After this, Yeshua traveled about from town to town and village to village, proclaiming the Good News of the Kingdom of God. With him were the Twelve, and a number of women who had been healed from evil spirits and illnesses — Miryam (called Magdalit), from whom seven demons had gone out; Yochanah the wife of Herod’s finance minister Kuza; Shoshanah; and many other women who drew on their own wealth to help him.

After a large crowd had gathered from the people who kept coming to him from town after town, Yeshua told this parable: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he sowed, some fell along the path and was stepped on, and the birds flying around ate it up. Some fell on rock; and after it sprouted, it dried up from lack of moisture. Some fell in the midst of thorns, and the thorns grew up with it and choked it. But some fell into rich soil, and grew, and produced a hundred times as much as had been sown.” After saying this, he called out, “Whoever has ears to hear with, let him hear!”

His talmidim asked him what this parable might mean, 10 and he said, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the Kingdom of God; but the rest are taught in parables, so that they may look but not see, and listen but not understand.[a]

11 “The parable is this: the seed is God’s message. 12 The ones along the path are those who hear, but then the Adversary comes and takes the message out of their hearts, in order to keep them from being saved by trusting it. 13 The ones on rock are those who, when they hear the word, accept it with joy; but these have no root — they go on trusting for awhile; but when a time of testing comes, they apostatize. 14 As for what fell in the midst of thorns these are the ones who hear; but as they go along, worries and wealth and life’s gratifications crowd in and choke them, so that their fruit never matures. 15 But what fell in rich soil — these are the ones who, when they hear the message, hold onto it with a good, receptive heart; and by persevering, they bring forth a harvest.

16 “No one who has lit a lamp covers it with a bowl or puts it under a bed; no, he puts it on a stand; so that those coming in may see the light. 17 For nothing is hidden that will not be disclosed, nothing is covered up that will not be known and come out into the open. 18 Pay attention, then, to how you hear! For anyone who has something will be given more; but from anyone who has nothing, even what he seems to have will be taken away.”

19 Then Yeshua’s mother and brothers came to see him, but they couldn’t get near him because of the crowd. 20 It was reported to him, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside and want to see you.” 21 But he gave them this answer: “My mother and brothers are those who hear God’s message and act on it!”

22 One day Yeshua got into a boat with his talmidim and said to them, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.” 23 So they set out; and as they were sailing, he fell asleep. A windstorm came down on the lake, so that the boat began to fill up with water, putting them in great danger. 24 They went and woke him, saying, “Rabbi! Rabbi! We’re about to die!” He woke up, rebuked the wind and the rough water; and they calmed down, so that it was still. 25 Then he said to the talmidim, “Where is your trust?” Awestruck, they marveled, asking one another, “Who can this be, that he commands even the wind and the water, and they obey him?”

26 They sailed on and landed in the region of the Gerasenes, which is opposite the Galil. 27 As Yeshua stepped ashore, a man from the town who had demons came to meet him. For a long time he had not worn clothes; and he lived, not in a house, but in the burial caves. 28 Catching sight of Yeshua, he screamed, fell down in front of him and yelled, “Yeshua! Son of God Ha‘Elyon! What do you want with me? I beg you, don’t torture me!” 29 For Yeshua had ordered the unclean spirit to come out of the man. It had often taken hold of him — he had been kept under guard, chained hand and foot, but had broken the bonds and been driven by the demon into the desert. 30 Yeshua asked him, “What is your name?” “Legion,” he said, because many demons had entered him. 31 They begged Yeshua not to order them to go off into the Bottomless Pit.

32 Now there was a herd of many pigs, feeding on the hill; and the demons begged him to let them go into these. So he gave them permission. 33 The demons came out of the man and entered the pigs, whereupon the herd rushed down the hillside into the lake and were drowned.

34 When the swineherds saw what had happened, they fled and told it in the town and in the country; 35 and the people came out to see for themselves. They came to Yeshua and found the man out of whom the demons had gone, sitting — dressed and in his right mind — at the feet of Yeshua; and they were frightened. 36 Those who had seen it told how the formerly demonized man had been delivered.

37 Then all the people of the Gerasene district asked him to leave them, for they had been seized with great fear. So he boarded the boat and returned. 38 The man from whom the demons had gone out begged that he might go with him; but Yeshua sent him away, saying, 39 “Go back to your home and tell how much God has done for you.” He went away proclaiming throughout the whole town how much Yeshua had done for him.

40 When Yeshua got back, the crowd welcomed him; for they were all expecting him. 41 Then there came a man named Ya’ir who was president of the synagogue. Falling at Yeshua’s feet, he pleaded with him to come to his house; 42 for he had an only daughter, about twelve years old; and she was dying.

As he went, with the crowds on every side virtually choking him, 43 a woman who had had a hemorrhage for twelve years, and could not be healed by anyone, 44 came up behind him and touched the tzitzit on his robe; instantly her hemorrhaging stopped. 45 Yeshua asked, “Who touched me?” When they all denied doing it, Kefa said, “Rabbi! The crowds are hemming you in and jostling you!” 46 But Yeshua said, “Someone did touch me, because I felt power go out of me.” 47 Seeing she could not escape notice, the woman, quaking with fear, threw herself down before him and confessed in front of everyone why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed. 48 He said to her, “My daughter, your trust has saved you; go in peace.”

49 While Yeshua was still speaking, a man came from the synagogue president’s house. “Your daughter has died,” he said. “Don’t bother the rabbi any more.” 50 But on hearing this, Yeshua answered him, “Don’t be afraid! Just go on trusting, and she will be made well.” 51 When he arrived at the house, he didn’t allow anyone to go in with him except Kefa, Yochanan, Ya‘akov and the child’s father and mother 52 All the people were wailing and mourning for her; but he said, “Don’t weep; she hasn’t died, she’s sleeping.” 53 They jeered at him, since they knew she had died. 54 But he took her by the hand, called out, “Little girl, get up!” 55 and her spirit returned. She stood up at once, and he directed that something be given her to eat. 56 Her parents were astounded, but he instructed them to tell no one what had happened.

11 Ἔστιν δὲ αὕτη ἡ παραβολή· Ὁ σπόρος ἐστὶν ὁ λόγος τοῦ θεοῦ. 12 οἱ δὲ παρὰ τὴν ὁδόν εἰσιν οἱ [e]ἀκούσαντες, εἶτα ἔρχεται ὁ διάβολος καὶ αἴρει τὸν λόγον ἀπὸ τῆς καρδίας αὐτῶν, ἵνα μὴ πιστεύσαντες σωθῶσιν. 13 οἱ δὲ ἐπὶ τῆς πέτρας οἳ ὅταν ἀκούσωσιν μετὰ χαρᾶς δέχονται τὸν λόγον, καὶ οὗτοι ῥίζαν οὐκ ἔχουσιν, οἳ πρὸς καιρὸν πιστεύουσιν καὶ ἐν καιρῷ πειρασμοῦ ἀφίστανται. 14 τὸ δὲ εἰς τὰς ἀκάνθας πεσόν, οὗτοί εἰσιν οἱ ἀκούσαντες, καὶ ὑπὸ μεριμνῶν καὶ πλούτου καὶ ἡδονῶν τοῦ βίου πορευόμενοι συμπνίγονται καὶ οὐ τελεσφοροῦσιν. 15 τὸ δὲ ἐν τῇ καλῇ γῇ, οὗτοί εἰσιν οἵτινες ἐν καρδίᾳ καλῇ καὶ ἀγαθῇ ἀκούσαντες τὸν λόγον κατέχουσιν καὶ καρποφοροῦσιν ἐν ὑπομονῇ.

16 Οὐδεὶς δὲ λύχνον ἅψας καλύπτει αὐτὸν σκεύει ἢ ὑποκάτω κλίνης τίθησιν, ἀλλ’ ἐπὶ λυχνίας [f]τίθησιν, ἵνα οἱ εἰσπορευόμενοι βλέπωσιν τὸ φῶς. 17 οὐ γάρ ἐστιν κρυπτὸν ὃ οὐ φανερὸν γενήσεται, οὐδὲ ἀπόκρυφον ὃ οὐ [g]μὴ γνωσθῇ καὶ εἰς φανερὸν ἔλθῃ. 18 βλέπετε οὖν πῶς ἀκούετε· ὃς [h]ἂν γὰρ ἔχῃ, δοθήσεται αὐτῷ, καὶ ὃς [i]ἂν μὴ ἔχῃ, καὶ ὃ δοκεῖ ἔχειν ἀρθήσεται ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ.

19 [j]Παρεγένετο δὲ πρὸς αὐτὸν ἡ μήτηρ καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ, καὶ οὐκ ἠδύναντο συντυχεῖν αὐτῷ διὰ τὸν ὄχλον. 20 [k]ἀπηγγέλη δὲ [l]αὐτῷ· Ἡ μήτηρ σου καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοί σου ἑστήκασιν ἔξω ἰδεῖν [m]σε θέλοντές. 21 ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς· Μήτηρ μου καὶ ἀδελφοί μου οὗτοί εἰσιν οἱ τὸν λόγον τοῦ θεοῦ ἀκούοντες καὶ [n]ποιοῦντες.

40 [ao]Ἐν δὲ τῷ [ap]ὑποστρέφειν τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἀπεδέξατο αὐτὸν ὁ ὄχλος, ἦσαν γὰρ πάντες προσδοκῶντες αὐτόν. 41 καὶ ἰδοὺ ἦλθεν ἀνὴρ ᾧ ὄνομα Ἰάϊρος, καὶ [aq]οὗτος ἄρχων τῆς συναγωγῆς ὑπῆρχεν, καὶ πεσὼν παρὰ τοὺς πόδας [ar]τοῦ Ἰησοῦ παρεκάλει αὐτὸν εἰσελθεῖν εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ, 42 ὅτι θυγάτηρ μονογενὴς ἦν αὐτῷ ὡς ἐτῶν δώδεκα καὶ αὐτὴ ἀπέθνῃσκεν.

Ἐν δὲ τῷ ὑπάγειν αὐτὸν οἱ ὄχλοι συνέπνιγον αὐτόν. 43 καὶ γυνὴ οὖσα ἐν ῥύσει αἵματος ἀπὸ ἐτῶν δώδεκα, ἥτις [as]ἰατροῖς προσαναλώσασα ὅλον τὸν βίον οὐκ ἴσχυσεν [at]ἀπ’ οὐδενὸς θεραπευθῆναι, 44 προσελθοῦσα ὄπισθεν ἥψατο τοῦ κρασπέδου τοῦ ἱματίου αὐτοῦ, καὶ παραχρῆμα ἔστη ἡ ῥύσις τοῦ αἵματος αὐτῆς. 45 καὶ εἶπεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Τίς ὁ ἁψάμενός μου; ἀρνουμένων δὲ πάντων εἶπεν ὁ [au]Πέτρος· Ἐπιστάτα, οἱ ὄχλοι συνέχουσίν σε καὶ [av]ἀποθλίβουσιν. 46 ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν· Ἥψατό μού τις, ἐγὼ γὰρ ἔγνων δύναμιν [aw]ἐξεληλυθυῖαν ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ. 47 ἰδοῦσα δὲ ἡ γυνὴ ὅτι οὐκ ἔλαθεν τρέμουσα ἦλθεν καὶ προσπεσοῦσα αὐτῷ δι’ ἣν αἰτίαν ἥψατο αὐτοῦ [ax]ἀπήγγειλεν ἐνώπιον παντὸς τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ ὡς ἰάθη παραχρῆμα. 48 ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῇ· [ay]Θυγάτηρ, ἡ πίστις σου σέσωκέν σε· πορεύου εἰς εἰρήνην.

49 Ἔτι αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος ἔρχεταί τις παρὰ τοῦ ἀρχισυναγώγου [az]λέγων ὅτι Τέθνηκεν ἡ θυγάτηρ σου, [ba]μηκέτι σκύλλε τὸν διδάσκαλον. 50 ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἀκούσας ἀπεκρίθη [bb]αὐτῷ· Μὴ φοβοῦ, μόνον [bc]πίστευσον, καὶ σωθήσεται. 51 ἐλθὼν δὲ εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν οὐκ ἀφῆκεν εἰσελθεῖν [bd]τινα σὺν αὐτῷ εἰ μὴ Πέτρον καὶ Ἰωάννην καὶ Ἰάκωβον καὶ τὸν πατέρα τῆς παιδὸς καὶ τὴν μητέρα. 52 ἔκλαιον δὲ πάντες καὶ ἐκόπτοντο αὐτήν. ὁ δὲ εἶπεν· Μὴ κλαίετε, [be]οὐ γὰρ ἀπέθανεν ἀλλὰ καθεύδει. 53 καὶ κατεγέλων αὐτοῦ, εἰδότες ὅτι ἀπέθανεν. 54 αὐτὸς [bf]δὲ κρατήσας τῆς χειρὸς αὐτῆς ἐφώνησεν λέγων· Ἡ παῖς, [bg]ἔγειρε. 55 καὶ ἐπέστρεψεν τὸ πνεῦμα αὐτῆς, καὶ ἀνέστη παραχρῆμα, καὶ διέταξεν αὐτῇ δοθῆναι φαγεῖν. 56 καὶ ἐξέστησαν οἱ γονεῖς αὐτῆς· ὁ δὲ παρήγγειλεν αὐτοῖς μηδενὶ εἰπεῖν τὸ γεγονός.

Frauen im Kreis der Jünger Jesu

In der nun folgenden Zeit zog Jesus von Stadt zu Stadt und von Dorf zu Dorf. Überall verkündete[a] er die Botschaft vom Reich Gottes. Dabei begleiteten ihn die Zwölf sowie einige Frauen, die von bösen Geistern und von Krankheiten ´geplagt gewesen waren und` durch ihn Heilung gefunden hatten: Maria aus Magdala[b], aus der er sieben Dämonen ausgetrieben hatte, Johanna, die Frau des Chuzas, eines Beamten des Herodes, sowie Susanna und viele andere. Alle diese Frauen dienten Jesus und seinen Jüngern mit dem, was sie besaßen.

Das Gleichnis von der Saat, die auf viererlei Boden fällt

Die Menschen scharten sich in großer Zahl um Jesus, und von Ort zu Ort wurden es mehr, die mit ihm gingen[c]. Da erzählte er ihnen folgendes Gleichnis:

»Ein Bauer ging aufs Feld, um zu säen. Beim Ausstreuen der Saat fiel einiges auf den Weg[d], wo es zertreten und von den Vögeln[e] aufgepickt wurde. Einiges fiel auf felsigen Boden. Die Saat ging zwar auf, verdorrte aber bald, weil die nötige Feuchtigkeit fehlte. Einiges fiel mitten ins Dornengestrüpp. Die Dornbüsche wuchsen mit der Saat in die Höhe und erstickten sie. Und einiges fiel auf guten Boden, ging auf und brachte hundertfache Frucht.«

Jesus schloss mit dem Ausruf: »Wer Ohren hat und hören kann, der höre!«

Erklärung des Gleichnisses von der Saat

Die Jünger fragten Jesus, was dieses Gleichnis bedeute. 10 Da sagte er: »Euch ist es von Gott gegeben, die Geheimnisse seines Reiches[f] zu verstehen; den Übrigen jedoch werden sie nur in Gleichnissen verkündet. Denn

›sie sollen sehen und doch nicht sehen,
sie sollen hören und doch nichts verstehen.‹[g]

11 Das Gleichnis bedeutet Folgendes:

Die Saat ist das Wort Gottes. 12 Bei einigen, die es hören, ist es wie mit der Saat, die auf den Weg fällt. Der Teufel kommt und nimmt das Wort wieder aus ihrem Herzen weg, sodass[h] sie nicht glauben und daher auch nicht gerettet werden. 13 Bei anderen ist es wie mit der Saat, die auf felsigen Boden fällt. Wenn sie das Wort hören, nehmen sie es mit Freuden auf. Aber sie sind wie Pflanzen ohne Wurzeln; zunächst glauben sie, doch wenn eine Zeit der Prüfung[i] kommt, wenden sie sich wieder ab. 14 Wieder bei anderen ist es wie mit der Saat, die ins Dorngestrüpp fällt. Sie hören das Wort, doch im Lauf der Zeit wird es von den Sorgen, dem Reichtum und den Freuden, die das Leben bietet, verdrängt[j], sodass keine Frucht reifen kann. 15 Bei anderen jedoch ist es wie mit der Saat, die auf guten Boden fällt. Mit aufrichtigem und bereitwilligem Herzen[k] hören sie das Wort; sie halten daran fest, lassen sich nicht entmutigen und bringen Frucht.«

Der Vergleich mit der Lampe

16 »Niemand zündet eine Lampe an und verbirgt sie dann unter einem Gefäß oder stellt sie unter das Bett. Im Gegenteil: Man stellt sie auf einen Lampenständer, damit jeder, der hereinkommt, Licht hat und sehen kann[l]. 17 So gibt es auch nichts Geheimes, was geheim bleibt; alles wird offenbar werden. Und es gibt nichts Verborgenes, was verborgen bleibt; alles soll öffentlich bekannt gemacht werden[m]. 18 Achtet also darauf, wie ihr ´mit dem umgeht, was ihr` hört! Denn wer hat, dem wird gegeben; aber wer nicht hat, dem wird auch das genommen, was er zu haben meint.«

Die wahren Verwandten Jesu

19 Einmal kamen Jesu Mutter und seine Brüder und wollten ihn sprechen[n]. Doch wegen der Menschenmenge konnten sie nicht bis zu ihm durchkommen. 20 Man teilte ihm mit: »Deine Mutter und deine Brüder stehen vor dem Haus und möchten dich sehen.« 21 Doch Jesus erwiderte[o]: »Meine Mutter und meine Brüder sind alle, die das Wort Gottes hören und danach handeln.«

Der Sturm auf dem See

22 Eines Tages stieg Jesus mit seinen Jüngern ins Boot und sagte zu ihnen: »Wir wollen über den See ans andere Ufer fahren!«[p] 23 Während der Fahrt schlief Jesus ein. Plötzlich brach auf dem See ein schwerer Sturm los[q]; das Boot füllte sich mit Wasser, und sie waren in großer Gefahr. 24 Die Jünger stürzten zu Jesus und weckten ihn. »Meister, Meister«, schrien sie, »wir sind verloren!« Jesus stand auf[r] und wies den Wind und die Wellen in ihre Schranken. Da legte sich der Sturm, und es wurde ganz still. 25 »Wo bleibt euer Glaube?«, fragte Jesus seine Jünger. Sie aber sagten voll Furcht und Staunen zueinander: »Wer ist nur dieser Mann? Er befiehlt sogar dem Wind und dem Wasser, und sie gehorchen ihm.«

Heilung eines Besessenen

26 Sie legten im Gebiet der Gerasener[s] an, auf der Seite des Sees, die Galiläa gegenüberliegt. 27 Als Jesus aus dem Boot stieg und an Land ging, lief ihm ein Mann aus der ´nahegelegenen` Stadt entgegen, der von Dämonen besessen war. Er trug schon lange keine Kleider mehr und lebte abseits von den Häusern in den Grabhöhlen. 28 Als er Jesus sah, schrie er auf und warf sich vor ihm auf den Boden. Er rief mit lauter Stimme: »Was willst du von mir, Jesus, Sohn Gottes, des Allerhöchsten[t]? Ich flehe dich an: Quäle mich nicht!«

29 Denn Jesus war dem bösen Geist mit dem Befehl entgegengetreten[u], den Mann zu verlassen. Der Besessene war schon seit langer Zeit in der Gewalt des Dämons[v]; man hatte ihn zwar an Händen und Füßen gefesselt, um ihn in sicherem Gewahrsam halten zu können, doch er hatte die Ketten immer wieder zerrissen und war von dem Dämon an einsame Orte getrieben worden.

30 Nun fragte ihn Jesus: »Wie heißt du?« – »Legion[w]«, antwortete er; denn es waren viele Dämonen in ihn gefahren. 31 Diese flehten Jesus an, sie nicht in den Abgrund zu schicken.

32 Nicht weit von dort weidete am Berg eine große Herde Schweine. Die Dämonen baten Jesus, in die Schweine fahren zu dürfen. Er erlaubte es ihnen, 33 und sie verließen den Mann und fuhren in die Schweine. Da stürzte sich die ganze Herde den Abhang hinunter in den See und ertrank.

34 Als die Schweinehirten das sahen, liefen sie davon und berichteten alles in der Stadt und in den Dörfern[x]. 35 Die Leute machten sich auf den Weg, um mit eigenen Augen zu sehen, was geschehen war. Sie kamen zu Jesus und fanden den Mann, aus dem die Dämonen ausgefahren waren, zu seinen Füßen sitzen, bekleidet und bei klarem Verstand. Da bekamen sie es mit der Angst zu tun. 36 Die Augenzeugen berichteten ihnen, wie der Besessene geheilt[y] worden war. 37 Daraufhin forderte die ganze Bevölkerung von Gerasa und der Umgegend[z] Jesus auf, ihr Gebiet zu verlassen, so sehr hatte die Angst sie gepackt.

Als Jesus ins Boot stieg, um zurückzufahren, 38 bat ihn der Mann, aus dem die Dämonen ausgefahren waren, bei ihm bleiben zu dürfen. Aber Jesus schickte ihn zurück. 39 »Geh wieder zu deiner Familie[aa]«, sagte er, »und erzähle dort, was Gott für dich getan hat!« Da ging der Mann fort und verkündete in der ganzen Stadt, was Jesus für ihn getan hatte.

Heilung einer kranken Frau und Auferweckung eines Kindes

40 Als Jesus ans andere Ufer zurückkam, empfing ihn eine große Menschenmenge; alle hatten auf ihn gewartet. 41 Da kam ein Mann namens Jairus, der Vorsteher der Synagoge. Er warf sich Jesus zu Füßen und bat ihn, in sein Haus zu kommen, 42 weil sein einziges Kind, ein Mädchen von etwa zwölf Jahren, im Sterben lag.

Auf dem Weg dorthin wurde Jesus von der Menge, die sich um ihn drängte, fast erdrückt. 43 Unter den Leuten war auch eine Frau, die seit zwölf Jahren an schweren Blutungen litt. Alles, was sie besaß, hatte sie für die Ärzte ausgegeben[ab], doch niemand hatte sie heilen können. 44 Diese Frau drängte sich von hinten an Jesus heran und berührte den Saum[ac] seines Gewandes. Im selben Augenblick hörten die Blutungen auf. 45 »Wer hat mich berührt?«, fragte Jesus. Alle beteuerten, sie seien es nicht gewesen, und Petrus meinte[ad]: »Meister, die Leute drängen sich ja von allen Seiten um dich herum!« 46 Doch Jesus beharrte darauf: »Irgendjemand hat mich berührt; ich habe gespürt, dass eine Kraft von mir ausgegangen ist.« 47 Der Frau war jetzt klar, dass sie nicht unbemerkt geblieben war[ae]. Zitternd trat sie vor und warf sich vor Jesus nieder. Dann erzählte sie vor allen Leuten, warum sie ihn berührt hatte und wie sie im selben Augenblick geheilt worden war. 48 »Meine Tochter«, sagte Jesus zu ihr, »dein Glaube hat dich gerettet[af]. Geh in Frieden!«

49 Während Jesus noch mit ihr redete, kam jemand vom Haus des Synagogenvorstehers. »Deine Tochter ist gestorben«, sagte der Mann zu Jairus. »Bemühe den Meister nicht länger!« 50 Jesus hörte das. »Du brauchst dich nicht zu fürchten!«, sagte er zu dem Synagogenvorsteher. »Glaube nur, und sie wird gerettet werden.« 51 Er ging in das Haus, ließ aber niemand zu dem Mädchen mit hinein außer Petrus, Johannes und Jakobus sowie den Vater und die Mutter des Kindes. 52 Das Haus war voller Menschen, die um das Mädchen weinten und trauerten.[ag] »Hört auf zu weinen!«, sagte Jesus. »Sie ist nicht tot, sie schläft nur.« 53 Da lachten sie ihn aus, denn sie wussten sehr wohl, dass sie gestorben war. 54 Jesus aber ergriff sie bei der Hand und rief: »Kind, steh auf!« 55 Da wurde sie wieder lebendig[ah]; sie stand sofort auf, und Jesus ordnete an, ihr etwas zu essen zu geben. 56 Die Eltern konnten kaum fassen, was geschehen war. Doch Jesus verbot ihnen, jemand etwas davon zu erzählen.

Chapter 8

Hearing the Word

The Women Who Minister to Jesus. After that, Jesus journeyed through towns and villages preaching and proclaiming the kingdom of God. Traveling with him were the Twelve, [a]as well as some women who had been cured of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out; Joanna, the wife of Herod’s steward Chuza; Susanna; and many others. These women provided for them out of their own resources.

The Parable of the Sower.[b] When a large crowd gathered together as people from every town flocked to him, he said in a parable: “A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some of the seed fell along the path and was trampled upon, and the birds of the sky ate it up. Some fell on rock, and when it came up, it withered for lack of moisture. Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew with it and choked it. And some fell onto good soil, and when it grew it produced a crop of a hundredfold.”

After saying this, he cried out, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

The Purpose of Parables.[c] Then his disciples asked him what the parable meant. 10 He said, “To you has been granted knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but for others they are made known in parables, so that

‘looking they may not see,
    and hearing they may not understand.’

11 The Explanation of the Parable of the Sower.[d]“The meaning of the parable is this. The seed is the word of God. 12 The seed on the path represents those who hear, but then the devil comes and carries off the word from their hearts so that they may not come to believe and be saved. 13 Those on rock are the ones who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy. But these have no root; they believe for a short while, but in time of trial they fall away.

14 “That which has fallen among thorns are the ones who have heard, but as they go along, they are choked by the concerns and riches and pleasures of life, and they fail to produce mature fruit. 15 But that which is on rich soil are the ones who, when they have heard the word with a good and upright heart, keep it and yield a harvest through their perseverance.

16 The Parable of the Lamp.[e]“No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a pot or places it under a bed. Rather he places it on a lampstand so that those who enter may see the light. 17 For nothing is hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing is concealed that will not be made known and brought to light. 18 Take great care, therefore, about how you listen. For to the one who has, more will be given; from the one who does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken away.”

19 The True Family of Jesus.[f] Then his mother and his brethren arrived, looking for him, but they could not get near him because of the crowd. 20 He was told, “Your mother and your brethren[g] are standing outside, and they want to see you.” 21 But he replied, “My mother and my brethren are those who hear the word of God and put it into practice.”

The Progressive Revelation of the Mystery of Jesus

22 Jesus Calms the Storm.[h] One day, Jesus got into a boat with his disciples and said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side of the lake.” And so they set forth, 23 and as they sailed he fell asleep. Then a windstorm swept down on the lake. As a result, the boat was becoming filled with water, and they were in danger. 24 So they went to him and awakened him, saying, “Master! Master! We are perishing!”

Then he awakened and rebuked the wind and the turbulent waves. They subsided and there was calm. 25 He said to them, “Where is your faith?” They were filled with fear and a sense of awe, and they said to one another, “Who can this be? He gives orders to the winds and the water, and they obey him.”

26 Jesus Casts Out a Legion of Demons.[i] Then they sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. 27 As he stepped ashore, he was approached by a man from the town who was possessed by demons. For a long time he had worn no clothes. Moreover, he did not live in a house but among the tombs.

28 When the man caught sight of Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore you, do not torment me!” 29 For he had ordered the unclean spirit to come out of the man. Many times in the past it had seized him, and on such occasions they used to restrain him with chains and shackles, but he would manage to break loose and be driven by the demon into the wilds.

30 Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” “Legion,” he replied, for many demons had entered him. 31 And they begged him not to order them to go back into the abyss.

32 Now on the mountainside a large herd of pigs was feeding, and they pleaded with him to let them go into the pigs. He allowed this. 33 The demons then came out of the man and entered the pigs. Thereupon the herd charged down the steep bank into the lake and drowned.

34 When those tending the herd saw what had occurred, they ran off and reported the incident in the town and throughout the countryside. 35 As a result, people came out to see what had happened. When they came near Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out sitting at Jesus’ feet, fully clothed and in his right mind, and they were frightened.

36 Those who had been eye-witnesses to the incident told how the one who had been possessed by demons had been healed. 37 Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to depart from them, for they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and went away.

38 The man from whom the demons had gone out pleaded that he be allowed to go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, 39 “Return to your home and give witness to what God has done for you.” He then departed, proclaiming throughout the town what Jesus had done for him.

40 Jesus Heals a Woman and Raises a Child.[j] When Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed him, for they had all been waiting for him. 41 Then a man named Jairus, a leader of the synagogue, came forward. Throwing himself at the feet of Jesus, he pleaded with him to come to his house, 42 because he had an only daughter, about twelve years old, who was dying. And as Jesus went forth, the crowds were pressing in on him.

43 There was a woman who had been suffering from bleeding for twelve years, but no one had been able to cure her affliction. 44 Coming up behind him, she touched the fringe of his cloak, and her bleeding stopped immediately.

45 Jesus then asked, “Who was it who touched me?” When everyone denied doing so, Peter said, “Master, the crowds are surrounding you and pressing closely upon you.” 46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me, for I could sense power going out from me.”

47 When the woman realized that she had not escaped notice, she came forward, trembling, and knelt down before him. In the presence of all the people, she related why she had touched him and how she had been healed immediately. 48 Then Jesus said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.”

49 While he was still speaking, someone came from the house of the synagogue leader and said, “Your daughter has died. Do not bother the Teacher any further.” 50 When Jesus heard this, he said, “Do not be afraid. Just have faith, and she will be saved.”

51 When he arrived at the house, he permitted no one to go in with him except Peter, John, and James, and the child’s father and mother. 52 Everyone was weeping and mourning for her, but he said, “Stop your weeping! She is not dead; she is asleep.” 53 They laughed at him because they knew that she had died.

54 However, Jesus took her by the hand and called out to her, “Little child, arise.” 55 Her spirit returned, and she stood up at once. Then Jesus directed that she be given something to eat. 56 Her parents were stunned, but he gave them strict instructions to tell no one what had happened.

  1. Luke 8:2 Some women belong to the group of disciples; this was an occurrence quite rare at that period. As for Mary of Magdala (Mary Magdalene), the expression “seven demons” suggests some violent illness with symptoms that were disconcerting for a woman.
  2. Luke 8:4 Since the time of the Prophets, harvesting was a current image of the Judgment (Joel 4:13). Sowing evokes the activity of Jesus. Jesus knows from experience that preaching the Gospel converts only hearts that are well disposed. Nevertheless, he underlines with optimism the growth of the seed: despite all risks and obstacles, the Word of God will make progress among human beings.
  3. Luke 8:9 At the moment, only the disciples are sensitive to the riches of the Gospel; the others do not yet have a free heart. See also note on Mt 13:11.
  4. Luke 8:11 In the meditation of the early communities, the parable of the sower becomes a lesson for the believer. In daily life, in trials, in the pleasures of life, the work of the demon is an obstacle to the Gospel. Jesus knows this. He also knows the generosity of which humans are capable. He puts us on guard but also calls us to make a persevering effort to let our life be transformed by his teachings.
  5. Luke 8:16 Are the mysteries of the kingdom definitively denied to others (v. 10)? No. The secret is not forever. Soon the disciples will bring the message to all people (see Lk 12:1-12). How will they receive it? We will be judged on the yield of the Word in our life (see Lk 19:25-26).
  6. Luke 8:19 The true family of Jesus is made up of those who hearken to the Word. Luke places this episode as a conclusion to the texts on receiving the Gospel. Belonging to Jesus is the joy of the believer.

  8. Luke 8:22 God alone is master of the sea (see Pss 65:7; 89:10; 107:25-28). The authority of Jesus over the unleashed elements shows his power divine.
  9. Luke 8:26 The incident is meant to show that Jesus is stronger than all the forces of evil lumped together, the forces of Satan himself. Jesus goes to face these forces in a pagan region east of the Lake of Tiberias, where, it was thought, Satan must be reigning supreme. There is a herd of pigs there, animals unclean in Jewish eyes; the herd dashes over the cliff, signifying the return of the demons to their hell.
  10. Luke 8:40 This episode places before us two distressed people. The first is a father on the verge of losing his young daughter, with the rites of mourning under the specter of death already organized. The second is a woman humiliated by a sickness that carries the stigma of legal impurity, preventing her from participating in religious services and from approaching the Prophet (see Lev 15:19-27). Jesus intervenes in their distress and manifests his power and goodness, both of which are those of God. Nevertheless, he refuses to give his intervention a dramatic character; the only witnesses of the girl’s raising from the dead—described in the same way as the action of Elijah (see 1 Ki 17:17, 22)—will be apostles, who are no longer seeking miracles. Here then is the portrait of Jesus: he brings life to those who approach him with faith.
