God is our refuge(F) and strength,(G)
    an ever-present(H) help(I) in trouble.(J)
Therefore we will not fear,(K) though the earth give way(L)
    and the mountains fall(M) into the heart of the sea,(N)
though its waters roar(O) and foam(P)
    and the mountains quake(Q) with their surging.[c]

There is a river(R) whose streams(S) make glad the city of God,(T)

The Lord Almighty(AE) is with us;(AF)
    the God of Jacob(AG) is our fortress.(AH)

Come and see what the Lord has done,(AI)
    the desolations(AJ) he has brought on the earth.
He makes wars(AK) cease
    to the ends of the earth.
He breaks the bow(AL) and shatters the spear;
    he burns the shields[d] with fire.(AM)
10 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;(AN)
    I will be exalted(AO) among the nations,
    I will be exalted in the earth.”

11 The Lord Almighty is with us;
    the God of Jacob(AP) is our fortress.(AQ)

God has ascended(AZ) amid shouts of joy,(BA)
    the Lord amid the sounding of trumpets.(BB)
Sing praises(BC) to God, sing praises;

    sing to him a psalm(BE) of praise.

God reigns(BF) over the nations;
    God is seated on his holy throne.(BG)
The nobles of the nations assemble
    as the people of the God of Abraham,
for the kings[g] of the earth belong to God;(BH)
    he is greatly exalted.(BI)

Psalm 48[h]

A song. A psalm of the Sons of Korah.

Great is the Lord,(BJ) and most worthy of praise,(BK)
    in the city of our God,(BL) his holy mountain.(BM)

Beautiful(BN) in its loftiness,
    the joy of the whole earth,
like the heights of Zaphon[i](BO) is Mount Zion,(BP)
    the city of the Great King.(BQ)
God is in her citadels;(BR)
    he has shown himself to be her fortress.(BS)

When the kings joined forces,
    when they advanced together,(BT)
they saw her and were astounded;
    they fled in terror.(BU)
Trembling seized(BV) them there,
    pain like that of a woman in labor.(BW)
You destroyed them like ships of Tarshish(BX)
    shattered by an east wind.(BY)

As we have heard,
    so we have seen
in the city of the Lord Almighty,
    in the city of our God:
God makes her secure
    forever.[j](BZ)

Within your temple, O God,
    we meditate(CA) on your unfailing love.(CB)

    because of your judgments.(CE)

12 Walk about Zion, go around her,
    count her towers,(CF)
13 consider well her ramparts,(CG)
    view her citadels,(CH)
that you may tell of them
    to the next generation.(CI)

14 For this God is our God for ever and ever;
    he will be our guide(CJ) even to the end.

Psalm 49[k]

For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A psalm.

Hear(CK) this, all you peoples;(CL)
    listen, all who live in this world,(CM)
both low and high,(CN)
    rich and poor alike:
My mouth will speak words of wisdom;(CO)
    the meditation of my heart will give you understanding.(CP)
I will turn my ear to a proverb;(CQ)
    with the harp(CR) I will expound my riddle:(CS)

Why should I fear(CT) when evil days come,
    when wicked deceivers surround me—
those who trust in their wealth(CU)
    and boast(CV) of their great riches?(CW)
No one can redeem the life of another
    or give to God a ransom for them—
the ransom(CX) for a life is costly,
    no payment is ever enough—(CY)
so that they should live on(CZ) forever
    and not see decay.(DA)
10 For all can see that the wise die,(DB)
    that the foolish and the senseless(DC) also perish,
    leaving their wealth(DD) to others.(DE)
11 Their tombs(DF) will remain their houses[l] forever,
    their dwellings for endless generations,(DG)
    though they had[m] named(DH) lands after themselves.

12 People, despite their wealth, do not endure;(DI)
    they are like the beasts that perish.(DJ)

13 This is the fate of those who trust in themselves,(DK)
    and of their followers, who approve their sayings.[n]
14 They are like sheep and are destined(DL) to die;(DM)
    death will be their shepherd
    (but the upright will prevail(DN) over them in the morning).
Their forms will decay in the grave,
    far from their princely mansions.
15 But God will redeem me from the realm of the dead;(DO)
    he will surely take me to himself.(DP)
16 Do not be overawed when others grow rich,
    when the splendor of their houses increases;
17 for they will take nothing(DQ) with them when they die,
    their splendor will not descend with them.(DR)
18 Though while they live they count themselves blessed—(DS)
    and people praise you when you prosper—
19 they will join those who have gone before them,(DT)
    who will never again see the light(DU) of life.

20 People who have wealth but lack understanding(DV)
    are like the beasts that perish.(DW)

Psalm 50

A psalm of Asaph.

The Mighty One, God, the Lord,(DX)
    speaks and summons the earth
    from the rising of the sun to where it sets.(DY)
From Zion,(DZ) perfect in beauty,(EA)
    God shines forth.(EB)
Our God comes(EC)
    and will not be silent;(ED)
a fire devours(EE) before him,(EF)
    and around him a tempest(EG) rages.
He summons the heavens above,
    and the earth,(EH) that he may judge his people:(EI)
“Gather to me this consecrated people,(EJ)
    who made a covenant(EK) with me by sacrifice.”
And the heavens proclaim(EL) his righteousness,
    for he is a God of justice.[o][p](EM)

“Listen, my people, and I will speak;
    I will testify(EN) against you, Israel:
    I am God, your God.(EO)
I bring no charges(EP) against you concerning your sacrifices
    or concerning your burnt offerings,(EQ) which are ever before me.
I have no need of a bull(ER) from your stall
    or of goats(ES) from your pens,(ET)
10 for every animal of the forest(EU) is mine,
    and the cattle on a thousand hills.(EV)
11 I know every bird(EW) in the mountains,
    and the insects in the fields(EX) are mine.
12 If I were hungry I would not tell you,
    for the world(EY) is mine, and all that is in it.(EZ)
13 Do I eat the flesh of bulls
    or drink the blood of goats?

14 “Sacrifice thank offerings(FA) to God,
    fulfill your vows(FB) to the Most High,(FC)
15 and call(FD) on me in the day of trouble;(FE)
    I will deliver(FF) you, and you will honor(FG) me.”

16 But to the wicked person, God says:

“What right have you to recite my laws
    or take my covenant(FH) on your lips?(FI)
17 You hate(FJ) my instruction
    and cast my words behind(FK) you.
18 When you see a thief, you join(FL) with him;
    you throw in your lot with adulterers.(FM)
19 You use your mouth for evil
    and harness your tongue to deceit.(FN)
20 You sit and testify against your brother(FO)
    and slander your own mother’s son.
21 When you did these things and I kept silent,(FP)
    you thought I was exactly[q] like you.
But I now arraign(FQ) you
    and set my accusations(FR) before you.

22 “Consider this, you who forget God,(FS)
    or I will tear you to pieces, with no one to rescue you:(FT)
23 Those who sacrifice thank offerings honor me,
    and to the blameless[r] I will show my salvation.(FU)

Psalm 51[s]

For the director of music. A psalm of David. When the prophet Nathan came to him after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba.(FV)

Have mercy(FW) on me, O God,
    according to your unfailing love;(FX)
according to your great compassion(FY)
    blot out(FZ) my transgressions.(GA)
Wash away(GB) all my iniquity
    and cleanse(GC) me from my sin.

For I know my transgressions,
    and my sin is always before me.(GD)
Against you, you only, have I sinned(GE)
    and done what is evil in your sight;(GF)
so you are right in your verdict
    and justified when you judge.(GG)
Surely I was sinful(GH) at birth,(GI)
    sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb;
    you taught me wisdom(GJ) in that secret place.(GK)

Cleanse(GL) me with hyssop,(GM) and I will be clean;
    wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.(GN)
Let me hear joy and gladness;(GO)
    let the bones(GP) you have crushed rejoice.
Hide your face from my sins(GQ)
    and blot out(GR) all my iniquity.

10 Create in me a pure heart,(GS) O God,
    and renew a steadfast spirit within me.(GT)
11 Do not cast me(GU) from your presence(GV)
    or take your Holy Spirit(GW) from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation(GX)
    and grant me a willing spirit,(GY) to sustain me.(GZ)

13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways,(HA)
    so that sinners(HB) will turn back to you.(HC)
14 Deliver me(HD) from the guilt of bloodshed,(HE) O God,
    you who are God my Savior,(HF)
    and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.(HG)
15 Open my lips, Lord,(HH)
    and my mouth will declare your praise.
16 You do not delight in sacrifice,(HI) or I would bring it;
    you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.
17 My sacrifice,(HJ) O God, is[t] a broken spirit;
    a broken and contrite heart(HK)
    you, God, will not despise.

18 May it please you to prosper Zion,(HL)
    to build up the walls of Jerusalem.(HM)
19 Then you will delight in the sacrifices of the righteous,(HN)
    in burnt offerings(HO) offered whole;
    then bulls(HP) will be offered on your altar.

Psalm 52[u]

For the director of music. A maskil[v] of David. When Doeg the Edomite(HQ) had gone to Saul and told him: “David has gone to the house of Ahimelek.”

Why do you boast of evil, you mighty hero?
    Why do you boast(HR) all day long,(HS)
    you who are a disgrace in the eyes of God?
You who practice deceit,(HT)
    your tongue plots destruction;(HU)
    it is like a sharpened razor.(HV)
You love evil(HW) rather than good,
    falsehood(HX) rather than speaking the truth.[w]
You love every harmful word,
    you deceitful tongue!(HY)

    they will laugh(IC) at you, saying,
“Here now is the man
    who did not make God his stronghold(ID)
but trusted in his great wealth(IE)
    and grew strong by destroying others!”

But I am like an olive tree(IF)
    flourishing in the house of God;
I trust(IG) in God’s unfailing love
    for ever and ever.
For what you have done I will always praise you(IH)
    in the presence of your faithful people.(II)
And I will hope in your name,(IJ)
    for your name is good.(IK)

Psalm 53[x](IL)

God looks down from heaven(IO)
    on all mankind
to see if there are any who understand,(IP)
    any who seek God.(IQ)
Everyone has turned away, all have become corrupt;
    there is no one who does good,
    not even one.(IR)

Do all these evildoers know nothing?

They devour my people as though eating bread;
    they never call on God.
But there they are, overwhelmed with dread,
    where there was nothing to dread.(IS)
God scattered the bones(IT) of those who attacked you;(IU)
    you put them to shame,(IV) for God despised them.(IW)

    the Lord is the one who sustains me.(JH)

    and stay in the desert;[af](JZ)
I would hurry to my place of shelter,(KA)
    far from the tempest and storm.(KB)

Lord, confuse the wicked, confound their words,(KC)
    for I see violence and strife(KD) in the city.(KE)
10 Day and night they prowl(KF) about on its walls;
    malice and abuse are within it.
11 Destructive forces(KG) are at work in the city;
    threats and lies(KH) never leave its streets.

12 If an enemy were insulting me,
    I could endure it;
if a foe were rising against me,
    I could hide.
13 But it is you, a man like myself,
    my companion, my close friend,(KI)
14 with whom I once enjoyed sweet fellowship(KJ)
    at the house of God,(KK)
as we walked about
    among the worshipers.

17 Evening,(KN) morning(KO) and noon(KP)
    I cry out in distress,
    and he hears my voice.
18 He rescues me unharmed
    from the battle waged against me,

    on Edom I toss my sandal;
    over Philistia I shout in triumph.(PT)

For the director of music. For Jeduthun. A psalm of David.

Truly my soul finds rest(QN) in God;(QO)
    my salvation comes from him.
Truly he is my rock(QP) and my salvation;(QQ)
    he is my fortress,(QR) I will never be shaken.(QS)

How long will you assault me?
    Would all of you throw me down—
    this leaning wall,(QT) this tottering fence?
Surely they intend to topple me
    from my lofty place;
    they take delight in lies.
With their mouths they bless,
    but in their hearts they curse.[bc](QU)

Yes, my soul, find rest in God;(QV)
    my hope comes from him.
Truly he is my rock and my salvation;
    he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.
My salvation and my honor depend on God[bd];
    he is my mighty rock, my refuge.(QW)
Trust in him at all times, you people;(QX)
    pour out your hearts to him,(QY)
    for God is our refuge.

Surely the lowborn(QZ) are but a breath,(RA)
    the highborn are but a lie.
If weighed on a balance,(RB) they are nothing;
    together they are only a breath.
10 Do not trust in extortion(RC)
    or put vain hope in stolen goods;(RD)
though your riches increase,
    do not set your heart on them.(RE)

11 One thing God has spoken,
    two things I have heard:
“Power belongs to you, God,(RF)
12     and with you, Lord, is unfailing love”;(RG)
and, “You reward everyone
    according to what they have done.”(RH)

Psalm 63[be]

A psalm of David. When he was in the Desert of Judah.

You, God, are my God,
    earnestly I seek you;
I thirst for you,(RI)
    my whole being longs for you,
in a dry and parched land
    where there is no water.(RJ)

I have seen you in the sanctuary(RK)
    and beheld your power and your glory.(RL)
Because your love is better than life,(RM)
    my lips will glorify you.
I will praise you as long as I live,(RN)
    and in your name I will lift up my hands.(RO)
I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods;(RP)
    with singing lips my mouth will praise you.

Because you are my help,(RR)
    I sing in the shadow of your wings.(RS)
I cling to you;(RT)
    your right hand upholds me.(RU)

Those who want to kill me will be destroyed;(RV)
    they will go down to the depths of the earth.(RW)
10 They will be given over to the sword(RX)
    and become food for jackals.(RY)

11 But the king will rejoice in God;
    all who swear by God will glory in him,(RZ)
    while the mouths of liars will be silenced.(SA)

Psalm 64[bf]

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

Hear me, my God, as I voice my complaint;(SB)
    protect my life from the threat of the enemy.(SC)

Hide me from the conspiracy(SD) of the wicked,(SE)
    from the plots of evildoers.
They sharpen their tongues like swords(SF)
    and aim cruel words like deadly arrows.(SG)
They shoot from ambush at the innocent;(SH)
    they shoot suddenly, without fear.(SI)

They encourage each other in evil plans,
    they talk about hiding their snares;(SJ)
    they say, “Who will see it[bg]?”(SK)
They plot injustice and say,
    “We have devised a perfect plan!”
    Surely the human mind and heart are cunning.

But God will shoot them with his arrows;
    they will suddenly be struck down.
He will turn their own tongues against them(SL)
    and bring them to ruin;
    all who see them will shake their heads(SM) in scorn.(SN)
All people will fear;(SO)
    they will proclaim the works of God
    and ponder what he has done.(SP)

10 The righteous will rejoice in the Lord(SQ)
    and take refuge in him;(SR)
    all the upright in heart will glory in him!(SS)

11 You crown the year with your bounty,(TO)
    and your carts overflow with abundance.(TP)
12 The grasslands of the wilderness overflow;(TQ)
    the hills are clothed with gladness.(TR)

He rules forever(UG) by his power,
    his eyes watch(UH) the nations—
    let not the rebellious(UI) rise up against him.

Praise(UJ) our God, all peoples,
    let the sound of his praise be heard;
he has preserved our lives(UK)
    and kept our feet from slipping.(UL)
10 For you, God, tested(UM) us;
    you refined us like silver.(UN)
11 You brought us into prison(UO)
    and laid burdens(UP) on our backs.
12 You let people ride over our heads;(UQ)
    we went through fire and water,
    but you brought us to a place of abundance.(UR)

13 I will come to your temple with burnt offerings(US)
    and fulfill my vows(UT) to you—
14 vows my lips promised and my mouth spoke
    when I was in trouble.
15 I will sacrifice fat animals to you
    and an offering of rams;
    I will offer bulls and goats.(UU)

16 Come and hear,(UV) all you who fear God;
    let me tell(UW) you what he has done for me.
17 I cried out to him with my mouth;
    his praise was on my tongue.
18 If I had cherished sin in my heart,
    the Lord would not have listened;(UX)
19 but God has surely listened
    and has heard(UY) my prayer.
20 Praise be to God,
    who has not rejected(UZ) my prayer
    or withheld his love from me!

13 Even while you sleep among the sheep pens,[bs](WO)
    the wings of my dove are sheathed with silver,

Psalm 69[bz]

For the director of music. To the tune of “Lilies.” Of David.

Save me, O God,
    for the waters(YQ) have come up to my neck.(YR)
I sink in the miry depths,(YS)
    where there is no foothold.
I have come into the deep waters;
    the floods engulf me.
I am worn out calling for help;(YT)
    my throat is parched.
My eyes fail,(YU)
    looking for my God.
Those who hate me(YV) without reason(YW)
    outnumber the hairs of my head;
many are my enemies without cause,(YX)
    those who seek to destroy me.(YY)
I am forced to restore
    what I did not steal.

You, God, know my folly;(YZ)
    my guilt is not hidden from you.(ZA)

Lord, the Lord Almighty,
    may those who hope in you
    not be disgraced because of me;
God of Israel,
    may those who seek you
    not be put to shame because of me.
For I endure scorn(ZB) for your sake,(ZC)
    and shame covers my face.(ZD)
I am a foreigner to my own family,
    a stranger to my own mother’s children;(ZE)
for zeal for your house consumes me,(ZF)
    and the insults of those who insult you fall on me.(ZG)
10 When I weep and fast,(ZH)
    I must endure scorn;
11 when I put on sackcloth,(ZI)
    people make sport of me.
12 Those who sit at the gate(ZJ) mock me,
    and I am the song of the drunkards.(ZK)

13 But I pray to you, Lord,
    in the time of your favor;(ZL)
in your great love,(ZM) O God,
    answer me with your sure salvation.
14 Rescue me from the mire,
    do not let me sink;
deliver me from those who hate me,
    from the deep waters.(ZN)
15 Do not let the floodwaters(ZO) engulf me
    or the depths swallow me up(ZP)
    or the pit close its mouth over me.(ZQ)

16 Answer me, Lord, out of the goodness of your love;(ZR)
    in your great mercy turn to me.
17 Do not hide your face(ZS) from your servant;
    answer me quickly,(ZT) for I am in trouble.(ZU)
18 Come near and rescue me;
    deliver(ZV) me because of my foes.

19 You know how I am scorned,(ZW) disgraced and shamed;
    all my enemies are before you.
20 Scorn has broken my heart
    and has left me helpless;
I looked for sympathy, but there was none,
    for comforters,(ZX) but I found none.(ZY)
21 They put gall in my food
    and gave me vinegar(ZZ) for my thirst.(AAA)
