en de Redder van Israël. 16 De mensen die godenbeelden aanbidden, zullen voor schut komen te staan. Allemaal zullen ze bedrogen uitkomen. 17 Maar Israël wordt door de Heer bevrijd, voor eeuwig. Israël zal zich voor eeuwig niet hoeven te schamen en zal nooit voor schut staan.

18 Want dit zegt de Heer: "Ik heb de hemel gemaakt. Ik ben de God die de aarde heeft gemaakt en stevig heeft neergezet. Ik heb de aarde niet gemaakt om onbewoonbaar en leeg te blijven, maar om door mensen te worden bewoond. Ik ben de Heer en er is geen andere God. 19 Ik heb niet gesproken op een plaats waar niemand het kon horen. Of in het donker, waar niemand was. Ik zou tegen het volk Israël niet gezegd hebben dat ze Mij moesten zoeken, als Ik Me niet wilde laten vinden. Wat Ik zeg, is de waarheid. Ik ben de Heer en wat Ik zeg, is te vertrouwen.

20 Ik wil dat iedereen die aan de andere volken ontkomen is, nu hier bij Mij komt. Ik zeg jullie: die volken begrijpen niets. Ze dragen houten godenbeelden rond en bidden tot goden die niet kunnen redden. 21 Overleg nu met elkaar: wie heeft jullie van tevoren gezegd wat er ging gebeuren? Dat was Ik toch, de Heer? Er is geen andere God dan Ik. Alleen Ik ben een rechtvaardige, reddende God. Een andere God is er niet.

22 Volken van de aarde, kom naar Mij als je gered wil worden. Want alleen Ik ben God. 23 Want Ik zweer bij Mijzelf dat Ik de waarheid heb gesproken toen Ik zei: 'Iedereen zal zich voor Mij moeten buigen. Iedereen zal alleen bij Mij zweren.' 24 Ze zullen van Mij zeggen: 'Alleen de Heer is rechtvaardig. Alleen de Heer is machtig. Iedereen moet naar Hem toe gaan.' "

Jesaja zegt: Maar iedereen die zich tegen God verzet, zal bedrogen uitkomen. 25 Maar de Heer zal door het hele volk Israël geprezen worden. Heel Israël zal trots zijn op zijn God.

Er bestaat geen andere God buiten de Here

45 Dit is de boodschap van de Here aan Kores, Gods gezalfde, die Hij heeft uitgekozen om vele landen te veroveren. God zal zijn rechterhand kracht geven en hij zal de kracht van machtige koningen breken. Deuren gaan voor hem open, geen poort blijft voor hem gesloten.

2 Ik zal voor u uitgaan en de bergen vlak maken, koperen stadspoorten met ijzeren grendels zal Ik voor u openbreken. 3 En Ik zal u verborgen schatten geven, heimelijk bewaarde kostbaarheden. En u zult weten dat Ik dit doe: Ik, de Here, de God van Israël. Ik roep u bij uw naam. 4 Ter wille van mijn dienaar Jakob, mijn uitverkoren volk Israël, heb Ik u voor dit werk geroepen, u bij uw naam geroepen. Ik gaf u een erenaam, hoewel u Mij niet kende. 5 Ik ben de Here, er bestaat geen andere God. Ik zal u kracht geven om overwinningen te behalen, ook al kent u Mij niet. 6 De hele wereld, van oost tot west, zal weten dat er geen andere God bestaat. Ik ben de Here en er bestaat niemand anders. Ik alleen ben God. 7 Ik formeer het licht en schep de duisternis. Ik zorg voor vrede en doe het onheil komen. Ik, de Here, doe deze dingen. 8 Hemelen, druppel van boven. Wolken, laat gerechtigheid stromen. Aarde, open uw schoot, opdat het heil en de vrede groeien mogen. Ik, de Here, heb het bewerkt. 9 Wee degene die zijn schepper bestrijdt. Durft de pot ruzie te maken met zijn maker? Zegt de klei tegen degene die haar kneedt: ‘Stop, u doet het verkeerd!’ of roept de pot: ‘U kunt er niets van!’ 10 Wee het pasgeboren kind dat tegen zijn vader zegt: ‘Waarom hebt u mij verwekt?’ en tegen zijn moeder: ‘Waarom hebt u mij gebaard?’ 11 De Here, de Heilige van Israël, Israëls schepper, zegt: welk recht hebt u om vraagtekens te zetten achter wat Ik doe? Wie denkt u dat u bent om Mij bevelen te geven over het werk van mijn handen? 12 Ik maakte de aarde en schiep daarop de mens. Met mijn handen strekte Ik de hemel uit en Ik gaf bevelen aan de sterren die aan de hemel staan.

13 Ik heb hem laten opstaan om mijn gerechtigheid te laten vervullen en Ik zal de weg voor hem effenen. Hij zal mijn stad herbouwen en mijn gevangengenomen volk bevrijden, zonder daarvoor een beloning te krijgen! 14 De Here zegt: de Egyptenaren, Ethiopiërs en Arabieren zullen aan u onderworpen zijn. Zij zullen met hun handelswaar bij u komen en het zal van u zijn. Zij zullen u als gevangenen in ketens volgen, voor u op de knieën vallen en zeggen: ‘Uw God is de enige God die er is!’ 15 Werkelijk, God van Israël, U bent een God die Zich verborgen houdt en U bent een God die bevrijdt. 16 Allen die beelden aanbidden, zullen worden teleurgesteld en zich diep schamen. 17 Maar Israël zal voor altijd door de Here worden gered, zij zullen in alle eeuwigheid niet worden teleurgesteld in hun God. 18 Want zo zegt de Here, die de hemelen heeft geschapen, Hij is God, die de aarde heeft gevormd en toebereid—Hij heeft haar niet als een woestenij geschapen—opdat zij bewoond zou zijn: Ik ben de Here en er bestaat geen andere God! 19 Ik heb in het openbaar grote beloften gedaan, Ik fluister geen geheimzinnige dingen in één of andere donkere hoek, zodat niemand kan horen wat Ik eigenlijk bedoel. En Ik heb Israël niet gezegd Mij tevergeefs te zoeken, want Ik, de Here, spreek eerlijk en open en wat Ik zeg, is betrouwbaar. 20 Verzamel u en kom hier, allen die aan de veroveringen zijn ontkomen. Wat een onwetenden, wat een onverstandigen zijn het die met houten afgodsbeelden rondlopen en goden aanbidden die hen niet kunnen helpen! 21 Laat de bewijzen maar eens horen die u meent te hebben van het nut van het aanbidden van afgodsbeelden! Wie anders dan God heeft tevoren gezegd dat die dingen zouden gaan gebeuren? Welke afgod heeft u dat ooit verteld? Want er bestaat geen andere God dan Ik—een rechtvaardige God en een redder—nee, niet één! 22 Laat de hele wereld zich, wanneer het om verlossing gaat, tot Mij wenden. Want Ik ben God, er bestaat geen andere God. 23 Ik heb bij Mijzelf gezworen—en mijn woord terugnemen doe Ik niet, want het is een waar woord—dat elke knie voor Mij zal buigen en dat elke tong zal zweren bij mijn naam. 24 ‘In de Here ligt al mijn gerechtigheid en kracht,’ zullen de mensen verklaren. Allen die zich tegen Hem verzetten, zullen tot Hem komen en zich schamen. 25 In de Here worden alle generaties van Israël gerechtvaardigd en zij zullen zich op Hem beroemen.

45 “This is what the Lord says to his chosen one,[a]

to Cyrus, whose right hand I hold[b]
in order to subdue nations before him,
and disarm kings,[c]
to open doors before him,
so gates remain unclosed:

2 ‘I will go before you
and level mountains.[d]
Bronze doors I will shatter
and iron bars[e] I will hack through.
3 I will give you hidden treasures,[f]
riches stashed away in secret places,
so you may recognize that I am the Lord,
the one who calls you by name, the God of Israel.
4 For the sake of my servant Jacob,
Israel, my chosen one,
I call you by name
and give you a title of respect, even though you do not submit[g] to me.
5 I am the Lord, I have no peer,[h]
there is no God but me.
I arm you for battle,[i] even though you do not recognize[j] me.
6 I do this[k] so people[l] will recognize from east to west
that there is no God but me;
I am the Lord, I have no peer.
7 I am[m] the one who forms light
and creates darkness;[n]
the one who brings about peace
and creates calamity.[o]
I am the Lord, who accomplishes all these things.
8 O sky, rain down from above!
Let the clouds send down showers[p] of deliverance!
Let the earth absorb it[q] so salvation may grow,[r]
and deliverance may sprout up[s] along with it.
I, the Lord, create it.’”[t]

The Lord Gives a Warning

9 One who argues with his Creator is in grave danger,[u]
one who is like a mere[v] shard among the other shards on the ground!
The clay should not say to the potter,[w]
“What in the world[x] are you doing?
Your work lacks skill!”[y]
10 Danger awaits one who says[z] to his father,
“What in the world[aa] are you fathering?”
and to his mother,
“What in the world are you bringing forth?”[ab]
11 This is what the Lord says,
the Holy One of Israel,[ac] the one who formed him,
concerning things to come:[ad]
“How dare you question me[ae] about my children!
How dare you tell me what to do with[af] the work of my own hands!
12 I made the earth;
I created the people who live[ag] on it.
It was me—my hands[ah] stretched out the sky.[ai]
I give orders to all the heavenly lights.[aj]
13 It is me—I stir him up and commission him;[ak]
I will make all his ways level.
He will rebuild my city;
he will send my exiled people home,
but not for a price or a bribe,”
says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

The Lord is the Nations’ Only Hope

14 This is what the Lord says:

“The profit[al] of Egypt and the revenue[am] of Ethiopia,
along with the Sabeans, those tall men,
will be brought to you[an] and become yours.
They will walk behind you, coming along in chains.[ao]
They will bow down to you
and pray to you:[ap]
‘Truly God is with[aq] you; he has no peer;[ar]
there is no other God!’”
15 Yes, you are a God who keeps hidden,
O God of Israel, deliverer!
16 They will all be ashamed and embarrassed;
those who fashion idols will all be humiliated.[as]
17 Israel will be delivered once and for all by the Lord;[at]
you will never again be ashamed or humiliated.[au]
18 For this is what the Lord says,
the one who created the sky—
he is the true God,[av]
the one who formed the earth and made it;
he established it,
he did not create it without order,[aw]
he formed it to be inhabited:
“I am the Lord, I have no peer.
19 I have not spoken in secret,
in some hidden place.[ax]
I did not tell Jacob’s descendants,
‘Seek me in vain!’[ay]
I am the Lord,
the one who speaks honestly,
who makes reliable announcements.[az]
20 Gather together and come!
Approach together, you refugees from the nations.
Those who carry wooden idols know nothing,
those who pray to a god that cannot deliver.
21 Tell me! Present the evidence![ba]
Let them consult with one another.
Who predicted this in the past?
Who announced it beforehand?
Was it not I, the Lord?
I have no peer, there is no God but me,
a God who vindicates and delivers;[bb]
there is none but me.
22 Turn to me so you can be delivered,[bc]
all you who live in the earth’s remote regions!
For I am God, and I have no peer.
23 I solemnly make this oath[bd]—
what I say is true and reliable:[be]
‘Surely every knee will bow to me,
every tongue will solemnly affirm;[bf]
24 they will say about me,
“Yes, the Lord is a powerful deliverer.”’”[bg]
All who are angry at him will cower before him.[bh]
25 All the descendants of Israel will be vindicated by the Lord
and will boast in him.[bi]

    and cut through bars of iron.(H)
3 I will give you hidden treasures,(I)
    riches stored in secret places,(J)
so that you may know(K) that I am the Lord,
    the God of Israel, who summons you by name.(L)
4 For the sake of Jacob my servant,(M)
    of Israel my chosen,
I summon you by name
    and bestow on you a title of honor,
    though you do not acknowledge(N) me.
5 I am the Lord, and there is no other;(O)
    apart from me there is no God.(P)
I will strengthen you,(Q)
    though you have not acknowledged me,
6 so that from the rising of the sun
    to the place of its setting(R)
people may know(S) there is none besides me.(T)
    I am the Lord, and there is no other.
7 I form the light and create darkness,(U)
    I bring prosperity and create disaster;(V)
    I, the Lord, do all these things.

8 “You heavens above, rain(W) down my righteousness;(X)
    let the clouds shower it down.
Let the earth open wide,
    let salvation(Y) spring up,
let righteousness flourish with it;
    I, the Lord, have created it.

9 “Woe to those who quarrel(Z) with their Maker,(AA)
    those who are nothing but potsherds(AB)
    among the potsherds on the ground.
Does the clay say to the potter,(AC)
    ‘What are you making?’(AD)
Does your work say,
    ‘The potter has no hands’?(AE)
10 Woe to the one who says to a father,
    ‘What have you begotten?’
or to a mother,
    ‘What have you brought to birth?’

11 “This is what the Lord says—
    the Holy One(AF) of Israel, and its Maker:(AG)
Concerning things to come,
    do you question me about my children,
    or give me orders about the work of my hands?(AH)
12 It is I who made the earth(AI)
    and created mankind on it.
My own hands stretched out the heavens;(AJ)
    I marshaled their starry hosts.(AK)
13 I will raise up Cyrus[b](AL) in my righteousness:
    I will make all his ways straight.(AM)
He will rebuild my city(AN)
    and set my exiles free,
but not for a price or reward,(AO)
    says the Lord Almighty.”

14 This is what the Lord says:

“The products(AP) of Egypt and the merchandise of Cush,[c]
    and those tall Sabeans(AQ)—
they will come over to you(AR)
    and will be yours;
they will trudge behind you,(AS)
    coming over to you in chains.(AT)
They will bow down before you
    and plead(AU) with you, saying,
‘Surely God is with you,(AV) and there is no other;
    there is no other god.(AW)’”

15 Truly you are a God who has been hiding(AX) himself,
    the God and Savior(AY) of Israel.
16 All the makers of idols will be put to shame and disgraced;(AZ)
    they will go off into disgrace together.
17 But Israel will be saved(BA) by the Lord
    with an everlasting salvation;(BB)
you will never be put to shame or disgraced,(BC)
    to ages everlasting.

18 For this is what the Lord says—
he who created the heavens,
    he is God;
he who fashioned and made the earth,(BD)
    he founded it;
he did not create it to be empty,(BE)
    but formed it to be inhabited(BF)—
he says:
“I am the Lord,
    and there is no other.(BG)
19 I have not spoken in secret,(BH)
    from somewhere in a land of darkness;(BI)
I have not said to Jacob’s descendants,(BJ)
    ‘Seek(BK) me in vain.’
I, the Lord, speak the truth;
    I declare what is right.(BL)

20 “Gather together(BM) and come;
    assemble, you fugitives from the nations.
Ignorant(BN) are those who carry(BO) about idols of wood,
    who pray to gods that cannot save.(BP)
21 Declare what is to be, present it—
    let them take counsel together.
Who foretold(BQ) this long ago,
    who declared it from the distant past?(BR)
Was it not I, the Lord?
    And there is no God apart from me,(BS)
a righteous God(BT) and a Savior;(BU)
    there is none but me.

22 “Turn(BV) to me and be saved,(BW)
    all you ends of the earth;(BX)
    for I am God, and there is no other.(BY)
23 By myself I have sworn,(BZ)
    my mouth has uttered in all integrity(CA)
    a word that will not be revoked:(CB)
Before me every knee will bow;(CC)
    by me every tongue will swear.(CD)
24 They will say of me, ‘In the Lord alone
    are deliverance(CE) and strength.(CF)’”
All who have raged against him
    will come to him and be put to shame.(CG)
25 But all the descendants(CH) of Israel
    will find deliverance(CI) in the Lord
    and will make their boast in him.(CJ)
