耶稣基督的家谱
1 耶稣基督是亚伯拉罕的子孙、大卫的后裔，以下是祂的家谱：
2 亚伯拉罕生以撒，
以撒生雅各，
雅各生犹大和他的兄弟，
3 犹大和她玛生法勒斯和谢拉，
法勒斯生希斯仑[a]，
希斯仑生兰，
4 兰生亚米拿达，
亚米拿达生拿顺，
拿顺生撒门，
5 撒门和喇合生波阿斯，
波阿斯和路得生俄备得，
俄备得生耶西，
6 耶西生大卫王。
大卫和乌利亚的妻子生所罗门，
7 所罗门生罗波安，
罗波安生亚比雅，
亚比雅生亚撒，
8 亚撒生约沙法，
约沙法生约兰，
约兰生乌西雅，
9 乌西雅生约坦，
约坦生亚哈斯，
亚哈斯生希西迦，

那时以色列人被掳往巴比伦。
12 被掳到巴比伦以后，

约瑟就是玛丽亚的丈夫，
那被称为基督[b]的耶稣就是玛丽亚生的。
17 这样，从亚伯拉罕到大卫共有十四代，从大卫到被掳至巴比伦也是十四代，从被掳至巴比伦到基督降生也是十四代。
耶稣的降生
18 以下是耶稣基督降生的经过。
耶稣的母亲玛丽亚和约瑟订了婚，还没有成亲就从圣灵怀了孕。 19 约瑟是个义人，不愿公开地羞辱她，便决定暗中和她解除婚约。 20 他正在考虑这事的时候，主的一位天使在梦中向他显现，说：“大卫的后裔约瑟，不要怕，把玛丽亚娶过来，因为她所怀的孕是从圣灵来的。 21 她将生一个儿子，你要给祂取名叫耶稣[c]，因为祂要把自己的子民从罪恶中救出来。”
22 这一切应验了主借着先知所说的话： 23 “必有童贞女怀孕生子，祂的名字要叫以马内利，意思是‘上帝与我们同在’。” 24 约瑟醒来，就遵从主的天使的吩咐和玛丽亚结婚， 25 只是在她生下孩子之前没有与她同房。约瑟给孩子取名叫耶稣。
智者来朝拜
2 希律王执政期间，耶稣降生在犹太的伯利恒城。
当时有几位智者[d]从东方来到耶路撒冷， 2 问道：“那生来做犹太人之王的在哪里呢？我们在东方看见祂的星，特来朝拜祂。”
3 希律王听后，心里不安，全城的人都感到不安。 4 希律王就召来祭司长和律法教师，问他们：“基督在哪里降生呢？”
5 他们回答说：“在犹太的伯利恒，因为先知这样记载，
6 “‘犹大地区的伯利恒啊！
你在犹大各城中并不是最小的，
因为有一位君王要从你那里出来，
牧养我的以色列子民。’”
7 于是，希律暗中召见那几位智者，仔细查问那星出现的准确时间， 8 然后派他们去伯利恒，并吩咐道：“你们去仔细寻访那个小孩，找到了，就回来报信，我也好去朝拜祂。”
9 他们听了王的吩咐，就去了。忽然，那颗曾在东方出现的星又出现在他们前面，引领他们来到小孩耶稣所在的地方，便停下来。 10 他们看见那颗星，喜出望外。
11 他们进了屋子，看见孩子和祂母亲玛丽亚，就俯伏在地上拜祂，并打开盛宝物的盒子献上黄金、乳香和没药作礼物。 12 他们在梦中得到指示不可回希律那里，便改道返回了家乡。
逃往埃及
13 他们离开之后，主的天使在梦中向约瑟显现，说：“起来，带着小孩子和祂母亲逃往埃及，住在那里等候我的通知，因为希律要寻找这孩子，杀害祂。” 14 于是，约瑟起来带着孩子和祂母亲连夜逃往埃及， 15 并在那里一直住到希律死了。这就应验了主借着先知所说的话：“我把儿子从埃及召出来。”
16 希律见自己被智者愚弄，大为恼怒，便照着智者所说的时间推算，下令把伯利恒附近两岁以下的男孩杀光。 17 这正应验了耶利米先知的话：
18 “在拉玛有痛哭哀号的声音，
是拉结在为儿女哀痛，
不肯接受安慰，
因为他们都死了！”
定居拿撒勒
19 希律死后，主的天使在梦中向在埃及的约瑟显现，说： 20 “起来，带着孩子和祂母亲回以色列去吧！因为要杀害孩子的人已经死了。” 21 约瑟就起来，带着孩子和祂母亲返回以色列。
22 但约瑟听闻亚基劳继承父亲希律的王位统治犹太，就不敢回犹太。这时，他在梦中得到主的指示，便前往加利利地区， 23 定居在拿撒勒镇。这应验了先知的话：“祂将被称为拿撒勒人。”
开路先锋
3 那时，施洗者约翰来到犹太的旷野传道，说： 2 “悔改吧，因为天国临近了！” 3 约翰就是以赛亚先知所说的那位，他说：“有人在旷野大声呼喊，‘预备主的道，修直祂的路。’”
4 约翰身穿骆驼毛的衣服，腰束皮带，吃的是蝗虫、野蜜。 5 那时，耶路撒冷、犹太各地和约旦河一带的人都来到约翰那里， 6 承认他们的罪，在约旦河里接受他的洗礼。
7 约翰看见很多法利赛人和撒都该人也来受洗，就对他们说：“你们这些毒蛇的后代！谁指示你们逃避那将临的烈怒呢？ 8 你们要结出与悔改相称的果子。 9 不要心里说，‘我们是亚伯拉罕的子孙。’我告诉你们，上帝可以从这些石头中兴起亚伯拉罕的子孙。 10 现在斧头已经放在树根上了，不结好果子的树都要被砍下，丢在火里。 11 我用水为你们施洗，叫你们悔改。但在我之后，有位比我更有能力的要来，我连替祂提鞋都不配。祂要用圣灵和火为你们施洗。 12 祂手拿簸箕，要把谷场清理干净，将麦子存入仓里，用不灭的火把糠秕烧尽。”
耶稣受洗
13 后来，耶稣从加利利来到约旦河要约翰为祂施洗。 14 约翰想要拦住祂，就说：“应该是你为我施洗才对，你反倒来找我？”
15 耶稣回答说：“你就这样做吧！我们理当这样遵行上帝一切的要求。”于是约翰答应了。
16 耶稣受了洗，刚从水里上来，天就开了。祂看见上帝的圣灵像鸽子一样降到祂身上， 17 又有声音从天上传来：“这是我的爱子，我甚喜悦祂。”
耶稣受试探
4 后来，耶稣被圣灵带到旷野，去受魔鬼的试探。 2 耶稣禁食了四十昼夜后，很饥饿。 3 试探者前来对祂说：“如果你是上帝的儿子，可以叫这些石头变成食物。”
4 耶稣回答说：“圣经上说，‘人活着不是单靠食物，乃是靠上帝口中的每一句话。’”
5 魔鬼又带祂进圣城，让祂站在圣殿的最高处， 6 说：“如果你是上帝的儿子，就跳下去吧！因为圣经上说，‘上帝会差遣祂的天使用手托住你，不让你的脚碰在石头上。’”
7 耶稣回答说：“圣经上也说，‘不可试探主——你的上帝。’”
8 魔鬼再带耶稣到一座极高的山上，把世上万国及其荣华富贵展示给祂看， 9 说：“如果你俯伏敬拜我，我就把这一切都给你。”
10 耶稣说：“撒旦，走开！圣经上说，‘要敬拜主——你的上帝，单单事奉祂。’”
11 于是魔鬼离开了耶稣，这时有天使前来伺候祂。
开始传道
12 耶稣听见约翰被捕入狱，就回到加利利。 13 后来，祂离开拿撒勒去迦百农住。迦百农靠近湖边，在西布伦和拿弗他利地区。 14 这就应验了以赛亚先知的话：
15 “西布伦、拿弗他利、
沿海一带及约旦河东、外族人居住的加利利啊！
16 你们住在黑暗中的人看见了大光，
活在死亡阴影下的人被光照亮了！”
17 从那时起，耶稣开始传道：“悔改吧，因为天国临近了！”
呼召门徒
18 耶稣沿着加利利湖边行走的时候，看见被称为彼得的西门和安得烈两兄弟正在撒网打鱼，他们是渔夫。 19 耶稣对他们说：“来跟从我！我要使你们成为得人的渔夫。” 20 他们立刻撇下渔网，跟从了耶稣。 21 耶稣再往前走，又看见雅各和约翰两兄弟正和父亲西庇太一起在船上补渔网。耶稣呼召他们， 22 他们马上离开渔船，辞别父亲，跟从了耶稣。
教导和医治
23 耶稣走遍加利利，在各个会堂里教导人，宣讲天国的福音，医治人们各样的疾病。 24 祂的名声传遍了整个叙利亚。人们把一切患病的，就是患各种疾病的、疼痛的、癫痫的、瘫痪的，以及被鬼附身的都带到祂面前，祂都医治了他们。 25 因此，有大群的人跟从了祂，他们来自加利利、低加坡里、耶路撒冷、犹太和约旦河东。
八福
5 耶稣看见这些人群，就上了山，刚坐下，门徒便走到祂跟前， 2 祂就开口教导他们，说：
3 “心灵贫穷的人有福了，
因为天国是他们的。
4 哀痛的人有福了，
因为他们必得安慰。
5 谦和的人有福了，
因为他们必承受土地。
6 爱慕公义如饥似渴的人有福了，
因为他们必得饱足。
7 心存怜悯的人有福了，
因为他们必蒙上帝的怜悯。
8 心灵纯洁的人有福了，
因为他们必看见上帝。
9 使人和睦的人有福了，
因为他们必被称为上帝的儿女。
10 为义受迫害的人有福了，
因为天国是他们的。
11 “人们因为我的缘故侮辱、迫害、肆意毁谤你们，你们就有福了。 12 要欢喜快乐，因为你们在天上有很大的奖赏。他们也曾这样迫害以前的先知。
盐和光
13 “你们是世上的盐。如果盐失去咸味，怎能使它再变咸呢？它将毫无用处，只有被丢在外面任人践踏。 14 你们是世上的光，如同建在山上的城一样无法隐藏。 15 人点亮了灯，不会把它放在斗底下，而是放在灯台上，好照亮全家。 16 同样，你们的光也应当照在人面前，好让他们看见你们的好行为，便赞美你们天上的父。
成全律法
17 “不要以为我是来废除律法和先知书，我不是来废除，乃是来成全。 18 我实在告诉你们，就是到天地都消失了，律法的一点一划都不会废除，全都要成就。 19 所以，谁违背这些诫命中最小的一条，并教导别人违背，谁在天国将被称为最小的。但谁遵守这些诫命，并教导别人遵守，谁在天国将被称为大的。 20 我告诉你们，除非你们的义胜过律法教师和法利赛人的义，否则断不能进天国。
论仇恨
21 “你们听过吩咐古人的话，‘不可杀人，杀人的要受审判。’ 22 但我告诉你们，凡无缘无故[e]向弟兄发怒的，要受审判；凡骂弟兄是白痴的，要受公会[f]的审判；凡骂弟兄是笨蛋的，难逃地狱的火。
23 “所以，你在祭坛前献祭的时候，要是想起有弟兄和你有过节， 24 就该把祭物留在祭坛前，先去跟他和好，然后再来献祭。
25 “趁着你和告你的人还在去法庭的路上，你要赶紧与对方和解。不然，他会把你交给审判官，审判官会把你交给差役关进监牢。 26 我实在告诉你，要是有一分钱没有还清，你绝不能从那里出来。
论通奸
27 “你们听过这样的话，‘不可通奸。’ 28 但我告诉你们，凡看见妇女就动淫念的，他在心里已经犯了通奸罪。 29 如果你的右眼使你犯罪，就把它剜掉！宁可失去身体的一部分，也比整个人下地狱好。 30 如果你的右手使你犯罪，就把它砍掉！宁可失去身体的一部分，也比整个人下地狱好。
论休妻
31 “还有话说，‘人若休妻，必须给她休书’。 32 但我告诉你们，除非是妻子不贞，否则，休妻就是使妻子犯通奸罪，娶被休女子的人也犯了通奸罪。
论起誓
33 “你们也听过吩咐古人的话，‘不可违背誓言，总要向主遵守所起的誓。’ 34 但我告诉你们，不可起誓。不可指着天起誓，因为天是上帝的宝座。 35 不可指着地起誓，因为地是上帝的脚凳。不可指着圣城耶路撒冷起誓，因为那是大君王的城。 36 也不可指着自己的头起誓，因为你不能使一根头发变黑或变白。 37 你们说话，是就说是，不是就说不是，多说的便是来自那恶者[g]。
论爱仇敌
38 “你们听过这样的话，‘以眼还眼，以牙还牙。’ 39 但我告诉你们，不要跟恶人作对。有人打你的右脸，连左脸也转过来让他打。 40 有人想控告你，要夺取你的内衣，连外衣也给他。 41 有人强迫你走一里路，你就跟他走二里路。 42 有求你的，就给他；有向你借的，不可拒绝他。
43 “你们听过这样的话，‘要爱邻居，恨仇敌。’ 44 但我告诉你们，要爱仇敌，为迫害你们的人祷告。 45 这样，你们才是天父的孩子。因为祂让阳光照好人也照坏人，降雨给义人也给恶人。 46 如果你们只爱那些爱你们的人，有什么值得嘉奖的呢？就是税吏也会这样做。 47 如果你们只问候自己的弟兄，有什么特别呢？就是外族人也会这样做。 48 所以，你们要纯全，正如你们的天父是纯全的。
论周济穷人
6 “你们要小心，行善的时候不可张扬，故意叫人看见，否则就不能得你们天父的赏赐了。
2 “因此，周济穷人的时候，不要大吹大擂，像那些伪君子在会堂和街市上所行的一样，以博取人们的赞赏。我实在告诉你们，他们得到的赏赐仅此而已。 3 你们周济穷人的时候，右手所做的别叫左手知道， 4 要不声不响地去做。这样，鉴察隐秘事的天父必赏赐你们。
论祷告
5 “你们祷告时，不要像伪君子那样。他们喜欢站在会堂里和十字路口上公开祷告，故意让人看见。我实在告诉你们，他们得到的赏赐不过是人的赞赏。 6 你们祷告的时候，要进入内室，关上门，向你们肉眼看不见的父祈祷，鉴察隐秘事的父必赏赐你们。
7 “你们祷告时不可像外族人那样喋喋不休，他们以为长篇大论，就必蒙上帝垂听。 8 不可像他们那样，因为在你们祷告以前，你们的父已经知道你们的需要了。
9 “你们应当这样祷告，
“‘我们天上的父，
愿人们都尊崇你的圣名，
10 愿你的国度降临，
愿你的旨意在地上成就，就像在天上成就一样。
11 求你今天赐给我们日用的饮食。
12 饶恕我们的罪，
就像我们饶恕了得罪我们的人。
13 不要让我们遇见诱惑，
救我们脱离那恶者。
因为国度、权柄、荣耀都是你的，直到永远。阿们！’
14 “如果你们饶恕别人的过犯，你们的天父也必饶恕你们的过犯。 15 如果你们不饶恕别人的过犯，你们的天父也不会饶恕你们的过犯。
论禁食
16 “你们禁食的时候，不要像伪君子那样愁眉苦脸，因为他们故意蓬头垢面，好让别人知道他们在禁食。我实在告诉你们，他们得到的赏赐不过是人的赞赏。 17 你禁食的时候要梳头洗脸， 18 不叫人们看出你在禁食，只让你肉眼看不见的父知道，鉴察隐秘事的父必赏赐你。
论积财
19 “不要为自己在世上积攒财宝，世上有虫子咬，会生锈，又有贼闯进来偷。 20 你们要把财宝积攒在天上，天上没有虫子咬，不会生锈，也没有贼闯进来偷。 21 要知道，你的财宝在哪里，你的心也在哪里。
22 “眼睛是身上的灯。如果你的眼睛明亮，全身都光明； 23 要是你的眼睛昏花[h]，全身就黑暗。如果你里面的光黑暗了，那黑暗是多么大啊！
24 “一个人不能服侍两位主人，因为他不是恨这位、爱那位，就是重这位、轻那位。你们不能又事奉上帝，又崇拜金钱。
不要忧虑衣食
25 “所以我告诉你们，不要为生活忧虑，如吃什么、喝什么，也不要为身体忧虑，如穿什么。难道生命不比饮食重要吗？身体不比穿着重要吗？
26 “你们看天上的飞鸟，它们不种，不收，也不在仓里积存粮食，你们的天父尚且养活它们，难道你们还不如飞鸟贵重吗？ 27 你们谁能用忧虑使自己多活片刻呢？
28 “何必为穿着忧虑呢？你们看看野地的百合花是如何生长的，它们既不劳苦，也不纺织。 29 但我告诉你们，就连所罗门王最显赫时的穿戴还不如一朵百合花！ 30 你们的信心太小了！野地里的草今天还在，明天就丢在炉中化为灰烬，上帝还这样装扮它们，何况你们呢？ 31 所以，你们不要忧虑‘吃什么？喝什么？穿什么？’ 32 因为这些都是外族人的追求，你们的天父知道你们的需要。
33 “你们要先寻求上帝的国和祂的义，这一切都会赐给你们。 34 所以，不要为明天忧虑，因为明天自有明天的忧虑，一天的难处一天担就够了。
责人先责己
7 “不要论断别人，免得你们被论断。 2 因为你们怎样论断别人，也必照样被论断；你们用什么尺度衡量别人，也要用什么尺度衡量你们。 3 为什么你只看见你弟兄眼中的小刺，却看不见自己眼中的大梁呢？ 4 既然你自己眼中有大梁，又怎么能对弟兄说‘让我除去你眼中的小刺’呢？ 5 你这伪君子啊！要先除掉自己眼中的大梁，才能看得清楚，好清除弟兄眼中的小刺。
6 “不要把圣物给狗，免得狗转过头来咬你们，也不要把珍珠丢在猪前，免得猪践踏了珍珠。
祈求、寻找、叩门
7 “祈求，就会给你们；寻找，就会寻见；叩门，就会给你们开门。 8 因为凡祈求的，就得到；寻找的，就寻见；叩门的，就给他开门。
9 “你们做父亲的，谁会在儿子要饼时给他石头， 10 要鱼时给他毒蛇呢？ 11 你们虽然邪恶，尚且知道把好东西给儿女，你们的天父岂不更要把好东西赐给求祂的人吗？
12 “所以，你们希望人怎样待你们，就要怎样待人，这是律法和先知的教导。
辨别与抉择
13 “你们要进窄门，因为通向灭亡的门大，路宽，进去的人也多； 14 但通向永生的门小，路窄，找到的人也少。
15 “你们要提防假先知，他们披着羊皮到你们当中，骨子里却是凶残的狼。 16 你们可以凭他们结的果子认出他们。荆棘怎能结出葡萄呢？蒺藜怎能长出无花果呢？ 17 同样，好树结好果子，坏树结坏果子； 18 好树结不出坏果子，坏树也结不出好果子。 19 凡不结好果子的树，都要被砍下来丢在火里。 20 因此，你们可以凭他们结的果子认出他们。 21 并不是所有称呼我‘主啊，主啊’的人都能进天国，只有遵行我天父旨意的人才能进去。 22 在审判那天，很多人会对我说，‘主啊，主啊，我们不是奉你的名传道，奉你的名赶鬼，奉你的名行了许多神迹吗？’ 23 我会清楚地告诉他们，‘我从来不认识你们，你们这些作恶的人走开！’
两种盖房子的人
24 “所以，凡听了我的这些话就去行的人，就像聪明人把房子建在磐石上。 25 任由风吹雨打、洪水冲击，房子仍屹立不倒，因为它建基在磐石上。 26 凡听了我这些话不去行的，就像愚昧人把房子建在沙土上。 27 遇到风吹雨打、洪水冲击，房子就倒塌了，而且倒塌得很厉害。”
28 大家听完耶稣这番教导，都很惊奇， 29 因为祂教导他们时像位有权柄的人，不像他们的律法教师。
麻风病痊愈
8 耶稣下山的时候，有许多人跟着。 2 有一个患麻风病的人跑来跪在祂跟前，说：“主啊，如果你肯，一定能使我洁净。”
3 耶稣伸手摸他，说：“我肯，你洁净了吧！”那人的麻风病就立刻洁净了。
4 耶稣对他说：“不要把这事告诉别人，要去让祭司察看你的身体，并且照摩西的规定献祭，向众人证明你已经洁净了。”
百夫长的信心
5 耶稣到了迦百农，一个百夫长前来向祂求助，说： 6 “主啊，我的仆人瘫痪，躺在家里，非常痛苦。”
7 耶稣说：“我这就去医治他。”
8 百夫长说：“主啊，我不配让你亲自来我家。你只要说一句话，我仆人就会痊愈。 9 因为我有上司，也有部下。我命令我的部下去，他就去；要他来，他就来。我吩咐仆人做什么事，他一定照办。”
10 耶稣听了，感到惊奇，便对跟随祂的人说：“我实在告诉你们，我在以色列从未见过信心这么大的人。 11 我告诉你们，将来有许多从东从西来的人会在天国与亚伯拉罕、以撒和雅各一同欢宴。 12 但那些本应承受天国的人反会被赶出去，在黑暗里哀哭切齿。”
13 耶稣对百夫长说：“你回去吧！就照你所信的给你成就。”就在那时候，他的仆人便痊愈了。
治病赶鬼
14 耶稣来到彼得家，看见彼得的岳母正在发烧，躺在床上。 15 耶稣一摸她的手，烧就退了。她便起来服侍耶稣。
16 当天晚上，有人带着许多被鬼附身的人来见耶稣。耶稣一句话就把鬼赶出去了，并医好了所有的病人。 17 这是要应验以赛亚先知的话：“祂担当了我们的软弱，背负了我们的疾病。”
跟从耶稣的代价
18 耶稣看到人群围着祂，就吩咐门徒渡到湖对岸。 19 这时，有一位律法教师上前对耶稣说：“老师，无论你往哪里去，我都要跟从你。”
20 耶稣说：“狐狸有洞，飞鸟有窝，人子却没有安枕之处。”
21 另一个门徒对耶稣说：“主啊，请让我先回去安葬我的父亲。” 22 耶稣对他说：“跟从我，让死人去埋葬他们的死人吧！”
平静风浪
23 耶稣上了船，门徒也跟着祂上了船。 24 忽然，湖面上狂风大作，波涛汹涌，船快要被巨浪吞没，耶稣却在睡觉。
25 门徒连忙叫醒耶稣，说：“主啊，救命！我们快淹死了！”
26 耶稣答道：“你们的信心太小了，为什么害怕呢？”于是祂起来斥责风和浪，风浪就完全平静了。
27 门徒很惊奇，说：“祂究竟是什么人？连风浪都听祂的！”
治好两个被鬼附身的人
28 耶稣到了对岸加大拉[i]人的地方，有两个被鬼附身的人从坟地里出来见祂。他们非常凶恶，没有人敢从那里经过。 29 他们喊着说：“上帝的儿子啊！我们和你有什么关系？时候还没有到，你就来叫我们受苦吗？”
30 当时，有一大群猪在附近吃食。 31 鬼就哀求耶稣：“如果你要赶我们出去，就让我们进入猪群吧！”
32 耶稣说：“去吧！”
于是，鬼从那二人身上出来，进入猪群，整群猪就一路奔下陡坡，冲进湖里淹死了。 33 放猪的人逃进城，把事情的经过以及被鬼附身者的遭遇告诉了城里的人。 34 于是，全城的人都出来见耶稣，见到后，便请求祂离开那地方。
医治瘫子
9 耶稣坐船回到湖对岸自己住的城镇。
2 有人用担架把一个瘫子抬到耶稣面前。耶稣看见他们的信心，就对瘫子说：“孩子，放心吧！你的罪得到赦免了。”
3 几个律法教师听了，心里想：“这个人是在亵渎上帝。”

Joseph Accepts Jesus as His Son
18 This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about[d]: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.(S) 19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet[e] did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce(T) her quietly.
20 But after he had considered this, an angel(U) of the Lord appeared to him in a dream(V) and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,[f](W) because he will save his people from their sins.”(X)
22 All this took place to fulfill(Y) what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”[g](Z) (which means “God with us”).
24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel(AA) of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25 But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.(AB)
The Magi Visit the Messiah
2 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea,(AC) during the time of King Herod,(AD) Magi[h] from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?(AE) We saw his star(AF) when it rose and have come to worship him.”
3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. 5 “In Bethlehem(AG) in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written:
6 “‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for out of you will come a ruler
who will shepherd my people Israel.’[i]”(AH)
7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.”
9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him.(AI) Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts(AJ) of gold, frankincense and myrrh. 12 And having been warned(AK) in a dream(AL) not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.
The Escape to Egypt
13 When they had gone, an angel(AM) of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream.(AN) “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”(AO)
14 So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, 15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled(AP) what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”[j](AQ)
16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. 17 Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:(AR)
18 “A voice is heard in Ramah,
weeping and great mourning,
Rachel(AS) weeping for her children
and refusing to be comforted,

The Return to Nazareth
19 After Herod died, an angel(AU) of the Lord appeared in a dream(AV) to Joseph in Egypt 20 and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child’s life are dead.”(AW)
21 So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream,(AX) he withdrew to the district of Galilee,(AY) 23 and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth.(AZ) So was fulfilled(BA) what was said through the prophets, that he would be called a Nazarene.(BB)
John the Baptist Prepares the Way(BC)
3 In those days John the Baptist(BD) came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea 2 and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven(BE) has come near.” 3 This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah:
“A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.’”[l](BF)
4 John’s(BG) clothes were made of camel’s hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist.(BH) His food was locusts(BI) and wild honey. 5 People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan. 6 Confessing their sins, they were baptized(BJ) by him in the Jordan River.
7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: “You brood of vipers!(BK) Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?(BL) 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.(BM) 9 And do not think you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’(BN) I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 10 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.(BO)
11 “I baptize you with[m] water for repentance.(BP) But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with[n] the Holy Spirit(BQ) and fire.(BR) 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”(BS)
The Baptism of Jesus(BT)
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John.(BU) 14 But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?”
15 Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented.
16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened,(BV) and he saw the Spirit of God(BW) descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven(BX) said, “This is my Son,(BY) whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”(BZ)
Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness(CA)
4 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted[o](CB) by the devil.(CC) 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights,(CD) he was hungry. 3 The tempter(CE) came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God,(CF) tell these stones to become bread.”
4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’[p]”(CG)
5 Then the devil took him to the holy city(CH) and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6 “If you are the Son of God,”(CI) he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written:
“‘He will command his angels concerning you,
and they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’[q]”(CJ)
7 Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’[r]”(CK)
8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9 “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”

Jesus Begins to Preach
12 When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison,(CP) he withdrew to Galilee.(CQ) 13 Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum,(CR) which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali— 14 to fulfill(CS) what was said through the prophet Isaiah:
15 “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,
the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan,
Galilee of the Gentiles—
16 the people living in darkness
have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of the shadow of death
a light has dawned.”[t](CT)
17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven(CU) has come near.”
Jesus Calls His First Disciples(CV)
18 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee,(CW) he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter(CX) and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19 “Come, follow me,”(CY) Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 20 At once they left their nets and followed him.(CZ)
21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John.(DA) They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.(DB)
Jesus Heals the Sick
23 Jesus went throughout Galilee,(DC) teaching in their synagogues,(DD) proclaiming the good news(DE) of the kingdom,(DF) and healing every disease and sickness among the people.(DG) 24 News about him spread all over Syria,(DH) and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed,(DI) those having seizures,(DJ) and the paralyzed;(DK) and he healed them. 25 Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis,[u] Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan followed him.(DL)
Introduction to the Sermon on the Mount
5 Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them.
The Beatitudes(DM)
He said:
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.(DN)
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.(DO)

Salt and Light
13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.(EC)
14 “You are the light of the world.(ED) A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.(EE) 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others,(EF) that they may see your good deeds(EG) and glorify(EH) your Father in heaven.
The Fulfillment of the Law
17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.(EI) 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.(EJ) 19 Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands(EK) and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.(EL)
Murder(EM)
21 “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder,[v](EN) and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry(EO) with a brother or sister[w][x] will be subject to judgment.(EP) Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’[y] is answerable to the court.(EQ) And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.(ER)
23 “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.
25 “Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. 26 Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.
Adultery
27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’[z](ES) 28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.(ET) 29 If your right eye causes you to stumble,(EU) gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to stumble,(EV) cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.
Divorce
31 “It has been said, ‘Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.’[aa](EW) 32 But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.(EX)
Oaths
33 “Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath,(EY) but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.’(EZ) 34 But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all:(FA) either by heaven, for it is God’s throne;(FB) 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King.(FC) 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. 37 All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’;(FD) anything beyond this comes from the evil one.[ab](FE)
Eye for Eye
38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’[ac](FF) 39 But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.(FG) 40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. 41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.(FH)
Love for Enemies
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor[ad](FI) and hate your enemy.’(FJ) 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,(FK) 45 that you may be children(FL) of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.(FM) 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get?(FN) Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Giving to the Needy
6 “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them.(FP) If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.
2 “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.(FQ)
Prayer(FR)
5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing(FS) in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father,(FT) who is unseen. 13 “Enter through the narrow gate.(HJ) For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.
True and False Prophets
15 “Watch out for false prophets.(HK) They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.(HL) 16 By their fruit you will recognize them.(HM) Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?(HN) 17 Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.(HO) 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.(HP) 20 Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.

8 When Jesus came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. 2 A man with leprosy[aj](IB) came and knelt before him(IC) and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”
3 Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy. 4 Then Jesus said to him, “See that you don’t tell anyone.(ID) But go, show yourself to the priest(IE) and offer the gift Moses commanded,(IF) as a testimony to them.”
The Faith of the Centurion(IG)
5 When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. 6 “Lord,” he said, “my servant lies at home paralyzed,(IH) suffering terribly.”
7 Jesus said to him, “Shall I come and heal him?”
8 The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed.(II) 9 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
10 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.(IJ) 11 I say to you that many will come from the east and the west,(IK) and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.(IL) 12 But the subjects of the kingdom(IM) will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”(IN)
13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go! Let it be done just as you believed it would.”(IO) And his servant was healed at that moment.
Jesus Heals Many(IP)
14 When Jesus came into Peter’s house, he saw Peter’s mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. 15 He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him.
16 When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick.(IQ) 17 This was to fulfill(IR) what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:
The Cost of Following Jesus(IT)
18 When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake.(IU) 19 Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”
20 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man(IV) has no place to lay his head.”
21 Another disciple said to him, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”
22 But Jesus told him, “Follow me,(IW) and let the dead bury their own dead.”
Jesus Calms the Storm(IX)(IY)
23 Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24 Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”
26 He replied, “You of little faith,(IZ) why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.(JA)
27 The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”
Jesus Restores Two Demon-Possessed Men(JB)
28 When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes,[al] two demon-possessed(JC) men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way. 29 “What do you want with us,(JD) Son of God?” they shouted. “Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?”(JE)
30 Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding. 31 The demons begged Jesus, “If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.”
32 He said to them, “Go!” So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water. 33 Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. 34 Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region.(JF)
Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralyzed Man(JG)
9 Jesus stepped into a boat, crossed over and came to his own town.(JH) 2 Some men brought to him a paralyzed man,(JI) lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith,(JJ) he said to the man, “Take heart,(JK) son; your sins are forgiven.”(JL)
3 At this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves, “This fellow is blaspheming!”(JM)
4 Knowing their thoughts,(JN) Jesus said, “Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts? 5 Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 6 But I want you to know that the Son of Man(JO) has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “Get up, take your mat and go home.” 7 Then the man got up and went home. 8 When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God,(JP) who had given such authority to man.
The Calling of Matthew(JQ)
9 As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,”(JR) he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.
10 While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples. 11 When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”(JS)
12 On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 13 But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’[am](JT) For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”(JU)
Jesus Questioned About Fasting(JV)
14 Then John’s(JW) disciples came and asked him, “How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often,(JX) but your disciples do not fast?”
15 Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them?(JY) The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.(JZ)
