上帝考验亚伯拉罕
22 这些事以后，上帝要考验亚伯拉罕，就呼唤他：“亚伯拉罕！”他回答说：“我在这里。” 2 上帝说：“带着你的儿子，你的独生子，你疼爱的以撒前往摩利亚，在我指示你的山上把他献为燔祭。” 3 亚伯拉罕清早起来，准备好驴，劈好献燔祭用的柴，带着两个仆人和儿子以撒动身前往上帝指示他的地方。 4 到了第三天，亚伯拉罕远远看见那地方， 5 就对仆人说：“你们和驴在这里等着，我和孩子到那边敬拜上帝，然后便回来。”
6 于是，亚伯拉罕把献燔祭用的柴放在儿子以撒肩上，自己手里拿着火种和刀。父子二人一同向前走。 7 以撒说：“父亲。”亚伯拉罕说：“孩子，什么事？”以撒说：“你看，火种和柴都有了，但献燔祭用的羊羔在哪里呢？” 8 亚伯拉罕说：“孩子，上帝自己会预备献燔祭的羊羔。”二人就继续向前走。
9 他们到了上帝指示的地方，亚伯拉罕就筑起祭坛，把柴摆在上面，然后把以撒捆起来放在柴上。 10 亚伯拉罕伸手拿起刀来，要杀他的儿子。 11 耶和华的天使从天上呼唤他说：“亚伯拉罕！亚伯拉罕！”他回答说：“我在这里。” 12 天使说：“不要动孩子，不可伤害他！现在我知道你敬畏上帝，因为你不惜献上你的儿子——你的独生子。” 13 这时亚伯拉罕抬起头来，突然看见有一只公绵羊两角卡在稠密的树丛中，于是把羊取来代替他的儿子献为燔祭。 14 亚伯拉罕称那地方为“耶和华以勒”[a]。直到今天人们还说：“在耶和华的山上必有预备。”
15 耶和华的天使再次从天上呼唤亚伯拉罕， 16 对他说：“耶和华说，‘你既然愿意把你的儿子，你的独生子献给我，我凭自己向你起誓， 17 我必赐福给你，使你的后裔多如天上的星和海边的沙。你的后裔必占领仇敌的城池， 18 天下万国必因你的后裔而蒙福，因为你听从了我的话。’” 19 于是，亚伯拉罕回到仆人等候的地方，他们一同返回亚伯拉罕居住的别示巴。
拿鹤的后代
20 后来，有人告诉亚伯拉罕：“密迦为你的兄弟拿鹤生了几个儿子， 21 长子乌斯、乌斯的弟弟布斯、亚兰的父亲基姆利、 22 基薛、哈琐、必达、益拉和利百加的父亲彼土利。” 23 密迦为亚伯拉罕的兄弟拿鹤生了八个儿子。 24 拿鹤的妾流玛生了提八、迦含、他辖和玛迦。
亚伯拉罕买地葬撒拉
23 撒拉享年一百二十七岁， 2 在迦南境内的基列·亚巴，即希伯仑去世。亚伯拉罕在那里痛哭，哀悼她。 3 他从妻子尸体旁边站起来对赫人说： 4 “我是寄居在你们这里的异乡人，请你们给我一块地，我好埋葬我的亡妻。” 5 赫人回答说： 6 “我主，请听我们说，你在我们中间是一位尊贵的王子，你可以选我们这里最好的坟地，没有人会反对你使用他的坟地埋葬你的妻子。” 7 亚伯拉罕就向他们下拜，说： 8 “如果你们真的准我安葬妻子，就请你们代我求琐辖的儿子以弗仑， 9 请他当着你们的面，把他田地尽头的麦比拉洞按实价卖给我作坟地。”
10 当时以弗仑正坐在赫人当中，于是他在城门口赫人聚集的地方当众答复亚伯拉罕说： 11 “不可！我主，请听我说，我当着族人的面，把那块地和山洞送给你，你只管去安葬你的妻子！” 12 亚伯拉罕向当地的人下拜， 13 当众对以弗仑说：“你若愿意，请听我说，我要把地钱给你，请你收下，好让我安葬我的妻子。” 14 以弗仑回答说： 15 “我主，请听我说，四公斤半银子的地对你我来说算什么呢？去安葬你的妻子吧！” 16 于是，亚伯拉罕就照以弗仑当众提出的价钱，按通用的重量单位秤了四公斤半银子给他。
17 这样，以弗仑在麦比拉、靠近幔利的那块地和山洞及地界内所有的树木， 18 都归了亚伯拉罕。这是在城门口的赫人面前买下的。
19 之后，亚伯拉罕把妻子撒拉安葬在迦南的幔利附近、麦比拉田间的洞里。幔利就是希伯仑。 20 这块赫人的地和其中的山洞从此成了亚伯拉罕家的坟地。
亚伯拉罕为以撒娶妻
24 亚伯拉罕已经年迈，耶和华在一切的事上都赐福给他。 2 亚伯拉罕对他的老总管说：“请你把手放在我大腿底下， 3 我要你凭耶和华——掌管天地的上帝起誓，你不会找这迦南的女子做我儿子的妻子。 4 你要回到我的家乡，在我的亲族中为以撒物色妻子。” 5 老总管问他：“如果那女子不肯跟我到这里来，我要把你儿子带回你的家乡吗？” 6 亚伯拉罕说：“你千万不可带我的儿子回那里！ 7 因为带领我离开父家和本乡的耶和华——天上的主，曾经向我说话，起誓应许把这片土地赐给我的后代。祂必派天使在你前面引路，帮助你在那里为我儿子找到妻子。 8 如果那女子不肯跟你来，你也算履行了你向我起的誓，只是你不可带我儿子回那里。” 9 于是，老总管就把手放在他主人亚伯拉罕的大腿底下，为这事向他起誓。
10 老总管带着主人的十匹骆驼和各种上好的礼物，启程前往美索不达米亚，来到拿鹤住的城。 11 黄昏，妇女们出来打水的时候，他让骆驼跪在城外的井旁， 12 然后祷告说：“我主人亚伯拉罕的上帝耶和华啊，求你施恩给我家主人亚伯拉罕，让事情今天能够成就。 13 现在，我站在这泉水旁，城里的少女正出来打水。 14 如果我对哪个少女说‘请放下你的水罐，让我喝点水’，如果她说‘请喝，我也打水给你的骆驼喝’，愿那女子做你为自己的仆人以撒选定的妻子。这样，我可以知道你施恩给我的主人了。”
老总管井旁遇利百加
15 老总管的话还没有说完，就有一位名叫利百加的少女肩上扛着水罐走出来。她是彼土利的女儿，彼土利是亚伯拉罕的兄弟拿鹤和密迦所生的儿子。 16 利百加长得非常美丽，是个处女，没有男人亲近过她。她下到井旁，把水罐盛满了水后上来。 17 老总管跑上前去对她说：“求你给我一点水喝。” 18 她回答说：“我主，请喝！”说完，立刻放下水罐，托在手上让他喝。 19 等他喝完以后，利百加又说：“我再为你的骆驼打些水来，让它们喝个饱。” 20 于是，她马上把水罐里的水倒进水槽里，又跑到井边为所有的骆驼打水。 21 当时，老总管在一旁静静地注视着利百加，要看看耶和华是否使他此行顺利。
22 骆驼喝过水以后，老总管拿出一只约六克重的金环和一对约一百一十克重的金镯给利百加， 23 对她说：“请问你是谁的女儿？你父亲家里有地方让我们住宿吗？” 24 利百加回答说：“我是彼土利的女儿，我父亲是拿鹤和密迦的儿子。 25 我家里有充足的粮草，也有地方让你留宿。” 26 老总管听了，就俯伏敬拜耶和华， 27 说：“我主人亚伯拉罕的上帝耶和华当受称颂，因为祂一直以慈爱和信实对待我的主人，引导我一路走到我主人兄弟的家里。”
28 利百加跑回家中，把这事告诉了母亲和家人。 29 利百加有个哥哥名叫拉班。 30 他看见妹妹的金环和手上的金镯，听了她叙述老总管的话，就跑到井旁，见老总管跟骆驼仍然站在那里， 31 便对他说：“你这蒙耶和华赐福的人，请到我家。为什么站在外面呢？我已经为你预备好了房间，也为骆驼预备了地方。” 32 老总管就到了拉班的家里，拉班卸下骆驼背上的东西，给骆驼喂上草料，打水给老总管和随行的人洗脚。 33 他们备好了晚餐给他吃，老总管却说：“不，等我说明来意后再吃。”拉班说：“请说。”
34 老总管说：“我是亚伯拉罕的仆人。 35 耶和华赐给我主人极大的福气，使他非常富有。耶和华赐给他牛群、羊群、金子、银子、男女仆婢、骆驼和驴。 36 我主人的妻子撒拉在晚年生了一个儿子，主人把所有的财产都给了他。 37 主人要我起誓，他说，‘你不可以给我的儿子娶迦南女子为妻， 38 你要到我家乡的亲族中为我儿子物色妻子。’ 39 我问我的主人，‘如果那女子不愿意跟我回来怎么办？’ 40 他说，‘我一向事奉的耶和华必会派天使与你同行，使你一路顺利，为我儿子在家乡的亲族中物色妻子。 41 你去就是履行了你向我起的誓，如果我的亲族不肯把女子交给你，你也算履行了你向我起的誓。’
42 “所以，今天我来到井旁时曾祷告说，‘我主人亚伯拉罕的上帝耶和华啊，求你使我一路顺利。 43 我现在站在井旁，有女子出来打水的时候，我会向她要水喝， 44 如果她说，请喝，我也打水给你的骆驼喝，就让她做你为我家主人的儿子预备的妻子吧。’
45 “我心中的话还没有说完，就看见利百加肩上扛着水罐到井旁打水。我上前向她要水喝， 46 她就连忙放下肩上的水罐，说，‘请喝，我也打水给你的骆驼喝。’我喝了，她又打水给骆驼喝。 47 我问她是谁家的女儿，她说，‘是拿鹤和密迦的儿子彼土利的女儿。’我就替她戴上金鼻环和金手镯， 48 然后俯伏敬拜耶和华——我主人亚伯拉罕的上帝，因为祂引导我走正确的路，找到了主人兄弟的孙女儿给主人的儿子做妻子。 49 现在，你们若愿意以慈爱和信实对待我的主人，答应这门亲事，请告诉我；如果不答应，也请告诉我，好让我知道应该怎么办。”
50 拉班和彼土利回答说：“既然是耶和华的安排，我们不能再多说什么。 51 你看，利百加就在这里，你可以照耶和华的话，把她带回去给你主人的儿子做妻子。” 52 亚伯拉罕的仆人听见这话，就俯伏在地上敬拜耶和华， 53 然后拿出金银首饰和衣裳送给利百加，又把贵重的礼物送给她的哥哥和母亲。 54 老总管和随行的人用过晚饭以后，在那里住了一夜。第二天早晨，老总管说：“请让我返回我主人那里。” 55 但利百加的哥哥和母亲说：“让利百加和我们住上十来天再去吧！” 56 可是，老总管说：“既然耶和华已经使我一路顺利，请你们不要挽留我，请让我回到我主人那里。” 57 他们说：“我们问问利百加的意见吧。” 58 他们就叫来利百加，问她：“你愿意跟这个人同去吗？”利百加说：“我愿意！” 59 于是，他们让利百加和她的奶妈跟老总管及随行的人一同离去， 60 并为利百加祝福，说：
“我们的妹妹啊，
愿你成为千万人之母！
愿你的后代战胜仇敌！”
以撒与利百加成婚
61 于是，利百加和她的婢女们准备妥当，骑上骆驼，跟着老总管离去。
62 那时，以撒住在南地，他刚从庇耳·拉海·莱回来。 63 傍晚的时候，以撒来到田间默想，他抬头一看，见一队骆驼迎面而来。 64 利百加抬头看见以撒，就从骆驼上下来， 65 问老总管：“那从田间来迎接我们的是谁？”老总管说：“是我的主人！”利百加听了就蒙上面纱。 66 老总管向以撒讲述整个事情的经过。 67 以撒就带利百加进入他母亲撒拉的帐篷，娶她为妻，并且很爱她。自从母亲去世后，以撒这才得到安慰。
亚伯拉罕的其他后代
25 亚伯拉罕又娶了基土拉。 2 基土拉为亚伯拉罕生了心兰、约珊、米但、米甸、伊施巴和书亚。 3 约珊生了示巴和底但，底但的子孙是亚书利族、利都示族和利乌米族。 4 米甸的儿子是以法、以弗、哈诺、亚比大和以勒大。这些都是基土拉的子孙。 5 亚伯拉罕把所有的财产都给了以撒。 6 他趁自己还在世的时候，把一些礼物送给他的妾所生的儿子们，让他们离开他的儿子以撒到东方去。
7 亚伯拉罕活了一百七十五岁， 8 享尽天年，寿终正寝，归到他祖先那里。 9 他的两个儿子以撒和以实玛利把他安葬在麦比拉洞，那山洞在幔利附近、赫人琐辖的儿子以弗仑的地里。 10 那块地是亚伯拉罕向赫人买的，他和妻子撒拉葬在一起。 11 亚伯拉罕去世以后，上帝赐福给他的儿子以撒。以撒住在庇耳·拉海·莱附近。
12 以实玛利是亚伯拉罕和撒拉的婢女埃及人夏甲所生的儿子。 13 以下是以实玛利的儿子，按出生的次序是：尼拜约、基达、亚德别、米比衫、 14 米施玛、度玛、玛撒、 15 哈大、提玛、伊突、拿非施、基底玛。 16 他这十二个儿子后来分别成了十二个族的族长，各有自己的村庄和营寨。 17 以实玛利活了一百三十七岁，寿终正寝，归到他祖先那里。 18 他子孙居住的地方从哈腓拉一直延伸到埃及东面、通往亚述方向的书珥，他们与其他亲属作对[b]。
利百加生以扫和雅各
19 以下是关于亚伯拉罕的儿子以撒的记载。
亚伯拉罕生以撒。 20 以撒四十岁娶利百加，利百加是巴旦·亚兰的亚兰人彼土利的女儿、拉班的妹妹。 21 以撒因为利百加没有生育，就为她祈求耶和华。耶和华应允了他的祈求，利百加就怀了孕。 22 两个胎儿在她腹中彼此相争，她说：“怎么会这样？”于是，她去求问耶和华。 23 耶和华对她说：
“你腹中有两个国家，
你要生出两个敌对的民族，
一族要比另一族强大，
将来大的要服侍小的。”
24 到了生产的时候，利百加果然生下双胞胎。 25 先出生的婴儿遍体通红，浑身长毛，好像穿了皮衣，因此给他取名叫以扫[c]。 26 随后出生的弟弟紧紧抓着以扫的脚跟，因此给他取名叫雅各[d]。那时以撒六十岁。
以扫出卖长子名分
27 孩子们渐渐长大，以扫擅长狩猎，常在田野活动；雅各生来安静，喜欢待在家里。 28 以撒疼爱以扫，因为他喜欢吃以扫带回来的猎物，利百加却疼爱雅各。
29 一天，雅各正在熬汤，以扫筋疲力尽地从田野回来。 30 以扫对雅各说：“我要饿死了，给我一些红豆汤喝吧！”因此，以扫又叫以东[e]。 31 雅各回答说：“好，你今天把长子的名分卖给我吧！” 32 以扫说：“我都快饿死了，长子的名分对我有什么用呢？” 33 雅各说：“好，你现在向我起誓保证吧！”于是，以扫就起誓把长子的名分卖给了雅各。 34 雅各把饼和红豆汤给以扫，以扫吃完喝完便走了。以扫轻看自己长子的名分。
以撒寄居基拉耳
26 亚伯拉罕在世的时候，那地方闹过一次饥荒，这时又闹饥荒。以撒就迁到基拉耳的非利士王亚比米勒那里。 2 耶和华向以撒显现说：“不要下埃及去，要住在我指示你住的地方。 3 你寄居在这里，我必与你同在，赐福给你，因为我必把这些土地赐给你和你的后代，坚立我对你父亲亚伯拉罕的誓约。 4 我必使你的后代多如繁星，将这些土地都赐给他们，天下万国必因你的后裔而蒙福。 5 因为亚伯拉罕听从我的话，遵守我的吩咐、命令、典章和律法。”
亚比米勒斥责以撒
6 于是，以撒就在基拉耳住下来。 7 那里的人问起他的妻子时，他便说：“她是我妹妹。”他不敢说：“她是我妻子。”他担心当地的人会因为利百加而害他，因为利百加长得非常美丽。 8 以撒在那里住了许久。一天，非利士王亚比米勒从窗口看见以撒和利百加亲热的情形， 9 便召见以撒，问他：“她明明是你妻子，为什么你说她是你妹妹呢？”以撒回答说：“我担心别人为了她而杀害我！” 10 亚比米勒说：“你怎么可以这样对我们呢？万一百姓中有人想占有她，你就使我们陷入罪中了。” 11 于是，亚比米勒下令全国：凡伤害他们二人的，必被处死。
12 以撒在那里耕种，耶和华赐福给他，那一年他得了百倍的收成。 13 他的财富越来越多，成了大富户。 14 他拥有很多的牛羊和仆婢，非利士人嫉妒他。 15 他父亲亚伯拉罕生前派人挖的那些水井，全被非利士人用土塞住了。 16 亚比米勒对以撒说：“请你离开我们吧，因为你太强盛了。” 17 以撒就离开那里，把帐篷迁往基拉耳谷居住。 18 他的父亲亚伯拉罕生前挖的水井都被非利士人塞住了，以撒便重新挖开，并沿用父亲生前给那些水井起的名字。 19 以撒的牧人在谷中挖得一口活水井， 20 基拉耳的牧人与以撒的牧人争吵起来，都说：“这口井是我们的。”于是，以撒便称那口井为埃色[f]。 21 后来，以撒的仆人又挖了一口井，他们双方又为那口井发生争执，以撒便称那口井为西提拿[g]。 22 以撒离开那里，又挖了一口水井。这次，他们没有为那口井争吵。所以，以撒称那口井为利河伯[h]。以撒说：“如今耶和华给了我们一个宽阔的地方，我们可以在这里繁荣兴旺。”
23 以撒从那里上别示巴去。 24 当天晚上，耶和华向他显现说：“我是你父亲亚伯拉罕的上帝。你不用惧怕，因为我与你同在。为了我仆人亚伯拉罕的缘故，我必赐福给你，使你子孙众多。” 25 以撒在那里筑了一座坛求告耶和华，并且在那里搭起帐篷住下来。他的仆人又在那里挖了一口井。
以撒和亚比米勒起誓立约
26 一天，亚比米勒带着他的参谋亚户撒、将领非各从基拉耳来见以撒。 27 以撒见到他们就说：“你们既然憎恨我，把我赶走，为什么又来找我？” 28 他们回答说：“我们清楚知道耶和华与你同在，我们双方应该订立誓约。 29 请你起誓保证不会伤害我们，就像我们没有侵犯你，总是善待你，让你平安地离开一样。你是蒙耶和华赐福的人。” 30 于是，以撒为他们摆设宴席，一同吃喝。 31 第二天早晨，以撒和他们互相起誓之后，送他们平安地离去。 32 在同一天，以撒的仆人将挖井的事告诉他，说：“我们找到水了。” 33 以撒便称那口井为示巴[i]，因此那城叫别示巴，沿用至今。
以扫娶妻
34 以扫四十岁时，娶了赫人比利的女儿犹蒂与赫人以伦的女儿巴实抹。 35 她们二人常使以撒和利百加伤心。
以撒为儿子祝福
27 以撒年老的时候，眼睛昏花，几乎看不见。他把大儿子以扫叫来，说：“我儿啊！”以扫说：“我在这里。” 2 以撒说：“我年老了，不知道还能活多久。 3 现在，带着你的弓箭去田野为我打些野味来， 4 照我喜欢的口味，做成美食给我吃，以便我在死前给你祝福。”
5 利百加听见了以撒跟儿子以扫说的话。以扫出去打猎后， 6 利百加就对她儿子雅各说：“我听见你父亲对你哥哥以扫说， 7 ‘你去打些野味回来，做成美食给我吃，以便我死之前在耶和华面前给你祝福。’ 8 现在，孩子，你要听我的话，照我的吩咐去做。 9 你到羊群里选两头上好的山羊羔，我好照你父亲喜爱的口味做成美食， 10 由你拿去给他吃，让他死前为你祝福。”
11 雅各对母亲利百加说：“哥哥以扫浑身是毛，我的皮肤光滑。 12 如果父亲用手摸我，一定会发觉我骗他，那时候我不但得不到祝福，反会招来咒诅。” 13 他母亲利百加对他说：“孩子啊，有咒诅，我来承担。你只管听我的话，把羊羔牵来。”
14 于是，雅各把羊牵来交给母亲，他母亲就照他父亲喜爱的口味做成美食。 15 利百加又拿了大儿子以扫留在家里最好的衣服，给小儿子雅各穿上， 16 再用山羊皮把雅各光滑的手和脖子都包起来， 17 然后把做好的美味和饼交给雅各。
18 雅各来到父亲跟前，叫了一声：“父亲。”以撒回答说：“我在这里，孩子，你是谁？” 19 雅各对父亲说：“我是你的大儿子以扫，你吩咐我的事，我已经办好了。请你坐起来，吃我打的野味，然后给我祝福。” 20 以撒对他说：“孩子，你怎么这么快就打到野味了？”雅各回答说：“因为你的上帝耶和华让我碰见好机会。” 21 以撒说：“孩子，过来，让我摸摸看你是不是我儿以扫。” 22 雅各挨到父亲跟前，以撒摸着他说：“声音是雅各的声音，手却是以扫的手。” 23 因为雅各手上有毛，与他哥哥以扫的手一样，以撒分辨不出来，就给他祝福。 24 以撒又问：“你真是我的儿子以扫吗？”雅各回答说：“是。” 25 以撒便说：“把野味拿给我，我吃了你打的野味就为你祝福。”雅各递上野味，以撒吃了；雅各又拿酒给他喝，他也喝了。 26 以撒对他说：“孩子，你过来亲吻我。” 27 雅各就挨上前去亲了父亲。以撒闻到他衣服上的气味，就祝福他说：
“我儿子的香气就像蒙耶和华赐福之田地的香气。
28 愿上帝赐你天上的甘霖、肥沃的土地并丰富的五谷和新酒。
29 愿万民都臣服于你，
万国都向你下拜。
愿你成为你弟兄的主人，
愿你母亲的儿子向你下拜。
咒诅你的，愿他受咒诅；
祝福你的，愿他蒙祝福。”
以扫求父亲祝福
30 雅各接受了以撒的祝福才刚离开，他的哥哥以扫就打猎回来了。 31 以扫把野味煮好，拿到父亲跟前，说：“父亲，请起来吃你儿子煮的野味，然后给我祝福。” 32 他父亲以撒问道：“你是谁？”以扫回答说：“我是你的长子以扫。” 33 以撒大为震惊，说：“你没有来之前，拿野味来给我吃的是谁呢？我已经吃了，也给那人祝福了，他将来必蒙祝福。”
34 以扫听了放声痛哭，说：“父亲啊，求你也为我祝福！” 35 以撒说：“你弟弟已经用诡计把你的福分夺去了。” 36 以扫说：“怪不得他叫雅各，他已经骗了我两次，先前把我长子的名分夺去，现在又夺去我的福分！”接着他对父亲说：“难道你没有留下别的祝福可以给我吗？”
37 以撒对以扫说：“我已经立他做你的主人，使他的众弟兄做他的仆人，并给他五谷和新酒。孩子啊，我还能为你做什么呢？” 38 以扫对父亲说：“父亲啊，你只有一个祝福吗？父亲啊，求你也为我祝福！”以扫又放声大哭。 39 以撒对他说：
“你住的地方必远离肥沃的土地，
也不会有天上的甘霖。
40 你必倚靠刀剑生活，
又必服侍你的弟弟。
到你无法忍受的时候，
你必挣脱颈上的重轭。”
雅各逃往舅父家
41 以扫因为父亲把祝福给了雅各，就对雅各怀恨在心，暗自思量说：“父亲已经不久人世，他死后，我要把雅各杀掉！” 42 以扫的计谋传到利百加耳中。她就派人把雅各叫来，对他说：“你哥哥以扫想要杀你泄愤！ 43 孩子，听我的话，现在就逃到哈兰你舅舅拉班那里， 44 与他住些日子，一直住到你哥哥的气消了。 45 等他气消了，忘了你对他所做的事，我会派人接你回来。我何必在一天之内失去你们两个呢？” 46 利百加对以撒说：“我被这些赫人女子烦死了。如果雅各也像以扫一样娶那些赫人女子为妻，我活着还有什么意思呢？”

雅各的梦

Abraham Tested
22 Some time later God tested(A) Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!”
“Here I am,”(B) he replied.
2 Then God said, “Take your son(C), your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah.(D) Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering(E) on a mountain I will show you.(F)”
3 Early the next morning(G) Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. 4 On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. 5 He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.(H)”
6 Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac,(I) and he himself carried the fire and the knife.(J) As the two of them went on together, 7 Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father?”
“Yes, my son?” Abraham replied.
“The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb(K) for the burnt offering?”
8 Abraham answered, “God himself will provide(L) the lamb(M) for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together.
9 When they reached the place God had told him about,(N) Abraham built an altar(O) there and arranged the wood(P) on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar,(Q) on top of the wood. 10 Then he reached out his hand and took the knife(R) to slay his son.(S) 11 But the angel of the Lord(T) called out to him from heaven,(U) “Abraham! Abraham!”(V)
“Here I am,”(W) he replied.
12 “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God,(X) because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.(Y)”
13 Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram[a] caught by its horns.(Z) He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son.(AA) 14 So Abraham called(AB) that place The Lord(AC) Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.(AD)”
15 The angel of the Lord(AE) called to Abraham from heaven(AF) a second time 16 and said, “I swear by myself,(AG) declares the Lord, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son,(AH) 17 I will surely bless you(AI) and make your descendants(AJ) as numerous as the stars in the sky(AK) and as the sand on the seashore.(AL) Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies,(AM) 18 and through your offspring[b] all nations on earth will be blessed,[c](AN) because you have obeyed me.”(AO)
19 Then Abraham returned to his servants, and they set off together for Beersheba.(AP) And Abraham stayed in Beersheba.
Nahor’s Sons
20 Some time later Abraham was told, “Milkah is also a mother; she has borne sons to your brother Nahor:(AQ) 21 Uz(AR) the firstborn, Buz(AS) his brother, Kemuel (the father of Aram), 22 Kesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph and Bethuel.(AT)” 23 Bethuel became the father of Rebekah.(AU) Milkah bore these eight sons to Abraham’s brother Nahor.(AV) 24 His concubine,(AW) whose name was Reumah, also had sons: Tebah, Gaham, Tahash and Maakah.
The Death of Sarah
23 Sarah lived to be a hundred and twenty-seven years old. 2 She died at Kiriath Arba(AX) (that is, Hebron)(AY) in the land of Canaan, and Abraham went to mourn for Sarah and to weep over her.(AZ)
3 Then Abraham rose from beside his dead wife and spoke to the Hittites.[d](BA) He said, 4 “I am a foreigner and stranger(BB) among you. Sell me some property for a burial site here so I can bury my dead.(BC)”
5 The Hittites replied to Abraham, 6 “Sir, listen to us. You are a mighty prince(BD) among us. Bury your dead in the choicest of our tombs. None of us will refuse you his tomb for burying your dead.”
7 Then Abraham rose and bowed down before the people of the land, the Hittites. 8 He said to them, “If you are willing to let me bury my dead, then listen to me and intercede with Ephron son of Zohar(BE) on my behalf 9 so he will sell me the cave of Machpelah,(BF) which belongs to him and is at the end of his field. Ask him to sell it to me for the full price as a burial site among you.”
10 Ephron the Hittite was sitting among his people and he replied to Abraham in the hearing of all the Hittites(BG) who had come to the gate(BH) of his city. 11 “No, my lord,” he said. “Listen to me; I give[e](BI) you the field, and I give[f] you the cave that is in it. I give[g] it to you in the presence of my people. Bury your dead.”
12 Again Abraham bowed down before the people of the land 13 and he said to Ephron in their hearing, “Listen to me, if you will. I will pay the price of the field. Accept it from me so I can bury my dead there.”
14 Ephron answered Abraham, 15 “Listen to me, my lord; the land is worth four hundred shekels[h] of silver,(BJ) but what is that between you and me? Bury your dead.”
16 Abraham agreed to Ephron’s terms and weighed out for him the price he had named in the hearing of the Hittites: four hundred shekels of silver,(BK) according to the weight current among the merchants.(BL)
17 So Ephron’s field in Machpelah(BM) near Mamre(BN)—both the field and the cave in it, and all the trees within the borders of the field—was deeded 18 to Abraham as his property(BO) in the presence of all the Hittites(BP) who had come to the gate(BQ) of the city. 19 Afterward Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave in the field of Machpelah(BR) near Mamre (which is at Hebron(BS)) in the land of Canaan.(BT) 20 So the field and the cave in it were deeded(BU) to Abraham by the Hittites as a burial site.(BV)
Isaac and Rebekah
24 Abraham was now very old,(BW) and the Lord had blessed(BX) him in every way.(BY) 2 He said to the senior servant(BZ) in his household, the one in charge of all that he had,(CA) “Put your hand under my thigh.(CB) 3 I want you to swear(CC) by the Lord, the God of heaven(CD) and the God of earth,(CE) that you will not get a wife for my son(CF) from the daughters of the Canaanites,(CG) among whom I am living,(CH) 4 but will go to my country and my own relatives(CI) and get a wife for my son Isaac.(CJ)”
5 The servant asked him, “What if the woman is unwilling to come back with me to this land?(CK) Shall I then take your son back to the country you came from?(CL)”
6 “Make sure that you do not take my son back there,”(CM) Abraham said. 7 “The Lord, the God of heaven,(CN) who brought me out of my father’s household and my native land(CO) and who spoke to me and promised me on oath, saying, ‘To your offspring[i](CP) I will give this land’(CQ)—he will send his angel before you(CR) so that you can get a wife for my son from there. 8 If the woman is unwilling to come back with you, then you will be released from this oath(CS) of mine. Only do not take my son back there.”(CT) 9 So the servant put his hand under the thigh(CU) of his master(CV) Abraham and swore an oath to him concerning this matter.
10 Then the servant left, taking with him ten of his master’s camels(CW) loaded with all kinds of good things(CX) from his master. He set out for Aram Naharaim[j](CY) and made his way to the town of Nahor.(CZ) 11 He had the camels kneel down near the well(DA) outside the town; it was toward evening, the time the women go out to draw water.(DB)
12 Then he prayed, “Lord, God of my master Abraham,(DC) make me successful(DD) today, and show kindness(DE) to my master Abraham. 13 See, I am standing beside this spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water.(DF) 14 May it be that when I say to a young woman, ‘Please let down your jar that I may have a drink,’ and she says, ‘Drink,(DG) and I’ll water your camels too’(DH)—let her be the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac.(DI) By this I will know(DJ) that you have shown kindness to my master.”
15 Before he had finished praying,(DK) Rebekah(DL) came out with her jar on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel(DM) son of Milkah,(DN) who was the wife of Abraham’s brother Nahor.(DO) 16 The woman was very beautiful,(DP) a virgin;(DQ) no man had ever slept with her. She went down to the spring, filled her jar and came up again.
17 The servant hurried to meet her and said, “Please give me a little water from your jar.”(DR)
18 “Drink,(DS) my lord,” she said, and quickly lowered the jar to her hands and gave him a drink.
19 After she had given him a drink, she said, “I’ll draw water for your camels(DT) too,(DU) until they have had enough to drink.” 20 So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough, ran back to the well to draw more water, and drew enough for all his camels.(DV) 21 Without saying a word, the man watched her closely to learn whether or not the Lord had made his journey successful.(DW)
22 When the camels had finished drinking, the man took out a gold nose ring(DX) weighing a beka[k] and two gold bracelets(DY) weighing ten shekels.[l] 23 Then he asked, “Whose daughter are you?(DZ) Please tell me, is there room in your father’s house for us to spend the night?(EA)”
24 She answered him, “I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son that Milkah bore to Nahor.(EB)” 25 And she added, “We have plenty of straw and fodder,(EC) as well as room for you to spend the night.”
26 Then the man bowed down and worshiped the Lord,(ED) 27 saying, “Praise be to the Lord,(EE) the God of my master Abraham,(EF) who has not abandoned his kindness and faithfulness(EG) to my master. As for me, the Lord has led me on the journey(EH) to the house of my master’s relatives.”(EI)
28 The young woman ran and told her mother’s household about these things.(EJ) 29 Now Rebekah had a brother named Laban,(EK) and he hurried out to the man at the spring. 30 As soon as he had seen the nose ring, and the bracelets on his sister’s arms,(EL) and had heard Rebekah tell what the man said to her, he went out to the man and found him standing by the camels near the spring. 31 “Come, you who are blessed by the Lord,”(EM) he said. “Why are you standing out here? I have prepared the house and a place for the camels.”
32 So the man went to the house, and the camels were unloaded. Straw and fodder(EN) were brought for the camels, and water for him and his men to wash their feet.(EO) 33 Then food was set before him, but he said, “I will not eat until I have told you what I have to say.”
“Then tell us,” Laban said.
34 So he said, “I am Abraham’s servant.(EP) 35 The Lord has blessed(EQ) my master abundantly,(ER) and he has become wealthy.(ES) He has given him sheep and cattle, silver and gold, male and female servants, and camels and donkeys.(ET) 36 My master’s wife Sarah has borne him a son in her old age,(EU) and he has given him everything he owns.(EV) 37 And my master made me swear an oath,(EW) and said, ‘You must not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I live,(EX) 38 but go to my father’s family and to my own clan, and get a wife for my son.’(EY)
39 “Then I asked my master, ‘What if the woman will not come back with me?’(EZ)
40 “He replied, ‘The Lord, before whom I have walked faithfully,(FA) will send his angel with you(FB) and make your journey a success,(FC) so that you can get a wife for my son from my own clan and from my father’s family.(FD) 41 You will be released from my oath if, when you go to my clan, they refuse to give her to you—then you will be released from my oath.’(FE)
42 “When I came to the spring today, I said, ‘Lord, God of my master Abraham, if you will, please grant success(FF) to the journey on which I have come. 43 See, I am standing beside this spring.(FG) If a young woman(FH) comes out to draw water and I say to her, “Please let me drink a little water from your jar,”(FI) 44 and if she says to me, “Drink, and I’ll draw water for your camels too,” let her be the one the Lord has chosen for my master’s son.’(FJ)
45 “Before I finished praying in my heart,(FK) Rebekah came out, with her jar on her shoulder.(FL) She went down to the spring and drew water, and I said to her, ‘Please give me a drink.’(FM)
46 “She quickly lowered her jar from her shoulder and said, ‘Drink, and I’ll water your camels too.’(FN) So I drank, and she watered the camels also.(FO)
47 “I asked her, ‘Whose daughter are you?’(FP)
“She said, ‘The daughter of Bethuel(FQ) son of Nahor, whom Milkah bore to him.’(FR)
“Then I put the ring in her nose(FS) and the bracelets on her arms,(FT) 48 and I bowed down and worshiped the Lord.(FU) I praised the Lord, the God of my master Abraham,(FV) who had led me on the right road to get the granddaughter of my master’s brother for his son.(FW) 49 Now if you will show kindness and faithfulness(FX) to my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, so I may know which way to turn.”
50 Laban and Bethuel(FY) answered, “This is from the Lord;(FZ) we can say nothing to you one way or the other.(GA) 51 Here is Rebekah; take her and go, and let her become the wife of your master’s son, as the Lord has directed.(GB)”
52 When Abraham’s servant heard what they said, he bowed down to the ground before the Lord.(GC) 53 Then the servant brought out gold and silver jewelry and articles of clothing(GD) and gave them to Rebekah; he also gave costly gifts(GE) to her brother and to her mother. 54 Then he and the men who were with him ate and drank and spent the night there.
When they got up the next morning, he said, “Send me on my way(GF) to my master.”
55 But her brother and her mother replied, “Let the young woman remain with us ten days or so;(GG) then you[m] may go.”
56 But he said to them, “Do not detain me, now that the Lord has granted success(GH) to my journey. Send me on my way(GI) so I may go to my master.”
57 Then they said, “Let’s call the young woman and ask her about it.”(GJ) 58 So they called Rebekah and asked her, “Will you go with this man?”
“I will go,”(GK) she said.
59 So they sent their sister Rebekah on her way,(GL) along with her nurse(GM) and Abraham’s servant and his men. 60 And they blessed(GN) Rebekah and said to her,
“Our sister, may you increase
to thousands upon thousands;(GO)
may your offspring possess
the cities of their enemies.”(GP)
61 Then Rebekah and her attendants(GQ) got ready and mounted the camels and went back with the man. So the servant took Rebekah and left.
62 Now Isaac had come from Beer Lahai Roi,(GR) for he was living in the Negev.(GS) 63 He went out to the field one evening to meditate,[n](GT) and as he looked up,(GU) he saw camels approaching. 64 Rebekah also looked up and saw Isaac. She got down from her camel(GV) 65 and asked the servant, “Who is that man in the field coming to meet us?”
“He is my master,” the servant answered. So she took her veil(GW) and covered herself.
66 Then the servant told Isaac all he had done. 67 Isaac brought her into the tent(GX) of his mother Sarah,(GY) and he married Rebekah.(GZ) So she became his wife, and he loved her;(HA) and Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.(HB)
The Death of Abraham(HC)
25 Abraham had taken another wife, whose name was Keturah. 2 She bore him Zimran,(HD) Jokshan, Medan, Midian,(HE) Ishbak and Shuah.(HF) 3 Jokshan was the father of Sheba(HG) and Dedan;(HH) the descendants of Dedan were the Ashurites, the Letushites and the Leummites. 4 The sons of Midian were Ephah,(HI) Epher, Hanok, Abida and Eldaah. All these were descendants of Keturah.
5 Abraham left everything he owned to Isaac.(HJ) 6 But while he was still living, he gave gifts to the sons of his concubines(HK) and sent them away from his son Isaac(HL) to the land of the east.(HM)
7 Abraham lived a hundred and seventy-five years.(HN) 8 Then Abraham breathed his last and died at a good old age,(HO) an old man and full of years; and he was gathered to his people.(HP) 9 His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him(HQ) in the cave of Machpelah(HR) near Mamre,(HS) in the field of Ephron(HT) son of Zohar the Hittite,(HU) 10 the field Abraham had bought from the Hittites.[o](HV) There Abraham was buried with his wife Sarah. 11 After Abraham’s death, God blessed his son Isaac,(HW) who then lived near Beer Lahai Roi.(HX)
Ishmael’s Sons(HY)
12 This is the account(HZ) of the family line of Abraham’s son Ishmael, whom Sarah’s slave, Hagar(IA) the Egyptian, bore to Abraham.(IB)
13 These are the names of the sons of Ishmael, listed in the order of their birth: Nebaioth(IC) the firstborn of Ishmael, Kedar,(ID) Adbeel, Mibsam, 14 Mishma, Dumah,(IE) Massa, 15 Hadad, Tema,(IF) Jetur,(IG) Naphish and Kedemah. 16 These were the sons of Ishmael, and these are the names of the twelve tribal rulers(IH) according to their settlements and camps.(II) 17 Ishmael lived a hundred and thirty-seven years. He breathed his last and died, and he was gathered to his people.(IJ) 18 His descendants(IK) settled in the area from Havilah to Shur,(IL) near the eastern border of Egypt, as you go toward Ashur. And they lived in hostility toward[p] all the tribes related to them.(IM)
Jacob and Esau
19 This is the account(IN) of the family line of Abraham’s son Isaac.
Abraham became the father of Isaac, 20 and Isaac was forty years old(IO) when he married Rebekah(IP) daughter of Bethuel(IQ) the Aramean from Paddan Aram[q](IR) and sister of Laban(IS) the Aramean.(IT)
21 Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of his wife, because she was childless.(IU) The Lord answered his prayer,(IV) and his wife Rebekah became pregnant. 22 The babies jostled each other within her, and she said, “Why is this happening to me?” So she went to inquire of the Lord.(IW)
23 The Lord said to her,
“Two nations(IX) are in your womb,
and two peoples from within you will be separated;
one people will be stronger than the other,
and the older will serve the younger.(IY)”
24 When the time came for her to give birth,(IZ) there were twin boys in her womb.(JA) 25 The first to come out was red,(JB) and his whole body was like a hairy garment;(JC) so they named him Esau.[r](JD) 26 After this, his brother came out,(JE) with his hand grasping Esau’s heel;(JF) so he was named Jacob.[s](JG) Isaac was sixty years old(JH) when Rebekah gave birth to them.
27 The boys grew up, and Esau became a skillful hunter,(JI) a man of the open country,(JJ) while Jacob was content to stay at home among the tents. 28 Isaac, who had a taste for wild game,(JK) loved Esau, but Rebekah loved Jacob.(JL)
29 Once when Jacob was cooking some stew,(JM) Esau came in from the open country,(JN) famished. 30 He said to Jacob, “Quick, let me have some of that red stew!(JO) I’m famished!” (That is why he was also called Edom.[t])(JP)
31 Jacob replied, “First sell me your birthright.(JQ)”
32 “Look, I am about to die,” Esau said. “What good is the birthright to me?”
33 But Jacob said, “Swear(JR) to me first.” So he swore an oath to him, selling his birthright(JS) to Jacob.
34 Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew.(JT) He ate and drank, and then got up and left.
So Esau despised his birthright.
Isaac and Abimelek(JU)
26 Now there was a famine in the land(JV)—besides the previous famine in Abraham’s time—and Isaac went to Abimelek king of the Philistines(JW) in Gerar.(JX) 2 The Lord appeared(JY) to Isaac and said, “Do not go down to Egypt;(JZ) live in the land where I tell you to live.(KA) 3 Stay in this land for a while,(KB) and I will be with you(KC) and will bless you.(KD) For to you and your descendants I will give all these lands(KE) and will confirm the oath I swore to your father Abraham.(KF) 4 I will make your descendants(KG) as numerous as the stars in the sky(KH) and will give them all these lands,(KI) and through your offspring[u] all nations on earth will be blessed,[v](KJ) 5 because Abraham obeyed me(KK) and did everything I required of him, keeping my commands, my decrees(KL) and my instructions.(KM)” 6 So Isaac stayed in Gerar.(KN)
7 When the men of that place asked him about his wife, he said, “She is my sister,(KO)” because he was afraid to say, “She is my wife.” He thought, “The men of this place might kill me on account of Rebekah, because she is beautiful.”
8 When Isaac had been there a long time, Abimelek king of the Philistines(KP) looked down from a window and saw Isaac caressing his wife Rebekah. 9 So Abimelek summoned Isaac and said, “She is really your wife! Why did you say, ‘She is my sister’?(KQ)”
Isaac answered him, “Because I thought I might lose my life on account of her.”
10 Then Abimelek said, “What is this you have done to us?(KR) One of the men might well have slept with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us.”
11 So Abimelek gave orders to all the people: “Anyone who harms(KS) this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.”(KT)
12 Isaac planted crops in that land and the same year reaped a hundredfold,(KU) because the Lord blessed him.(KV) 13 The man became rich, and his wealth continued to grow until he became very wealthy.(KW) 14 He had so many flocks and herds and servants(KX) that the Philistines envied him.(KY) 15 So all the wells(KZ) that his father’s servants had dug in the time of his father Abraham, the Philistines stopped up,(LA) filling them with earth.
16 Then Abimelek said to Isaac, “Move away from us;(LB) you have become too powerful for us.(LC)”
17 So Isaac moved away from there and encamped in the Valley of Gerar,(LD) where he settled. 18 Isaac reopened the wells(LE) that had been dug in the time of his father Abraham, which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died, and he gave them the same names his father had given them.
19 Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and discovered a well of fresh water there. 20 But the herders of Gerar quarreled(LF) with those of Isaac and said, “The water is ours!”(LG) So he named the well Esek,[w] because they disputed with him. 21 Then they dug another well, but they quarreled(LH) over that one also; so he named it Sitnah.[x] 22 He moved on from there and dug another well, and no one quarreled over it. He named it Rehoboth,[y](LI) saying, “Now the Lord has given us room(LJ) and we will flourish(LK) in the land.”
23 From there he went up to Beersheba.(LL) 24 That night the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham.(LM) Do not be afraid,(LN) for I am with you;(LO) I will bless you and will increase the number of your descendants(LP) for the sake of my servant Abraham.”(LQ)
25 Isaac built an altar(LR) there and called on the name of the Lord.(LS) There he pitched his tent, and there his servants dug a well.(LT)
26 Meanwhile, Abimelek had come to him from Gerar, with Ahuzzath his personal adviser and Phicol the commander of his forces.(LU) 27 Isaac asked them, “Why have you come to me, since you were hostile to me and sent me away?(LV)”
28 They answered, “We saw clearly that the Lord was with you;(LW) so we said, ‘There ought to be a sworn agreement between us’—between us and you. Let us make a treaty(LX) with you 29 that you will do us no harm,(LY) just as we did not harm you but always treated you well and sent you away peacefully. And now you are blessed by the Lord.”(LZ)
30 Isaac then made a feast(MA) for them, and they ate and drank. 31 Early the next morning the men swore an oath(MB) to each other. Then Isaac sent them on their way, and they went away peacefully.
32 That day Isaac’s servants came and told him about the well(MC) they had dug. They said, “We’ve found water!” 33 He called it Shibah,[z] and to this day the name of the town has been Beersheba.[aa](MD)
Jacob Takes Esau’s Blessing
34 When Esau was forty years old,(ME) he married Judith daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and also Basemath daughter of Elon the Hittite.(MF) 35 They were a source of grief to Isaac and Rebekah.(MG)
27 When Isaac was old and his eyes were so weak that he could no longer see,(MH) he called for Esau his older son(MI) and said to him, “My son.”
“Here I am,” he answered.
2 Isaac said, “I am now an old man and don’t know the day of my death.(MJ) 3 Now then, get your equipment—your quiver and bow—and go out to the open country(MK) to hunt some wild game for me. 4 Prepare me the kind of tasty food I like(ML) and bring it to me to eat, so that I may give you my blessing(MM) before I die.”(MN)
5 Now Rebekah was listening as Isaac spoke to his son Esau. When Esau left for the open country(MO) to hunt game and bring it back, 6 Rebekah said to her son Jacob,(MP) “Look, I overheard your father say to your brother Esau, 7 ‘Bring me some game and prepare me some tasty food to eat, so that I may give you my blessing in the presence of the Lord before I die.’(MQ) 8 Now, my son, listen carefully and do what I tell you:(MR) 9 Go out to the flock and bring me two choice young goats,(MS) so I can prepare some tasty food for your father, just the way he likes it.(MT) 10 Then take it to your father to eat, so that he may give you his blessing(MU) before he dies.”
11 Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, “But my brother Esau is a hairy man(MV) while I have smooth skin. 12 What if my father touches me?(MW) I would appear to be tricking him and would bring down a curse(MX) on myself rather than a blessing.”
13 His mother said to him, “My son, let the curse fall on me.(MY) Just do what I say;(MZ) go and get them for me.”
14 So he went and got them and brought them to his mother, and she prepared some tasty food, just the way his father liked it.(NA) 15 Then Rebekah took the best clothes(NB) of Esau her older son,(NC) which she had in the house, and put them on her younger son Jacob. 16 She also covered his hands and the smooth part of his neck with the goatskins.(ND) 17 Then she handed to her son Jacob the tasty food and the bread she had made.
18 He went to his father and said, “My father.”
“Yes, my son,” he answered. “Who is it?”(NE)
19 Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn.(NF) I have done as you told me. Please sit up and eat some of my game,(NG) so that you may give me your blessing.”(NH)
20 Isaac asked his son, “How did you find it so quickly, my son?”
“The Lord your God gave me success,(NI)” he replied.
21 Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Come near so I can touch you,(NJ) my son, to know whether you really are my son Esau or not.”
22 Jacob went close to his father Isaac,(NK) who touched(NL) him and said, “The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau.” 23 He did not recognize him, for his hands were hairy like those of his brother Esau;(NM) so he proceeded to bless him. 24 “Are you really my son Esau?” he asked.
“I am,” he replied.
25 Then he said, “My son, bring me some of your game to eat, so that I may give you my blessing.”(NN)
Jacob brought it to him and he ate; and he brought some wine and he drank. 26 Then his father Isaac said to him, “Come here, my son, and kiss me.”
27 So he went to him and kissed(NO) him(NP). When Isaac caught the smell of his clothes,(NQ) he blessed him and said,
“Ah, the smell of my son
is like the smell of a field
that the Lord has blessed.(NR)
28 May God give you heaven’s dew(NS)
and earth’s richness(NT)—
an abundance of grain(NU) and new wine.(NV)
29 May nations serve you
and peoples bow down to you.(NW)
Be lord over your brothers,
and may the sons of your mother bow down to you.(NX)
May those who curse you be cursed
and those who bless you be blessed.(NY)”
30 After Isaac finished blessing him, and Jacob had scarcely left his father’s presence, his brother Esau came in from hunting. 31 He too prepared some tasty food and brought it to his father. Then he said to him, “My father, please sit up and eat some of my game, so that you may give me your blessing.”(NZ)
32 His father Isaac asked him, “Who are you?”(OA)
“I am your son,” he answered, “your firstborn, Esau.(OB)”
33 Isaac trembled violently and said, “Who was it, then, that hunted game and brought it to me?(OC) I ate it just before you came and I blessed him—and indeed he will be blessed!(OD)”
34 When Esau heard his father’s words, he burst out with a loud and bitter cry(OE) and said to his father, “Bless(OF) me—me too, my father!”
35 But he said, “Your brother came deceitfully(OG) and took your blessing.”(OH)
36 Esau said, “Isn’t he rightly named Jacob[ab]?(OI) This is the second time he has taken advantage of(OJ) me: He took my birthright,(OK) and now he’s taken my blessing!”(OL) Then he asked, “Haven’t you reserved any blessing for me?”
37 Isaac answered Esau, “I have made him lord over you and have made all his relatives his servants, and I have sustained him with grain and new wine.(OM) So what can I possibly do for you, my son?”
38 Esau said to his father, “Do you have only one blessing, my father? Bless me too, my father!” Then Esau wept aloud.(ON)
39 His father Isaac answered him,(OO)
“Your dwelling will be
away from the earth’s richness,
away from the dew(OP) of heaven above.(OQ)
40 You will live by the sword
and you will serve(OR) your brother.(OS)
But when you grow restless,
you will throw his yoke
from off your neck.(OT)”
41 Esau held a grudge(OU) against Jacob(OV) because of the blessing his father had given him. He said to himself, “The days of mourning(OW) for my father are near; then I will kill(OX) my brother Jacob.”(OY)
42 When Rebekah was told what her older son Esau(OZ) had said, she sent for her younger son Jacob and said to him, “Your brother Esau is planning to avenge himself by killing you.(PA) 43 Now then, my son, do what I say:(PB) Flee at once to my brother Laban(PC) in Harran.(PD) 44 Stay with him for a while(PE) until your brother’s fury subsides. 45 When your brother is no longer angry with you and forgets what you did to him,(PF) I’ll send word for you to come back from there.(PG) Why should I lose both of you in one day?”
46 Then Rebekah said to Isaac, “I’m disgusted with living because of these Hittite(PH) women. If Jacob takes a wife from among the women of this land,(PI) from Hittite women like these, my life will not be worth living.”(PJ)
28 So Isaac called for Jacob and blessed(PK) him. Then he commanded him: “Do not marry a Canaanite woman.(PL) 2 Go at once to Paddan Aram,[ac](PM) to the house of your mother’s father Bethuel.(PN) Take a wife for yourself there, from among the daughters of Laban, your mother’s brother.(PO) 3 May God Almighty[ad](PP) bless(PQ) you and make you fruitful(PR) and increase your numbers(PS) until you become a community of peoples. 4 May he give you and your descendants the blessing given to Abraham,(PT) so that you may take possession of the land(PU) where you now reside as a foreigner,(PV) the land God gave to Abraham.” 5 Then Isaac sent Jacob on his way,(PW) and he went to Paddan Aram,(PX) to Laban son of Bethuel the Aramean,(PY) the brother of Rebekah,(PZ) who was the mother of Jacob and Esau.
6 Now Esau learned that Isaac had blessed Jacob and had sent him to Paddan Aram to take a wife from there, and that when he blessed him he commanded him, “Do not marry a Canaanite woman,”(QA) 7 and that Jacob had obeyed his father and mother and had gone to Paddan Aram. 8 Esau then realized how displeasing the Canaanite women(QB) were to his father Isaac;(QC) 9 so he went to Ishmael(QD) and married Mahalath, the sister of Nebaioth(QE) and daughter of Ishmael son of Abraham, in addition to the wives he already had.(QF)
Jacob’s Dream at Bethel
10 Jacob left Beersheba(QG) and set out for Harran.(QH) 11 When he reached a certain place,(QI) he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head(QJ) and lay down to sleep. 12 He had a dream(QK) in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.(QL) 13 There above it[ae] stood the Lord,(QM) and he said: “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac.(QN) I will give you and your descendants the land(QO) on which you are lying.(QP) 14 Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you(QQ) will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south.(QR) All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring.[af](QS) 15 I am with you(QT) and will watch over you(QU) wherever you go,(QV) and I will bring you back to this land.(QW) I will not leave you(QX) until I have done what I have promised you.(QY)”(QZ)
16 When Jacob awoke from his sleep,(RA) he thought, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” 17 He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place!(RB) This is none other than the house of God;(RC) this is the gate of heaven.”
18 Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had placed under his head(RD) and set it up as a pillar(RE) and poured oil on top of it.(RF) 19 He called that place Bethel,[ag](RG) though the city used to be called Luz.(RH)
20 Then Jacob made a vow,(RI) saying, “If God will be with me and will watch over me(RJ) on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear(RK) 21 so that I return safely(RL) to my father’s household,(RM) then the Lord[ah] will be my God(RN) 22 and[ai] this stone that I have set up as a pillar(RO) will be God’s house,(RP) and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth.(RQ)”

3 And I will make thee swear by the Lord, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell:

15 And it came to pass, before he had done speaking, that, behold, Rebekah came out, who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother, with her pitcher upon her shoulder.
16 And the damsel was very fair to look upon, a virgin, neither had any man known her: and she went down to the well, and filled her pitcher, and came up.
17 And the servant ran to meet her, and said, Let me, I pray thee, drink a little water of thy pitcher.
18 And she said, Drink, my lord: and she hasted, and let down her pitcher upon her hand, and gave him drink.
19 And when she had done giving him drink, she said, I will draw water for thy camels also, until they have done drinking.
20 And she hasted, and emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran again unto the well to draw water, and drew for all his camels.

24 And she said unto him, I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, which she bare unto Nahor.
25 She said moreover unto him, We have both straw and provender enough, and room to lodge in.
26 And the man bowed down his head, and worshipped the Lord.
27 And he said, Blessed be the Lord God of my master Abraham, who hath not left destitute my master of his mercy and his truth: I being in the way, the Lord led me to the house of my master's brethren.

29 And Rebekah had a brother, and his name was Laban: and Laban ran out unto the man, unto the well.

47 And I asked her, and said, Whose daughter art thou? And she said, the daughter of Bethuel, Nahor's son, whom Milcah bare unto him: and I put the earring upon her face, and the bracelets upon her hands.
48 And I bowed down my head, and worshipped the Lord, and blessed the Lord God of my master Abraham, which had led me in the right way to take my master's brother's daughter unto his son.
49 And now if ye will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me: and if not, tell me; that I may turn to the right hand, or to the left.
50 Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, The thing proceedeth from the Lord: we cannot speak unto thee bad or good.
51 Behold, Rebekah is before thee, take her, and go, and let her be thy master's son's wife, as the Lord hath spoken.
52 And it came to pass, that, when Abraham's servant heard their words, he worshipped the Lord, bowing himself to the earth.
53 And the servant brought forth jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment, and gave them to Rebekah: he gave also to her brother and to her mother precious things.
54 And they did eat and drink, he and the men that were with him, and tarried all night; and they rose up in the morning, and he said, Send me away unto my master.
55 And her brother and her mother said, Let the damsel abide with us a few days, at the least ten; after that she shall go.
56 And he said unto them, Hinder me not, seeing the Lord hath prospered my way; send me away that I may go to my master.
57 And they said, We will call the damsel, and enquire at her mouth.
58 And they called Rebekah, and said unto her, Wilt thou go with this man? And she said, I will go.
59 And they sent away Rebekah their sister, and her nurse, and Abraham's servant, and his men.
60 And they blessed Rebekah, and said unto her, Thou art our sister, be thou the mother of thousands of millions, and let thy seed possess the gate of those which hate them.
61 And Rebekah arose, and her damsels, and they rode upon the camels, and followed the man: and the servant took Rebekah, and went his way.
62 And Isaac came from the way of the well Lahairoi; for he dwelt in the south country.
63 And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the eventide: and he lifted up his eyes, and saw, and, behold, the camels were coming.
64 And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she lighted off the camel.
65 For she had said unto the servant, What man is this that walketh in the field to meet us? And the servant had said, It is my master: therefore she took a vail, and covered herself.
66 And the servant told Isaac all things that he had done.
67 And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah's tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her: and Isaac was comforted after his mother's death.
25 Then again Abraham took a wife, and her name was Keturah.
2 And she bare him Zimran, and Jokshan, and Medan, and Midian, and Ishbak, and Shuah.
3 And Jokshan begat Sheba, and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim, and Letushim, and Leummim.
4 And the sons of Midian; Ephah, and Epher, and Hanoch, and Abidah, and Eldaah. All these were the children of Keturah.
5 And Abraham gave all that he had unto Isaac.
6 But unto the sons of the concubines, which Abraham had, Abraham gave gifts, and sent them away from Isaac his son, while he yet lived, eastward, unto the east country.
7 And these are the days of the years of Abraham's life which he lived, an hundred threescore and fifteen years.
8 Then Abraham gave up the ghost, and died in a good old age, an old man, and full of years; and was gathered to his people.
9 And his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, which is before Mamre;
10 The field which Abraham purchased of the sons of Heth: there was Abraham buried, and Sarah his wife.
11 And it came to pass after the death of Abraham, that God blessed his son Isaac; and Isaac dwelt by the well Lahairoi.
12 Now these are the generations of Ishmael, Abraham's son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah's handmaid, bare unto Abraham:
13 And these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, according to their generations: the firstborn of Ishmael, Nebajoth; and Kedar, and Adbeel, and Mibsam,
14 And Mishma, and Dumah, and Massa,
15 Hadar, and Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah:
16 These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names, by their towns, and by their castles; twelve princes according to their nations.
17 And these are the years of the life of Ishmael, an hundred and thirty and seven years: and he gave up the ghost and died; and was gathered unto his people.
18 And they dwelt from Havilah unto Shur, that is before Egypt, as thou goest toward Assyria: and he died in the presence of all his brethren.
19 And these are the generations of Isaac, Abraham's son: Abraham begat Isaac:
20 And Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah to wife, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Padanaram, the sister to Laban the Syrian.
21 And Isaac intreated the Lord for his wife, because she was barren: and the Lord was intreated of him, and Rebekah his wife conceived.
22 And the children struggled together within her; and she said, If it be so, why am I thus? And she went to enquire of the Lord.
23 And the Lord said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger.
24 And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.
25 And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Esau.
26 And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau's heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them.
27 And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents.
28 And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob.
29 And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint:
30 And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom.
31 And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright.
32 And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?
33 And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob.
34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.
26 And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the Philistines unto Gerar.
2 And the Lord appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of:
3 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father;
4 And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;
5 Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.
6 And Isaac dwelt in Gerar:
7 And the men of the place asked him of his wife; and he said, She is my sister: for he feared to say, She is my wife; lest, said he, the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah; because she was fair to look upon.
8 And it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was sporting with Rebekah his wife.
9 And Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Behold, of a surety she is thy wife; and how saidst thou, She is my sister? And Isaac said unto him, Because I said, Lest I die for her.
10 And Abimelech said, What is this thou hast done unto us? one of the people might lightly have lien with thy wife, and thou shouldest have brought guiltiness upon us.
11 And Abimelech charged all his people, saying, He that toucheth this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.
12 Then Isaac sowed in that land, and received in the same year an hundredfold: and the Lord blessed him.
13 And the man waxed great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great:
14 For he had possession of flocks, and possession of herds, and great store of servants: and the Philistines envied him.
15 For all the wells which his father's servants had digged in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped them, and filled them with earth.
16 And Abimelech said unto Isaac, Go from us; for thou art much mightier than we.
17 And Isaac departed thence, and pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there.
18 And Isaac digged again the wells of water, which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham: and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them.
19 And Isaac's servants digged in the valley, and found there a well of springing water.
20 And the herdmen of Gerar did strive with Isaac's herdmen, saying, The water is ours: and he called the name of the well Esek; because they strove with him.
21 And they digged another well, and strove for that also: and he called the name of it Sitnah.
22 And he removed from thence, and digged another well; and for that they strove not: and he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he said, For now the Lord hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.
23 And he went up from thence to Beersheba.
24 And the Lord appeared unto him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham's sake.
25 And he builded an altar there, and called upon the name of the Lord, and pitched his tent there: and there Isaac's servants digged a well.
26 Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar, and Ahuzzath one of his friends, and Phichol the chief captain of his army.
27 And Isaac said unto them, Wherefore come ye to me, seeing ye hate me, and have sent me away from you?
28 And they said, We saw certainly that the Lord was with thee: and we said, Let there be now an oath betwixt us, even betwixt us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee;
29 That thou wilt do us no hurt, as we have not touched thee, and as we have done unto thee nothing but good, and have sent thee away in peace: thou art now the blessed of the Lord.
30 And he made them a feast, and they did eat and drink.
31 And they rose up betimes in the morning, and sware one to another: and Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace.
32 And it came to pass the same day, that Isaac's servants came, and told him concerning the well which they had digged, and said unto him, We have found water.
33 And he called it Shebah: therefore the name of the city is Beersheba unto this day.
34 And Esau was forty years old when he took to wife Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Bashemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite:
35 Which were a grief of mind unto Isaac and to Rebekah.
27 And it came to pass, that when Isaac was old, and his eyes were dim, so that he could not see, he called Esau his eldest son, and said unto him, My son: and he said unto him, Behold, here am I.
2 And he said, Behold now, I am old, I know not the day of my death:
3 Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison;
4 And make me savoury meat, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat; that my soul may bless thee before I die.
5 And Rebekah heard when Isaac spake to Esau his son. And Esau went to the field to hunt for venison, and to bring it.
6 And Rebekah spake unto Jacob her son, saying, Behold, I heard thy father speak unto Esau thy brother, saying,
7 Bring me venison, and make me savoury meat, that I may eat, and bless thee before the Lord before my death.
8 Now therefore, my son, obey my voice according to that which I command thee.
9 Go now to the flock, and fetch me from thence two good kids of the goats; and I will make them savoury meat for thy father, such as he loveth:
10 And thou shalt bring it to thy father, that he may eat, and that he may bless thee before his death.
11 And Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, Behold, Esau my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man:
12 My father peradventure will feel me, and I shall seem to him as a deceiver; and I shall bring a curse upon me, and not a blessing.
13 And his mother said unto him, Upon me be thy curse, my son: only obey my voice, and go fetch me them.
14 And he went, and fetched, and brought them to his mother: and his mother made savoury meat, such as his father loved.
15 And Rebekah took goodly raiment of her eldest son Esau, which were with her in the house, and put them upon Jacob her younger son:
16 And she put the skins of the kids of the goats upon his hands, and upon the smooth of his neck:
17 And she gave the savoury meat and the bread, which she had prepared, into the hand of her son Jacob.
18 And he came unto his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I; who art thou, my son?
19 And Jacob said unto his father, I am Esau thy first born; I have done according as thou badest me: arise, I pray thee, sit and eat of my venison, that thy soul may bless me.
20 And Isaac said unto his son, How is it that thou hast found it so quickly, my son? And he said, Because the Lord thy God brought it to me.
21 And Isaac said unto Jacob, Come near, I pray thee, that I may feel thee, my son, whether thou be my very son Esau or not.
22 And Jacob went near unto Isaac his father; and he felt him, and said, The voice is Jacob's voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau.
23 And he discerned him not, because his hands were hairy, as his brother Esau's hands: so he blessed him.
24 And he said, Art thou my very son Esau? And he said, I am.
25 And he said, Bring it near to me, and I will eat of my son's venison, that my soul may bless thee. And he brought it near to him, and he did eat: and he brought him wine and he drank.
26 And his father Isaac said unto him, Come near now, and kiss me, my son.
27 And he came near, and kissed him: and he smelled the smell of his raiment, and blessed him, and said, See, the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which the Lord hath blessed:
28 Therefore God give thee of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine:
29 Let people serve thee, and nations bow down to thee: be lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother's sons bow down to thee: cursed be every one that curseth thee, and blessed be he that blesseth thee.
30 And it came to pass, as soon as Isaac had made an end of blessing Jacob, and Jacob was yet scarce gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, that Esau his brother came in from his hunting.
31 And he also had made savoury meat, and brought it unto his father, and said unto his father, Let my father arise, and eat of his son's venison, that thy soul may bless me.
32 And Isaac his father said unto him, Who art thou? And he said, I am thy son, thy firstborn Esau.
33 And Isaac trembled very exceedingly, and said, Who? where is he that hath taken venison, and brought it me, and I have eaten of all before thou camest, and have blessed him? yea, and he shall be blessed.
34 And when Esau heard the words of his father, he cried with a great and exceeding bitter cry, and said unto his father, Bless me, even me also, O my father.
35 And he said, Thy brother came with subtilty, and hath taken away thy blessing.
36 And he said, Is not he rightly named Jacob? for he hath supplanted me these two times: he took away my birthright; and, behold, now he hath taken away my blessing. And he said, Hast thou not reserved a blessing for me?
37 And Isaac answered and said unto Esau, Behold, I have made him thy lord, and all his brethren have I given to him for servants; and with corn and wine have I sustained him: and what shall I do now unto thee, my son?
38 And Esau said unto his father, Hast thou but one blessing, my father? bless me, even me also, O my father. And Esau lifted up his voice, and wept.
39 And Isaac his father answered and said unto him, Behold, thy dwelling shall be the fatness of the earth, and of the dew of heaven from above;
40 And by thy sword shalt thou live, and shalt serve thy brother; and it shall come to pass when thou shalt have the dominion, that thou shalt break his yoke from off thy neck.
41 And Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing wherewith his father blessed him: and Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then will I slay my brother Jacob.
42 And these words of Esau her elder son were told to Rebekah: and she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and said unto him, Behold, thy brother Esau, as touching thee, doth comfort himself, purposing to kill thee.
43 Now therefore, my son, obey my voice; arise, flee thou to Laban my brother to Haran;
44 And tarry with him a few days, until thy brother's fury turn away;
45 Until thy brother's anger turn away from thee, and he forget that which thou hast done to him: then I will send, and fetch thee from thence: why should I be deprived also of you both in one day?
46 And Rebekah said to Isaac, I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth: if Jacob take a wife of the daughters of Heth, such as these which are of the daughters of the land, what good shall my life do me?
28 And Isaac called Jacob, and blessed him, and charged him, and said unto him, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan.
2 Arise, go to Padanaram, to the house of Bethuel thy mother's father; and take thee a wife from thence of the daughers of Laban thy mother's brother.
3 And God Almighty bless thee, and make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, that thou mayest be a multitude of people;
4 And give thee the blessing of Abraham, to thee, and to thy seed with thee; that thou mayest inherit the land wherein thou art a stranger, which God gave unto Abraham.
5 And Isaac sent away Jacob: and he went to Padanaram unto Laban, son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob's and Esau's mother.
6 When Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob, and sent him away to Padanaram, to take him a wife from thence; and that as he blessed him he gave him a charge, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughers of Canaan;
7 And that Jacob obeyed his father and his mother, and was gone to Padanaram;
8 And Esau seeing that the daughters of Canaan pleased not Isaac his father;
9 Then went Esau unto Ishmael, and took unto the wives which he had Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael Abraham's son, the sister of Nebajoth, to be his wife.
10 And Jacob went out from Beersheba, and went toward Haran.
11 And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep.
12 And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.
13 And, behold, the Lord stood above it, and said, I am the Lord God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;
14 And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.
15 And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.
16 And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the Lord is in this place; and I knew it not.
17 And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful is this place! this is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.
18 And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put for his pillows, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it.
19 And he called the name of that place Bethel: but the name of that city was called Luz at the first.
20 And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,
21 So that I come again to my father's house in peace; then shall the Lord be my God:
22 And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God's house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.
