Gli schiavi
6 Quelli che si trovano sotto il giogo della schiavitù, trattino con ogni rispetto i loro padroni, perché non vengano bestemmiati il nome di Dio e la dottrina. 2 Quelli poi che hanno padroni credenti, non manchino loro di riguardo perché sono fratelli, ma li servano ancora meglio, proprio perché sono credenti e amati coloro che ricevono i loro servizi.
Ritratto del vero e del falso dottore
Questo devi insegnare e raccomandare.
3 Se qualcuno insegna diversamente e non segue le sane parole del Signore nostro Gesù Cristo e la dottrina secondo la pietà, 4 costui è accecato dall'orgoglio, non comprende nulla ed è preso dalla febbre di cavilli e di questioni oziose. Da ciò nascono le invidie, i litigi, le maldicenze, i sospetti cattivi, 5 i conflitti di uomini corrotti nella mente e privi della verità, che considerano la pietà come fonte di guadagno.
6 Certo, la pietà è un grande guadagno, congiunta però a moderazione! 7 Infatti non abbiamo portato nulla in questo mondo e nulla possiamo portarne via. 8 Quando dunque abbiamo di che mangiare e di che coprirci, contentiamoci di questo. 9 Al contrario coloro che vogliono arricchire, cadono nella tentazione, nel laccio e in molte bramosie insensate e funeste, che fanno affogare gli uomini in rovina e perdizione. 10 L'attaccamento al denaro infatti è la radice di tutti i mali; per il suo sfrenato desiderio alcuni hanno deviato dalla fede e si sono da se stessi tormentati con molti dolori.
Raccomandazione solenne a Timoteo
11 Ma tu, uomo di Dio, fuggi queste cose; tendi alla giustizia, alla pietà, alla fede, alla carità, alla pazienza, alla mitezza. 12 Combatti la buona battaglia della fede, cerca di raggiungere la vita eterna alla quale sei stato chiamato e per la quale hai fatto la tua bella professione di fede davanti a molti testimoni.
13 Al cospetto di Dio che dà vita a tutte le cose e di Gesù Cristo che ha dato la sua bella testimonianza davanti a Ponzio Pilato, 14 ti scongiuro di conservare senza macchia e irreprensibile il comandamento, fino alla manifestazione del Signore nostro Gesù Cristo, 15 che al tempo stabilito sarà a noi rivelata dal beato e unico sovrano, il re dei regnanti e signore dei signori, 16 il solo che possiede l'immortalità, che abita una luce inaccessibile; che nessuno fra gli uomini ha mai visto né può vedere. A lui onore e potenza per sempre. Amen.

17 Ai ricchi in questo mondo raccomanda di non essere orgogliosi, di non riporre la speranza sull'incertezza delle ricchezze, ma in Dio, che tutto ci dà con abbondanza perché ne possiamo godere; 18 di fare del bene, di arricchirsi di opere buone, di essere pronti a dare, di essere generosi, 19 mettendosi così da parte un buon capitale per il futuro, per acquistarsi la vita vera.
Raccomandazione finale e saluto
20 O Timòteo, custodisci il deposito; evita le chiacchiere profane e le obiezioni della cosiddetta scienza, 21 professando la quale taluni hanno deviato dalla fede.

6 All who are under the yoke of slavery should consider their masters worthy of full respect,(A) so that God’s name and our teaching may not be slandered.(B) 2 Those who have believing masters should not show them disrespect just because they are fellow believers.(C) Instead, they should serve them even better because their masters are dear to them as fellow believers and are devoted to the welfare[a] of their slaves.
False Teachers and the Love of Money
These are the things you are to teach and insist on.(D) 3 If anyone teaches otherwise(E) and does not agree to the sound instruction(F) of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, 4 they are conceited(G) and understand nothing. They have an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words(H) that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions 5 and constant friction between people of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth(I) and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain.
6 But godliness with contentment(J) is great gain.(K) 7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.(L) 8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.(M) 9 Those who want to get rich(N) fall into temptation and a trap(O) and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money(P) is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith(Q) and pierced themselves with many griefs.(R)
Final Charge to Timothy
11 But you, man of God,(S) flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness,(T) faith, love,(U) endurance and gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight(V) of the faith. Take hold of(W) the eternal life(X) to which you were called when you made your good confession(Y) in the presence of many witnesses. 13 In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate(Z) made the good confession,(AA) I charge you(AB) 14 to keep this command without spot or blame(AC) until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,(AD) 15 which God will bring about in his own time(AE)—God, the blessed(AF) and only Ruler,(AG) the King of kings and Lord of lords,(AH) 16 who alone is immortal(AI) and who lives in unapproachable light,(AJ) whom no one has seen or can see.(AK) To him be honor and might forever. Amen.(AL)
17 Command those who are rich(AM) in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth,(AN) which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God,(AO) who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.(AP) 18 Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds,(AQ) and to be generous and willing to share.(AR) 19 In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves(AS) as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of(AT) the life that is truly life.
20 Timothy, guard what has been entrusted(AU) to your care. Turn away from godless chatter(AV) and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge, 21 which some have professed and in so doing have departed from the faith.(AW)

6 Dapat igalang nang lubusan ng mga alipin ang kanilang panginoon upang hindi lapastanganin ang pangalan ng Diyos at ang mga aral. 2 At kung ang amo nila'y kapwa mananampalataya, hindi dapat mawala ang kanilang paggalang dahil sila ay magkapatid sa pananampalataya. Dapat pa nga nilang mas paghusayin ang kanilang paglilingkod dahil ang pinaglilingkuran nila'y mga minamahal na kapatid.
Maling Katuruan at Tunay na Kayamanan
Ang mga ito ang dapat mong ituro at bigyang-diin sa mga tao. 3 Sinumang nagtuturo ng ibang aral at hindi sumasang-ayon sa tunay na salita ng ating Panginoong Jesu-Cristo at katuruang naaayon sa banal na pamumuhay, 4 siya ay nagyayabang at walang nalalaman. Mahilig siya sa mga pagtatalo tungkol sa mga salita, na nauuwi sa inggitan, alitan, panlalait, masamang hinala, 5 sa pag-aaway ng mga taong marumi ang pag-iisip, ayaw kumilala sa katotohanan, at nag-aakalang ang banal na pamumuhay ay paraan ng pagpapayaman. 6 Subalit ang banal na pamumuhay na may kasiyahan ay malaking pakinabang. 7 Sapagkat wala tayong dinalang anuman sa sanlibutan, at pag-alis dito'y wala rin tayong madadalang anuman. 8 Kung tayo'y may pagkain at damit, sa mga ito'y dapat na tayong masiyahan. 9 Subalit ang mga naghahangad yumaman ay nahuhulog sa tukso at sa bitag ng kahangalan at nakapipinsalang pagnanasa. Ang mga ito ang magtutulak sa tao ng kapahamakan. 10 Sapagkat ang pag-ibig sa salapi ay ugat ng lahat ng uri ng kasamaan. Sa paghahangad na yumaman, may mga taong nalayo sa pananampalataya at nasadlak sa maraming kapighatian.
Ang Mabuting Laban ng Pananampalataya
11 Ngunit ikaw na lingkod ng Diyos, layuan mo ang mga bagay na ito. Pagsikapan mong mamuhay sa katuwiran, kabanalan, pananampalataya, pag-ibig, pagtitiis, at kahinahunan. 12 Ipaglaban mong mabuti ang pananampalataya. Panghawakan mo ang buhay na walang hanggan na siyang dahilan ng pagkatawag sa iyo nang maipahayag mo ang mabuting pagpapahayag sa harapan ng maraming saksi. 13 Inuutos ko sa iyo, sa (A) harap ng Diyos na nagbibigay ng buhay sa lahat ng bagay, at ni Cristo Jesus na nagbigay ng mabuting patotoo sa harap ni Poncio Pilato, 14 sundin mong mabuti at may katapatan ang mga iniutos sa iyo hanggang sa pagpapakita ng ating Panginoong Jesu-Cristo. 15 Ipapakita siya ng Diyos sa takdang panahon, ang Diyos na mapagpala at tanging Makapangyarihan, Hari ng mga hari, at Panginoon ng mga panginoon. 16 Siya lamang ang walang kamatayan at nananahan sa liwanag na di-malapitan! Walang taong nakakita o makakakita sa kanya. Sumakanya nawa ang karangalan at paghaharing walang hanggan. Amen.
17 Utusan mo ang mayayaman sa kapanahunang ito na huwag silang magmataas o magtiwala sa kayamanang lumilipas at pansamantala lamang. Sa halip ay magtiwala sila sa Diyos na masaganang nagkakaloob ng lahat ng bagay para sa ating kasiyahan. 18 Turuan mo silang gumawa ng kabutihan at maging mayaman sa mabuting gawa, maging bukas-palad at namamahagi sa nangangailangan. 19 Sa ganitong paraan sila makapag-iipon ng kayamanan para sa matatag na bukas upang magkamit ng tunay na buhay.
20 Timoteo, ingatan mo ang ipinagkatiwala sa iyo. Iwasan mo ang mga usapang walang kabuluhan at ang mga pangangatwiran ng huwad na kaalaman. 21 Dahil sa kanilang pagmamarunong, may mga taong nalihis sa pananampalataya.
Pagpalain nawa kayo ng Diyos.[a]
