Mang Rương Giao Ước trở về

13 Đa-vít nói chuyện với các sĩ quan trong quân lực mình, các viên chỉ huy một trăm và một ngàn quân. 2 Rồi Đa-vít gọi cả dân Ít-ra-en lại bảo rằng, “Nếu các ngươi cho rằng đây là ý hay và rằng đây là điều CHÚA và Thượng Đế chúng ta muốn thì hãy thông báo. Hãy mời mọi người trong toàn cõi Ít-ra-en cùng các thầy tế lễ và người Lê-vi sống trong các thị trấn và đồng cỏ đến nhập với chúng ta. 3 Hãy mang Rương của Thượng Đế về với chúng ta. Khi Sau-lơ còn làm vua, chúng ta không dùng Rương để cầu hỏi Thượng Đế.” 4 Toàn thể dân chúng đều đồng ý với Đa-vít vì mọi người cho rằng đó là việc nên làm.

5 Vậy Đa-vít triệu tập toàn dân Ít-ra-en lại từ sông Si-ho ở Ai-cập cho đến Lê-bo Ha-mát để rước Rương của Thượng Đế về từ thị trấn Ki-ri-át Giê-a-rim. 6 Đa-vít cùng toàn dân Ít-ra-en đi đến Ba-a-la thuộc Giu-đa, gọi là Ki-ri-át Giê-a-rim để mang Rương Giao Ước của Thượng Đế về. Ngôi của Ngài nằm giữa hai con thú có cánh bằng vàng trên nắp Rương, và Rương được gọi bằng danh Ngài.

7 Dân chúng mang Rương của Thượng Đế từ nhà A-bi-na-đáp để trên một cái xe kéo mới có U-xa và A-hi-ô hướng dẫn.

8 Đa-vít cùng toàn dân Ít-ra-en hân hoan reo mừng trước mặt Thượng Đế. Họ hăng say ca hát, khảy đờn sắt, đờn cầm, đánh trống cơm, chập chỏa và thổi kèn.

9 Khi những người của Đa-vít đến sân đập lúa của Ki-đôn thì mấy con bò kéo xe bị vấp nên U-xa giơ tay ra đỡ Rương. 10 CHÚA nổi giận cùng U-xa và giết ông vì dám đụng đến Rương. U-xa chết tại chỗ trước mặt Thượng Đế. 11 Đa-vít bất bình vì CHÚA nổi giận trừng phạt U-xa. Hiện nay chỗ đó gọi là Phê-rê U-xa [a].

12 Ngày đó Đa-vít sợ Thượng Đế nên hỏi, “Làm sao tôi mang Rương của Thượng Đế về cùng tôi được?” 13 Nên Đa-vít không mang Rương về với mình ở Giê-ru-sa-lem, mà cho mang về nhà Ô-bết Ê-đôm, người miền Gát. 14 Rương của Thượng Đế ở nhà Ô-bết Ê-đôm trong ba tháng. CHÚA ban phước cho gia đình Ô-bết Ê-đôm và mọi vật thuộc về ông.

Lãnh thổ của Đa-vít bành trướng

14 Hi-ram vua thành Tia sai sứ giả đến Đa-vít. Ông cũng gởi gỗ, thợ nề và thợ mộc đến xây cung điện cho Đa-vít. 2 Do đó Đa-vít đích xác rằng CHÚA đã cử mình làm vua trên Ít-ra-en và Ngài đã khiến vương quốc ông hùng cường. CHÚA làm điều đó vì Ngài yêu mến dân Ít-ra-en của Ngài.

3 Đa-vít cưới thêm vợ ở Giê-ru-sa-lem, có thêm con trai và con gái. 4 Sau đây là tên của các con sinh cho Đa-vít ở Giê-ru-sa-lem: Sam-mua, Sô-báp, Na-than, Sô-lô-môn, 5 Íp-ha, Ê-li-sua, Ên-phê-lết, 6 Nô-gát, Nê-phéc, Gia-phia, 7 Ê-li-sa-ma, Bê-ê-lia-đa, và Ê-li-phê-lết.

Đa-vít chiến thắng dân Phi-li-tin

8 Khi quân Phi-li-tin nghe Đa-vít đã được cử làm vua trên cả Ít-ra-en liền đi tìm ông. Nhưng Đa-vít nghe được liền kéo ra đánh họ. 9 Quân Phi-li-tin đã tấn công và cướp phá dân chúng trong thung lũng Rê-pha-im. 10 Đa-vít hỏi ý Thượng Đế, “Tôi có nên kéo lên đánh quân Phi-li-tin hay không? Ngài có trao họ vào tay tôi không?”

CHÚA đáp, “Hãy đi đánh. Ta sẽ trao chúng vào tay ngươi.”

11 Vậy Đa-vít cùng quân theo mình kéo lên thị trấn Ba-anh Phê-ra-xim [b] và đánh bại người Phi-li-tin. Đa-vít nói, “Thượng Đế đã dùng tôi phá đổ hàng rào đối phương như nước lụt.” Nên chỗ đó gọi là Ba-anh Phê-ra-xim. 12 Người Phi-li-tin chạy bỏ lại các thần tượng của chúng ở đó nên Đa-vít ra lệnh cho quân sĩ ông thiêu đốt hết.

Thêm một chiến thắng dân Phi-li-tin nữa

13 Ít lâu sau quân Phi-li-tin lại tấn công dân chúng trong thung lũng lần nữa. 14 Đa-vít lại cầu hỏi Thượng Đế và Ngài đáp, “Đừng tấn công dân Phi-li-tin vào thẳng mặt trước của chúng mà hãy đi vòng đánh chúng trước mặt các cây kim hương. 15 Khi ngươi nghe tiếng bước chân trên ngọn cây kim hương thì hãy tiến đánh. Ta sẽ đi trước ngươi để đánh bại quân Phi-li-tin.” 16 Đa-vít làm theo điều Thượng Đế truyền dặn. Ông và quân sĩ đánh bại người Phi-li-tin suốt từ Ghi-bê-ôn đến Ghê-xe. 17 Vậy danh tiếng Đa-vít đồn ra khắp các nước. CHÚA khiến mọi dân tộc đều kính sợ ông.

Đón rước Rương Giao Ước vào Giê-ru-sa-lem

15 Đa-vít cất nhiều nhà cho ông ở Giê-ru-sa-lem. Rồi ông chuẩn bị một nơi cho Rương của Thượng Đế, và dựng một lều cho Rương. 2 Đa-vít dặn, “Chỉ có người Lê-vi mới được phép khiêng Rương của Thượng Đế thôi. CHÚA đã chọn họ khiêng Rương Ngài và phục vụ Ngài đời đời.”

3 Đa-vít triệu tập toàn dân Ít-ra-en đến Giê-ru-sa-lem. Ông muốn mang Rương của CHÚA vào nơi ông đã chuẩn bị. 4 Đa-vít gọi tất cả con cháu A-rôn và người Lê-vi lại. 5 Trong họ hàng Cô-hát có một trăm hai mươi người, đứng đầu là U-ri-ên. 6 Có một trăm hai mươi người trong họ hàng Mê-ra-ri, đứng đầu là A-xai-gia. 7 Trong họ hàng Ghẹt-sôn có một trăm ba mươi người, đứng đầu là Giô-ên. 8 Có hai trăm người từ họ hàng Ê-li-xa-phan, đứng đầu là Sê-mai-gia. 9 Trong họ hàng Hếp-rôn có tám mươi người, đứng đầu là Ê-li-ên. 10 Và trong họ hàng U-xi-ên có một trăm mười hai người, đứng đầu là Am-mi-na-đáp.

Đa-vít nói chuyện với các thầy tế lễ và người Lê-vi

11 Rồi Đa-vít mời các thầy tế lễ Xa-đốc và A-bia-tha cùng những người Lê-vi sau đây đến: U-ri-ên, A-sai-gia, Giô-ên, Sê-mai-gia, Ê-li-ên, và Am-mi-na-đáp. 12 Đa-vít bảo họ, “Các anh em là gia trưởng của người Lê-vi. Các anh em và những người Lê-vi khác phải sẵn sàng phục vụ CHÚA [c]. Hãy mang Rương của CHÚA, Thượng Đế của Ít-ra-en, đến nơi ta đã chuẩn bị sẵn. 13 Lần trước chúng ta không hỏi ý CHÚA xem phải khiêng Rương của Ngài ra sao. Các ngươi là người Lê-vi không khiêng Rương đó cho nên CHÚA là Thượng Đế đã trừng phạt chúng ta.”

14 Sau đó các thầy tế lễ và người Lê-vi dọn mình sẵn sàng phục vụ CHÚA để có thể khiêng Rương của CHÚA, Thượng Đế của Ít-ra-en. 15 Người Lê-vi dùng các đòn đặc biệt để khiêng Rương của Thượng Đế lên vai theo như Mô-se truyền dặn, và theo như điều CHÚA dặn bảo.

Các ca sĩ

16 Đa-vít bảo các lãnh tụ người Lê-vi chỉ định các anh em mình vào nhiệm vụ ca hát, chơi đờn sắt, đờn cầm, trống cơm và hát những bài ca vui.

17 Người Lê-vi liền chỉ định Hê-man và các thân quyến ông như A-sáp và Ê-than. Hê-man là con trai Giô-ên. A-sáp là con trai Bê-rê-kia. Còn Ê-than, thuộc họ Mê-ra-ri, là con của Cu-sai-gia. 18 Ngoài ra cũng có toán người Lê-vi thứ nhì gồm: Xa-cha-ri, Gia-a-xi-ên, Sê-mi-ra-mốt, Giê-hi-ên, U-ni, Ê-li-áp, Bê-nai-gia, Ma-a-xê-gia, Mát-ti-thia, Ê-li-phê-lê-hu, Mích-nê-gia, Ô-bết Ê-đôm, và Giê-i-ên. Những người nầy thuộc toán phòng vệ người Lê-vi.

19 Các ca sĩ Hê-man, A-sáp, và Ê-than chơi trống cơm bằng đồng. 20 Xa-cha-ri, Gia-a-xi-ên, Sê-mi-ra-mốt, Giê-hi-ên, U-ni, Ê-li-áp, Ma-a-sê-gia, và Bê-nai-gia chơi đờn cầm [d] loại lớn. 21 Mát-ti-thia, Ê-li-phê-lê-hu, Mích-nê-gia, Ô-bết Ê-đôm, Giê-i-ên, và A-xa-xia chơi đờn sắt loại nhỏ. 22 Kê-na-nia, lãnh tụ người Lê-vi chịu trách nhiệm về việc xướng hát vì ông có tài trong việc đó.

23 Bê-rê-kia và Ên-ca-na là hai người canh gác Rương Giao Ước. 24 Các thầy tế lễ Sê-ba-nia, Giô-xa-phát, Nê-tha-nên, A-ma-xai, Xa-cha-ri, Bê-nai-gia, và Ê-li-ê-xe có nhiệm vụ thổi kèn trước Rương của Thượng Đế. Ô-bết Ê-đôm và Giê-hi-a cũng lo nhiệm vụ canh gác Rương.

25 Đa-vít, các lãnh tụ của Ít-ra-en, và những viên chỉ huy hàng ngàn quân [e] đi rước Rương Giao Ước của CHÚA. Họ hớn hở vô cùng khi đồng mang Rương từ nhà Ô-bết Ê-đôm về. 26 Vì Thượng Đế giúp đỡ những người Lê-vi khiêng Rương Giao Ước của CHÚA nên họ dâng bảy con bò đực và bảy con chiên đực. 27 Tất cả những người Lê-vi khiêng Rương, và Kê-na-nia, người lo việc xướng hát, và các ca sĩ đều mặc áo dài bằng vải gai mịn. Đa-vít cũng mặc một áo dài bằng vải gai mịn và một áo ngắn thánh cũng bằng vải gai mịn.

28 Vậy tất cả dân Ít-ra-en rước Rương Giao Ước của CHÚA. Họ reo hò, thổi tù và cùng với kèn, đánh trống cơm, đờn sắt, và đờn cầm.

29 Khi Rương Giao Ước của CHÚA đi vào Giê-ru-sa-lem thì Mi-canh, con gái Sau-lơ nhìn qua cửa sổ. Nàng thấy vua Đa-vít nhảy múa vui mừng thì đâm ra khinh dể ông.

Bringing Back the Ark(A)

13 David conferred with each of his officers, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds. 2 He then said to the whole assembly of Israel, “If it seems good to you and if it is the will of the Lord our God, let us send word far and wide to the rest of our people throughout the territories of Israel, and also to the priests and Levites who are with them in their towns and pasturelands, to come and join us. 3 Let us bring the ark of our God back to us,(B) for we did not inquire(C) of[a] it[b] during the reign of Saul.” 4 The whole assembly agreed to do this, because it seemed right to all the people.

5 So David assembled all Israel,(D) from the Shihor River(E) in Egypt to Lebo Hamath,(F) to bring the ark of God from Kiriath Jearim.(G) 6 David and all Israel went to Baalah(H) of Judah (Kiriath Jearim) to bring up from there the ark of God the Lord, who is enthroned between the cherubim(I)—the ark that is called by the Name.

7 They moved the ark of God from Abinadab’s(J) house on a new cart, with Uzzah and Ahio guiding it. 8 David and all the Israelites were celebrating with all their might before God, with songs and with harps, lyres, timbrels, cymbals and trumpets.(K)

9 When they came to the threshing floor of Kidon, Uzzah reached out his hand to steady the ark, because the oxen stumbled. 10 The Lord’s anger(L) burned against Uzzah, and he struck him down(M) because he had put his hand on the ark. So he died there before God.

11 Then David was angry because the Lord’s wrath had broken out against Uzzah, and to this day that place is called Perez Uzzah.[c](N)

12 David was afraid of God that day and asked, “How can I ever bring the ark of God to me?” 13 He did not take the ark to be with him in the City of David. Instead, he took it to the house of Obed-Edom(O) the Gittite. 14 The ark of God remained with the family of Obed-Edom in his house for three months, and the Lord blessed his household(P) and everything he had.

David’s House and Family(Q)

14 Now Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, along with cedar logs,(R) stonemasons and carpenters to build a palace for him. 2 And David knew that the Lord had established him as king over Israel and that his kingdom had been highly exalted(S) for the sake of his people Israel.

3 In Jerusalem David took more wives and became the father of more sons(T) and daughters. 4 These are the names of the children born to him there:(U) Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, 5 Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet, 6 Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia, 7 Elishama, Beeliada[d] and Eliphelet.

David Defeats the Philistines(V)

8 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel,(W) they went up in full force to search for him, but David heard about it and went out to meet them. 9 Now the Philistines had come and raided the Valley(X) of Rephaim; 10 so David inquired of God: “Shall I go and attack the Philistines? Will you deliver them into my hands?”

The Lord answered him, “Go, I will deliver them into your hands.”

11 So David and his men went up to Baal Perazim,(Y) and there he defeated them. He said, “As waters break out, God has broken out against my enemies by my hand.” So that place was called Baal Perazim.[e] 12 The Philistines had abandoned their gods there, and David gave orders to burn(Z) them in the fire.(AA)

13 Once more the Philistines raided the valley;(AB) 14 so David inquired of God again, and God answered him, “Do not go directly after them, but circle around them and attack them in front of the poplar trees. 15 As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the poplar trees, move out to battle, because that will mean God has gone out in front of you to strike the Philistine army.” 16 So David did as God commanded him, and they struck down the Philistine army, all the way from Gibeon(AC) to Gezer.(AD)

17 So David’s fame(AE) spread throughout every land, and the Lord made all the nations fear(AF) him.

The Ark Brought to Jerusalem(AG)

15 After David had constructed buildings for himself in the City of David, he prepared(AH) a place for the ark of God and pitched(AI) a tent for it. 2 Then David said, “No one but the Levites(AJ) may carry(AK) the ark of God, because the Lord chose them to carry the ark of the Lord and to minister(AL) before him forever.”

3 David assembled all Israel(AM) in Jerusalem to bring up the ark of the Lord to the place he had prepared for it. 4 He called together the descendants of Aaron and the Levites:(AN)

5 From the descendants of Kohath,

Uriel(AO) the leader and 120 relatives;

6 from the descendants of Merari,

Asaiah the leader and 220 relatives;

7 from the descendants of Gershon,[f]

Joel the leader and 130 relatives;

8 from the descendants of Elizaphan,(AP)

Shemaiah the leader and 200 relatives;

9 from the descendants of Hebron,(AQ)

Eliel the leader and 80 relatives;

10 from the descendants of Uzziel,

Amminadab the leader and 112 relatives.

11 Then David summoned Zadok(AR) and Abiathar(AS) the priests, and Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel and Amminadab the Levites. 12 He said to them, “You are the heads of the Levitical families; you and your fellow Levites are to consecrate(AT) yourselves and bring up the ark of the Lord, the God of Israel, to the place I have prepared for it. 13 It was because you, the Levites,(AU) did not bring it up the first time that the Lord our God broke out in anger against us.(AV) We did not inquire of him about how to do it in the prescribed way.(AW)” 14 So the priests and Levites consecrated themselves in order to bring up the ark of the Lord, the God of Israel. 15 And the Levites carried the ark of God with the poles on their shoulders, as Moses had commanded(AX) in accordance with the word of the Lord.(AY)

16 David(AZ) told the leaders of the Levites(BA) to appoint their fellow Levites as musicians(BB) to make a joyful sound with musical instruments: lyres, harps and cymbals.(BC)

17 So the Levites appointed Heman(BD) son of Joel; from his relatives, Asaph(BE) son of Berekiah; and from their relatives the Merarites,(BF) Ethan son of Kushaiah; 18 and with them their relatives next in rank: Zechariah,[g] Jaaziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-Edom(BG) and Jeiel,[h] the gatekeepers.

19 The musicians Heman,(BH) Asaph and Ethan were to sound the bronze cymbals; 20 Zechariah, Jaaziel,[i] Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Maaseiah and Benaiah were to play the lyres according to alamoth,[j] 21 and Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-Edom, Jeiel and Azaziah were to play the harps, directing according to sheminith.[k] 22 Kenaniah the head Levite was in charge of the singing; that was his responsibility because he was skillful at it.

23 Berekiah and Elkanah were to be doorkeepers for the ark. 24 Shebaniah, Joshaphat, Nethanel, Amasai, Zechariah, Benaiah and Eliezer the priests were to blow trumpets(BI) before the ark of God. Obed-Edom and Jehiah were also to be doorkeepers for the ark.

25 So David and the elders of Israel and the commanders of units of a thousand went to bring up the ark(BJ) of the covenant of the Lord from the house of Obed-Edom, with rejoicing. 26 Because God had helped the Levites who were carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord, seven bulls and seven rams(BK) were sacrificed. 27 Now David was clothed in a robe of fine linen, as were all the Levites who were carrying the ark, and as were the musicians, and Kenaniah, who was in charge of the singing of the choirs. David also wore a linen ephod.(BL) 28 So all Israel(BM) brought up the ark of the covenant of the Lord with shouts,(BN) with the sounding of rams’ horns(BO) and trumpets, and of cymbals, and the playing of lyres and harps.

29 As the ark of the covenant of the Lord was entering the City of David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David dancing and celebrating, she despised him in her heart.
