不肯接待耶稣的村庄
51 耶稣被接回天家的日子快到了，祂决定前往耶路撒冷。 52 祂先派人到撒玛利亚的一个村庄去预备食宿， 53 但撒玛利亚人见他们是上耶路撒冷去的，不肯接待他们。 54 祂的门徒雅各和约翰见状，说：“主啊，你要我们[a]叫天上的火降下来烧死他们吗？” 55 耶稣转过身来责备他们[b]。 56 接着，一行人改道去另一个村子。
跟从主的代价
57 在路上有人对耶稣说：“无论你往哪里去，我都要跟从你。”
58 耶稣对他说：“狐狸有洞，飞鸟有窝，人子却没有安枕之处。”
59 耶稣又对另一个人说：“跟从我！”但是那人说：“主啊，请让我先回去安葬我的父亲。”
60 耶稣说：“让死人去埋葬他们的死人吧，你只管去传扬上帝国的福音。”
61 又有一个人说：“主啊！我愿意跟从你，但请让我先回去向家人告别。”
62 耶稣说：“手扶着犁向后看的人不配进上帝的国。”
差遣门徒
10 事后，主拣选了七十个门徒[c]，差遣他们两个两个地出去，先到祂将要去的城镇村庄， 2 并对他们说：“要收割的庄稼很多，工人却很少，因此你们要祈求庄稼的主人派更多的工人去收割祂的庄稼。
3 “你们去吧！我差你们出去，就像把羊羔送入狼群。 4 钱袋、背包和鞋都不要带，在路上也不要与人寒暄。 5 无论到哪一户人家，要先说，‘愿祝福临到这家！’ 6 如果那里有配得祝福的人，祝福自然会临到那人，否则祝福仍归给你们。 7 不要搬来搬去，要固定住在一家，接受那家的款待，因为工人理应得到工钱。
8 “你们无论到哪一个城镇，如果人们接待你们，就吃他们摆上的饮食。 9 要医治那城里的病人，告诉他们，‘上帝的国临近你们了。’ 10 但如果哪一个城镇的人不欢迎你们，你们就到街上宣告， 11 ‘就连你们城里的尘土粘在我们脚上，我们都要跺掉，但是要知道，上帝的国临近了。’ 12 我告诉你们，在审判之日，那城所受的刑罚将比所多玛所受的还重！
13 “哥拉汛啊，你大祸临头了！伯赛大啊，你大祸临头了！我在你们当中所行的神迹，如果行在泰尔和西顿，那里的人早就身披麻衣，头蒙灰尘，坐在地上悔改了。 14 在审判之日，你们将比泰尔和西顿受更重的刑罚！
15 “迦百农啊，你将被提升到天上吗？不！你将被打落到阴间。”
16 耶稣继续对门徒说：“谁听从你们，就是听从我；谁拒绝你们，就是拒绝我；拒绝我的，就是拒绝差我来的那位。”
17 七十个门徒兴高采烈地回来说：“主啊，我们奉你的名行事，甚至降服了鬼魔。”
18 耶稣回答说：“我看见撒旦像闪电一样从天上坠下。 19 我已经给你们权柄，使你们能践踏蛇和蝎子，胜过仇敌的权势，没有什么能伤害你们。 20 然而，不要为了邪灵向你们降服而高兴，要因你们的名字记录在天上而高兴。”
21 就在这时候，耶稣受圣灵感动，充满喜乐地说：“父啊，天地的主，我颂赞你！因为你把这些事向聪明、有学问的人隐藏起来，却启示给像孩童一般的人。父啊！是的，这正是你的美意。 22 我父将一切交给了我。除了父，没有人认识子；除了子和受子启示的人，没有人认识父。”
23 随后，耶稣转身悄悄地对门徒说：“谁看到你们今日所看到的，谁就有福了。 24 我告诉你们，以前有许多先知和君王渴望看见你们所看见的，听见你们所听见的，却未能如愿。”
好撒玛利亚人的比喻
25 有一次，一名律法教师站起来试探耶稣，说：“老师，我应该怎样做才能得永生呢？”
26 耶稣反问他：“律法怎么说？你怎么理解？”
27 律法教师答道：“‘你要全心、全情、全力、全意爱主——你的上帝’，又要‘爱邻如己’。” 28 耶稣说：“你答得对，照着去做就有永生了。”
29 律法教师想证明自己有理，就问：“那么，谁是我的邻居呢？”
30 耶稣回答说：“有个人从耶路撒冷去耶利哥，途中被劫。强盗剥了他的衣服，把他打个半死，丢在那里，然后扬长而去。
31 “刚好有位祭司经过，看见那人躺在地上，连忙从旁边绕过，继续赶路。 32 又有个利未人经过，也跟先前那个祭司一样从旁边绕过去了。
33 “后来，有位撒玛利亚人[d]经过，看见这个人，就动了慈心， 34 连忙上前用油和酒替他敷伤口，包扎妥当，然后把他扶上自己骑的牲口，带到附近的客店照料。 35 次日还交给店主两个银币，说，‘请替我好好照顾这个人。如果钱不够的话，等我回来再补给你。’ 36 那么，你认为这三个人中谁是被劫者的邻居呢？”
37 律法教师说：“是那个同情他的人。”
耶稣说：“你去照样做吧。”
上好的福分
38 耶稣和门徒去耶路撒冷的途中路过一个村庄，遇到一位名叫玛大的女子接待他们到家里作客。 39 玛大的妹妹玛丽亚坐在耶稣脚前听道， 40 玛大为了招待客人忙乱不已，于是上前对耶稣说：
“主啊，我妹妹让我一个人伺候大家，你都不管吗？请你叫她来帮帮我吧。”
41 耶稣对她说：“玛大，玛大，你为太多事情忧虑烦恼。 42 其实最要紧的事只有一件，玛丽亚选择了上好的，是夺不走的。”
教导门徒祷告
11 有一天，耶稣在某地祷告完毕，有个门徒对祂说：“主啊，请教导我们祷告，像约翰教他的门徒一样。”
2 耶稣对他们说：“你们应该这样祷告，
“‘天父，愿人都尊崇你的圣名，
愿你的国度降临，
愿你的旨意在地上成就，
就像在天上成就一样[e]。
3 愿你天天赐给我们日用的饮食。
4 求你饶恕我们的罪，
因为我们也饶恕那些亏欠我们的人。
不要让我们遇见诱惑，
拯救我们脱离那恶者[f]。’”
5 耶稣又对他们说：“假设你在半夜跑去朋友家请求说，‘朋友，请借给我三个饼吧， 6 因为有一位朋友远道而来，我家没有什么可以招待他。’ 7 那个人在屋里应声说，‘请别打搅我，门已经锁上了，我和孩子们也已经上床了，我不能起来给你拿饼。’
8 “我告诉你们，那人虽不念朋友之情，但是倘若你不肯罢休，继续请求，他最终会起来满足你的愿望。
9 “我告诉你们，祈求，就会给你们；寻找，就会寻见；叩门，就会给你们开门。 10 因为凡祈求的，就得到；寻找的，就寻见；叩门的，就给他开门。
11 “你们中间做父亲的，如果孩子要饼，你会给他石头吗？[g]要鱼，你会给他蛇吗？ 12 要鸡蛋，你会给他蝎子吗？ 13 你们虽然邪恶，尚且知道把好东西给儿女，天父岂不更要赐圣灵给那些求祂的人吗？”
耶稣和别西卜
14 有一次，耶稣赶出一个使人哑巴的鬼。鬼一出去，哑巴就能说话了，大家都很惊奇。 15 有人却说：“祂是靠鬼王别西卜赶鬼。” 16 还有些人想试探耶稣，要求祂行个神迹证明自己是上帝派来的。
17 耶稣知道他们的心思，就说：“一个国内部自相纷争，必然灭亡；一个家内部自相纷争，必然崩溃。 18 同样，若撒旦内部自相纷争，它的国怎能维持呢？你们说我是靠别西卜赶鬼， 19 若我是靠别西卜赶鬼，你们的子弟又是靠谁赶鬼呢？因此，他们要审判你们。 20 但若我是靠上帝的能力赶鬼，就是上帝的国已降临在你们中间了。
21 “壮汉全副武装地看守自己的住宅，他的财物会很安全。 22 但是，来了一个比他更强壮的人，把他制服后，夺去他所依靠的武装，并把他抢来的东西分给了人。 23 谁不与我为友，就是与我为敌；谁不和我一起收聚，就是故意拆散。
24 “有个污鬼离开了它以前所附的人，在干旱无水之地四处游荡，寻找安歇之处，却没有找到。于是它说，‘我要回到老地方。’ 25 它回去后，看见里面打扫得又干净又整齐， 26 就去带来了七个比自己更邪恶的鬼一起住在那里。那人的下场比从前更惨了。”
谁更有福
27 耶稣说话的时候，人群中有个妇人高喊：“生你养你的人真有福啊！”
28 耶稣回答说：“但那听了上帝的话又去遵行的人更有福。”
可悲的邪恶世代
29 这时聚集的人越来越多，耶稣说：“这是一个邪恶的世代，人们只想看神迹，但除了约拿的神迹以外，再没有神迹给他们看。 30 正如约拿成了尼尼微人的神迹，人子也要成为这世代的神迹。
31 “在审判的日子，南方的女王和这世代的人都要起来[h]，她要定这个世代的罪，因为她曾不远千里来听所罗门王的智言慧语。看啊！这里有一位比所罗门王更伟大。
32 “在审判的日子，尼尼微人和这世代的人都要起来，尼尼微人要定这个世代的罪，因为他们听到约拿的宣告，就悔改了。看啊！这里有一位比约拿更伟大。
灯的比喻
33 “没有人点了灯却将它放在地窖里或斗底下，人总是把灯放在灯台上，让进来的人可以看见光。 34 你的眼睛就是身体的灯，你的眼睛明亮，全身就光明；你的眼睛昏花，全身就黑暗。 35 因此要小心，不要让你心里的光变为黑暗。 36 如果你全身光明、毫无黑暗，你整个人就熠熠生辉，好像有灯光照在你身上。”
谴责法利赛人
37 耶稣说完这番话后，有一个法利赛人来请祂吃饭，祂便应邀入席。 38 这位法利赛人看见耶稣饭前没有行犹太人洗手的礼仪，十分诧异。 39 主对他说：“你们法利赛人洗净杯盘的外面，你们里面却充满了贪婪和邪恶。 40 愚蠢的人啊，人里外不都是上帝所创造的吗？ 41 只要你们发自内心地去施舍，一切对你们都是洁净的。
42 “法利赛人啊，你们有祸了！你们将薄荷、茴香、各样蔬菜献上十分之一，却忽略了上帝的公义和仁爱。后者是你们本该做的，前者也不可忽略。
43 “法利赛人啊，你们有祸了！你们喜欢在会堂里坐首位，又喜欢在街市上听到别人的问候。 44 你们有祸了！因为你们就像没有墓碑的坟墓，人们从上面走过也不知道。”
谴责律法教师
45 一位律法教师对耶稣说：“老师，你这话把我们也侮辱了！”
46 耶稣回答说：“你们这些律法教师也有祸了！你们把沉重难负的担子放在别人肩上，自己却连一根指头也不肯动。
47 “你们有祸了，你们为先知修造坟墓，而他们正是被你们祖先杀害的！ 48 所以你们是见证人，你们赞同祖先的行为，因为他们杀了先知，你们为先知造坟墓。 49 因此，充满智慧的上帝说，‘我要差遣先知和使徒到他们那里，有些要被杀害，有些要遭迫害’， 50-51 使创世以来，自亚伯一直到在祭坛和圣所之间被杀的撒迦利亚等众先知的血债，都由这个世代承担。我实在告诉你们，这些罪责都要由这个世代承担。
52 “律法教师啊，你们有祸了！你们拿走了知识的钥匙，自己不进去，还阻挡那些正要进去的人。”
53 耶稣离开那里后，法利赛人和律法教师开始激烈地反对祂，用各种问题刁难祂， 54 伺机找把柄陷害祂。
警戒门徒
12 这时，成千上万的人聚集在一起，甚至互相践踏。耶稣先对门徒说：“你们要提防法利赛人的酵，就是他们的伪善。 2 掩盖的事终会暴露出来，隐藏的秘密终会被人知道。 3 你们在暗处说的，将在明处被人听见；你们在密室里的私语，将在屋顶上被人宣扬。
4 “朋友们，我告诉你们，不要惧怕那些杀害人的身体后再也无计可施的人。 5 我告诉你们应该惧怕谁，要惧怕上帝——祂有权终结人的生命，并把人丢在地狱里。是的，我告诉你们，要惧怕祂！
6 “五只麻雀不是只卖两个铜钱吗？但上帝连一只麻雀也不会遗忘。 7 其实就连你们的头发都被数过了。不要害怕，你们比许多麻雀要贵重！
8 “我告诉你们，凡在人面前承认我的，人子在上帝的天使面前也必承认他。 9 凡在人面前否认我的，人子在上帝的天使面前也要否认他。 10 说话得罪人子的，还可以得到赦免，但亵渎圣灵的，必得不到赦免！ 11 当人押你们到会堂，或到官员和当权者面前时，不要顾虑如何辩解，或说什么话， 12 因为到时候圣灵必指示你们当说的话。”
无知富翁的比喻
13 这时，人群中有人对耶稣说：“老师，请你劝劝我的兄长跟我分家产吧。”
14 耶稣答道：“朋友，谁派我做你们的审判官或仲裁，为你们分家产呢？” 15 接着，祂对众人说：“你们要小心防范一切的贪心，因为人的生命并不在于家道富足。”
16 耶稣又讲了一个比喻，说：“有一个富翁，他的田里大丰收， 17 于是心里盘算，‘我储藏农产的地方不够了，怎么办呢？’ 18 于是他说，‘不如把原有的仓库拆掉，建几座更大的，好储藏我所有的粮食和财物！ 19 那时，我就可以对自己说，“你积存这么多财产，一生享用不尽，现在大可高枕无忧、尽情地吃喝玩乐吧！”’ 20 但上帝对他说，‘无知的人啊，今晚就要取走你的命！你所预备的一切留给谁享用呢？’”
21 耶稣说：“这就是那些只顾为自己积财、在上帝面前却不富足之人的写照。”
不要为衣食忧虑
22 耶稣继续对门徒说：“所以，我告诉你们，不要为生活忧虑，如吃什么，也不要为身体忧虑，如穿什么。 23 因为生命比饮食重要，身体比穿着重要。 24 你们看，乌鸦不种也不收，没仓也没库，上帝尚且养活它们，你们比飞鸟不知要贵重多少！
25 “你们谁能用忧虑使自己多活片刻呢？ 26 既然你们连这样的小事都无能为力，又何必为其余的事忧虑呢？ 27 看看百合花如何生长吧，它们既不劳苦，也不纺织，但我告诉你们，就连所罗门王最显赫时的穿戴还不如一朵百合花！
28 “野地的草今天还在，明天就要被丢在炉中，上帝还这样装扮它们，何况你们呢？你们的信心太小了！ 29 你们不要为吃什么喝什么忧虑， 30 因为这些都是外族人的追求，你们的天父知道你们需要这些。 31 你们要寻求祂的国，祂必供给你们的需要。
32 “你们这一小群人啊，不要怕！因为你们的天父乐意把祂的国赐给你们。 33 要变卖你们的家产去周济穷人，要为自己预备永不破损的钱袋，在天上积攒取之不尽的财宝，那里没有贼偷，也没有虫蛀。 34 因为你们的财宝在哪里，你们的心也在哪里。
警醒预备
35 “你们要束上腰带，准备服侍，要点亮灯， 36 像奴仆们等候主人从婚宴回来。主人回来一叩门，奴仆就可以立即给他开门。 37 主人回来，看见奴仆警醒等候，奴仆就有福了！我实在告诉你们，主人必束上腰带请他们坐席，并亲自服侍他们。 38 无论主人在深夜或黎明回家，若发现奴仆警醒等候，奴仆就有福了。
39 “你们都知道，一家的主人若预先知道贼什么时候来，一定不会让贼入屋偷窃。 40 同样，你们也要做好准备，因为在你们意想不到的时候，人子就来了。”
忠仆和恶仆
41 彼得问：“主啊！你这比喻是讲给我们听的，还是讲给众人听的呢？”
42 主说：“谁是那个受主人委托管理家中大小仆役、按时分粮食给他们、又忠心又精明的管家呢？ 43 主人回家时，看见他尽忠职守，他就有福了。 44 我实在告诉你们，主人一定会把所有产业都交给他管理。 45 但如果他以为主人不会那么快回来，就殴打仆婢、吃喝醉酒， 46 主人会在他想不到的日子、不知道的时辰回来，严厉地惩罚[i]他，使他和不忠不信的人同受严刑。 47 明知主人的意思却不准备，也不遵行主人吩咐的仆人，必受更重的责打。 48 但因不知道而做了该受惩罚之事的仆人，必少受责打。多给谁，就向谁多取；多托付谁，就向谁多要。
家庭分裂
49 “我来是要把火丢在地上，我多么希望这火已经燃烧起来。 50 我有要受的‘洗礼’，我何等迫切地想完成这‘洗礼’啊！ 51 你们以为我来是要使天下太平吗？不，我告诉你们，我来是要使地上起纷争。 52 从今以后，一家五口会彼此相争，三个人反对两个人，或是两个人反对三个人， 53 父子相争，母女对立，婆媳反目。”
明辨是非
54 然后，祂又对众人说：“你们看见云从西方升起，就说，‘快下雨了！’果然如此。 55 南风一起，你们就说，‘天必燥热’，你们也说对了。 56 你们这些伪善的人！既然知道观察天色、预测天气，为什么不知道观察这个世代呢？ 57 你们为什么不自己明辨是非呢？ 58 如果你和控告你的人要去对薄公堂，要尽量在路上跟对方和解，以免被拉到审判官面前，审判官派差役把你关进监牢。 59 我告诉你，除非你付清所欠的每一分钱，否则休想出监牢。”
不悔改的下场
13 这时，有人把加利利人献祭时被彼拉多屠杀的事告诉了耶稣。
2 耶稣说：“你们以为这些人被杀，是因为他们的罪比其他加利利人的罪更重吗？ 3 不！我告诉你们，你们若不悔改，同样也必灭亡。 4 西罗亚楼倒塌时曾压死了十八个人。你们以为他们比耶路撒冷其他人更有罪吗？ 5 不！我告诉你们，你们若不悔改，同样也必灭亡。”
6 于是，耶稣说了一个比喻：“有人在葡萄园里种了一棵无花果树，他去树那里找果子，却找不到。 7 他对园丁说，‘三年来，我一直盼望它结果子，它却一个也没结。把它砍了，免得白占土地。’
8 “园丁请求说，‘主人，再留它一年吧！让我在它四周松土、施肥， 9 明年如果结了果子就留它，否则再砍掉它。’”
治好驼背妇人
10 有个安息日，耶稣在会堂里讲道。 11 那里有个妇人被邪灵缠身十八年，腰弯得很厉害，无法站直。 12 耶稣看见她，便叫她过来，说：“妇人，你再不会被疾病缠身了！” 13 耶稣双手按在她身上，她的腰立刻直了，便颂赞上帝。
14 会堂主管看到耶稣在安息日为人治病，十分恼怒，就对众人说：“一周有六天可以工作，求医应当在这六天之内，不可在安息日！”
15 主说：“你们这些伪君子，莫非你们在安息日不解开棚里的牛和驴，带它们去喝水吗？ 16 这妇人身为亚伯拉罕的女儿，受撒旦的捆绑十八年，难道不该在安息日为她解开捆索吗？” 17 反对祂的人听了这番话后，都非常羞愧，众人却为耶稣的奇妙作为高兴欢喜。
上帝国的比喻
18 耶稣继续说：“上帝的国好像什么呢？我该把上帝的国比作什么呢？ 19 上帝的国就像一粒芥菜种，有人把它种在园里，它长成了一棵树，连飞鸟也来栖息在它的树枝上。”
20 耶稣又说：“我该把上帝的国比作什么呢？ 21 上帝的国就像面酵，妇人拿来掺在三斗面里，使整团面都发起来。”

51 As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven,(A) Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.(B) 52 And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan(C) village to get things ready for him; 53 but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. 54 When the disciples James and John(D) saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them[a]?”(E) 55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them. 56 Then he and his disciples went to another village.
The Cost of Following Jesus(F)
57 As they were walking along the road,(G) a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.”
58 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man(H) has no place to lay his head.”
59 He said to another man, “Follow me.”(I)
But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”
60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”(J)
61 Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.”(K)
62 Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”
Jesus Sends Out the Seventy-Two(L)(M)(N)
10 After this the Lord(O) appointed seventy-two[b] others(P) and sent them two by two(Q) ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go.(R) 2 He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.(S) 3 Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.(T) 4 Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road.
5 “When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ 6 If someone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them; if not, it will return to you. 7 Stay there, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages.(U) Do not move around from house to house.
8 “When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is offered to you.(V) 9 Heal the sick who are there and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God(W) has come near to you.’ 10 But when you enter a town and are not welcomed, go into its streets and say, 11 ‘Even the dust of your town we wipe from our feet as a warning to you.(X) Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God has come near.’(Y) 12 I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom(Z) than for that town.(AA)
13 “Woe to you,(AB) Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth(AC) and ashes. 14 But it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you. 15 And you, Capernaum,(AD) will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.[c]
16 “Whoever listens to you listens to me; whoever rejects you rejects me; but whoever rejects me rejects him who sent me.”(AE)
17 The seventy-two(AF) returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.”(AG)
18 He replied, “I saw Satan(AH) fall like lightning from heaven.(AI) 19 I have given you authority to trample on snakes(AJ) and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. 20 However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”(AK)
21 At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.(AL) Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.
22 “All things have been committed to me by my Father.(AM) No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”(AN)
23 Then he turned to his disciples and said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. 24 For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.”(AO)
The Parable of the Good Samaritan(AP)
25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”(AQ)
26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?”
27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’[d];(AR) and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[e]”(AS)
28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.”(AT)
29 But he wanted to justify himself,(AU) so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
30 In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side.(AV) 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan,(AW) as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii[f] and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’
36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”
37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”
Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”
At the Home of Martha and Mary
38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha(AX) opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary,(AY) who sat at the Lord’s feet(AZ) listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care(BA) that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried(BB) and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one.[g](BC) Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Jesus’ Teaching on Prayer(BD)(BE)
11 One day Jesus was praying(BF) in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord,(BG) teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”
2 He said to them, “When you pray, say:
“‘Father,[h]
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom(BH) come.[i]
3 Give us each day our daily bread.
4 Forgive us our sins,
for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.[j](BI)
And lead us not into temptation.[k]’”(BJ)
5 Then Jesus said to them, “Suppose you have a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread; 6 a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have no food to offer him.’ 7 And suppose the one inside answers, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children and I are in bed. I can’t get up and give you anything.’ 8 I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity[l] he will surely get up and give you as much as you need.(BK)
9 “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you;(BL) seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
11 “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for[m] a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
Jesus and Beelzebul(BM)(BN)
14 Jesus was driving out a demon that was mute. When the demon left, the man who had been mute spoke, and the crowd was amazed.(BO) 15 But some of them said, “By Beelzebul,(BP) the prince of demons, he is driving out demons.”(BQ) 16 Others tested him by asking for a sign from heaven.(BR)
17 Jesus knew their thoughts(BS) and said to them: “Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall. 18 If Satan(BT) is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand? I say this because you claim that I drive out demons by Beelzebul. 19 Now if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your followers drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. 20 But if I drive out demons by the finger of God,(BU) then the kingdom of God(BV) has come upon you.
21 “When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are safe. 22 But when someone stronger attacks and overpowers him, he takes away the armor in which the man trusted and divides up his plunder.
23 “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.(BW)
24 “When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ 25 When it arrives, it finds the house swept clean and put in order. 26 Then it goes and takes seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first.”(BX)
27 As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out, “Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you.”(BY)
28 He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God(BZ) and obey it.”(CA)
The Sign of Jonah(CB)
29 As the crowds increased, Jesus said, “This is a wicked generation. It asks for a sign,(CC) but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.(CD) 30 For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of Man be to this generation. 31 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the people of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom;(CE) and now something greater than Solomon is here. 32 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah;(CF) and now something greater than Jonah is here.
The Lamp of the Body(CG)
33 “No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light.(CH) 34 Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy,[n] your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy,[o] your body also is full of darkness. 35 See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness. 36 Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be just as full of light as when a lamp shines its light on you.”
Woes on the Pharisees and the Experts in the Law
37 When Jesus had finished speaking, a Pharisee invited him to eat with him; so he went in and reclined at the table.(CI) 38 But the Pharisee was surprised when he noticed that Jesus did not first wash before the meal.(CJ)
39 Then the Lord(CK) said to him, “Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness.(CL) 40 You foolish people!(CM) Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also? 41 But now as for what is inside you—be generous to the poor,(CN) and everything will be clean for you.(CO)
42 “Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth(CP) of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God.(CQ) You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone.(CR)
43 “Woe to you Pharisees, because you love the most important seats in the synagogues and respectful greetings in the marketplaces.(CS)
44 “Woe to you, because you are like unmarked graves,(CT) which people walk over without knowing it.”
45 One of the experts in the law(CU) answered him, “Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us also.”
46 Jesus replied, “And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them.(CV)
47 “Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your ancestors who killed them. 48 So you testify that you approve of what your ancestors did; they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs.(CW) 49 Because of this, God in his wisdom(CX) said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.’(CY) 50 Therefore this generation will be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the beginning of the world, 51 from the blood of Abel(CZ) to the blood of Zechariah,(DA) who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible for it all.(DB)
52 “Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering.”(DC)
53 When Jesus went outside, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to oppose him fiercely and to besiege him with questions, 54 waiting to catch him in something he might say.(DD)
Warnings and Encouragements(DE)
12 Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, saying: “Be[p] on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.(DF) 2 There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.(DG) 3 What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs.
4 “I tell you, my friends,(DH) do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. 5 But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after your body has been killed, has authority to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him.(DI) 6 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. 7 Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered.(DJ) Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.(DK)
8 “I tell you, whoever publicly acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before the angels of God.(DL) 9 But whoever disowns me before others will be disowned(DM) before the angels of God. 10 And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man(DN) will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.(DO)
11 “When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say,(DP) 12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.”(DQ)
The Parable of the Rich Fool
13 Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”
14 Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?” 15 Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”(DR)
16 And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. 17 He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’
18 “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. 19 And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’
20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool!(DS) This very night your life will be demanded from you.(DT) Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’(DU)
21 “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”(DV)
Do Not Worry(DW)
22 Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. 24 Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them.(DX) And how much more valuable you are than birds! 25 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life[q]? 26 Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?
27 “Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor(DY) was dressed like one of these. 28 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith!(DZ) 29 And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. 30 For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father(EA) knows that you need them.(EB) 31 But seek his kingdom,(EC) and these things will be given to you as well.(ED)
32 “Do not be afraid,(EE) little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.(EF) 33 Sell your possessions and give to the poor.(EG) Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven(EH) that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.(EI) 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.(EJ)
Watchfulness(EK)(EL)
35 “Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, 36 like servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him. 37 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes.(EM) Truly I tell you, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them.(EN) 38 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the middle of the night or toward daybreak. 39 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief(EO) was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. 40 You also must be ready,(EP) because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.”
41 Peter asked, “Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to everyone?”
42 The Lord(EQ) answered, “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time? 43 It will be good for that servant whom the master finds doing so when he returns. 44 Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. 45 But suppose the servant says to himself, ‘My master is taking a long time in coming,’ and he then begins to beat the other servants, both men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk. 46 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of.(ER) He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers.
47 “The servant who knows the master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows.(ES) 48 But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows.(ET) From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.
Not Peace but Division(EU)
49 “I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! 50 But I have a baptism(EV) to undergo, and what constraint I am under until it is completed!(EW) 51 Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. 52 From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three. 53 They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”(EX)
Interpreting the Times
54 He said to the crowd: “When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, ‘It’s going to rain,’ and it does.(EY) 55 And when the south wind blows, you say, ‘It’s going to be hot,’ and it is. 56 Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don’t know how to interpret this present time?(EZ)
57 “Why don’t you judge for yourselves what is right? 58 As you are going with your adversary to the magistrate, try hard to be reconciled on the way, or your adversary may drag you off to the judge, and the judge turn you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison.(FA) 59 I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.”(FB)
Repent or Perish
13 Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate(FC) had mixed with their sacrifices. 2 Jesus answered, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way?(FD) 3 I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. 4 Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam(FE) fell on them—do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? 5 I tell you, no! But unless you repent,(FF) you too will all perish.”
6 Then he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it but did not find any.(FG) 7 So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, ‘For three years now I’ve been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Cut it down!(FH) Why should it use up the soil?’
8 “‘Sir,’ the man replied, ‘leave it alone for one more year, and I’ll dig around it and fertilize it. 9 If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.’”
Jesus Heals a Crippled Woman on the Sabbath
10 On a Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues,(FI) 11 and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years.(FJ) She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. 12 When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, “Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.” 13 Then he put his hands on her,(FK) and immediately she straightened up and praised God.
14 Indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath,(FL) the synagogue leader(FM) said to the people, “There are six days for work.(FN) So come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath.”
15 The Lord answered him, “You hypocrites! Doesn’t each of you on the Sabbath untie your ox or donkey from the stall and lead it out to give it water?(FO) 16 Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham,(FP) whom Satan(FQ) has kept bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her?”
17 When he said this, all his opponents were humiliated,(FR) but the people were delighted with all the wonderful things he was doing.
The Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Yeast(FS)(FT)
18 Then Jesus asked, “What is the kingdom of God(FU) like?(FV) What shall I compare it to? 19 It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden. It grew and became a tree,(FW) and the birds perched in its branches.”(FX)
20 Again he asked, “What shall I compare the kingdom of God to? 21 It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds[r] of flour until it worked all through the dough.”(FY)

14 And he was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb spake; and the people wondered.
15 But some of them said, He casteth out devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils.
16 And others, tempting him, sought of him a sign from heaven.
17 But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth.
18 If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub.
19 And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore shall they be your judges.
20 But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you.
21 When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace:
22 But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils.
23 He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth.
24 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out.
25 And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished.
26 Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first.
27 And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked.
28 But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.
29 And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, This is an evil generation: they seek a sign; and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet.
30 For as Jonas was a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation.
31 The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and condemn them: for she came from the utmost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.
32 The men of Nineve shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.
33 No man, when he hath lighted a candle, putteth it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they which come in may see the light.
34 The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness.
35 Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness.
36 If thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth give thee light.
37 And as he spake, a certain Pharisee besought him to dine with him: and he went in, and sat down to meat.
38 And when the Pharisee saw it, he marvelled that he had not first washed before dinner.
39 And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness.
40 Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without make that which is within also?
41 But rather give alms of such things as ye have; and, behold, all things are clean unto you.
42 But woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
43 Woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye love the uppermost seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets.
44 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are as graves which appear not, and the men that walk over them are not aware of them.
45 Then answered one of the lawyers, and said unto him, Master, thus saying thou reproachest us also.
46 And he said, Woe unto you also, ye lawyers! for ye lade men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers.
47 Woe unto you! for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and your fathers killed them.
48 Truly ye bear witness that ye allow the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and ye build their sepulchres.
49 Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall slay and persecute:
50 That the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation;
51 From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias which perished between the altar and the temple: verily I say unto you, It shall be required of this generation.
52 Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye have taken away the key of knowledge: ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered.
53 And as he said these things unto them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to urge him vehemently, and to provoke him to speak of many things:
54 Laying wait for him, and seeking to catch something out of his mouth, that they might accuse him.
12 In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
2 For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known.
3 Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops.
4 And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.
5 But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.
6 Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?
7 But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.
8 Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God:
9 But he that denieth me before men shall be denied before the angels of God.
10 And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven.
11 And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say:
12 For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say.
13 And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me.
14 And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you?
15 And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.
16 And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:
17 And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?
18 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.
19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.
20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?
21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.
22 And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on.
23 The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment.
24 Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls?
25 And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit?
26 If ye then be not able to do that thing which is least, why take ye thought for the rest?
27 Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
28 If then God so clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith?
29 And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind.
30 For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things.
31 But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you.
32 Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.
33 Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth.
34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
35 Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning;
36 And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately.
37 Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them.
38 And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants.
39 And this know, that if the goodman of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched, and not have suffered his house to be broken through.
40 Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not.
41 Then Peter said unto him, Lord, speakest thou this parable unto us, or even to all?
42 And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season?
43 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.
44 Of a truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler over all that he hath.
45 But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken;
46 The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.
47 And that servant, which knew his lord's will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.
48 But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.
49 I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled?
50 But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished!
51 Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division:
52 For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three.
53 The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
54 And he said also to the people, When ye see a cloud rise out of the west, straightway ye say, There cometh a shower; and so it is.
55 And when ye see the south wind blow, ye say, There will be heat; and it cometh to pass.
56 Ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; but how is it that ye do not discern this time?
57 Yea, and why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right?
58 When thou goest with thine adversary to the magistrate, as thou art in the way, give diligence that thou mayest be delivered from him; lest he hale thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and the officer cast thee into prison.
59 I tell thee, thou shalt not depart thence, till thou hast paid the very last mite.
13 There were present at that season some that told him of the Galilaeans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.
2 And Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they suffered such things?
3 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.
4 Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem?
5 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.
6 He spake also this parable; A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none.
7 Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground?
8 And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it:
9 And if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down.
10 And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath.
11 And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself.
12 And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity.
13 And he laid his hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.
14 And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the sabbath day, and said unto the people, There are six days in which men ought to work: in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath day.
15 The Lord then answered him, and said, Thou hypocrite, doth not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering?
16 And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?
17 And when he had said these things, all his adversaries were ashamed: and all the people rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by him.
18 Then said he, Unto what is the kingdom of God like? and whereunto shall I resemble it?
19 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and cast into his garden; and it grew, and waxed a great tree; and the fowls of the air lodged in the branches of it.
20 And again he said, Whereunto shall I liken the kingdom of God?
21 It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.
