Psalm 56

Psalm 56^[a]

For the director of music. To the tune of “A Dove on Distant Oaks.” Of David. A miktam.^[b] When the Philistines had seized him in Gath.

¹Be merciful to me,^(A) my God,
    for my enemies are in hot pursuit;^(B)
    all day long they press their attack.^(C)
²My adversaries pursue me all day long;^(D)
    in their pride many are attacking me.^(E)

³When I am afraid,^(F) I put my trust in you.^(G)
⁴ In God, whose word I praise—^(H)
in God I trust and am not afraid.^(I)
What can mere mortals do to me?^(J)

⁵All day long they twist my words;^(K)
    all their schemes are for my ruin.
⁶They conspire,^(L) they lurk,
    they watch my steps,^(M)
    hoping to take my life.^(N)
⁷Because of their wickedness do not^[c] let them escape;^(O)
    in your anger, God, bring the nations down.^(P)

⁸Record my misery;
    list my tears on your scroll^[d]^(Q)—
    are they not in your record?^(R)
⁹Then my enemies will turn back^(S)
    when I call for help.^(T)
    By this I will know that God is for me.^(U)

¹⁰In God, whose word I praise,
in the Lord, whose word I praise—
¹¹in God I trust and am not afraid.
What can man do to me?

¹²I am under vows^(V) to you, my God;
    I will present my thank offerings to you.
¹³For you have delivered me from death^(W)
    and my feet from stumbling,
that I may walk before God
    in the light of life.^(X)

The Ordination of Aaron and His Sons^(A)

8 The Lord said to Moses, ²“Bring Aaron and his sons,^(B) their garments,^(C) the anointing oil,^(D) the bull for the sin offering,^[a]^(E) the two rams^(F) and the basket containing bread made without yeast,^(G) ³and gather the entire assembly^(H) at the entrance to the tent of meeting.” ⁴Moses did as the Lord commanded him, and the assembly gathered at the entrance to the tent of meeting.

⁵Moses said to the assembly, “This is what the Lord has commanded to be done.^(I)” ⁶Then Moses brought Aaron and his sons forward and washed them with water.^(J) ⁷He put the tunic on Aaron, tied the sash around him, clothed him with the robe and put the ephod on him. He also fastened the ephod with a decorative waistband, which he tied around him.^(K) ⁸He placed the breastpiece^(L) on him and put the Urim and Thummim^(M) in the breastpiece. ⁹Then he placed the turban^(N) on Aaron’s head and set the gold plate, the sacred emblem,^(O) on the front of it, as the Lord commanded Moses.^(P)

¹⁰Then Moses took the anointing oil^(Q) and anointed^(R) the tabernacle^(S) and everything in it, and so consecrated them. ¹¹He sprinkled some of the oil on the altar seven times, anointing the altar and all its utensils and the basin with its stand, to consecrate them.^(T) ¹²He poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron’s head and anointed^(U) him to consecrate him.^(V) ¹³Then he brought Aaron’s sons^(W) forward, put tunics^(X) on them, tied sashes around them and fastened caps on them, as the Lord commanded Moses.^(Y)

³⁰Then Moses^(A) took some of the anointing oil and some of the blood from the altar and sprinkled them on Aaron and his garments^(B) and on his sons and their garments. So he consecrated^(C) Aaron and his garments and his sons and their garments.

³¹Moses then said to Aaron and his sons, “Cook the meat at the entrance to the tent of meeting^(D) and eat it there with the bread from the basket of ordination offerings, as I was commanded: ‘Aaron and his sons are to eat it.’ ³²Then burn up the rest of the meat and the bread. ³³Do not leave the entrance to the tent of meeting for seven days, until the days of your ordination are completed, for your ordination will last seven days.^(E) ³⁴What has been done today was commanded by the Lord^(F) to make atonement for you. ³⁵You must stay at the entrance to the tent of meeting day and night for seven days and do what the Lord requires,^(G) so you will not die; for that is what I have been commanded.”
