The Plague of Locusts

10 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh, for (A)I have [a]hardened his heart and the heart of his servants, that I may [b]perform these signs of Mine [c]among them, and (B)that you may tell in the [d]hearing of your son, and of your grandson, how I made a mockery of the Egyptians and how I [e]performed My signs among them, (C)that you may know that I am the Lord.”

Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said to him, “Thus says the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, ‘How long will you refuse to (D)humble yourself before Me? (E)Let My people go, that they may serve Me. For if you refuse to let My people go, behold, tomorrow I will bring locusts into your territory. They shall cover the surface of the land, so that no one will be able to see the land. (F)They will also eat the rest of what has escaped—what is left to you from the hail—and they will eat every tree which sprouts for you out of the field. Then (G)your houses shall be filled and the houses of all your servants and the houses of all the Egyptians, something which neither your fathers nor your grandfathers have seen, from the day that they [f]came upon the earth until this day.’” And he turned and went out from Pharaoh. (H)Pharaoh’s servants said to him, “How long will this man be (I)a snare to us? Let the men go, that they may serve the Lord their God. Do you not [g]realize that Egypt is destroyed?” So Moses and Aaron (J)were brought back to Pharaoh, and he said to them, “(K)Go, serve the Lord your God! [h]Who are the ones that are going?” Moses said, “(L)We shall go with our young and our old; with our sons and our daughters, (M)with our flocks and our herds we shall go, for we [i]must hold a feast to the Lord.” 10 Then he said to them, “Thus may the Lord be with you, [j]if ever I let you and your little ones go! Take heed, for evil is [k]in your mind. 11 Not so! Go now, the men among you, and serve the Lord, for [l]that is what you desire.” So (N)they were driven out from Pharaoh’s presence.

12 Then the Lord said to Moses, “(O)Stretch out your hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts, that they may come up on the land of Egypt and (P)eat every plant of the land, even all that the hail has left.” 13 So Moses stretched out his staff over the land of Egypt, and the Lord directed an east wind on the land all that day and all that night; and when it was morning, the east wind [m]brought the (Q)locusts. 14 (R)The locusts came up over all the land of Egypt and settled in all the territory of Egypt; they were very [n]numerous. There had never been so many [o]locusts, nor would there be so many [p]again. 15 For they covered the surface of the whole land, so that the land was darkened; and they (S)ate every plant of the land and all the fruit of the trees that the hail had left. Thus nothing green was left on tree or plant of the field through all the land of Egypt. 16 Then Pharaoh hurriedly (T)called for Moses and Aaron, and he said, “(U)I have sinned against the Lord your God and against you. 17 Now therefore, please forgive my sin only this once, and (V)make supplication to the Lord your God, that He would only remove this death from me.” 18 (W)He went out from Pharaoh and made supplication to the Lord. 19 So the Lord shifted the wind to a very strong west wind which took up the locusts and drove them into the [q]Red Sea; not one locust was left in all the territory of Egypt. 20 But (X)the Lord [r]hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he did not let the sons of Israel go.

Darkness over the Land

21 Then the Lord said to Moses, “(Y)Stretch out your hand toward the sky, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even a darkness (Z)which may be felt.” 22 So Moses stretched out his hand toward the sky, and there was (AA)thick darkness in all the land of Egypt for three days. 23 They did not see one another, nor did anyone rise from his place for three days, (AB)but all the sons of Israel had light in their dwellings. 24 Then Pharaoh (AC)called to Moses, and said, “Go, serve the Lord; only let your flocks and your herds be detained. Even (AD)your little ones may go with you.” 25 But Moses said, “You must also [s]let us have sacrifices and burnt offerings, that we may [t]sacrifice them to the Lord our God. 26 (AE)Therefore, our livestock too shall go with us; not a hoof shall be left behind, for we shall take some of them to serve the Lord our God. And until we arrive there, we ourselves do not know with what we shall serve the Lord.” 27 But (AF)the Lord [u]hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he was not willing to let them go. 28 Then Pharaoh said to him, “(AG)Get away from me! [v]Beware, do not see my face again, for in the day you see my face you shall die!” 29 Moses said, “You are right; (AH)I shall never see your face again!”

The Last Plague

11 Now the Lord said to Moses, “One more plague I will bring on Pharaoh and on Egypt; (AI)after that he will let you go from here. When he lets you go, he will surely drive you out from here completely. Speak now in the [w]hearing of the people that (AJ)each man ask from his neighbor and each woman from her neighbor for articles of silver and articles of gold.” (AK)The Lord gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians. (AL)Furthermore, the man Moses himself was [x]greatly esteemed in the land of Egypt, both in the sight of Pharaoh’s servants and in the sight of the people.

Moses said, “Thus says the Lord, ‘About (AM)midnight I am going out into the midst of Egypt, and (AN)all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of the Pharaoh who sits on his throne, even to the firstborn of the slave girl who is behind the millstones; all the firstborn of the cattle as well. Moreover, there shall be (AO)a great cry in all the land of Egypt, such as there has not been before and such as shall never be again. (AP)But against any of the sons of Israel a dog will not even [y]bark, whether against man or beast, that you may [z]understand how the Lord makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel.’ (AQ)All these your servants will come down to me and bow themselves [aa]before me, saying, ‘Go out, you and all the people who [ab]follow you,’ and after that I will go out.” (AR)And he went out from Pharaoh in hot anger.

Then the Lord said to Moses, “(AS)Pharaoh will not listen to you, so (AT)that My wonders will be multiplied in the land of Egypt.” 10 (AU)Moses and Aaron performed all these wonders before Pharaoh; yet (AV)the Lord [ac]hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he did not let the sons of Israel go out of his land.

The Passover Lamb

12 Now the Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of [ad]Egypt, (AW)This month shall be the beginning of months for you; it is to be the first month of the year to you. Speak to all the congregation of Israel, saying, ‘On the tenth of this month they are each one to take a [ae]lamb for themselves, according to their fathers’ households, a [af]lamb for [ag]each household. Now if the household is too small for a [ah]lamb, then he and his neighbor nearest to his house are to take one according to the [ai]number of persons in them; according to [aj]what each man should eat, you are to [ak]divide the lamb. Your [al]lamb shall be (AX)an unblemished male a year old; you may take it from the sheep or from the goats. [am]You shall keep it until the (AY)fourteenth day of the same month, then the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel is to kill it [an](AZ)at twilight. (BA)Moreover, they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel [ao]of the houses in which they eat it. They shall eat the flesh (BB)that same night, (BC)roasted with fire, and they shall eat it with (BD)unleavened bread [ap](BE)and bitter herbs. Do not eat any of it raw or boiled at all with water, but rather (BF)roasted with fire, both its head and its legs along with (BG)its entrails. 10 (BH)And you shall not leave any of it over until morning, but whatever is left of it until morning, you shall burn with fire. 11 Now you shall eat it in this manner: with your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it in haste—it is (BI)the Lord’s Passover. 12 For (BJ)I will go through the land of Egypt on that night, and will strike down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and (BK)against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments—(BL)I am the Lord. 13 (BM)The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you [aq]live; and when I see the blood I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you [ar]to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.

Feast of Unleavened Bread

14 ‘Now (BN)this day will be (BO)a memorial to you, and you shall celebrate it as a feast to the Lord; throughout your generations you are to celebrate it as [as](BP)a permanent ordinance. 15 (BQ)Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, but on the first day you shall [at]remove leaven from your houses; for whoever eats anything leavened from the first day until the seventh day, (BR)that [au]person shall be cut off from Israel. 16 (BS)On the first day you shall have a holy assembly, and another holy assembly on the seventh day; no work at all shall be done on them, except what must be eaten [av]by every person, that alone may be [aw]prepared by you. 17 You shall also observe (BT)the Feast of Unleavened Bread, for on this (BU)very day I brought your hosts out of the land of Egypt; therefore you shall observe this day throughout your generations as (BV)a [ax]permanent ordinance. 18 (BW)In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at evening, you shall eat unleavened bread, until the twenty-first day of the month at evening. 19 (BX)Seven days there shall be no leaven found in your houses; for whoever eats what is leavened, that [ay](BY)person shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he is an alien or a native of the land. 20 You shall not eat anything leavened; in all your dwellings you shall eat unleavened bread.’”

21 Then (BZ)Moses called for all the elders of Israel and said to them, “[az]Go and (CA)take for yourselves [ba]lambs according to your families, and slay (CB)the Passover lamb. 22 (CC)You shall take a bunch of hyssop and dip it in the blood which is in the basin, and [bb]apply some of the blood that is in the basin to the lintel and the two doorposts; and none of you shall go outside the door of his house until morning.

A Memorial of Redemption

23 For (CD)the Lord will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when He sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the Lord will pass over the door and will (CE)not allow the (CF)destroyer to come in to your houses to smite you. 24 And (CG)you shall observe this event as an ordinance for you and your children forever. 25 When you enter the land which the Lord will give you, as He has [bc]promised, you shall observe this [bd]rite. 26 (CH)And when your children say to you, ‘[be]What does this rite mean to you?’ 27 you shall say, ‘It is a Passover sacrifice to (CI)the Lord [bf]who passed over the houses of the sons of Israel in Egypt when He smote the Egyptians, but [bg]spared our homes.’” (CJ)And the people bowed low and worshiped.

28 Then the sons of Israel went and did so; just as the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron, so they did.

29 Now it came about at (CK)midnight that (CL)the Lord struck all (CM)the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the captive who was in the dungeon, and all the firstborn of (CN)cattle. 30 Pharaoh arose in the night, he and all his servants and all the Egyptians, and there was (CO)a great cry in Egypt, for there was no home where there was not someone dead. 31 Then (CP)he called for Moses and Aaron at night and said, “Rise up, (CQ)get out from among my people, both you and the sons of Israel; and go, [bh]worship the Lord, as you have said. 32 Take (CR)both your flocks and your herds, as you have said, and go, and bless me also.”

Exodus of Israel

33 (CS)The Egyptians urged the people, to send them out of the land in haste, for they said, “We will all be dead.” 34 So the people took (CT)their dough before it was leavened, with their kneading bowls bound up in the clothes on their shoulders.

35 (CU)Now the sons of Israel had done according to the word of Moses, for they had requested from the Egyptians articles of silver and articles of gold, and clothing; 36 and the Lord had given the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they let them have their request. Thus they (CV)plundered the Egyptians.

37 Now the (CW)sons of Israel journeyed from (CX)Rameses to Succoth, about (CY)six hundred thousand men on foot, aside from children. 38 A (CZ)mixed multitude also went up with them, [bi]along with flocks and herds, a (DA)very large number of livestock. 39 They baked the dough which they had brought out of Egypt into cakes of unleavened bread. For it had not become leavened, since they were (DB)driven out of Egypt and could not delay, nor had they [bj]prepared any provisions for themselves.

40 Now the time [bk]that the sons of Israel lived in Egypt was (DC)four hundred and thirty years. 41 And at the end of four hundred and thirty years, [bl]to (DD)the very day, (DE)all the hosts of the Lord went out from the land of Egypt.

Ordinance of the Passover

42 (DF)It is a night [bm]to be observed for the Lord for having brought them out from the land of Egypt; this night is for the Lord, [bn]to be observed [bo]by all the sons of Israel throughout their generations.

43 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “This is the ordinance of (DG)the Passover: no [bp](DH)foreigner is to eat of it; 44 but every man’s (DI)slave purchased with money, after you have circumcised him, then he may eat of it. 45 (DJ)A sojourner or a hired servant shall not eat of it. 46 It is to be eaten in a single house; you are not to bring forth any of the flesh outside of the house, (DK)nor are you to break any bone of it. 47 (DL)All the congregation of Israel are to [bq]celebrate this. 48 But (DM)if a [br]stranger sojourns with you, and [bs]celebrates the Passover to the Lord, let all his males be circumcised, and then let him come near to [bt]celebrate it; and he shall be like a native of the land. But no uncircumcised person may eat of it. 49 [bu](DN)The same law shall [bv]apply to the native as to the [bw]stranger who sojourns among you.”

50 Then all the sons of Israel did so; they did just as the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron. 51 And on that same day (DO)the Lord brought the sons of Israel out of the land of Egypt [bx](DP)by their hosts.

Consecration of the Firstborn

13 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, (DQ)Sanctify to Me every firstborn, the first [by]offspring of every womb among the sons of Israel, both of man and beast; it belongs to Me.”

Moses said to the people, “(DR)Remember this day in which you went out from Egypt, from the house of [bz]slavery; for (DS)by [ca]a powerful hand the Lord brought you out from this place. (DT)And nothing leavened shall be eaten. On this day in the (DU)month of Abib, you are about to go forth. It shall be when the Lord (DV)brings you to the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Hivite and the Jebusite, which (DW)He swore to your fathers to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey, (DX)that you shall [cb]observe this rite in this month. For (DY)seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, and on the seventh day there shall be a feast to the Lord. Unleavened bread shall be eaten throughout the seven days; and (DZ)nothing leavened shall be seen [cc]among you, nor shall any leaven be seen [cd]among you in all your borders. (EA)You shall tell your son on that day, saying, ‘It is because of what the Lord did for me when I came out of Egypt.’ And (EB)it shall [ce]serve as a sign to you on your hand, and as a reminder [cf]on your forehead, that the law of the Lord may be in your mouth; for with (EC)a powerful hand the Lord brought you out of Egypt. 10 Therefore, you shall (ED)keep this ordinance at its appointed time from [cg]year to year.

11 “Now when (EE)the Lord brings you to the land of the Canaanite, as (EF)He swore to you and to your fathers, and gives it to you, 12 (EG)you shall [ch]devote to the Lord the first [ci]offspring of every womb, and [cj]the first offspring of every beast that you own; the males belong to the Lord. 13 But (EH)every first [ck]offspring of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb, but if you do not redeem it, then you shall break its neck; and (EI)every firstborn of man among your sons you shall redeem. 14 (EJ)And it shall be when your son asks you in time to come, saying, ‘What is this?’ then you shall say to him, ‘(EK)With a [cl]powerful hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, from the house of [cm]slavery. 15 It came about, when Pharaoh was stubborn about letting us go, that the (EL)Lord killed every firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the firstborn of man and the firstborn of beast. Therefore, I sacrifice to the Lord the males, the first [cn]offspring of every womb, but every firstborn of my sons I redeem.’ 16 So (EM)it shall [co]serve as a sign on your hand and as [cp]phylacteries [cq]on your forehead, for with a [cr]powerful hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt.”

Parashat Bo

Locusts, Darkness

10 Then Adonai said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh, because I have hardened his heart and the heart of his servants, so that I might show these My signs in their midst, and so you may tell your son and your grandchildren what I have done in Egypt, as well as My signs that I did among them, so you may know that I am Adonai.”

So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said to him, “This is what Adonai, the God of the Hebrews, says: How long would you refuse to humble yourself before Me? Let My people go, so they may serve Me. Or else, if you refuse to let My people go, behold, tomorrow I will bring locusts into your borders. Then they will cover the face of the earth, so that no one will be able to see the ground. They will eat the remainder of what escaped—whatever is left from the hail—and eat every tree that grows for you out in the field. Your houses will be filled, as will the houses of all your servants and the houses of all the Egyptians, as neither your fathers nor your grandfathers have seen since the day they were on the earth until today!” Then he turned and went out from Pharaoh.

Pharaoh’s servants said to him, “How long will this man be a snare to us? Send the men, so they may serve Adonai their God. Don’t you realize yet that Egypt is being destroyed?”

So Moses and Aaron were brought to Pharaoh again. “Go, serve Adonai your God,” he said. “But who will be going?”

Moses answered, “We will go with our young and our elderly, our sons and our daughters. We will go with our flocks and our herds—for we must have Adonai’s feast for Him.”

10 But he said to them, “So may Adonai be with you, if I ever do let you go, with your little ones. See clearly now! Evil is in your face. 11 Not so! Go now—the men—and serve Adonai! For that’s what you were seeking.” Then they were driven out from Pharaoh’s presence.

12 Then Adonai said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts, so they may come up onto Egypt and eat every plant in the land—everything the hail has left.” 13 So Moses stretched out his staff over the land of Egypt, and Adonai brought an east wind over the land all that day and all night. When it was morning, the east wind brought the locusts. 14 The locusts came up over all the land of Egypt and rested on the entire territory of Egypt. So dense—there was nothing like it before them, nor will there ever be again. 15 For they covered the face of the whole earth so that the land was darkened, and they ate every plant in the land and all the fruit from the trees that the hail had left. No green thing remained, not a tree or a plant of the field throughout all the land of Egypt.

16 Then Pharaoh quickly called for Moses and Aaron and said, “I have sinned against Adonai your God and against you. 17 Now forgive my sin, only this once, please! So pray to Adonai your God—just so He would take this death away from me!”

18 So he went out from Pharaoh and prayed to Adonai. 19 Then Adonai turned the wind from the west, very strong, and it carried off the locusts and drove them into the Sea of Reeds. Not one locust remained in all the territory of Egypt. 20 But Adonai hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he did not let Bnei-Yisrael go.

21 Then Adonai said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward heaven, and there will be darkness over the land of Egypt—a darkness that may be felt.”

22 So Moses stretched out his hand toward heaven, and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt for three days. 23 They could not see one another, nor could anyone rise from his place for three days. Yet all Bnei-Yisrael had light within their dwellings.

24 Pharaoh called Moses and said, “Go, serve Adonai. Only let your flocks and your herds remain. Your little ones may also go with you.”

25 But Moses said, “You must also put sacrifices and burnt offerings into our hand, then we will do it for Adonai our God. 26 Our cattle must also go with us—not a hoof may be left behind. We must take from them to serve Adonai our God. We ourselves will not know how we will serve Adonai until we arrive there.”

27 But Adonai hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he was unwilling to let them go. 28 So Pharaoh said to him, “Go away from me! Take heed never to see my face again, because on the day you do, you will die!”

29 “Right!” Moses said. “You said it! May I never see your face again!”

Final Plague: Death

11 Now Adonai had said to Moses, “I will bring one more plague upon Pharaoh and on Egypt. After that, he will let you go from here. When he lets you go, he will surely thrust you out altogether from here. Speak now into the ears of the people, and let every man ask from his neighbor and every woman from her neighbor for articles of silver and gold.” Adonai gave the people favor in the eyes of the Egyptians. Indeed, the man Moses was very great in the land of Egypt, in the eyes of Pharaoh’s servants and in the eyes of the people.

So Moses said, “This is what Adonai says: At around midnight I will go out into the midst of Egypt, and all the firstborn in the land of Egypt will die—from the firstborn of Pharaoh sitting on his throne to the firstborn of the maidservant behind the mill, along with all the firstborn cattle. [a] There will be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt, the likes of which has never been before nor will ever be again. But not so much as a dog will growl against any of Bnei-Yisrael, neither man nor beast—so that you may know that Adonai makes a distinction between the Egyptians and Israel. All these servants of yours will come down to me and bow down to me, saying, ‘Get out, you and all the people who follow you!’ After that, I will go.” Then he went out from Pharaoh hot with anger.

Adonai had said to Moses, “Pharaoh will not listen to you, so that My wonders may be multiplied in the land of Egypt.” 10 So Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh, yet Adonai hardened Pharaoh’s heart, so he did not let Bnei-Yisrael go out of his land.

The Passover Lamb

12 Now Adonai spoke to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt saying, “This month will mark the beginning of months for you; it is to be the first month of the year for you. Tell all the congregation of Israel that on the tenth day of this month, each man is to take a lamb for his family one lamb for the household. But if the household is too small for a lamb, then he and his nearest neighbor are to take one according to the number of the people. According to each person eating, you are to make your count for the lamb. Your lamb is to be without blemish, a year old male.[b] You may take it from the sheep or from the goats. You must watch over it until the fourteenth day of the same month. Then the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel is to slaughter it at twilight. [c] They are to take the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the crossbeam of the houses where they will eat it. They are to eat the meat that night, roasted over a fire. With matzot and bitter herbs[d] they are to eat it. Do not eat any of it raw or boiled with water, but only roasted with fire—its head with its legs and its innards. 10 So let nothing of it remain until the morning. Whatever remains until the morning you are to burn with fire. 11 Also you are to eat it this way: with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet and your staff in your hand. You are to eat it in haste. It is Adonai’s Passover.

12 “For I will go through the land of Egypt on that night and strike down every firstborn, both men and animals, and I will execute judgments against all the gods of Egypt. I am Adonai. 13 The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are.[e] When I see the blood, I will pass over you. So there will be no plague among you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.

14 “This day is to be a memorial for you.[f] You are to keep it as a feast to Adonai. Throughout your generations you are to keep it as an eternal ordinance. 15 For seven days you are to eat matzot, but on the first day you must remove hametz from your houses,[g] for whoever eats hametz from the first day until the seventh day, that soul will be cut off from Israel. 16 The first day is to be a holy assembly for you as well as the seventh day. No manner of work is to be done on those days, except what is to be eaten by every person—that alone may be prepared by you. 17 So you are to observe the Feast of Matzot, for on this very same day have I brought your ranks out of the land of Egypt. Therefore you are to observe this day throughout your generations as an eternal ordinance.

18 During the first month in the evening of the fourteenth day of the month, you are to eat matzot, until the evening of the twenty-first day of the month. 19 For seven days no hametz is to be found in your houses, for whoever eats hametz, that soul will be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he is an outsider or one who is born in the land. 20 You are to eat no hametz; in all your houses you are to eat matzot.”

21 Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel and said to them, “Go, select lambs for your families and slaughter the Passover lamb. [h] 22 You are to take a bundle of hyssop, dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and apply it to the crossbeam and two doorposts with the blood from the basin. None of you may go out the door of his house until morning. 23 Adonai will pass through to strike down the Egyptians, but when He sees the blood on the crossbeam and the two doorposts, Adonai will pass over that door, and will not allow the destroyer to come into your houses to strike you down. 24 Also you are to observe this event as an eternal ordinance, for you and your children.

25 “When you come into the land which Adonai will give you as He has promised, you are to keep this ceremony. 26 Now when it happens that your children ask you, ‘What does this ceremony mean to you?’ 27 You are to say, ‘It is the sacrifice of Adonai’s Passover, because He passed over the houses of Bnei-Yisrael in Egypt, when He struck down the Egyptians, but spared our households.’” So the people bowed their heads and worshipped.

28 Then Bnei-Yisrael went and did it. They did just as Adonai had commanded Moses and Aaron. 29 So it came about at midnight that Adonai struck down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh sitting on his throne to the firstborn of the captive who was in the dungeon, and all the firstborn cattle.[i]

30 Then Pharaoh rose up in the night, he and all his servants and all the Egyptians, and there was loud wailing in Egypt. For there was not a house where someone was not dead. 31 So he called for Moses and Aaron at night and said, “Rise up, go out from my people, both you and Bnei-Yisrael, go, serve Adonai as you have said. 32 Take your flocks and your herds, as you said, and be gone! But bless me, too.”

33 Now the Egyptians urged the people, sending them out of the land quickly, for they thought, “We will all be dead!” 34 So the people took their dough before it was leavened, with their kneading bowls bound up in their clothes on their shoulders. 35 So Bnei-Yisrael acted according to the word of Moses. They asked the Egyptians for articles of silver and gold, and for clothing. 36 Adonai gave the people favor in the eyes of the Egyptians and let them have what they asked for. So they plundered the Egyptians.

37 Then Bnei-Yisrael journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about 600,000 men on foot, as well as children. 38 Also a mixed multitude went up with them, along with the flocks, herds and heavy livestock. 39 They had baked matzot cakes from the dough that they brought out of Egypt. It had no hametz, because they were thrust out of Egypt and could not delay, so they had not made provisions for themselves.

40 Now the time that Bnei-Yisrael lived in Egypt was 430 years. 41 So it happened at the end of 430 years, to the very day, that all the armies of Adonai went out from the land of Egypt. 42 It was a night of watching for Adonai to bring them out of the land of Egypt. This same night is a night of vigil for Adonai, for all Bnei-Yisrael throughout their generations.

43 Then Adonai said to Moses and Aaron, “This is the ordinance of the Passover. No foreigner may eat it, 44 but every man’s servant that is bought for money, after you have circumcised him, may eat it. 45 Nor should a visitor or hired servant eat it. 46 It is to be eaten inside a single house. You are not to carry the meat out of the house, nor are you to break any of its bones. [j] 47 All the congregation of Israel must keep it. 48 But if an outsider dwells with you, who would keep the Passover for Adonai, all his males must be circumcised. Then let him draw near and keep it. He will be like one who is native to the land. But no uncircumcised person may eat from it. 49 The same Torah applies to the native as well as the outsider who dwells among you.”

50 So all Bnei-Yisrael did so. They did just as Adonai commanded Moses and Aaron. 51 It was on that very day that Adonai brought Bnei-Yisrael out of the land of Egypt as armies.

Redemption of the Firstborn

13 Adonai spoke to Moses saying, “Consecrate to Me all the firstborn, from every womb of Bnei-Yisrael, both men and animals—this is Mine.”[k]

Moses said to the people, “Remember this day, on which you came out from Egypt, out of the house of bondage. For by a strong hand Adonai brought you out from this place. No hametz may be eaten. This day, in the month of Aviv, you are going out. When Adonai brings you into the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Hivites and the Jebusites, which He swore to your fathers to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey, you are to observe this service during this month. For seven days you are to eat matzah, and the seventh day is to be a feast to Adonai. Matzot is to be eaten throughout the seven days, and no hametz is to be seen among you, nor within any of your borders.

“You are to tell your son on that day saying, ‘It is because of what Adonai did for me when I came out of Egypt. So it will be like a sign on your hand and a reminder between your eyes, so that the Torah of Adonai may be in your mouth. For with a strong hand Adonai has brought you out of Egypt. 10 You are to keep this ordinance as a moed from year to year.

11 “Now when Adonai brings you into the land of the Canaanite, as He swore to you and your fathers and gives it you, 12 you are to set apart to Adonai every firstborn from the womb, and every firstborn male animal you have will be Adonai’s. 13 Every firstborn donkey you are to redeem with a lamb, and if you do not redeem it, then you are to break its neck. But you are to redeem every firstborn male among your sons.

14 “So when your son asks you in times to come, ‘What is this?’ say to him, ‘By a strong hand Adonai brought us out from Egypt, the house of bondage, 15 and when Pharaoh refused to let us go, Adonai slew all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both men and animals. So I sacrifice to Adonai all firstborn males, but I redeem the firstborn of my sons.’ 16 So it will be like a sign on your hand and like frontlets between your eyes, for by a strong hand Adonai brought us out of Egypt.”

13 This is the [a]message which the Lord spoke to Jeremiah the prophet about the (A)coming of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to (B)smite the land of Egypt:

14 “Declare in Egypt and proclaim in (C)Migdol,
Proclaim also in Memphis and (D)Tahpanhes;
Say, ‘Take your stand and get yourself ready,
For the (E)sword has devoured those around you.’
15 “Why have your (F)mighty ones become prostrate?
They do not stand because the Lord has (G)thrust them down.
16 “They have repeatedly (H)stumbled;
Indeed, they have fallen one against another.
Then they said, ‘Get up! And (I)let us go back
To our own people and our native land
Away from the [b](J)sword of the oppressor.’
17 [c]They cried there, ‘Pharaoh king of Egypt is but (K)a big noise;
He has let the appointed time pass by!’
18 “As I live,” declares the (L)King
Whose name is the Lord of hosts,
“Surely one shall come who looms up like (M)Tabor among the mountains,
Or like (N)Carmel by the sea.
19 “Make your baggage ready for (O)exile,
O (P)daughter dwelling in Egypt,
For (Q)Memphis will become a desolation;
It will even be burned down and [d]bereft of inhabitants.
20 “Egypt is a pretty (R)heifer,
But a [e]horsefly is coming (S)from the north—it is coming!
21 “Also her (T)mercenaries in her midst
Are like [f]fattened (U)calves,
For even they too have turned back and have fled away together;
They did not stand their ground.
For the day of their calamity has come upon them,
The time of their (V)punishment.
22 “Its sound moves along like a serpent;
For they move on [g]like an army
And come to her as woodcutters with axes.
23 “They have cut down her (W)forest,” declares the Lord;
“Surely it will no more be found,
Even though [h]they are now more numerous than (X)locusts
And are without number.
24 “The daughter of Egypt has been put to shame,
Given over to the [i]power of the (Y)people of the north.”

25 The Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, says, “Behold, I am going to punish Amon of (Z)Thebes, and (AA)Pharaoh, and Egypt along with her (AB)gods and her kings, even Pharaoh and those who (AC)trust in him. 26 I shall give them over to the [j]power of those who are (AD)seeking their lives, even into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and into the hand of his [k]officers. (AE)Afterwards, however, it will be inhabited as in the days of old,” declares the Lord.

27 “But as for you, O Jacob My servant, (AF)do not fear,
Nor be dismayed, O Israel!
For, see, I am going to (AG)save you from afar,
And your descendants from the land of their captivity;
And Jacob will return and be (AH)undisturbed
And secure, with no one making him tremble.
28 “O Jacob My servant, do not fear,” declares the Lord,
“For (AI)I am with you.
For I will make a full end of all the nations
Where I have driven you,
Yet I will (AJ)not make a full end of you;
But I will (AK)correct you properly
And by no means leave you unpunished.”

13 The word that Adonai spoke to Jeremiah the prophet about the coming of King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon to strike the land of Egypt:

14 “Declare it in Egypt, proclaim in Migdol,
and announce in Noph and Tahpanhes.
Say: ‘Stand up and get ready!
For the sword has devoured all around you.
15 Why are your strong ones swept away?
They did not stand up,
because Adonai thrust him down.
16 They keep stumbling,
yes, falling over each other.
Then they said: ‘Get up!
Let’s return to our own people,
to the land of our birth,
away from the oppressor’s sword.’
17 They cried there:
‘Pharaoh king of Egypt is but a noise!
He let the opportune time pass.’
18 As I live,” declares the King
—whose Name is Adonai-Tzva’ot
“like Tabor among the mountains,
or like Carmel by the sea,
so surely he will come.”
19 O daughter dwelling in Egypt,
get your bags ready for exile!
For Noph will become a ruin
laid waste, uninhabited.
20 Egypt is a beautiful heifer—
but a biting fly is coming—
from the north it is coming!
21 Even her mercenaries among her
are like stall-fed calves,
for they also will turn back—
they will flee away together,
they will not stand up—
for the day of their calamity has come upon them,
the time of their visitation.
22 Its sound will hiss like a snake,
as they march with an army,
and come against her as woodcutters with axes.
23 They cut down her forest”
—it is a declaration of Adonai
“though it was impenetrable,
for they are worse than the locust
—they are without number.
24 The daughter of Egypt is disgraced,
handed over to people of the north.”

25 Adonai-Tzva’ot, the God of Israel, says: “Behold, I will punish Amon of No, Pharaoh, Egypt, with her gods and her kings—even Pharaoh, and them that trust in him. 26 I will hand them over to those seeking their lives, into the hand of King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and his servants. Yet afterwards it will be inhabited, as in the days of old.” It is a declaration of Adonai.

27 “But you, fear not, Jacob My servant,
nor be dismayed, O Israel.
For behold, I will save you from afar,
your offspring from the land of their exile.
And Jacob will return and be at peace and secure,
no one frightening him.
28 Fear not, Jacob My servant”
—it is a declaration of Adonai
“for I am with you.
I will make a full end of all the nations
where I have driven you,
but I will not make a full end of you.
I will discipline you with justice,
but will not utterly destroy you.”

14 (A)What shall we say then? (B)There is no injustice with God, is there? (C)May it never be! 15 For He says to Moses, “(D)I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” 16 So then it does not depend on the man who wills or the man who (E)runs, but on (F)God who has mercy. 17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, “(G)For this very purpose I raised you up, to demonstrate My power in you, and that My name might be proclaimed [a]throughout the whole earth.” 18 So then He has mercy on whom He desires, and He (H)hardens whom He desires.

19 (I)You will say to me then, “(J)Why does He still find fault? For (K)who resists His will?” 20 On the contrary, who are you, (L)O man, who (M)answers back to God? (N)The thing molded will not say to the molder, “Why did you make me like this,” will it? 21 Or does not the potter have a right over the clay, to make from the same lump one vessel [b]for honorable use and another [c]for common use? 22 [d]What if God, although willing to demonstrate His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much (O)patience vessels of wrath (P)prepared for destruction? 23 And He did so to make known (Q)the riches of His glory upon (R)vessels of mercy, which He (S)prepared beforehand for glory, 24 even us, whom He also (T)called, (U)not from among Jews only, but also from among Gentiles. 25 As He says also in Hosea,

(V)I will call those who were not My people, ‘My people,’
And her who was not beloved, ‘beloved.’”
26 (W)And it shall be that in the place where it was said to them, ‘you are not My people,’
There they shall be called sons of (X)the living God.”

27 Isaiah cries out concerning Israel, “(Y)Though the number of the sons of Israel be (Z)like the sand of the sea, it is (AA)the remnant that will be saved; 28 (AB)for the Lord will execute His word on the earth, [e]thoroughly and [f]quickly.” 29 And just as Isaiah foretold,

(AC)Unless (AD)the Lord of [g]Sabaoth had left to us a [h]posterity,
(AE)We would have become like Sodom, and would have [i]resembled Gomorrah.”

14 What shall we say then? There is no injustice with God, is there? May it never be! 15 For to Moses He says,

“I will have mercy on whom I have mercy,

and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”[a]

16 So then it does not depend on the one who wills or the one who strives, but on God who shows mercy. 17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, “For this very purpose I raised you up—to demonstrate My power in you, so My name might be proclaimed in all the earth.” [b] 18 So then He has mercy on whom He wills, and He hardens whom He wills.

19 You will say to me then, “Why does He still find fault? For who has resisted His will?” 20 But who in the world are you, O man, who talks back to God? Will what is formed say to the one who formed it, “Why did you make me like this?” [c] 21 Does the potter have no right over the clay, to make from the same lump one vessel for honor and another for common use? 22 Now what if God, willing to demonstrate His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much patience vessels of wrath designed for destruction? 23 And what if He did so to make known the riches of His glory on vessels of mercy, which He prepared beforehand for glory?

24 Even us He called—not only from the Jewish people, but also from the Gentiles— 25 as He says also in Hosea,

“I will call those who were not My people,
    ‘My people,’
and her who was not loved,
    ‘Beloved.’
26 And it shall be that in the place where it was said to them,
    ‘You are not My people,’
there they shall be called sons of the living God.”[d]

27 Isaiah cries out concerning Israel,

“Though the number of B’nei-Israel be as the sand of the sea,
only the remnant shall be saved.
28 For Adonai will carry out His word upon the earth,
bringing it to an end and finishing quickly.”[e]

29 And just as Isaiah foretold,

“Unless Adonai-Tzva’ot had left us seed,
we would have become like Sodom and
    resembled Gomorrah.”[f]
