Isaac marries Rebekah

24 As the days went by and Abraham became older, the Lord blessed Abraham in every way. Abraham said to the oldest servant of his household, who was in charge of everything he owned, “Put your hand under my thigh. By the Lord, God of heaven and earth, give me your word that you won’t choose a wife for my son from the Canaanite women among whom I live. Go to my land and my family and find a wife for my son Isaac there.”

The servant said to him, “What if the woman doesn’t agree to come back with me to this land? Shouldn’t I take your son back to the land you left?”

Abraham said to him, “Be sure you don’t take my son back there. The Lord, God of heaven—who took me from my father’s household and from my family’s land, who spoke with me and who gave me his word, saying, ‘I will give this land to your descendants’—he will send his messenger in front of you, and you will find a wife for my son there. If the woman won’t agree to come back with you, you will be free from this obligation to me. Only don’t take my son back there.” So the servant put his hand under his master Abraham’s thigh and gave him his word about this mission.

10 The servant took ten of his master’s camels and all of his master’s best provisions, set out, and traveled to Nahor’s city in Aram-naharaim. 11 He had the camels kneel down outside the city at the well in the evening, when women come out to draw water. 12 He said, “Lord, God of my master Abraham, make something good happen for me today and be loyal to my master Abraham. 13 I will stand here by the spring while the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water. 14 When I say to a young woman, ‘Hand me your water jar so I can drink,’ and she says to me, ‘Drink, and I will give your camels water too,’ may she be the one you’ve selected for your servant Isaac. In this way I will know that you’ve been loyal to my master.” 15 Even before he finished speaking, Rebekah—daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother—was coming out with a water jar on her shoulder. 16 The young woman was very beautiful, old enough to be married, and hadn’t known a man intimately. She went down to the spring, filled her water jar, and came back up.

17 The servant ran to meet her and said, “Give me a little sip of water from your jar.”

18 She said, “Drink, sir.” Then she quickly lowered the water jar with her hands and gave him some water to drink. 19 When she finished giving him a drink, she said, “I’ll draw some water for your camels too, till they’ve had enough to drink.” 20 She emptied her water jar quickly into the watering trough, ran to the well again to draw water, and drew water for all of the camels. 21 The man stood gazing at her, wondering silently if the Lord had made his trip successful or not.

22 As soon as the camels had finished drinking, the man took out a gold ring, weighing a half shekel,[a] and two gold bracelets for her arms, weighing ten shekels. 23 He said, “Please tell me whose daughter you are. Is there room in your father’s house for us to spend the night?”

24 She responded, “I’m the daughter of Bethuel, who is the son of Milcah and Nahor.” 25 She continued, “We have plenty of straw and feed for the camels, and a place to spend the night.”

26 The man bowed down and praised the Lord: 27 “Bless the Lord, God of my master Abraham, who hasn’t given up his loyalty and his faithfulness to my master. The Lord has shown me the way to the household of my master’s brother.”

28 The young woman ran and told her mother’s household everything that had happened. 29 Rebekah had a brother named Laban, and Laban ran to the man outside by the spring. 30 When he had seen the ring and the bracelets on his sister’s arms, and when he had heard his sister Rebekah say, “This is what the man said to me,” he went to the man, who was still standing by the spring with his camels. 31 Laban said, “Come in, favored one of the Lord! Why are you standing outside? I’ve prepared the house and a place for the camels.” 32 So the man entered the house. Then Laban unbridled the camels, provided straw and feed for them and water to wash his feet and the feet of the men with him, 33 and set out a meal for him.

But the man said, “I won’t eat until I’ve said something.”

Laban replied, “Say it.”

34 The man said, “I am Abraham’s servant. 35 The Lord has richly blessed my master, has made him a great man, and has given him flocks, cattle, silver, gold, men servants, women servants, camels, and donkeys. 36 My master’s wife Sarah gave birth to a son for my master in her old age, and he’s given him everything he owns. 37 My master made me give him my word: ‘Don’t choose a wife for my son from the Canaanite women, in whose land I’m living. 38 No, instead, go to my father’s household and to my relatives and choose a wife for my son.’ 39 I said to my master, ‘What if the woman won’t come back with me?’ 40 He said to me, ‘The Lord, whom I’ve traveled with everywhere, will send his messenger with you and make your trip successful; and you will choose a wife for my son from my relatives and from my father’s household. 41 If you go to my relatives, you will be free from your obligation to me. Even if they provide no one for you, you will be free from your obligation to me.’

42 “Today I arrived at the spring, and I said, ‘Lord, God of my master Abraham, if you wish to make the trip I’m taking successful, 43 when I’m standing by the spring and the young woman who comes out to draw water and to whom I say, “Please give me a little drink of water from your jar,” 44 and she responds to me, “Drink, and I will draw water for your camels too,” may she be the woman the Lord has selected for my master’s son.’ 45 Before I finished saying this to myself, Rebekah came out with her water jar on her shoulder and went down to the spring to draw water. And I said to her, ‘Please give me something to drink.’ 46 She immediately lowered her water jar and said, ‘Drink, and I will give your camels something to drink too.’ So I drank and she also gave water to the camels. 47 Then I asked her, ‘Whose daughter are you?’ And she said, ‘The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor’s son whom Milcah bore him.’ I put a ring in her nose and bracelets on her arms. 48 I bowed and worshipped the Lord and blessed the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who led me in the right direction to choose the granddaughter of my master’s brother for his son. 49 Now if you’re loyal and faithful to my master, tell me. If not, tell me so I will know where I stand either way.”

50 Laban and Bethuel both responded, “This is all the Lord’s doing. We have nothing to say about it. 51 Here is Rebekah, right in front of you. Take her and go. She will be the wife of your master’s son, just as the Lord said.” 52 When Abraham’s servant heard what they said, he bowed low before the Lord. 53 The servant brought out gold and silver jewelry and clothing and gave them to Rebekah. To her brother and to her mother he gave the finest gifts. 54 He and the men with him ate and drank and spent the night.

When they got up in the morning, the servant said, “See me off to my master.”

55 Her brother and mother said, “Let the young woman stay with us not more than ten days, and after that she may go.”

56 But he said to them, “Don’t delay me. The Lord has made my trip successful. See me off so that I can go to my master.”

57 They said, “Summon the young woman, and let’s ask her opinion.” 58 They called Rebekah and said to her, “Will you go with this man?”

She said, “I will go.”

59 So they sent off their sister Rebekah, her nurse, Abraham’s servant, and his men. 60 And they blessed Rebekah, saying to her,

“May you, our sister, become
    thousands of ten thousand;
may your children possess
        their enemies’ cities.”

61 Rebekah and her young women got up, mounted the camels, and followed the man. So the servant took Rebekah and left.

62 Now Isaac had come from the region of[b] Beer-lahai-roi and had settled in the arid southern plain. 63 One evening, Isaac went out to inspect the pasture,[c] and while staring he saw camels approaching. 64 Rebekah stared at Isaac. She got down from the camel 65 and said to the servant, “Who is this man walking through the pasture to meet us?”

The servant said, “He’s my master.” So she took her headscarf and covered herself. 66 The servant told Isaac everything that had happened. 67 Isaac brought Rebekah into his mother Sarah’s tent. He received Rebekah as his wife and loved her. So Isaac found comfort after his mother’s death.

Abraham and Keturah’s children

25 Abraham married another wife, named Keturah. The children she bore him were Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. Jokshan became the father of Sheba and Dedan. Dedan’s sons were Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim. Midian’s sons were Ephah, Epher, Enoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All of these were Keturah’s sons. Abraham gave everything he owned to Isaac. To the sons of Abraham’s secondary wives, Abraham gave gifts and, while he was still living, sent them away from his son Isaac to land in the east.

Abraham’s death

Abraham lived to the age of 175. Abraham took his last breath and died after a good long life, a content old man, and he was placed with his ancestors. His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave in Machpelah, which is in the field of Zohar’s son Ephron the Hittite, near Mamre. 10 Thus Abraham and his wife Sarah were both buried in the field Abraham had purchased from the Hittites. 11 After Abraham’s death, God blessed his son Isaac, and Isaac lived in Beer-lahai-roi.

Ishmael’s descendants

12 These are the descendants of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s servant, bore for Abraham. 13 These are the names of Ishmael’s sons, by their names and according to their birth order: Nebaioth, Ishmael’s oldest son; Kedar; Adbeel; Mibsam; 14 Mishma; Dumah; Massa; 15 Hadad; Tema; Jetur; Naphish; and Kedemah. 16 These are Ishmael’s sons. These are their names by their villages and their settlements: twelve tribal leaders according to their tribes. 17 Ishmael lived to the age of 137. He took his last breath and died, and was placed with his ancestors. 18 He established camps[d] from Havilah to Shur, which is near Egypt on the road to Assyria. He died[e] among all of his brothers.

Jacob and Esau are born

19 These are the descendants of Isaac, Abraham’s son. Abraham became the father of Isaac. 20 Isaac was 40 years old when he married Rebekah the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean and the sister of Laban the Aramean, from Paddan-aram. 21 Isaac prayed to the Lord for his wife, since she was unable to have children. The Lord was moved by his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant. 22 But the boys pushed against each other inside of her, and she said, “If this is what it’s like, why did it happen to me?”[f]

So she went to ask the Lord. 23 And the Lord said to her,

“Two nations are in your womb;
two different peoples will emerge from your body.
One people will be stronger than the other;
the older will serve the younger.”

24 When she reached the end of her pregnancy, she discovered that she had twins. 25 The first came out red all over, clothed with hair, and she named him Esau. 26 Immediately afterward, his brother came out gripping Esau’s heel, and she named him Jacob. Isaac was 60 years old when they were born.

Jacob acquires the oldest son’s rights

27 When the young men grew up, Esau became an outdoorsman who knew how to hunt, and Jacob became a quiet man who stayed at home. 28 Isaac loved Esau because he enjoyed eating game, but Rebekah loved Jacob. 29 Once when Jacob was boiling stew, Esau came in from the field hungry 30 and said to Jacob, “I’m starving! Let me devour some of this red stuff.” That’s why his name is Edom.[g]

31 Jacob said, “Sell me your birthright[h] today.”

32 Esau said, “Since I’m going to die anyway, what good is my birthright to me?”

33 Jacob said, “Give me your word today.” And he did. He sold his birthright to Jacob. 34 So Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew. He ate, drank, got up, and left, showing just how little he thought of his birthright.

Isaac and Rebekah visit Gerar

26 When a famine gripped the land, a different one from the first famine that occurred in Abraham’s time, Isaac set out toward Gerar and toward King Abimelech of the Philistines. The Lord appeared to him and said, “Don’t go down to Egypt but settle temporarily in the land that I will show you. Stay in this land as an immigrant, and I will be with you and bless you because I will give all of these lands to you and your descendants. I will keep my word, which I gave to your father Abraham. I will give you as many descendants as the stars in the sky, and I will give your descendants all of these lands. All of the nations of the earth will be blessed because of your descendants. I will do this because Abraham obeyed me and kept my orders, my commandments, my statutes, and my instructions.”

So Isaac lived in Gerar. When the men who lived there asked about his wife, he said, “She’s my sister,” because he was afraid to say, “my wife,” thinking, The men who live there will kill me for Rebekah because she’s very beautiful. After Isaac had lived there for some time, the Philistines’ King Abimelech looked out his window and saw Isaac laughing together with his wife Rebekah.

So Abimelech summoned Isaac and said, “She’s your wife, isn’t she? How could you say, ‘She’s my sister’?”

Isaac responded, “Because I thought that I might be killed because of her.”

10 Abimelech said, “What are you trying to do to us? Before long, one of the people would have slept with your wife; and you would have made us guilty.” 11 Abimelech gave orders to all of the people, “Anyone who touches this man or his wife will be put to death!”

Isaac’s treaty with the Philistines

12 Isaac planted grain in that land and reaped one hundred shearim[i] that year because the Lord had blessed him. 13 Isaac grew richer and richer until he was extremely wealthy. 14 He had livestock, both flocks and cattle, and many servants. As a result, the Philistines envied him. 15 The Philistines closed up and filled with dirt all of the wells that his father’s servants had dug during his father Abraham’s lifetime. 16 Abimelech said to Isaac, “Move away from us because you have become too powerful among us.”

17 So Isaac moved away from there, camped in the valley of Gerar, and lived there. 18 Isaac dug out again the wells that were dug during the lifetime of his father Abraham. The Philistines had closed them up after Abraham’s death. Isaac gave them the same names his father had given them. 19 Isaac’s servants dug wells in the valley and found a well there with fresh water. 20 Isaac’s shepherds argued with Gerar’s shepherds, each claiming, “This is our water.” So Isaac named the well Esek[j] because they quarreled with him. 21 They dug another well and argued about it too, so he named it Sitnah.[k] 22 He left there and dug another well, but they didn’t argue about it, so he named it Rehoboth[l] and said, “Now the Lord has made an open space for us and has made us fertile in the land.”

23 Then he went up from Gerar to Beer-sheba. 24 The Lord appeared to him that night and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham. Don’t be afraid because I am with you. I will bless you, and I will give you many children for my servant Abraham’s sake.” 25 So Isaac built an altar there and worshipped in the Lord’s name. Isaac pitched his tent there, and his servants dug a well.

26 But Abimelech set out toward him from Gerar, with Ahuzzath his ally and Phicol the commander of his forces. 27 Isaac said to him, “Why have you come after me? You resented me and sent me away from you.”

28 They said, “We now see that the Lord was with you. We propose that there be a formal agreement between us and that we draw up a treaty[m] with you: 29 you must not treat us badly since we haven’t harmed you and since we have treated you well at all times. Then we will send you away peacefully, for you are now blessed by the Lord.” 30 Isaac prepared a banquet for them, and they ate and drank. 31 They got up early in the morning, and they gave each other their word. Isaac sent them off, and they left peacefully.

32 That day Isaac’s servants informed him about the well that they had been digging and said to him, “We found water.” 33 He called it Shibah;[n] therefore, the city’s name has been Beer-sheba[o] until today.

Esau’s wives

34 When Esau was 40 years old, he married Judith daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath daughter of Elon the Hittite. 35 They made life very difficult for Isaac and Rebekah.

Jacob acquires his father’s blessing

27 When Isaac had grown old and his eyesight was failing, he summoned his older son Esau and said to him, “My son?”

And Esau said, “I’m here.”

He said, “I’m old and don’t know when I will die. So now, take your hunting gear, your bow and quiver of arrows, go out to the field, and hunt game for me. Make me the delicious food that I love and bring it to me so I can eat. Then I can bless you before I die.”

Rebekah was listening when Isaac spoke to his son Esau. When Esau went out to the field to hunt game to bring back, Rebekah said to her son Jacob, “I just heard your father saying to your brother Esau, ‘Bring me some game and make me some delicious food so I can eat, and I will bless you in the Lord’s presence before I die.’ Now, my son, listen to me, to what I’m telling you to do. Go to the flock and get me two healthy young goats so I can prepare them as the delicious food your father loves. 10 You can bring it to your father, he will eat, and then he will bless you before he dies.”

11 Jacob said to his mother Rebekah, “My brother Esau is a hairy man, but I have smooth skin. 12 What if my father touches me and thinks I’m making fun of him? I will be cursed instead of blessed.”

13 His mother said to him, “Your curse will be on me, my son. Just listen to me: go and get them for me.” 14 So he went and got them and brought them to his mother, and his mother made the delicious food that his father loved. 15 Rebekah took her older son Esau’s favorite clothes that were in the house with her, and she put them on her younger son Jacob. 16 On his arms and smooth neck she put the hide of young goats, 17 and the delicious food and the bread she had made she put into her son’s hands.

18 Jacob went to his father and said, “My father.”

And he said, “I’m here. Who are you, my son?”

19 Jacob said to his father, “I’m Esau your oldest son. I’ve made what you asked me to. Sit up and eat some of the game so you can bless me.”

20 Isaac said to his son, “How could you find this so quickly, my son?”

He said, “The Lord your God led me right to it.”[p]

21 Isaac said to Jacob, “Come here and let me touch you, my son. Are you my son Esau or not?” 22 So Jacob approached his father Isaac, and Isaac touched him and said, “The voice is Jacob’s voice, but the arms are Esau’s arms.” 23 Isaac didn’t recognize him because his arms were hairy like Esau’s arms, so he blessed him.

24 Isaac said, “Are you really my son Esau?”

And he said, “I am.”

25 Isaac said, “Bring some food here and let me eat some of my son’s game so I can bless you.” Jacob put it before him and he ate, and he brought him wine and he drank. 26 His father Isaac said to him, “Come here and kiss me, my son.” 27 So he came close and kissed him. When Isaac smelled the scent of his clothes, he blessed him,

“See, the scent of my son
is like the scent of the field
        that the Lord has blessed.
28 May God give you
        showers from the sky,
        olive oil from the earth,
plenty of grain and new wine.
29 May the nations serve you,
may peoples bow down to you.
Be the most powerful man among your brothers,
and may your mother’s sons bow down to you.
Those who curse you will be cursed,
and those who bless you will be blessed.”

Esau receives a secondary blessing

30 After Isaac had finished blessing Jacob, and just as Jacob left his father Isaac, his brother Esau came back from his hunt. 31 He too made some delicious food, brought it to his father, and said, “Let my father sit up and eat from his son’s game so that you may bless me.”

32 His father Isaac said to him, “Who are you?”

And he said, “I’m your son, your oldest son, Esau.”

33 Isaac was so shocked that he trembled violently. He said, “Who was the hunter just here with game? He brought me food, and I ate all of it before you came. I blessed him, and he will stay blessed!”

34 When Esau heard what his father said, he let out a loud agonizing cry and wept bitterly. He said to his father, “Bless me! Me too, my father!”

35 Isaac said, “Your brother has already come deceitfully and has taken your blessing.”

36 Esau said, “Isn’t this why he’s called Jacob? He’s taken me[q] twice now: he took my birthright, and now he’s taken my blessing.” He continued, “Haven’t you saved a blessing for me?”

37 Isaac replied to Esau, “I’ve already made him more powerful than you, and I’ve made all of his brothers his servants. I’ve made him strong with grain and wine. What can I do for you, my son?”

38 Esau said to his father, “Do you really have only one blessing, Father? Bless me too, my father!” And Esau wept loudly.

39 His father Isaac responded and said to him,

“Now, you will make a home
far away from the olive groves of the earth,
far away from the showers of the sky above.
40 You will live by your sword;
        you will serve your brother.
But when you grow restless,[r]
you will tear away his harness
        from your neck.”

Jacob sent away for protection

41 Esau was furious at Jacob because his father had blessed him, and Esau said to himself, When the period of mourning for the death of my father is over, I will kill my brother.

42 Rebekah was told what her older son Esau was planning, so she summoned her younger son Jacob and said to him, “Esau your brother is planning revenge. He plans to kill you. 43 So now, my son, listen to me: Get up and escape to my brother Laban in Haran. 44 Live with him for a short while until your brother’s rage subsides, 45 until your brother’s anger at you goes away and he forgets what you did to him. Then I will send for you and bring you back from there. Why should I suffer the loss of both of you on one day?”

46 Rebekah then said to Isaac, “I really loathe these Hittite women. If Jacob marries one of the Hittite women, like the women of this land, why should I go on living?”

28 So Isaac summoned Jacob, blessed him, and gave him these orders: “Don’t marry a Canaanite woman. Get up and go to Paddan-aram, to the household of Bethuel, your mother’s father, and once there, marry one of the daughters of Laban, your mother’s brother. God Almighty[s] will bless you, make you fertile, and give you many descendants so that you will become a large group of peoples. He will give you and your descendants Abraham’s blessing so that you will own the land in which you are now immigrants, the land God gave to Abraham.” So Isaac sent Jacob off, and he traveled to Paddan-aram, to Laban son of Bethuel the Aramean and brother of Rebekah, Jacob and Esau’s mother.

Esau understood that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him to Paddan-aram to marry a woman from there. He recognized that, when Isaac blessed Jacob, he had ordered him, “Don’t marry a Canaanite woman,” and that Jacob had listened to his father and mother and gone to Paddan-aram. Esau realized that his father Isaac considered Canaanite women unacceptable. So he went to Ishmael and married Mahalath daughter of Abraham’s son Ishmael and sister of Nebaioth, in addition to his other wives.

Jacob’s dream at Bethel

10 Jacob left Beer-sheba and set out for Haran. 11 He reached a certain place and spent the night there. When the sun had set, he took one of the stones at that place and put it near his head. Then he lay down there. 12 He dreamed and saw a raised staircase, its foundation on earth and its top touching the sky, and God’s messengers were ascending and descending on it. 13 Suddenly the Lord was standing on it[t] and saying, “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. 14 Your descendants will become like the dust of the earth; you will spread out to the west, east, north, and south. Every family of earth will be blessed because of you and your descendants. 15 I am with you now, I will protect you everywhere you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done everything that I have promised you.”

16 When Jacob woke from his sleep, he thought to himself, The Lord is definitely in this place, but I didn’t know it. 17 He was terrified and thought, This sacred place is awesome. It’s none other than God’s house and the entrance to heaven. 18 After Jacob got up early in the morning, he took the stone that he had put near his head, set it up as a sacred pillar, and poured oil on the top of it. 19 He named that sacred place Bethel,[u] though Luz was the city’s original name. 20 Jacob made a solemn promise: “If God is with me and protects me on this trip I’m taking, and gives me bread to eat and clothes to wear, 21 and I return safely to my father’s household, then the Lord will be my God. 22 This stone that I’ve set up as a sacred pillar will be God’s house, and of everything you give me I will give a tenth back to you.”

Jacob meets Rachel

29 Jacob got to his feet and set out for the land of the easterners. He saw a well in the field in front of him, near which three flocks of sheep were lying down. That well was their source for water because the flocks drank from that well. A huge stone covered the well’s opening. When all of the flocks were gathered there, the shepherds would roll the stone from the well’s opening, water the sheep, and return the stone to its place at the well’s opening. Jacob said to them, “Where are you from, my brothers?”

They said, “We’re from Haran.”

Then he said to them, “Do you know Laban, Nahor’s grandson?”

They said, “We know him.”

He said to them, “Is he well?”

They said, “He’s fine. In fact, this is his daughter Rachel now, coming with the flock.”

He said to them, “It’s now only the middle of the day. It’s not time yet to gather the animals. Water the flock, and then go, put them out to pasture.”

They said to him, “We can’t until all the herds are gathered, and then we[v] roll the stone away from the well’s opening and water the flock.”

While he was still talking to them, Rachel came with her father’s flock since she was its shepherd. 10 When Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his uncle, and the flock of Laban, Jacob came up, rolled the stone from the well’s opening, and watered the flock of his uncle Laban. 11 Jacob kissed Rachel and wept aloud. 12 Jacob told Rachel that he was related to her father and that he was Rebekah’s son. She then ran to tell her father. 13 When Laban heard about Jacob his sister’s son, he ran to meet him. Laban embraced him, kissed him, and invited him into his house, where Jacob recounted to Laban everything that had happened. 14 Laban said to him, “Yes, you are my flesh and blood.”

Jacob marries Leah and Rachel

After Jacob had stayed with Laban for a month, 15 Laban said to Jacob, “You shouldn’t have to work for free just because you are my relative. Tell me what you would like to be paid.”

16 Now Laban had two daughters: the older was named Leah and the younger Rachel. 17 Leah had delicate eyes,[w] but Rachel had a beautiful figure and was good-looking. 18 Jacob loved Rachel and said, “I will work for you for seven years for Rachel, your younger daughter.”

19 Laban said, “I’d rather give her to you than to another man. Stay with me.”

20 Jacob worked for Rachel for seven years, but it seemed like a few days because he loved her. 21 Jacob said to Laban, “The time has come. Give me my wife so that I may sleep with her.” 22 So Laban invited all the people of that place and prepared a banquet. 23 However, in the evening, he took his daughter Leah and brought her to Jacob, and he slept with her. 24 Laban had given his servant Zilpah to his daughter Leah as her servant. 25 In the morning, there she was—Leah! Jacob said to Laban, “What have you done to me? Didn’t I work for you to have Rachel? Why did you betray me?”

26 Laban said, “Where we live, we don’t give the younger woman before the oldest. 27 Complete the celebratory week with this woman. Then I will give[x] you this other woman too for your work, if you work for me seven more years.” 28 So that is what Jacob did. He completed the celebratory week with this woman, and then Laban gave him his daughter Rachel as his wife. 29 Laban had given his servant Bilhah to his daughter Rachel as her servant. 30 Jacob slept with Rachel, and he loved Rachel more than Leah. He worked for Laban seven more years.

Jacob’s sons are born

31 When the Lord saw that Leah was unloved, he opened her womb; but Rachel was unable to have children. 32 Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Reuben[y] because she said, “The Lord saw my harsh treatment, and now my husband will love me.” 33 She became pregnant again and gave birth to a son. She said, “The Lord heard that I was unloved, so he gave me this son too,” and she named him Simeon.[z] 34 She became pregnant again and gave birth to a son. She said, “Now, this time my husband will embrace me,[aa] since I have given birth to three sons for him.” So she named him Levi.[ab] 35 She became pregnant again and gave birth to a son. She said, “This time I will praise the Lord.” So she named him Judah.[ac] Then she stopped bearing children.

30 When Rachel realized that she could bear Jacob no children, Rachel became jealous of her sister and said to Jacob, “Give me children! If you don’t, I may as well be dead.”

Jacob was angry at Rachel and said, “Do you think I’m God? God alone has kept you from giving birth!”

She said, “Here’s my servant Bilhah. Sleep with her, and she will give birth for me. Because of her, I will also have children.” So Rachel gave her servant Bilhah to Jacob as his wife, and he slept with her. Bilhah became pregnant and gave birth to a son for Jacob. Rachel said, “God has judged in my favor, heard my voice, and given me a son.” So she named him Dan.[ad] Rachel’s servant Bilhah became pregnant again and gave birth to a second son for Jacob. Rachel said, “I’ve competed fiercely with my sister, and now I’ve won.” So she named him Naphtali.[ae]

When Leah realized that she had stopped bearing children, she took her servant Zilpah and gave her to Jacob as his wife. 10 Leah’s servant Zilpah gave birth to a son for Jacob, 11 and Leah said, “What good luck!” So she named him Gad.[af] 12 Leah’s servant Zilpah gave birth to a second son for Jacob, 13 and Leah said, “I’m happy now because women call me happy.” So she named him Asher.[ag]

14 During the wheat harvest, Reuben found some erotic herbs[ah] in the field and brought them to his mother Leah. Rachel said to Leah, “Give me your son’s erotic herbs.”

15 Leah replied, “Isn’t it enough that you’ve taken my husband? Now you want to take my son’s erotic herbs too?”

Rachel said, “For your son’s erotic herbs, Jacob[ai] may sleep with you tonight.”

16 When Jacob came back from the field in the evening, Leah went out to meet him and said, “You must sleep with me because I’ve paid for you with my son’s erotic herbs.” So he slept with her that night.

17 God responded to Leah. She became pregnant and gave birth to a fifth son for Jacob. 18 Leah said, “God gave me what I paid for, what I deserved for giving my servant to my husband.” So she named him Issachar.[aj] 19 Leah became pregnant again and gave birth to a sixth son for Jacob, 20 and she said, “God has given me a wonderful gift. Now my husband will honor me since I’ve borne him six sons.” So she named him Zebulun.[ak] 21 After this, she gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah.

22 Then God remembered Rachel, responded to her, and let her conceive. 23 She became pregnant and gave birth to a son and said, “God has taken away my shame.” 24 She named him Joseph,[al] saying to herself, May the Lord give me another son.

God blesses Jacob and Laban

25 After Rachel gave birth to Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, “Send me off so that I can go to my own place and my own country. 26 Give me my wives and children whom I’ve worked for, and I will go. You know the work I’ve done for you.”

27 Laban said to him, “Do me this favor. I’ve discovered by a divine sign that the Lord has blessed me because of you, 28 so name your price and I will pay it.”

29 Jacob said to him, “You know how I’ve worked for you, and how well your livestock have done with me. 30 While in my care, what little you had has multiplied a great deal. The Lord blessed you wherever I took your livestock.[am] Now, when will I be able to work for my own household too?”

31 Laban said, “What will I pay you?”

Jacob said, “Don’t pay me anything. If you will do this for me, I will take care of your flock again, and keep a portion.[an] 32 I will go through the entire flock today, taking out all of the speckled and spotted sheep, all of the black male lambs, and all of the spotted and speckled female goats. That will be my price. 33 I will be completely honest with you: when you come to check on our agreement, every female goat with me that isn’t speckled or spotted and every male lamb with me that isn’t black will be considered stolen.”

34 Laban said, “All right; let’s do it.” 35 However, on that very day Laban took out the striped and spotted male goats and all of the speckled and spotted female goats—any with some white in it—and all of the black male lambs, and gave them to his sons. 36 He put a three-day trip between himself and Jacob, while Jacob was watching the rest of Laban’s flock.

37 Then Jacob took new branches from poplar, almond, and plane trees; and he peeled white stripes on them, exposing the branches’ white color. 38 He set the branches that he had peeled near the watering troughs so that they were in front of the flock when they drank, because they often mated when they came to drink. 39 When the flock mated in front of the branches, they gave birth to striped, speckled, and spotted young. 40 Jacob sorted out the lambs, turning the flock to face the striped and black ones in Laban’s flock but keeping his flock separate, setting them apart from Laban’s flock. 41 Whenever the strongest of the flock mated, Jacob put the branches in front of them near the watering troughs so that they mated near the branches. 42 But he didn’t put branches up for the weakest of the flock. So the weakest became Laban’s and the strongest Jacob’s. 43 The man Jacob became very, very rich: he owned large flocks, female and male servants, camels, and donkeys.

Isaac and Rebekah

24 Abraham was now very old,(A) and the Lord had blessed(B) him in every way.(C) He said to the senior servant(D) in his household, the one in charge of all that he had,(E) “Put your hand under my thigh.(F) I want you to swear(G) by the Lord, the God of heaven(H) and the God of earth,(I) that you will not get a wife for my son(J) from the daughters of the Canaanites,(K) among whom I am living,(L) but will go to my country and my own relatives(M) and get a wife for my son Isaac.(N)

The servant asked him, “What if the woman is unwilling to come back with me to this land?(O) Shall I then take your son back to the country you came from?(P)

“Make sure that you do not take my son back there,”(Q) Abraham said. “The Lord, the God of heaven,(R) who brought me out of my father’s household and my native land(S) and who spoke to me and promised me on oath, saying, ‘To your offspring[a](T) I will give this land’(U)—he will send his angel before you(V) so that you can get a wife for my son from there. If the woman is unwilling to come back with you, then you will be released from this oath(W) of mine. Only do not take my son back there.”(X) So the servant put his hand under the thigh(Y) of his master(Z) Abraham and swore an oath to him concerning this matter.

10 Then the servant left, taking with him ten of his master’s camels(AA) loaded with all kinds of good things(AB) from his master. He set out for Aram Naharaim[b](AC) and made his way to the town of Nahor.(AD) 11 He had the camels kneel down near the well(AE) outside the town; it was toward evening, the time the women go out to draw water.(AF)

12 Then he prayed, “Lord, God of my master Abraham,(AG) make me successful(AH) today, and show kindness(AI) to my master Abraham. 13 See, I am standing beside this spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water.(AJ) 14 May it be that when I say to a young woman, ‘Please let down your jar that I may have a drink,’ and she says, ‘Drink,(AK) and I’ll water your camels too’(AL)—let her be the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac.(AM) By this I will know(AN) that you have shown kindness to my master.”

15 Before he had finished praying,(AO) Rebekah(AP) came out with her jar on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel(AQ) son of Milkah,(AR) who was the wife of Abraham’s brother Nahor.(AS) 16 The woman was very beautiful,(AT) a virgin;(AU) no man had ever slept with her. She went down to the spring, filled her jar and came up again.

17 The servant hurried to meet her and said, “Please give me a little water from your jar.”(AV)

18 “Drink,(AW) my lord,” she said, and quickly lowered the jar to her hands and gave him a drink.

19 After she had given him a drink, she said, “I’ll draw water for your camels(AX) too,(AY) until they have had enough to drink.” 20 So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough, ran back to the well to draw more water, and drew enough for all his camels.(AZ) 21 Without saying a word, the man watched her closely to learn whether or not the Lord had made his journey successful.(BA)

22 When the camels had finished drinking, the man took out a gold nose ring(BB) weighing a beka[c] and two gold bracelets(BC) weighing ten shekels.[d] 23 Then he asked, “Whose daughter are you?(BD) Please tell me, is there room in your father’s house for us to spend the night?(BE)

24 She answered him, “I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son that Milkah bore to Nahor.(BF) 25 And she added, “We have plenty of straw and fodder,(BG) as well as room for you to spend the night.”

26 Then the man bowed down and worshiped the Lord,(BH) 27 saying, “Praise be to the Lord,(BI) the God of my master Abraham,(BJ) who has not abandoned his kindness and faithfulness(BK) to my master. As for me, the Lord has led me on the journey(BL) to the house of my master’s relatives.”(BM)

28 The young woman ran and told her mother’s household about these things.(BN) 29 Now Rebekah had a brother named Laban,(BO) and he hurried out to the man at the spring. 30 As soon as he had seen the nose ring, and the bracelets on his sister’s arms,(BP) and had heard Rebekah tell what the man said to her, he went out to the man and found him standing by the camels near the spring. 31 “Come, you who are blessed by the Lord,”(BQ) he said. “Why are you standing out here? I have prepared the house and a place for the camels.”

32 So the man went to the house, and the camels were unloaded. Straw and fodder(BR) were brought for the camels, and water for him and his men to wash their feet.(BS) 33 Then food was set before him, but he said, “I will not eat until I have told you what I have to say.”

“Then tell us,” Laban said.

34 So he said, “I am Abraham’s servant.(BT) 35 The Lord has blessed(BU) my master abundantly,(BV) and he has become wealthy.(BW) He has given him sheep and cattle, silver and gold, male and female servants, and camels and donkeys.(BX) 36 My master’s wife Sarah has borne him a son in her old age,(BY) and he has given him everything he owns.(BZ) 37 And my master made me swear an oath,(CA) and said, ‘You must not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I live,(CB) 38 but go to my father’s family and to my own clan, and get a wife for my son.’(CC)

39 “Then I asked my master, ‘What if the woman will not come back with me?’(CD)

40 “He replied, ‘The Lord, before whom I have walked faithfully,(CE) will send his angel with you(CF) and make your journey a success,(CG) so that you can get a wife for my son from my own clan and from my father’s family.(CH) 41 You will be released from my oath if, when you go to my clan, they refuse to give her to you—then you will be released from my oath.’(CI)

42 “When I came to the spring today, I said, ‘Lord, God of my master Abraham, if you will, please grant success(CJ) to the journey on which I have come. 43 See, I am standing beside this spring.(CK) If a young woman(CL) comes out to draw water and I say to her, “Please let me drink a little water from your jar,”(CM) 44 and if she says to me, “Drink, and I’ll draw water for your camels too,” let her be the one the Lord has chosen for my master’s son.’(CN)

45 “Before I finished praying in my heart,(CO) Rebekah came out, with her jar on her shoulder.(CP) She went down to the spring and drew water, and I said to her, ‘Please give me a drink.’(CQ)

46 “She quickly lowered her jar from her shoulder and said, ‘Drink, and I’ll water your camels too.’(CR) So I drank, and she watered the camels also.(CS)

47 “I asked her, ‘Whose daughter are you?’(CT)

“She said, ‘The daughter of Bethuel(CU) son of Nahor, whom Milkah bore to him.’(CV)

“Then I put the ring in her nose(CW) and the bracelets on her arms,(CX) 48 and I bowed down and worshiped the Lord.(CY) I praised the Lord, the God of my master Abraham,(CZ) who had led me on the right road to get the granddaughter of my master’s brother for his son.(DA) 49 Now if you will show kindness and faithfulness(DB) to my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, so I may know which way to turn.”

50 Laban and Bethuel(DC) answered, “This is from the Lord;(DD) we can say nothing to you one way or the other.(DE) 51 Here is Rebekah; take her and go, and let her become the wife of your master’s son, as the Lord has directed.(DF)

52 When Abraham’s servant heard what they said, he bowed down to the ground before the Lord.(DG) 53 Then the servant brought out gold and silver jewelry and articles of clothing(DH) and gave them to Rebekah; he also gave costly gifts(DI) to her brother and to her mother. 54 Then he and the men who were with him ate and drank and spent the night there.

When they got up the next morning, he said, “Send me on my way(DJ) to my master.”

55 But her brother and her mother replied, “Let the young woman remain with us ten days or so;(DK) then you[e] may go.”

56 But he said to them, “Do not detain me, now that the Lord has granted success(DL) to my journey. Send me on my way(DM) so I may go to my master.”

57 Then they said, “Let’s call the young woman and ask her about it.”(DN) 58 So they called Rebekah and asked her, “Will you go with this man?”

“I will go,”(DO) she said.

59 So they sent their sister Rebekah on her way,(DP) along with her nurse(DQ) and Abraham’s servant and his men. 60 And they blessed(DR) Rebekah and said to her,

“Our sister, may you increase
    to thousands upon thousands;(DS)
may your offspring possess
    the cities of their enemies.”(DT)

61 Then Rebekah and her attendants(DU) got ready and mounted the camels and went back with the man. So the servant took Rebekah and left.

62 Now Isaac had come from Beer Lahai Roi,(DV) for he was living in the Negev.(DW) 63 He went out to the field one evening to meditate,[f](DX) and as he looked up,(DY) he saw camels approaching. 64 Rebekah also looked up and saw Isaac. She got down from her camel(DZ) 65 and asked the servant, “Who is that man in the field coming to meet us?”

“He is my master,” the servant answered. So she took her veil(EA) and covered herself.

66 Then the servant told Isaac all he had done. 67 Isaac brought her into the tent(EB) of his mother Sarah,(EC) and he married Rebekah.(ED) So she became his wife, and he loved her;(EE) and Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.(EF)

The Death of Abraham(EG)

25 Abraham had taken another wife, whose name was Keturah. She bore him Zimran,(EH) Jokshan, Medan, Midian,(EI) Ishbak and Shuah.(EJ) Jokshan was the father of Sheba(EK) and Dedan;(EL) the descendants of Dedan were the Ashurites, the Letushites and the Leummites. The sons of Midian were Ephah,(EM) Epher, Hanok, Abida and Eldaah. All these were descendants of Keturah.

Abraham left everything he owned to Isaac.(EN) But while he was still living, he gave gifts to the sons of his concubines(EO) and sent them away from his son Isaac(EP) to the land of the east.(EQ)

Abraham lived a hundred and seventy-five years.(ER) Then Abraham breathed his last and died at a good old age,(ES) an old man and full of years; and he was gathered to his people.(ET) His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him(EU) in the cave of Machpelah(EV) near Mamre,(EW) in the field of Ephron(EX) son of Zohar the Hittite,(EY) 10 the field Abraham had bought from the Hittites.[g](EZ) There Abraham was buried with his wife Sarah. 11 After Abraham’s death, God blessed his son Isaac,(FA) who then lived near Beer Lahai Roi.(FB)

Ishmael’s Sons(FC)

12 This is the account(FD) of the family line of Abraham’s son Ishmael, whom Sarah’s slave, Hagar(FE) the Egyptian, bore to Abraham.(FF)

13 These are the names of the sons of Ishmael, listed in the order of their birth: Nebaioth(FG) the firstborn of Ishmael, Kedar,(FH) Adbeel, Mibsam, 14 Mishma, Dumah,(FI) Massa, 15 Hadad, Tema,(FJ) Jetur,(FK) Naphish and Kedemah. 16 These were the sons of Ishmael, and these are the names of the twelve tribal rulers(FL) according to their settlements and camps.(FM) 17 Ishmael lived a hundred and thirty-seven years. He breathed his last and died, and he was gathered to his people.(FN) 18 His descendants(FO) settled in the area from Havilah to Shur,(FP) near the eastern border of Egypt, as you go toward Ashur. And they lived in hostility toward[h] all the tribes related to them.(FQ)

Jacob and Esau

19 This is the account(FR) of the family line of Abraham’s son Isaac.

Abraham became the father of Isaac, 20 and Isaac was forty years old(FS) when he married Rebekah(FT) daughter of Bethuel(FU) the Aramean from Paddan Aram[i](FV) and sister of Laban(FW) the Aramean.(FX)

21 Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of his wife, because she was childless.(FY) The Lord answered his prayer,(FZ) and his wife Rebekah became pregnant. 22 The babies jostled each other within her, and she said, “Why is this happening to me?” So she went to inquire of the Lord.(GA)

23 The Lord said to her,

“Two nations(GB) are in your womb,
    and two peoples from within you will be separated;
one people will be stronger than the other,
and the older will serve the younger.(GC)

24 When the time came for her to give birth,(GD) there were twin boys in her womb.(GE) 25 The first to come out was red,(GF) and his whole body was like a hairy garment;(GG) so they named him Esau.[j](GH) 26 After this, his brother came out,(GI) with his hand grasping Esau’s heel;(GJ) so he was named Jacob.[k](GK) Isaac was sixty years old(GL) when Rebekah gave birth to them.

27 The boys grew up, and Esau became a skillful hunter,(GM) a man of the open country,(GN) while Jacob was content to stay at home among the tents. 28 Isaac, who had a taste for wild game,(GO) loved Esau, but Rebekah loved Jacob.(GP)

29 Once when Jacob was cooking some stew,(GQ) Esau came in from the open country,(GR) famished. 30 He said to Jacob, “Quick, let me have some of that red stew!(GS) I’m famished!” (That is why he was also called Edom.[l])(GT)

31 Jacob replied, “First sell me your birthright.(GU)

32 “Look, I am about to die,” Esau said. “What good is the birthright to me?”

33 But Jacob said, “Swear(GV) to me first.” So he swore an oath to him, selling his birthright(GW) to Jacob.

34 Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew.(GX) He ate and drank, and then got up and left.

So Esau despised his birthright.

Isaac and Abimelek(GY)

26 Now there was a famine in the land(GZ)—besides the previous famine in Abraham’s time—and Isaac went to Abimelek king of the Philistines(HA) in Gerar.(HB) The Lord appeared(HC) to Isaac and said, “Do not go down to Egypt;(HD) live in the land where I tell you to live.(HE) Stay in this land for a while,(HF) and I will be with you(HG) and will bless you.(HH) For to you and your descendants I will give all these lands(HI) and will confirm the oath I swore to your father Abraham.(HJ) I will make your descendants(HK) as numerous as the stars in the sky(HL) and will give them all these lands,(HM) and through your offspring[m] all nations on earth will be blessed,[n](HN) because Abraham obeyed me(HO) and did everything I required of him, keeping my commands, my decrees(HP) and my instructions.(HQ) So Isaac stayed in Gerar.(HR)

When the men of that place asked him about his wife, he said, “She is my sister,(HS)” because he was afraid to say, “She is my wife.” He thought, “The men of this place might kill me on account of Rebekah, because she is beautiful.”

When Isaac had been there a long time, Abimelek king of the Philistines(HT) looked down from a window and saw Isaac caressing his wife Rebekah. So Abimelek summoned Isaac and said, “She is really your wife! Why did you say, ‘She is my sister’?(HU)

Isaac answered him, “Because I thought I might lose my life on account of her.”

10 Then Abimelek said, “What is this you have done to us?(HV) One of the men might well have slept with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us.”

11 So Abimelek gave orders to all the people: “Anyone who harms(HW) this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.”(HX)

12 Isaac planted crops in that land and the same year reaped a hundredfold,(HY) because the Lord blessed him.(HZ) 13 The man became rich, and his wealth continued to grow until he became very wealthy.(IA) 14 He had so many flocks and herds and servants(IB) that the Philistines envied him.(IC) 15 So all the wells(ID) that his father’s servants had dug in the time of his father Abraham, the Philistines stopped up,(IE) filling them with earth.

16 Then Abimelek said to Isaac, “Move away from us;(IF) you have become too powerful for us.(IG)

17 So Isaac moved away from there and encamped in the Valley of Gerar,(IH) where he settled. 18 Isaac reopened the wells(II) that had been dug in the time of his father Abraham, which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died, and he gave them the same names his father had given them.

19 Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and discovered a well of fresh water there. 20 But the herders of Gerar quarreled(IJ) with those of Isaac and said, “The water is ours!”(IK) So he named the well Esek,[o] because they disputed with him. 21 Then they dug another well, but they quarreled(IL) over that one also; so he named it Sitnah.[p] 22 He moved on from there and dug another well, and no one quarreled over it. He named it Rehoboth,[q](IM) saying, “Now the Lord has given us room(IN) and we will flourish(IO) in the land.”

23 From there he went up to Beersheba.(IP) 24 That night the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham.(IQ) Do not be afraid,(IR) for I am with you;(IS) I will bless you and will increase the number of your descendants(IT) for the sake of my servant Abraham.”(IU)

25 Isaac built an altar(IV) there and called on the name of the Lord.(IW) There he pitched his tent, and there his servants dug a well.(IX)

26 Meanwhile, Abimelek had come to him from Gerar, with Ahuzzath his personal adviser and Phicol the commander of his forces.(IY) 27 Isaac asked them, “Why have you come to me, since you were hostile to me and sent me away?(IZ)

28 They answered, “We saw clearly that the Lord was with you;(JA) so we said, ‘There ought to be a sworn agreement between us’—between us and you. Let us make a treaty(JB) with you 29 that you will do us no harm,(JC) just as we did not harm you but always treated you well and sent you away peacefully. And now you are blessed by the Lord.”(JD)

30 Isaac then made a feast(JE) for them, and they ate and drank. 31 Early the next morning the men swore an oath(JF) to each other. Then Isaac sent them on their way, and they went away peacefully.

32 That day Isaac’s servants came and told him about the well(JG) they had dug. They said, “We’ve found water!” 33 He called it Shibah,[r] and to this day the name of the town has been Beersheba.[s](JH)

Jacob Takes Esau’s Blessing

34 When Esau was forty years old,(JI) he married Judith daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and also Basemath daughter of Elon the Hittite.(JJ) 35 They were a source of grief to Isaac and Rebekah.(JK)

27 When Isaac was old and his eyes were so weak that he could no longer see,(JL) he called for Esau his older son(JM) and said to him, “My son.”

“Here I am,” he answered.

Isaac said, “I am now an old man and don’t know the day of my death.(JN) Now then, get your equipment—your quiver and bow—and go out to the open country(JO) to hunt some wild game for me. Prepare me the kind of tasty food I like(JP) and bring it to me to eat, so that I may give you my blessing(JQ) before I die.”(JR)

Now Rebekah was listening as Isaac spoke to his son Esau. When Esau left for the open country(JS) to hunt game and bring it back, Rebekah said to her son Jacob,(JT) “Look, I overheard your father say to your brother Esau, ‘Bring me some game and prepare me some tasty food to eat, so that I may give you my blessing in the presence of the Lord before I die.’(JU) Now, my son, listen carefully and do what I tell you:(JV) Go out to the flock and bring me two choice young goats,(JW) so I can prepare some tasty food for your father, just the way he likes it.(JX) 10 Then take it to your father to eat, so that he may give you his blessing(JY) before he dies.”

11 Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, “But my brother Esau is a hairy man(JZ) while I have smooth skin. 12 What if my father touches me?(KA) I would appear to be tricking him and would bring down a curse(KB) on myself rather than a blessing.”

13 His mother said to him, “My son, let the curse fall on me.(KC) Just do what I say;(KD) go and get them for me.”

14 So he went and got them and brought them to his mother, and she prepared some tasty food, just the way his father liked it.(KE) 15 Then Rebekah took the best clothes(KF) of Esau her older son,(KG) which she had in the house, and put them on her younger son Jacob. 16 She also covered his hands and the smooth part of his neck with the goatskins.(KH) 17 Then she handed to her son Jacob the tasty food and the bread she had made.

18 He went to his father and said, “My father.”

“Yes, my son,” he answered. “Who is it?”(KI)

19 Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn.(KJ) I have done as you told me. Please sit up and eat some of my game,(KK) so that you may give me your blessing.”(KL)

20 Isaac asked his son, “How did you find it so quickly, my son?”

“The Lord your God gave me success,(KM)” he replied.

21 Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Come near so I can touch you,(KN) my son, to know whether you really are my son Esau or not.”

22 Jacob went close to his father Isaac,(KO) who touched(KP) him and said, “The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau.” 23 He did not recognize him, for his hands were hairy like those of his brother Esau;(KQ) so he proceeded to bless him. 24 “Are you really my son Esau?” he asked.

“I am,” he replied.

25 Then he said, “My son, bring me some of your game to eat, so that I may give you my blessing.”(KR)

Jacob brought it to him and he ate; and he brought some wine and he drank. 26 Then his father Isaac said to him, “Come here, my son, and kiss me.”

27 So he went to him and kissed(KS) him(KT). When Isaac caught the smell of his clothes,(KU) he blessed him and said,

“Ah, the smell of my son
is like the smell of a field
    that the Lord has blessed.(KV)
28 May God give you heaven’s dew(KW)
    and earth’s richness(KX)
an abundance of grain(KY) and new wine.(KZ)
29 May nations serve you
and peoples bow down to you.(LA)
Be lord over your brothers,
and may the sons of your mother bow down to you.(LB)
May those who curse you be cursed
and those who bless you be blessed.(LC)

30 After Isaac finished blessing him, and Jacob had scarcely left his father’s presence, his brother Esau came in from hunting. 31 He too prepared some tasty food and brought it to his father. Then he said to him, “My father, please sit up and eat some of my game, so that you may give me your blessing.”(LD)

32 His father Isaac asked him, “Who are you?”(LE)

“I am your son,” he answered, “your firstborn, Esau.(LF)

33 Isaac trembled violently and said, “Who was it, then, that hunted game and brought it to me?(LG) I ate it just before you came and I blessed him—and indeed he will be blessed!(LH)

34 When Esau heard his father’s words, he burst out with a loud and bitter cry(LI) and said to his father, “Bless(LJ) me—me too, my father!”

35 But he said, “Your brother came deceitfully(LK) and took your blessing.”(LL)

36 Esau said, “Isn’t he rightly named Jacob[t]?(LM) This is the second time he has taken advantage of(LN) me: He took my birthright,(LO) and now he’s taken my blessing!”(LP) Then he asked, “Haven’t you reserved any blessing for me?”

37 Isaac answered Esau, “I have made him lord over you and have made all his relatives his servants, and I have sustained him with grain and new wine.(LQ) So what can I possibly do for you, my son?”

38 Esau said to his father, “Do you have only one blessing, my father? Bless me too, my father!” Then Esau wept aloud.(LR)

39 His father Isaac answered him,(LS)

“Your dwelling will be
    away from the earth’s richness,
away from the dew(LT) of heaven above.(LU)
40 You will live by the sword
and you will serve(LV) your brother.(LW)
But when you grow restless,
    you will throw his yoke
    from off your neck.(LX)

41 Esau held a grudge(LY) against Jacob(LZ) because of the blessing his father had given him. He said to himself, “The days of mourning(MA) for my father are near; then I will kill(MB) my brother Jacob.”(MC)

42 When Rebekah was told what her older son Esau(MD) had said, she sent for her younger son Jacob and said to him, “Your brother Esau is planning to avenge himself by killing you.(ME) 43 Now then, my son, do what I say:(MF) Flee at once to my brother Laban(MG) in Harran.(MH) 44 Stay with him for a while(MI) until your brother’s fury subsides. 45 When your brother is no longer angry with you and forgets what you did to him,(MJ) I’ll send word for you to come back from there.(MK) Why should I lose both of you in one day?”

46 Then Rebekah said to Isaac, “I’m disgusted with living because of these Hittite(ML) women. If Jacob takes a wife from among the women of this land,(MM) from Hittite women like these, my life will not be worth living.”(MN)

28 So Isaac called for Jacob and blessed(MO) him. Then he commanded him: “Do not marry a Canaanite woman.(MP) Go at once to Paddan Aram,[u](MQ) to the house of your mother’s father Bethuel.(MR) Take a wife for yourself there, from among the daughters of Laban, your mother’s brother.(MS) May God Almighty[v](MT) bless(MU) you and make you fruitful(MV) and increase your numbers(MW) until you become a community of peoples. May he give you and your descendants the blessing given to Abraham,(MX) so that you may take possession of the land(MY) where you now reside as a foreigner,(MZ) the land God gave to Abraham.” Then Isaac sent Jacob on his way,(NA) and he went to Paddan Aram,(NB) to Laban son of Bethuel the Aramean,(NC) the brother of Rebekah,(ND) who was the mother of Jacob and Esau.

Now Esau learned that Isaac had blessed Jacob and had sent him to Paddan Aram to take a wife from there, and that when he blessed him he commanded him, “Do not marry a Canaanite woman,”(NE) and that Jacob had obeyed his father and mother and had gone to Paddan Aram. Esau then realized how displeasing the Canaanite women(NF) were to his father Isaac;(NG) so he went to Ishmael(NH) and married Mahalath, the sister of Nebaioth(NI) and daughter of Ishmael son of Abraham, in addition to the wives he already had.(NJ)

Jacob’s Dream at Bethel

10 Jacob left Beersheba(NK) and set out for Harran.(NL) 11 When he reached a certain place,(NM) he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head(NN) and lay down to sleep. 12 He had a dream(NO) in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.(NP) 13 There above it[w] stood the Lord,(NQ) and he said: “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac.(NR) I will give you and your descendants the land(NS) on which you are lying.(NT) 14 Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you(NU) will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south.(NV) All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring.[x](NW) 15 I am with you(NX) and will watch over you(NY) wherever you go,(NZ) and I will bring you back to this land.(OA) I will not leave you(OB) until I have done what I have promised you.(OC)(OD)

16 When Jacob awoke from his sleep,(OE) he thought, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” 17 He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place!(OF) This is none other than the house of God;(OG) this is the gate of heaven.”

18 Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had placed under his head(OH) and set it up as a pillar(OI) and poured oil on top of it.(OJ) 19 He called that place Bethel,[y](OK) though the city used to be called Luz.(OL)

20 Then Jacob made a vow,(OM) saying, “If God will be with me and will watch over me(ON) on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear(OO) 21 so that I return safely(OP) to my father’s household,(OQ) then the Lord[z] will be my God(OR) 22 and[aa] this stone that I have set up as a pillar(OS) will be God’s house,(OT) and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth.(OU)

Jacob Arrives in Paddan Aram

29 Then Jacob continued on his journey and came to the land of the eastern peoples.(OV) There he saw a well in the open country, with three flocks of sheep lying near it because the flocks were watered from that well.(OW) The stone(OX) over the mouth of the well was large. When all the flocks were gathered there, the shepherds would roll the stone(OY) away from the well’s mouth and water the sheep.(OZ) Then they would return the stone to its place over the mouth of the well.

Jacob asked the shepherds, “My brothers, where are you from?”(PA)

“We’re from Harran,(PB)” they replied.

He said to them, “Do you know Laban, Nahor’s grandson?”(PC)

“Yes, we know him,” they answered.

Then Jacob asked them, “Is he well?”

“Yes, he is,” they said, “and here comes his daughter Rachel(PD) with the sheep.(PE)

“Look,” he said, “the sun is still high; it is not time for the flocks to be gathered. Water the sheep and take them back to pasture.”

“We can’t,” they replied, “until all the flocks are gathered and the stone(PF) has been rolled away from the mouth of the well. Then we will water(PG) the sheep.”

While he was still talking with them, Rachel came with her father’s sheep,(PH) for she was a shepherd. 10 When Jacob saw Rachel(PI) daughter of his uncle Laban, and Laban’s sheep, he went over and rolled the stone(PJ) away from the mouth of the well and watered(PK) his uncle’s sheep.(PL) 11 Then Jacob kissed(PM) Rachel and began to weep aloud.(PN) 12 He had told Rachel that he was a relative(PO) of her father and a son of Rebekah.(PP) So she ran and told her father.(PQ)

13 As soon as Laban(PR) heard the news about Jacob, his sister’s son, he hurried to meet him. He embraced him(PS) and kissed him and brought him to his home, and there Jacob told him all these things. 14 Then Laban said to him, “You are my own flesh and blood.”(PT)

Jacob Marries Leah and Rachel

After Jacob had stayed with him for a whole month, 15 Laban said to him, “Just because you are a relative(PU) of mine, should you work for me for nothing? Tell me what your wages(PV) should be.”

16 Now Laban had two daughters; the name of the older was Leah,(PW) and the name of the younger was Rachel.(PX) 17 Leah had weak[ab] eyes, but Rachel(PY) had a lovely figure and was beautiful.(PZ) 18 Jacob was in love with Rachel(QA) and said, “I’ll work for you seven years in return for your younger daughter Rachel.”(QB)

19 Laban said, “It’s better that I give her to you than to some other man. Stay here with me.” 20 So Jacob served seven years to get Rachel,(QC) but they seemed like only a few days to him because of his love for her.(QD)

21 Then Jacob said to Laban, “Give me my wife. My time is completed, and I want to make love to her.(QE)

22 So Laban brought together all the people of the place and gave a feast.(QF) 23 But when evening came, he took his daughter Leah(QG) and brought her to Jacob, and Jacob made love to her. 24 And Laban gave his servant Zilpah(QH) to his daughter as her attendant.(QI)

25 When morning came, there was Leah! So Jacob said to Laban, “What is this you have done to me?(QJ) I served you for Rachel, didn’t I? Why have you deceived me?(QK)

26 Laban replied, “It is not our custom here to give the younger daughter in marriage before the older one.(QL) 27 Finish this daughter’s bridal week;(QM) then we will give you the younger one also, in return for another seven years of work.(QN)

28 And Jacob did so. He finished the week with Leah, and then Laban gave him his daughter Rachel to be his wife.(QO) 29 Laban gave his servant Bilhah(QP) to his daughter Rachel as her attendant.(QQ) 30 Jacob made love to Rachel also, and his love for Rachel was greater than his love for Leah.(QR) And he worked for Laban another seven years.(QS)

Jacob’s Children

31 When the Lord saw that Leah was not loved,(QT) he enabled her to conceive,(QU) but Rachel remained childless. 32 Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son.(QV) She named him Reuben,[ac](QW) for she said, “It is because the Lord has seen my misery.(QX) Surely my husband will love me now.”

33 She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said, “Because the Lord heard that I am not loved,(QY) he gave me this one too.” So she named him Simeon.[ad](QZ)

34 Again she conceived, and when she gave birth to a son she said, “Now at last my husband will become attached to me,(RA) because I have borne him three sons.” So he was named Levi.[ae](RB)

35 She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said, “This time I will praise the Lord.” So she named him Judah.[af](RC) Then she stopped having children.(RD)

30 When Rachel saw that she was not bearing Jacob any children,(RE) she became jealous of her sister.(RF) So she said to Jacob, “Give me children, or I’ll die!”

Jacob became angry with her and said, “Am I in the place of God,(RG) who has kept you from having children?”(RH)

Then she said, “Here is Bilhah,(RI) my servant.(RJ) Sleep with her so that she can bear children for me and I too can build a family through her.”(RK)

So she gave him her servant Bilhah as a wife.(RL) Jacob slept with her,(RM) and she became pregnant and bore him a son. Then Rachel said, “God has vindicated me;(RN) he has listened to my plea and given me a son.”(RO) Because of this she named him Dan.[ag](RP)

Rachel’s servant Bilhah(RQ) conceived again and bore Jacob a second son. Then Rachel said, “I have had a great struggle with my sister, and I have won.”(RR) So she named him Naphtali.[ah](RS)

When Leah(RT) saw that she had stopped having children,(RU) she took her servant Zilpah(RV) and gave her to Jacob as a wife.(RW) 10 Leah’s servant Zilpah(RX) bore Jacob a son. 11 Then Leah said, “What good fortune!”[ai] So she named him Gad.[aj](RY)
