Förbundsarken erövras av filisteerna

4 (A) Samuels ord kom till hela Israel. Och Israel drog ut till strid mot filisteerna[a] och slog läger vid Eben-Ezer[b], medan filisteerna hade slagit läger vid Afek. 2 Filisteerna ställde då upp sig i slagordning mot Israel. Striden spred sig och israeliterna blev slagna av filisteerna, som nergjorde omkring fyratusen man på slagfältet. 3 (B) När folket kom tillbaka till lägret sade de äldste i Israel: ”Varför har Herren i dag slagit oss inför filisteerna? Låt oss hämta Herrens förbundsark[c] från Shilo så att den är här bland oss och räddar oss från våra fienders hand. 4 (C) Folket sände män till Shilo, och de bar Herren Sebaots förbundsark därifrån, hans som tronar på keruberna[d]. Elis båda söner Hofni och Pinehas följde med Guds förbundsark.

5 När Herrens förbundsark kom in i lägret brast hela Israel ut i ett så högt jubelrop att marken skakade. 6 Filisteerna hörde jubelropet och sade: ”Vad betyder det där höga jubelropet i hebreernas läger?” När filisteerna fick veta att Herrens ark hade kommit in i lägret 7 blev de rädda, för de tänkte: ”Gud har kommit in i lägret.” De sade: ”Ve oss! Något sådant har inte hänt förut. 8 (D) Ve oss! Vem kan rädda oss från den mäktige Gudens hand? Det var den Guden som slog egyptierna med alla slags plågor i öknen. 9 (E) Men fatta mod och var män, filisteer, så ni inte blir slavar åt hebreerna liksom de har varit slavar åt er. Var nu män och kämpa!”

10 Så stred filisteerna, och israeliterna blev slagna och flydde var och en till sitt tält. Nederlaget blev mycket stort, och bland Israel föll trettiotusen man av fotfolket. 11 (F) Dessutom blev Guds ark erövrad, och Elis båda söner Hofni och Pinehas miste livet.

Eli dör

12 (G) En benjaminit sprang från slagfältet och kom samma dag till Shilo, med sönderrivna kläder och jord på sitt huvud. 13 När han kom fram satt Eli på sin stol vid vägkanten och vaktade, för hans hjärta bävade av oro för Guds ark. Så snart mannen kom in i staden och berättade, brast hela staden ut i sorgerop. 14 När Eli hörde ropen sade han: ”Vad är det här för oväsen?” Då skyndade mannen sig dit och berättade för Eli. 15 (H) Men Eli var nittioåtta år gammal, och hans ögon hade starr så att han inte kunde se.

16 Mannen sade till Eli: ”Det är jag som har kommit från slagfältet. Jag flydde från slagfältet i dag.” Då sade Eli: ”Vad har hänt, min son?” 17 Budbäraren svarade: ”Israel har flytt för filisteerna, och många i folket har stupat. Även dina båda söner Hofni och Pinehas är döda, och Guds ark har blivit erövrad.” 18 När han nämnde Guds ark, föll Eli baklänges av stolen vid sidan av porten. Han bröt nacken och dog, för mannen var gammal och tung. Eli hade då varit domare i Israel i fyrtio år.[e]

I-Kabod

19 Hans sonhustru, Pinehas hustru, var havande och nära att föda. Hon fick höra nyheten att Guds ark var bortrövad och att hennes svärfar och man var döda. Då sjönk hon ner och födde sitt barn, för födslovärkarna kom över henne. 20 (I) Medan hon höll på att dö sade kvinnorna som stod omkring henne: ”Var inte rädd, du har fött en son.” Men hon svarade inte och brydde sig inte om det. 21 Hon kallade pojken I-Kabod[f] och sade: ”Härligheten är borta från Israel”, eftersom Guds ark var tagen och hennes svärfar och man var döda. 22 Hon sade: ”Härligheten är borta från Israel, för Guds ark är bortrövad.”

Herrens ark i Dagons tempel

5 Filisteerna tog Guds ark och förde den från Eben-Ezer till Ashdod[g]. 2 (J) De bar in Guds ark i Dagons[h] tempel och ställde den bredvid Dagon. 3 När ashdoditerna tidigt nästa dag kom dit, fick de se Dagon ligga framstupa på marken framför Herrens ark. Då tog de Dagon och reste upp honom igen på hans plats. 4 Men när de kom dit tidigt nästa morgon, såg de återigen Dagon ligga framstupa framför Herrens ark. Dagons huvud och hans båda händer[i] låg avbrutna på tröskeln, bara kroppen satt kvar på honom. 5 I Ashdod trampar man därför än i dag inte på Dagons tröskel[j], varken Dagons präster eller någon annan som går in i Dagons tempel.

6 Herrens hand var tung över ashdoditerna. Han sände förödelse[k] bland dem och slog dem med bölder[l] i Ashdod och bygden däromkring. 7 När Ashdods invånare såg detta sade de: ”Israels Guds ark får inte stanna hos oss, för hans hand är tung över oss och vår gud Dagon.” 8 De sände bud och samlade alla filisteernas furstar och sade: ”Vad ska vi göra med Israels Guds ark?” De svarade: ”Låt Israels Guds ark flyttas till Gat.” Då flyttade de Israels Guds ark dit. 9 Men när de hade flyttat den dit, sände Herrens hand mycket stor förvirring i staden. Han slog stadens folk, både små och stora, med bölder.

10 Då sände de Guds ark till Ekron. Men när Guds ark kom till Ekron, ropade ekroniterna: ”De har skickat hit Israels Guds ark till oss för att döda oss och vårt folk!” 11 De sände bud och samlade alla filisteernas furstar och sade: ”Sänd bort Israels Guds ark, så att den får komma tillbaka till sin plats igen och inte dödar oss och vårt folk.” En dödlig förvirring hade nämligen uppstått i hela staden. Guds hand låg mycket tung över den. 12 De av invånarna som inte dog drabbades av bölder, och ropet från staden steg mot himlen.

Arken återförs till Israels land

6 När Herrens ark hade varit i filisteernas land i sju månader, 2 kallade filisteerna till sig präster och spåmän och sade: ”Vad ska vi göra med Herrens ark? Säg oss hur vi ska sända den tillbaka till dess plats.” 3 De svarade: ”Om ni vill sända i väg Israels Guds ark ska ni inte sända bort den utan gåvor. Ni måste i varje fall ge honom ett skuldoffer. Då ska ni bli botade, och ni ska förstå varför hans hand inte drar sig tillbaka från er.”

4 De frågade: ”Vad för slags skuldoffer ska vi sända honom?” De svarade: ”Fem bölder av guld och fem råttor av guld, lika många som filisteernas furstar, för samma plåga har drabbat er alla och era furstar. 5 (K) Ni ska göra avbildningar av era bölder och avbildningar av råttorna som fördärvar ert land. Ge så ära åt Israels Gud. Kanske lättar han då sin hand över er och era gudar och ert land. 6 (L) Varför förhärdar ni era hjärtan så som farao och egyptierna gjorde? När han visade sin makt mot dem, släppte de då inte israeliterna och lät dem gå?

7 Så gör nu en ny vagn och ta två kor som ger di och som inte har burit något ok. Spänn korna för vagnen, men ta hem deras kalvar från dem. 8 Sätt Herrens ark på vagnen och lägg ner guldföremålen som ni ger honom som skuldoffer[m] i ett skrin vid sidan av den. Sänd sedan i väg vagnen. 9 Se efter om den tar vägen till sitt eget land, till Bet-Shemesh. Då var det han som vållade oss den stora olyckan. Men annars vet vi att det inte var hans hand som slog oss utan att det drabbade oss av en slump.”

10 Männen gjorde så. De tog två kor som gav di och spände dem för vagnen. Men kornas kalvar stängde de in hemma. 11 Och de satte Herrens ark på vagnen och även skrinet med guldråttorna och med avbildningarna av deras bölder. 12 Korna gick raka vägen mot Bet-Shemesh[n]. De gick hela tiden samma väg. De gick där och råmade utan att vika av vare sig till höger eller till vänster. Filisteernas furstar följde efter dem ända till gränsen mot Bet-Shemesh.

13 Folket i Bet-Shemesh höll på med veteskörd[o] i dalen. De lyfte sin blick och fick syn på arken, och de blev mycket glada när de såg den. 14 När vagnen nådde åkern hos Josua från Bet-Shemesh stannade den där, och där låg en stor sten. Då högg de upp trävirket från vagnen och offrade korna till brännoffer åt Herren. 15 Leviterna lyfte ner Herrens ark, tillsammans med skrinet med guldföremålen som stod där bredvid, och satte det på den stora stenen. Invånarna i Bet-Shemesh offrade på den dagen brännoffer och slaktoffer åt Herren. 16 När filisteernas fem furstar hade sett detta, vände de samma dag tillbaka till Ekron.

17 De bölder av guld som filisteerna gav som skuldoffer åt Herren var: en för Ashdod, en för Gaza, en för Ashkelon, en för Gat, en för Ekron. 18 Men guldråttorna var lika många som filisteernas alla städer under de fem furstarna, och då medräknades både befästa städer och landsbygdens byar. Den stora stenen där de satte ner Herrens ark är ett vittne, och den finns kvar än i dag på betshemeshiten Josuas åker.

19 (M) Av invånarna i Bet-Shemesh blev några slagna för att de hade sett in i Herrens ark.[p] Herren dödade sjuttio man bland folket, femtio var hövdingar.[q] Och folket sörjde över att Herren hade slagit så många bland dem.

Arken i Kirjat-Jearim

20 Invånarna i Bet-Shemesh sade: ”Vem kan bestå inför Herren, denne helige Gud? Till vem ska han dra vidare härifrån oss?” 21 De skickade sändebud till dem som bodde i Kirjat-Jearim[r] och sade: ”Filisteerna har sänt tillbaka Herrens ark. Kom ner hit och hämta upp den till er.”

4 And Samuel’s word came to all Israel.

The Philistines Capture the Ark

Now the Israelites went out to fight against the Philistines. The Israelites camped at Ebenezer,(A) and the Philistines at Aphek.(B) 2 The Philistines deployed their forces to meet Israel, and as the battle spread, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand of them on the battlefield. 3 When the soldiers returned to camp, the elders of Israel asked, “Why(C) did the Lord bring defeat on us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark(D) of the Lord’s covenant from Shiloh,(E) so that he may go with us(F) and save us from the hand of our enemies.”

4 So the people sent men to Shiloh, and they brought back the ark of the covenant of the Lord Almighty, who is enthroned between the cherubim.(G) And Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

5 When the ark of the Lord’s covenant came into the camp, all Israel raised such a great shout(H) that the ground shook. 6 Hearing the uproar, the Philistines asked, “What’s all this shouting in the Hebrew(I) camp?”

When they learned that the ark of the Lord had come into the camp, 7 the Philistines were afraid.(J) “A god has[a] come into the camp,” they said. “Oh no! Nothing like this has happened before. 8 We’re doomed! Who will deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? They are the gods who struck(K) the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues(L) in the wilderness. 9 Be strong, Philistines! Be men, or you will be subject to the Hebrews, as they(M) have been to you. Be men, and fight!”

10 So the Philistines fought, and the Israelites were defeated(N) and every man fled to his tent. The slaughter was very great; Israel lost thirty thousand foot soldiers. 11 The ark of God was captured, and Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died.(O)

Death of Eli

12 That same day a Benjamite(P) ran from the battle line and went to Shiloh with his clothes torn and dust(Q) on his head. 13 When he arrived, there was Eli(R) sitting on his chair by the side of the road, watching, because his heart feared for the ark of God. When the man entered the town and told what had happened, the whole town sent up a cry.

14 Eli heard the outcry and asked, “What is the meaning of this uproar?”

The man hurried over to Eli, 15 who was ninety-eight years old and whose eyes(S) had failed so that he could not see. 16 He told Eli, “I have just come from the battle line; I fled from it this very day.”

Eli asked, “What happened, my son?”

17 The man who brought the news replied, “Israel fled before the Philistines, and the army has suffered heavy losses. Also your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead,(T) and the ark of God has been captured.”(U)

18 When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell backward off his chair by the side of the gate. His neck was broken and he died, for he was an old man, and he was heavy. He had led[b](V) Israel forty years.(W)

19 His daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant and near the time of delivery. When she heard the news that the ark of God had been captured and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she went into labor and gave birth, but was overcome by her labor pains. 20 As she was dying, the women attending her said, “Don’t despair; you have given birth to a son.” But she did not respond or pay any attention.

21 She named the boy Ichabod,[c](X) saying, “The Glory(Y) has departed from Israel”—because of the capture of the ark of God and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband. 22 She said, “The Glory(Z) has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured.”(AA)

The Ark in Ashdod and Ekron

5 After the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer(AB) to Ashdod.(AC) 2 Then they carried the ark into Dagon’s temple and set it beside Dagon.(AD) 3 When the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, there was Dagon, fallen(AE) on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! They took Dagon and put him back in his place. 4 But the following morning when they rose, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! His head and hands had been broken(AF) off and were lying on the threshold; only his body remained. 5 That is why to this day neither the priests of Dagon nor any others who enter Dagon’s temple at Ashdod step on the threshold.(AG)

6 The Lord’s hand(AH) was heavy on the people of Ashdod and its vicinity; he brought devastation(AI) on them and afflicted them with tumors.[d](AJ) 7 When the people of Ashdod saw what was happening, they said, “The ark of the god of Israel must not stay here with us, because his hand is heavy on us and on Dagon our god.” 8 So they called together all the rulers(AK) of the Philistines and asked them, “What shall we do with the ark of the god of Israel?”

They answered, “Have the ark of the god of Israel moved to Gath.(AL)” So they moved the ark of the God of Israel.

9 But after they had moved it, the Lord’s hand was against that city, throwing it into a great panic.(AM) He afflicted the people of the city, both young and old, with an outbreak of tumors.[e] 10 So they sent the ark of God to Ekron.(AN)

As the ark of God was entering Ekron, the people of Ekron cried out, “They have brought the ark of the god of Israel around to us to kill us and our people.” 11 So they called together all the rulers(AO) of the Philistines and said, “Send the ark of the god of Israel away; let it go back to its own place, or it[f] will kill us and our people.” For death had filled the city with panic; God’s hand was very heavy on it. 12 Those who did not die(AP) were afflicted with tumors, and the outcry of the city went up to heaven.

The Ark Returned to Israel

6 When the ark of the Lord had been in Philistine territory seven months, 2 the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners(AQ) and said, “What shall we do with the ark of the Lord? Tell us how we should send it back to its place.”

3 They answered, “If you return the ark of the god of Israel, do not send it back to him without a gift;(AR) by all means send a guilt offering(AS) to him. Then you will be healed, and you will know why his hand(AT) has not been lifted from you.”

4 The Philistines asked, “What guilt offering should we send to him?”

They replied, “Five gold tumors and five gold rats, according to the number(AU) of the Philistine rulers, because the same plague(AV) has struck both you and your rulers. 5 Make models of the tumors(AW) and of the rats that are destroying the country, and give glory(AX) to Israel’s god. Perhaps he will lift his hand from you and your gods and your land. 6 Why do you harden(AY) your hearts as the Egyptians and Pharaoh did? When Israel’s god dealt harshly with them,(AZ) did they(BA) not send the Israelites out so they could go on their way?

7 “Now then, get a new cart(BB) ready, with two cows that have calved and have never been yoked.(BC) Hitch the cows to the cart, but take their calves away and pen them up. 8 Take the ark of the Lord and put it on the cart, and in a chest beside it put the gold objects you are sending back to him as a guilt offering. Send it on its way, 9 but keep watching it. If it goes up to its own territory, toward Beth Shemesh,(BD) then the Lord has brought this great disaster on us. But if it does not, then we will know that it was not his hand that struck us but that it happened to us by chance.”

10 So they did this. They took two such cows and hitched them to the cart and penned up their calves. 11 They placed the ark of the Lord on the cart and along with it the chest containing the gold rats and the models of the tumors. 12 Then the cows went straight up toward Beth Shemesh, keeping on the road and lowing all the way; they did not turn to the right or to the left. The rulers of the Philistines followed them as far as the border of Beth Shemesh.

13 Now the people of Beth Shemesh were harvesting their wheat(BE) in the valley, and when they looked up and saw the ark, they rejoiced at the sight. 14 The cart came to the field of Joshua of Beth Shemesh, and there it stopped beside a large rock. The people chopped up the wood of the cart and sacrificed the cows as a burnt offering(BF) to the Lord. 15 The Levites(BG) took down the ark of the Lord, together with the chest containing the gold objects, and placed them on the large rock.(BH) On that day the people of Beth Shemesh(BI) offered burnt offerings and made sacrifices to the Lord. 16 The five rulers of the Philistines saw all this and then returned that same day to Ekron.

17 These are the gold tumors the Philistines sent as a guilt offering to the Lord—one each(BJ) for Ashdod, Gaza, Ashkelon, Gath and Ekron. 18 And the number of the gold rats was according to the number of Philistine towns belonging to the five rulers—the fortified towns with their country villages. The large rock on which the Levites set the ark of the Lord is a witness to this day in the field of Joshua of Beth Shemesh.

19 But God struck down(BK) some of the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh, putting seventy[g] of them to death because they looked(BL) into the ark of the Lord. The people mourned because of the heavy blow the Lord had dealt them. 20 And the people of Beth Shemesh asked, “Who can stand(BM) in the presence of the Lord, this holy(BN) God? To whom will the ark go up from here?”

21 Then they sent messengers to the people of Kiriath Jearim,(BO) saying, “The Philistines have returned the ark of the Lord. Come down and take it up to your town.”

The Death of Eli

4 And the word of Samuel came to all [a]Israel.

The Ark of God Captured

Now Israel went out to battle against the Philistines, and encamped beside (A)Ebenezer; and the Philistines encamped in Aphek. 2 Then the (B)Philistines put themselves in battle array against Israel. And when they joined battle, Israel was [b]defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand men of the army in the field. 3 And when the people had come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, “Why has the Lord defeated us today before the Philistines? (C)Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the Lord from Shiloh to us, that when it comes among us it may save us from the hand of our enemies.” 4 So the people sent to Shiloh, that they might bring from there the ark of the covenant of the Lord of hosts, (D)who dwells between (E)the cherubim. And the (F)two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

5 And when the ark of the covenant of the Lord came into the camp, all Israel shouted so loudly that the earth shook. 6 Now when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, “What does the sound of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews mean?” Then they understood that the ark of the Lord had come into the camp. 7 So the Philistines were afraid, for they said, “God has come into the camp!” And they said, (G)“Woe to us! For such a thing has never happened before. 8 Woe to us! Who will deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? These are the gods who struck the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness. 9 (H)Be strong and conduct yourselves like men, you Philistines, that you do not become servants of the Hebrews, (I)as they have been to you. [c]Conduct yourselves like men, and fight!”

10 So the Philistines fought, and (J)Israel was [d]defeated, and every man fled to his tent. There was a very great slaughter, and there fell of Israel thirty thousand foot soldiers. 11 Also (K)the ark of God was captured; and (L)the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, died.

Death of Eli

12 Then a man of Benjamin ran from the battle line the same day, and (M)came to Shiloh with his clothes torn and (N)dirt on his head. 13 Now when he came, there was Eli, sitting on (O)a seat [e]by the wayside watching, for his heart [f]trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city and told it, all the city cried out. 14 When Eli heard the noise of the outcry, he said, “What does the sound of this tumult mean?” And the man came quickly and told Eli. 15 Eli was ninety-eight years old, and (P)his eyes were so [g]dim that he could not see.

16 Then the man said to Eli, “I am he who came from the battle. And I fled today from the battle line.”

And he said, (Q)“What happened, my son?”

17 So the messenger answered and said, “Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has been a great slaughter among the people. Also your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead; and the ark of God has been captured.”

18 Then it happened, when he made mention of the ark of God, that Eli fell off the seat backward by the side of the gate; and his neck was broken and he died, for the man was old and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.

Ichabod

19 Now his daughter-in-law, Phinehas’ wife, was with child, due to be delivered; and when she heard the news that the ark of God was captured, and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and gave birth, for her labor pains came upon her. 20 And about the time of her death (R)the women who stood by her said to her, “Do not fear, for you have borne a son.” But she did not answer, nor did she [h]regard it. 21 Then she named the child (S)Ichabod,[i] saying, (T)“The glory has departed from Israel!” because the ark of God had been captured and because of her father-in-law and her husband. 22 And she said, “The glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured.”

The Philistines and the Ark

5 Then the Philistines took the ark of God and brought it (U)from Ebenezer to Ashdod. 2 When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of (V)Dagon[j] and set it by Dagon. 3 And when the people of Ashdod arose early in the morning, there was Dagon, (W)fallen on its face to the earth before the ark of the Lord. So they took Dagon and (X)set it in its place again. 4 And when they arose early the next morning, there was Dagon, fallen on its face to the ground before the ark of the Lord. (Y)The head of Dagon and both the palms of its hands were broken off on the threshold; only [k]Dagon’s torso was left of it. 5 Therefore neither the priests of Dagon nor any who come into Dagon’s house (Z)tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod to this day.

6 But the (AA)hand of the Lord was heavy on the people of Ashdod, and He (AB)ravaged them and struck them with (AC)tumors,[l] both Ashdod and its (AD)territory. 7 And when the men of Ashdod saw how it was, they said, “The ark of the (AE)God of Israel must not remain with us, for His hand is harsh toward us and Dagon our god.” 8 Therefore they sent and gathered to themselves all the (AF)lords of the Philistines, and said, “What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel?”

And they answered, “Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried away to (AG)Gath.” So they carried the ark of the God of Israel away. 9 So it was, after they had carried it away, that (AH)the hand of the Lord was against the city with a very great destruction; and He struck the men of the city, both small and great, [m]and tumors broke out on them.

10 Therefore they sent the ark of God to Ekron. So it was, as the ark of God came to Ekron, that the Ekronites cried out, saying, “They have brought the ark of the God of Israel to us, to kill us and our people!” 11 So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, “Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go back to its own place, so that it does not kill us and our people.” For there was a deadly destruction throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there. 12 And the men who did not die were stricken with the tumors, and the (AI)cry of the city went up to heaven.

The Ark Returned to Israel

6 Now the ark of the Lord was in the country of the Philistines seven months. 2 And the Philistines (AJ)called for the priests and the diviners, saying, “What shall we do with the ark of the Lord? Tell us how we should send it to its place.”

3 So they said, “If you send away the ark of the God of Israel, do not send it (AK)empty; but by all means return it to Him with (AL)a trespass offering. Then you will be healed, and it will be known to you why His hand is not removed from you.”

4 Then they said, “What is the trespass offering which we shall return to Him?”

They answered, (AM)“Five golden tumors and five golden rats, according to the number of the lords of the Philistines. For the same plague was on all of [n]you and on your lords. 5 Therefore you shall make images of your tumors and images of your rats that (AN)ravage the land, and you shall (AO)give glory to the God of Israel; perhaps He will (AP)lighten[o] His hand from you, from (AQ)your gods, and from your land. 6 Why then do you harden your hearts (AR)as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? When He did mighty things among them, (AS)did they not let the people go, that they might depart? 7 Now therefore, make (AT)a new cart, take two milk cows (AU)which have never been yoked, and hitch the cows to the cart; and take their calves home, away from them. 8 Then take the ark of the Lord and set it on the cart; and put (AV)the articles of gold which you are returning to Him as a trespass offering in a chest by its side. Then send it away, and let it go. 9 And watch: if it goes up the road to its own territory, to (AW)Beth Shemesh, then He has done [p]us this great evil. But if not, then (AX)we shall know that it is not His hand that struck us—it happened to us by chance.”

10 Then the men did so; they took two milk cows and hitched them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home. 11 And they set the ark of the Lord on the cart, and the chest with the gold rats and the images of their tumors. 12 Then the cows headed straight for the road to Beth Shemesh, and went along the (AY)highway, lowing as they went, and did not turn aside to the right hand or the left. And the lords of the Philistines went after them to the border of Beth Shemesh.

13 Now the people of Beth Shemesh were reaping their (AZ)wheat harvest in the valley; and they lifted their eyes and saw the ark, and rejoiced to see it. 14 Then the cart came into the field of Joshua of Beth Shemesh, and stood there; a large stone was there. So they split the wood of the cart and offered the cows as a burnt offering to the Lord. 15 The Levites took down the ark of the Lord and the chest that was with it, in which were the articles of gold, and put them on the large stone. Then the men of Beth Shemesh offered burnt offerings and made sacrifices the same day to the Lord. 16 So when (BA)the five lords of the Philistines had seen it, they returned to Ekron the same day.

17 (BB)These are the golden tumors which the Philistines returned as a trespass offering to the Lord: one for Ashdod, one for Gaza, one for Ashkelon, one for (BC)Gath, one for Ekron; 18 and the golden rats, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both fortified cities and country villages, even as far as the large stone of Abel on which they set the ark of the Lord, which stone remains to this day in the field of Joshua of Beth Shemesh.

19 Then (BD)He struck the men of Beth Shemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the Lord. [q]He (BE)struck fifty thousand and seventy men of the people, and the people lamented because the Lord had struck the people with a great slaughter.

The Ark at Kirjath Jearim

20 And the men of Beth Shemesh said, (BF)“Who is able to stand before this holy Lord God? And to whom shall it go up from us?” 21 So they sent messengers to the inhabitants of (BG)Kirjath Jearim, saying, “The Philistines have brought back the ark of the Lord; come down and take it up with you.”

The Philistines Capture the Ark

4 And the word of Samuel came to all Israel.

Now Israel went out to battle against the Philistines. They encamped at (A)Ebenezer, and the Philistines encamped at (B)Aphek. 2 The Philistines drew up in line against Israel, and when the battle spread, Israel was defeated before the Philistines, who killed about four thousand men on the field of battle. 3 And when the people came to the camp, the elders of Israel said, “Why has the Lord defeated us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the Lord here (C)from Shiloh, that it[a] may come among us and save us from the power of our enemies.” 4 So the people sent to Shiloh and brought from there the ark of the covenant of the Lord of hosts, (D)who is enthroned on the cherubim. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

5 As soon as the ark of the covenant of the Lord came into the camp, all Israel (E)gave a mighty shout, so that the earth resounded. 6 And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shouting, they said, “What does this great shouting in the camp of the Hebrews mean?” And when they learned that the ark of the Lord had come to the camp, 7 the Philistines were afraid, for they said, “A god has come into the camp.” And they said, “Woe to us! For nothing like this has happened before. 8 Woe to us! Who can deliver us from the power of these mighty gods? These are the gods who struck the Egyptians with every sort of plague in the wilderness. 9 (F)Take courage, and be men, O Philistines, lest you become slaves to the Hebrews (G)as they have been to you; be men and fight.”

10 So the Philistines fought, (H)and Israel was defeated, (I)and they fled, every man to his home. And there was a very great slaughter, for thirty thousand foot soldiers of Israel fell. 11 (J)And the ark of God was captured, (K)and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, died.

The Death of Eli

12 A man of Benjamin ran from the battle line and came to Shiloh the same day, (L)with his clothes torn and with dirt on his head. 13 When he arrived, (M)Eli was sitting on his seat by the road watching, for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city and told the news, all the city cried out. 14 When Eli heard the sound of the outcry, he said, “What is this uproar?” Then the man hurried and came and told Eli. 15 Now Eli was ninety-eight years old (N)and his eyes were set so that he could not see. 16 And the man said to Eli, “I am he who has come from the battle; I fled from the battle today.” And he said, (O)“How did it go, my son?” 17 He who brought the news answered and said, “Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has also been a great defeat among the people. Your two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been captured.” 18 As soon as he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell over backward (P)from his seat by the side of the gate, and his neck was broken and he died, for the man was old and heavy. The Philistines and the Ark

5 When the Philistines captured the ark of God, they brought it from (V)Ebenezer to (W)Ashdod. 2 Then the Philistines took the ark of God and brought it into the house of Dagon and set it up beside (X)Dagon. 3 And when the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, behold, (Y)Dagon had fallen face downward on the ground before the ark of the Lord. So they took Dagon and put him back in his place. 4 But when they rose early on the next morning, behold, Dagon had fallen face downward on the ground before the ark of the Lord, (Z)and the head of Dagon and both his hands were lying cut off on the threshold. Only the trunk of Dagon was left to him. 5 This is why the priests of Dagon and all who enter the house of Dagon (AA)do not tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod to this day.

6 (AB)The hand of the Lord was heavy against the people of Ashdod, and he terrified and afflicted them with (AC)tumors, both Ashdod and its territory. 7 And when the men of Ashdod saw how things were, they said, “The ark of the God of Israel must not remain with us, for his hand is hard against us and against Dagon our god.” 8 So they sent and gathered together all (AD)the lords of the Philistines and said, “What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel?” They answered, “Let the ark of the God of Israel be brought around to Gath.” So they brought the ark of the God of Israel there. 9 But after they had brought it around, (AE)the hand of the Lord was against the city, causing a very great panic, and he afflicted the men of the city, both young and old, so that (AF)tumors broke out on them. 10 So they sent the ark of God to Ekron. But as soon as the ark of God came to Ekron, the people of Ekron cried out, “They have brought around to us the ark of the God of Israel to kill us and our people.” 11 (AG)They sent therefore and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines and said, “Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it return to its own place, that it may not kill us and our people.” For there was a deathly panic throughout the whole city. (AH)The hand of God was very heavy there. 12 The men who did not die were struck with (AI)tumors, and the cry of the city went up to heaven.

After he had dealt severely with them, (AU)did they not send the people away, and they departed? 7 Now then, take and prepare (AV)a new cart and two milk cows (AW)on which there has never come a yoke, and yoke the cows to the cart, but take their calves home, away from them. 8 And take the ark of the Lord and place it on the cart and put in a box at its side (AX)the figures of gold, which you are returning to him as (AY)a guilt offering. Then send it off and let it go its way 9 and watch. If it goes up on the way to its own land, to (AZ)Beth-shemesh, then it is he who has done us this great harm, but if not, then we shall know that it is not (BA)his hand that struck us; it happened to us by coincidence.”

10 The men did so, and took two milk cows and yoked them to the cart and shut up their calves at home. 11 And they put the ark of the Lord on the cart and the box with the golden mice and the images of their tumors. 12 And the cows went straight in the direction of (BB)Beth-shemesh along (BC)one highway, lowing as they went. They turned neither to the right nor to the left, and the lords of the Philistines went after them as far as the border of (BD)Beth-shemesh. 13 Now the people of (BE)Beth-shemesh were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley. And when they lifted up their eyes and saw the ark, they rejoiced to see it. 14 The cart came into the field of Joshua of Beth-shemesh and stopped there. (BF)A great stone was there. And they split up the wood of the cart and offered the cows as a burnt offering to the Lord. 15 And the Levites took down the ark of the Lord and the box that was beside it, in which were the golden figures, and set them upon (BG)the great stone. 17 These are the golden tumors that the Philistines returned as a (BJ)guilt offering to the Lord: one for Ashdod, one for Gaza, one for Ashkelon, one for Gath, one for Ekron, 18 and the golden mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, (BK)both fortified cities and unwalled villages. (BL)The great stone beside which they set down the ark of the Lord is a witness to this day in the field of Joshua of Beth-shemesh.

19 (BM)And he struck some of the men of Beth-shemesh, because they looked upon the ark of the Lord. He struck seventy men of them,[c] and the people mourned because the Lord had struck the people with a great blow. 20 Then the men of Beth-shemesh said, (BN)“Who is able to stand before the Lord, this holy God? And to whom shall he go up away from us?” 21 So they sent messengers to the inhabitants of (BO)Kiriath-jearim, saying, “The Philistines have returned the ark of the Lord. Come down and take it up to you.”
