论周济穷人
6 “你们要小心，行善的时候不可张扬，故意叫人看见，否则就不能得你们天父的赏赐了。
2 “因此，周济穷人的时候，不要大吹大擂，像那些伪君子在会堂和街市上所行的一样，以博取人们的赞赏。我实在告诉你们，他们得到的赏赐仅此而已。 3 你们周济穷人的时候，右手所做的别叫左手知道， 4 要不声不响地去做。这样，鉴察隐秘事的天父必赏赐你们。
论祷告
5 “你们祷告时，不要像伪君子那样。他们喜欢站在会堂里和十字路口上公开祷告，故意让人看见。我实在告诉你们，他们得到的赏赐不过是人的赞赏。 6 你们祷告的时候，要进入内室，关上门，向你们肉眼看不见的父祈祷，鉴察隐秘事的父必赏赐你们。
7 “你们祷告时不可像外族人那样喋喋不休，他们以为长篇大论，就必蒙上帝垂听。 8 不可像他们那样，因为在你们祷告以前，你们的父已经知道你们的需要了。
9 “你们应当这样祷告，
“‘我们天上的父，
愿人们都尊崇你的圣名，
10 愿你的国度降临，
愿你的旨意在地上成就，就像在天上成就一样。
11 求你今天赐给我们日用的饮食。
12 饶恕我们的罪，
就像我们饶恕了得罪我们的人。
13 不要让我们遇见诱惑，
救我们脱离那恶者。
因为国度、权柄、荣耀都是你的，直到永远。阿们！’
14 “如果你们饶恕别人的过犯，你们的天父也必饶恕你们的过犯。 15 如果你们不饶恕别人的过犯，你们的天父也不会饶恕你们的过犯。
论禁食
16 “你们禁食的时候，不要像伪君子那样愁眉苦脸，因为他们故意蓬头垢面，好让别人知道他们在禁食。我实在告诉你们，他们得到的赏赐不过是人的赞赏。 17 你禁食的时候要梳头洗脸， 18 不叫人们看出你在禁食，只让你肉眼看不见的父知道，鉴察隐秘事的父必赏赐你。
论积财
19 “不要为自己在世上积攒财宝，世上有虫子咬，会生锈，又有贼闯进来偷。 20 你们要把财宝积攒在天上，天上没有虫子咬，不会生锈，也没有贼闯进来偷。 21 要知道，你的财宝在哪里，你的心也在哪里。
22 “眼睛是身上的灯。如果你的眼睛明亮，全身都光明； 23 要是你的眼睛昏花[a]，全身就黑暗。如果你里面的光黑暗了，那黑暗是多么大啊！
24 “一个人不能服侍两位主人，因为他不是恨这位、爱那位，就是重这位、轻那位。你们不能又事奉上帝，又崇拜金钱。
不要忧虑衣食
25 “所以我告诉你们，不要为生活忧虑，如吃什么、喝什么，也不要为身体忧虑，如穿什么。难道生命不比饮食重要吗？身体不比穿着重要吗？
26 “你们看天上的飞鸟，它们不种，不收，也不在仓里积存粮食，你们的天父尚且养活它们，难道你们还不如飞鸟贵重吗？ 27 你们谁能用忧虑使自己多活片刻呢？
28 “何必为穿着忧虑呢？你们看看野地的百合花是如何生长的，它们既不劳苦，也不纺织。 29 但我告诉你们，就连所罗门王最显赫时的穿戴还不如一朵百合花！ 30 你们的信心太小了！野地里的草今天还在，明天就丢在炉中化为灰烬，上帝还这样装扮它们，何况你们呢？ 31 所以，你们不要忧虑‘吃什么？喝什么？穿什么？’ 32 因为这些都是外族人的追求，你们的天父知道你们的需要。
33 “你们要先寻求上帝的国和祂的义，这一切都会赐给你们。 34 所以，不要为明天忧虑，因为明天自有明天的忧虑，一天的难处一天担就够了。
责人先责己
7 “不要论断别人，免得你们被论断。 2 因为你们怎样论断别人，也必照样被论断；你们用什么尺度衡量别人，也要用什么尺度衡量你们。 3 为什么你只看见你弟兄眼中的小刺，却看不见自己眼中的大梁呢？ 4 既然你自己眼中有大梁，又怎么能对弟兄说‘让我除去你眼中的小刺’呢？ 5 你这伪君子啊！要先除掉自己眼中的大梁，才能看得清楚，好清除弟兄眼中的小刺。
6 “不要把圣物给狗，免得狗转过头来咬你们，也不要把珍珠丢在猪前，免得猪践踏了珍珠。
祈求、寻找、叩门
7 “祈求，就会给你们；寻找，就会寻见；叩门，就会给你们开门。 8 因为凡祈求的，就得到；寻找的，就寻见；叩门的，就给他开门。
9 “你们做父亲的，谁会在儿子要饼时给他石头， 10 要鱼时给他毒蛇呢？ 11 你们虽然邪恶，尚且知道把好东西给儿女，你们的天父岂不更要把好东西赐给求祂的人吗？
12 “所以，你们希望人怎样待你们，就要怎样待人，这是律法和先知的教导。
辨别与抉择
13 “你们要进窄门，因为通向灭亡的门大，路宽，进去的人也多； 14 但通向永生的门小，路窄，找到的人也少。
15 “你们要提防假先知，他们披着羊皮到你们当中，骨子里却是凶残的狼。 16 你们可以凭他们结的果子认出他们。荆棘怎能结出葡萄呢？蒺藜怎能长出无花果呢？ 17 同样，好树结好果子，坏树结坏果子； 18 好树结不出坏果子，坏树也结不出好果子。 19 凡不结好果子的树，都要被砍下来丢在火里。 20 因此，你们可以凭他们结的果子认出他们。 21 并不是所有称呼我‘主啊，主啊’的人都能进天国，只有遵行我天父旨意的人才能进去。 22 在审判那天，很多人会对我说，‘主啊，主啊，我们不是奉你的名传道，奉你的名赶鬼，奉你的名行了许多神迹吗？’ 23 我会清楚地告诉他们，‘我从来不认识你们，你们这些作恶的人走开！’
两种盖房子的人
24 “所以，凡听了我的这些话就去行的人，就像聪明人把房子建在磐石上。 25 任由风吹雨打、洪水冲击，房子仍屹立不倒，因为它建基在磐石上。 26 凡听了我这些话不去行的，就像愚昧人把房子建在沙土上。 27 遇到风吹雨打、洪水冲击，房子就倒塌了，而且倒塌得很厉害。”
28 大家听完耶稣这番教导，都很惊奇， 29 因为祂教导他们时像位有权柄的人，不像他们的律法教师。
麻风病痊愈
8 耶稣下山的时候，有许多人跟着。 2 有一个患麻风病的人跑来跪在祂跟前，说：“主啊，如果你肯，一定能使我洁净。”
3 耶稣伸手摸他，说：“我肯，你洁净了吧！”那人的麻风病就立刻洁净了。
4 耶稣对他说：“不要把这事告诉别人，要去让祭司察看你的身体，并且照摩西的规定献祭，向众人证明你已经洁净了。”
百夫长的信心
5 耶稣到了迦百农，一个百夫长前来向祂求助，说： 6 “主啊，我的仆人瘫痪，躺在家里，非常痛苦。”
7 耶稣说：“我这就去医治他。”
8 百夫长说：“主啊，我不配让你亲自来我家。你只要说一句话，我仆人就会痊愈。 9 因为我有上司，也有部下。我命令我的部下去，他就去；要他来，他就来。我吩咐仆人做什么事，他一定照办。”
10 耶稣听了，感到惊奇，便对跟随祂的人说：“我实在告诉你们，我在以色列从未见过信心这么大的人。 11 我告诉你们，将来有许多从东从西来的人会在天国与亚伯拉罕、以撒和雅各一同欢宴。 12 但那些本应承受天国的人反会被赶出去，在黑暗里哀哭切齿。”
13 耶稣对百夫长说：“你回去吧！就照你所信的给你成就。”就在那时候，他的仆人便痊愈了。
治病赶鬼
14 耶稣来到彼得家，看见彼得的岳母正在发烧，躺在床上。 15 耶稣一摸她的手，烧就退了。她便起来服侍耶稣。
16 当天晚上，有人带着许多被鬼附身的人来见耶稣。耶稣一句话就把鬼赶出去了，并医好了所有的病人。 17 这是要应验以赛亚先知的话：“祂担当了我们的软弱，背负了我们的疾病。”
跟从耶稣的代价
18 耶稣看到人群围着祂，就吩咐门徒渡到湖对岸。 19 这时，有一位律法教师上前对耶稣说：“老师，无论你往哪里去，我都要跟从你。”
20 耶稣说：“狐狸有洞，飞鸟有窝，人子却没有安枕之处。”
21 另一个门徒对耶稣说：“主啊，请让我先回去安葬我的父亲。” 22 耶稣对他说：“跟从我，让死人去埋葬他们的死人吧！”
平静风浪
23 耶稣上了船，门徒也跟着祂上了船。 24 忽然，湖面上狂风大作，波涛汹涌，船快要被巨浪吞没，耶稣却在睡觉。
25 门徒连忙叫醒耶稣，说：“主啊，救命！我们快淹死了！”
26 耶稣答道：“你们的信心太小了，为什么害怕呢？”于是祂起来斥责风和浪，风浪就完全平静了。
27 门徒很惊奇，说：“祂究竟是什么人？连风浪都听祂的！”
治好两个被鬼附身的人
28 耶稣到了对岸加大拉[b]人的地方，有两个被鬼附身的人从坟地里出来见祂。他们非常凶恶，没有人敢从那里经过。 29 他们喊着说：“上帝的儿子啊！我们和你有什么关系？时候还没有到，你就来叫我们受苦吗？”
30 当时，有一大群猪在附近吃食。 31 鬼就哀求耶稣：“如果你要赶我们出去，就让我们进入猪群吧！”
32 耶稣说：“去吧！”
于是，鬼从那二人身上出来，进入猪群，整群猪就一路奔下陡坡，冲进湖里淹死了。 33 放猪的人逃进城，把事情的经过以及被鬼附身者的遭遇告诉了城里的人。 34 于是，全城的人都出来见耶稣，见到后，便请求祂离开那地方。
医治瘫子
9 耶稣坐船回到湖对岸自己住的城镇。
2 有人用担架把一个瘫子抬到耶稣面前。耶稣看见他们的信心，就对瘫子说：“孩子，放心吧！你的罪得到赦免了。”
3 几个律法教师听了，心里想：“这个人是在亵渎上帝。”
4 耶稣知道他们的心思，就说：“你们为什么心怀恶念呢？ 5 说‘你的罪得到赦免了’容易呢？还是说‘你起来行走’容易呢？ 6 如今我要让你们知道人子在世上有赦罪的权柄。”于是祂对瘫子说：“起来！收拾你的担架回家去吧。”
7 那人立刻站起来，回家去了。 8 看见的人都充满了敬畏，就赞美把这样的权柄赐给人的上帝。
呼召马太
9 耶稣离开那里往前走，看见一个名叫马太的人坐在收税站里，便对他说：“跟从我！”马太就站起来跟从了耶稣。
10 耶稣在马太家里坐席的时候，很多税吏和罪人前来跟耶稣和祂的门徒一起坐席。 11 法利赛人看见了，就质问耶稣的门徒：“你们的老师为何跟税吏和罪人一起吃饭？” 12 耶稣听见后，答道：“健康的人不需要医生，有病的人才需要。 13 圣经上说，‘我喜爱怜悯之心，而非祭物’，你们去揣摩这句话的意思吧。我来不是要召义人，乃是要召罪人。”
禁食的问题
14 那时，约翰的门徒来问耶稣：“我们和法利赛人常常禁食，为什么你的门徒不禁食呢？”
15 耶稣对他们说：“新郎和宾客还在一起的时候，宾客怎能悲伤呢？但有一天新郎将被带走，那时他们就要禁食了。
16 “没有人用新布缝补旧衣，恐怕新布会把旧衣扯破，破洞会更大。 17 也没有人用旧皮囊来盛新酒，否则皮囊会胀破，酒也漏了，皮囊也毁了。人们总是把新酒装在新皮囊里，以便两样都能保住。”
起死回生
18 当耶稣在说话的时候，来了一个管理会堂的人跪在祂面前，说：“我的女儿刚刚死了，请你去把手按在她身上，她就会活过来。” 19 耶稣和门徒就起身跟着他去了。 20 途中，有一个患了十二年血漏病的女人挤到耶稣的背后，摸了一下祂衣服的穗边， 21 因为她心想：“我只要摸到祂的衣服，病就会好。” 22 耶稣转过头来，看见她，就说：“女儿，放心吧，你的信心救了你。”就在那一刻，她的顽疾痊愈了。
23 耶稣来到管理会堂之人的家，看见殡葬的吹乐手和乱嚷嚷的人群， 24 就吩咐他们：“你们出去吧，这女孩并没有死，只是睡着了。”他们都讥笑祂。
25 耶稣让众人都出去，然后进去拉着女孩的手，女孩就起来了。 26 这件事传遍了整个地区。
医治瞎子和哑巴
27 耶稣从那里往前走，有两个瞎子跟着祂，高声呼叫：“大卫的后裔啊，可怜我们吧！”
28 耶稣进了房子，那两个瞎子来到祂面前。耶稣问他们：“你们相信我能做这事吗？”他们说：“主啊，我们相信。”
29 于是，耶稣摸他们的眼睛，并说：“照你们的信心成全你们吧。” 30 他们立刻得见光明。耶稣郑重地叮嘱他们：“不要张扬这件事。” 31 但他们出去后把祂所行的事传遍了那一带。
32 他们正要离去，有人带着一个被鬼附身的哑巴来见耶稣。 33 耶稣把鬼赶出去后，哑巴就能说话了。
众人都感到惊奇，说：“在以色列从未见过这样的事。”
34 法利赛人却说：“祂只不过是靠鬼王赶鬼。”
耶稣怜悯众人
35 耶稣走遍了各城各乡，在会堂里教导人，传讲天国的福音，医治各样的疾病。 36 祂看见众人，心里怜悯他们，因为他们困苦无助，好像没有牧人的羊。 37 耶稣对门徒说：“要收割的庄稼很多，工人却很少。 38 因此，你们要祈求庄稼的主人派更多的工人去收割。”
差遣使徒
10 耶稣叫了十二位门徒来，将权柄赐给他们，使他们能够赶出污鬼、医治各样的疾病。 2 以下是这十二位使徒的名字：
首先是西门，又名彼得，还有彼得的兄弟安得烈、西庇太的儿子雅各、雅各的兄弟约翰、 3 腓力、巴多罗买、多马、税吏马太、亚勒腓的儿子雅各、达太、 4 激进党人[c]西门和出卖耶稣的加略人犹大。
5 耶稣差遣这十二个人出去，嘱咐他们：“外族人的地方不要去，撒玛利亚人的城镇也不要进， 6 要到以色列人当中寻找迷失的羊。
7 “你们要边走边传，‘天国临近了！’ 8 要医好病人，叫死人复活，使麻风病人痊愈，赶走邪灵。你们白白地得来，也应当白白地给人。 9 出门时钱袋里不要带金、银、铜币， 10 不要带行李、备用的衣服、鞋子或手杖，因为做工的理应得到供应。 11 你们无论到哪座城、哪个村，要在那里寻找愿意接待你们的人，然后住在他家，一直住到离开。 12 你们进他家的时候，要为他们祝福。 13 如果那家配得福气，你们的祝福必临到他们；如果那家不配蒙福，祝福仍归给你们。 14 如果有人不接待你们，不听你们传的信息，你们离开那家或那城时，就把脚上的尘土跺掉作为对他们的警告。 15 我实在告诉你们，在审判之日，他们所受的痛苦比所多玛和蛾摩拉所受的还大！
将临的迫害
16 “听着，我差你们出去，就好像使羊走进狼群一般。所以，你们要像蛇一样机灵，像鸽子一样驯良。
17 “你们要小心谨慎，因为人们要把你们送上法庭，也要在会堂里鞭打你们。 18 你们要因我的缘故被带到官长和君王面前，在他们和外族人面前为我做见证。 19 当你们被押送公堂时，不用顾虑如何应对，或说什么话，那时必会赐给你们当说的话。 20 因为那时候说话的不是你们自己，乃是你们父的灵借着你们说话。
21 “那时，人必把自己的弟兄置于死地，父亲必把儿子置于死地，儿女必反叛父母，置他们于死地。 22 你们将为我的名而被众人憎恨，但坚忍到底的必定得救。 23 如果你们在一个地方遭迫害，就避到另一个地方。我实在告诉你们，没等你们走遍以色列的城镇，人子就来了。
24 “学生不能高过老师，奴仆也不能大过主人。 25 学生顶多和老师一样，奴仆顶多和主人一样。连一家之主都被骂成是别西卜[d]，更何况祂的家人呢？
26 “不要害怕那些迫害你们的人。因为掩盖的事终会暴露出来，隐藏的秘密终会被人知道。 27 你们要把我私下告诉你们的当众讲出来，你们要在屋顶上把听到的悄悄话宣告出来。 28 那些只能杀害身体，不能毁灭灵魂的人，不用怕他们。但要畏惧那位有权将身体和灵魂一同毁灭在地狱里的上帝。 29 两只麻雀不是只卖一个铜钱吗？然而没有天父的许可，一只也不会掉在地上。 30 就连你们的头发都被数过了。 31 所以不要害怕，你们比许多麻雀更贵重！
32 “凡公开承认我的，我在天父面前也必承认他； 33 凡公开不承认我的，我在天父面前也必不承认他。
跟从主的代价
34 “不要以为我来了会让天下太平，我并非带来和平，乃是带来刀剑。 35 因为我来是要叫儿子与父亲作对，女儿与母亲作对，媳妇与婆婆作对， 36 家人之间反目成仇。
37 “爱父母过于爱我的人不配做我的门徒；爱儿女过于爱我的人不配做我的门徒； 38 不肯背起他的十字架跟从我的人不配做我的门徒。 39 试图保全自己生命的反而会失去生命，但为我舍弃生命的反而会得到生命。
得赏赐
40 “人接待你们就是接待我，接待我就是接待差我来的那位。 41 因为某人是先知而接待他的，必得到和先知一样的赏赐；因为某人是义人而接待他的，必得到和义人一样的赏赐。 42 人若接待我门徒中最卑微的人，并因为他是我的门徒而给他一杯凉水喝，我实在告诉你们，那人必得到赏赐。”

Giving to the Needy
6 “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them.(A) If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.
2 “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.(B)
Prayer(C)
5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing(D) in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father,(E) who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling(F) like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.(G) 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need(H) before you ask him.
9 “This, then, is how you should pray:

hallowed be your name,

Fasting
16 “When you fast,(R) do not look somber(S) as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18 so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.(T)
Treasures in Heaven(U)
19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth,(V) where moths and vermin destroy,(W) and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven,(X) where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.(Y) 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.(Z)
22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy,[c] your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eyes are unhealthy,[d] your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.(AA)
Do Not Worry(AB)
25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry(AC) about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.(AD) Are you not much more valuable than they?(AE) 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[e]?(AF)
28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor(AG) was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?(AH) 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.(AI) 33 But seek first his kingdom(AJ) and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.(AK) 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
Judging Others(AL)
7 “Do not judge, or you too will be judged.(AM) 2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.(AN)
3 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 4 How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
6 “Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.
Ask, Seek, Knock(AO)
7 “Ask and it will be given to you;(AP) seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds;(AQ) and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
9 “Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts(AR) to those who ask him! 12 So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you,(AS) for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.(AT)
The Narrow and Wide Gates
13 “Enter through the narrow gate.(AU) For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.
True and False Prophets
15 “Watch out for false prophets.(AV) They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.(AW) 16 By their fruit you will recognize them.(AX) Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?(AY) 17 Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.(AZ) 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.(BA) 20 Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.
True and False Disciples
21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’(BB) will enter the kingdom of heaven,(BC) but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.(BD) 22 Many will say to me on that day,(BE) ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’(BF) 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’(BG)
The Wise and Foolish Builders(BH)
24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice(BI) is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
28 When Jesus had finished saying these things,(BJ) the crowds were amazed at his teaching,(BK) 29 because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.
Jesus Heals a Man With Leprosy(BL)
8 When Jesus came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. 2 A man with leprosy[f](BM) came and knelt before him(BN) and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”
3 Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy. 4 Then Jesus said to him, “See that you don’t tell anyone.(BO) But go, show yourself to the priest(BP) and offer the gift Moses commanded,(BQ) as a testimony to them.”
The Faith of the Centurion(BR)
5 When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. 6 “Lord,” he said, “my servant lies at home paralyzed,(BS) suffering terribly.”
7 Jesus said to him, “Shall I come and heal him?”
8 The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed.(BT) 9 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
10 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.(BU) 11 I say to you that many will come from the east and the west,(BV) and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.(BW) 12 But the subjects of the kingdom(BX) will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”(BY)
13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go! Let it be done just as you believed it would.”(BZ) And his servant was healed at that moment.
Jesus Heals Many(CA)
14 When Jesus came into Peter’s house, he saw Peter’s mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. 15 He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him.
16 When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick.(CB) 17 This was to fulfill(CC) what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:
The Cost of Following Jesus(CE)
18 When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake.(CF) 19 Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”
20 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man(CG) has no place to lay his head.”
21 Another disciple said to him, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”
22 But Jesus told him, “Follow me,(CH) and let the dead bury their own dead.”
Jesus Calms the Storm(CI)(CJ)
23 Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24 Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”
26 He replied, “You of little faith,(CK) why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.(CL)
27 The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”
Jesus Restores Two Demon-Possessed Men(CM)
28 When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes,[h] two demon-possessed(CN) men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way. 29 “What do you want with us,(CO) Son of God?” they shouted. “Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?”(CP)
30 Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding. 31 The demons begged Jesus, “If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.”
32 He said to them, “Go!” So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water. 33 Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. 34 Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region.(CQ)
Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralyzed Man(CR)
9 Jesus stepped into a boat, crossed over and came to his own town.(CS) 2 Some men brought to him a paralyzed man,(CT) lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith,(CU) he said to the man, “Take heart,(CV) son; your sins are forgiven.”(CW)
3 At this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves, “This fellow is blaspheming!”(CX)
4 Knowing their thoughts,(CY) Jesus said, “Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts? 5 Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 6 But I want you to know that the Son of Man(CZ) has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “Get up, take your mat and go home.” 7 Then the man got up and went home. 8 When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God,(DA) who had given such authority to man.
The Calling of Matthew(DB)
9 As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,”(DC) he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.
10 While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples. 11 When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”(DD)
12 On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 13 But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’[i](DE) For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”(DF)
Jesus Questioned About Fasting(DG)
14 Then John’s(DH) disciples came and asked him, “How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often,(DI) but your disciples do not fast?”
15 Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them?(DJ) The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.(DK)
16 “No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse. 17 Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.”
Jesus Raises a Dead Girl and Heals a Sick Woman(DL)
18 While he was saying this, a synagogue leader came and knelt before him(DM) and said, “My daughter has just died. But come and put your hand on her,(DN) and she will live.” 19 Jesus got up and went with him, and so did his disciples.
20 Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak.(DO) 21 She said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.”
22 Jesus turned and saw her. “Take heart,(DP) daughter,” he said, “your faith has healed you.”(DQ) And the woman was healed at that moment.(DR)
23 When Jesus entered the synagogue leader’s house and saw the noisy crowd and people playing pipes,(DS) 24 he said, “Go away. The girl is not dead(DT) but asleep.”(DU) But they laughed at him. 25 After the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took the girl by the hand, and she got up.(DV) 26 News of this spread through all that region.(DW)
Jesus Heals the Blind and the Mute
27 As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, calling out, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!”(DX)
28 When he had gone indoors, the blind men came to him, and he asked them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?”
“Yes, Lord,” they replied.(DY)
29 Then he touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith let it be done to you”;(DZ) 30 and their sight was restored. Jesus warned them sternly, “See that no one knows about this.”(EA) 31 But they went out and spread the news about him all over that region.(EB)
32 While they were going out, a man who was demon-possessed(EC) and could not talk(ED) was brought to Jesus. 33 And when the demon was driven out, the man who had been mute spoke. The crowd was amazed and said, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.”(EE)
34 But the Pharisees said, “It is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons.”(EF)
The Workers Are Few
35 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness.(EG) 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them,(EH) because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.(EI) 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest(EJ) is plentiful but the workers are few.(EK) 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”
Jesus Sends Out the Twelve(EL)(EM)(EN)(EO)(EP)
10 Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits(EQ) and to heal every disease and sickness.(ER)
2 These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.(ES)
5 These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans.(ET) 6 Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel.(EU) 7 As you go, proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven(EV) has come near.’ 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy,[j] drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.
9 “Do not get any gold or silver or copper to take with you in your belts(EW)— 10 no bag for the journey or extra shirt or sandals or a staff, for the worker is worth his keep.(EX) 11 Whatever town or village you enter, search there for some worthy person and stay at their house until you leave. 12 As you enter the home, give it your greeting.(EY) 13 If the home is deserving, let your peace rest on it; if it is not, let your peace return to you. 14 If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet.(EZ) 15 Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah(FA) on the day of judgment(FB) than for that town.(FC)
16 “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves.(FD) Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.(FE) 17 Be on your guard; you will be handed over to the local councils(FF) and be flogged in the synagogues.(FG) 18 On my account you will be brought before governors and kings(FH) as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles. 19 But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it.(FI) At that time you will be given what to say, 20 for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father(FJ) speaking through you.
21 “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents(FK) and have them put to death.(FL) 22 You will be hated by everyone because of me,(FM) but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.(FN) 23 When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. Truly I tell you, you will not finish going through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.(FO)
24 “The student is not above the teacher, nor a servant above his master.(FP) 25 It is enough for students to be like their teachers, and servants like their masters. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul,(FQ) how much more the members of his household!
26 “So do not be afraid of them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.(FR) 27 What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs. 28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One(FS) who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care.[k] 30 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.(FT) 31 So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.(FU)
32 “Whoever acknowledges me before others,(FV) I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. 33 But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.(FW)
34 “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to turn
“‘a man against his father,
a daughter against her mother,
a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law(FX)—
36 a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’[l](FY)
37 “Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.(FZ) 38 Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me.(GA) 39 Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.(GB)
40 “Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me,(GC) and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.(GD) 41 Whoever welcomes a prophet as a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever welcomes a righteous person as a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward. 42 And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.”(GE)
