33 (A)After this event Jeroboam did not turn from his evil way, but again he made priests from every class of people for the high places; whoever wished, he consecrated him, and he became one of the priests of the high places. 34 (B)And this thing was the sin of the house of Jeroboam, so as (C)to exterminate and destroy it from the face of the earth.

Judgment on the House of Jeroboam

14 At that time Abijah the son of Jeroboam became sick. And Jeroboam said to his wife, “Please arise, and disguise yourself, that they may not recognize you as the wife of Jeroboam, and go to Shiloh. Indeed, Ahijah the prophet is there, who told me that (D)I would be king over this people. (E)Also take [a]with you ten loaves, some cakes, and a jar of honey, and go to him; he will tell you what will become of the child.” And Jeroboam’s wife did so; she arose (F)and went to Shiloh, and came to the house of Ahijah. But Ahijah could not see, for his eyes were [b]glazed by reason of his age.

Now the Lord had said to Ahijah, “Here is the wife of Jeroboam, coming to ask you something about her son, for he is sick. Thus and thus you shall say to her; for it will be, when she comes in, that she will pretend to be another woman.

And so it was, when Ahijah heard the sound of her footsteps as she came through the door, he said, “Come in, wife of Jeroboam. Why do you pretend to be another person? For I have been sent to you with bad news. Go, tell Jeroboam, ‘Thus says the Lord God of Israel: (G)“Because I exalted you from among the people, and made you ruler over My people Israel, and (H)tore the kingdom away from the house of David, and gave it to you; and yet you have not been as My servant David, (I)who kept My commandments and who followed Me with all his heart, to do only what was right in My eyes; but you have done more evil than all who were before you, (J)for you have gone and made for yourself other gods and molded images to provoke Me to anger, and (K)have cast Me behind your back— 10 therefore behold! (L)I will bring disaster on the house of Jeroboam, and (M)will cut off from Jeroboam every male in Israel, (N)bond and free; I will take away the remnant of the house of Jeroboam, as one takes away refuse until it is all gone. 11 The dogs shall eat (O)whoever belongs to Jeroboam and dies in the city, and the birds of the air shall eat whoever dies in the field; for the Lord has spoken!” ’ 12 Arise therefore, go to your own house. (P)When your feet enter the city, the child shall die. 13 And all Israel shall mourn for him and bury him, for he is the only one of Jeroboam who shall [c]come to the grave, because in him (Q)there is found something good toward the Lord God of Israel in the house of Jeroboam.

14 (R)“Moreover the Lord will raise up for Himself a king over Israel who shall cut off the house of Jeroboam; [d]this is the day. What? Even now! 15 For the Lord will strike Israel, as a reed is shaken in the water. He will (S)uproot Israel from this (T)good land which He gave to their fathers, and will scatter them (U)beyond [e]the River, (V)because they have made their [f]wooden images, provoking the Lord to anger. 16 And He will give Israel up because of the sins of Jeroboam, (W)who sinned and who made Israel sin.”

17 Then Jeroboam’s wife arose and departed, and came to (X)Tirzah. (Y)When she came to the threshold of the house, the child died. 18 And they buried him; and all Israel mourned for him, (Z)according to the word of the Lord which He spoke through His servant Ahijah the prophet.

Death of Jeroboam

19 Now the rest of the acts of Jeroboam, how he (AA)made war and how he reigned, indeed they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel. 20 The period that Jeroboam reigned was twenty-two years. So he rested with his fathers. Then (AB)Nadab his son reigned in his place.

33 After this thing Jeroboam hath not turned from his evil way, and turneth back, and maketh of the extremities of the people priests of high places; he who is desirous he consecrateth his hand, and he is of the priests of the high places.

34 And in this thing is the sin of the house of Jeroboam, even to cut [it] off, and to destroy [it] from off the face of the ground.

14 At that time was Abijah son of Jeroboam sick,

and Jeroboam saith to his wife, `Rise, I pray thee, and change thyself, and they know not that thou [art] wife of Jeroboam, and thou hast gone to Shiloh; lo, there [is] Ahijah the prophet; he spake unto me of [being] king over this people;

and thou hast taken in thy hand ten loaves, and crumbs, and a bottle of honey, and hast gone in unto him; he doth declare to thee what becometh of the youth.'

And the wife of Jeroboam doth so, and riseth, and goeth to Shiloh, and entereth the house of Ahijah, and Ahijah is not able to see, for his eyes have stood because of his age.

And Jehovah said unto Ahijah, `Lo, the wife of Jeroboam is coming to seek a word from thee concerning her son, for he is sick; thus and thus thou dost speak unto her, and it cometh to pass at her coming in, that she is making herself strange.'

And it cometh to pass, at Ahijah's hearing the sound of her feet [as] she came in to the opening, that he saith, `Come in, wife of Jeroboam, why is this -- thou art making thyself strange? and I am sent unto thee [with] a sharp thing:

Go, say to Jeroboam, Thus said Jehovah, God of Israel, Because that I have made thee high out of the midst of the people, and appoint thee leader over my people Israel,

and rend the kingdom from the house of David, and give it to thee, -- and thou hast not been as My servant David who kept My commands, and who walked after Me with all his heart, to do only that which [is] right in Mine eyes,

and thou dost evil above all who have been before thee, and goest, and makest to thee other gods and molten images to provoke Me to anger, and Me thou hast cast behind thy back:

10 `Therefore, lo, I am bringing in evil unto the house of Jeroboam, and have cut off to Jeroboam those sitting on the wall -- shut up and left -- in Israel, and have put away the posterity of the house of Jeroboam, as one putteth away the dung till its consumption;

11 him who dieth of Jeroboam in a city do the dogs eat, and him who dieth in a field do fowl of the heavens eat, for Jehovah hath spoken.

12 `And thou, rise, go to thy house; in the going in of thy feet to the city -- hath the lad died;

13 and all Israel have mourned for him, and buried him, for this one -- by himself -- cometh of Jeroboam unto a grave, because there hath been found in him a good thing towards Jehovah, God of Israel, in the house of Jeroboam.

14 `And Jehovah hath raised up for Him a king over Israel who cutteth off the house of Jeroboam this day -- and what? -- even now!

15 And Jehovah hath smitten Israel as the reed is moved by the waters, and hath plucked Israel from off this good ground that He gave to their fathers, and scattered them beyond the River, because that they made their shrines, provoking Jehovah to anger;

16 and He giveth up Israel because of the sins of Jeroboam that he sinned, and that he caused Israel to sin.'

17 And the wife of Jeroboam riseth, and goeth, and cometh to Tirzah; she hath come in to the threshold of the house, and the youth dieth;

18 and they bury him, and mourn for him do all Israel, according to the word of Jehovah, that he spake by the hand of His servant Ahijah the prophet.

19 And the rest of the matters of Jeroboam, how he fought, and how he reigned, lo, they are written on the book of the Chronicles of the kings of Israel.

20 And the days that Jeroboam reigned [are] twenty and two years, and he lieth with his fathers, and reign doth Nadab his son in his stead.

33 After this event, Jeroboam did not [a]abandon his evil way, but he (A)again [b]appointed priests of the high places from [c]all the people; (B)anyone who wanted, he ordained, and he became [d]one of the priests of the high places. 34 [e](C)This event also became a sin of the house of Jeroboam, (D)even to wipe it out and eliminate it from the face of the earth.

Ahijah Prophesies against the King

14 At that time Abijah the son of Jeroboam became sick. And Jeroboam said to his wife, “Now arise and (E)disguise yourself so that they will not know that you are the wife of Jeroboam, and go to (F)Shiloh. Behold, Ahijah the prophet is there, who (G)said regarding me that I would be king over this people. (H)Take ten loaves with you, some pastries, and a jar of honey, and go to him. He will tell you what will happen to the boy.”

And Jeroboam’s wife did so, and set out and went to (I)Shiloh, and came to the house of (J)Ahijah. Now Ahijah could not see (K)because his eyes were [f]glossy from his old age. Now the Lord had said to Ahijah, “Behold, the wife of Jeroboam is coming to [g]inquire of you about her son, because he is sick. You shall say such and such to her, for it will be when she arrives, that (L)she is going to make herself unrecognizable.”

So when Ahijah heard the sound of her feet coming in the doorway, he said, “Come in, wife of Jeroboam; why do you make yourself unrecognizable? Nevertheless, I am sent to you with a harsh message. Go, say to Jeroboam, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of Israel says: “(M)Because I exalted you from among the people and made you leader over My people Israel, and (N)tore the kingdom away from the house of David and gave it to you—(O)yet you have not been like My servant David, who kept My commandments and followed Me with all his heart, (P)to do only that which was right in My sight; you also have done more evil than all who were before you, and (Q)you have gone and made for yourself other gods and (R)cast metal images to provoke Me to anger, and have (S)thrown Me behind your back— 10 therefore behold, I am bringing disaster on the house of Jeroboam, and (T)I will eliminate from Jeroboam [h]every male person, (U)both [i]bond and free in Israel, and I (V)will make a clean sweep of the house of Jeroboam, just as one sweeps away dung until it is all gone. 11 (W)Anyone belonging to Jeroboam who dies in the city, the dogs will eat. And anyone who dies in the field, the birds of the sky will eat; for the Lord has spoken it.”’ 12 Now you, arise, go to your house. (X)When your feet enter the city the child will die. 13 Then all Israel will mourn for him and bury him, for [j]he alone of Jeroboam’s family will come to the grave, because in him (Y)something good was found toward the Lord God of Israel in the house of Jeroboam. 14 Moreover, (Z)the Lord will raise up for Himself a king over Israel who will eliminate the house of Jeroboam this day [k]and from now on.

15 “For the Lord will strike Israel, just as a reed sways in the water; and (AA)He will uproot Israel from (AB)this good land which He gave to their fathers, and (AC)will scatter them beyond the Euphrates River, (AD)because they have made their [l]Asherim, provoking the Lord to anger. 16 He will give up Israel (AE)because of the sins of Jeroboam, which he [m]committed and with which he misled Israel into sin.”

17 Then Jeroboam’s wife arose and departed, and came to (AF)Tirzah. (AG)As she was entering the threshold of the house, the child died. 18 (AH)Then all Israel buried him and mourned for him, in accordance with the word of the Lord which He had spoken through His servant Ahijah the prophet.

19 Now as for the rest of the acts of Jeroboam, (AI)how he made war and how he reigned, behold, they are written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel. 20 And the time that Jeroboam reigned was twenty-two years; and he [n]lay down with his fathers, and his son Nadab reigned in his place.
