12 Помни Создателя твоего, пока ты молод, до того как старость придёт, когда скажешь: «Без пользы я жизнь прожил»[a].
2 Помни Создателя твоего, пока ты молод и не наступили времена, когда солнце, луна и звёзды потемнеют в твоих глазах и беды одна за одной словно волны нахлынут.
3 Руки твои потеряют силу, ноги ослабеют, а глаза не будут видеть зорко, выпадут зубы, и ты не сможешь есть свой хлеб. 4 Ты будешь плохо слышать и не различишь шума на улице, даже звук жёрнова, мелющего твоё зерно, покажется тебе тихим. Ты не сможешь услышать женское пение, но пение птицы поднимет тебя рано утром, потому что ты не сможешь спать.
5 Тебя будет страшить высота, ты будешь бояться споткнуться, идя по дороге. Твои волосы побелеют и станут подобны цветам миндального дерева, ты будешь ползти как кузнечик, также утратишь желание[b] жить, а потом уйдёшь в свой вечный дом. Оплакивающие тебя соберутся на улице и понесут тебя на кладбище.
Смерть
6 Не забывай, пока молод, о Создателе,
пока серебряные узы не порвутся
и чаша золотая не разобьётся и не станет
словно у источника разбитый вдребезги кувшин
или разбитая крышка колодца.
7 И тело возвратится в прах земной,
откуда и пришло оно,
а дух твой, пришедший от Бога,
после смерти обратно к Богу возвратится.
8 Всё бессмысленно. Учитель говорит, что всё это пустая трата времени![c]
Заключение
9 Учитель был мудр и с помощью мудрости старался учить людей. Учитель был внимателен в своих испытаниях и составил[d] много мудрых поучений. 10 Он старался находить верные слова и написал поучения, которые истинны и благонадёжны.
11 Слова мудрого человека как заострённые прутья, которыми люди погоняют животных. Поучения его, записанные на бумаге, будут направлять людей на путь истинный, словно овец направляет пастуший посох. 12 Ещё одно предупреждение, сын мой! Изучай эти притчи, но будь осторожен с другими учениями. Люди всё время пишут книги, и чтение многих книг утомит тебя.
13-14 В чём же мораль этой книги?[e] Мораль состоит в том, что самое главное для людей—почитать Бога и подчиняться Его повелениям, потому что Бог знает всё, что делают люди, даже их тайные дела. Он знает обо всём добром и обо всём злом, и поэтому Он осудит людей согласно их поступкам.

Advice to the Young: Life is Short and Then You Die
12 Remember your Creator in the days of your youth—
before the days of trouble come
and the years draw near when you will say,
“I find no pleasure in them!”
2 Before the sun, the light, the moon, and the stars darken
and the clouds return after the rain.
3 When the guards of the house tremble,
and the men of strength are bent;
the grinders cease because they are few,
and those looking through the windows see dimly.
4 When the doors on the street are shut,
when the sound of the grinding mill is low;
one rises up to the sound of the bird,
and all the daughters of song are brought low.
5 They are afraid of heights,
and terrors are on the road.
The almond tree blossoms,
and the grasshopper draws itself along, and desire fails
because man goes to his eternal home,
and the mourners go about in the streets.
6 Before the silver cord is snapped
and the golden bowl is broken;
and the jar at the foundation is broken,
and the wheel at the cistern is broken.
7 And the dust returns to the earth as it was,
and the breath returns to God who gave it.
Motto Restated
8 “Vanity of vanity!” says the Teacher.[a]
“Everything is vanity!”
Epilogue
9 The Teacher[b] was full of wisdom, and he taught the people with knowledge. He carefully considered many proverbs and carefully arranged them. 10 The Teacher[c] sought to find delightful words,[d] and he wrote[e] what is upright—truthful words.
11 The words of the wise are like cattle goads; the collections of the sages are like pricks inflicted by one shepherd.[f] 12 My son, be careful about anything beyond these things.[g] For the writing of books is endless, and too much study is wearisome.[h]
13 Now that all has been heard, here is the final conclusion:
Fear God and obey his commandments,
for this is the whole duty of man.
14 For God will bring every deed into judgment,
including every secret thing, whether good or evil.

12 Remember(A) your Creator
in the days of your youth,

“I find no pleasure in them”—
2 before the sun and the light
and the moon and the stars grow dark,
and the clouds return after the rain;
3 when the keepers of the house tremble,
and the strong men stoop,
when the grinders cease because they are few,
and those looking through the windows grow dim;
4 when the doors to the street are closed
and the sound of grinding fades;
when people rise up at the sound of birds,
but all their songs grow faint;(C)
5 when people are afraid of heights
and of dangers in the streets;
when the almond tree blossoms
and the grasshopper drags itself along
and desire no longer is stirred.
Then people go to their eternal home(D)
and mourners(E) go about the streets.
6 Remember him—before the silver cord is severed,
and the golden bowl is broken;
before the pitcher is shattered at the spring,
and the wheel broken at the well,
7 and the dust returns(F) to the ground it came from,
and the spirit returns to God(G) who gave it.(H)
The Conclusion of the Matter
9 Not only was the Teacher wise, but he also imparted knowledge to the people. He pondered and searched out and set in order many proverbs.(K) 10 The Teacher(L) searched to find just the right words, and what he wrote was upright and true.(M)
11 The words of the wise are like goads, their collected sayings like firmly embedded nails(N)—given by one shepherd.[b] 12 Be warned, my son, of anything in addition to them.
Of making many books there is no end, and much study wearies the body.(O)
