El relato de la creación

1 En el principio, Dios creó los cielos y la tierra.[a] 2 La tierra no tenía forma y estaba vacía, y la oscuridad cubría las aguas profundas; y el Espíritu de Dios se movía en el aire sobre la superficie de las aguas.

3 Entonces Dios dijo: «Que haya luz»; y hubo luz. 4 Y Dios vio que la luz era buena. Luego separó la luz de la oscuridad. 5 Dios llamó a la luz «día» y a la oscuridad «noche».

Y pasó la tarde y llegó la mañana, así se cumplió el primer día.

6 Entonces Dios dijo: «Que haya un espacio entre las aguas, para separar las aguas de los cielos de las aguas de la tierra»; 7 y eso fue lo que sucedió. Dios formó ese espacio para separar las aguas de la tierra de las aguas de los cielos 8 y Dios llamó al espacio «cielo».

Y pasó la tarde y llegó la mañana, así se cumplió el segundo día.

9 Entonces Dios dijo: «Que las aguas debajo del cielo se junten en un solo lugar, para que aparezca la tierra seca»; y eso fue lo que sucedió. 10 Dios llamó a lo seco «tierra» y a las aguas «mares». Y Dios vio que esto era bueno. 11 Después Dios dijo: «Que de la tierra brote vegetación: toda clase de plantas con semillas y árboles que den frutos con semillas. Estas semillas producirán, a su vez, las mismas clases de plantas y árboles de los que provinieron»; y eso fue lo que sucedió. 12 La tierra produjo vegetación: toda clase de plantas con semillas y árboles que dan frutos con semillas. Las semillas produjeron plantas y árboles de la misma clase. Y Dios vio que esto era bueno.

13 Y pasó la tarde y llegó la mañana, así se cumplió el tercer día.

14 Entonces Dios dijo: «Que aparezcan luces en el cielo para separar el día de la noche; que sean señales para que marquen las estaciones, los días y los años. 15 Que esas luces en el cielo brillen sobre la tierra»; y eso fue lo que sucedió. 16 Dios hizo dos grandes luces: la más grande para que gobernara el día, y la más pequeña para que gobernara la noche. También hizo las estrellas. 17 Dios puso esas luces en el cielo para iluminar la tierra, 18 para que gobernaran el día y la noche, y para separar la luz de la oscuridad. Y Dios vio que esto era bueno.

19 Y pasó la tarde y llegó la mañana, así se cumplió el cuarto día.

20 Entonces Dios dijo: «Que las aguas se colmen de peces y de otras formas de vida. Que los cielos se llenen de aves de toda clase». 21 Así que Dios creó grandes criaturas marinas y todos los seres vivientes que se mueven y se agitan en el agua y aves de todo tipo, cada uno produciendo crías de la misma especie. Y Dios vio que esto era bueno. 22 Entonces Dios los bendijo con las siguientes palabras: «Sean fructíferos y multiplíquense. Que los peces llenen los mares y las aves se multipliquen sobre la tierra».

23 Y pasó la tarde y llegó la mañana, así se cumplió el quinto día.

24 Entonces Dios dijo: «Que la tierra produzca toda clase de animales, que cada uno produzca crías de la misma especie: animales domésticos, animales pequeños que corran por el suelo y animales salvajes»; y eso fue lo que sucedió. 25 Dios hizo toda clase de animales salvajes, animales domésticos y animales pequeños; cada uno con la capacidad de producir crías de la misma especie. Y Dios vio que esto era bueno.

26 Entonces Dios dijo: «Hagamos a los seres humanos[b] a nuestra imagen, para que sean como nosotros. Ellos reinarán sobre los peces del mar, las aves del cielo, los animales domésticos, todos los animales salvajes de la tierra[c] y los animales pequeños que corren por el suelo».

27 Así que Dios creó a los seres humanos[d] a su propia imagen.
    A imagen de Dios los creó;
    hombre y mujer los creó.

28 Luego Dios los bendijo con las siguientes palabras: «Sean fructíferos y multiplíquense. Llenen la tierra y gobiernen sobre ella. Reinen sobre los peces del mar, las aves del cielo y todos los animales que corren por el suelo».

29 Entonces Dios dijo: «¡Miren! Les he dado todas las plantas con semilla que hay sobre la tierra y todos los árboles frutales para que les sirvan de alimento. 30 Y he dado toda planta verde como alimento para todos los animales salvajes, para las aves del cielo y para los animales pequeños que corren por el suelo, es decir, para todo lo que tiene vida»; y eso fue lo que sucedió.

31 Entonces Dios miró todo lo que había hecho, ¡y vio que era muy bueno!

Y pasó la tarde y llegó la mañana, así se cumplió el sexto día.

2 Así quedó terminada la creación de los cielos y de la tierra, y de todo lo que hay en ellos. 2 Cuando llegó el séptimo día, Dios ya había terminado su obra de creación, y descansó[e] de toda su labor. 3 Dios bendijo el séptimo día y lo declaró santo, porque ese fue el día en que descansó de toda su obra de creación.

4 Este es el relato de la creación de los cielos y la tierra.

El hombre y la mujer en el Edén

Cuando el Señor Dios hizo la tierra y los cielos, 5 no crecían en ella plantas salvajes ni grano porque el Señor Dios aún no había enviado lluvia para regar la tierra, ni había personas que la cultivaran. 6 En cambio, del suelo brotaban manantiales que regaban[f] toda la tierra. 7 Luego el Señor Dios formó al hombre del polvo de la tierra. Sopló aliento de vida en la nariz del hombre, y el hombre se convirtió en un ser viviente.

8 Después, el Señor Dios plantó un huerto en Edén, en el oriente, y allí puso al hombre que había formado. 9 El Señor Dios hizo que crecieran del suelo toda clase de árboles: árboles hermosos y que daban frutos deliciosos. En medio del huerto puso el árbol de la vida y el árbol del conocimiento del bien y del mal.

10 Un río salía de la tierra del Edén que regaba el huerto y después se dividía en cuatro ramales. 11 El primero, llamado Pisón, rodeaba toda la tierra de Havila, donde hay oro. 12 El oro de esa tierra es excepcionalmente puro; también se encuentran allí resinas aromáticas y piedras de ónice. 13 El segundo, llamado Gihón, rodeaba toda la tierra de Cus. 14 El tercero, llamado Tigris, corría al oriente de la tierra de Asiria. El cuarto se llama Éufrates.

15 El Señor Dios puso al hombre en el jardín de Edén para que se ocupara de él y lo custodiara; 16 pero el Señor Dios le advirtió: «Puedes comer libremente del fruto de cualquier árbol del huerto, 17 excepto del árbol del conocimiento del bien y del mal. Si comes de su fruto, sin duda morirás».

18 Después, el Señor Dios dijo: «No es bueno que el hombre esté solo. Haré una ayuda ideal para él». 19 Entonces el Señor Dios formó de la tierra todos los animales salvajes y todas las aves del cielo. Los puso frente al hombre[g] para ver cómo los llamaría, y el hombre escogió un nombre para cada uno de ellos. 20 Puso nombre a todos los animales domésticos, a todas las aves del cielo y a todos los animales salvajes; pero aún no había una ayuda ideal para él.

21 Entonces el Señor Dios hizo que el hombre cayera en un profundo sueño. Mientras el hombre dormía, el Señor Dios le sacó una de sus costillas[h] y cerró la abertura. 22 Entonces el Señor Dios hizo de la costilla a una mujer, y la presentó al hombre.

23 «¡Al fin!—exclamó el hombre—.

¡Esta es hueso de mis huesos
    y carne de mi carne!
Ella será llamada “mujer”[i]
    porque fue tomada del hombre».

24 Esto explica por qué el hombre deja a su padre y a su madre, y se une a su esposa, y los dos se convierten en uno solo.

25 Ahora bien, el hombre y su esposa estaban desnudos, pero no sentían vergüenza.

The Beginning

1 In the beginning(A) God created(B) the heavens(C) and the earth.(D) 2 Now the earth was formless(E) and empty,(F) darkness was over the surface of the deep,(G) and the Spirit of God(H) was hovering(I) over the waters.

3 And God said,(J) “Let there be light,” and there was light.(K) 4 God saw that the light was good,(L) and he separated the light from the darkness.(M) 5 God called(N) the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.”(O) And there was evening, and there was morning(P)—the first day.

6 And God said,(Q) “Let there be a vault(R) between the waters(S) to separate water from water.” 7 So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it.(T) And it was so.(U) 8 God called(V) the vault “sky.”(W) And there was evening, and there was morning(X)—the second day.

9 And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place,(Y) and let dry ground(Z) appear.” And it was so.(AA) 10 God called(AB) the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters(AC) he called “seas.”(AD) And God saw that it was good.(AE)

11 Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation:(AF) seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.(AG)” And it was so.(AH) 12 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds(AI) and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.(AJ) 13 And there was evening, and there was morning(AK)—the third day.

14 And God said, “Let there be lights(AL) in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night,(AM) and let them serve as signs(AN) to mark sacred times,(AO) and days and years,(AP) 15 and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so.(AQ) 16 God made two great lights—the greater light(AR) to govern(AS) the day and the lesser light to govern(AT) the night.(AU) He also made the stars.(AV) 17 God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, 18 to govern the day and the night,(AW) and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good.(AX) 19 And there was evening, and there was morning(AY)—the fourth day.

20 And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures,(AZ) and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky.”(BA) 21 So God created(BB) the great creatures of the sea(BC) and every living thing with which the water teems and that moves about in it,(BD) according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind.(BE) And God saw that it was good.(BF) 22 God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.”(BG) 23 And there was evening, and there was morning(BH)—the fifth day.

24 And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures(BI) according to their kinds:(BJ) the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so.(BK) 25 God made the wild animals(BL) according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds.(BM) And God saw that it was good.(BN)

26 Then God said, “Let us(BO) make mankind(BP) in our image,(BQ) in our likeness,(BR) so that they may rule(BS) over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky,(BT) over the livestock and all the wild animals,[a] and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

27 So God created(BU) mankind(BV) in his own image,(BW)
    in the image of God(BX) he created them;
    male and female(BY) he created them.(BZ)

28 God blessed them and said to them,(CA) “Be fruitful and increase in number;(CB) fill the earth(CC) and subdue it. Rule over(CD) the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.(CE)”

29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.(CF) 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life(CG) in it—I give every green plant for food.(CH)” And it was so.

31 God saw all that he had made,(CI) and it was very good.(CJ) And there was evening, and there was morning(CK)—the sixth day.

2 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.(CL)

2 By the seventh day(CM) God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.(CN) 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy,(CO) because on it he rested(CP) from all the work of creating(CQ) that he had done.

Adam and Eve

4 This is the account(CR) of the heavens and the earth when they were created,(CS) when the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.

5 Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth[b] and no plant had yet sprung up,(CT) for the Lord God had not sent rain on the earth(CU) and there was no one to work the ground, 6 but streams[c] came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground. 7 Then the Lord God formed(CV) a man[d](CW) from the dust(CX) of the ground(CY) and breathed into his nostrils the breath(CZ) of life,(DA) and the man became a living being.(DB)

8 Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden;(DC) and there he put the man he had formed. 9 The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees(DD) that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life(DE) and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.(DF)

10 A river(DG) watering the garden flowed from Eden;(DH) from there it was separated into four headwaters. 11 The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah,(DI) where there is gold. 12 (The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin[e](DJ) and onyx are also there.) 13 The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush.[f] 14 The name of the third river is the Tigris;(DK) it runs along the east side of Ashur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.(DL)

15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden(DM) to work it and take care of it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden;(DN) 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil,(DO) for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”(DP)

18 The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”(DQ)

19 Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals(DR) and all the birds in the sky.(DS) He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called(DT) each living creature,(DU) that was its name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals.

But for Adam[g] no suitable helper(DV) was found. 21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep;(DW) and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs[h] and then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib[i](DX) he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

23 The man said,

“This is now bone of my bones
    and flesh of my flesh;(DY)
she shall be called(DZ) ‘woman,’
    for she was taken out of man.(EA)”

24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united(EB) to his wife, and they become one flesh.(EC)

25 Adam and his wife were both naked,(ED) and they felt no shame.
