Exodus 33:12-23

The Promise of God’s Presence

¹²Then Moses said to the Lord, “See, ^(A)You say to me, ‘Bring up this people.’ But You have not let me know whom You will send with me. Yet You have said, ^(B)‘I know you by name, and you have also found grace in My sight.’ ¹³Now therefore, I pray, ^(C)if I have found grace in Your sight, ^(D)show me now Your way, that I may know You and that I may find grace in Your sight. And consider that this nation is ^(E)Your people.”

¹⁴And He said, ^(F)“My Presence will go with you, and I will give you ^(G)rest.”

¹⁵Then he said to Him, ^(H)“If Your Presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here. ¹⁶For how then will it be known that Your people and I have found grace in Your sight, ^(I)except You go with us? So we ^(J)shall be separate, Your people and I, from all the people who are upon the face of the earth.”

¹⁷So the Lord said to Moses, ^(K)“I will also do this thing that you have spoken; for you have found grace in My sight, and I know you by name.”

¹⁸And he said, “Please, show me ^(L)Your glory.”

¹⁹Then He said, “I will make all My ^(M)goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before you. ^(N)I will be gracious to whom I will be ^(O)gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.” ²⁰But He said, “You cannot see My face; for ^(P)no man shall see Me, and live.” ²¹And the Lord said, “Here is a place by Me, and you shall stand on the rock. ²²So it shall be, while My glory passes by, that I will put you ^(Q)in the cleft of the rock, and will ^(R)cover you with My hand while I pass by. ²³Then I will take away My hand, and you shall see My back; but My face shall ^(S)not be seen.”

¹⁵וַיֹּ֖אמֶר אֵלָ֑יו אִם־אֵ֤ין פָּנֶ֙יךָ֙ הֹלְכִ֔ים אַֽל־תַּעֲלֵ֖נוּ מִזֶּֽה׃

¹⁶וּבַמֶּ֣ה׀ יִוָּדַ֣ע אֵפ֗וֹא כִּֽי־מָצָ֨אתִי חֵ֤ן בְּעֵינֶ֙יךָ֙ אֲנִ֣י וְעַמֶּ֔ךָ הֲל֖וֹא בְּלֶכְתְּךָ֣ עִמָּ֑נוּ וְנִפְלֵ֙ינוּ֙ אֲנִ֣י וְעַמְּךָ֔ מִכָּ֨ל־הָעָ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֖ר עַל־פְּנֵ֥י הָאֲדָמָֽה׃ פ

²⁰וַיֹּ֕אמֶר לֹ֥א תוּכַ֖ל לִרְאֹ֣ת אֶת־פָּנָ֑י כִּ֛י לֹֽא־יִרְאַ֥נִי הָאָדָ֖ם וָחָֽי׃

Exodus 33:12-23

Young's Literal Translation

¹²And Moses saith unto Jehovah, `See, Thou art saying unto me, Bring up this people, and Thou hast not caused me to know whom Thou dost send with me; and Thou hast said, I have known thee by name, and also thou hast found grace in Mine eyes.

¹³`And now, if, I pray Thee, I have found grace in Thine eyes, cause me to know, I pray Thee, Thy way, and I know Thee, so that I find grace in Thine eyes, and consider that this nation [is] Thy people;'

¹⁴and He saith, `My presence doth go, and I have given rest to thee.'

¹⁵And he saith unto Him, `If Thy presence is not going -- take us not up from this [place];

¹⁶and in what is it known now, that I have found grace in Thine eyes -- I and Thy people -- is it not in Thy going with us? and we have been distinguished -- I and Thy people -- from all the people who [are] on the face of the ground.'

¹⁷And Jehovah saith unto Moses, `Even this thing which thou hast spoken I do; for thou hast found grace in Mine eyes, and I know thee by name.'

¹⁸And he saith, `Shew me, I pray Thee, Thine honour;'

¹⁹and He saith, `I cause all My goodness to pass before thy face, and have called concerning the Name of Jehovah before thee, and favoured him whom I favour, and loved him whom I love.'

²⁰He saith also, `Thou art unable to see My face, for man doth not see Me, and live;'

²¹Jehovah also saith, `Lo, a place [is] by Me, and thou hast stood on the rock,

²²and it hath come to pass, in the passing by of Mine honour, that I have set thee in a cleft of the rock, and spread out My hands over thee, until My passing by,

²³and I have turned aside My hands, and thou hast seen My back parts, and My face is not seen.'

Moses Intercedes

¹²Then Moses said to the Lord, “See, You say to me, ‘^(A)Bring up this people!’ But You Yourself have not let me know ^(B)whom You will send with me. ^(C)Moreover, You have said, ‘I have known you by name, and you have also found favor in My sight.’ ¹³Now then, if I have found favor in Your sight in any way, please ^(D)let me know Your ways so that I may know You, in order that I may find favor in Your sight. ^(E)Consider too, that this nation is Your people.” ¹⁴And He said, “^(F)My presence shall go with you, and ^(G)I will give you rest.” ¹⁵Then he said to Him, “^(H)If Your presence does not go with us, do not lead us up from here. ¹⁶For how then can it be known that I have found favor in Your sight, I and Your people? Is it not by Your going with us, so that ^(I)we, I and Your people, may be distinguished from all the other people who are on the face of the ^[a]earth?”
