»Nächstes Jahr wirst du einen Sohn haben«
18 Abraham wohnte bei den Eichen von Mamre, da erschien ihm der Herr wieder. Es war um die heißeste Zeit des Tages, und Abraham saß gerade am Eingang seines Zeltes. 2 Als er aufblickte, bemerkte er plötzlich drei Männer, die ganz in der Nähe standen. Sofort sprang er auf, lief zu ihnen hinüber, verneigte sich bis zur Erde und bat: 3-5 »Herr[a], bitte schenk mir deine Aufmerksamkeit und geh nicht einfach weiter! Ich lasse Wasser holen für eure Füße, ruht euch solange unter dem Baum aus; ich sorge für das Essen, damit ihr gestärkt weitergehen könnt! Ihr sollt nicht umsonst bei mir vorbeigekommen sein!« »Einverstanden«, sagten die drei, »tu, was du dir vorgenommen hast!«
6 Abraham lief ins Zelt zurück und rief Sara zu: »Schnell! Nimm 15 Kilo vom besten Mehl, das wir haben, rühr einen Teig an und backe Fladenbrote!« 7 Er lief weiter zu seiner Rinderherde, wählte ein zartes, gesundes Kalb aus und befahl seinem Knecht, es so schnell wie möglich zuzubereiten. 8 Den fertigen Braten bot er dann seinen Gästen mit Sauerrahm und Milch an. Sie saßen im Schatten des Baums, und während sie aßen, stand Abraham daneben und bediente sie.
9 »Wo ist denn deine Frau Sara?«, fragten sie ihn. »Hier im Zelt«, antwortete Abraham. 10 Da sagte einer der Männer: »Glaub mir, nächstes Jahr um diese Zeit komme ich wieder zu euch, und dann wird Sara einen Sohn haben.«
Sara stand hinter ihnen im Zelteingang und lauschte. 11-12 Sie lachte heimlich. Denn Abraham und sie waren beide hochbetagt, und Sara konnte gar keine Kinder mehr bekommen. Darum dachte sie: »Ich bin alt und verbraucht, und meinem Mann geht es genauso. Wir werden uns wohl nie mehr über ein Kind freuen können. Nein, die Zeiten sind längst vorbei!«
13 Da sagte der Herr zu Abraham: »Warum lacht Sara? Warum zweifelt sie an meinen Worten, dass sie noch ein Kind bekommen wird? 14 Für mich ist nichts unmöglich! Nächstes Jahr um diese Zeit komme ich wieder zu euch – dann wird Sara einen Sohn haben.« 15 Sara fürchtete sich und log: »Ich habe nicht gelacht!« Aber Gott erwiderte ihr: »Doch, du hast gelacht!«
Abraham bittet für Sodom und Gomorra
16 Danach brachen die drei auf, und Abraham begleitete sie noch ein Stück. Als sie auf die Stadt Sodom hinabblickten, 17 fragte sich der Herr: »Soll ich wirklich vor Abraham verbergen, was ich mit Sodom und Gomorra vorhabe? 18 Nein, ich will es ihm nicht vorenthalten, schließlich wird er durch mich zum Stammvater eines großen und mächtigen Volkes. Und nicht nur das, alle Völker der Erde sollen durch ihn am Segen teilhaben. 19 Ich selbst habe ihn dazu auserwählt, dass er auch seine Familie und seine Nachkommen so zu leben lehrt, wie es mir gefällt. Sie sollen das Recht achten und Gerechtigkeit üben, damit ich meine Zusage einlösen kann, die ich Abraham gegeben habe.«
20 Darum sagte der Herr zu Abraham: »Die Klagen über die Menschen von Sodom und Gomorra nehmen kein Ende; ihre Schuld schreit zum Himmel! 21 Ich gehe jetzt dorthin, um selbst nachzusehen. Ich will wissen, ob die Vorwürfe stimmen und die Leute es wirklich so schlimm treiben, wie ich gehört habe.«
22 Die beiden Begleiter gingen weiter in Richtung Sodom, nur der Herr blieb noch mit Abraham zurück. 23 Abraham trat näher heran und fragte: »Willst du wirklich rechtschaffene und gottlose Menschen zusammen vernichten? 24 Vielleicht findest du ja fünfzig Leute in der Stadt, die nichts Böses getan haben und dir dienen. Willst du die Stadt nicht um ihretwillen verschonen? 25 Lass nicht zu, dass der Schuldlose genauso sterben muss wie der Schuldige! Es wäre nicht recht, beide gleich zu behandeln. Du bist der Richter der ganzen Welt und kannst doch nicht gegen die Gerechtigkeit verstoßen!«
26 Da erwiderte der Herr: »Wenn ich in Sodom fünfzig Menschen finde, die so leben, wie es mir gefällt, werde ich um ihretwillen den ganzen Ort verschonen.«
27 Abraham aber ließ nicht locker: »Ich habe es nun einmal gewagt, mich einzumischen, obwohl ich nur ein vergänglicher Mensch bin, nicht viel mehr als Staub und Asche. 28 Angenommen, es gibt bloß fünfundvierzig Menschen, die kein Unrecht getan haben. Willst du wegen der fehlenden fünf die ganze Stadt zerstören?« »Nein«, bekam er zur Antwort, »wenn ich fünfundvierzig finde, verschone ich die Stadt.«
29 Abraham tastete sich noch weiter vor: »Und wenn es nur vierzig sind?« Gott versprach: »Auch dann vernichte ich die Stadt nicht.«
30 »Bitte werde nicht zornig, wenn ich weiterrede«, bat Abraham, »vielleicht gibt es nur dreißig dort?« »Selbst dann werde ich es nicht tun.«
31 Abraham setzte zum fünften Mal an: »Ich habe es nun einmal gewagt, Herr, mich einzumischen! Angenommen, es sind nur zwanzig?« Gott antwortete: »Dann werde ich die Stadt trotzdem verschonen.«
32 »Mein Herr«, sagte Abraham, »bitte werde nicht zornig, wenn ich zum Schluss noch einmal spreche: Was wirst du tun, wenn dort nur zehn unschuldige Menschen wohnen?« Wieder versprach Gott ihm: »Die zehn werden verschont bleiben und ebenso die ganze Stadt.«
33 Nachdem er dies gesagt hatte, ging er weiter, und Abraham kehrte zu seinem Zelt zurück.

2 At itiningin ang kaniyang mga mata at nagmalas, at, narito't tatlong lalake ay nakatayo sa tabi niya: at pagkakita niya sa kanila, ay tinakbo niya upang sila'y salubungin mula sa pintuan ng tolda, at yumukod siya sa lupa.
3 At nagsabi, Panginoon ko, kung ngayo'y nakasumpong ako ng biyaya sa iyong paningin, ay ipinamamanhik ko sa iyo, na huwag mong lagpasan ang iyong lingkod.
4 Itulot mong dalhan kayo rito ng kaunting tubig, at maghugas kayo ng inyong mga paa, at mangagpahinga kayo sa lilim ng kahoy.
5 At magdadala ako ng isang subong tinapay at inyong palakasin ang inyong puso; at pagkatapos ay magsisipagtuloy kayo: yamang kayo'y naparito sa inyong lingkod, At nagsipagsabi, Mangyari ang ayon sa iyong sinabi.
6 At si Abraham ay nagmadaling napasa tolda ni Sara, at sinabi, Maghanda ka agad ng tatlong takal ng mainam na harina, iyong tapayin at gawin mong mga munting tinapay.
7 At tumakbo si Abraham sa bakahan at nagdala ng isang bata at mabuting guya, at ibinigay sa alipin; at siya'y nagmadali, upang lutuin.
8 At siya'y kumuha ng mantekilla, at ng gatas, at ng guyang niluto niya, at inihain sa harapan nila; at siya'y tumayo sa siping nila sa lilim ng punong kahoy; at sila'y nagsikain.
9 At sinabi nila sa kaniya, Saan naroon si Sara na iyong asawa? At sinabi niya Narito, nasa tolda.
10 At sinabi niya, Walang salang di ako babalik sa iyo sa ganitong panahon ng taong darating; at narito't si Sara na iyong asawa ay magkakaanak ng isang lalake. At narinig ni Sara sa pintuan ng tolda, na nasa likod niya.
11 Si Abraham at si Sara nga'y matatanda na, at lipas na sa panahon; at tinigilan na si Sara ng kaugalian ng mga babae.
12 At nagtawa si Sara sa kaniyang sarili, na sinasabi, Pagkatapos na ako'y tumanda ay magtatamo ako ng kaligayahan, at matanda na rin pati ng panginoon ko?
13 At sinabi ng Panginoon kay Abraham, Bakit tumawa si Sara, na sinasabi, Tunay kayang ako'y manganganak, na matanda na ako?
14 May anomang bagay kayang napakahirap sa Panginoon? Sa tadhanang panahon ay babalik ako sa iyo, sa taong darating, at si Sara ay magkakaanak ng isang lalake.
15 Nang magkagayo'y nagkaila si Sara, na sinasabi, Hindi ako tumawa, sapagka't siya'y natakot. Nguni't sinabi niya, Hindi gayon; kundi ikaw ay tumawa.
16 At nangagtindig doon ang mga lalake, at nangagsitingin sa dakong Sodoma; at sinamahan sila ni Abraham, upang ihatid sila sa daan.
17 At sinabi ng Panginoon, Ililihim ko ba kay Abraham ang aking gagawin;
18 Dangang si Abraham ay tunay na magiging isang bansang malaki at matibay, at pagpapalain sa kaniya ang lahat ng bansa sa lupa?
19 Sapagka't siya'y aking kinilala, upang siya'y magutos sa kaniyang mga anak at sa kaniyang sangbahayan pagkamatay niya, na maingatan nila ang daan ng Panginoon, na gumawa ng kabanalan, at kahatulan; upang padatnin ng Panginoon, kay Abraham ang kaniyang ipinangako tungkol sa kaniya.
20 At sinabi ng Panginoon, Sapagka't ang sigaw ng Sodoma at Gomorra ay malakas, at sapagka't ang kasalanan nila ay napakalubha;
21 Ay bababa ako ngayon at titingnan ko kung ginawa nga ang ayon sa sigaw na dumarating hanggang sa akin; at kung hindi ay aking malalaman.
22 At ang mga lalake ay nagsilayo roon at nagsitungo sa Sodoma datapuwa't si Abraham ay nakatayo pa sa harapan ng Panginoon.
23 At lumapit si Abraham, at nagsabi, Ang mga banal ba ay iyong lilipuling kasama ng mga masama?
24 Kung sakaling may limang pung banal sa loob ng bayan: lilipulin mo ba, at di mo patatawarin ang dakong yaon, alangalang sa limang pung banal na nasa loob niyaon?
25 Malayo nawa sa iyo ang paggawa ng ganito, na ang banal ay iyong pataying kasama ng masama, anopa't ang banal ay mapara sa masama; malayo nawa ito sa iyo: di ba gagawa ng matuwid ang Hukom ng buong lupa?
26 At sinabi ng Panginoon, Kung makasumpong ako sa Sodoma ng limang pung banal sa loob ng bayan, patatawarin ko ang buong dakong yaon, alangalang sa kanila.
27 At sumagot si Abraham, at nagsabi, Narito, ngayo'y nangahas akong magsalita sa Panginoon, akong alabok at abo lamang:
28 Kung sakaling magkukulang ng lima sa limang pung banal: lilipulin mo ba, dahil sa limang kulang, ang buong bayan? At sinabi niya, Hindi ko lilipulin kung makasumpong ako roon ng apat na pu't lima.
29 At siya'y muling nagsalita pa sa kaniya, at nagsabi, Marahil ay may masusumpungang apat na pu. At sinabi niya, Hindi ko gagawin, alangalang sa apat na pu.
30 At sinabi niya, Oh huwag magalit ang Panginoon, at ako'y magsasalita: kung sakaling may masusumpungan doong tatlong pu. At sinabi niya, Hindi ko gagawin kung makakasumpong ako roon ng tatlong pu.
31 At kaniyang sinabi, Narito ngayon, ako'y nangahas na magsalita sa Panginoon: kung sakaling may masusumpungan doong dalawang pu. At sinabi niya, Hindi ko lilipulin, alangalang sa dalawang pu.
32 At sinabi niya, Oh huwag magalit ang Panginoon at magsasalita na lamang akong minsan: kung sakaling may masusumpungan doong sangpu: at sinabi niya, Hindi ko lilipulin, alangalang sa sangpu.
33 At ang Panginoon ay nagpatuloy, pagkatapos na makipagusap kay Abraham: at si Abraham ay nagbalik sa kaniyang dako.

18 The Lord appeared again to Abraham while he was living in the oak grove at Mamre. This is the way it happened: One hot summer afternoon as he was sitting in the opening of his tent, 2 he suddenly noticed three men coming toward him. He sprang up and ran to meet them and welcomed them.
3-4 “Sirs,” he said, “please don’t go any farther. Stop awhile and rest here in the shade of this tree while I get water to refresh your feet, 5 and a bite to eat to strengthen you. Do stay awhile before continuing your journey.”
“All right,” they said, “do as you have said.”
6 Then Abraham ran back to the tent and said to Sarah, “Quick! Mix up some pancakes![a] Use your best flour, and make enough for the three of them!” 7 Then he ran out to the herd and selected a fat calf and told a servant to hurry and butcher it. 8 Soon, taking them cheese and milk and the roast veal, he set it before the men and stood beneath the trees beside them as they ate.
9 “Where is Sarah, your wife?” they asked him.
“In the tent,” Abraham replied.
10 Then the Lord said, “Next year[b] I will give you and Sarah a son!” (Sarah was listening from the tent door behind him.) 11 Now Abraham and Sarah were both very old, and Sarah was long since past the time when she could have a baby.
12 So Sarah laughed silently. “A woman my age have a baby?” she scoffed to herself. “And with a husband as old as mine?”
13 Then God said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh? Why did she say ‘Can an old woman like me have a baby?’ 14 Is anything too hard for God? Next year, just as I told you, I will certainly see to it that Sarah has a son.”
15 But Sarah denied it. “I didn’t laugh,” she lied, for she was afraid.
16 Then the men stood up from their meal and started on toward Sodom; and Abraham went with them part of the way.
17 “Should I hide my plan from Abraham?” God asked. 18 “For Abraham shall become a mighty nation, and he will be a source of blessing for all the nations of the earth. 19 And I have picked him out to have godly descendants and a godly household—men who are just and good—so that I can do for him all I have promised.”
20 So the Lord told Abraham, “I have heard that the people of Sodom and Gomorrah are utterly evil, and that everything they do is wicked. 21 I am going down to see whether these reports are true or not. Then I will know.”
22-23 So the other two went on toward Sodom, but the Lord remained with Abraham a while. Then Abraham approached him and said, “Will you kill good and bad alike? 24 Suppose you find fifty godly people there within the city—will you destroy it, and not spare it for their sakes? 25 That wouldn’t be right! Surely you wouldn’t do such a thing, to kill the godly with the wicked! Why, you would be treating godly and wicked exactly the same! Surely you wouldn’t do that! Should not the Judge of all the earth be fair?”
26 And God replied, “If I find fifty godly people there, I will spare the entire city for their sake.”
27 Then Abraham spoke again. “Since I have begun, let me go on and speak further to the Lord, though I am but dust and ashes. 28 Suppose there are only forty-five? Will you destroy the city for lack of five?”
And God said, “I will not destroy it if I find forty-five.”
29 Then Abraham went further with his request. “Suppose there are only forty?”
And God replied, “I won’t destroy it if there are forty.”
30 “Please don’t be angry,” Abraham pleaded. “Let me speak: suppose only thirty are found there?”
And God replied, “I won’t do it if there are thirty there.”
31 Then Abraham said, “Since I have dared to speak to God, let me continue—suppose there are only twenty?”
And God said, “Then I won’t destroy it for the sake of the twenty.”
32 Finally, Abraham said, “Oh, let not the Lord be angry; I will speak but this once more! Suppose only ten are found?”
And God said, “Then, for the sake of the ten, I won’t destroy it.”
33 And the Lord went on his way when he had finished his conversation with Abraham. And Abraham returned to his tent.

The Three Visitors
18 The Lord appeared to Abraham(A) near the great trees of Mamre(B) while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent(C) in the heat of the day. 2 Abraham looked up(D) and saw three men(E) standing nearby. When he saw them, he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground.(F)
3 He said, “If I have found favor in your eyes,(G) my lord,[a] do not pass your servant(H) by. 4 Let a little water be brought, and then you may all wash your feet(I) and rest under this tree. 5 Let me get you something to eat,(J) so you can be refreshed and then go on your way—now that you have come to your servant.”
“Very well,” they answered, “do as you say.”
6 So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah. “Quick,” he said, “get three seahs[b] of the finest flour and knead it and bake some bread.”(K)
7 Then he ran to the herd and selected a choice, tender calf(L) and gave it to a servant, who hurried to prepare it. 8 He then brought some curds(M) and milk(N) and the calf that had been prepared, and set these before them.(O) While they ate, he stood near them under a tree.
9 “Where is your wife Sarah?”(P) they asked him.
“There, in the tent,(Q)” he said.
10 Then one of them said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year,(R) and Sarah your wife will have a son.”(S)
Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, which was behind him. 11 Abraham and Sarah were already very old,(T) and Sarah was past the age of childbearing.(U) 12 So Sarah laughed(V) to herself as she thought, “After I am worn out and my lord(W) is old, will I now have this pleasure?”
13 Then the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really have a child, now that I am old?’(X) 14 Is anything too hard for the Lord?(Y) I will return to you at the appointed time next year,(Z) and Sarah will have a son.”(AA)
15 Sarah was afraid, so she lied and said, “I did not laugh.”
But he said, “Yes, you did laugh.”
Abraham Pleads for Sodom
16 When the men(AB) got up to leave, they looked down toward Sodom, and Abraham walked along with them to see them on their way. 17 Then the Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham(AC) what I am about to do?(AD) 18 Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation,(AE) and all nations on earth will be blessed through him.[c] 19 For I have chosen him(AF), so that he will direct his children(AG) and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord(AH) by doing what is right and just,(AI) so that the Lord will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.”(AJ)
20 Then the Lord said, “The outcry against Sodom(AK) and Gomorrah is so great(AL) and their sin so grievous(AM) 21 that I will go down(AN) and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me. If not, I will know.”
22 The men(AO) turned away and went toward Sodom,(AP) but Abraham remained standing before the Lord.[d](AQ) 23 Then Abraham approached him and said: “Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked?(AR) 24 What if there are fifty righteous people in the city? Will you really sweep it away and not spare[e] the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it?(AS) 25 Far be it from you to do such a thing(AT)—to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous(AU) and the wicked alike.(AV) Far be it from you! Will not the Judge(AW) of all the earth do right?”(AX)
26 The Lord said, “If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake.(AY)”
27 Then Abraham spoke up again: “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, though I am nothing but dust and ashes,(AZ) 28 what if the number of the righteous is five less than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five people?”
“If I find forty-five there,” he said, “I will not destroy it.”
29 Once again he spoke to him, “What if only forty are found there?”
He said, “For the sake of forty, I will not do it.”
30 Then he said, “May the Lord not be angry,(BA) but let me speak. What if only thirty can be found there?”
He answered, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”
31 Abraham said, “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, what if only twenty can be found there?”
He said, “For the sake of twenty, I will not destroy it.”
32 Then he said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more.(BB) What if only ten can be found there?”
He answered, “For the sake of ten,(BC) I will not destroy it.”
33 When the Lord had finished speaking(BD) with Abraham, he left,(BE) and Abraham returned home.(BF)
