Saul besegrar ammoniterna
11 Ammoniten Nahas drog upp och belägrade Jabesh i Gilead. Då sade alla män i Jabesh till Nahas: "Slut förbund med oss, så skall vi tjäna dig." 2 Ammoniten Nahas svarade dem: "På det villkoret skall jag sluta förbund med er, att jag får sticka ut högra ögat på er alla och därmed dra skam över hela Israel." 3 De äldste i Jabesh sade till honom: "Ge oss sju dagars frist, så att vi kan skicka sändebud över hela Israels land. Om då ingen vill hjälpa oss, ger vi oss åt dig." 4 Sändebuden kom till Sauls Gibea och berättade detta för folket. Då brast allt folket ut i gråt.
5 Just då kom Saul gående från åkern bakom sina oxar, och Saul frågade: "Vad är det med folket, eftersom de gråter?" De berättade för honom vad männen från Jabesh hade sagt. 6 När Saul hörde detta föll Guds Ande över honom, och han blev mycket vred. 7 Han tog ett par oxar och styckade dem och sände omkring styckena med sändebuden över hela Israels land och lät säga: "Den som inte drar ut efter Saul och Samuel, med hans oxar skall det göras på detta sätt." Då kom förskräckelse från Herren över folket, så att de drog ut som en man. 8 Och Saul inmönstrade dem i Besek, och Israels barn utgjorde då 300 000 och Juda män 30 000.
9 De sade till sändebuden som hade kommit: "Så skall ni säga till männen i Jabesh i Gilead: I morgon skall ni få hjälp, när solen bränner som hetast." Sändebuden kom och meddelade männen i Jabesh detta, och de blev glada över beskedet. 10 Då meddelade männen i Jabesh ammoniterna: "I morgon skall vi ge oss åt er, och ni får då göra med oss vad ni finner för gott."
11 Dagen därefter delade Saul upp folket i tre grupper. De trängde in i lägret vid morgonväkten och nergjorde ammoniterna ända till dess dagen blev som hetast. De som kom undan blev så kringspridda att inte två av dem kom undan tillsammans. 12 Då sade folket till Samuel: "Vilka var de som sade: Skulle Saul bli kung över oss! Tag hit dessa män, så att vi får döda dem." 13 Men Saul sade: "Denna dag skall ingen dödas, för i dag har Herren gett seger åt Israel." 14 Samuel sade till folket: "Kom, låt oss gå till Gilgal och förnya kungadömet där." 15 Då gick allt folket till Gilgal och gjorde Saul till kung där inför Herren i Gilgal. De offrade gemenskapsoffer inför Herrens ansikte, och Saul och alla Israels män var mycket glada.

Saul saves Jabesh town
11 One month later, Nahash went with his army to attack Jabesh, a town in Gilead region. Nahash was an Ammonite.[a] The people in Jabesh said to him, ‘Make an agreement with us so that we will serve you.’ 2 Nahash said, ‘I will make an agreement with you only if you let me do this. I must cut out the right eye of every person in your town. I want to bring shame on all Israel's people.’
3 The leaders of Jabesh said to him, ‘Wait for seven more days. We will send a message to all the people in Israel. We will ask them to rescue us. If nobody comes to save us, we will agree to whatever you say.’
4 Men took the message to Gibeah, the town where Saul lived. When they told the news to the people there, the people started to weep loudly. 5 Saul had been out on his farm. As he was returning home with his cows, he asked, ‘What has happened here? Why are the people weeping?’ They told Saul what the men from Jabesh had said.
6 When Saul heard the news, God's Spirit came on him with power. He became very angry. 7 He killed two of his oxen. He cut their bodies into pieces. He sent men with the pieces to all the towns in Israel. In each town, the men said, ‘Everyone must join Saul and Samuel to fight in their army. If you do not agree to join them, they will cut up your oxen just like this!’ The people became very afraid of what the Lord would do. So they all came together as one army. 8 They met together at Bezek. Saul counted 300,000 men from Israel and 30,000 men from Judah.[b]
9 Saul said to the men who had brought the news from Jabesh, ‘Return to Jabesh. Tell the people, “We will come to rescue you tomorrow, before midday.” ’
So the men took the message to the people in Jabesh. The people were very happy. 10 The men there said to Nahash, ‘Tomorrow we will come out of the town to you. Then you can do anything that you want to us.’
11 Early the next day, Saul put his soldiers into three groups. At dawn, they attacked the camp of the Ammonite soldiers. The Israelite soldiers continued to kill the Ammonites until midday. The Ammonite soldiers who were still alive ran away in different directions. Each man ran off by himself.
12 The Israelite people said to Samuel, ‘Bring to us those men who said, “We do not want Saul to rule over us.” We must kill them!’
13 Saul said, ‘No, you must not kill anyone today. It is the day when the Lord has rescued Israel's people.’
14 Samuel said to the people, ‘Now we will all go to Gilgal. We must all agree that Saul will continue to be our king.’ 15 So everyone went to Gilgal. They went to the place where they worshipped the Lord. They all agreed that Saul would be their king. They offered peace offerings to the Lord. Saul and all the Israelites were very happy.

11 And Nahash the Ammonite cometh up, and encampeth against Jabesh-Gilead, and all the men of Jabesh say unto Nahash, `Make with us a covenant, and we serve thee.'
2 And Nahash the Ammonite saith unto them, `For this I covenant with you, by picking out to you every right eye -- and I have put it a reproach on all Israel.'
3 And the elders of Jabesh say to him, `Let us alone seven days, and we send messengers into all the border of Israel: and if there is none saving us -- then we have come out unto thee.'
4 And the messengers come to Gibeah of Saul, and speak the words in the ears of the people, and all the people lift up their voice and weep;
5 and lo, Saul hath come after the herd out of the field, and Saul saith, `What -- to the people, that they weep?' and they recount to him the words of the men of Jabesh.
6 And the Spirit of God doth prosper over Saul, in his hearing these words, and his anger burneth greatly,
7 and he taketh a couple of oxen, and cutteth them in pieces, and sendeth through all the border of Israel, by the hand of the messengers, saying, `He who is not coming out after Saul and after Samuel -- thus it is done to his oxen;' and the fear of Jehovah falleth on the people, and they come out as one man.
8 And he inspecteth them in Bezek, and the sons of Israel are three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.
9 And they say to the messengers who are coming, `Thus do ye say to the men of Jabesh-Gilead: To-morrow ye have safety -- by the heat of the sun;' and the messengers come and declare to the men of Jabesh, and they rejoice;
10 and the men of Jabesh say [to the Ammonites], `To-morrow we come out unto you, and ye have done to us according to all that [is] good in your eyes.'
11 And it cometh to pass, on the morrow, that Saul putteth the people in three detachments, and they come into the midst of the camp in the morning-watch, and smite Ammon till the heat of the day; and it cometh to pass that those left are scattered, and there have not been left of them two together.
12 And the people say unto Samuel, `Who is he that saith, Saul doth reign over us! give ye up the men, and we put them to death.'
13 And Saul saith, `There is no man put to death on this day, for to-day hath Jehovah wrought salvation in Israel.'
14 And Samuel saith unto the people, `Come and we go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there;'
15 and all the people go to Gilgal, and cause Saul to reign there before Jehovah in Gilgal, and sacrifice there sacrifices of peace-offerings before Jehovah, and there Saul rejoiceth -- and all the men of Israel -- very greatly.
