Na otoku Malti
28 Tek kad se spasismo, doznadosmo da se otok zove Malta. 2 Domoroci nam iskazivahu nesvakidašnju prijaznost. Zapalivši naime vatru, pozvaše nas sve, zbog kiše koja je padala i zbog studeni. 3 A Pavao prikupi naramak granja i stavi na vatru, kadli zbog vrućine izađe guja i pripije mu se za ruku. 4 A kad domoroci vidješe životinju gdje visi o njegovoj ruci, stadoše govoriti jedni drugima: »Zasigurno je ovaj čovjek ubojica kad mu, iako se spasio iz mora, Pravda ne dopušta živjeti.« 5 Ali on otrese životinju u vatru i ne bi mu ništa zlo. 6 Oni su pak očekivali da će oteći ili iznenada pasti mrtav; ali pošto su dugo čekali i vidjeli da mu se nikakvo zlo nije dogodilo, promijeniše mišljenje te stadoše govoriti da je bog.
7 A u okolici onoga mjesta bijaše imanje prvaka otoka, imenom Publija koji, prihvativši nas, tri nas dana ljubazno ugosti. 8 Publijev je otac ležao bolestan od ognjice i srdobolje. Pavao mu priđe i pomoli se, te položi na njega ruke i izliječi ga. 9 Nakon toga stadoše dolaziti i drugi koji su na otoku bili bolesni, te ozdravljahu. 10 Oni nam iskazaše mnoge počasti te su nas, kad isplovljavasmo, opskrbili potrepštinama.
Dolazak u Rim
11 Nakon tri mjeseca isplovismo na aleksandrijskoj lađi, sa znakom Dioskura, koja bijaše prezimila na otoku. 12 Doplovivši tad u Sirakuzu, ostadosmo tri dana. 13 Odande, popuštajući priveze, stigosmo u Regij, a kako je dan kasnije zapuhao južnjak, drugoga dana stigosmo u Puteole. 14 Ondje nađosmo braću koja su nas zamolila da ostanemo kod njih sedam dana. I tako dođosmo u Rim. 15 Kad tamošnja braća dočuše o nama, izađoše nam ususret sve do Apijeva trga i Triju gostionica. Ugledavši ih, Pavao izreče hvalu Bogu i ohrabri se. 16 A kad uđosmo u Rim, Pavlu bi dopušteno da stanuje zasebno s vojnikom koji ga je čuvao.
Pavlov susret sa Židovima u Rimu
17 Nakon tri dana sazva Pavao židovske prvake te im, kad se okupiše, stade govoriti: »Ja, braćo, ne učinih ništa protiv naroda ili otačkih običaja, a ipak me u Jeruzalemu kao sužnja predadoše u ruke Rimljanima. 18 Oni me nakon istrage htjedoše pustiti, jer nije na meni bilo nikakve krivnje zbog koje bih zaslužio smrt. 19 Ali kako se Židovi tome usprotiviše, bijah prisiljen prizvati se na cara, ne hoteći ičim optužiti svoj narod. 20 Zbog toga dakle razloga zamolih da vas vidim i da vam se obratim, jer sam zbog nade Izraelove vezan u ovim lancima.«
21 A oni mu rekoše: »Mi nikakva pisma o tebi nismo primili iz Judeje, niti je tko od braće došao nešto dojaviti ili loše govoriti o tebi. 22 Ali bismo htjeli od tebe čuti što misliš, jer o toj sljedbi znamo da se posvuda govori protiv nje.«
23 Nato dogovoriše dan i dođoše k njemu u stan u velikom broju. I on im je izlagao svjedočeći kraljevstvo Božje, uvjeravajući ih od jutra do večeri iz Mojsijeva Zakona i Proroka o Isusu. 24 I neki vjerovahu onome što je govorio, drugi pak ne vjerovahu. 25 Nesložni među sobom, stadoše se razilaziti, pošto im Pavao reče još ovu riječ: »Dobro Duh Sveti po Izaiji proroku vašim ocima progovori:
26 'Idi k tomu narodu i reci:
Slušat ćete i slušati, a nećete razumjeti, gledat ćete i gledati, a nećete vidjeti. 27 Jer otupjelo je srce ovog naroda; uši svoje začepiše, oči svoje zatvoriše; da svojim očima ne vide, da svojim ušima ne čuju i srcem ne razumiju - da se ne obrate te ih ne izliječim.'
28 Neka vam dakle bude znano da je ovo Božje spasenje poslano poganima. Oni će ga poslušati.« (29) [a]
Zaključak
30 Pavao pak ostade pune dvije godine u svom unajmljenom stanu gdje je primao sve koji su mu dolazili, 31 propovijedajući kraljevstvo Božje i poučavajući o Gospodinu Isusu Kristu sa svom smjelošću i bez zapreka.

28 (A) När vi väl var räddade fick vi veta att ön hette Malta.[a] 2 Lokalbefolkningen visade oss en ovanligt stor vänlighet. De tände en eld och tog hand om oss alla, eftersom det hade börjat regna och var kallt.
3 Paulus hade just samlat ett fång kvistar och lagt på elden när en huggorm kröp ut på grund av hettan och högg sig fast i hans hand. 4 När de infödda såg ormen hänga från hans hand, sade de till varandra: "Den där mannen är säkert en mördare. Trots att han blev räddad från havet lät inte Rättvisan[b] honom leva." 5 (B) Men Paulus skakade av sig ormen ner i elden och tog ingen skada. 6 (C) Folket väntade sig att han skulle svullna upp eller plötsligt falla ner död. När de väntat länge och sett att inget ovanligt hände honom, ändrade de sig och sade att han var en gud.
7 I trakten runt den platsen fanns det lantgårdar som tillhörde Publius, stormannen på ön. Han tog vänligt emot oss som sina gäster i tre dagar. 8 Publius far låg just då sjuk i feber och svår diarré[c]. Paulus gick in till honom, bad och lade händerna på honom och botade honom. 9 Efter den händelsen kom också andra sjuka på ön till honom och blev botade. 10 De visade oss sin uppskattning på många sätt, och när vi skulle segla försåg de oss med vad vi behövde.
Till Rom
11 Efter tre månader seglade vi ut med ett skepp som hade övervintrat vid ön. Det kom från Alexandria och hade Tvillingarna[d] som galjonsfigur. 12 Vi lade till vid Syrakusa och stannade där i tre dagar. 13 Därifrån följde vi kusten och kom till Regium. En dag senare fick vi sydlig vind, och den andra dagen kom vi till Puteoli. 14 Där fann vi bröder som bjöd in oss att stanna hos dem i sju dagar. Och så fortsatte vi till Rom.
Paulus i Rom
15 Bröderna där hade fått besked om oss, och de kom ut ända till Forum Appii och Tres Tabernae[e] för att möta oss. Då Paulus fick se dem tackade han Gud och fick nytt mod. 16 (D) När vi kom fram till Rom fick Paulus tillstånd att bo för sig själv tillsammans med den soldat som skulle bevaka honom.
17 (E) Tre dagar senare kallade han till sig de ledande bland judarna, och när de var samlade sade han till dem: "Bröder, jag har inte gjort något ont mot vårt folk eller våra fäderneärvda seder. Trots det blev jag fängslad i Jerusalem och utlämnad i romarnas händer. 18 (F) När de hade förhört mig ville de frige mig, eftersom jag inte var skyldig till något som förtjänade döden. 19 (G) Men judarna var emot det, och då var jag tvungen att vädja till kejsaren, dock utan att anklaga mitt folk. 20 (H) Så det är därför jag kallat hit er för att träffa er och tala med er. Det är nämligen för Israels hopp som jag bär dessa bojor."
21 De svarade honom: "Vi har inte fått något brev om dig från Judeen, och ingen av bröderna som kommit har berättat eller sagt något ont om dig. 22 (I) Men vi vill gärna höra från dig vad du tänker, för vi vet att den här sekten blir motsagd överallt."
23 (J) De bestämde en dag för honom, och då kom ännu fler till hans bostad. Från morgon till kväll förklarade han för dem och vittnade om Guds rike och försökte övertyga dem om Jesus utifrån både Mose lag och profeterna. 24 (K) Vissa lät sig övertygas av hans ord, men andra ville inte tro. 25 (L) När de inte kunde komma överens skildes de åt, efter att Paulus hade sagt detta enda ord: "Den helige Ande talade rätt genom profeten Jesaja till era fäder 26 (M) när han sade:[f]
Gå till detta folk och säg:
Ni ska höra men inte förstå,
och ni ska se men inte inse,
27 för detta folks hjärta är förhärdat.
De hör illa med sina öron
och sluter sina ögon,
så att de inte ser med ögonen
eller hör med öronen
eller förstår med hjärtat
och vänder om
så att jag får hela dem.
28 (N) Därför ska ni veta att denna Guds frälsning är sänd till hedningarna, och de kommer att lyssna."[g]
30 I två hela år[h] bodde Paulus i den bostad som han hade hyrt, och han tog emot alla som kom till honom. 31 Han predikade Guds rike och undervisade med stor frimodighet om Herren Jesus Kristus utan att bli hindrad.

Efter de två åren blev Paulus antingen ställd inför rätta och frikänd eller också kom målet aldrig upp. Ett mål inför kejsaren kunde nämligen avskrivas om det inte hade kommit upp till behandling inom två år. Efter de två åren i fångenskap gjorde Paulus enligt traditionen nya resor, först till Spanien och Kreta och därefter till Grekland där han skrev Titusbrevet och Första Timoteusbrevet. Till sist återvände han till Rom, där han skrev Andra Timoteusbrevet innan han led martyrdöden under kejsar Nero i mitten eller andra halvan av 60-talet e Kr.

Paul Ashore on Malta
28 Once safely on shore, we(A) found out that the island(B) was called Malta. 2 The islanders showed us unusual kindness. They built a fire and welcomed us all because it was raining and cold. 3 Paul gathered a pile of brushwood and, as he put it on the fire, a viper, driven out by the heat, fastened itself on his hand. 4 When the islanders saw the snake hanging from his hand,(C) they said to each other, “This man must be a murderer; for though he escaped from the sea, the goddess Justice has not allowed him to live.”(D) 5 But Paul shook the snake off into the fire and suffered no ill effects.(E) 6 The people expected him to swell up or suddenly fall dead; but after waiting a long time and seeing nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god.(F)
7 There was an estate nearby that belonged to Publius, the chief official of the island. He welcomed us to his home and showed us generous hospitality for three days. 8 His father was sick in bed, suffering from fever and dysentery. Paul went in to see him and, after prayer,(G) placed his hands on him(H) and healed him.(I) 9 When this had happened, the rest of the sick on the island came and were cured. 10 They honored us(J) in many ways; and when we were ready to sail, they furnished us with the supplies we needed.
Paul’s Arrival at Rome
11 After three months we put out to sea in a ship that had wintered in the island—it was an Alexandrian ship(K) with the figurehead of the twin gods Castor and Pollux. 12 We put in at Syracuse and stayed there three days. 13 From there we set sail and arrived at Rhegium. The next day the south wind came up, and on the following day we reached Puteoli. 14 There we found some brothers and sisters(L) who invited us to spend a week with them. And so we came to Rome. 15 The brothers and sisters(M) there had heard that we were coming, and they traveled as far as the Forum of Appius and the Three Taverns to meet us. At the sight of these people Paul thanked God and was encouraged. 16 When we got to Rome, Paul was allowed to live by himself, with a soldier to guard him.(N)
Paul Preaches at Rome Under Guard
17 Three days later he called together the local Jewish leaders.(O) When they had assembled, Paul said to them: “My brothers,(P) although I have done nothing against our people(Q) or against the customs of our ancestors,(R) I was arrested in Jerusalem and handed over to the Romans. 18 They examined me(S) and wanted to release me,(T) because I was not guilty of any crime deserving death.(U) 19 The Jews objected, so I was compelled to make an appeal to Caesar.(V) I certainly did not intend to bring any charge against my own people. 20 For this reason I have asked to see you and talk with you. It is because of the hope of Israel(W) that I am bound with this chain.”(X)
21 They replied, “We have not received any letters from Judea concerning you, and none of our people(Y) who have come from there has reported or said anything bad about you. 22 But we want to hear what your views are, for we know that people everywhere are talking against this sect.”(Z)
23 They arranged to meet Paul on a certain day, and came in even larger numbers to the place where he was staying. He witnessed to them from morning till evening, explaining about the kingdom of God,(AA) and from the Law of Moses and from the Prophets(AB) he tried to persuade them about Jesus.(AC) 24 Some were convinced by what he said, but others would not believe.(AD) 25 They disagreed among themselves and began to leave after Paul had made this final statement: “The Holy Spirit spoke the truth to your ancestors when he said(AE) through Isaiah the prophet:
26 “‘Go to this people and say,
“You will be ever hearing but never understanding;
you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.”
27 For this people’s heart has become calloused;(AF)
they hardly hear with their ears,
and they have closed their eyes.
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
hear with their ears,
understand with their hearts
and turn, and I would heal them.’[a](AG)
28 “Therefore I want you to know that God’s salvation(AH) has been sent to the Gentiles,(AI) and they will listen!” [29] [b]
30 For two whole years Paul stayed there in his own rented house and welcomed all who came to see him. 31 He proclaimed the kingdom of God(AJ) and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ—with all boldness(AK) and without hindrance!

2 And the barbarous people shewed us no little kindness: for they kindled a fire, and received us every one, because of the present rain, and because of the cold.
3 And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, and laid them on the fire, there came a viper out of the heat, and fastened on his hand.
4 And when the barbarians saw the venomous beast hang on his hand, they said among themselves, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped the sea, yet vengeance suffereth not to live.
5 And he shook off the beast into the fire, and felt no harm.
6 Howbeit they looked when he should have swollen, or fallen down dead suddenly: but after they had looked a great while, and saw no harm come to him, they changed their minds, and said that he was a god.
7 In the same quarters were possessions of the chief man of the island, whose name was Publius; who received us, and lodged us three days courteously.
8 And it came to pass, that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of a bloody flux: to whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laid his hands on him, and healed him.
9 So when this was done, others also, which had diseases in the island, came, and were healed:
10 Who also honoured us with many honours; and when we departed, they laded us with such things as were necessary.
11 And after three months we departed in a ship of Alexandria, which had wintered in the isle, whose sign was Castor and Pollux.
12 And landing at Syracuse, we tarried there three days.
13 And from thence we fetched a compass, and came to Rhegium: and after one day the south wind blew, and we came the next day to Puteoli:
14 Where we found brethren, and were desired to tarry with them seven days: and so we went toward Rome.
15 And from thence, when the brethren heard of us, they came to meet us as far as Appii forum, and The three taverns: whom when Paul saw, he thanked God, and took courage.
16 And when we came to Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard: but Paul was suffered to dwell by himself with a soldier that kept him.
17 And it came to pass, that after three days Paul called the chief of the Jews together: and when they were come together, he said unto them, Men and brethren, though I have committed nothing against the people, or customs of our fathers, yet was I delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.
18 Who, when they had examined me, would have let me go, because there was no cause of death in me.
19 But when the Jews spake against it, I was constrained to appeal unto Caesar; not that I had ought to accuse my nation of.
20 For this cause therefore have I called for you, to see you, and to speak with you: because that for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.
21 And they said unto him, We neither received letters out of Judaea concerning thee, neither any of the brethren that came shewed or spake any harm of thee.
22 But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest: for as concerning this sect, we know that every where it is spoken against.
23 And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening.
24 And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not.
25 And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers,
26 Saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive:
27 For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.
28 Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles, and that they will hear it.
29 And when he had said these words, the Jews departed, and had great reasoning among themselves.
30 And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house, and received all that came in unto him,
31 Preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man forbidding him.
