Chapter 9
Let the Offering Be Ready. 1 In regard to the ministry toward the saints, there really is no necessity for me to write to you. 2 For I am fully aware of your eagerness to help, which has been the subject of my boasting about you to the Macedonians, telling them that Achaia has been ready since last year. Your ardor has excited most of them.
3 Nevertheless, I am sending the brethren to ensure that our boasts about you may not seem to have been offered in vain. I want you to be as prepared as I said you would be. 4 For if I bring some Macedonians with me and they come to the realization that you are not prepared, it would be a source of shame to us—to say nothing of you—because of our confidence in you. 5 Therefore, I thought it necessary to encourage the brethren to go on to you ahead of us and arrange in advance for the gift that you have promised, so that it may be ready as a genuine gift and not as something that has been granted grudgingly.
God Loves a Cheerful Giver. 6 Remember this: if you sow sparingly, you will reap sparingly, and if you sow generously, you will reap generously as well. 7 Each person should give as much as he has decided in his heart, not with reluctance or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to enrich you with an abundance of every grace, so that, with all of your needs provided for, you may be able to produce a surplus of good works. 9 As it is written,
“He scatters abroad his gifts to the poor;
his righteousness lasts forever.”
10 Generosity Will Prompt Thanksgiving. The one who provides seed for sowing and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed and increase the harvest of your righteousness. 11 Enriched in every way, you will be able to practice all your acts of generosity, which, through our intervention, will result in thanksgiving to God.
12 The administering of this public service not only helps to satisfy the needs of the saints but also overflows in countless acts of thanksgiving to God. 13 Through the evidence of such service, you are giving glory to God for your obedient profession of the gospel of Christ and the generosity of your contribution to them and to all others as well. 14 At the same time, their hearts will go out to you in their prayers for you, because of the surpassing grace that God has bestowed upon you. 15 Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift.[a]

Motivations for Giving
9 Now concerning the ministry to the saints, it is unnecessary for me to write to you. 2 For I know your eagerness, and I brag about you to the Macedonians:[a](A) “Achaia[b](B) has been prepared since last year,” and your zeal(C) has stirred up most of them.(D) 3 But I sent the brothers so our boasting about you in the matter would not prove empty, and so you would be prepared just as I said. 4 For if any Macedonians come with me and find you unprepared, we, not to mention you, would be embarrassed in that situation.[c] 5 Therefore I considered it necessary to urge the brothers to go on ahead to you and arrange in advance the generous gift(E) you promised, so that it will be ready as a gift and not as an extortion.(F)
6 Remember this:[d] The person who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the person who sows generously will also reap generously. 7 Each person should do as he has decided in his heart—not reluctantly or out of necessity, for God loves(G) a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able(H) to make every grace overflow to you, so that in every way, always having everything you need, you may excel in every good work. 9 As it is written:
10 Now the One who provides seed for the sower and bread for food will provide and multiply your seed and increase the harvest of your righteousness.(K) 11 You will be enriched(L) in every way for all generosity, which produces thanksgiving to God through us. 12 For the ministry of this service(M) is not only supplying the needs of the saints, but is also overflowing in many acts of thanksgiving to God. 13 They will glorify God for your obedience to the confession of[f] the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity(N) in sharing with them and with others through the proof provided by this service. 14 And they will have deep affection for[g] you in their prayers on your behalf because of the surpassing grace of God in you. 15 Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift.

9 Còn về việc cứu trợ các thánh đồ thì tôi không cần phải viết cho anh chị em nữa. 2 Vì tôi biết nhiệt tâm của anh chị em như tôi vẫn khoe với các tín hữu ở Ma-xê-đoan rằng anh chị em tại A-chai đã chuẩn bị từ năm ngoái và lòng hăng hái của anh chị em đã khích động rất nhiều anh chị em khác. 3 Nhưng tôi đã gửi mấy anh em này đến để những lời chúng tôi khen ngợi anh chị em trong vấn đề này không phải là những lời khen rỗng tuếch và để anh chị em chuẩn bị sẵn sàng như tôi đã nói. 4 Kẻo khi các anh em từ Ma-xê-đoan cùng tôi đến lại thấy anh chị em chưa sẵn sàng thì chúng tôi, ấy là chưa kể đến anh chị em nữa, đều sẽ bị hổ thẹn vì tôi đã tín nhiệm anh chị em. 5 Vì vậy, tôi nghĩ cần phải nhờ các anh em kia đến với anh chị em trước chúng tôi để chuẩn bị sẵn sàng công việc từ thiện mà anh chị em đã hứa. Như thế món quà lạc quyên sẽ sẵn sàng do từ tâm chứ không phải bị ép buộc.
6 Anh chị em nên nhớ điều này, hễ ai gieo ít thì gặt ít, ai gieo nhiều thì gặt nhiều. 7 Mỗi người nên quyên giúp tùy lòng đã định, không phải vì miễn cưỡng hay bị ép buộc. Vì Đức Chúa Trời yêu người hiến tặng một cách vui lòng. 8 Đức Chúa Trời có thể ban cho anh chị em mọi ân phúc dồi dào để anh chị em luôn luôn được đầy đủ trong mọi sự lại còn dư dật để làm mọi việc lành, 9 như Kinh Thánh chép:
“Ngài đã ban phát rộng rãi,
Ngài ban cho kẻ nghèo khó.
Sự công chính của Ngài tồn tại đời đời.”[a]
10 Đấng đã cung cấp hạt giống dồi dào cho người gieo và bánh làm thực phẩm, cũng sẽ cung cấp và gia tăng hạt giống của anh chị em. Ngài cũng sẽ làm cho hoa quả công chính của anh chị em sinh sôi nẩy nở thêm nhiều. 11 Anh chị em được giàu có về mọi mặt để làm mọi việc từ thiện rộng rãi qua chúng tôi, nhờ thế mà nhiều người tạ ơn Đức Chúa Trời.
12 Vì công cuộc cứu trợ này không những đáp ứng sự thiếu thốn của các thánh đồ nhưng cũng đem lại nhiều lời cảm tạ Đức Chúa Trời. 13 Nhờ bằng chứng của công việc này, người ta tôn vinh Đức Chúa Trời vì anh chị em đã vâng phục trong việc xưng nhận Phúc Âm của Chúa Cứu Thế và trong việc rộng lượng chia sẻ với họ cũng như với tất cả mọi người. 14 Và trong khi mong chờ anh chị em họ sẽ cầu nguyện cho anh chị em vì ân sủng tuyệt hảo Đức Chúa Trời đã ban cho anh chị em. 15 Cảm tạ Đức Chúa Trời vì tặng phẩm không sao tả xiết của Ngài.
