God sluit een verbond met Abram
7 En de Heer zei tegen hem: "Ik ben de Heer en Ik heb jou uit Ur in het land van de Chaldeeën gehaald, omdat Ik jou dit land wilde geven." 8 Abram zei: "Heer, hoe kan ik zeker weten dat het van mij zal zijn?" 9 De Heer zei tegen hem: "Breng Mij een koe van drie jaar, een geit van drie jaar, een schaap van drie jaar, een tortelduif en een gewone duif." 10 Hij haalde deze dieren voor Hem, sneed ze doormidden en legde de helften tegenover elkaar.[a] Alleen de vogels sneed hij niet door. 11 Toen er roofvogels op de dode dieren gingen zitten, joeg Abram die weg.
12 Toen de zon bijna onderging, viel Abram in een diepe slaap. Het werd angstaanjagend donker om hem heen. 13 Toen zei de Heer tegen Abram: "Luister: jouw familie ná jou zal als vreemdelingen wonen in een land dat niet hun eigen land is. Ze zullen slaven zijn van de mensen daar. Ze zullen er 400 jaar lang onderdrukt worden. 14 Ze zullen dat volk moeten dienen, maar Ik zal dat volk daarvoor straffen. Daarna zullen ze met heel veel spullen en heel veel vee uit dat land vertrekken. 15 Maar jij zal in vrede sterven, nadat je heel oud geworden bent. 16 Maar de kinderen van jouw achter-kleinkinderen zullen hier terugkomen. Want pas dan zullen de Amorieten die hier wonen zóveel verschrikkelijke dingen hebben gedaan, dat de maat vol is. Dan zal Ik hen straffen en hun land aan jouw familie geven."
17 De zon was ondergegaan en het was donker geworden. Toen gingen er een dikke rookwolk en een vuurvlam tussen de stukken van de dieren door.[b] Het leek op de rook van een rokende oven en op het vuur van een brandende fakkel. 18 Zo sloot de Heer die dag een verbond met Abram en Hij zei: "Ik zal dit land aan jouw familie geven. Vanaf de Beek van Egypte tot aan de grote rivier de Eufraat zal het van jou zijn.

- Genesis 15:10 In die tijd werd op die manier een verbond gesloten. De twee mannen die met elkaar een verbond sloten, liepen allebei tussen de delen van de dieren door, door het bloed. Het was een 'bloedverbond'. Daarbij zwoeren ze elkaar dat ze de ander altijd zouden helpen met alles wat ze bezaten. Als één van de twee het verbond verbrak, zou hij net als deze dieren gedood worden.
- Genesis 15:17 Hiermee wordt bedoeld dat God tussen de stukken doorging, verborgen in de rookwolk en in de vuurvlam. Alleen God gaat tussen de stukken door! God doet beloften, maar Abraham hoeft niets te beloven. Lees ook de aantekening bij vers 10.

7 The Lord also said to Abram, ‘I am the Lord. I brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to bring you to this land. I am giving it to you. It will belong to you.’ 8 But Abram said, ‘Almighty Lord, how can I be sure that this land will belong to me?’
9 The Lord said to Abram, ‘Bring a young cow, a goat and a male sheep to offer them to me. Each animal must be three years old. Also bring a dove and a young pigeon.’
10 Abram brought the three animals and the two birds to offer to God. Abram cut each animal in two pieces. He put the halves opposite each other. But he did not cut the birds in two pieces. 11 Some birds flew down to eat the animals' dead bodies. But Abram sent them away.
12 When the sun was going down, Abram started to sleep. Suddenly he became very afraid because it was dark all around him. 13 Then the Lord said to Abram, ‘Be sure of this: Your descendants will live in a foreign country. They will be strangers there. People will do bad things to them and they will become slaves. This will continue for 400 years. 14 But I will punish the people of that country who give them trouble. After this, your descendants will leave that country. They will take many valuable things with them. 15 But as for you, Abram, you will have a long life. When you die, you will have peace in your mind. 16 After four generations, your descendants will come back here to Canaan. At that time, I will punish the Amorites because they do very bad things. But the time has not yet arrived that I will punish them.’[a]
17 Then the sun went down and it became dark. Abram saw a pot that had coals in it. The coals were burning and making smoke. There was also a branch that burned with bright fire. These passed between the halves of the animals that Abram had cut in two pieces.[b]
18 On that day, the Lord made a covenant with Abram. The Lord promised, ‘I give this land to your descendants. The land starts from the river of Egypt and continues as far as the River Euphrates.

- 15:16 The Amorites lived in Canaan. They did not worship the Lord God. They worshipped false gods. They killed children and gave them as sacrifices to these gods. God told Abram that when his descendants returned to Canaan, he would punish the Amorites at that time.
- 15:17 The fire showed that God was passing between the halves of the animals. This showed that he was making a covenant with Abram.

7 He also said to him, “I am the Lord, who brought you out(A) of Ur of the Chaldeans(B) to give you this land to take possession of it.”(C)
8 But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord,(D) how can I know(E) that I will gain possession of it?”(F)
9 So the Lord said to him, “Bring me a heifer,(G) a goat and a ram, each three years old,(H) along with a dove and a young pigeon.(I)”
10 Abram brought all these to him, cut them in two and arranged the halves opposite each other;(J) the birds, however, he did not cut in half.(K) 11 Then birds of prey came down on the carcasses,(L) but Abram drove them away.
12 As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep,(M) and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him. 13 Then the Lord said to him, “Know for certain that for four hundred years(N) your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be enslaved(O) and mistreated there. 14 But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out(P) with great possessions.(Q) 15 You, however, will go to your ancestors(R) in peace and be buried at a good old age.(S) 16 In the fourth generation(T) your descendants will come back here,(U) for the sin of the Amorites(V) has not yet reached its full measure.”
17 When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch(W) appeared and passed between the pieces.(X) 18 On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram(Y) and said, “To your descendants I give this land,(Z) from the Wadi[a] of Egypt(AA) to the great river, the Euphrates(AB)—
