On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters,(A) but to Hannah he gave a double portion[a] because he loved her, though the Lord had closed her womb.(B) Her rival used to provoke her severely, to irritate her, because the Lord had closed her womb.(C) So it went on year by year; as often as she went up to the house of the Lord, she used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat. Her husband Elkanah said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? Why do you not eat? Why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?”(D)

After they had eaten and drunk at Shiloh, Hannah rose and presented herself before the Lord.[b] Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the Lord.(E) 10 She was deeply distressed and prayed to the Lord and wept bitterly. 11 She made this vow: “O Lord of hosts, if only you will look on the misery of your servant and remember me and not forget your servant but will give to your servant a male child, then I will set him before you as a nazirite until the day of his death. He shall drink neither wine nor intoxicants,[c] and no razor shall touch his head.”(F)

12 As she continued praying before the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. 13 Hannah was praying silently; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard; therefore Eli thought she was drunk.(G) 14 So Eli said to her, “How long will you make a drunken spectacle of yourself? Put away your wine.”(H) 15 But Hannah answered, “No, my lord, I am a woman deeply troubled; I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the Lord.(I) 16 Do not regard your servant as a worthless woman, for I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation all this time.” 17 Then Eli answered, “Go in peace; the God of Israel grant the petition you have made to him.”(J) 18 And she said, “Let your servant find favor in your sight.” Then the woman went her way and ate and drank with her husband,[d] and her countenance was sad no longer.[e](K)

19 They rose early in the morning and worshiped before the Lord; then they went back to their house at Ramah. Elkanah knew his wife Hannah, and the Lord remembered her.(L) 20 In due time Hannah conceived and bore a son. She named him Samuel, for she said, “I have asked him of the Lord.”(M)

Whenever the day came for Elkanah to sacrifice,(A) he would give portions of the meat to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters.(B) But to Hannah he gave a double portion(C) because he loved her, and the Lord had closed her womb.(D) Because the Lord had closed Hannah’s womb, her rival kept provoking her in order to irritate her.(E) This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the Lord, her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat.(F) Her husband Elkanah would say to her, “Hannah, why are you weeping? Why don’t you eat? Why are you downhearted? Don’t I mean more to you than ten sons?(G)

Once when they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh, Hannah stood up. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his chair by the doorpost of the Lord’s house.(H) 10 In her deep anguish(I) Hannah prayed to the Lord, weeping bitterly. 11 And she made a vow,(J) saying, “Lord Almighty(K), if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember(L) me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life,(M) and no razor(N) will ever be used on his head.”

12 As she kept on praying to the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. 13 Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard. Eli thought she was drunk 14 and said to her, “How long are you going to stay drunk? Put away your wine.”

15 “Not so, my lord,” Hannah replied, “I am a woman who is deeply troubled.(O) I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring(P) out my soul to the Lord. 16 Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief.”(Q)

17 Eli answered, “Go in peace,(R) and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him.(S)

18 She said, “May your servant find favor in your eyes.(T)” Then she went her way and ate something, and her face was no longer downcast.(U)

19 Early the next morning they arose and worshiped before the Lord and then went back to their home at Ramah.(V) Elkanah made love to his wife Hannah, and the Lord remembered(W) her. 20 So in the course of time Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son.(X) She named(Y) him Samuel,[a](Z) saying, “Because I asked the Lord for him.”

  1. 1 Samuel 1:20 Samuel sounds like the Hebrew for heard by God.

11 And every priest stands day after day at his service, offering again and again the same sacrifices that can never take away sins.(A) 12 But when Christ[a] had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, “he sat down at the right hand of God,” 13 and since then has been waiting “until his enemies would be made a footstool for his feet.”(B) 14 For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. 15 And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us, for after saying,

16 “This is the covenant that I will make with them
after those days, says the Lord:
I will put my laws in their hearts,
and I will write them on their minds,”(C)

17 and he adds,

“I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.”

18 Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.

A Call to Persevere

19 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus,(D) 20 by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh),(E) 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God,(F) 22 let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.(G) 23 Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful.(H) 24 And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.(I)

11 Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices,(A) which can never take away sins.(B) 12 But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins,(C) he sat down at the right hand of God,(D) 13 and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool.(E) 14 For by one sacrifice he has made perfect(F) forever those who are being made holy.(G)

15 The Holy Spirit also testifies(H) to us about this. First he says:

16 “This is the covenant I will make with them
after that time, says the Lord.
I will put my laws in their hearts,
and I will write them on their minds.”[a](I)

17 Then he adds:

“Their sins and lawless acts
    I will remember no more.”[b](J)

18 And where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary.

A Call to Persevere in Faith

19 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence(K) to enter the Most Holy Place(L) by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way(M) opened for us through the curtain,(N) that is, his body, 21 and since we have a great priest(O) over the house of God,(P) 22 let us draw near to God(Q) with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings,(R) having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience(S) and having our bodies washed with pure water.(T) 23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope(U) we profess,(V) for he who promised is faithful.(W) 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds,(X) 25 not giving up meeting together,(Y) as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another(Z)—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.(AA)

The Destruction of the Temple Foretold

13 As he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher, what large stones and what large buildings!” Then Jesus asked him, “Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down.”(A)

When he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately,(B) “Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign that all these things are about to be accomplished?” Then Jesus began to say to them, “Beware that no one leads you astray.(C) Many will come in my name and say, ‘I am he!’[a] and they will lead many astray.(D) When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still to come. For nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. This is but the beginning of the birth pangs.

The Destruction of the Temple and Signs of the End Times(A)

13 As Jesus was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher! What massive stones! What magnificent buildings!”

“Do you see all these great buildings?” replied Jesus. “Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.”(B)

As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives(C) opposite the temple, Peter, James, John(D) and Andrew asked him privately, “Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?”

Jesus said to them: “Watch out that no one deceives you.(E) Many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and will deceive many. When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains.
