Los filisteos devuelven el arca
6 El arca del Señor había estado siete meses en la tierra[a] de los filisteos. 2 Entonces los filisteos llamaron a los sacerdotes y a los adivinos(A) y les preguntaron: «¿Qué haremos con el arca del Señor? Dígannos cómo[b] la hemos de enviar a su lugar». 3 Y ellos contestaron: «Si envían el arca del Dios de Israel, no la envíen vacía(B); sino que ciertamente devolverán a Dios una ofrenda por la culpa(C). Entonces serán sanados y sabrán por qué Su mano no se ha apartado de ustedes».
4 Y los filisteos preguntaron: «¿Cuál será la ofrenda por la culpa que le hemos de devolver?». Y ellos dijeron: «Cinco tumores de oro(D) y cinco ratones de oro conforme al número de los príncipes de los filisteos(E), porque la misma plaga estuvo sobre todos ustedes y sobre sus príncipes. 5 Harán, pues, semejanzas de sus tumores, y semejanzas de sus ratones que asolan la tierra, y darán gloria al Dios de Israel(F). Tal vez Él alivie Su mano de sobre ustedes(G), de sobre sus dioses y de sobre su tierra(H). 6 ¿Por qué entonces endurecen sus corazones, como endurecieron sus corazones los egipcios y Faraón(I)? Cuando Él los trató severamente, ¿no dejaron ir al pueblo[c], y ellos se fueron(J)?
7 »Ahora pues, tomen y preparen un carro nuevo(K) y dos vacas con crías sobre las cuales no se haya puesto ningún yugo(L). Aten las vacas al carro y lleven sus becerros a casa, lejos de ellas. 8 Tomen el arca del Señor y colóquenla en el carro; y pongan en una caja a su lado los objetos de oro(M) que le entregarán como ofrenda por la culpa(N). Luego, déjenla ir, y que se vaya. 9 Y observen bien: si sube por el camino de su territorio[d] a Bet Semes(O), entonces Él nos ha hecho este gran mal. Pero si no, entonces sabremos que no fue Su mano la que nos hirió(P); nos sucedió por casualidad».
10 Entonces los hombres lo hicieron así. Tomaron dos vacas con crías, las ataron al carro y encerraron sus becerros en casa. 11 Colocaron el arca del Señor en el carro, y la caja con los ratones de oro y las semejanzas de sus tumores. 12 Y las vacas tomaron el camino recto en dirección[e] a Bet Semes(Q). Iban por el camino(R), mugiendo mientras iban, y no se desviaron ni a la derecha ni a la izquierda. Los príncipes de los filisteos las siguieron hasta el límite de Bet Semes. 13 El pueblo de Bet Semes estaba segando el[f] trigo en el valle, y alzaron sus ojos y, al ver el arca, se alegraron al verla.
14 El carro llegó al campo de Josué el betsemita y se detuvo allí donde había una gran piedra; y ellos partieron la madera del carro y ofrecieron las vacas en holocausto al Señor(S). 15 Los levitas bajaron el arca del Señor y la caja que estaba con ella, en la cual estaban los objetos de oro, y las colocaron sobre la piedra grande(T). Entonces los hombres de Bet Semes ofrecieron holocaustos e hicieron sacrificios aquel día al Señor. 16 Cuando los cinco príncipes de los filisteos vieron esto, regresaron a Ecrón(U) el mismo día.
17 Estos son los tumores de oro que los filisteos entregaron como ofrenda por la culpa al Señor(V): uno por Asdod, uno por Gaza, uno por Ascalón, uno por Gat y uno por Ecrón; 18 y ratones de oro conforme al número de todas las ciudades de los filisteos que pertenecían a los cinco príncipes, tanto de ciudades fortificadas como de aldeas sin murallas(W). La piedra grande[g] sobre la cual colocaron el arca del Señor es testigo hasta el día de hoy en el campo de Josué el betsemita(X).
19 El Señor hirió a los hombres de Bet Semes porque habían mirado dentro del arca del Señor. De todo el pueblo hirió a 50,070 hombres, y el pueblo lloró porque el Señor había herido al pueblo con gran mortandad(Y). 20 Y los hombres de Bet Semes dijeron: «¿Quién puede estar delante del Señor, este Dios santo(Z)? ¿Y a quién subirá al alejarse de nosotros?». 21 Entonces enviaron mensajeros a los habitantes de Quiriat Jearim(AA) y les dijeron: «Los filisteos han devuelto el arca del Señor; desciendan, y llévenla con ustedes».

De kist van God wordt teruggestuurd naar Israël
6 Toen de kist van de Heer zeven maanden in het gebied van de Filistijnen was, 2 lieten de Filistijnen de priesters en de waarzeggers komen. Ze vroegen hun: "Hoe moeten we de kist van de Heer naar zijn eigen plaats terugsturen?" 3 Ze zeiden: "Als jullie de kist van de God van Israël terugsturen, moeten jullie dat niet zómaar doen. Jullie moeten in ieder geval een geschenk voor Hem meegeven om het weer goed te maken. Dan zullen jullie genezen. En jullie zullen ontdekken waarom Hij jullie aldoor straft." 4 Toen vroegen ze: "Wat zullen we Hem geven?" Ze antwoordden: "Vijf gouden puisten en vijf gouden muizen. Dus van elke stadskoning één. Want iedereen is door de ramp getroffen, ook de stadskoningen. 5 Maak dus afbeeldingen van jullie puisten en van de muizen die het land verwoesten. Eer de God van Israël daarmee. Misschien zal Hij dan een einde maken aan de ramp waarmee Hij ons, onze god en ons land straft. 6 Waarom zouden jullie net zo koppig zijn als vroeger de Egyptenaren en de farao? Zij hebben toch ook uiteindelijk moeten toegeven, toen Hij hun liet zien hoe machtig Hij is? En toen hebben ze de Israëlieten laten vertrekken. 7 Zorg dus voor een nieuwe wagen en laat die trekken door twee koeien die net een kalf hebben gekregen. Het moeten koeien zijn die nog nooit een juk hebben gedragen. Span die koeien voor de wagen, maar laat hun kalfjes bij ze weghalen. 8 Zet de kist van de Heer op de wagen. Doe de gouden puisten en gouden muizen die jullie Hem geven om het goed te maken in een kistje. Zet dat kistje naast de kist van God op de wagen. Laat dan de wagen met de kist gaan. 9 Let op wat er gebeurt: als de koeien de weg naar Bet-Semes opgaan, dan is het God die deze grote ramp over ons heeft gebracht. Maar als ze niet die kant op gaan,[a] dan weten we dat Hij het niet heeft gedaan. Dan is het ons toevallig overkomen."
10 Dit deden ze. Ze namen twee koeien die net een kalf gekregen hadden en spanden die voor de wagen. Maar de kalfjes hielden ze thuis. 11 Ze zetten de kist van de Heer op de wagen, samen met het kistje met de gouden muizen en de gouden puisten. 12 De koeien gingen regelrecht de weg op naar Bet-Semes. Ze liepen al loeiend rechtdoor, zonder ook maar ergens van de weg af te gaan. De stadskoningen van de Filistijnen volgden de wagen tot vlak bij Bet-Semes.
De kist van het verbond in Bet-Semes
13 De bewoners van Bet-Semes waren juist in het dal bezig met het oogsten van de tarwe. Toen zij opkeken, zagen ze tot hun grote blijdschap de kist aankomen. 14 De wagen stopte bij het veld van één van de bewoners, Jozua. Daar lag een grote steen. Ze slachtten de koeien, hakten de wagen in stukken en gebruikten het hout als brandhout. Zo brachten ze een brand-offer aan de Heer. 15 De Levieten tilden de kist van de Heer van de wagen. Ze zetten hem op de grote steen. Het kistje met de gouden puisten en gouden muizen zetten ze naast de kist van de Heer. Die dag brachten de bewoners van Bet-Semes brand-offers en vlees-offers aan de Heer. 16 Zodra de vijf stadskoningen van de Filistijnen hadden gezien wat er gebeurde, gingen ze terug naar Ekron.
17 De Filistijnen gaven vijf gouden puisten aan de Heer om het goed te maken: één van Asdod, één van Gaza, één van Askelon, één van Gat en één van Ekron. 18 Verder net zoveel gouden muizen als het aantal steden waar de Filistijnse stadskoningen over heersten, dus alle steden met muren en de dorpen die daarbij hoorden tot aan Abel. De grote steen Abel waarop de kist van de Heer heeft gestaan, ligt nog steeds daar in het veld van Jozua.
19 Maar de Heer doodde een groot aantal mannen van Bet-Semes, omdat ze in de kist van de Heer hadden gekeken.[b] Hij doodde 70 bewoners, namelijk 50 per 1000 mensen. Het volk treurde omdat de Heer zoveel mensen had gedood. 20 Ze zeiden: "Wie kan vlak bij de Heer komen en in leven blijven? Hij is een heilige God! En naar wie moeten we de kist van God sturen?" 21 Ze stuurden mannen naar Kirjat-Jearim met de boodschap: "De Filistijnen hebben de kist van het verbond van de Heer teruggebracht. Jullie kunnen hem hier komen halen."

- 1 Samuël 6:9 Het zou normaal zijn als de koeien hun jongen achterna zouden gaan, of zomaar een kant op zouden gaan. Want omdat ze nog nooit eerder onder een juk hadden gelopen, zouden ze heel goed in paniek kunnen raken. Het zou dus een wonder van God zijn als ze de weg naar Israël zouden inslaan.
- 1 Samuël 6:19 Ze hadden geen respect voor de Heer gehad. Want eigenlijk mocht niemand ooit de kist van het verbond zien of aanraken. Laat staan dat mensen er zomaar in mochten kijken! Lees Leviticus 16:2 en Exodus 40:3. Alleen de hogepriester mocht de kist zien, één keer per jaar.

The Ark of the Covenant of God Is Sent Home
6 The Philistines kept the Ark of the Covenant of God in their land seven months. 2 Then they called for their priests and magicians. They said, “What should we do with the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord? Tell us how to send it back home!”
3 The priests and magicians answered them. They said, “If you send back the Ark of the Covenant of the God of Israel, don’t send it away empty. You must offer a penalty offering so the God of Israel will forgive your sins. Then you will be healed. When God has forgiven you, he will stop punishing you.”
4 The Philistines asked, “What kind of penalty offering should we send to Israel’s God?”
The priests and magicians answered, “Make five gold models of the growths on your skin. Also make five gold models of rats. The number of models must be the same as the number of Philistine kings. This is because the same sickness has come on you and your kings. 5 Make models of the growths and the rats that are ruining the country. Give them to Israel’s God and honor him. Then maybe Israel’s God will stop punishing you, your gods and your land. 6 Don’t be stubborn like the king of Egypt and the Egyptians. God punished them terribly. That is why the Egyptians let the Israelites leave Egypt.
7 “You must build a new cart. And get two cows that have just had calves. These must be cows that have never had yokes on their necks. Then hitch the cows to the cart. Take the calves home. Don’t let them follow their mothers. 8 Put the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord on the cart. And put the gold models in a box beside the Ark of the Covenant. They are your penalty offerings for God to forgive your sins. Send the cart straight on its way. 9 Watch the cart. It may go toward Beth Shemesh in Israel’s own land. If so, the Lord has given us this great sickness. But it may not go toward Beth Shemesh. Then we will know that Israel’s God has not punished us. We will know that our sickness just happened by chance.”
10 The Philistines did what the priests and magicians said. They took two cows that had just had calves. They hitched them to the cart. But they kept their calves at home. 11 They put the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord on the cart. And they put the box with the gold rats and models of growths on the cart. 12 Then the cows went straight toward Beth Shemesh. They stayed on the road, mooing all the way. They did not turn right or left. The Philistine kings followed the cows as far as the border of Beth Shemesh.
13 Now the people of Beth Shemesh were harvesting their wheat in the valley. They looked up and saw the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord. They were very happy to see it again. 14 The cart came to the field belonging to Joshua of Beth Shemesh. The cart stopped in this field near a large rock. The people of Beth Shemesh chopped up the wood of the cart. Then they killed the cows and sacrificed them to the Lord. 15 The Levites took down the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord. They also took down the box that had the gold models. They put both on the large rock. That day the people of Beth Shemesh offered whole burnt offerings and made sacrifices to the Lord. 16 The five Philistine kings watched them do all these things. Then they went back to Ekron the same day.
17 The Philistines sent these gold models of the growths. They were penalty offerings to the Lord for their sins. They sent one model for each Philistine town. These towns were Ashdod, Gaza, Ashkelon, Gath and Ekron. 18 And the Philistines also sent gold models of rats. The number of rats was the same as the number of towns belonging to the Philistine kings. These towns included strong, walled cities and country villages. The large rock on which they put the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord is still there. It is in the field of Joshua of Beth Shemesh.
19 But some of the men of Beth Shemesh looked into the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord. So God killed 70 of them. The people of Beth Shemesh cried because the Lord had punished them so terribly. 20 They said, “Who can stand before the Lord, this holy God? Where can the Ark of the Covenant go from here?”
21 Then they sent messengers to the people of Kiriath Jearim. The messengers said, “The Philistines have brought back the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord. Come down and take it to your city.”

6 When the ark of the Lord had been in Philistine territory seven months, 2 the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners(A) and said, “What shall we do with the ark of the Lord? Tell us how we should send it back to its place.”
3 They answered, “If you return the ark of the god of Israel, do not send it back to him without a gift;(B) by all means send a guilt offering(C) to him. Then you will be healed, and you will know why his hand(D) has not been lifted from you.”
4 The Philistines asked, “What guilt offering should we send to him?”
They replied, “Five gold tumors and five gold rats, according to the number(E) of the Philistine rulers, because the same plague(F) has struck both you and your rulers. 5 Make models of the tumors(G) and of the rats that are destroying the country, and give glory(H) to Israel’s god. Perhaps he will lift his hand from you and your gods and your land. 6 Why do you harden(I) your hearts as the Egyptians and Pharaoh did? When Israel’s god dealt harshly with them,(J) did they(K) not send the Israelites out so they could go on their way?
7 “Now then, get a new cart(L) ready, with two cows that have calved and have never been yoked.(M) Hitch the cows to the cart, but take their calves away and pen them up. 8 Take the ark of the Lord and put it on the cart, and in a chest beside it put the gold objects you are sending back to him as a guilt offering. Send it on its way, 9 but keep watching it. If it goes up to its own territory, toward Beth Shemesh,(N) then the Lord has brought this great disaster on us. But if it does not, then we will know that it was not his hand that struck us but that it happened to us by chance.”
10 So they did this. They took two such cows and hitched them to the cart and penned up their calves. 11 They placed the ark of the Lord on the cart and along with it the chest containing the gold rats and the models of the tumors. 12 Then the cows went straight up toward Beth Shemesh, keeping on the road and lowing all the way; they did not turn to the right or to the left. The rulers of the Philistines followed them as far as the border of Beth Shemesh.
13 Now the people of Beth Shemesh were harvesting their wheat(O) in the valley, and when they looked up and saw the ark, they rejoiced at the sight. 14 The cart came to the field of Joshua of Beth Shemesh, and there it stopped beside a large rock. The people chopped up the wood of the cart and sacrificed the cows as a burnt offering(P) to the Lord. 15 The Levites(Q) took down the ark of the Lord, together with the chest containing the gold objects, and placed them on the large rock.(R) On that day the people of Beth Shemesh(S) offered burnt offerings and made sacrifices to the Lord. 16 The five rulers of the Philistines saw all this and then returned that same day to Ekron.
17 These are the gold tumors the Philistines sent as a guilt offering to the Lord—one each(T) for Ashdod, Gaza, Ashkelon, Gath and Ekron. 18 And the number of the gold rats was according to the number of Philistine towns belonging to the five rulers—the fortified towns with their country villages. The large rock on which the Levites set the ark of the Lord is a witness to this day in the field of Joshua of Beth Shemesh.
19 But God struck down(U) some of the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh, putting seventy[a] of them to death because they looked(V) into the ark of the Lord. The people mourned because of the heavy blow the Lord had dealt them. 20 And the people of Beth Shemesh asked, “Who can stand(W) in the presence of the Lord, this holy(X) God? To whom will the ark go up from here?”
21 Then they sent messengers to the people of Kiriath Jearim,(Y) saying, “The Philistines have returned the ark of the Lord. Come down and take it up to your town.”
