Genesis 14-16
New International Version
Abram Rescues Lot
14 At the time when Amraphel was king of Shinar,[a](A) Arioch king of Ellasar, Kedorlaomer(B) king of Elam(C) and Tidal king of Goyim, 2 these kings went to war against Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboyim,(D) and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar).(E) 3 All these latter kings joined forces in the Valley of Siddim(F) (that is, the Dead Sea Valley(G)). 4 For twelve years they had been subject to Kedorlaomer,(H) but in the thirteenth year they rebelled.
5 In the fourteenth year, Kedorlaomer(I) and the kings allied with him went out and defeated the Rephaites(J) in Ashteroth Karnaim, the Zuzites in Ham, the Emites(K) in Shaveh Kiriathaim 6 and the Horites(L) in the hill country of Seir,(M) as far as El Paran(N) near the desert. 7 Then they turned back and went to En Mishpat (that is, Kadesh),(O) and they conquered the whole territory of the Amalekites,(P) as well as the Amorites(Q) who were living in Hazezon Tamar.(R)
8 Then the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah,(S) the king of Admah, the king of Zeboyim(T) and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar)(U) marched out and drew up their battle lines in the Valley of Siddim(V) 9 against Kedorlaomer(W) king of Elam,(X) Tidal king of Goyim, Amraphel king of Shinar and Arioch king of Ellasar—four kings against five. 10 Now the Valley of Siddim(Y) was full of tar(Z) pits, and when the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah(AA) fled, some of the men fell into them and the rest fled to the hills.(AB) 11 The four kings seized all the goods(AC) of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their food; then they went away. 12 They also carried off Abram’s nephew Lot(AD) and his possessions, since he was living in Sodom.
13 A man who had escaped came and reported this to Abram the Hebrew.(AE) Now Abram was living near the great trees of Mamre(AF) the Amorite, a brother[b] of Eshkol(AG) and Aner, all of whom were allied with Abram. 14 When Abram heard that his relative(AH) had been taken captive, he called out the 318 trained(AI) men born in his household(AJ) and went in pursuit as far as Dan.(AK) 15 During the night Abram divided his men(AL) to attack them and he routed them, pursuing them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus.(AM) 16 He recovered(AN) all the goods(AO) and brought back his relative Lot and his possessions, together with the women and the other people.
17 After Abram returned from defeating Kedorlaomer(AP) and the kings allied with him, the king of Sodom(AQ) came out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley).(AR)
18 Then Melchizedek(AS) king of Salem(AT) brought out bread(AU) and wine.(AV) He was priest of God Most High,(AW) 19 and he blessed Abram,(AX) saying,
“Blessed be Abram by God Most High,(AY)
Creator of heaven and earth.(AZ)
20 And praise be to God Most High,(BA)
who delivered your enemies into your hand.”
Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.(BB)
21 The king of Sodom(BC) said to Abram, “Give me the people and keep the goods(BD) for yourself.”
22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom,(BE) “With raised hand(BF) I have sworn an oath to the Lord, God Most High,(BG) Creator of heaven and earth,(BH) 23 that I will accept nothing belonging to you,(BI) not even a thread or the strap of a sandal, so that you will never be able to say, ‘I made Abram rich.’ 24 I will accept nothing but what my men have eaten and the share that belongs to the men who went with me—to Aner, Eshkol and Mamre.(BJ) Let them have their share.”
The Lord’s Covenant With Abram
15 After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram(BK) in a vision:(BL)
2 But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord,(BP) what can you give me since I remain childless(BQ) and the one who will inherit[e] my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?(BR)” 3 And Abram said, “You have given me no children; so a servant(BS) in my household(BT) will be my heir.”
4 Then the word of the Lord came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.(BU)” 5 He took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars(BV)—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring[f] be.”(BW)
6 Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.(BX)
7 He also said to him, “I am the Lord, who brought you out(BY) of Ur of the Chaldeans(BZ) to give you this land to take possession of it.”(CA)
8 But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord,(CB) how can I know(CC) that I will gain possession of it?”(CD)
9 So the Lord said to him, “Bring me a heifer,(CE) a goat and a ram, each three years old,(CF) along with a dove and a young pigeon.(CG)”
10 Abram brought all these to him, cut them in two and arranged the halves opposite each other;(CH) the birds, however, he did not cut in half.(CI) 11 Then birds of prey came down on the carcasses,(CJ) but Abram drove them away.
12 As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep,(CK) and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him. 13 Then the Lord said to him, “Know for certain that for four hundred years(CL) your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be enslaved(CM) and mistreated there. 14 But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out(CN) with great possessions.(CO) 15 You, however, will go to your ancestors(CP) in peace and be buried at a good old age.(CQ) 16 In the fourth generation(CR) your descendants will come back here,(CS) for the sin of the Amorites(CT) has not yet reached its full measure.”
17 When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch(CU) appeared and passed between the pieces.(CV) 18 On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram(CW) and said, “To your descendants I give this land,(CX) from the Wadi[g] of Egypt(CY) to the great river, the Euphrates(CZ)— 19 the land of the Kenites,(DA) Kenizzites, Kadmonites, 20 Hittites,(DB) Perizzites,(DC) Rephaites,(DD) 21 Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites and Jebusites.”(DE)
Hagar and Ishmael
16 Now Sarai,(DF) Abram’s wife, had borne him no children.(DG) But she had an Egyptian slave(DH) named Hagar;(DI) 2 so she said to Abram, “The Lord has kept me from having children.(DJ) Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.”(DK)
Abram agreed to what Sarai said. 3 So after Abram had been living in Canaan(DL) ten years,(DM) Sarai his wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife. 4 He slept with Hagar,(DN) and she conceived.
When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress.(DO) 5 Then Sarai said to Abram, “You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my slave in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the Lord judge between you and me.”(DP)
6 “Your slave is in your hands,(DQ)” Abram said. “Do with her whatever you think best.” Then Sarai mistreated(DR) Hagar; so she fled from her.
7 The angel of the Lord(DS) found Hagar near a spring(DT) in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur.(DU) 8 And he said, “Hagar,(DV) slave of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?”(DW)
“I’m running away from my mistress Sarai,” she answered.
9 Then the angel of the Lord told her, “Go back to your mistress and submit to her.” 10 The angel added, “I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count.”(DX)
11 The angel of the Lord(DY) also said to her:
“You are now pregnant
and you will give birth to a son.(DZ)
You shall name him(EA) Ishmael,[h](EB)
for the Lord has heard of your misery.(EC)
12 He will be a wild donkey(ED) of a man;
his hand will be against everyone
and everyone’s hand against him,
and he will live in hostility
toward[i] all his brothers.(EE)”
13 She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,(EF)” for she said, “I have now seen[j] the One who sees me.”(EG) 14 That is why the well(EH) was called Beer Lahai Roi[k];(EI) it is still there, between Kadesh(EJ) and Bered.
15 So Hagar(EK) bore Abram a son,(EL) and Abram gave the name Ishmael(EM) to the son she had borne. 16 Abram was eighty-six years old(EN) when Hagar bore him Ishmael.

Abram Rescues Lot
14 In the days of Amraphel king of (A)Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of (B)Elam, and Tidal king of Goiim, 2 these kings made war with (C)Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of (D)Admah, Shemeber king of (E)Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar). 3 And all these joined forces in the Valley of Siddim ((F)that is, the Salt Sea). 4 Twelve years they had served Chedorlaomer, but in the thirteenth year they rebelled. 5 In the fourteenth year Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him came and defeated the (G)Rephaim in (H)Ashteroth-karnaim, the (I)Zuzim in Ham, the (J)Emim in Shaveh-kiriathaim, 6 and the (K)Horites in their hill country of Seir as far as (L)El-paran on the border of the wilderness. 7 Then they turned back and came to En-mishpat (that is, (M)Kadesh) and defeated all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites who were dwelling (N)in Hazazon-tamar.
8 Then the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar) went out, and they joined battle in the Valley of Siddim 9 with Chedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of Goiim, Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar, four kings against five. 10 Now the Valley of Siddim was full of (O)bitumen pits, and as the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, some fell into them, and the rest fled (P)to the hill country. 11 So the enemy took (Q)all the possessions of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their provisions, and went their way. 12 They also took Lot, (R)the son of Abram's brother, (S)who was dwelling in Sodom, and his possessions, and went their way.
13 Then one who had escaped came and told Abram the Hebrew, (T)who was living by the (U)oaks[a] of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and of Aner. These were allies of Abram. 14 When Abram heard that his kinsman had been taken captive, he led forth his trained men, (V)born in his house, 318 of them, and went in pursuit as far as (W)Dan. 15 And he divided his forces against them by night, he and his servants, and defeated them and pursued them to Hobah, north of Damascus. 16 Then he brought back all the possessions, and also brought back his kinsman Lot (X)with his possessions, and the women and the people.
Abram Blessed by Melchizedek
17 After his return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the (Y)King's Valley). 18 And (Z)Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. (He was (AA)priest of (AB)God Most High.) 19 And he blessed him and said,
(AC)“Blessed be Abram by God Most High,
(AD)Possessor[b] of heaven and earth;
20 and blessed be God Most High,
who has delivered your enemies into your hand!”
And Abram gave him (AE)a tenth of everything. 21 And the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the persons, but take the goods for yourself.” 22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom, (AF)“I have lifted my hand[c] to the Lord, God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth, 23 that (AG)I would not take a thread or a sandal strap or anything that is yours, lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich.’ 24 I will take nothing but what the young men have eaten, and the share of the men who went with me. Let (AH)Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre take their share.”
God's Covenant with Abram
15 After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: (AI)“Fear not, Abram, I am (AJ)your shield; your reward shall be very great.” 2 But Abram said, “O Lord God, what will you give me, for I continue[d] childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” 3 And Abram said, “Behold, you have given me no offspring, and (AK)a member of my household will be my heir.” 4 And behold, the word of the Lord came to him: “This man shall not be your heir; (AL)your very own son[e] shall be your heir.” 5 And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and (AM)number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, (AN)“So shall your offspring be.” 6 And (AO)he believed the Lord, and (AP)he counted it to him as righteousness.
7 And he said to him, “I am the Lord who (AQ)brought you out from Ur of the Chaldeans (AR)to give you this land to possess.” 8 But he said, “O Lord God, (AS)how am I to know that I shall possess it?” 9 He said to him, “Bring me a heifer three years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.” 10 And he brought him all these, (AT)cut them in half, and laid each half over against the other. But (AU)he did not cut the birds in half. 11 And when birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away.
12 As the sun was going down, a (AV)deep sleep fell on Abram. And behold, dreadful and great darkness fell upon him. 13 Then the Lord said to Abram, “Know for certain (AW)that your offspring will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs and will be servants there, and (AX)they will be afflicted for (AY)four hundred years. 14 But (AZ)I will bring judgment on the nation that they serve, and afterward (BA)they shall come out with great possessions. 15 As for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace; (BB)you shall be buried in a good old age. 16 And they shall come back here in the fourth generation, for (BC)the iniquity of the Amorites (BD)is not yet complete.”
17 When the sun had gone down and it was dark, behold, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces. 18 On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, (BE)“To your offspring I give[f] this land, from (BF)the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates, 19 the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, 20 the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, 21 the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites and the Jebusites.”
Sarai and Hagar
16 (BG)Now Sarai, Abram's wife, had borne him no children. She had a female Egyptian servant whose name was (BH)Hagar. 2 And Sarai said to Abram, “Behold now, the Lord has prevented me from bearing children. Go in to my servant; it may be that I shall obtain children[g] by her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai. 3 So, after Abram (BI)had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, Sarai, Abram's wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her servant, and gave her to Abram her husband as a wife. 4 And he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, (BJ)she looked with contempt on her mistress.[h] 5 And Sarai said to Abram, “May the wrong done to me be on you! I gave my servant to your embrace, and when she saw that she had conceived, she looked on me with contempt. May (BK)the Lord judge between you and me!” 6 But Abram said to Sarai, “Behold, your servant is in your power; do to her as you please.” Then Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her.
7 The angel of the Lord found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, the spring on the way to (BL)Shur. 8 And he said, “Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going?” She said, “I am fleeing from my mistress Sarai.” 9 The angel of the Lord said to her, “Return to your mistress and submit to her.” 10 The angel of the Lord also said to her, (BM)“I will surely multiply your offspring so that they cannot be numbered for multitude.” 11 And the angel of the Lord said to her,
“Behold, you are pregnant
and shall bear a son.
You shall call his name Ishmael,[i]
(BN)because the Lord has listened to your affliction.
12 He shall be (BO)a wild donkey of a man,
his hand against everyone
and everyone's hand against him,
and he shall dwell (BP)over against all his kinsmen.”
13 So she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, “You are a God of seeing,”[j] for she said, (BQ)“Truly here I have seen him who looks after me.”[k] 14 Therefore the well was called (BR)Beer-lahai-roi;[l] it lies between (BS)Kadesh and Bered.
15 And Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael. 16 Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.
