And bring ye in all busyness, and minister in your faith virtue, and in virtue knowing [soothly in virtue science, or knowing];

in knowing abstinence [in science soothly abstinence], in abstinence patience, in patience piety;

in piety, love of brotherhood, and in love of brotherhood charity.

For if these be with you, and overcome [and overcome, or be plenteous], they shall not make you void, neither without fruit [nor without fruit], in the knowing of our Lord Jesus Christ.

But to whom these be not ready, he is blind, and gropeth with his hand, and forgetteth the purging of his old trespasses.

And give all diligence to this. To your faith add virtue, and to virtue knowledge, and to knowledge temperance, and to temperance patience, to patience godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, to brotherly kindness love. For if these things be among you and abound, they will make you so that you will neither be idle nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But he who lacks these things is blind, and gropes for the way with his hands, and has forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.

[a]Therefore give even all diligence thereunto: [b]join moreover virtue with your faith: and with virtue, knowledge:

[c]And with knowledge, temperance: and with temperance, patience: and with patience, godliness:

And with godliness, brotherly kindness: and with brotherly kindness, love.

[d]For if these things be among you, and abound, they will make you that ye neither shall be idle, nor unfruitful in the acknowledging of our Lord Jesus Christ:

Footnotes

  1. 2 Peter 1:5 Having laid the foundation (that is, having declared the causes of our salvation and especially of our sanctification) now he beginneth to exhort us to give our minds wholly to the true use of this grace. And he beginneth with faith without which nothing can please God, and he warneth us to have it full fraught with virtue (that is to say) with good and godly manners, being joined with the knowledge of God’s will, without which there is neither faith neither any true virtue.
  2. 2 Peter 1:5 Supply also, and support or aid.
  3. 2 Peter 1:6 He reckoneth up certain and other principal virtues, whereof some pertain to the first Table of the Law, others to the last.
  4. 2 Peter 1:8 As those fruits do spring from the true knowledge of Christ, so in like sort the knowledge itself is fostered, and groweth by bringing forth such fruits, insomuch that he that is unfruitful did either never know the true light, or hath forgotten the gift of sanctification which he hath received.
  5. 2 Peter 1:9 He that hath not an effectual knowledge of God in him, is blind as touching the kingdom of God, for he cannot see things that are afar off, that is to say, heavenly things.

And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; and to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.
