有一个人,属于法利赛人,名叫尼克迪莫,是犹太人的一位首领。 他夜里来到耶稣那里,说:“拉比,我们知道你是从神那里来的老师,因为你所行的这些神迹,如果没有神的同在,没有人能做得到。”

耶稣回答说:“我确确实实地告诉你:一个人如果不重生[a],就不能见神的国。”

尼克迪莫问:“人老了,怎么能出生呢?他难道能再进母腹又出生吗?”

耶稣回答:“我确确实实地告诉你:一个人如果不是由水和圣灵所生的,就不能进入神的国。 由肉体所生的,就是肉体;由圣灵所生的,就是灵。 我说‘你们必须重生[b]’,你不要感到惊奇。 [c]随意而吹,你听见风声,却不知道它从哪里来,往哪里去。所有由圣灵所生的,也是这样。”

尼克迪莫又问:“怎么能有这些事呢?”

10 耶稣回答说:“你是以色列的老师,还不明白这些事吗? 11 我确确实实地告诉你:我们讲论我们所知道的,我们见证我们所看到的,而你们却不接受我们的见证。 12 我告诉你们地上的事,你们尚且不信,如果我告诉你们天上的事,你们怎么会信呢? 13 除了从天上降下来的人子,[d]没有人升过天。 14 摩西在旷野怎样把铜蛇举起,人子也必须照样被举起来, 15 好使所有相信他的人[e],都得到永恒的生命。

16 “神爱世人,甚至赐下他的独生子,好让所有信他的人不至于灭亡,反得永恒的生命, 17 因为神差派他的[f]儿子来到世上,不是为了定世人的罪,而是为了世人藉着他得救。 18 信他的人,不被定罪;不信的人,已经被定罪了,因为他不信神独生子的名。

19 “所定的罪是这样的:光来到了世界,人们却因自己的行为邪恶,不喜爱光,反喜爱黑暗。 20 事实上,所有作恶的人,都憎恨光,不来到光那里,免得自己的行为被揭露出来; 21 但行真理的人,却来到光那里,为了显明自己所做的是在神里面被做成的。”

耶稣与施洗约翰

22 这些事以后,耶稣和他的门徒们来到犹太地区,住在那里,并且给人施洗。 23 约翰也在撒令附近的艾嫩施洗,因为那里水多。众人纷纷而来受洗。 24 原来,约翰那时候还没有被投进监狱。

25 约翰的门徒们与一个[g]犹太人,为了洁净礼起了辩论。 26 他们就到约翰那里,对他说:“拉比,你看,以前与你在约旦河对岸的,就是你所见证的那一位,他也在施洗,而且大家都到他那里去了。”

27 约翰回答说:“如果不是从天上赐下的,人就不能得到什么。 28 你们自己可以为我见证:我曾经说过‘我不是基督,而是奉差派在他前面的。’ 29 迎娶新娘的是新郎。新郎的朋友站在那里,听到新郎的声音,就欢喜快乐。这样,我这喜乐得以满足了。 30 他必兴旺,我必衰微。”

来自天上的那一位

31 那从上面来的,是在万有之上;那从地而出的,属于地,而且所说的也属于地。那从天上来的,是在万有之上, 32 他见证他所看到的、他所听到的,可是没有人接受他的见证。 33 那接受他见证的人,就印证了神是真实的。 34 神所差派的那一位,就说神的话语,因为神不靠着量度赐下圣灵。 35 父爱子,把一切都交在他手里了。 36 信从子的人,就有永恒的生命;但是不肯信从子的人,见不到生命,而且神的震怒也停留在他身上。

Jesús y Nicodemo

1-2 Una noche, un fariseo llamado Nicodemo, que era líder de los judíos, fue a visitar a Jesús y le dijo:

—Maestro, sabemos que Dios te ha enviado a enseñarnos, pues nadie podría hacer los milagros que tú haces si Dios no estuviera con él.

Jesús le dijo:

—Te aseguro que si una persona no nace de nuevo[a] no podrá ver el reino de Dios.

Nicodemo le preguntó:

—¿Cómo puede volver a nacer alguien que ya es viejo? ¿Acaso puede entrar otra vez en el vientre de su madre?

Jesús le respondió:

—Te aseguro que si uno no nace del agua y del Espíritu, no puede entrar en el reino de Dios. Todos nacen de padres humanos; pero los hijos de Dios sólo nacen del Espíritu. No te sorprendas si te digo que hay que nacer de nuevo. El viento sopla por donde quiere, y aunque oyes su sonido, no sabes de dónde viene ni a dónde va. Así también sucede con todos los que nacen del Espíritu.

Nicodemo volvió a preguntarle:

—¿Cómo puede suceder esto?

10 Jesús le contestó:

—Tú eres un maestro famoso en Israel, y ¿no lo sabes? 11 Te aseguro que nosotros sabemos lo que decimos, porque lo hemos visto; pero ustedes no creen lo que les decimos. 12 Si no me creen cuando les hablo de las cosas de este mundo, ¿cómo me creerán si les hablo de las cosas del cielo? 13 Nadie ha subido al cielo, sino solamente el que bajó de allí, es decir, yo, el Hijo del hombre.

14 »Moisés levantó la serpiente de bronce en el desierto, y del mismo modo yo, el Hijo del hombre, tengo que ser levantado en alto, 15 para que todo el que crea en mí tenga vida eterna.

16 »Dios amó tanto a la gente de este mundo, que me entregó a mí, que soy su único Hijo, para que todo el que crea en mí no muera, sino que tenga vida eterna. 17 Porque Dios no me envió a este mundo para condenar a la gente, sino para salvarla.

18 »El que cree en mí, que soy el Hijo de Dios, no será condenado por Dios. Pero el que no cree ya ha sido condenado, precisamente por no haber creído en el Hijo único de Dios. 19 Y así es como Dios juzga: yo he venido al mundo, y soy la luz que brilla en la oscuridad, pero como la gente hacía lo malo prefirió más la oscuridad que la luz. 20 Todos los que hacen lo malo odian la luz, y no se acercan a ella, para que no se descubra lo que están haciendo. 21 Pero los que prefieren la verdad sí se acercan a la luz, pues quieren que los demás sepan que obedecen todos los mandamientos de Dios.

Juan el Bautista y Jesús

22 Después de esto, Jesús fue con sus discípulos a la región de Judea, y estuvo allí algún tiempo con ellos bautizando a la gente. 23-24 En ese tiempo Juan el Bautista todavía no había sido encarcelado, y también estaba bautizando en el pueblo de Enón, cerca de un lugar llamado Salim. En Enón había mucha agua, y la gente buscaba a Juan para que él los bautizara.

25 Entonces algunos discípulos de Juan comenzaron a discutir con un judío acerca de una ceremonia de purificación.[b] 26 Entonces fueron a ver a Juan y le dijeron:

—Maestro, ¿recuerdas a aquel de quien nos hablaste, el que estaba contigo al otro lado del río Jordán? Pues bien, ahora él está bautizando y todos lo siguen.

27 Juan les contestó:

—Nadie puede hacer algo si Dios no se lo permite. 28 Ustedes mismos me escucharon decir claramente que yo no soy el Mesías, sino que fui enviado antes que él para prepararlo todo.

29 »En una boda, el que se casa es el novio, y el mejor amigo del novio se llena de alegría con sólo escuchar su voz. Así de alegre estoy ahora, porque el Mesías está aquí. 30 Él debe tener cada vez más importancia, y yo tenerla menos.

31 »El Hijo de Dios viene del cielo, y es más importante que todos los que vivimos aquí en la tierra y hablamos de las cosas que aquí suceden. El que viene del cielo es más importante, 32 y habla de lo que ha visto y oído en el cielo. Sin embargo, muchos no quieren creer en lo que él dice. 33 Pero si alguien le cree, reconoce que Dios dice la verdad, 34 ya que cuando el Hijo habla, el que habla es Dios mismo, porque Dios le ha dado todo el poder de su Espíritu.

35 »Dios, el Padre, ama al Hijo, y le ha dado poder sobre todo el universo. 36 El que cree en el Hijo tiene la vida eterna, pero el que no obedece al Hijo no tiene la vida eterna, sino que ha sido condenado por Dios.

Nicodemus Comes to Jesus

There was a man named Nicodemus who was one of the Pharisees [C a religious party which strictly observed OT laws and later customs] and ·an important Jewish leader [L a ruler of the Jews; C probably a member of the Sanhedrin, the highest Jewish court of the time]. ·One night [or By night; C perhaps with connotations that he could not “see” spiritually] Nicodemus came to Jesus and said, “·Teacher [L Rabbi], we know you are a teacher sent from God, because no one can do the ·miracles [L signs; 2:11] you do unless God is with him.”

Jesus answered, “·I tell you the truth [L Truly, truly I say to you], unless you are born ·again [or from above; C this may be a play on words, meaning both “again” and “from above”], you cannot ·be in [experience; L see] God’s kingdom.”

Nicodemus said to him, “But if a person is already old, how can he be born ·again [or from above; 3:3]? ·He cannot enter his mother’s womb again. So how can a person be born a second time [L Can he enter his mother’s womb a second time and be born]?”

But Jesus answered, “·I tell you the truth [L Truly, truly I say to you], unless you are born from water and the Spirit [C equivalent to being born again (3:3); water could symbolize physical birth, but more likely symbolizes spiritual cleansing which brings renewal; Ezek. 36:25–27], you cannot enter God’s kingdom. ·Human life comes from human parents [L That which is born of the flesh is flesh; C flesh here means human nature], but ·spiritual life comes from the Spirit [L that which is born of the Spirit is spirit]. Don’t be ·surprised [amazed; astonished] when I tell you, ‘You [C plural, referring to the Jews or the Jewish leaders] must be born ·again [or from above; 3:3].’ The wind [C one word means both “wind” and “spirit” in Greek] blows where it wants to and you hear the sound of it, but you don’t know where the wind comes from or where it is going. It is the same with every person who is born from the Spirit.” [C We cannot comprehend or control the Spirit, but we experience his effect.]

Nicodemus ·asked [replied], “How can this ·happen [be]?”

10 Jesus ·said [replied; answered], “You are ·an important teacher in Israel [L the teacher of Israel], and you don’t ·understand [know] these things? 11 ·I tell you the truth [L Truly, truly I say to you], we talk about what we know, and we ·tell [testify; bear witness] about what we have seen, but you don’t ·accept what we tell you [L receive our testimony/witness]. 12 I have told you about things here on earth [C the teaching about being born again], and you do not believe me. ·So you will not [L So how will you…?] believe me if I tell you about things of heaven. 13 ·The only one who has ever gone up to heaven is [L No one has gone up into heaven except] the One who came down from heaven—the Son of Man[a] [C a title for the Messiah; Dan. 7:13–14].

14 “Just as Moses lifted up the ·snake [T serpent] in the ·desert [wilderness; C Moses put a bronze snake statue on a pole, and those who looked at it were healed of snake bites; Num. 21:4–9], the Son of Man must also be lifted up [C an allusion to the cross and resurrection]. 15 So that everyone who ·believes can have eternal life in him [or believes in him can have eternal life].

16 [L For] God loved the world so much that he gave his ·one and only [only; unique; T only begotten; 1:14, 18] Son so that whoever believes in him may not ·be lost [T perish], but have eternal life. 17 [L For; Indeed] God did not send his Son into the world to ·judge the world guilty [condemn the world], but to save the world through him. 18 People who believe in God’s Son are not ·judged guilty [condemned]. Jesus and John the Baptist

22 After this, Jesus and his ·followers [disciples] went into the ·area [countryside] of Judea, where he ·stayed [spent time] with his ·followers [disciples] and baptized people. 23 John was also baptizing in Aenon [C a town (meaning “springs”) of uncertain location on the Jordan River (but see note on Salim)], near Salim [C a town (meaning “peace”) probably located either near Shechem or just south of Bethshan, both of which are in a Samaritan area], because there was plenty of water there. People were going there to be baptized. 24 (This was before John was put into prison [Matt. 4:12].)

25 Some of John’s ·followers [disciples] had an ·argument [discussion; debate] with a Jew about ·religious washing [ceremonial cleansing; L purification; C the Jewish people washed themselves for ritual purposes before eating, before worshiping in the Temple, and at other special times]. 26 So they came to John and said, “Teacher [L Rabbi], remember the man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan River, the one ·you spoke about so much [L about whom you have testified/witnessed]? He is baptizing, and everyone is going to him.”

27 John answered, “A ·man [person] can get only what ·God gives him [L is given to him from heaven]. 28 You yourselves heard me ·say [testify], ‘I am not the ·Christ [Messiah], but I am the one sent ·to prepare the way for him [L before him; 1:20–28; compare Is. 40:3].’ 29 The bride belongs only to the bridegroom. But the ·friend who helps the bridegroom [or the best man] stands by and listens to him. He ·is thrilled [rejoices greatly] that he gets to hear the bridegroom’s voice. In the same way, ·I am really happy [L my joy is fulfilled; C in this analogy, John is the best man and Jesus is the bridegroom]. 30 He must ·become greater [increase], and I must ·become less important [decrease].

The One Who Comes from Heaven

31 “The One [C Jesus] who comes from above is ·greater than [L above] all. The one who is from the earth belongs to the earth and talks about ·things on the earth [earthly matters]. But the One who comes from heaven is ·greater than [L above] all. 32 He ·tells [testifies to; bears witness to] what he has seen and heard, but no one ·accepts [receives] ·what he says [his testimony; 3:11]. 33 Whoever ·accepts what he says [receives his testimony] has ·proven [certified; affirmed; L set his seal] that God is true. 34 [L For] The One whom God sent speaks the words of God, because God gives him the Spirit ·fully [L without measure/limit]. 35 The Father loves the Son and has given ·him power over everything [him authority over all; L all things into his hand]. 36 Those who believe in the Son have eternal life, but those who ·do not obey [reject] the Son will ·never have [L not see] life. God’s ·anger [wrath] ·stays [remains] on them.”

Chapter 3

Nicodemus Goes To Visit Jesus. There was a man from the Pharisees named Nicodemus,[a] a member of the Jewish ruling council, who came to Jesus at night. “Rabbi,” he said, “we know that you are a teacher who has come from God, for no one would be able to perform the signs that you do unless God were with him.” Jesus replied,

“Amen, amen, I say to you,
no one can see the kingdom of God[b]
without being born from above.”

Nicodemus asked, “How can a man be born again once he is old? Is it possible for him to enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” Jesus said,

“Amen, amen, I say to you,
no one can enter the kingdom of God
unless he is born of water and the Spirit.[c]
What is born of the flesh is flesh,
and what is born of the Spirit is spirit.
“You should not be astonished when I say,
‘You must be born from above.’
The wind blows where it chooses,
and you hear the sound of it,
but you do not know where it comes from
or where it goes.
So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

“How is this possible?” asked Nicodemus. 10 Jesus responded, “You are a teacher of Israel and you do not know these things?

11 “Amen, amen, I say to you,
we speak of what we know
and we testify to what we have seen,
and yet you do not accept our testimony.
12 If I tell you about earthly things
and you do not believe,
how will you believe
when I speak to you about heavenly things?

Jesus Christ, Savior and Judge[d]

13 “No one has gone up to heaven
except the one who descended from heaven,
the Son of Man.
14 And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert,
so must the Son of Man be lifted up,[e]
15 in order that everyone who believes in him
may have eternal life.
16 “For God so loved the world
that he gave his only Son,
so that everyone who believes in him
may not perish
but may attain eternal life.
17 “For God did not send his Son into the world
to condemn the world
but in order that the world might be saved through him.
18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned,
but whoever does not believe in him
already stands condemned,
because he has not believed in the name
of the only-begotten Son of God.
19 “And the judgment is this:
the light has come into the world,
but people preferred darkness to light
because their deeds were evil.
20 Everyone who does evil hates the light
and avoids coming near the light
so that his misdeeds may not be exposed.
21 However, whoever lives by the truth
comes to the light
so that it may be clearly seen
that his deeds have been done
in God.”

22 Final Witness of John the Baptist.[f] After this, Jesus went with his disciples into the Judean countryside, where he spent some time with them and baptized. 23 John was also baptizing at Aenon[g] near Salem, because there was an abundance of water there, and people were coming to be baptized. 24 At that time, John had not yet been imprisoned.

25 Now a dispute about ceremonial washings arose between a certain Jew and the disciples of John. 26 Therefore, they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, the one who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you bore witness, is baptizing, and everyone is flocking to him.” 27 John replied,

“No one can receive anything
except what has been given to him from heaven.
28 You yourselves can testify that I said,
‘I am not the Christ.
I have been sent before him.’
29 “It is the bridegroom who has the bride,
but the friend of the bridegroom
who stands by and listens for him
rejoices greatly when he hears the bridegroom’s voice.
This joy of mine
is complete.
30 He must increase;
I must decrease.

He Who Comes from Above[h]

31 “The one who comes from above is above all.
The one who is of the earth is earthly
and speaks of earthly things.
The one who comes from heaven is above all.
32 He bears witness to the things he has seen and heard,
yet no one accepts his testimony.
33 “Whoever accepts his testimony
attests that God speaks the truth.
34 For the one whom God has sent
speaks the words of God,
for God gives him the Spirit without measure.[i]
35 The Father loves the Son,
and he has entrusted everything into his hand.
36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life;
whoever does not believe in the Son will not see life,
but the wrath of God rests upon him.”

  2. John 3:3 Kingdom of God: this is the basic theme of the preaching of Jesus in the Synoptic Gospels. In John, it appears explicitly only in this verse. However, in the Synoptics it almost disappears in the Passion Narrative, whereas in John it is given particular emphasis there. John identifies the kingdom of God with the very person of Jesus. During the public ministry, the splendor of Jesus’ kingship was somewhat veiled by his fragile humanity, but in the Passion it comes shining through in his exaltation on the cross, which, for John, is intrinsically connected with Jesus’ glorification in heaven. From above: the Greek word anothen could be translated “from above” or “again.” Jesus means “from above,” but Nicodemus understands “again.”
  3. John 3:5 Born of water and the Spirit: this phrase refers to Christian Baptism, the necessary vehicle for our spiritual rebirth, wrought by the Holy Spirit. It may be that here the evangelist is clarifying the words of the Lord according to a later and more mature understanding of Christian teaching, as lived in the primitive community.
  4. John 3:13 The evangelist prolongs the conversation with Nicodemus in meditation on Jesus. What, then, is the mystery of Jesus and what does he bring to the human condition? The evangelist meditates on the Son of God, the divine messenger now glorified at his Father’s side.
    From Jesus, life came through the cross—as is suggested by the allusion to the bronze serpent intended to cure dying Hebrews (see Num 21:9). The cross was a testimony of God’s love for the world and for each one of us. The cross was also the light given to us. This light enables us to recognize our conduct in truth and compels us to make a decisive choice: either to submit to Jesus and be saved, or to flee and be condemned.
  5. John 3:14 So must the Son of Man be lifted up: the reference is to the lifting up on the cross, which in John’s view is identical with the glorification of Jesus.
  6. John 3:22 Using an image familiar to the Jews (see Deut 31:16; Jer 2:2; Hos 2:18f; Mt 9:15), John attests that Jesus is the true Bridegroom, that is, the one in whose person God enters into the new and definitive covenant with his own.
    The witness, moreover, sets himself aside: he is only the friend of the Bridegroom, whose role is to ask for the hand of the bride and, when the wedding feast is prepared, to introduce her to the Bridegroom.

  8. John 3:31 The evangelist continues his reflection on the mystery of Christ. Jesus is the Son who receives from his Father the fullness of life. He has the mission to reveal it and communicate it to those who believe in him, by giving them the Spirit with whom he himself is filled (v. 34). In rich and symbolic words, he is to show how much the believer’s life is a gift of God and a newness of existence beyond anything that is in the earthly power of people.

Jesus Teaches Nicodemus

Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus(A) who was a member of the Jewish ruling council.(B) He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi,(C) we know(D) that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs(E) you are doing if God were not with him.”(F)

Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.[a](G)

“How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!”

Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.(H) Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit[b] gives birth to spirit.(I) You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You[c] must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”[d](J)

“How can this be?”(K) Nicodemus asked.

10 “You are Israel’s teacher,”(L) said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? 11 Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know,(M) and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony.(N) 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? 13 No one has ever gone into heaven(O) except the one who came from heaven(P)—the Son of Man.[e](Q) 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness,(R) so the Son of Man must be lifted up,[f](S) 15 that everyone who believes(T) may have eternal life in him.”[g](U)

John Testifies Again About Jesus

22 After this, Jesus and his disciples went out into the Judean countryside, where he spent some time with them, and baptized.(AH) 23 Now John(AI) also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because there was plenty of water, and people were coming and being baptized. 24 (This was before John was put in prison.)(AJ) 25 An argument developed between some of John’s disciples and a certain Jew over the matter of ceremonial washing.(AK) 26 They came to John and said to him, “Rabbi,(AL) that man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan—the one you testified(AM) about—look, he is baptizing, and everyone is going to him.”

27 To this John replied, “A person can receive only what is given them from heaven. 28 You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Messiah but am sent ahead of him.’(AN) 29 The bride belongs to the bridegroom.(AO) The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete.(AP) 30 He must become greater; I must become less.”[h]

31 The one who comes from above(AQ) is above all; the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks as one from the earth.(AR) The one who comes from heaven is above all. 32 He testifies to what he has seen and heard,(AS) but no one accepts his testimony.(AT) 33 Whoever has accepted it has certified that God is truthful. 34 For the one whom God has sent(AU) speaks the words of God, for God[i] gives the Spirit(AV) without limit. 35 The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands.(AW) 36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life,(AX) but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.
