Stages in Israel’s Journey

33 Here are the stages in the journey^(A) of the Israelites when they came out of Egypt^(B) by divisions under the leadership of Moses and Aaron.^(C) ²At the Lord’s command Moses recorded^(D) the stages in their journey^(E). This is their journey by stages:

³The Israelites set out^(F) from Rameses^(G) on the fifteenth day of the first month, the day after the Passover.^(H) They marched out defiantly^(I) in full view of all the Egyptians, ⁴who were burying all their firstborn,^(J) whom the Lord had struck down among them; for the Lord had brought judgment^(K) on their gods.^(L)

⁵The Israelites left Rameses and camped at Sukkoth.^(M)

⁶They left Sukkoth and camped at Etham, on the edge of the desert.^(N)

⁷They left Etham, turned back to Pi Hahiroth, to the east of Baal Zephon,^(O) and camped near Migdol.^(P)

⁸They left Pi Hahiroth^[a]^(Q) and passed through the sea^(R) into the desert, and when they had traveled for three days in the Desert of Etham, they camped at Marah.^(S)

⁹They left Marah and went to Elim, where there were twelve springs and seventy palm trees, and they camped^(T) there.

¹⁰They left Elim^(U) and camped by the Red Sea.^[b]

¹¹They left the Red Sea and camped in the Desert of Sin.^(V)

¹²They left the Desert of Sin and camped at Dophkah.

¹³They left Dophkah and camped at Alush.

¹⁴They left Alush and camped at Rephidim, where there was no water for the people to drink.^(W)

¹⁶They left the Desert of Sinai and camped at Kibroth Hattaavah.^(Z)

¹⁷They left Kibroth Hattaavah and camped at Hazeroth.^(AA)

¹⁹They left Rithmah and camped at Rimmon Perez.

²⁰They left Rimmon Perez and camped at Libnah.^(AB)

³⁷They left Kadesh and camped at Mount Hor,^(AH) on the border of Edom.^(AI) ³⁸At the Lord’s command Aaron the priest went up Mount Hor, where he died^(AJ) on the first day of the fifth month of the fortieth year^(AK) after the Israelites came out of Egypt.^(AL) ³⁹Aaron was a hundred and twenty-three years old when he died on Mount Hor.

⁴⁰The Canaanite king^(AM) of Arad,^(AN) who lived in the Negev^(AO) of Canaan, heard that the Israelites were coming.

⁴¹They left Mount Hor and camped at Zalmonah.

⁴²They left Zalmonah and camped at Punon.

⁴³They left Punon and camped at Oboth.^(AP)

⁴⁴They left Oboth and camped at Iye Abarim, on the border of Moab.^(AQ)

⁴⁵They left Iye Abarim and camped at Dibon Gad.

⁴⁶They left Dibon Gad and camped at Almon Diblathaim.

⁴⁷They left Almon Diblathaim and camped in the mountains of Abarim,^(AR) near Nebo.^(AS)

⁴⁸They left the mountains of Abarim^(AT) and camped on the plains of Moab^(AU) by the Jordan^(AV) across from Jericho.^(AW) ⁴⁹There on the plains of Moab they camped along the Jordan from Beth Jeshimoth^(AX) to Abel Shittim.^(AY)

⁵⁰On the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho^(AZ) the Lord said to Moses, ⁵¹“Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘When you cross the Jordan into Canaan,^(BA) ⁵²drive out all the inhabitants of the land before you. Destroy all their carved images and their cast idols, and demolish all their high places.^(BB) ⁵³Take possession of the land and settle in it, for I have given you the land to possess.^(BC) ⁵⁴Distribute the land by lot,^(BD) according to your clans.^(BE) To a larger group give a larger inheritance, and to a smaller group a smaller one.^(BF) Whatever falls to them by lot will be theirs. Distribute it according to your ancestral tribes.^(BG)

⁵⁵“‘But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land, those you allow to remain will become barbs in your eyes and thorns^(BH) in your sides. They will give you trouble in the land where you will live. ⁵⁶And then I will do to you what I plan to do to them.^(BI)’”

Salvation for Others

56 This is what the Lord says:

“Maintain justice^(A)
    and do what is right,^(B)
for my salvation^(C) is close at hand
    and my righteousness^(D) will soon be revealed.
²Blessed^(E) is the one who does this—
    the person who holds it fast,
who keeps the Sabbath^(F) without desecrating it,
    and keeps their hands from doing any evil.”

³Let no foreigner^(G) who is bound to the Lord say,
“The Lord will surely exclude me from his people.”^(H)
And let no eunuch^(I) complain,
“I am only a dry tree.”

⁴For this is what the Lord says:

“To the eunuchs^(J) who keep my Sabbaths,
    who choose what pleases me
    and hold fast to my covenant^(K)—
⁵to them I will give within my temple and its walls^(L)
    a memorial^(M) and a name
    better than sons and daughters;
I will give them an everlasting name^(N)
    that will endure forever.^(O)
⁶And foreigners^(P) who bind themselves to the Lord
    to minister^(Q) to him,
to love the name^(R) of the Lord,
    and to be his servants,
all who keep the Sabbath^(S) without desecrating it
    and who hold fast to my covenant—
⁷these I will bring to my holy mountain^(T)
    and give them joy in my house of prayer.
Their burnt offerings and sacrifices^(U)
    will be accepted on my altar;
for my house will be called
    a house of prayer for all nations.^(V)”^(W)
⁸The Sovereign Lord declares—
    he who gathers the exiles of Israel:
“I will gather^(X) still others to them
    besides those already gathered.”

God’s Accusation Against the Wicked

⁹Come, all you beasts of the field,^(Y)
    come and devour, all you beasts of the forest!
¹⁰Israel’s watchmen^(Z) are blind,
    they all lack knowledge;^(AA)
they are all mute dogs,
    they cannot bark;
they lie around and dream,
    they love to sleep.^(AB)
¹¹They are dogs with mighty appetites;
    they never have enough.
They are shepherds^(AC) who lack understanding;^(AD)
    they all turn to their own way,^(AE)
    they seek their own gain.^(AF)
¹²“Come,” each one cries, “let me get wine!^(AG)
    Let us drink our fill of beer!
And tomorrow will be like today,
    or even far better.”^(AH)

Acts 19

Paul in Ephesus

19 While Apollos^(A) was at Corinth,^(B) Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus.^(C) There he found some disciples ²and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit^(D) when^[a] you believed?”

They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”

³So Paul asked, “Then what baptism did you receive?”

“John’s baptism,” they replied.

⁴Paul said, “John’s baptism^(E) was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.”^(F) ⁵On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.^(G) ⁶When Paul placed his hands on them,^(H) the Holy Spirit came on them,^(I) and they spoke in tongues^[b]^(J) and prophesied. ⁷There were about twelve men in all.

⁸Paul entered the synagogue^(K) and spoke boldly there for three months, arguing persuasively about the kingdom of God.^(L) ⁹But some of them^(M) became obstinate; they refused to believe and publicly maligned the Way.^(N) So Paul left them. He took the disciples^(O) with him and had discussions daily in the lecture hall of Tyrannus. ¹⁰This went on for two years,^(P) so that all the Jews and Greeks who lived in the province of Asia^(Q) heard the word of the Lord.^(R)

¹¹God did extraordinary miracles^(S) through Paul, ¹²so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured^(T) and the evil spirits left them.

¹³Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits^(U) tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, “In the name of the Jesus^(V) whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.” ¹⁴Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. ¹⁵One day the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?” ¹⁶Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding.

¹⁷When this became known to the Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus,^(W) they were all seized with fear,^(X) and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in high honor. ¹⁸Many of those who believed now came and openly confessed what they had done. ¹⁹A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas.^[c] ²⁰In this way the word of the Lord^(Y) spread widely and grew in power.^(Z)

²¹After all this had happened, Paul decided^[d] to go to Jerusalem,^(AA) passing through Macedonia^(AB) and Achaia.^(AC) “After I have been there,” he said, “I must visit Rome also.”^(AD) ²²He sent two of his helpers,^(AE) Timothy^(AF) and Erastus,^(AG) to Macedonia, while he stayed in the province of Asia^(AH) a little longer.

The Riot in Ephesus

²³About that time there arose a great disturbance about the Way.^(AI) ²⁴A silversmith named Demetrius, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought in a lot of business for the craftsmen there. ²⁵He called them together, along with the workers in related trades, and said: “You know, my friends, that we receive a good income from this business.^(AJ) ²⁶And you see and hear how this fellow Paul has convinced and led astray large numbers of people here in Ephesus^(AK) and in practically the whole province of Asia.^(AL) He says that gods made by human hands are no gods at all.^(AM) ²⁷There is danger not only that our trade will lose its good name, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be discredited; and the goddess herself, who is worshiped throughout the province of Asia and the world, will be robbed of her divine majesty.”

²⁸When they heard this, they were furious and began shouting: “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”^(AN) ²⁹Soon the whole city was in an uproar. The people seized Gaius^(AO) and Aristarchus,^(AP) Paul’s traveling companions from Macedonia,^(AQ) and all of them rushed into the theater together. ³⁰Paul wanted to appear before the crowd, but the disciples^(AR) would not let him. ³¹Even some of the officials of the province, friends of Paul, sent him a message begging him not to venture into the theater.

³²The assembly was in confusion: Some were shouting one thing, some another.^(AS) Most of the people did not even know why they were there. ³³The Jews in the crowd pushed Alexander to the front, and they shouted instructions to him. He motioned^(AT) for silence in order to make a defense before the people. ³⁴But when they realized he was a Jew, they all shouted in unison for about two hours: “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”^(AU)

³⁵The city clerk quieted the crowd and said: “Fellow Ephesians,^(AV) doesn’t all the world know that the city of Ephesus is the guardian of the temple of the great Artemis and of her image, which fell from heaven? ³⁶Therefore, since these facts are undeniable, you ought to calm down and not do anything rash. ³⁷You have brought these men here, though they have neither robbed temples^(AW) nor blasphemed our goddess. ³⁸If, then, Demetrius and his fellow craftsmen^(AX) have a grievance against anybody, the courts are open and there are proconsuls.^(AY) They can press charges. ³⁹If there is anything further you want to bring up, it must be settled in a legal assembly. ⁴⁰As it is, we are in danger of being charged with rioting because of what happened today. In that case we would not be able to account for this commotion, since there is no reason for it.” ⁴¹After he had said this, he dismissed the assembly.
