神成為人
1 太初有道，
道與神同在，
道就是神。
2 這道太初與神同在。
3 萬有是藉著他而成的；
凡所成的，
沒有一樣不是藉著他而成的。
4 生命在他裡面，
這生命就是人的光。
5 這光在黑暗中照耀，
黑暗卻沒有勝過[a]這光。
6 有一個人受神的差派而來，
他名叫約翰。
7 他為見證而來，
是要為這光做見證，
好讓人都藉著他相信。
8 他不是這光，
而是要為這光做見證。
9 這光是真光，
來到這世界照亮每個人。
10 他在這世界，
世界也是藉著他而成的，
世界卻不認識他。
11 他來到自己的地方，
自己的人卻不接受他。
12 但是所有接受他的，
就是信他名的人，
他就賜給他們權柄成為神的兒女。
13 他們不是由血緣、
或肉體的意願、
或人的意志所生的，
而是由神所生的。
14 道成了肉身，
居住在我們中間。
我們看到了他的榮耀，
正是從父而來的獨生子的榮耀，
充滿了恩典和真理。
15 約翰為他做見證，呼喊說：
「這一位就是我曾說過的，
『那在我之後來的，已成為在我前面的，
因為他在我之前就已經存在。』」
16 原來從他的豐盛完美中，
我們都領受了恩典，而且恩上加恩。
17 因為律法是藉著摩西賜下的，

18 從來沒有人看見神，

施洗約翰的見證
19 以下是約翰的見證。那時候，耶路撒冷的那些猶太人派了一些祭司和利未人到約翰那裡去問他：「你是誰？」
20 他就承認，並毫不否認地告白：「我不是基督。」
21 他們又問：「那麼你是誰呢？是以利亞嗎？」
他說：「我不是。」
「是那位先知[b]嗎？」
他回答：「不是。」
22 於是他們問：「你到底是誰？好讓我們給那些派我們來的人一個答覆。你自己說，你是什麼人？」
23 約翰說：「正如先知以賽亞所說的，我就是在曠野裡呼喊的聲音：『你們當修直[c]主的道[d]。』[e]」
24 那些被派來的人屬於法利賽人， 25 他們又問約翰：「你既不是基督，又不是以利亞，也不是那位先知，那麼，你為什麼施洗呢？」
26 約翰回答說：「我用水[f]施洗，但有一位站在你們中間，是你們不認識的， 27 他是那在我之後來的，[g]我就是為他解鞋帶也不配。」
28 這些事發生在約旦河對岸的伯大尼[h]，就是約翰施洗的地方。
神的羔羊
29 第二天，約翰看見耶穌向他走來，就說：「看哪，神的羔羊，除去世人罪孽的！ 30 這一位就是我所說的『那在我之後來的人，已成為在我前面的，因為在我之前他就存在了。』 31 我以前也不認識他，但為了讓他向以色列顯明，所以我來用水施洗。」
32 約翰又見證說：「我看到聖靈好像鴿子從天上降臨，停留在他身上。 33 我以前也不認識他，可是那派我用水施洗的對我說：『如果你看見聖靈降臨在誰身上，又停留在誰身上，誰就是用聖靈施洗的那一位。』 34 我看到了，就見證：這一位就是神的兒子[i]。」
35 過了一天，約翰和他的兩個門徒又站在那裡。 36 約翰看著耶穌走過，就說：「看哪，神的羔羊！」
37 那兩個門徒聽他說話，就跟從了耶穌。 38 耶穌轉過身來，看到他們跟著走，就問：「你們尋找什麼呢？」
他們對耶穌說：「拉比，你住在哪裡呢？」——「拉比」翻譯出來意思是「老師」。
39 耶穌說：「你們來看吧！」他們去了，看見耶穌住的地方，那天就住在他那裡。那時大約是下午四點[j]。
40 聽見了約翰的話而跟從耶穌的兩個人中，有一個是西門彼得的弟弟安得烈。 41 安得烈先去找自己的哥哥[k]西門，對他說：「我們找到了彌賽亞。」——「彌賽亞」翻譯出來就是「基督」。 42 他就帶西門到耶穌那裡。

腓力與拿旦業
43 又過了一天，耶穌決定前往加利利地區。他找到腓力，對他說：「你跟從我！」
44 腓力來自伯賽達，與安得烈和彼得同鄉。 45 腓力找到拿旦業[n]，對他說：「我們發現了摩西在律法上所寫的，和先知們所記的那一位。他就是約瑟的兒子，拿撒勒人耶穌。」
46 拿旦業對他說：「拿撒勒還能出什麼好的嗎？」
腓力說：「你來看吧！」
47 耶穌看見拿旦業向他走來，就指著他說：「看，一個真正的以色列人！他裡面沒有詭詐。」
48 拿旦業對耶穌說：「你怎麼知道我呢？」
耶穌回答說：「腓力叫你以前，你還在無花果樹下，我就看見你了。」
49 拿旦業說：「拉比，你是神的兒子，你是以色列的王！」
50 耶穌對他說：「因為我說『我看見你在無花果樹下』，你就信嗎？你將會看到比這更大的事。」 51 耶穌又對他說：「我確確實實地告訴你們：你們將會看見天敞開了，神的天使們在人子上頭，上去下來。」

耶稣最早的门徒
35 第二天，约翰和他的两个门徒又在那个地方。 36 当他们看见耶稣走过时，约翰说∶“看，上帝的羔羊。”
37 两个门徒听到了他的话，便跟着耶稣走了。 38 耶稣转过身，看到他们跟着他，就问∶“你们要什么？”
他们对他说∶“拉比（老师），您住在哪里？”
39 耶稣对他们说∶“你们来看吧。”于是，两个人就去看他住的地方，并和他共度了那天，当时大约四点左右。
40 听了约翰的话后跟耶稣走了的两个人当中，其中一个是西门彼得的兄弟安得烈。 41 他立刻找到他的兄弟西门，告诉他∶“我们找到弥赛亚了。”
42 他带着西门去见耶稣，耶稣看着他说∶“你是约翰的儿子西门，你以后要叫彼得 [g]。”

Christ Comes to the World
1 Before the world began, the Word[a] was there. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was there with God in the beginning. 3 Everything was made through him, and nothing was made without him. 4 In him there was life, and that life was a light for the people of the world. 5 The light[b] shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not defeated[c] it.
6 There was a man named John, who was sent by God. 7 He came to tell people about the light. Through him all people could hear about the light and believe. 8 John was not the light. But he came to tell people about the light. 9 The true light was coming into the world. This is the true light that gives light to all people.
10 The Word was already in the world. The world was made through him, but the world did not know him. 11 He came to the world that was his own. And his own people did not accept him. 12 But some people did accept him. They believed in him, and he gave them the right to become children of God. 13 They became God’s children, but not in the way babies are usually born. It was not because of any human desire or plan. They were born from God himself.
14 The Word became a man and lived among us. We saw his divine greatness—the greatness that belongs to the only Son of the Father. The Word was full of grace and truth. 15 John told people about him. He said loudly, “This is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘The one who is coming after me is greater than I am, because he was living before I was even born.’”
16 Yes, the Word was full of grace and truth, and from him we all received one blessing after another.[d] 17 That is, the law was given to us through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God. The only Son is the one who has shown us what God is like. He is himself God and is very close to the Father.[e]
John Tells About the Messiah(A)
19 The Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent some priests and Levites to John to ask him, “Who are you?” He told them the truth. 20 Without any hesitation he said openly and plainly, “I am not the Messiah.”
21 They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?”
He answered, “No, I am not Elijah.”
They asked, “Are you the Prophet[f]?”
He answered, “No, I am not the Prophet.”
22 Then they said, “Who are you? Tell us about yourself. Give us an answer to tell the people who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”
23 John told them the words of the prophet Isaiah:
“I am the voice of someone shouting in the desert:
‘Make a straight road ready for the Lord.’” (B)
24 These Jews were sent from the Pharisees. 25 They said to John, “You say you are not the Messiah. You say you are not Elijah or the Prophet. Then why do you baptize people?”
26 John answered, “I baptize people with water. But there is someone here with you that you don’t know. 27 He is the one who is coming later. I am not good enough to be the slave who unties the strings on his sandals.”
28 These things all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan River. This is where John was baptizing people.
Jesus, the Lamb of God
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God. He takes away the sins of the world! 30 This is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘There is a man coming after me who is greater than I am, because he was living even before I was born.’ 31 I did not know who he was. But I came baptizing people with water so that Israel could know that he is the Messiah.[g]”
32-34 Then John said this for everyone to hear: “I also did not know who the Messiah was. But the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘You will see the Spirit come down and rest on a man. He is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ I have seen this happen. I saw the Spirit come down from heaven like a dove and rest on this man. So this is what I tell people: ‘He is the Son of God.’[h]”
The First Followers of Jesus
35 The next day John was there again and had two of his followers with him. 36 He saw Jesus walking by and said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”
37 The two followers heard him say this, so they followed Jesus. 38 Jesus turned and saw the two men following him. He asked, “What do you want?”
They said, “Rabbi, where are you staying?” (“Rabbi” means “Teacher.”)
39 He answered, “Come with me and you will see.” So the two men went with him. They saw the place where he was staying, and they stayed there with him that day. It was about four o’clock.
40 These men followed Jesus after they had heard about him from John. One of them was Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter. 41 The first thing Andrew did was to go and find his brother Simon. Andrew said to him, “We have found the Messiah.” (“Messiah” means “Christ.”)
42 Then Andrew brought Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon, the son of John. You will be called Cephas.” (“Cephas” means “Peter.[i]”)
43 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He met Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” 44 Philip was from the town of Bethsaida, the same as Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the man that Moses wrote about in the law. The prophets wrote about him too. He is Jesus, the son of Joseph. He is from Nazareth.”
46 But Nathanael said to Philip, “Nazareth! Can anything good come from Nazareth?”
Philip answered, “Come and see.”
47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said, “This man coming is a true Israelite, one you can trust.[j]”
48 Nathanael asked, “How do you know me?”
Jesus answered, “I saw you when you were under the fig tree, before Philip told you about me.”
49 Then Nathanael said, “Teacher, you are the Son of God. You are the King of Israel.”
50 Jesus said to him, “Do you believe this just because I said I saw you under the fig tree? You will see much greater things than that!” 51 Then he said, “Believe me when I say that you will all see heaven open. You will see ‘angels of God going up and coming down’[k] on the Son of Man.”

- John 1:1 Word The Greek word is “ logos,” meaning any kind of communication. It could be translated “message.” Here, it describes Jesus Christ before he was sent to earth as a human being, which is the way God chose to tell the world about himself. Also in verses 10, 14, 16.
- John 1:5 light Meaning Christ, the Word, who brought to the world understanding about God. Also in verse 7.
- John 1:5 defeated Or “understood.”
- John 1:16 one blessing after another Literally, “grace in place of grace.”

The Word Became Flesh
1 In the beginning was the Word,(A) and the Word was with God,(B) and the Word was God.(C) 2 He was with God in the beginning.(D) 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.(E) 4 In him was life,(F) and that life was the light(G) of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness,(H) and the darkness has not overcome[a] it.(I)
6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John.(J) 7 He came as a witness to testify(K) concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.(L) 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.

John the Baptist Denies Being the Messiah
19 Now this was John’s(AG) testimony when the Jewish leaders[c](AH) in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.”(AI)
21 They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?”(AJ)
He said, “I am not.”
“Are you the Prophet?”(AK)
He answered, “No.”
22 Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”
23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness,(AL) ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’”[d](AM)
24 Now the Pharisees who had been sent 25 questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”
26 “I baptize with[e] water,”(AN) John replied, “but among you stands one you do not know. 27 He is the one who comes after me,(AO) the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.”(AP)
28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan,(AQ) where John was baptizing.
John Testifies About Jesus
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God,(AR) who takes away the sin of the world!(AS) 30 This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’(AT) 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.”
32 Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.(AU) 33 And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water(AV) told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’(AW) 34 I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”[f](AX)
John’s Disciples Follow Jesus(AY)
35 The next day John(AZ) was there again with two of his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”(BA)
37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. 38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?”
They said, “Rabbi”(BB) (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”
39 “Come,” he replied, “and you will see.”
So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.
40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ).(BC) 42 And he brought him to Jesus.
Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called(BD) Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter[g]).(BE)
Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael
43 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip,(BF) he said to him, “Follow me.”(BG)
44 Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida.(BH) 45 Philip found Nathanael(BI) and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law,(BJ) and about whom the prophets also wrote(BK)—Jesus of Nazareth,(BL) the son of Joseph.”(BM)
46 “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?”(BN) Nathanael asked.
“Come and see,” said Philip.
47 When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite(BO) in whom there is no deceit.”(BP)
48 “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked.
Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.”
49 Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi,(BQ) you are the Son of God;(BR) you are the king of Israel.”(BS)
50 Jesus said, “You believe[h] because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.” 51 He then added, “Very truly I tell you,[i] you[j] will see ‘heaven open,(BT) and the angels of God ascending and descending(BU) on’[k] the Son of Man.”(BV)

道成了肉身
1 太初有道，道與 神同在，道就是 神。 2 這道太初與 神同在。 3 萬物都是藉着他造的，沒有一樣不是藉着他造的。凡被造的， 4 在他裏面有生命[a]，這生命就是人的光。 5 光照在黑暗裏，黑暗卻沒有勝過光[b]。
6 有一個人，是從 神那裏差來的，名叫約翰。 7 這人來是為了作見證，是為那光作見證，要使眾人藉着他而信。 8 他不是那光，而是要為那光作見證。 9 那光是真光，來到世上，照亮所有的人[c]。 10 他在世界，世界是藉着他造的，世界卻不認識他。 11 他來到自己的地方，自己的人並不接納他。 12 凡接納他的，就是信他名的人，他就賜他們權柄作 神的兒女。 13 這些人不是從血生的，不是從情慾生的，也不是從人的意願生的，而是從 神生的。
14 道成了肉身，住在我們中間，充充滿滿地有恩典有真理，我們也見過他的榮光，正是父獨一兒子[d]的榮光。 15 約翰為他作見證，喊着說：「這就是我曾說：『那在我以後來的先於我，因為在我以前，他已經存在。』」 16 從他的豐富裏，我們都領受了恩典，而且恩上加恩。 17 律法是藉着摩西頒佈的；恩典和真理卻是由耶穌基督來的。 18 從來沒有人見過 神，只有在父懷裏獨一的兒子將他表明出來。
施洗約翰的見證(A)
19 這是約翰的見證：猶太人從耶路撒冷差祭司和利未人到約翰那裏去問他：「你是誰？」 20 他就承認，並不隱瞞，承認說：「我不是基督。」 21 他們又問他：「那麼，你是誰？是以利亞嗎？」他說：「我不是。」「是那位先知嗎？」他回答：「不是。」 22 於是他們對他說：「你到底是誰，好讓我們回覆差我們來的人。你說，你自己是誰？」 23 他說：
「我就是那在曠野呼喊的聲音：
修直主的道。」
正如以賽亞先知所說的。
24 那些人是法利賽人差來的。 25 他們就問他：「你既不是基督，不是以利亞，也不是那位先知，那麼，你為甚麼施洗呢？」 26 約翰回答：「我是用水施洗，但有一位站在你們中間，是你們不認識的， 27 就是那在我以後來的，我給他解鞋帶也不配。」 28 這些事發生在約旦河東邊的伯大尼[e]，約翰施洗的地方。
神的羔羊
29 第二天，約翰看見耶穌來到他那裏，就說：「看哪， 神的羔羊，除去世人的罪的！ 30 這就是我曾說『那在我以後來的先於我，因為在我以前，他已經存在』的那一位。 31 我先前不認識他，如今我來用水施洗，為要使他顯明給以色列人。」 32 約翰又作見證說：「我曾看見聖靈彷彿鴿子從天降下，停留在他的身上。 33 我先前不認識他，可是那差我來用水施洗的對我說：『你看見聖靈降下來，停留在誰的身上，誰就是用聖靈施洗的。』 34 我看見了，所以作證：這一位是 神的兒子。」
初次選召門徒
35 又過了一天，約翰同兩個門徒站在那裏。 36 他見耶穌走過，就說：「看哪， 神的羔羊！」 37 兩個門徒聽見他的話，就跟從了耶穌。 38 耶穌轉過身來，看見他們跟着，就問他們說：「你們要甚麼？」他們對他說：「拉比，你在哪裏住？」（「拉比」翻出來就是老師。） 39 耶穌說：「你們來看。」他們就去看他在哪裏住。這一天他們就跟他同住；那時大約是下午四點鐘。 40 聽了約翰的話而跟從耶穌的那兩個人，其中一個是西門‧彼得的弟弟安得烈。 41 他先找到自己的哥哥西門，對他說：「我們遇見彌賽亞了。」（「彌賽亞」翻出來就是基督。） 42 於是安得烈領西門去見耶穌。耶穌看着他，說：「你是約翰[f]的兒子西門，你要稱為磯法。」（「磯法」翻出來就是彼得[g]。）
呼召腓力和拿但業
43 又過了一天，耶穌想要往加利利去。他找到腓力，就對他說：「來跟從我！」 44 這腓力是伯賽大人，是安得烈和彼得的同鄉。 45 腓力找到拿但業，對他說：「摩西在律法書上所寫的，和眾先知所記的那一位，我們遇見了，就是約瑟的兒子拿撒勒人耶穌。」 46 拿但業對他說：「拿撒勒還能出甚麼好的嗎？」腓力說：「你來看。」 47 耶穌看見拿但業向他走來，就論到他說：「看哪，這真是個以色列人！他心裏是沒有詭詐的。」 48 拿但業對耶穌說：「你從哪裏認識我的？」耶穌回答他說：「腓力還沒有呼喚你，你在無花果樹底下，我就看見你了。」 49 拿但業回答他：「拉比！你是 神的兒子，你是以色列的王。」 50 耶穌回答他說：「因為我說在無花果樹底下看見你，你就信嗎？你將看見比這些更大的事呢！」 51 他又說：「我實實在在地告訴你們，你們將要看見天開了， 神的使者在人子身上，上去下來。」
