주께서 오실 때를 위해 준비해라
5 형제자매 여러분, 그때와 날짜에 대해서는 여러분에게 쓸 필요가 없습니다. 2 주님의 날은 마치 밤중에 오는 도둑처럼 온다는 것을 여러분이 잘 알기 때문입니다. 3 사람들이 “평화롭고 안전하다.” 고 말할 때에, 갑자기 멸망이 그들을 덮칠 것입니다. 그것은 마치 아기를 밴 여자가 아기를 낳을 때 찾아오는 고통과 같아서 피할 길이 없을 것입니다. 4 그러나 형제자매 여러분, 여러분은 어둠 속에 있지 않으니 이날이 도둑처럼 여러분을 덮치지는 않을 것입니다. 5 여러분은 모두 빛의 자녀들이고 낮의 자녀들이기 때문입니다. 우리는 밤이나 어둠에 속한 사람들이 아닙니다. 6 그러니 우리는 다른 사람들처럼 잠들지 말고, 깨어 있으면서 정신을 똑바로 차립시다. 7 잠자는 사람들도 밤에 잠을 자고, 술 취하는 사람들도 밤에 취합니다. 8 그러나 우리는 낮에 속한 사람들이니 정신을 똑바로 차립시다. 믿음과 사랑을 갑옷처럼 입고, 구원의 소망을 투구처럼 씁시다. 9 하나님께서는 우리에게 당신의 진노가 내리도록 정해 놓지 않으시고, 우리 주 예수 그리스도를 통하여 구원을 얻도록 정해 놓으셨습니다. 10 그리스도께서는 우리를 당신과 함께 살게 하시려고 우리를 위해 죽으셨습니다. 그분께서 오실 때에 우리가 살아 있느냐 죽어 있느냐는 문제가 되지 않습니다. 11 그러니 여러분은 지금 실제로 하고 있는 그대로 서로 용기를 주고 믿음을 북돋아 주십시오.
마지막 훈계와 인사
12 형제자매 여러분, 여러분에게 부탁합니다. 여러분 가운데서 힘써 일하는 사람들과, 주님 안에서 여러분을 지도하고 가르치는 사람들을 존경하십시오. 13 그들이 하는 일을 생각해서, 사랑하는 마음으로 그들을 극진히 받드십시오.
서로 평화롭게 사십시오. 14 형제자매 여러분, 여러분에게 당부합니다. 게으른 사람들에게 경고하고, 마음이 약한 사람에게 용기를 주고, 힘없는 사람을 도와주며, 모든 사람을 참을성 있게 대하십시오. 15 어느 누구도 결코 악을 악으로 갚지 않도록 두루 살피십시오. 오히려 언제나 서로에게, 그리고 모든 사람에게, 선한 일을 하려고 애쓰십시오.
16 언제나 기뻐하십시오. 17 끊임없이 기도하십시오. 18 어떤 처지에서든지 감사하십시오. 이것이 그리스도 예수 안에서 여러분에게 바라시는 하나님의 뜻입니다.
19 성령의 불을 끄지 마십시오. 20 예언자들의 말을 멸시하지 마십시오. 21 그것이 하나님께로부터 오는 것인지 아닌지 확인하기 위해 모든 것을 시험해 보십시오. 그리고 좋은 것을 굳게 지키십시오. 22 모든 악을 멀리하십시오.

The Day of the Lord
5 But concerning (A)the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I should write to you. 2 For you yourselves know perfectly that (B)the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. 3 For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then (C)sudden destruction comes upon them, (D)as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape. 4 (E)But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. 5 You are all (F)sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. 6 (G)Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but (H)let us watch and be [a]sober. 7 For (I)those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk (J)are drunk at night. 8 But let us who are of the day be sober, (K)putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation. 9 For (L)God did not appoint us to wrath, (M)but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 (N)who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him.
11 Therefore [b]comfort each other and [c]edify one another, just as you also are doing.
Various Exhortations
12 And we urge you, brethren, (O)to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and [d]admonish you, 13 and to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. (P)Be at peace among yourselves.
14 Now we [e]exhort you, brethren, (Q)warn those who are [f]unruly, (R)comfort the fainthearted, (S)uphold the weak, (T)be patient with all. 15 (U)See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always (V)pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all.
16 (W)Rejoice always, 17 (X)pray without ceasing, 18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
19 (Y)Do not quench the Spirit. 20 (Z)Do not despise prophecies. 21 (AA)Test all things; (AB)hold fast what is good. 22 Abstain from every form of evil.
Blessing and Admonition
23 Now may (AC)the God of peace Himself (AD)sanctify[g] you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body (AE)be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He who calls you is (AF)faithful, who also will (AG)do it.
25 Brethren, pray for us.
26 Greet all the brethren with a holy kiss.
27 I charge you by the Lord that this [h]epistle be read to all the [i]holy brethren.
28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.

The Day of the Lord
5 Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates(A) we do not need to write to you,(B) 2 for you know very well that the day of the Lord(C) will come like a thief in the night.(D) 3 While people are saying, “Peace and safety,”(E) destruction will come on them suddenly,(F) as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.(G)
4 But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness(H) so that this day should surprise you like a thief.(I) 5 You are all children of the light(J) and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. 6 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep,(K) but let us be awake(L) and sober.(M) 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night.(N) 8 But since we belong to the day,(O) let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate,(P) and the hope of salvation(Q) as a helmet.(R) 9 For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath(S) but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.(T) 10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him.(U) 11 Therefore encourage one another(V) and build each other up,(W) just as in fact you are doing.
Final Instructions
12 Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard(X) among you, who care for you in the Lord(Y) and who admonish you. 13 Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other.(Z) 14 And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle(AA) and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak,(AB) be patient with everyone. 15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong,(AC) but always strive to do what is good for each other(AD) and for everyone else.
16 Rejoice always,(AE) 17 pray continually,(AF) 18 give thanks in all circumstances;(AG) for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
19 Do not quench the Spirit.(AH) 20 Do not treat prophecies(AI) with contempt 21 but test them all;(AJ) hold on to what is good,(AK) 22 reject every kind of evil.
23 May God himself, the God of peace,(AL) sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul(AM) and body be kept blameless(AN) at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.(AO) 24 The one who calls(AP) you is faithful,(AQ) and he will do it.(AR)
25 Brothers and sisters, pray for us.(AS) 26 Greet all God’s people with a holy kiss.(AT) 27 I charge you before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers and sisters.(AU)
28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.(AV)
