5 De Haggeus próféta és Zakariás próféta, Iddó fia, prófétált a Júdában és Jeruzsálemben levő zsidóknak, Izráel Istene nevében, aki fölöttük volt.
2 Akkor Zerubbábel, Sealtiél fia és Jésúa, Jócádák fia hozzáfogott, és elkezdte Isten házának az építését Jeruzsálemben. Velük voltak Isten prófétái, akik támogatták őket.
3 Abban az időben odament hozzájuk Tattenaj, a Folyamon túli tartomány helytartója és Setar-Bóznaj meg hivatalnoktársaik, és ezt mondták nekik: Ki adott nektek parancsot arra, hogy ezt a házat fölépítsétek, és gerendázatát elkészítsétek?

10 Nevüket is megkérdeztük, hogy tudassuk veled, és megírjuk azoknak a férfiaknak a nevét, akik az élükön állnak.

16 Ekkor Sésbaccar el is jött, lerakta Isten házának az alapját Jeruzsálemben, és azóta egészen mostanáig épül, de még nincs készen.

2 Akkor fölkelének Zorobábel, Sealtiél fia és Jésua, a Jósádák fia, és hozzá kezdének Isten háza építéséhez, mely Jeruzsálemben van, s velök valának Isten prófétái, támogatván õket.
3 Abban az idõben jöve hozzájok Tattenai folyóvizen túli helytartó, és Sethar-bóznai és társaik, és így szólának nékik: Ki adott néktek szabadságot, hogy e házat építsétek s e kõfalat készítsétek?
4 Ekkor megmondánk nékik ily módon, hogy kik ama férfiak névszerint, kik ez épületet építik.
5 És az õ Istenök szeme vala a zsidók vénein, hogy nem akadályozzák meg õket az építésben, míg az ügy Dárius elébe jutand, a mikor is levélben fognak felelni e dologra nézve.
6 Mássa a levélnek, melyet küldött Tattenai folyóvizen túli helytartó, és Sethar-bóznai és az õ társai, az Afarsakeusok, a kik a folyóvizen túl lakának, Dárius királyhoz.
7 Tudósítást küldének ugyanis hozzá, ekként levén az írva: "Dárius királynak minden békesség!
8 Tudtára legyen a királynak, hogy elmentünk Júda tartományába, a nagy Istennek házához, és az építtetik nagy kövekbõl, és fa rakatik a falakra, és e munka szorgalmatosan folyik, és jó szerencsés lészen az õ kezök által.
9 Ekkor megkérdénk azokat a véneket, ily módon szólván hozzájok: Ki adott néktek szabadságot, hogy e házat építsétek, s hogy e kõfalat készítsétek?
10 Sõt még neveiket is megkérdeztük tõlük, hogy tudassuk veled, hogy megírhassuk azon férfiak nevét, kik fejeik.
11 És ekképen felelének nékünk, mondván: Mi az Õ, a menny és föld Istenének szolgái vagyunk, és építjük e házat, mely ennekelõtte sok esztendõkön át meg vala építve, és Izráelnek egy nagy királya építé és végezé be azt.
12 De minekutána haragra ingerelték volt atyáink a mennynek Istenét, adá õket a Babilóniabeli Káldeus királynak, Nabukodonozornak kezébe, a ki e házat lerontotta, és a népet Babilóniába rabságra vitte.
13 Azonban Czírusnak, Babilónia királyának elsõ esztendejében Czírus király szabadságot adott, hogy Istennek ezt a házát megépítenék.
14 Sõt az Isten házához való arany és ezüst edényeket is, a melyeket Nabukodonozor hozott vala el a jeruzsálemi templomból s bevitte volt azokat a babilóniai templomba, kihozatá Czírus király a babilóniai templomból s adatá azokat annak a Sesbassár nevûnek, a kit helytartóul rendelt;
15 És monda néki: Vedd ez edényeket, menj és helyezd el azokat a jeruzsálemi templomba, és az Isten háza építtessék meg [elõbbi] helyén.
16 Ekkor ez a Sesbassár eljött, letevé az Isten házának alapkövét, mely Jeruzsálemben van, és attól fogva mindeddig építtetik, és még sem végzõdött be.
17 Mostan azért, ha tetszik a királynak, nézzen utána valaki a király kincstartó házában, ott Babilóniában, ha úgy van-é, hogy Czírus király szabadságot adott az Isten házának megépítésére, mely Jeruzsálemben van, s a király akaratját erre nézve küldje hozzánk."

5 Cuando los profetas Hageo[a](A) y Zacarías, hijo de Iddo(B), profetizaron a los judíos que estaban en Judá y en Jerusalén, en el nombre del Dios de Israel que estaba sobre ellos, 2 Zorobabel, hijo de Salatiel, y Jesúa, hijo de Josadac(C), se levantaron entonces y comenzaron a reedificar la casa de Dios en[b] Jerusalén; y los profetas de Dios estaban con ellos apoyándolos(D). 3 En aquel tiempo Tatnai, gobernador de la provincia al otro lado del río[c], y Setar-boznai y sus compañeros(E) vinieron a ellos y les hablaron así: ¿Quién os dio orden de reedificar este templo[d] y de terminar este edificio(F)? 4 También[e] les dijeron así: ¿Cuáles son[f] los nombres de los hombres(G) que están reedificando este edificio? 5 Pero el ojo de su Dios velaba[g](H) sobre los ancianos de los judíos, y no les detuvieron la obra hasta que un informe llegara a Darío, y volviera una respuesta escrita tocante al asunto.

5 But when the prophets Haggai and Zechariah son of Iddo(A) prophesied to the Jews who were in Judah and Jerusalem, in the name of the God of Israel who was over them, 2 Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and Jeshua son of Jozadak(B) began to rebuild God’s house in Jerusalem. The prophets of God(C) were with them, helping them.
3 At that time Tattenai the governor of the region west of the Euphrates River, Shethar-bozenai, and their colleagues(D) came to the Jews and asked, “Who gave you the order to rebuild this temple and finish this structure?” [a](E) 4 They also asked them, “What are the names of the workers[b] who are constructing this building?” 5 But God was watching[c] over(F) the Jewish elders. These men wouldn’t stop them until a report was sent to Darius, so that they could receive written instructions about this matter.
The Letter to Darius
6 This is the text of the letter that Tattenai the governor of the region west of the Euphrates River, Shethar-bozenai, and their colleagues, the officials in the region, sent to King Darius. 7 They sent him a report, written as follows:
To King Darius:
All greetings.
8 Let it be known to the king that we went to the house of the great God in the province of Judah. It is being built with cut[d] stones, and its beams are being set in the walls. This work is being done diligently and succeeding through the people’s efforts.(G) 9 So we questioned the elders and asked, “Who gave you the order to rebuild this temple and finish this structure?” 10 We also asked them for their names, so that we could write down the names of their leaders for your information.
11 This is the reply they gave us:
We are the servants of the God of the heavens and earth, and we are rebuilding the temple that was built many years ago, which a great king of Israel built and finished.(H) 12 But since our ancestors angered the God of the heavens, he handed them over to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this temple and deported the people to Babylon.(I) 13 However, in the first year of King Cyrus of Babylon, he issued a decree to rebuild the house of God.(J) 14 He also took from the temple in Babylon the gold and silver articles of God’s house that Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the temple in Jerusalem and carried them to the temple in Babylon.(K) He released them from the temple in Babylon to a man named Sheshbazzar, the governor by the appointment of King Cyrus.(L) 15 Cyrus told him, “Take these articles, put them in the temple in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be rebuilt on its original site.”(M) 16 Then this same Sheshbazzar came and laid the foundation of God’s house in Jerusalem.(N) It has been under construction from that time until now,(O) but it has not been completed.
17 So if it pleases the king, let a search of the royal archives[e] in Babylon be conducted to see if it is true that a decree was issued by King Cyrus to rebuild the house of God in Jerusalem.(P) Let the king’s decision regarding this matter be sent to us.(Q)

Tattenai’s Letter to Darius
5 Now Haggai(A) the prophet and Zechariah(B) the prophet, a descendant of Iddo, prophesied(C) to the Jews in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel, who was over them. 2 Then Zerubbabel(D) son of Shealtiel and Joshua(E) son of Jozadak set to work(F) to rebuild the house of God in Jerusalem. And the prophets of God were with them, supporting them.
3 At that time Tattenai,(G) governor of Trans-Euphrates, and Shethar-Bozenai(H) and their associates went to them and asked, “Who authorized you to rebuild this temple and to finish it?”(I) 4 They[a] also asked, “What are the names of those who are constructing this building?” 5 But the eye of their God(J) was watching over the elders of the Jews, and they were not stopped until a report could go to Darius and his written reply be received.
6 This is a copy of the letter that Tattenai, governor of Trans-Euphrates, and Shethar-Bozenai and their associates, the officials of Trans-Euphrates, sent to King Darius. 7 The report they sent him read as follows:
To King Darius:
Cordial greetings.
8 The king should know that we went to the district of Judah, to the temple of the great God. The people are building it with large stones and placing the timbers in the walls. The work(K) is being carried on with diligence and is making rapid progress under their direction.
9 We questioned the elders and asked them, “Who authorized you to rebuild this temple and to finish it?”(L) 10 We also asked them their names, so that we could write down the names of their leaders for your information.
11 This is the answer they gave us:
“We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and we are rebuilding the temple(M) that was built many years ago, one that a great king of Israel built and finished. 12 But because our ancestors angered(N) the God of heaven, he gave them into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar the Chaldean, king of Babylon, who destroyed this temple and deported the people to Babylon.(O)
13 “However, in the first year of Cyrus king of Babylon, King Cyrus issued a decree(P) to rebuild this house of God. 14 He even removed from the temple[b] of Babylon the gold and silver articles of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the temple in Jerusalem and brought to the temple[c] in Babylon.(Q) Then King Cyrus gave them to a man named Sheshbazzar,(R) whom he had appointed governor, 15 and he told him, ‘Take these articles and go and deposit them in the temple in Jerusalem. And rebuild the house of God on its site.’
16 “So this Sheshbazzar came and laid the foundations of the house of God(S) in Jerusalem. From that day to the present it has been under construction but is not yet finished.”
17 Now if it pleases the king, let a search be made in the royal archives(T) of Babylon to see if King Cyrus did in fact issue a decree to rebuild this house of God in Jerusalem. Then let the king send us his decision in this matter.
