9 Now the first covenant had both regulations for worship and a Holy Place here on earth. 2 A tent was set up, the outer one, which was called the Holy Place; in it were the menorah, the table and the Bread of the Presence. 3 Behind the second parokhet was a tent called the Holiest Place, 4 which had the golden altar for burning incense and the Ark of the Covenant, entirely covered with gold. In the Ark were the gold jar containing the man, Aharon’s rod that sprouted and the stone Tablets of the Covenant; 5 and above it were the k’ruvim representing the Sh’khinah, casting their shadow on the lid of the Ark — but now is not the time to discuss these things in detail.
6 With things so arranged, the cohanim go into the outer tent all the time to discharge their duties; 7 but only the cohen hagadol enters the inner one; and he goes in only once a year, and he must always bring blood, which he offers both for himself and for the sins committed in ignorance by the people. 8 By this arrangement, the Ruach HaKodesh showed that so long as the first Tent had standing, the way into the Holiest Place was still closed. 9 This symbolizes the present age and indicates that the conscience of the person performing the service cannot be brought to the goal by the gifts and sacrifices he offers. 10 For they involve only food and drink and various ceremonial washings — regulations concerning the outward life, imposed until the time for God to reshape the whole structure.
11 But when the Messiah appeared as cohen gadol of the good things that are happening already, then, through the greater and more perfect Tent which is not man-made (that is, it is not of this created world), 12 he entered the Holiest Place once and for all.
And he entered not by means of the blood of goats and calves, but by means of his own blood, thus setting people free forever. 13 For if sprinkling ceremonially unclean persons with the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer restores their outward purity; 14 then how much more the blood of the Messiah, who, through the eternal Spirit, offered himself to God as a sacrifice without blemish, will purify our conscience from works that lead to death, so that we can serve the living God!
15 It is because of this death that he is mediator of a new covenant [or will].[a] Because a death has occurred which sets people free from the transgressions committed under the first covenant, those who have been called may receive the promised eternal inheritance. 16 For where there is a will, there must necessarily be produced evidence of its maker’s death, 17 since a will goes into effect only upon death; it never has force while its maker is still alive.
18 This is why the first covenant too was inaugurated with blood. 19 After Moshe had proclaimed every command of the Torah to all the people, he took the blood of the calves with some water and used scarlet wool and hyssop to sprinkle both the scroll itself and all the people; 20 and he said, “This is the blood of the covenant which God has ordained for you.”[b] 21 Likewise, he sprinkled with the blood both the Tent and all the things used in its ceremonies. 22 In fact, according to the Torah, almost everything is purified with blood; indeed, without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.
23 Now this is how the copies of the heavenly things had to be purified, but the heavenly things themselves require better sacrifices than these. 24 For the Messiah has entered a Holiest Place which is not man-made and merely a copy of the true one, but into heaven itself, in order to appear now on our behalf in the very presence of God.
25 Further, he did not enter heaven to offer himself over and over again, like the cohen hagadol who enters the Holiest Place year after year with blood that is not his own; 26 for then he would have had to suffer death many times — from the founding of the universe on. But as it is, he has appeared once at the end of the ages in order to do away with sin through the sacrifice of himself. 27 Just as human beings have to die once, but after this comes judgment, 28 so also the Messiah, having been offered once to bear the sins of many,[c] will appear a second time, not to deal with sin, but to deliver those who are eagerly waiting for him.

Het volmaakte offer voor de zonde
9 Bij het eerste verbond gaf God de mensen regels waaraan zij zich moesten houden als zij Hem dienden in de heilige tent, de Tabernakel. 2 Deze tent werd in tweeën verdeeld. In het eerste deel kwamen de kandelaar en de tafel met de heilige broden te staan. Dat deel heette het Heilige. 3 Dan hing er een zwaar gordijn en daarachter was het Allerheiligste. 4 Daar stonden het gouden wierookaltaar en de ark van het verbond. De ark was aan alle kanten met goud bedekt. In de ark lagen de stenen plaquettes waarop de wetten stonden, een gouden pot met manna en de staf van Aäron die gebloeid had. 5 Over het deksel van de ark spreidden de schitterende cherubs hun vleugels uit. Dat gouden deksel was de plaats waar men God om vergeving vroeg. Maar daar zullen we nu niet verder op ingaan.
6 Toen alles klaar was, gingen de priesters het voorste deel zo vaak binnen als voor hun werk nodig was. 7 Maar in het achterste deel mocht alleen de hogepriester komen en dan nog maar één keer per jaar. Hij moest bloed meenemen en dat op het gouden deksel van de ark sprenkelen om daarmee zijn eigen zonden en die van het hele volk voor God te bedekken. 8 De Heilige Geest wilde daarmee duidelijk maken dat men niet in het Allerheiligste kon komen, zolang de tent van het eerste verbond nog dienst deed. 9 Hieruit kunnen wij een belangrijke les leren. Ook al werden al deze gaven en offers gebracht, ze konden het geweten van de mensen toch niet zuiveren. 10 Het ging alleen om bepaalde gebruiken: wat men wel en niet mocht eten en drinken, waarom en hoe men zich moest wassen. De mensen moesten zich eraan houden zolang Christus nog niet met Gods nieuwe, betere verbond was gekomen.
11 Christus kwam als hogepriester van het nieuwe verbond dat wij nu hebben. Hij is de grotere en meer volmaakte tent in de hemel binnengegaan, die niet door mensen is gemaakt en niet tot deze wereld behoort. 12 Eens en voor altijd ging Hij met bloed het Allerheiligste binnen en sprenkelde het op de plaats waar de zonden worden vergeven. Maar dat was niet het bloed van bokken en kalveren, nee, het was zijn eigen bloed. En daarmee heeft Hij ons voor eeuwig van de zonde bevrijd. 13 Als het bloed van bokken en stieren en de as van jonge koeien van zonden konden reinigen, 14 hoeveel te meer zal dan het bloed van Christus ons hart en leven veranderen. Hij, die Zelf zonder zonden is, heeft door de hulp van de eeuwige Geest Zich gewillig aan God overgegeven om voor onze zonden te sterven. Daardoor wordt ons geweten gezuiverd van daden die tot de dood leiden en kunnen wij de levende God dienen. 15 Hij heeft ervoor gezorgd dat er een nieuw verbond kwam, zodat iedereen mag komen om te genieten van de rijkdom die God beloofd heeft. Christus is gestorven om hen te redden van de straf die zij verdienden door de zonden die zij onder het oude verbond hadden gedaan.
16 Met dit verbond dat God met ons heeft gesloten, is het net als met een testament, er moet eerst iemand sterven, voordat het van kracht wordt. 17 Aan een testament heb je pas iets als de man of vrouw die het gemaakt heeft, gestorven is. Want zolang die leeft, kan niemand een beroep op dat testament doen. 18 Daarom werd het eerste verbond tussen God en zijn volk pas van kracht nadat het met bloed was ingewijd. 19 Want toen Mozes het volk al Gods wetten had voorgelezen, nam Hij bloed van kalveren en bokken en sprenkelde dat met water, rode wol en hysop over de stenen plaquettes en het hele volk: 20 ‘Dit bloed bevestigt het verbond dat God u heeft opgelegd,’ zei hij. 21 Op dezelfde manier sprenkelde hij bloed op de heilige tent en op alle toebehoren dat werd gebruikt voor de eredienst.
22 Wij mogen wel zeggen dat onder het oude verbond vrijwel alles door bloed gereinigd werd. Als er geen bloed vloeit, worden de zonden niet vergeven. 23 Daarom moest Mozes alles wat hij naar het hemelse voorbeeld had gemaakt, de heilige tent en alles wat er in was, reinigen door het bloed van dieren. Maar de werkelijke dingen in de hemelen worden door veel betere offers gereinigd. 24 Christus is het heiligdom binnengegaan om in onze plaats voor God te verschijnen. Hij deed dat niet in het heiligdom dat door mensen was gemaakt, want dat was slechts een afbeelding van het werkelijke heiligdom in de hemel. 25 Hij heeft Zich ook niet telkens weer geofferd, zoals de hogepriester, die elk jaar weer het Allerheiligste moest binnengaan om dierlijk bloed te offeren. 26 Als dat nodig was geweest, had Hij vanaf het begin van de wereld telkens weer moeten lijden en sterven. Maar nu, tegen het einde van de eeuwen, is Hij eens en voor altijd gekomen om voor ons te sterven en de zonde weg te doen. 27 Zo zeker als alle mensen eenmaal sterven en daarna beoordeeld worden, 28 zo zeker zal Christus—nu Hij eenmaal gestorven is om de zonden van vele mensen weg te nemen—nogmaals verschijnen, nu niet om de zonde weg te nemen, maar om ieder te redden die verlangend naar Hem uitziet.

9 Ngayon, maging ang unang tipan ay mayroong mga alituntunin sa pagsamba at banal na dako para sa pagsamba dito sa lupa. 2 Itinayo (A) ang tabernakulo na may dalawang bahagi. Sa unang bahagi ay naroroon ang ilawan, ang hapag, at ang mga tinapay na handog; tinatawag ito na Dakong Banal. 3 Sa (B) kabila ng ikalawang tabing ay ang silid na tinatawag na Dakong Kabanal-banalan. 4 Nasa (C) silid na ito ang gintong dambana ng insenso at ang Kaban ng Tipan na nababalutan ng ginto. Nasa loob ng Kaban ang sisidlang-ginto na may lamang manna, ang namulaklak na tungkod ni Aaron, at ang mga tapyas ng bato na kinasusulatan ng tipan. 5 Naroon sa (D) ibabaw ng kaban ang mga maluwalhating kerubin. Ang mga pakpak nila ay lumililim sa luklukan ng habag. Hindi na natin mapag-uusapan ang mga ito ng isa-isa. 6 Pagkatapos (E) maihanda ang lahat tulad nito, ang mga pari ay patuloy na pumapasok sa unang silid upang gampanan ang kanilang banal na tungkulin. 7 Ngunit (F) ang Kataas-taasang Pari lamang ang pumapasok sa ikalawang silid, at ito'y minsan lamang sa isang taon. Hindi niya kinaliligtaang magdala ng dugo bilang handog para sa kanyang kasalanan at sa mga kasalanang di-sinasadyang nagawa ng taong-bayan. 8 Sa pamamagitan nito, itinuturo ng Banal na Espiritu na ang daan patungo sa Dakong Kabanal-banalan ay hindi pa naihahayag, habang nakatayo pa ang unang tabernakulo. 9 Sumasagisag ito sa kasalukuyang panahon, na nagpapakita na ang mga kaloob at ang mga alay na ihinahandog ay hindi makapaglilinis sa budhi ng sumasamba. 10 Ang mga ito ay tungkol lamang sa mga pagkain at mga inumin at iba't ibang uri ng seremonya ng paglilinis,[a] mga alituntunin tungkol sa katawan na ipinatutupad hanggang dumating ang panahon ng pagbabago ng lahat ng bagay.
11 Ngunit nang dumating si Cristo bilang Kataas-taasang Pari ng mabubuting bagay na dumating na, pumasok siya sa mas dakila at mas sakdal na tabernakulo na hindi gawa ng mga kamay ng tao, samakatuwid ay hindi bahagi ng sangnilikhang ito. 12 Minsan lamang siya pumasok sa Dakong Kabanal-banalan, at ang bisa nito'y magpakailanman. Sa kanyang pagpasok, hindi dugo ng mga kambing at ng mga toro ang kanyang ihinandog, kundi ang kanyang sariling dugo, at dahil dito ay nakamit natin ang walang hangang katubusan. 13 Sapagkat (G) kung nakapaglilinis ng pagkatao ang dugo ng mga kambing at ng mga toro, kasama ang abo ng dumalagang baka, kung ang mga ito ay iwiniwisik sa mga taong itinuturing na marumi upang sila’y gawing malinis, 14 higit ang nagagawa ng dugo ni Cristo! Sa pamamagitan ng walang hanggang Espiritu ay walang dungis na ihinandog niya ang kanyang sarili sa Diyos, upang linisin ang ating mga budhi mula sa mga gawang patay upang tayo'y maglingkod sa Diyos na buháy.
15 At dahil dito, si Cristo ang tagapamagitan ng isang bagong tipan. Dahil sa kanyang kamatayan na tumutubos sa mga tao mula sa mga paglabag na nagawa nila noong sila'y nasa ilalim pa ng unang tipan, ang mga tinawag ay tatanggap ng ipinangakong pamanang walang hanggan. 16 Kapag mayroong kasulatan ng tipan, kailangang patunayan na patay na ang gumawa nito. 17 Nagkakabisa lamang ang tipan kapag ang gumawa nito ay namatay na.Wala itong bisa habang buháy pa ang tao na gumawa nito. 18 Maging ang unang tipan ay hindi pinagtibay nang walang dugo. 19 Sapagkat (H) pagkatapos sabihin ni Moises sa buong bayan ang lahat ng sinasabi ng Kautusan na dapat nilang gawin, kumuha siya ng dugo ng baka at ng mga kambing, na may tubig at gamit ang mapulang balahibo at isopo ay winisikan niya ang aklat at ang buong bayan. 20 Kasabay nito ay kanyang sinabi, “Ito ang dugo ng tipan na ipinag-utos ng Diyos sa inyo.” 21 Sa gayon ding paraan, winisikan (I) din ni Moises ng dugo ang tabernakulo at ang lahat ng mga kasangkapang ginagamit sa pagsamba. 22 Sa (J) katunayan, itinatakda ng Kautusan na halos lahat ng bagay ay dapat linisin sa pamamagitan ng dugo, at kung walang pagdanak ng dugo ay walang kapatawaran ng mga kasalanan.
Ang Alay na Nag-aalis ng Kasalanan
23 Kaya't kailangan na ang mga larawan ng mga bagay na panlangit ay linisin sa pamamagitan ng ganitong mga alay. Ngunit ang mga bagay sa kalangitan ay dapat linisin sa pamamagitan ng mga handog na mas mabuti kaysa mga ito. 24 Sapagkat si Cristo ay mismong sa langit pumasok at hindi sa santuwaryong gawa ng mga kamay ng tao, na larawan lamang ng mga tunay na bagay. Ngayo'y nasa harap siya ng Diyos upang dumulog para sa atin. 25 Naroon siya hindi upang ihandog ng maraming ulit ang kanyang sarili, hindi tulad ng Kataas-taasang Pari ng mga Judio na pumapasok sa Dakong Kabanal-banalan taun-taon at may dalang dugo na hindi naman sa kanya. 26 Sapagkat kung ihahandog niya ang kanyang sarili taun-taon, kailangan siyang paulit-ulit na maghirap mula pa nang lalangin ang sanlibutan. Subalit ngayon, minsanan siyang nagpakita sa pagtatapos ng panahon upang pawiin ang kasalanan sa pamamagitan ng pag-aalay ng kanyang sarili. 27 Itinakda sa mga tao ang mamatay na minsan, at pagkatapos nito ay ang paghuhukom. 28 Gayundin (K) naman, minsanang ihinandog si Cristo upang pasanin ang kasalanan ng marami. Magpapakita siya sa ikalawang pagkakataon, hindi na upang pasanin ang kasalanan, kundi upang iligtas ang mga sabik na naghihintay sa kanya.
