Folk som blev kvar i landet

3 Dessa var de folk som Herren lät bli kvar för att med dem sätta alla de israeliter på prov som inte hade varit med om alla krigen i Kanaan, 2 detta för att han skulle lära Israels barn att föra krig, men bara dem som förut inte hade varit med om sådana: 3 filisteernas fem furstar och alla kananeer och sidonier samt de hiveer som bodde i Libanons bergsbygd, från berget Baal-Hermon ända till sista vägstycket mot Hamat. 4 Med dessa ville Herren sätta Israel på prov för att få veta om de ville följa de bud som han hade givit deras fäder genom Mose.

5 Så bodde Israels barn bland kananeerna, hetiterna, amoreerna, perisseerna, hiveerna och jebusiterna, 6 och de tog deras döttrar till hustrur och gav sina döttrar åt deras söner och tjänade deras gudar.

Otniel

7 Israel gjorde det som var ont i Herrens ögon. De glömde Herren, sin Gud, och tjänade baalerna och aserorna. 8 Då upptändes Herrens vrede mot Israel, och han sålde dem i Kusan-Risatajims hand, kungen i Aram-Naharajim. Och Israels barn tjänade Kusan-Risatajim i åtta år. 9 Men Israels barn ropade till Herren, och Herren lät då en frälsare uppstå bland dem som räddade dem, nämligen Otniel, son till Kenas, Kalebs yngre bror. 10 Herrens Ande kom över honom, och han blev domare i Israel. När han drog ut i strid, gav Herren Kusan-Risatajim, kungen i Aram, i hans hand så att han blev Kusan-Risatajim övermäktig. 11 Sedan hade landet ro i fyrtio år. Därefter dog Otniel, Kenas son.

Ehud

12 Men Israels barn gjorde åter det som var ont i Herrens ögon. Herren gav då Eglon, kungen i Moab, makt över Israel, eftersom de gjorde det som var ont i Herrens ögon. 13 Eglon förenade sig med Ammons barn och Amalek. Han drog ut och slog Israel, och de intog Palmstaden. 14 Och Israels barn tjänade Eglon, kungen i Moab, i arton år.

15 Men Israel ropade till Herren, och Herren lät en frälsare uppstå bland dem, benjaminiten Ehud, Geras son, en vänsterhänt man. När Israels barn sände honom med gåvor till Eglon, kungen i Moab, 16 gjorde Ehud ett tveeggat svärd åt sig, en fot långt. Detta band han fast under sina kläder vid sin högra höft. 17 Han överlämnade gåvorna till Eglon, kungen i Moab. Denne var en mycket fet man. 18 När han hade överlämnat gåvorna, sände han i väg folket som hade burit dem. 19 Själv vände han tillbaka vid bildstoderna nära Gilgal och sade: "Jag har ett hemligt ärende till dig, o konung." Kungen sade: "Var tysta!" Alla som stod omkring honom gick ut därifrån.

20 Ehud gick fram till honom, där han satt i sommarsalen som han hade för sig själv och Ehud sade: "Jag har ett ord från Gud till dig." När kungen reste sig från sin stol, 21 räckte Ehud ut sin vänstra hand, tog svärdet från sin högra höft och stötte det i hans buk, 22 så att fästet följde med in efter klingan, och klingan omslöts av fettet, ty han drog inte ut svärdet ur hans buk. Sedan gick Ehud ut i försalen, 23 och då han hade kommit dit, stängde han igen dörrarna till salen efter sig och låste dem.

24 När han hade gått kom Eglons tjänare och såg att dörrarna till salen var låsta. De tänkte: "Han har helt säkert något privat bestyr i sin sommarkammare." 25 Men sedan de hade väntat länge och han ändå inte öppnade dörrarna till salen, tog de nyckeln och öppnade själva, och se, där låg deras herre död på golvet.

26 Medan de dröjde hade Ehud flytt. Han hade hunnit förbi bildstoderna och flydde till Seira. 27 Så snart han kom dit, lät han stöta i hornet i Efraims bergsbygd. Då drog Israels barn ner från bergsbygden med honom i spetsen. 28 Han sade till dem: "Följ mig, för Herren har gett era fiender moabiterna i er hand." Då följde de honom och intog vadställena över Jordan till Moabs land och lät ingen komma över. 29 Vid detta tillfälle slog de omkring tiotusen moabiter, alla starka och tappra män. Inte en enda kom undan. 30 På den dagen blev Moab kuvat under Israels hand, och landet hade ro i åttio år.

Samgar

31 Efter Ehud kom Samgar, Anats son. Han slog filisteerna, sexhundra man, med en oxpik. Också han räddade Israel.

1-3 Här följer en förteckning över de folk som Herren lämnade kvar i landet för att pröva den nya generationen i Israel, som inte varit med om krigen i Kanaan. Gud ville ge de unga i Israel tillfälle att lära sig både tro och lydnad genom att besegra sina fiender:Filisteerna med sina fem städer, kananeerna, sidonierna och hiveerna, som bodde i Libanons bergsbygd från Baal-Hermon till Hamat.

4 Dessa folk fanns kvar, för att Herren skulle kunna sätta den nya generationen i Israel på prov. Han ville se om den skulle lyda de befallningar som Herren hade gett deras förfäder genom Mose.

Otniel, den förste domaren

5 Israels barn bodde därför bland kananeerna, hetiterna, amoreerna, perisseerna, hiveerna och jebuseerna.

6 De unga männen i Israel tog deras unga kvinnor till hustrur, och flickorna i Israel gifte sig med deras unga män. Snart började Israel också att tillbe deras avgudar.

7 Israels barn var alltså mycket olydiga i Guds ögon. De glömde Herren, sin Gud, och tillbad avgudar som Baalerna och Aserorna.

8 Herrens vrede riktades därför mot Israel, och han lät kung Kusan-Risataim från östra Syrien besegra dem. I åtta år fick de vara slavar under hans välde,

9 men när folket ropade till Herren, utsåg han Kalebs brorson Otniel, son till Kenas, Kalebs yngre bror, att rädda dem.

10 Herrens Ande kom över Otniel. Han blev Israels domare, och Herren hjälpte Israel att fullständigt besegra sin fiende, med Otniel som anförare mot kung Kusan-Risataims armé.

11 Sedan blev det fred i landet i fyrtio år, ända tills Otniel dog.

12 När Israel på nytt började med sin syndfulla avgudadyrkan, lät Gud kung Eglon i Moab ta makten över landet.

13 Denne allierade sig med ammoniterna och amalekiterna, och de besegrade Israel och intog Jeriko, Palmstaden.

14 Under arton år tvingades Israels folk att betala skatt till kung Eglon.

Ehud

15 Men när israeliterna i sin nöd ropade till Herren, sände han dem en befriare, den vänsterhänte Ehud, en benjaminit som var son till Gera och som hade utsetts att resa till kung Eglon med Israels skatt.

16 Innan han gav sig iväg på sin resa tillverkade han en tveeggad dolk, som var en halv meter lång, och som han kunde binda fast vid högra låret under sina kläder.

17-19 När han hade överlämnat pengarna till kung Eglon, en mycket tjock man, vände han hem igen. Men utanför staden, vid stenbrotten vid Gilgal, lät han de övriga i sällskapet fortsätta medan han själv vände tillbaka till kungen.Jag har ett hemligt budskap till dig, sa han till kungen. Kungen skickade då genast ut de övriga ur det svala rummet i övre våningen i hans sommarpalats.

20 Ehud närmade sig försiktigt kungen och viskade till honom: Jag har ett budskap från Gud!Kung Eglon blev ivrig och reste sig upp för att lyssna.

21 Då grep Ehud med sin vänstra hand dolken som han hade vid sitt högra lår och körde den så djupt in i kungens buk

22-23 att klingan kom ut på andra sidan och skaftet försvann och doldes helt av fettet. Ehud lät dolken sitta kvar, skyndade sig ut, låste dörren efter sig och flydde sedan genom övre porten.

24 När kungens tjänare kom tillbaka och såg att dörrarna var låsta, vågade de inte annat än att vänta utanför och tänkte: Han är nog på toaletten längre in i huset.

25 Men när han inte kommit ut efter en lång stund blev de oroliga och skaffade fram en nyckel. När de öppnade dörren och steg in i rummet fann de kungen död på golvet.

26 Under tiden hade Ehud hunnit undan. Han tog sig förbi avgudarna och flydde till Seira.

27 När han kom fram till Efraims bergsbygd blåste han till samling och mönstrade en armé, som han ställde sig i spetsen för.

28 Följ mig! ropade han till dem. Herren ska låta oss segra över moabiterna, våra fiender.Soldaterna drog fram till floden Jordan och besatte alla vadställen, så att inga fiender kunde ta sig över.

29 Sedan anföll de moabiterna och dödade omkring 10.000 av deras bästa soldater och lät ingen av dem fly.

30 Den dagen blev Moab besegrat av Israel, som sedan hade fred under åttio år.

Samgar

31 Domaren som efterträdde Ehud hette Samgar och var son till Anat. Det var Samgar som dödade 600 filisteer med en oxpik och den gången räddade Israel från undergång.

Yahweh Tests Israel

3 (A)Now these are the nations which Yahweh allowed to remain, to test Israel by them (that is, all who had not known any of the wars of Canaan; 2 [a]however, God tested them in order that the generations of the sons of Israel would know war, by learning war, [b]especially those who had not known it formerly). 3 These nations are: the five lords of the Philistines and all the Canaanites and the Sidonians and (B)the Hivites who lived in Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal-hermon as far as [c]Lebo-hamath. 4 And they were for [d](C)testing Israel, to know if they would [e]obey the commandments of Yahweh, which He had commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses. 5 (D)Now the sons of Israel lived among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; 6 and (E)they took their daughters for themselves as wives and gave their own daughters to their sons and served their gods.

Yahweh Raises Up Othniel

7 Thus the sons of Israel did (F)what was evil in the eyes of Yahweh and (G)forgot Yahweh their God and (H)served the Baals and the [f]Asheroth. 8 Then the anger of Yahweh burned against Israel, so that He sold them into the hands of Cushan-rishathaim king of [g]Mesopotamia; and the sons of Israel served Cushan-rishathaim eight years. 9 Then the sons of Israel cried to Yahweh, and Yahweh raised up a savior for the sons of Israel to save them, (I)Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother. 10 (J)And the Spirit of Yahweh came upon him, and he judged Israel. And he went out to war, and Yahweh gave Cushan-rishathaim king of [h]Mesopotamia into his hand. So his hand was strong against Cushan-rishathaim. 11 Then the land was quiet for forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.

12 Then the sons of Israel again (K)did what was evil in the eyes of Yahweh. So (L)Yahweh strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel because they had done what was evil in the eyes of Yahweh. 13 And he gathered to himself the sons of Ammon and Amalek; and he went and struck Israel, and they possessed (M)the city of the palm trees. 14 So the sons of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.

Yahweh Raises Up Ehud and Shamgar

15 Then the sons of Israel (N)cried to Yahweh, and Yahweh raised up a savior for them, Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a left-handed man. And the sons of Israel sent tribute by his hand to Eglon the king of Moab. 16 And Ehud made himself a sword which had two edges, a [i]cubit in length, and he bound it on his right thigh under his cloak. 17 Then he brought the tribute near to Eglon king of Moab. Now Eglon was a very fat man. 18 And it happened when he had finished bringing the tribute near, that he sent away the people who had carried the tribute. 19 But he himself turned back from the graven images which were at Gilgal and said, “I have a secret message for you, O king.” And he said, “Keep silence.” And all who stood by him left him. 20 But Ehud came to him while he was sitting alone in his cool roof chamber. And Ehud said, “I have a message from God for you.” And he arose from his seat. 21 Then Ehud sent forth his left hand, took the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly. 22 The handle also went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, for he did not draw the sword out of his belly; and the refuse came out. 23 Then Ehud went out into the vestibule and shut the doors of the roof chamber behind him and locked them.

24 Now he went out, and his servants came in and looked, and behold, the doors of the roof chamber were locked; and they said, “(O)He is surely [j]relieving himself in the cool room.” 25 Then they waited until they were ashamed; but behold, he did not open the doors of the roof chamber. Therefore they took the key and opened them, and behold, their master had fallen to the [k]floor dead.

26 Now Ehud escaped while they were delaying, and he passed by the graven images and escaped to Seirah. 27 And it happened when he had arrived, that (P)he blew the trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim; and the sons of Israel went down with him from the hill country, and he was in front of them. 28 Then he said to them, “Pursue them, for Yahweh has given your enemies the Moabites into your hands.” So they went down after him and captured (Q)the fords of the Jordan opposite Moab and did not allow anyone to cross. 29 And they struck down at that time about 10,000 Moabites, all robust and valiant men; and no one escaped. 30 So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land was quiet for eighty years.

31 Now after him was (R)Shamgar the son of Anath. And he struck down 600 Philistines with an oxgoad; and he also saved Israel.

3 These are the nations the Lord left to test(A) all those Israelites who had not experienced any of the wars in Canaan 2 (he did this only to teach warfare to the descendants of the Israelites who had not had previous battle experience): 3 the five(B) rulers of the Philistines,(C) all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites(D) living in the Lebanon mountains from Mount Baal Hermon(E) to Lebo Hamath.(F) 4 They were left to test(G) the Israelites to see whether they would obey the Lord’s commands, which he had given their ancestors through Moses.

5 The Israelites lived(H) among the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites,(I) Hivites and Jebusites.(J) 6 They took their daughters(K) in marriage and gave their own daughters to their sons, and served their gods.(L)

Othniel

7 The Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord; they forgot the Lord(M) their God and served the Baals and the Asherahs.(N) 8 The anger of the Lord burned against Israel so that he sold(O) them into the hands of Cushan-Rishathaim(P) king of Aram Naharaim,[a](Q) to whom the Israelites were subject for eight years. 9 But when they cried out(R) to the Lord, he raised up for them a deliverer,(S) Othniel(T) son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, who saved them. 10 The Spirit of the Lord came on him,(U) so that he became Israel’s judge[b] and went to war. The Lord gave Cushan-Rishathaim(V) king of Aram(W) into the hands of Othniel, who overpowered him. 11 So the land had peace(X) for forty years,(Y) until Othniel son of Kenaz(Z) died.

Ehud

12 Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord,(AA) and because they did this evil the Lord gave Eglon king of Moab(AB) power over Israel. 13 Getting the Ammonites(AC) and Amalekites(AD) to join him, Eglon came and attacked Israel, and they took possession of the City of Palms.[c](AE) 14 The Israelites were subject to Eglon king of Moab(AF) for eighteen years.

15 Again the Israelites cried out to the Lord, and he gave them a deliverer(AG)—Ehud(AH), a left-handed(AI) man, the son of Gera the Benjamite. The Israelites sent him with tribute(AJ) to Eglon king of Moab. 16 Now Ehud(AK) had made a double-edged sword about a cubit[d] long, which he strapped to his right thigh under his clothing. 17 He presented the tribute(AL) to Eglon king of Moab, who was a very fat man.(AM) 18 After Ehud had presented the tribute, he sent on their way those who had carried it. 19 But on reaching the stone images near Gilgal he himself went back to Eglon and said, “Your Majesty, I have a secret message for you.”

The king said to his attendants, “Leave us!” And they all left.

20 Ehud then approached him while he was sitting alone in the upper room of his palace[e](AN) and said, “I have a message from God for you.” As the king rose(AO) from his seat, 21 Ehud reached with his left hand, drew the sword(AP) from his right thigh and plunged it into the king’s belly. 22 Even the handle sank in after the blade, and his bowels discharged. Ehud did not pull the sword out, and the fat closed in over it. 23 Then Ehud went out to the porch[f]; he shut the doors of the upper room behind him and locked them.

24 After he had gone, the servants came and found the doors of the upper room locked. They said, “He must be relieving himself(AQ) in the inner room of the palace.” 25 They waited to the point of embarrassment,(AR) but when he did not open the doors of the room, they took a key and unlocked them. There they saw their lord fallen to the floor, dead.

26 While they waited, Ehud got away. He passed by the stone images and escaped to Seirah. 27 When he arrived there, he blew a trumpet(AS) in the hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites went down with him from the hills, with him leading them.

28 “Follow me,” he ordered, “for the Lord has given Moab,(AT) your enemy, into your hands.(AU)” So they followed him down and took possession of the fords of the Jordan(AV) that led to Moab; they allowed no one to cross over. 29 At that time they struck down about ten thousand Moabites, all vigorous and strong; not one escaped. 30 That day Moab(AW) was made subject to Israel, and the land had peace(AX) for eighty years.

Shamgar

31 After Ehud came Shamgar son of Anath,(AY) who struck down six hundred(AZ) Philistines(BA) with an oxgoad. He too saved Israel.
