La discendenza di Chetura
25 Abramo prese un'altra moglie: essa aveva nome Chetura. 2 Essa gli partorì Zimran, Ioksan, Medan, Madian, Isbak e Suach. 3 Ioksan generò Saba e Dedan e i figli di Dedan furono gli Asurim, i Letusim e i Leummim. 4 I figli di Madian furono Efa, Efer, Enoch, Abida ed Eldaa. Tutti questi sono i figli di Chetura.
5 Abramo diede tutti i suoi beni a Isacco. 6 Quanto invece ai figli delle concubine, che Abramo aveva avute, diede loro doni e, mentre era ancora in vita, li licenziò, mandandoli lontano da Isacco suo figlio, verso il levante, nella regione orientale.
Morte di Abramo
7 La durata della vita di Abramo fu di centosettantacinque anni. 8 Poi Abramo spirò e morì in felice canizie, vecchio e sazio di giorni, e si riunì ai suoi antenati. 9 Lo seppellirono i suoi figli, Isacco e Ismaele, nella caverna di Macpela, nel campo di Efron, figlio di Zocar, l'Hittita, di fronte a Mamre. 10 E' appunto il campo che Abramo aveva comperato dagli Hittiti: ivi furono sepolti Abramo e sua moglie Sara. 11 Dopo la morte di Abramo, Dio benedisse il figlio di lui Isacco e Isacco abitò presso il pozzo di Lacai-Roi.
La discendenza di Ismaele
12 Questa è la discendenza di Ismaele, figlio di Abramo, che gli aveva partorito Agar l'Egiziana, schiava di Sara.
13 Questi sono i nomi dei figli d'Ismaele, con il loro elenco in ordine di generazione: il primogenito di Ismaele è Nebaiòt, poi Kedar, Adbeèl, Mibsam, 14 Misma, Duma, Massa, 15 Adad, Tema, Ietur, Nafis e Kedma. 16 Questi sono gli Ismaeliti e questi sono i loro nomi secondo i loro recinti e accampamenti. Sono i dodici principi delle rispettive tribù. 17 La durata della vita di Ismaele fu di centotrentasette anni; poi morì e si riunì ai suoi antenati. 18 Egli abitò da Avìla fino a Sur, che è lungo il confine dell'Egitto in direzione di Assur; egli si era stabilito di fronte a tutti i suoi fratelli.
III. STORIA DI ISACCO E DI GIACOBBE
Nascita di Esaù e di Giacobbe
19 Questa è la discendenza di Isacco, figlio di Abramo. Abramo aveva generato Isacco. 20 Isacco aveva quarant'anni quando si prese in moglie Rebecca, figlia di Betuèl l'Arameo, da Paddan-Aram, e sorella di Làbano l'Arameo. 21 Isacco supplicò il Signore per sua moglie, perché essa era sterile e il Signore lo esaudì, così che sua moglie Rebecca divenne incinta. 22 Ora i figli si urtavano nel suo seno ed essa esclamò: «Se è così, perché questo?». Andò a consultare il Signore. 23 Il Signore le rispose:
«Due nazioni sono nel tuo seno
e due popoli dal tuo grembo si disperderanno;
un popolo sarà più forte dell'altro
e il maggiore servirà il più piccolo».
24 Quando poi si compì per lei il tempo di partorire, ecco due gemelli erano nel suo grembo. 25 Uscì il primo, rossiccio e tutto come un mantello di pelo, e fu chiamato Esaù. 26 Subito dopo, uscì il fratello e teneva in mano il calcagno di Esaù; fu chiamato Giacobbe. Isacco aveva sessant'anni quando essi nacquero.
27 I fanciulli crebbero ed Esaù divenne abile nella caccia, un uomo della steppa, mentre Giacobbe era un uomo tranquillo, che dimorava sotto le tende. 28 Isacco prediligeva Esaù, perché la cacciagione era di suo gusto, mentre Rebecca prediligeva Giacobbe.
Esaù cede il diritto di primogenitura
29 Una volta Giacobbe aveva cotto una minestra di lenticchie; Esaù arrivò dalla campagna ed era sfinito. 30 Disse a Giacobbe: «Lasciami mangiare un pò di questa minestra rossa, perché io sono sfinito» - Per questo fu chiamato Edom -. 31 Giacobbe disse: «Vendimi subito la tua primogenitura». 32 Rispose Esaù: «Ecco sto morendo: a che mi serve allora la primogenitura?». 33 Giacobbe allora disse: «Giuramelo subito». Quegli lo giurò e vendette la primogenitura a Giacobbe. 34 Giacobbe diede ad Esaù il pane e la minestra di lenticchie; questi mangiò e bevve, poi si alzò e se ne andò. A tal punto Esaù aveva disprezzato la primogenitura.

25 Then again Avraham took an isha, and her shem was Keturah.
2 And she bore him Zimran, and Yokshan, and Medan, and Midyan, and Yishbak, and Shuach.
3 And Yokshan fathered Sheva, and Dedan. And the bnei Dedan were Asshurim, and Letushim, and Leummim.
4 And the bnei Midyan; Ephah, and Epher, and Chanoch, and Avida, and Eldaah. All these were the bnei Keturah.
5 And Avraham gave all that he had unto Yitzchak.
6 But unto the bnei hapilageshim (sons of the concubines), which Avraham had, Avraham gave mattanot, and sent them away from Yitzchak bno, while he yet lived, eastward, unto eretz kedem.
7 And these are the days of the years of Avraham’s life which he lived, a hundred threescore and fifteen shanim.
8 Then Avraham breathed his last, and died in a good old age, a zaken, full of years; and was gathered to his people.
9 And his banim Yitzchak and Yishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the sadeh of Ephron ben Tzochar the Chitti, which is near Mamre;
10 The sadeh which Avraham purchased of the bnei Chet, there was Avraham buried, and Sarah his wife.
11 And it came to pass after the mot Avraham, that Elohim blessed Yitzchak bno; and Yitzchak dwelt near Be’er Lachai Roi.
12 Now these are the toldot Yishmael ben Avraham, whom Hagar the Egyptian, shifchat Sarah, bore unto Avraham:
13 And these are the shemot bnei Yishmael, by their shemot, according to their toldot: the bechor of Yishmael, Nevayot; and Kedar, and Adbe’el, and Mivsam,
14 And Mishma, and Dumah, and Massa,
15 Chadad, and Tema, Yetur, Naphish, and Kedmah:
16 These are the bnei Yishmael, and these are their shemot, by their settlement, and by their camps; twelve nasiim (princes, rulers) according to their tribes.
17 And these are the years of the life of Yishmael, an hundred and thirty and seven shanah; and he breathed his last and died; and was gathered unto his people.
18 And they dwelt from Chavilah unto Shur, that is near Mitzrayim, as thou goest toward Assyria; they took their place east of their brethren.

19 And these are the toldot of Yitzchak ben Avraham: Avraham fathered Yitzchak;
20 And Yitzchak was arba’im shanah when he took Rivkah as his wife, the bat Betuel the Aramean of Padan Aram, the achot Lavan the Aramean.
21 And Yitzchak davened to Hashem on behalf of his isha, because she was barren; and Hashem was entreated of him, and Rivkah his isha conceived.
22 And the banim struggled jostling within her; and she said, If it be well, why am I thus? And she went to inquire of Hashem.
23 And Hashem said unto her, Two goyim (nations) are in thy womb, and two peoples shall be separated from within thee; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the older shall serve the younger.
24 And when her days were fulfilled to be delivered, hinei, there were twins in her womb.
25 And the first came out admoni (red) all over like a hairy garment; and they called shmo Esav.
26 And after that came out his brother, and his yad was grasping on akev Esav; and shmo was called Ya’akov; and Yitzchak was threescore shanah when she bore them.
27 And the nearim grew: and Esav was a skilled hunter, an ish sadeh; and Ya’akov was an ish tam (quiet man), dwelling in ohalim.
28 And Yitzchak loved Esav, because he did eat of his wild game; but Rivkah loved Ya’akov.
29 And Ya’akov cooked stew: and Esav came from the sadeh, and he was famished.
30 And Esav said to Ya’akov, Let me eat now some of the adom (red stew); for I am famished; therefore was shmo called Edom.
31 And Ya’akov said, First sell me today thy bechorah (birthright, right of the firstborn).
32 And Esav said, Hinei, I am at the point of death; and what profit shall this bechorah do to me?
33 And Ya’akov said, Swear to me this day; and he swore unto him; and he sold his bechorah unto Ya’akov.
34 Then Ya’akov gave Esav lechem and adashim (lentils) stew; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way; thus Esav despised his bechorah.
