11 και εγενετο εν τω ειναι αυτον εν τοπω τινι προσευχομενον ως επαυσατο ειπεν τις των μαθητων αυτου προς αυτον κυριε διδαξον ημας προσευχεσθαι καθως και ιωαννης εδιδαξεν τους μαθητας αυτου
2 ειπεν δε αυτοις οταν προσευχησθε λεγετε πατερ αγιασθητω το ονομα σου ελθετω η βασιλεια σου
3 τον αρτον ημων τον επιουσιον διδου ημιν το καθ ημεραν
4 και αφες ημιν τας αμαρτιας ημων και γαρ αυτοι αφιομεν παντι οφειλοντι ημιν και μη εισενεγκης ημας εις πειρασμον
5 και ειπεν προς αυτους τις εξ υμων εξει φιλον και πορευσεται προς αυτον μεσονυκτιου και ειπη αυτω φιλε χρησον μοι τρεις αρτους
6 επειδη φιλος μου παρεγενετο εξ οδου προς με και ουκ εχω ο παραθησω αυτω
7 κακεινος εσωθεν αποκριθεις ειπη μη μοι κοπους παρεχε ηδη η θυρα κεκλεισται και τα παιδια μου μετ εμου εις την κοιτην εισιν ου δυναμαι αναστας δουναι σοι
8 λεγω υμιν ει και ου δωσει αυτω αναστας δια το ειναι φιλον αυτου δια γε την αναιδειαν αυτου εγερθεις δωσει αυτω οσων χρηζει
9 καγω υμιν λεγω αιτειτε και δοθησεται υμιν ζητειτε και ευρησετε κρουετε και ανοιγησεται υμιν
10 πας γαρ ο αιτων λαμβανει και ο ζητων ευρισκει και τω κρουοντι ανοιγησεται
11 τινα δε εξ υμων τον πατερα αιτησει ο υιος ιχθυν μη αντι ιχθυος οφιν αυτω επιδωσει
12 η και αιτησει ωον επιδωσει αυτω σκορπιον
13 ει ουν υμεις πονηροι υπαρχοντες οιδατε δοματα αγαθα διδοναι τοις τεκνοις υμων ποσω μαλλον ο πατηρ [ο] εξ ουρανου δωσει πνευμα αγιον τοις αιτουσιν αυτον
14 και ην εκβαλλων δαιμονιον κωφον εγενετο δε του δαιμονιου εξελθοντος ελαλησεν ο κωφος και εθαυμασαν οι οχλοι
15 τινες δε εξ αυτων ειπον εν βεελζεβουλ τω αρχοντι των δαιμονιων εκβαλλει τα δαιμονια
16 ετεροι δε πειραζοντες σημειον εξ ουρανου εζητουν παρ αυτου
17 αυτος δε ειδως αυτων τα διανοηματα ειπεν αυτοις πασα βασιλεια εφ εαυτην διαμερισθεισα ερημουται και οικος επι οικον πιπτει
18 ει δε και ο σατανας εφ εαυτον διεμερισθη πως σταθησεται η βασιλεια αυτου οτι λεγετε εν βεελζεβουλ εκβαλλειν με τα δαιμονια
19 ει δε εγω εν βεελζεβουλ εκβαλλω τα δαιμονια οι υιοι υμων εν τινι εκβαλλουσιν δια τουτο αυτοι υμων κριται εσονται
20 ει δε εν δακτυλω θεου [εγω] εκβαλλω τα δαιμονια αρα εφθασεν εφ υμας η βασιλεια του θεου
21 οταν ο ισχυρος καθωπλισμενος φυλασση την εαυτου αυλην εν ειρηνη εστιν τα υπαρχοντα αυτου
22 επαν δε ισχυροτερος αυτου επελθων νικηση αυτον την πανοπλιαν αυτου αιρει εφ η επεποιθει και τα σκυλα αυτου διαδιδωσιν
23 ο μη ων μετ εμου κατ εμου εστιν και ο μη συναγων μετ εμου σκορπιζει
24 οταν το ακαθαρτον πνευμα εξελθη απο του ανθρωπου διερχεται δι ανυδρων τοπων ζητουν αναπαυσιν και μη ευρισκον [τοτε] λεγει υποστρεψω εις τον οικον μου οθεν εξηλθον
25 και ελθον ευρισκει [σχολαζοντα] σεσαρωμενον και κεκοσμημενον
26 τοτε πορευεται και παραλαμβανει ετερα πνευματα πονηροτερα εαυτου επτα και εισελθοντα κατοικει εκει και γινεται τα εσχατα του ανθρωπου εκεινου χειρονα των πρωτων
27 εγενετο δε εν τω λεγειν αυτον ταυτα επαρασα τις φωνην γυνη εκ του οχλου ειπεν αυτω μακαρια η κοιλια η βαστασασα σε και μαστοι ους εθηλασας
28 αυτος δε ειπεν μενουν μακαριοι οι ακουοντες τον λογον του θεου και φυλασσοντες
29 των δε οχλων επαθροιζομενων ηρξατο λεγειν η γενεα αυτη γενεα πονηρα εστιν σημειον ζητει και σημειον ου δοθησεται αυτη ει μη το σημειον ιωνα
30 καθως γαρ εγενετο [ο] ιωνας τοις νινευιταις σημειον ουτως εσται και ο υιος του ανθρωπου τη γενεα ταυτη
31 βασιλισσα νοτου εγερθησεται εν τη κρισει μετα των ανδρων της γενεας ταυτης και κατακρινει αυτους οτι ηλθεν εκ των περατων της γης ακουσαι την σοφιαν σολομωνος και ιδου πλειον σολομωνος ωδε
32 ανδρες νινευιται αναστησονται εν τη κρισει μετα της γενεας ταυτης και κατακρινουσιν αυτην οτι μετενοησαν εις το κηρυγμα ιωνα και ιδου πλειον ιωνα ωδε
33 ουδεις λυχνον αψας εις κρυπτην τιθησιν ουδε υπο τον μοδιον αλλ επι την λυχνιαν ινα οι εισπορευομενοι το φως βλεπωσιν
34 ο λυχνος του σωματος εστιν ο οφθαλμος σου οταν ο οφθαλμος σου απλους η και ολον το σωμα σου φωτεινον εστιν επαν δε πονηρος η και το σωμα σου σκοτεινον
35 σκοπει ουν μη το φως το εν σοι σκοτος εστιν
36 ει ουν το σωμα σου ολον φωτεινον μη εχον μερος τι σκοτεινον εσται φωτεινον ολον ως οταν ο λυχνος τη αστραπη φωτιζη σε
37 εν δε τω λαλησαι ερωτα αυτον φαρισαιος οπως αριστηση παρ αυτω εισελθων δε ανεπεσεν
38 ο δε φαρισαιος ιδων εθαυμασεν οτι ου πρωτον εβαπτισθη προ του αριστου
39 ειπεν δε ο κυριος προς αυτον νυν υμεις οι φαρισαιοι το εξωθεν του ποτηριου και του πινακος καθαριζετε το δε εσωθεν υμων γεμει αρπαγης και πονηριας
40 αφρονες ουχ ο ποιησας το εξωθεν και το εσωθεν εποιησεν
41 πλην τα ενοντα δοτε ελεημοσυνην και ιδου παντα καθαρα υμιν εστιν
42 αλλα ουαι υμιν τοις φαρισαιοις οτι αποδεκατουτε το ηδυοσμον και το πηγανον και παν λαχανον και παρερχεσθε την κρισιν και την αγαπην του θεου ταυτα δε εδει ποιησαι κακεινα μη παρειναι
43 ουαι υμιν τοις φαρισαιοις οτι αγαπατε την πρωτοκαθεδριαν εν ταις συναγωγαις και τους ασπασμους εν ταις αγοραις
44 ουαι υμιν οτι εστε ως τα μνημεια τα αδηλα και οι ανθρωποι οι περιπατουντες επανω ουκ οιδασιν
45 αποκριθεις δε τις των νομικων λεγει αυτω διδασκαλε ταυτα λεγων και ημας υβριζεις
46 ο δε ειπεν και υμιν τοις νομικοις ουαι οτι φορτιζετε τους ανθρωπους φορτια δυσβαστακτα και αυτοι ενι των δακτυλων υμων ου προσψαυετε τοις φορτιοις
47 ουαι υμιν οτι οικοδομειτε τα μνημεια των προφητων οι δε πατερες υμων απεκτειναν αυτους
48 αρα μαρτυρες εστε και συνευδοκειτε τοις εργοις των πατερων υμων οτι αυτοι μεν απεκτειναν αυτους υμεις δε οικοδομειτε
49 δια τουτο και η σοφια του θεου ειπεν αποστελω εις αυτους προφητας και αποστολους και εξ αυτων αποκτενουσιν και διωξουσιν
50 ινα εκζητηθη το αιμα παντων των προφητων το εκκεχυμενον απο καταβολης κοσμου απο της γενεας ταυτης
51 απο αιματος αβελ εως αιματος ζαχαριου του απολομενου μεταξυ του θυσιαστηριου και του οικου ναι λεγω υμιν εκζητηθησεται απο της γενεας ταυτης
52 ουαι υμιν τοις νομικοις οτι ηρατε την κλειδα της γνωσεως αυτοι ουκ εισηλθατε και τους εισερχομενους εκωλυσατε

– Господи, научи нас молиться, как и Иоанн научил своих учеников.
2 Он сказал им:
– Когда вы молитесь, говорите так:
Отец, пусть прославится Твое имя!
Пусть придет Твое Царство!
3 Давай нам каждый день наш насущный хлеб
4 и прости нам наши грехи,
ведь и мы прощаем каждому, кто нам должен.
Не дай нам поддаться искушению.
5 Потом Иисус сказал им:
– Вряд ли у кого-либо из вас есть друг, который поступает следующим образом: например, приходит к нему в полночь товарищ и просит: «Друг, одолжи мне три лепешки[a]. 6 Ко мне с дороги заехал гость, и мне нечего ему предложить». 7 А тот, находясь в доме, отвечает: «Не беспокой меня. Дверь уже заперта, дети мои со мною в постели, не могу я сейчас встать и дать тебе хлеба». 8 Говорю вам, что даже если он не встанет и не даст ему по дружбе, ему все-таки придется сделать то, о чем его попросили, только чтобы не осрамиться[b].
9 Поэтому Я говорю вам: просите – и вам дадут, ищите – и найдете, стучите – и вам откроют. 10 Потому что каждый, кто просит, получает, и кто ищет, находит, и тому, кто стучит, откроют. 11 Есть ли среди вас такой отец, который даст своему сыну змею, когда тот попросит рыбы? 12 Или, если тот попросит яйцо, даст ему скорпиона? 13 Если вы, будучи злы, умеете давать своим детям благие дары, то тем более Небесный Отец даст Святого Духа тем, кто просит у Него!

14 Однажды Иисус изгнал демона немоты. И когда демон вышел, человек, который был нем, заговорил. Люди удивлялись. 15 Но некоторые говорили:

24 Когда нечистый дух выходит из человека, то он скитается по безводным местам, ища место для отдыха, но не находит его. Тогда он говорит: «Возвращусь-ка я в дом, из которого вышел». 25 Когда он возвращается, то находит дом чисто выметенным и убранным. 26 Тогда он идет и берет семь других духов, еще более злых, чем он сам, и они приходят и поселяются там. И это для человека еще хуже того, что было вначале.
Истинное счастье
27 Иисус еще говорил, когда одна женщина из толпы крикнула:
– Блаженна та мать, что родила Тебя и выкормила![d]
28 Иисус ответил:
– Блаженнее те[e], кто слышит слово Божье и исполняет его.
Иисус осуждает неверие(D)
29 Когда людей собралось еще больше, Иисус начал говорить:
– Это поколение – злое. Оно ищет знамения, но ему не будет дано никакого знамения, кроме знамения пророка Ионы. 30 И как Иона стал знамением для жителей Ниневии, так и Сын Человеческий станет знамением для этого поколения[f]. 31 Царица Юга[g] встанет в День Суда с людьми этого поколения и осудит их, потому что она пришла с другого конца света послушать мудрость Соломона. Сейчас же с вами Тот, Кто больше Соломона. 32 Жители Ниневии встанут в День Суда с людьми этого поколения и обвинят их, потому что они покаялись от проповеди Ионы[h]. 33 Никто, зажегши светильник, не ставит его в погреб или под горшок. Наоборот, его ставят на подставку, чтобы входящие видели свет. 34 Твой глаз – светильник твоего тела. Когда твой глаз ясен, тогда и все твое тело полно света. Если же у тебя дурной глаз, то и все твое тело темно. 35 Так что смотри, не тьма ли тот свет, который внутри тебя. 36 Итак, если все твое тело полно света и в нем нет ни одной темной части, то оно все будет светло, как бывает, когда светильник освещает тебя сиянием.
Иисус обличает религиозных вождей(F)
37 Когда Иисус так говорил, один фарисей пригласил Его к себе на обед. Иисус пришел и возлег у стола. 38 Фарисея удивило, что Он не совершил перед едой ритуального омовения. 39 Но Господь сказал ему:
– Вот вы, фарисеи, очищаете чаши и тарелки снаружи, но внутри вы полны жадности и злобы. 40 Глупцы! Разве Тот, Кто сотворил внешнее, не сотворил и внутреннее? 41 Что же касается внутреннего, то давайте милостыню, и тогда все у вас будет чисто.
42 Но горе вам, фарисеи, потому что вы даете десятину с мяты, руты и с других трав, а справедливостью и любовью Божьей вы пренебрегаете. И то нужно делать, и другого не оставлять.
43 Горе вам, фарисеи, потому что вы любите занимать почетные места в синагогах и любите, когда вас приветствуют на площадях.
44 Горе вам, вы подобны никак не обозначенным могилам, по которым люди ходят, даже не подозревая об их существовании.
45 Один из учителей Закона сказал Ему:
– Учитель, говоря это, Ты и нас обижаешь.
46 Иисус ответил:
– Горе и вам, учители Закона, потому что вы взваливаете на людей ноши, которые невозможно нести, а сами и пальцем не шевельнете, чтобы помочь им[i].
47 Горе вам, потому что вы строите надгробные памятники пророкам, которых убили ваши предки. 48 Вы сами свидетельствуете о том, что одобряете действия ваших предков: те убивали пророков, а вы строите им надгробные памятники. 49 Поэтому и Божья мудрость сказала: «Я пошлю к ним пророков и апостолов, но они одних убьют, а других будут преследовать». 50 Поэтому нынешнее поколение понесет ответственность за кровь всех пророков, пролитую от создания мира, 51 от крови Авеля и до крови Захарии, убитого между жертвенником и храмом[j]. Да, говорю вам, нынешнее поколение ответит за все.
52 Горе вам, учители Закона, потому что вы присвоили ключ знания. Но и сами не вошли, и тем, кто хотел войти, воспрепятствовали.

Jesus’ Teaching on Prayer(A)(B)
11 One day Jesus was praying(C) in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord,(D) teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”
2 He said to them, “When you pray, say:
“‘Father,[a]
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom(E) come.[b]
3 Give us each day our daily bread.
4 Forgive us our sins,
for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.[c](F)
And lead us not into temptation.[d]’”(G)
5 Then Jesus said to them, “Suppose you have a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread; 6 a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have no food to offer him.’ 7 And suppose the one inside answers, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children and I are in bed. I can’t get up and give you anything.’ 8 I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity[e] he will surely get up and give you as much as you need.(H)
9 “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you;(I) seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
11 “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for[f] a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
Jesus and Beelzebul(J)(K)
14 Jesus was driving out a demon that was mute. When the demon left, the man who had been mute spoke, and the crowd was amazed.(L) 15 But some of them said, “By Beelzebul,(M) the prince of demons, he is driving out demons.”(N) 16 Others tested him by asking for a sign from heaven.(O)
17 Jesus knew their thoughts(P) and said to them: “Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall. 18 If Satan(Q) is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand? I say this because you claim that I drive out demons by Beelzebul. 19 Now if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your followers drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. 20 But if I drive out demons by the finger of God,(R) then the kingdom of God(S) has come upon you.
21 “When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are safe. 22 But when someone stronger attacks and overpowers him, he takes away the armor in which the man trusted and divides up his plunder.
23 “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.(T)
24 “When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ 25 When it arrives, it finds the house swept clean and put in order. 26 Then it goes and takes seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first.”(U)
27 As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out, “Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you.”(V)
28 He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God(W) and obey it.”(X)
The Sign of Jonah(Y)
29 As the crowds increased, Jesus said, “This is a wicked generation. It asks for a sign,(Z) but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.(AA) 30 For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of Man be to this generation. 31 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the people of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom;(AB) and now something greater than Solomon is here. 32 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah;(AC) and now something greater than Jonah is here.
The Lamp of the Body(AD)
33 “No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light.(AE) 34 Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy,[g] your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy,[h] your body also is full of darkness. 35 See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness. 36 Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be just as full of light as when a lamp shines its light on you.”
Woes on the Pharisees and the Experts in the Law
37 When Jesus had finished speaking, a Pharisee invited him to eat with him; so he went in and reclined at the table.(AF) 38 But the Pharisee was surprised when he noticed that Jesus did not first wash before the meal.(AG)
39 Then the Lord(AH) said to him, “Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness.(AI) 40 You foolish people!(AJ) Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also? 41 But now as for what is inside you—be generous to the poor,(AK) and everything will be clean for you.(AL)
42 “Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth(AM) of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God.(AN) You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone.(AO)
43 “Woe to you Pharisees, because you love the most important seats in the synagogues and respectful greetings in the marketplaces.(AP)
44 “Woe to you, because you are like unmarked graves,(AQ) which people walk over without knowing it.”
45 One of the experts in the law(AR) answered him, “Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us also.”
46 Jesus replied, “And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them.(AS)
47 “Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your ancestors who killed them. 48 So you testify that you approve of what your ancestors did; they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs.(AT) 49 Because of this, God in his wisdom(AU) said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.’(AV) 50 Therefore this generation will be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the beginning of the world, 51 from the blood of Abel(AW) to the blood of Zechariah,(AX) who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible for it all.(AY)
52 “Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering.”(AZ)
53 When Jesus went outside, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to oppose him fiercely and to besiege him with questions, 54 waiting to catch him in something he might say.(BA)

11 Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.”
2 So He said to them, “When you pray, say:
(B)Our[a] Father [b]in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come.
[c]Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
3 Give us day by day our daily bread.
4 And (C)forgive us our sins,
For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
And do not lead us into temptation,
[d]But deliver us from the evil one.”
A Friend Comes at Midnight
5 And He said to them, “Which of you shall have a friend, and go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves; 6 for a friend of mine has come to me on his journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; 7 and he will answer from within and say, ‘Do not trouble me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give to you’? 8 I say to you, (D)though he will not rise and give to him because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will rise and give him as many as he needs.
Keep Asking, Seeking, Knocking(E)
9 (F)“So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; (G)seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 11 (H)If a son asks for [e]bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13 If you then, being evil, know how to give (I)good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”
A House Divided Cannot Stand(J)
14 (K)And He was casting out a demon, and it was mute. So it was, when the demon had gone out, that the mute spoke; and the multitudes marveled. 15 But some of them said, (L)“He casts out demons by [f]Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons.”
16 Others, testing Him, (M)sought from Him a sign from heaven. 17 (N)But (O)He, knowing their thoughts, said to them: “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and a house divided against a house falls. 18 If Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? Because you say I cast out demons by Beelzebub. 19 And if I cast out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your sons cast them out? An Unclean Spirit Returns(T)
24 (U)“When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ 25 And when he comes, he finds it swept and put in order. 26 Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and (V)the last state of that man is worse than the first.”
Keeping the Word
27 And it happened, as He spoke these things, that a certain woman from the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, (W)“Blessed is the womb that bore You, and the breasts which nursed You!”
28 But He said, (X)“More than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”
Seeking a Sign(Y)
29 (Z)And while the crowds were thickly gathered together, He began to say, “This is an evil generation. It seeks a (AA)sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah [h]the prophet. 30 For as (AB)Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so also the Son of Man will be to this generation. 31 (AC)The queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and indeed a (AD)greater than Solomon is here. 32 The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for (AE)they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is here.
The Lamp of the Body(AF)
33 (AG)“No one, when he has lit a lamp, puts it in a secret place or under a (AH)basket, but on a lampstand, that those who come in may see the light. 34 (AI)The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore, when your eye is [i]good, your whole body also is full of light. But when your eye is [j]bad, your body also is full of darkness. 35 Therefore take heed that the light which is in you is not darkness. 36 If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, the whole body will be full of light, as when the bright shining of a lamp gives you light.”
Woe to the Pharisees and Lawyers
37 And as He spoke, a certain Pharisee asked Him to dine with him. So He went in and sat down to eat. 38 (AJ)When the Pharisee saw it, he marveled that He had not first washed before dinner.
39 (AK)Then the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees make the outside of the cup and dish clean, but (AL)your inward part is full of [k]greed and wickedness. 40 Foolish ones! Did not (AM)He who made the outside make the inside also? 41 (AN)But rather give alms of [l]such things as you have; then indeed all things are clean to you.
42 (AO)“But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and (AP)pass by justice and the (AQ)love of God. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. 43 (AR)Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the [m]best seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. 44 (AS)Woe to you, [n]scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! (AT)For you are like graves which are not seen, and the men who walk over them are not aware of them.”
45 Then one of the lawyers answered and said to Him, “Teacher, by saying these things You reproach us also.”
46 And He said, “Woe to you also, lawyers! (AU)For you load men with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers. 47 (AV)Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. 48 In fact, you bear witness that you approve the deeds of your fathers; for they indeed killed them, and you build their tombs. 49 Therefore the wisdom of God also said, (AW)‘I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and persecute,’ 50 that the blood of all the prophets which was shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation, 51 (AX)from the blood of Abel to (AY)the blood of Zechariah who perished between the altar and the temple. Yes, I say to you, it shall be required of this generation.
52 (AZ)“Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge. You did not enter in yourselves, and those who were entering in you hindered.”
53 [o]And as He said these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to assail Him vehemently, and to cross-examine Him about many things, 54 lying in wait for Him, [p]and (BA)seeking to catch Him in something He might say, [q]that they might accuse Him.
