The Holy Spirit Comes
2 On the day of Pentecost[a] all the believers were meeting together in one place. 2 Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. 3 Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. 4 And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages,[b] as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.
5 At that time there were devout Jews from every nation living in Jerusalem. 6 When they heard the loud noise, everyone came running, and they were bewildered to hear their own languages being spoken by the believers.
7 They were completely amazed. “How can this be?” they exclaimed. “These people are all from Galilee, 8 and yet we hear them speaking in our own native languages! 9 Here we are—Parthians, Medes, Elamites, people from Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, the province of Asia, 10 Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, and the areas of Libya around Cyrene, visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism), Cretans, and Arabs. And we all hear these people speaking in our own languages about the wonderful things God has done!” 12 They stood there amazed and perplexed. “What can this mean?” they asked each other.
13 But others in the crowd ridiculed them, saying, “They’re just drunk, that’s all!”
Peter Preaches to the Crowd
14 Then Peter stepped forward with the eleven other apostles and shouted to the crowd, “Listen carefully, all of you, fellow Jews and residents of Jerusalem! Make no mistake about this. 15 These people are not drunk, as some of you are assuming. Nine o’clock in the morning is much too early for that. 16 No, what you see was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel:
17 ‘In the last days,’ God says,
‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy.
Your young men will see visions,
and your old men will dream dreams.
18 In those days I will pour out my Spirit
even on my servants—men and women alike—
and they will prophesy.
19 And I will cause wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below—
blood and fire and clouds of smoke.
20 The sun will become dark,
and the moon will turn blood red
before that great and glorious day of the Lord arrives.
21 But everyone who calls on the name of the Lord
will be saved.’[c]
22 “People of Israel, listen! God publicly endorsed Jesus the Nazarene[d] by doing powerful miracles, wonders, and signs through him, as you well know. 23 But God knew what would happen, and his prearranged plan was carried out when Jesus was betrayed. With the help of lawless Gentiles, you nailed him to a cross and killed him. 24 But God released him from the horrors of death and raised him back to life, for death could not keep him in its grip. 25 King David said this about him:
‘I see that the Lord is always with me.
I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me.
26 No wonder my heart is glad,
and my tongue shouts his praises!
My body rests in hope.
27 For you will not leave my soul among the dead[e]
or allow your Holy One to rot in the grave.
28 You have shown me the way of life,
and you will fill me with the joy of your presence.’[f]
29 “Dear brothers, think about this! You can be sure that the patriarch David wasn’t referring to himself, for he died and was buried, and his tomb is still here among us. 30 But he was a prophet, and he knew God had promised with an oath that one of David’s own descendants would sit on his throne. 31 David was looking into the future and speaking of the Messiah’s resurrection. He was saying that God would not leave him among the dead or allow his body to rot in the grave.
32 “God raised Jesus from the dead, and we are all witnesses of this. 33 Now he is exalted to the place of highest honor in heaven, at God’s right hand. And the Father, as he had promised, gave him the Holy Spirit to pour out upon us, just as you see and hear today. 34 For David himself never ascended into heaven, yet he said,
‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit in the place of honor at my right hand
35 until I humble your enemies,
making them a footstool under your feet.”’[g]
36 “So let everyone in Israel know for certain that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, to be both Lord and Messiah!”
37 Peter’s words pierced their hearts, and they said to him and to the other apostles, “Brothers, what should we do?”
38 Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 This promise is to you, to your children, and to those far away[h]—all who have been called by the Lord our God.” 40 Then Peter continued preaching for a long time, strongly urging all his listeners, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation!”
41 Those who believed what Peter said were baptized and added to the church that day—about 3,000 in all.
The Believers Form a Community
42 All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper[i]), and to prayer.
43 A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. 44 And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. 45 They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. 46 They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity[j]— 47 all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.

Venida del Espíritu Santo
2 Al llegar el día de Pentecostés continuaban todos reunidos en el mismo sitio. 2 De pronto, un estruendo que procedía del cielo y avanzaba como un huracán invadió la casa en que estaban congregados. 3 Vieron luego una especie de lenguas de fuego que se repartían y se posaban sobre cada uno de ellos. 4 El Espíritu Santo los llenó a todos, y en seguida se pusieron a hablar en distintos idiomas según el Espíritu Santo les concedía expresarse.
5 Se hallaban entonces hospedados en Jerusalén judíos devotos llegados de todas las regiones de la tierra, los cuales, 6 al oír el estruendo, acudieron en masa y quedaron perplejos, pues cada uno oía hablar a los apóstoles en su idioma nativo. 7 Tan estupefactos y maravillados estaban, que decían:
— ¿No son galileos todos los que están hablando? 8 ¿Cómo es que cada uno de nosotros los oímos expresarse en nuestro propio idioma nativo? 9 Entre nosotros hay partos, medos y elamitas; los hay que residen en Mesopotamia, en Judea y Capadocia, en el Ponto, en la provincia de Asia, 10 en Frigia y en Panfilia, en Egipto y en la región de Libia que limita con Cirene; hay visitantes romanos, 11 hay judíos y prosélitos, cretenses y árabes. Pues bien, todos y cada uno los oímos referir en nuestro propio idioma, las cosas portentosas de Dios.
12 Así que, llenos de estupefacción, se decían unos a otros con asombro:
— ¿Qué significa esto?
13 Otros, en cambio, se burlaban y decían que estaban borrachos.
Discurso de Pedro
14 Pedro entonces tomó la palabra y, en nombre propio y de sus once compañeros, les habló de esta manera:
— Judíos y todos los que residen en Jerusalén, presten atención a mis palabras a ver si les queda claro lo siguiente: 15 Estos no están borrachos como ustedes suponen pues sólo son las nueve de la mañana. 16 Lo que sucede es que se está cumpliendo lo anunciado por el profeta Joel:
17 En los últimos días, dice Dios,
concederé mi Espíritu a todo mortal:
los hijos y las hijas de ustedes
hablarán inspirados por mí;
sus jóvenes tendrán revelaciones
y sus ancianos
soñarán cosas extraordinarias.
18 A los que me sirven,
tanto hombres como mujeres,
otorgaré en aquellos días mi Espíritu,
y hablarán inspirados por mí.
19 Haré prodigios en el cielo
y milagros en la tierra:
sangre, fuego y vapor humeante.
20 Antes que llegue el día del Señor,
grande y glorioso,
el sol se convertirá en tinieblas
y la luna en sangre.
21 Y todo el que invoque al Señor,
obtendrá la salvación.
22 Escuchen esto, israelitas: Jesús de Nazaret fue el hombre a quien Dios avaló ante ustedes con los milagros, prodigios y señales que, como bien saben, Dios realizó entre ustedes a través de Jesús. 23 Dios lo entregó conforme a un plan proyectado y conocido de antemano, y ustedes, valiéndose de no creyentes, lo clavaron en una cruz y lo mataron. 24 Pero Dios lo ha resucitado, librándolo de las garras de la muerte. Y es que no era posible que la muerte dominase a aquel 25 a quien se refiere David cuando dice:
Sentía constantemente
al Señor junto a mí,
ya que está a mi lado
para impedir que caiga.
26 Por eso se alegra mi corazón,
canta gozosa mi lengua
y hasta mi cuerpo rebosa de esperanza.
27 Porque no me abandonarás al poder del abismo
ni permitirás que tu elegido se corrompa.
28 Me has enseñado el camino que conduce a la vida

29 Hermanos, voy a hablarles con franqueza: a nadie se le oculta que nuestro antepasado David murió y fue enterrado; es más, su tumba se conserva todavía entre nosotros. 30 Pero como era profeta y sabía que Dios le había prometido solemnemente que un descendiente de su misma sangre había de sucederle en el trono, 31 previó la resurrección del Mesías cuando anunció que ni lo abandonaría al poder del abismo ni su cuerpo se corrompería. 32 Pues bien, a este, que es Jesús, Dios lo ha resucitado, y todos nosotros somos testigos de ello. 33 El poder de Dios lo ha exaltado y él, habiendo recibido del Padre el Espíritu Santo prometido, lo ha repartido en abundancia, como ustedes están viendo y oyendo. 34 David no ascendió al cielo; sin embargo, dice:
Dijo el Señor a mi Señor:
“Siéntate a mi derecha
35 hasta que yo ponga a tus enemigos
por estrado de tus pies”.
36 Por consiguiente, sepa con seguridad todo Israel que Dios ha constituido Señor y Mesías a este mismo Jesús a quien ustedes han crucificado.
Los primeros convertidos
37 Estas palabras les llegaron hasta el fondo del corazón; así que dijeron a Pedro y a los demás apóstoles:
— ¿Qué debemos hacer, hermanos?
38 Pedro les contestó:
— Conviértanse y que cada uno de ustedes se bautice en el nombre de Jesucristo, a fin de obtener el perdón de sus pecados. Entonces recibirán, como don de Dios, el Espíritu Santo. 39 Porque la promesa les corresponde a ustedes y a sus hijos, e incluso a todos los extranjeros que reciban la llamada del Señor, nuestro Dios.
40 Con estas y otras muchas razones los instaba y animaba, diciendo:
— Pónganse a salvo de este mundo corrupto.
41 Los que aceptaron con agrado la invitación se bautizaron, y aquel día se unieron a los apóstoles alrededor de tres mil personas.
Vida de la primera comunidad cristiana
42 Todos se mantenían constantes a la hora de escuchar la enseñanza de los apóstoles, de compartir lo que tenían, de partir el pan* y de participar en la oración. 43 Todo el mundo estaba impresionado a la vista de los numerosos prodigios y señales realizados por los apóstoles. 44 En cuanto a los creyentes, vivían todos de mutuo acuerdo y todo lo compartían. 45 Hasta vendían las propiedades y bienes, y repartían el dinero entre todos según la necesidad de cada cual. 46 A diario acudían al Templo con constancia y en íntima armonía, en familia partían el pan y compartían juntos el alimento con sencillez y alegría sinceras. 47 Alababan a Dios, y toda la gente los miraba con simpatía. Por su parte, el Señor aumentaba cada día el grupo de los que estaban en camino de salvación.

The Coming of the Holy Spirit
2 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a noise came from heaven. It sounded like a strong wind blowing. This noise filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw something that looked like flames of fire. The flames were separated and stood over each person there. 4 They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they began to speak different languages. The Holy Spirit was giving them the power to do this.
5 There were some godly Jews in Jerusalem at this time. They were from every country in the world. 6 A large crowd came together because they heard the noise. They were surprised because, as the apostles were speaking, everyone heard in their own language.
7 They were all amazed at this. They did not understand how the apostles could do this. They said, “Look! These men we hear speaking are all from Galilee.[a] 8 But we hear them in our own languages. How is this possible? We are from all these different places: 9 Parthia, Media, Elam, Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, Asia, 10 Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, the areas of Libya near the city of Cyrene, Rome, 11 Crete, and Arabia. Some of us were born Jews, and others have changed their religion to worship God like Jews. We are from these different countries, but we can hear these men in our own languages! We can all understand the great things they are saying about God.”
12 The people were all amazed and confused. They asked each other, “What is happening?” 13 But others were laughing at the apostles, saying they were drunk from too much wine.
Peter Speaks to the People
14 Then Peter stood up with the other eleven apostles. He spoke loudly so that all the people could hear. He said, “My Jewish brothers and all of you who live in Jerusalem, listen to me. I will tell you something you need to know. Listen carefully. 15 These men are not drunk as you think; it’s only nine o’clock in the morning. 16 But Joel the prophet wrote about what you see happening here today. This is what he wrote:
17 ‘God says: In the last days
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy.
Your young men will see visions.
Your old men will have special dreams.
18 In those days I will pour out my Spirit
on my servants, men and women,
and they will prophesy.
19 I will work wonders in the sky above.
I will cause miraculous signs on the earth below.
There will be blood, fire, and thick smoke.
20 The sun will be changed into darkness,
and the moon will be as red as blood.
Then the great and glorious day of the Lord will come.
21 And everyone who trusts in the Lord[b] will be saved.’ (A)
22 “My fellow Israelites, listen to these words: Jesus from Nazareth was a very special man. God clearly showed this to you. He proved it by the miracles, wonders, and miraculous signs he did through Jesus. You all saw these things, so you know this is true. 23 Jesus was handed over to you, and you killed him. With the help of evil men, you nailed him to a cross. But God knew all this would happen. It was his plan—a plan he made long ago. 24 Jesus suffered the pain of death, but God made him free. He raised him from death. There was no way for death to hold him. 25 David said this about him:
‘I saw the Lord before me always;
he is at my right side to keep me safe.
26 So my heart is happy,
and the words I speak are words of joy.
Yes, even my body will live with hope,
27 because you will not leave me in the place of death.[c]
You will not let the body of your Holy One rot in the grave.
28 You taught me how to live.
You will come close to me and give me great joy.’ (B)
29 “My brothers, I can tell you for sure about David, our great ancestor. He died, was buried, and his tomb is still here with us today. 30 He was a prophet and knew something that God had said. God had promised David that someone from his own family would sit on David’s throne as king.[d] 31 David knew this before it happened. That is why he said this about that future king:
‘He was not left in the place of death.
His body did not rot in the grave.’
David was talking about the Messiah rising from death. 32 So Jesus is the one God raised from death. We are all witnesses of this. We saw him. 33 Jesus was lifted up to heaven. Now he is with God, at God’s right side. The Father has given the Holy Spirit to him, as he promised. So Jesus has now poured out that Spirit. This is what you see and hear. 34 David was not the one who was lifted up to heaven. David himself said,
‘The Lord God said to my Lord:
Sit at my right side,
35 until I put your enemies under your power.[e]’ (C)
36 “So, all the people of Israel should know this for certain: God has made Jesus to be Lord and Messiah. He is the man you nailed to the cross!”
37 When the people heard this, they felt very, very sorry. They asked Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what should we do?”
38 Peter said to them, “Change your hearts and lives and be baptized, each one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ. Then God will forgive your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 This promise is for you. It is also for your children and for the people who are far away. It is for everyone the Lord our God calls to himself.”
40 Peter warned them with many other words; he begged them, “Save yourselves from the evil of the people who live now!” 41 Then those who accepted what Peter said were baptized. On that day about 3000 people were added to the group of believers.
The Believers Share
42 The believers spent their time listening to the teaching of the apostles. They shared everything with each other. They ate[f] together and prayed together. 43 Many wonders and miraculous signs were happening through the apostles, and everyone felt great respect for God. 44 All the believers stayed together and shared everything. 45 They sold their land and the things they owned. Then they divided the money and gave it to those who needed it. 46 The believers shared a common purpose, and every day they spent much of their time together in the Temple area. They also ate together in their homes. They were happy to share their food and ate with joyful hearts. 47 The believers praised God and were respected by all the people. More and more people were being saved every day, and the Lord was adding them to their group.
