31 CHÚA phán, “Lúc đó ta sẽ làm Thượng Đế cho cả dòng họ Ít-ra-en, họ sẽ làm dân ta.”
2 CHÚA phán như sau:
“Những người không bị giết bằng gươm của kẻ thù
nhận được sự giúp đỡ trong sa mạc.
Ta đến để ban cho Ít-ra-en sự nghỉ ngơi.”
3 Và từ xa CHÚA hiện ra cùng dân Ngài và nói,
“Ta yêu các ngươi bằng tình yêu còn đời đời.
Vì thế ta đã luôn tỏ lòng nhân từ cùng các ngươi.
4 Hỡi dân Ít-ra-en, ta sẽ nâng đỡ các ngươi trở lại,
ngươi sẽ được phục hưng.
Ngươi sẽ lại cầm trống cơm
và nhảy múa với những kẻ vui mừng.
5 Ngươi sẽ lại trồng vườn nho
trên các đồi quanh Xa-ma-ri.
Các nông gia sẽ trồng nho và hưởng hoa quả.
6 Sẽ đến lúc những lính canh [a]
trong vùng núi Ép-ra-im [b] hô to như sau:
‘Chúng ta hãy lên Giê-ru-sa-lem
để thờ lạy CHÚA là Thượng Đế chúng ta!’”
7 Vì CHÚA phán như sau:
“Hãy vui mừng xướng hát cho dân Gia-cốp.
Hãy la to lên cho Ít-ra-en,
dân tộc nổi danh nhất trên thế gian.
Hãy hát bài ca ngợi và la to lên như sau:
‘CHÚA đã cứu dân Ngài [c],
là những người còn sống sót
trong quốc gia Ít-ra-en!’
8 Nầy, ta sẽ mang Ít-ra-en về từ xứ miền Bắc,
và gom họ lại từ các nơi xa xăm trên đất.
Một số bị mù lòa và què quặt.
Một số đàn bà đang mang thai,
một số khác sắp sinh đẻ.
Nhiều người sẽ trở về.
9 Họ sẽ vừa về vừa khóc,
nhưng họ sẽ cầu nguyện
khi ta mang họ trở về.
Ta sẽ dẫn dắt họ bên suối nước,
trên đường bằng phẳng để họ không ngã té.
Vì ta là cha của Ít-ra-en,
và Ít-ra-en là con đầu lòng của ta.
10 Hỡi các dân, hãy nghe lời CHÚA phán.
Hãy thuật lại sứ điệp nầy
trong các xứ duyên hải xa xôi.
‘Đấng phân tán dân Ít-ra-en sẽ mang họ trở về,
và Ngài sẽ coi sóc dân Ngài như người chăn chiên.’
11 Thật vậy, CHÚA sẽ chuộc lại dân Gia-cốp
và sẽ mang họ về từ những dân mạnh hơn họ.
12 Dân Ít-ra-en sẽ đến trên đỉnh núi Xi-ôn
và la hét vui mừng.
Gương mặt họ sẽ sáng rỡ lên
với vẻ hớn hở về những ơn lành từ CHÚA:
nào ngũ cốc, rượu mới, dầu, chiên con, và bò con.
Họ sẽ như vườn nhiều nước,
và sẽ không gặp khốn khó nữa.
13 Lúc đó các thiếu nữ Ít-ra-en
sẽ vui mừng nhảy múa,
và các thanh niên cùng người già cả cũng vậy.
Ta sẽ biến sự buồn bã của họ ra vui mừng,
Ta sẽ ban cho họ niềm yên ủi
và vui mừng thay vì sầu não.
14 Các thầy tế lễ sẽ có dư dật của lễ,
và dân ta sẽ đầy dẫy những vật tốt
mà ta ban cho!” CHÚA phán vậy.
15 CHÚA phán: “Có âm thanh vang lên từ Ra-ma,
tiếng khóc thảm sầu cay đắng.
Đó là tiếng Ra-chên [d] khóc con cái mình.
Nàng không khuây khỏa được,
vì chúng nó chết rồi!”
16 Nhưng CHÚA phán như sau: “Đừng khóc nữa;
đừng để mắt ngươi đẫm lệ.
Ngươi sẽ được đền bù công khó mình!” CHÚA phán vậy.
“Dân chúng sẽ trở về từ xứ quân thù.
17 Cho nên ngươi sẽ có hi vọng trong tương lai,” CHÚA phán vậy.
“Con cái ngươi sẽ trở về xứ mình.
18 Ta đã nghe Ít-ra-en than vãn:
‘Lạy CHÚA, Ngài trừng phạt tôi,
và tôi đã học được bài học.
Tôi như bò con chưa hề mang ách.
Xin hãy mang tôi về để tôi có thể trở về nhà.
Ngài thật là CHÚA và Thượng Đế tôi.
19 Thật vậy, lạy CHÚA, sau khi đã lạc xa khỏi Ngài,
tôi đã thay đổi lòng và nếp sống.
Sau khi tôi đã hiểu, tôi đấm ngực ân hận.
Tôi bị hổ nhục,
vì tôi đã phải chịu khổ,
do những điều dại dột tôi làm khi còn trẻ.’”
20 “Các ngươi biết rằng Ít-ra-en
là con yêu dấu của ta, đứa con ta yêu.
Đành rằng ta thường nói nghịch cùng Ít-ra-en,
nhưng ta vẫn hằng nhớ nó,
ta rất yêu thương nó,
muốn an ủi nó,” CHÚA phán vậy.
21 “Hỡi dân Ít-ra-en, hãy sửa lại các bảng chỉ đường.
Hãy dựng bảng để chỉ đường về nhà.
Hãy canh chừng đường đi.
Hãy nhớ lại lối ngươi ra đi.
Hỡi dân Ít-ra-en, hãy trở về,
Hãy trở về thị trấn quê quán ngươi.
22 Ngươi là đứa con gái hư hỏng.
Ngươi sẽ đi lang thang bao lâu nữa
trước khi trở về nhà?
Vì CHÚA đã làm một điều mới lạ trong xứ:
Đàn bà đi tìm đàn ông [e].”
23 CHÚA Toàn Năng, Thượng Đế của Ít-ra-en phán: “Ta sẽ làm những điều tốt lành cho dân Giu-đa lần nữa. Lúc đó dân trong xứ Giu-đa và các thị trấn sẽ lại dùng những lời nầy: ‘Nguyện CHÚA ban phước cho ngươi, là nơi ở và núi thánh tốt đẹp [f].’ 24 Dân chúng sống trong các thành Giu-đa sẽ ở bình yên với nhau. Nông gia và dân du mục sẽ sống bình yên với nhau. 25 Ta sẽ ban sự yên nghỉ và sức mạnh cho những kẻ yếu ớt và mệt mỏi.”
26 Sau khi nghe như vậy, tôi, Giê-rê-mi, thức giấc và nhìn quanh quất. Giấc ngủ tôi rất ngon.
27 CHÚA phán, “Ngươi phải biết rằng, sẽ đến ngày ta giúp các gia đình Ít-ra-en, Giu-đa cùng con cái và súc vật của chúng sinh sôi nẩy nở. 28 Trước kia ta trông chừng Ít-ra-en và Giu-đa để nhổ lên và phá sập, để tiêu diệt và mang tai họa đến. Nhưng nay ta sẽ trông chừng chúng để xây lên và khiến chúng mạnh mẽ,” CHÚA phán vậy.
29 Lúc đó người ta sẽ không còn nói:
“Cha mẹ ăn trái nho chua mà con cháu phải buốt răng [g].”
30 Nhưng mỗi người sẽ chết vì tội lỗi mình; ai ăn trái nho chua thì người đó bị buốt răng.
Giao ước mới
31 CHÚA phán, “Nầy, sẽ đến lúc
ta lập một giao ước mới
với dân Ít-ra-en và dân Giu-đa.
32 Không giống như giao ước ta đã lập
với tổ tiên chúng khi ta dắt tay chúng ra khỏi Ai-cập.
Lúc đó ta làm chồng chúng nó,
nhưng chúng phá giao ước ấy,” CHÚA phán vậy.
33 “Nhưng đây là giao ước ta sẽ lập
với dân Ít-ra-en vào lúc đó,”
CHÚA phán:
“Ta sẽ để lời giáo huấn ta trong trí chúng,
ghi tạc vào lòng chúng.
Ta sẽ làm Thượng Đế chúng,
và chúng sẽ làm dân ta.
34 Người ta không cần phải dạy láng giềng
hay thân nhân để biết CHÚA nữa,
vì mọi người đều sẽ biết ta,
từ người thấp kém nhất
cho đến người sang trọng nhất,” CHÚA phán vậy.
“Ta sẽ tha thứ chúng vì những điều ác chúng làm,
ta sẽ không nhớ đến tội lỗi chúng nữa.”
Chúa sẽ không bao giờ lìa bỏ Ít-ra-en
35 CHÚA khiến mặt trời soi sáng ban ngày,
mặt trăng và ngôi sao soi sáng ban đêm.
Ngài khuấy động biển
để các ngọn sóng đập vào bờ.
Danh Ngài là CHÚA Toàn Năng.
CHÚA phán như sau:
36 “Chỉ khi nào các luật thiên nhiên đó không hiệu nghiệm nữa,
thì con cháu Ít-ra-en mới không còn là dân tộc trước mặt ta.” CHÚA phán vậy.
37 CHÚA phán như sau:
“Chỉ khi nào người ta có thể đo được bầu trời cao kia
hay biết được những bí mật dưới đất nầy,
thì ta mới gạt bỏ con cháu Ít-ra-en,
về những điều chúng làm,” CHÚA phán vậy.
Giê-ru-sa-lem mới
38 CHÚA phán, “Ngươi phải biết rằng, sẽ đến lúc Giê-ru-sa-lem được xây lại cho ta; tất cả mọi thứ từ tháp Ha-na-nên cho đến Cổng Góc. 39 Dây đo [h] sẽ giăng từ Cổng Góc thẳng cho đến đồi Ga-rép. Rồi sẽ xoay qua một nơi gọi là Gô-a. 40 Toàn thung lũng nơi người ta ném các xác chết và tro, cùng toàn vùng đất cao cho đến thung lũng Kít-rôn về phía Đông cho đến góc của Cổng Ngựa, tất cả vùng đó sẽ hóa thánh cho CHÚA. Giê-ru-sa-lem sẽ không bao giờ bị phá sập hay tiêu hủy nữa.”

- Giê-rê-mi-a 31:15 Ra-chên Vợ của Gia-cốp. Đây có nghĩa là tất cả những đàn bà khóc cho chồng con mình đã chết trong cuộc chiến tranh với Ba-by-lôn.
- Giê-rê-mi-a 31:22 Đàn bà đi tìm đàn ông Hay “đàn bà vây quanh đàn ông.” Bản Hê-bơ-rơ ở chỗ nầy hơi khó hiểu. Có thể đây là một câu ngạn ngữ thông dụng vào thời Giê-rê-mi.
- Giê-rê-mi-a 31:23 nơi ở và núi thánh tốt đẹp Đây là một lời chúc lành cho đền thờ và núi Xi-ôn, tức đỉnh núi mà đền thờ được xây lên.
- Giê-rê-mi-a 31:29 Cha mẹ … buốt răng Hay “ghê răng.” Nghĩa là con cái phải chịu hình phạt vì tội lỗi của cha mẹ.
- Giê-rê-mi-a 31:39 Dây đo Một sợi dây hay thừng dùng để đo ranh giới của đất đai.

The Lord Will Turn Mourning to Joy
31 (A)“At that time, declares the Lord, (B)I will be the God of all the clans of Israel, and they shall be my people.”
2 Thus says the Lord:
“The people who survived the sword
found grace in the wilderness;
(C)when Israel sought for rest,
3 the Lord appeared to him[a] from far away.
(D)I have loved you with an everlasting love;
therefore (E)I have continued (F)my faithfulness to you.
4 (G)Again I will build you, and you shall be built,
O virgin Israel!
(H)Again you shall adorn yourself with tambourines
and shall go forth in (I)the dance of the merrymakers.
5 (J)Again you shall plant vineyards
on the mountains of Samaria;
the planters shall plant
and shall enjoy the fruit.
6 For there shall be a day when watchmen will call
in (K)the hill country of Ephraim:
(L)‘Arise, and let us go up to Zion,
to the Lord our God.’”
7 For thus says the Lord:
(M)“Sing aloud with gladness for Jacob,
and raise shouts for (N)the chief of the nations;
proclaim, give praise, and say,
(O)‘O Lord, save your people,
the remnant of Israel.’
8 Behold, I will bring them (P)from the north country
and (Q)gather them from (R)the farthest parts of the earth,
among them (S)the blind and the lame,
the pregnant woman and she who is in labor, together;
a great company, they shall return here.
9 (T)With weeping they shall come,
(U)and with pleas for mercy I will lead them back,
I will make them (V)walk by brooks of water,
(W)in a straight path in which they shall not stumble,
for (X)I am a father to Israel,
and Ephraim is (Y)my firstborn.
10 “Hear the word of the Lord, O nations,
and declare it in the coastlands far away;
say, ‘He who scattered Israel will (Z)gather him,
and will keep him (AA)as a shepherd keeps his flock.’
11 (AB)For the Lord has ransomed Jacob
and has redeemed him from (AC)hands too strong for him.
12 They shall come and sing aloud on the height of Zion,
(AD)and they shall be radiant (AE)over the goodness of the Lord,
(AF)over the grain, the wine, and the oil,
and over the young of the flock and the herd;
(AG)their life shall be like a watered garden,
(AH)and they shall languish no more.
13 (AI)Then shall the young women rejoice in the dance,
and the young men and the old shall be merry.
(AJ)I will turn their mourning into joy;
I will comfort them, and give them gladness for sorrow.
14 (AK)I will feast the soul of the priests with abundance,
and my people shall be satisfied with my goodness,
declares the Lord.”
15 Thus says the Lord:
(AL)“A voice is heard in (AM)Ramah,
lamentation and bitter weeping.
(AN)Rachel is weeping for her children;
she refuses to be comforted for her children,
(AO)because they are no more.”
16 Thus says the Lord:
“Keep your voice from weeping,
and your eyes from tears,
for there is a reward for your work,
declares the Lord,
and (AP)they shall come back from the land of the enemy.
17 (AQ)There is hope for your future,
declares the Lord,
and your children shall come back to their own country.
18 I have heard (AR)Ephraim grieving,
‘You have disciplined me, and I was disciplined,
like an untrained calf;
(AS)bring me back that I may be restored,
for you are the Lord my God.
19 For after (AT)I had turned away, I relented,
and after I was instructed, (AU)I struck my thigh;
(AV)I was ashamed, and I was confounded,
because I bore the disgrace of my youth.’
20 (AW)Is Ephraim my dear son?
(AX)Is he my darling child?
For as often as I speak against him,
I do remember him still.
(AY)Therefore my heart[b] yearns for him;
I will surely have mercy on him,
declares the Lord.
21 (AZ)“Set up road markers for yourself;
make yourself guideposts;
(BA)consider well the highway,
(BB)the road by which you went.
Return, O virgin Israel,
return to these your cities.
22 (BC)How long will you waver,
(BD)O faithless daughter?
For the Lord has created a new thing on the earth:
a woman encircles a man.”
23 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: “Once more they shall use these words in the land of Judah and in its cities, (BE)when I restore their fortunes:
24 (BI)And Judah and all its cities shall dwell there together, and (BJ)the farmers and those who wander with their flocks. 25 For I will (BK)satisfy the weary soul, and every languishing soul I will replenish.”
26 At this I awoke and looked, and my sleep was pleasant to me.
27 (BL)“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when (BM)I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with (BN)the seed of man and the seed of beast. 28 And it shall come to pass that (BO)as I have watched over them (BP)to pluck up and break down, to overthrow, destroy, and bring harm, (BQ)so I will watch over them (BR)to build and to plant, declares the Lord. 29 In those days they shall no longer say:
(BS)“‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes,
and the children's teeth are set on edge.’
30 (BT)But everyone shall die for his own iniquity. Each man who eats sour grapes, his teeth shall be set on edge.
The New Covenant
31 (BU)“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make (BV)a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, 32 not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when (BW)I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, (BX)though I was their husband, declares the Lord. 33 (BY)For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: (BZ)I will put my law within them, and I will write it (CA)on their hearts. (CB)And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ (CC)for they shall all know me, (CD)from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For (CE)I will forgive their iniquity, and (CF)I will remember their sin no more.”
35 Thus says the Lord,
who (CG)gives the sun for light by day
and (CH)the fixed order of the moon and the stars for light by night,
who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar—
(CI)the Lord of hosts is his name:
36 (CJ)“If this fixed order departs
from before me, declares the Lord,
then shall the offspring of Israel cease
from being a nation before me forever.”
37 Thus says the Lord:
“If the heavens above can be measured,
and the foundations of the earth below can be explored,
(CK)then I will cast off all the offspring of Israel
for all that they have done,
declares the Lord.”
38 (CL)“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when the city shall be rebuilt for the Lord (CM)from the Tower of Hananel to (CN)the Corner Gate. 39 (CO)And the measuring line shall go out farther, straight to the hill Gareb, and shall then turn to Goah. 40 (CP)The whole valley of the dead bodies and the ashes, and all the fields as far as the (CQ)brook Kidron, to the corner of (CR)the Horse Gate toward the east, (CS)shall be sacred to the Lord. (CT)It shall not be plucked up or overthrown anymore forever.”

“Sing(P) with joy for Jacob;
shout for the foremost(Q) of the nations.
Make your praises heard, and say,
‘Lord, save(R) your people,
the remnant(S) of Israel.’
8 See, I will bring them from the land of the north(T)
and gather(U) them from the ends of the earth.
Among them will be the blind(V) and the lame,(W)
expectant mothers and women in labor;
a great throng will return.
9 They will come with weeping;(X)
they will pray as I bring them back.
I will lead(Y) them beside streams of water(Z)
on a level(AA) path where they will not stumble,
because I am Israel’s father,(AB)
and Ephraim is my firstborn son.
10 “Hear the word of the Lord, you nations;
proclaim it in distant coastlands:(AC)
‘He who scattered(AD) Israel will gather(AE) them
and will watch over his flock like a shepherd.’(AF)
11 For the Lord will deliver Jacob
and redeem(AG) them from the hand of those stronger(AH) than they.
12 They will come and shout for joy(AI) on the heights(AJ) of Zion;
they will rejoice in the bounty(AK) of the Lord—
the grain, the new wine and the olive oil,(AL)
the young of the flocks(AM) and herds.
They will be like a well-watered garden,(AN)
and they will sorrow(AO) no more.
13 Then young women will dance and be glad,
young men and old as well.
I will turn their mourning(AP) into gladness;
I will give them comfort(AQ) and joy(AR) instead of sorrow.
14 I will satisfy(AS) the priests(AT) with abundance,
and my people will be filled with my bounty,(AU)”
declares the Lord.
15 This is what the Lord says:
“A voice is heard in Ramah,(AV)
mourning and great weeping,
Rachel weeping for her children
and refusing to be comforted,(AW)
because they are no more.”(AX)
16 This is what the Lord says:
“Restrain your voice from weeping
and your eyes from tears,(AY)
for your work will be rewarded,(AZ)”
declares the Lord.
“They will return(BA) from the land of the enemy.
17 So there is hope(BB) for your descendants,”
declares the Lord.
“Your children(BC) will return to their own land.
18 “I have surely heard Ephraim’s moaning:
‘You disciplined(BD) me like an unruly calf,(BE)
and I have been disciplined.
Restore(BF) me, and I will return,
because you are the Lord my God.
19 After I strayed,(BG)
I repented;
after I came to understand,
I beat(BH) my breast.
I was ashamed(BI) and humiliated
because I bore the disgrace of my youth.’(BJ)
20 Is not Ephraim my dear son,
the child(BK) in whom I delight?
Though I often speak against him,
I still remember(BL) him.
Therefore my heart yearns for him;
I have great compassion(BM) for him,”
declares the Lord.
21 “Set up road signs;
put up guideposts.(BN)
Take note of the highway,(BO)
the road that you take.
Return,(BP) Virgin(BQ) Israel,
return to your towns.
22 How long will you wander,(BR)
unfaithful(BS) Daughter Israel?
The Lord will create a new thing(BT) on earth—
the woman will return to[b](BU) the man.”
23 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “When I bring them back from captivity,[c](BV) the people in the land of Judah and in its towns will once again use these words: ‘The Lord bless(BW) you, you prosperous city,(BX) you sacred mountain.’(BY) 24 People will live(BZ) together in Judah and all its towns—farmers and those who move about with their flocks.(CA) 25 I will refresh the weary(CB) and satisfy the faint.”(CC)
26 At this I awoke(CD) and looked around. My sleep had been pleasant to me.
27 “The days are coming,”(CE) declares the Lord, “when I will plant(CF) the kingdoms of Israel and Judah with the offspring of people and of animals. 28 Just as I watched(CG) over them to uproot(CH) and tear down, and to overthrow, destroy and bring disaster,(CI) so I will watch over them to build and to plant,”(CJ) declares the Lord. 29 “In those days people will no longer say,
30 Instead, everyone will die for their own sin;(CM) whoever eats sour grapes—their own teeth will be set on edge.
31 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord,
“when I will make a new covenant(CN)
with the people of Israel
and with the people of Judah.
32 It will not be like the covenant(CO)
I made with their ancestors(CP)
when I took them by the hand
to lead them out of Egypt,(CQ)
because they broke my covenant,
though I was a husband(CR) to[d] them,[e]”
declares the Lord.
33 “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel
after that time,” declares the Lord.
“I will put my law in their minds(CS)
and write it on their hearts.(CT)
I will be their God,
and they will be my people.(CU)
34 No longer will they teach(CV) their neighbor,
or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’
because they will all know(CW) me,
from the least of them to the greatest,”
declares the Lord.
“For I will forgive(CX) their wickedness
and will remember their sins(CY) no more.”
35 This is what the Lord says,
he who appoints(CZ) the sun
to shine by day,
who decrees the moon and stars
to shine by night,(DA)
who stirs up the sea(DB)
so that its waves roar(DC)—
the Lord Almighty is his name:(DD)
36 “Only if these decrees(DE) vanish from my sight,”
declares the Lord,
“will Israel(DF) ever cease
being a nation before me.”
37 This is what the Lord says:
“Only if the heavens above can be measured(DG)
and the foundations of the earth below be searched out
will I reject(DH) all the descendants of Israel
because of all they have done,”
declares the Lord.
38 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when this city will be rebuilt(DI) for me from the Tower of Hananel(DJ) to the Corner Gate.(DK) 39 The measuring line(DL) will stretch from there straight to the hill of Gareb and then turn to Goah. 40 The whole valley(DM) where dead bodies(DN) and ashes are thrown, and all the terraces out to the Kidron Valley(DO) on the east as far as the corner of the Horse Gate,(DP) will be holy(DQ) to the Lord. The city will never again be uprooted or demolished.”

31 At the same time, saith the Lord, will I be the God of all the families of Israel, and they shall be my people.
2 Thus saith the Lord, The people which were left of the sword found grace in the wilderness; even Israel, when I went to cause him to rest.
3 The Lord hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.
4 Again I will build thee, and thou shalt be built, O virgin of Israel: thou shalt again be adorned with thy tabrets, and shalt go forth in the dances of them that make merry.
5 Thou shalt yet plant vines upon the mountains of Samaria: the planters shall plant, and shall eat them as common things.
6 For there shall be a day, that the watchmen upon the mount Ephraim shall cry, Arise ye, and let us go up to Zion unto the Lord our God.
7 For thus saith the Lord; Sing with gladness for Jacob, and shout among the chief of the nations: publish ye, praise ye, and say, O Lord, save thy people, the remnant of Israel.
8 Behold, I will bring them from the north country, and gather them from the coasts of the earth, and with them the blind and the lame, the woman with child and her that travaileth with child together: a great company shall return thither.
9 They shall come with weeping, and with supplications will I lead them: I will cause them to walk by the rivers of waters in a straight way, wherein they shall not stumble: for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn.
10 Hear the word of the Lord, O ye nations, and declare it in the isles afar off, and say, He that scattered Israel will gather him, and keep him, as a shepherd doth his flock.
11 For the Lord hath redeemed Jacob, and ransomed him from the hand of him that was stronger than he.
12 Therefore they shall come and sing in the height of Zion, and shall flow together to the goodness of the Lord, for wheat, and for wine, and for oil, and for the young of the flock and of the herd: and their soul shall be as a watered garden; and they shall not sorrow any more at all.
13 Then shall the virgin rejoice in the dance, both young men and old together: for I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them rejoice from their sorrow.
14 And I will satiate the soul of the priests with fatness, and my people shall be satisfied with my goodness, saith the Lord.
15 Thus saith the Lord; A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping; Rahel weeping for her children refused to be comforted for her children, because they were not.
16 Thus saith the Lord; Refrain thy voice from weeping, and thine eyes from tears: for thy work shall be rewarded, saith the Lord; and they shall come again from the land of the enemy.
17 And there is hope in thine end, saith the Lord, that thy children shall come again to their own border.
18 I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself thus; Thou hast chastised me, and I was chastised, as a bullock unaccustomed to the yoke: turn thou me, and I shall be turned; for thou art the Lord my God.
19 Surely after that I was turned, I repented; and after that I was instructed, I smote upon my thigh: I was ashamed, yea, even confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth.
20 Is Ephraim my dear son? is he a pleasant child? for since I spake against him, I do earnestly remember him still: therefore my bowels are troubled for him; I will surely have mercy upon him, saith the Lord.
21 Set thee up waymarks, make thee high heaps: set thine heart toward the highway, even the way which thou wentest: turn again, O virgin of Israel, turn again to these thy cities.
22 How long wilt thou go about, O thou backsliding daughter? for the Lord hath created a new thing in the earth, A woman shall compass a man.
23 Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; As yet they shall use this speech in the land of Judah and in the cities thereof, when I shall bring again their captivity; The Lord bless thee, O habitation of justice, and mountain of holiness.
24 And there shall dwell in Judah itself, and in all the cities thereof together, husbandmen, and they that go forth with flocks.
25 For I have satiated the weary soul, and I have replenished every sorrowful soul.
26 Upon this I awaked, and beheld; and my sleep was sweet unto me.
27 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of man, and with the seed of beast.
28 And it shall come to pass, that like as I have watched over them, to pluck up, and to break down, and to throw down, and to destroy, and to afflict; so will I watch over them, to build, and to plant, saith the Lord.
29 In those days they shall say no more, The fathers have eaten a sour grape, and the children's teeth are set on edge.
30 But every one shall die for his own iniquity: every man that eateth the sour grape, his teeth shall be set on edge.
31 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the Lord:
33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the Lord: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.
35 Thus saith the Lord, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof roar; The Lord of hosts is his name:
36 If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the Lord, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever.
37 Thus saith the Lord; If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, I will also cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done, saith the Lord.
38 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that the city shall be built to the Lord from the tower of Hananeel unto the gate of the corner.
39 And the measuring line shall yet go forth over against it upon the hill Gareb, and shall compass about to Goath.
40 And the whole valley of the dead bodies, and of the ashes, and all the fields unto the brook of Kidron, unto the corner of the horse gate toward the east, shall be holy unto the Lord; it shall not be plucked up, nor thrown down any more for ever.
