Sång över babelkungens fall
14 Herren skall förbarma sig över Jakob och ännu en gång utvälja Israel och låta dem få ro i deras eget land. Främlingar skall sluta sig till dem och hålla sig till Jakobs hus. 2 Folken skall ta dem och föra dem hem. Och Israels hus skall få dem som sin egendom i Herrens land som tjänare och tjänarinnor. Så skall deras fångvaktare bli deras fångar, och de skall råda över sina förtryckare.
3 På den dag då Herren ger dig ro från din smärta och oro och från det hårda arbete som har varit lagt på dig, 4 skall du stämma upp denna visa över kungen i Babel och säga:
"Hur har inte förtryckaren fått ett slut,
indrivningen av guld[a] en ände!
5 Herren har brutit sönder de ogudaktigas stav,
tyrannernas ris,
6 som i grymhet slog folken
med slag på slag
och i vrede härskade över folkslagen
med skoningslös förföljelse.
7 Hela jorden har fått vila och ro,
man brister ut i jubel.
8 Även cypresserna gläds över ditt fall,
likaså Libanons cedrar:
'Nu när du ligger där,
skall ingen komma och hugga ner oss.'
9 Dödsriket därnere kommer i rörelse för din skull,
för att ta emot dig när du kommer.
Det väcker upp de avlidnas andar för din skull,
alla jordens ledare.
Det låter hednafolkens alla kungar stå upp från sina troner.
10 Alla börjar de tala och säger till dig:
'Har också du blivit svag som vi?
Du har blivit som en av oss.'
11 Ner till dödsriket har din härlighet måst fara
och dina harpors buller.
Förruttnelse är bädden under dig
och maskar ditt täcke.
12 Hur har du inte fallit från himlen,
du strålande stjärna, du gryningens son!
Hur har du inte blivit fälld till jorden,
du som slog ner folken till marken!
13 Du sade i ditt hjärta:
'Jag skall stiga upp till himlen,
ovanför Guds stjärnor skall jag upprätta min tron.
Jag skall sätta mig på mötesberget längst upp i norr.[b]
14 Jag skall stiga upp över molnens höjder,
jag skall göra mig lik den Högste.'
15 Men ner till dödsriket blev du förd,
längst ner i graven.
16 De som ser dig stirrar på dig,
de granskar dig och säger:
'Är detta den man som kom jorden att darra
och kungariken att skaka,
17 som gjorde jorden till en öken
och förstörde dess städer,
han som aldrig släppte hem sina fångar?'
18 Hednafolkens alla kungar ligger alla med ära,
var och en i sitt vilorum,
19 men du är bortkastad från din grav,
lik en föraktad gren,
täckt av dräpta män som genomborrats av svärd
och förts ner till gropens stenar.
Du är lik ett förtrampat as.
20 Du skall inte som de få vila i en grav,
ty du fördärvade ditt eget land och dräpte ditt eget folk.
Om ogärningsmännens avkomma skall man aldrig mer tala.
21 Anställ ett blodbad på hans söner
för deras fäders missgärning.
De får inte stå upp och ta jorden i besittning
och fylla landets yta med städer."
22 Jag skall resa mig upp emot dem,
säger Herren Sebaot,
och utrota ur Babel både namn och kvarleva,
både barn och efterkommande,
säger Herren.
23 Jag skall göra det till ett tillhåll för hägrar
och fylla det med sumpsjöar,
jag skall sopa bort det med ödeläggelsens kvast,
säger Herren Sebaot.
Profetia om Assyrien
24 Herren Sebaot har svurit och sagt:
Sannerligen, som jag har tänkt, så skall det ske,
det jag har beslutat skall bli verklighet.
25 Jag skall krossa Assur i mitt land,
på mina berg skall jag trampa ner honom.
Då skall hans ok lyftas av dem,
hans börda lyftas från deras skuldror.
26 Detta är det beslut som är fattat om hela jorden,
detta är den hand som är uträckt över alla folk.
27 Ty Herren Sebaot har beslutat det,
vem kan då göra det om intet?
Hans hand är uträckt,
vem kan då hindra den?
Profetia om Filisteen
28 I det år då kung Ahas dog kom denna profetia:
29 Gläd er inte, alla ni filisteer,
över att det ris som slog er är sönderbrutet,
ty från ormens rot skall en giftorm komma,
och dess avkomma blir en flygande seraf-orm.
30 De utblottades förstfödda skall finna bete,
de fattiga skall vila i trygghet.
Men din rot skall jag döda genom hunger,
de som blir kvar av dig skall dräpas.
31 Jämra dig, du port! Ropa, du stad!
Alla i filisteernas land smälter bort av ångest.
Ty ett rökmoln kommer norrifrån
och ingen blir efter i fiendernas led.
32 Vad skall man svara det främmande folkets sändebud?
- Att Herren har grundat Sion,
och där har de betryckta i hans folk sin tillflykt.

14 Men Herren ska förbarma sig över Jakob,
välja ut Israel på nytt och låta dem bosätta sig i sitt eget land.
Främlingar ska sluta sig till dem och förena sig med Jakobs släkt.
2 Folken ska föra dem tillbaka hem,
och israeliterna ska få dem till sin egendom i Herrens land,
som tjänare och tjänarinnor.
De som tillfångatog dem ska nu själva bli deras fångar,
och de ska regera över sina förtryckare.
Sång över den babyloniske kungens fall
3 Då låter Herren dig vila från ditt lidande och din oro och från den grymma slavtjänst som legat på dig, 4 och då ska du stämma upp denna nidvisa över kungen i Babylon:
Vilket slut har inte förtryckaren fått!
Det är slut med hans rasande framfart.[a]
5 Herren har krossat de gudlösas stav,
härskarnas spira,
6 den som i raseri gav folken slag efter slag
och i vrede höll folken i sitt skoningslösa grepp.
7 Men nu har hela jorden kommit till ro och är stilla.
Man brister ut i jubel.
8 Till och med cypresserna gläds över ditt fall,
liksom Libanons cedrar:
”Nu ligger du där,
och ingen kommer och fäller oss mer.”
9 Dödsriket där nere kommer i rörelse
för att möta dig när du kommer.
De döda väcks ur sin dvala[b],
jordens härskare
och alla folkens kungar
reser sig från sina troner.
10 Alla hälsar de dig och säger:
”Så du har också blivit svag som vi
och är nu lik oss.”
11 Ditt majestät har störtats ner till dödsriket,
tillsammans med ditt harpospel.
Din bädd är förruttnelse
och ditt täcke är maskar.
12 Hur har du inte fallit från himlen,
du morgonstjärna, du gryningens son!
Du har slagits till marken,
du som slog ner folken.
13 Du sa för dig själv:
”Jag ska stiga upp till himlen
och resa min tron ovanför Guds stjärnor.
Jag ska sätta mig på gudaförsamlingens berg
långt uppe i norr.
14 Jag ska stiga högre än molnen
och bli lik den Högste.”
15 Men i stället ska du kastas ner i dödsriket,
längst ner i avgrundens djup.
16 De som ser dig stirrar på dig
och betraktar dig:
”Är det här mannen som fick jorden att skaka
och kungadömena att darra,
17 han som förvandlade världen till en öken
och lade dess städer i ruiner
och som aldrig släppte sina fångar?”
18 Folkens kungar ligger med ära i sina gravar,
var och en i sitt vilorum,
19 men du ligger bortkastad utan grav,
som en avbruten gren,
täckt av de döda som stupat för svärd.
De läggs i gravrum av sten,
men du ligger som ett kadaver som man trampar på.[c]
20 Du får inte vila i en grav tillsammans med de andra,
för du har fördärvat ditt land och slagit ihjäl ditt folk.
De som kommit från denna onda ätt ska man aldrig mer tala om.
21 Gör i ordning en slaktplats för dess söner
för deras fäders synd.
De ska inte resa sig
och erövra landet,
inte breda ut sina städer över världen.
22 ”Jag ska själv resa mig mot honom,”
säger härskarornas Herre,
”och jag ska utrota ur Babylon både namn och de överlevande,
dess avkomma och ätt, säger Herren.
23 Jag ska förvandla platsen till en sumpmark och ett tillhåll för trappfåglar.
Med ödeläggelsens kvast ska jag sopa igen landet,” säger härskarornas Herre.
24 Härskarornas Herre har svurit och sagt:
”Det ska sannerligen ske som jag har planerat,
det ska bli som jag har bestämt.
25 Assyrierna i mitt land ska krossas,
på mina berg ska jag trampa ner dem.
Oket ska då lyftas av dem
och bördan från deras axlar.”
26 Detta är mitt beslut för hela jorden,
och detta är den hand som sträcker sig över alla folk.
27 För härskarornas Herre har beslutat det,
och vem kan göra det om intet?
Han har räckt ut sin hand,
och vem kan hindra honom?
Profetia över filistéerna
28 Denna profetia kom samma år som kung Achas dog:
29 Gläd dig inte, Filisteen,
över att staven som slog dig är sönderbruten.
För från ormens rot ska det komma en giftorm,
dess frukt ska bli en flygande orm.
30 De fattigaste bland fattiga ska finna bete
och de arma vila i trygghet.
Men er ska jag utplåna med hungersnöd
och slå ihjäl varje överlevande.
31 Gråt, du port! Klaga, du stad!
Du, hela Filisteen, ska smälta bort.
För en rök kommer norrifrån,
och ingen sackar efter i fiendernas led.[d]
32 Vad ska man svara det främmande folkets sändebud?
”Herren har grundat Sion,
och där finner de betryckta bland hans folk sin tillflykt.”

The Restoration of Jacob
14 (A)For the Lord will have compassion on Jacob and will again choose Israel, and (B)will set them in their own land, and (C)sojourners will join them and will attach themselves to the house of Jacob. 2 And (D)the peoples will take them and bring them to their place, and the house of Israel will possess them in the Lord's land (E)as male and female slaves.[a] (F)They will take captive those who were their captors, (G)and rule over those who oppressed them.
Israel's Remnant Taunts Babylon
3 When the Lord has given you rest from your pain and turmoil and the hard service with which you were made to serve, 4 you will take up this (H)taunt against the king of Babylon:
“How the oppressor has ceased,
(I)the insolent fury[b] ceased!
5 The Lord has broken the (J)staff of the wicked,
the (K)scepter of rulers,
6 (L)that struck the peoples in wrath
with unceasing blows,
that ruled the nations in anger
with unrelenting persecution.
7 The whole earth is at rest and quiet;
(M)they break forth into singing.
8 (N)(O)The cypresses rejoice at you,
(P)the cedars of Lebanon, saying,
‘Since you were laid low,
no woodcutter comes up against us.’
9 Sheol beneath is stirred up
to meet you when you come;
it rouses the shades to greet you,
all who were leaders of the earth;
it raises from their thrones
all who were kings of the nations.
10 (Q)All of them will answer
and say to you:
‘You too have become as weak as we!
You have become like us!’
11 Your pomp is brought down to Sheol,
the sound of your harps;
maggots are laid as a bed beneath you,
and worms are your covers.
12 “How (R)you are fallen from heaven,
O Day Star, (S)son of Dawn!
How you are cut down to the ground,
you who laid the nations low!
13 You said in your heart,
(T)‘I will ascend to heaven;
above the stars of God
(U)I will set my throne on high;
I will sit on the mount of assembly
in the far reaches of the north;[c]
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds;
I will make myself like the Most High.’
15 (V)But you are brought down to Sheol,
to the far reaches of the pit.
16 Those who see you will stare at you
and ponder over you:
‘Is this (W)the man who made the earth tremble,
who shook kingdoms,
17 who made the world like a desert
and overthrew its cities,
(X)who did not let his prisoners go home?’
18 All the kings of the nations lie in glory,
each in his own tomb;[d]
19 but you are cast out, away from your grave,
like a loathed branch,
(Y)clothed with the slain, those pierced by the sword,
who go down to the stones of the pit,
like a dead body trampled underfoot.
20 You will not be joined with them in burial,
because you have destroyed your land,
you have slain your people.
“May (Z)the offspring of evildoers
nevermore be named!
21 Prepare slaughter for his sons
(AA)because of the guilt of their fathers,
lest they rise and possess the earth,
and fill the face of the world with cities.”
22 “I will rise up against them,” declares the Lord of hosts, “and will cut off from Babylon name and (AB)remnant, (AC)descendants and posterity,” declares the Lord. 23 “And I will make it a possession of the (AD)hedgehog,[e] and pools of water, and I will sweep it with the broom of destruction,” declares the Lord of hosts.
An Oracle Concerning Assyria
24 The Lord of hosts has sworn:
(AE)“As I have planned,
so shall it be,
and as I have purposed,
so shall it stand,
25 that (AF)I will break the Assyrian in my land,
and on my mountains trample him underfoot;
and (AG)his yoke shall depart from them,
and (AH)his burden from their shoulder.”
26 This is the purpose that is purposed
concerning the whole earth,
and this is (AI)the hand that is stretched out
over all the nations.
27 (AJ)For the Lord of hosts has purposed,
and who will annul it?
(AK)His hand is stretched out,
and who will turn it back?
An Oracle Concerning Philistia
28 In the year that (AL)King Ahaz died came this (AM)oracle:
29 Rejoice not, (AN)O Philistia, all of you,
that (AO)the rod that struck you is broken,
for from the serpent's root will come forth an adder,
and its fruit will be a (AP)flying fiery serpent.
30 And the firstborn of (AQ)the poor will graze,
and (AR)the needy lie down in safety;
but I will kill your root with famine,
and your remnant it will slay.
31 (AS)Wail, O (AT)gate; cry out, O city;
melt in fear, (AU)O Philistia, all of you!
(AV)For smoke comes out of the north,
and there is no straggler in his ranks.
32 What will one answer the messengers of the nation?
(AW)“The Lord has founded Zion,
and in her the afflicted of his people find refuge.”

14 For Yahweh will have compassion on Jacob, and will yet choose Israel, and set them in their own land. The foreigner will join himself with them, and they will unite with the house of Jacob. 2 The peoples will take them, and bring them to their place. The house of Israel will possess them in Yahweh’s land for servants and for handmaids. They will take as captives those whose captives they were; and they shall rule over their oppressors.
3 It will happen in the day that Yahweh will give you rest from your sorrow, from your trouble, and from the hard service in which you were made to serve, 4 that you will take up this parable against the king of Babylon, and say, “How the oppressor has ceased! The golden city has ceased!” 5 Yahweh has broken the staff of the wicked, the scepter of the rulers, 6 who struck the peoples in wrath with a continual stroke, who ruled the nations in anger, with a persecution that no one restrained. 7 The whole earth is at rest, and is quiet. They break out in song. 8 Yes, the cypress trees rejoice with you, with the cedars of Lebanon, saying, “Since you are humbled, no lumberjack has come up against us.” 9 Sheol[a] from beneath has moved for you to meet you at your coming. It stirs up the departed spirits for you, even all the rulers of the earth. It has raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations. 10 They all will answer and ask you, “Have you also become as weak as we are? Have you become like us?” 11 Your pomp is brought down to Sheol,[b] with the sound of your stringed instruments. Maggots are spread out under you, and worms cover you.
12 How you have fallen from heaven, shining one, son of the dawn! How you are cut down to the ground, who laid the nations low! 13 You said in your heart, “I will ascend into heaven! I will exalt my throne above the stars of God! I will sit on the mountain of assembly, in the far north! 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds! I will make myself like the Most High!” 15 Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol,[c] to the depths of the pit. 16 Those who see you will stare at you. They will ponder you, saying, “Is this the man who made the earth to tremble, who shook kingdoms, 17 who made the world like a wilderness, and overthrew its cities, who didn’t release his prisoners to their home?”
18 All the kings of the nations sleep in glory, everyone in his own house. 19 But you are cast away from your tomb like an abominable branch, clothed with the slain who are thrust through with the sword, who go down to the stones of the pit; like a dead body trodden under foot. 20 You will not join them in burial, because you have destroyed your land. You have killed your people. The offspring of evildoers will not be named forever.
21 Prepare for slaughter of his children because of the iniquity of their fathers, that they not rise up and possess the earth, and fill the surface of the world with cities. 22 “I will rise up against them,” says Yahweh of Armies, “and cut off from Babylon name and remnant, and son and son’s son,” says Yahweh. 23 “I will also make it a possession for the porcupine, and pools of water. I will sweep it with the broom of destruction,” says Yahweh of Armies.
24 Yahweh of Armies has sworn, saying, “Surely, as I have thought, so shall it happen; and as I have purposed, so shall it stand: 25 that I will break the Assyrian in my land, and tread him under foot on my mountains. Then his yoke will leave them, and his burden leave their shoulders. 26 This is the plan that is determined for the whole earth. This is the hand that is stretched out over all the nations. 27 For Yahweh of Armies has planned, and who can stop it? His hand is stretched out, and who can turn it back?”
28 This burden was in the year that King Ahaz died.
29 Don’t rejoice, O Philistia, all of you, because the rod that struck you is broken; for out of the serpent’s root an adder will emerge, and his fruit will be a fiery flying serpent. 30 The firstborn of the poor will eat, and the needy will lie down in safety; and I will kill your root with famine, and your remnant will be killed.
31 Howl, gate! Cry, city! You are melted away, Philistia, all of you; for smoke comes out of the north, and there is no straggler in his ranks.
32 What will they answer the messengers of the nation? That Yahweh has founded Zion, and in her the afflicted of his people will take refuge.

14 The Lord will have compassion(A) on Jacob;
once again he will choose(B) Israel
and will settle them in their own land.(C)
Foreigners(D) will join them
and unite with the descendants of Jacob.
2 Nations will take them
and bring(E) them to their own place.
And Israel will take possession of the nations(F)
and make them male and female servants in the Lord’s land.
They will make captives(G) of their captors
and rule over their oppressors.(H)
3 On the day the Lord gives you relief(I) from your suffering and turmoil(J) and from the harsh labor forced on you,(K) 4 you will take up this taunt(L) against the king of Babylon:(M)
How the oppressor(N) has come to an end!
How his fury[a] has ended!
5 The Lord has broken the rod(O) of the wicked,(P)
the scepter(Q) of the rulers,
6 which in anger struck down peoples(R)
with unceasing blows,
and in fury subdued(S) nations
with relentless aggression.(T)
7 All the lands are at rest and at peace;(U)
they break into singing.(V)
8 Even the junipers(W) and the cedars of Lebanon
gloat over you and say,
“Now that you have been laid low,
no one comes to cut us down.”(X)
9 The realm of the dead(Y) below is all astir
to meet you at your coming;
it rouses the spirits of the departed(Z) to greet you—
all those who were leaders(AA) in the world;
it makes them rise from their thrones—
all those who were kings over the nations.(AB)
10 They will all respond,
they will say to you,
“You also have become weak, as we are;
you have become like us.”(AC)
11 All your pomp has been brought down to the grave,(AD)
along with the noise of your harps;(AE)
maggots are spread out beneath you

morning star,(AI) son of the dawn!

I will make myself like the Most High.”(AP)
15 But you are brought down(AQ) to the realm of the dead,(AR)
to the depths(AS) of the pit.(AT)
16 Those who see you stare at you,
they ponder your fate:(AU)
“Is this the man who shook(AV) the earth
and made kingdoms tremble,
17 the man who made the world a wilderness,(AW)
who overthrew(AX) its cities
and would not let his captives go home?”(AY)
18 All the kings of the nations lie in state,
each in his own tomb.(AZ)
19 But you are cast out(BA) of your tomb
like a rejected branch;
you are covered with the slain,(BB)
with those pierced by the sword,(BC)
those who descend to the stones of the pit.(BD)
Like a corpse trampled underfoot,
20 you will not join them in burial,(BE)
for you have destroyed your land
and killed your people.
Let the offspring(BF) of the wicked(BG)
never be mentioned(BH) again.
21 Prepare a place to slaughter his children(BI)
for the sins of their ancestors;(BJ)
they are not to rise to inherit the land
and cover the earth with their cities.
22 “I will rise up(BK) against them,”
declares the Lord Almighty.
“I will wipe out Babylon’s name(BL) and survivors,
her offspring and descendants,(BM)”
declares the Lord.
23 “I will turn her into a place for owls(BN)
and into swampland;
I will sweep her with the broom of destruction,(BO)”
declares the Lord Almighty.(BP)
24 The Lord Almighty has sworn,(BQ)
“Surely, as I have planned,(BR) so it will be,
and as I have purposed, so it will happen.(BS)
25 I will crush the Assyrian(BT) in my land;
on my mountains I will trample him down.
His yoke(BU) will be taken from my people,
and his burden removed from their shoulders.(BV)”
26 This is the plan(BW) determined for the whole world;
this is the hand(BX) stretched out over all nations.
27 For the Lord Almighty has purposed,(BY) and who can thwart him?
His hand(BZ) is stretched out, and who can turn it back?(CA)
A Prophecy Against the Philistines
28 This prophecy(CB) came in the year(CC) King Ahaz(CD) died:
29 Do not rejoice, all you Philistines,(CE)
that the rod that struck you is broken;
from the root of that snake will spring up a viper,(CF)
its fruit will be a darting, venomous serpent.(CG)
30 The poorest of the poor will find pasture,
and the needy(CH) will lie down in safety.(CI)
But your root I will destroy by famine;(CJ)
it will slay(CK) your survivors.(CL)
31 Wail,(CM) you gate!(CN) Howl, you city!
Melt away, all you Philistines!(CO)
A cloud of smoke comes from the north,(CP)
and there is not a straggler in its ranks.(CQ)
32 What answer shall be given
to the envoys(CR) of that nation?
“The Lord has established Zion,(CS)
and in her his afflicted people will find refuge.(CT)”
